Remembering Michael Grant Cahill

Share your tributes and remembrances of Michael Grant Cahill here. The 62-year-old physician assistant suffered a heart attack two weeks ago and returned to work at the base as a civilian employee after taking just one week off for recovery, said his daughter Keely Vanacker. "He survived that. He was getting back on track, and he gets killed by a gunman," Vanacker said, her words bare with shock and disbelief.

Mr. Cahill helped train me when I came to Fort Hood. He made sure I knew how to find whatever I needed. I will never forget his kindness.

He was a wonderful, caring human being. And while people often say that about those who have passed away, in this case, it was completely true. I sadly only met him a few times: he was the father of a friend of mine from college. He was so full of life, genuinely caring and fiercely intelligent; the only doctor that gave me any decent advice after I had my mini-stroke. He was the only doctor I interacted with at that time who actually cared about his patients, and cared greatly.

We, in America, are so proud of our Men and Women in uniform and the civilians who work beside them. While the loved ones of those who were murdered (as well as those injured and their families) have a very difficult road ahead of them, I hope they can find some comfort in knowing that the citizens of the United States of America mourns with them and will keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.

While we did not know Michael Grant Cahill, it's apparent from the short article that he truly believed in, and enjoyed, the career he chose. Many would not be able to return to work a week after a heart attack. What a shame that this man's life and passions were taken from him and his family is left with sorrow, shock and disbelief. We extend our true sympathy to his family.

Mr. Cahill trained me when I first arrived at Fort Hood. He made sure I knew how to find all the "in's and out's" on post. He always said Hello everyday. He really cared about making sure the patients got the care they deserved. I will never forget his kindness and the impact he has had on my life. He will be missed....

I loved my Uncle Mike. He had a smile and a presence that warmed the room. I am completely saddened that I will never again be in his presence, to feel his big manly hug and hear his humor.

He is my only uncle who came to my wedding, as a complete surprise! That meant so much to me to see he and his family and see his beaming face, and know that he cared so much.

He had a great passion for studying history, and I can remember his great joy at researching our family history and reading all the stories of our ancestors.

My thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Joleen, and Keely, Kerry, and James.

We recognize that this man, Michael Grant Cahill loved to serve and it is tragic that he died at the hands of a despicable coward. May God grant his family and loved ones peace as we Americans thank him for a life of service to the country he loved and we love. May God Bless Michael Grant Cahill and God Bless America.

After reading these notices of the untimely and violent ways in which these people died, I really find myself truly saddened about all of their lives, cut so short... I can not even begin to imagine the pain that their loved ones are going through, as well as those they proudly worked with and for and those they served with and for. As a proud and grateful American, I would like to offer my thanks to them and their families for the privilege of being served and guarded by individuals such as them. May God, in His true mercy and kindness, lift you into His tender hands and give you that room to cry, be angry, laugh, and remember your precious loved one.

I am also a Physician Assistant working at Ft Hood and I remember Mike fondly. I rotated through the SRP site for a few days at a time previously and he was a great co-worker and a caring medical provider.  Rumors circulated on Thursday afternoon that he had been killed in the attack but none of us wanted to believe it was true until sadly confirmed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family now...he will be missed by all who knew him.

It seems so short of sufficient to simply say, thank you. But the work you did, with the greatest of intentions is sure to have had a great impact on someone's life and on our country. Our hearts go out to your family as this terrible time in their lives. I hope amongst the sadness they remember the good times and can move forward. Rest in peace.

I first met Mr. Cahill when I went in for an examination back in 2006. I told him of my aspirations of becoming a physician assistant. He mentored me and told me to strive towards my dream. I will never forget how he took his time to explain every step to me and valued me as a person not just the next patient walking through. I thought "Wow, I want to be like that someday." I will forever keep his spirit of helping others in my heart. God bless.

As a former employee of the SRP site, I knew Mr. Cahill very well. He was one of the most caring, sweetest and kindest person that I could ever know. One thing that is true about him is that he cared deeply for the soldiers. He will remain in our hearts, forever. And to Mrs. Cahill and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
