Well if it is the kind of area where one would find a pistol in the grass you can imagine the mother wasn't very concerned about what her kid was doing or his well being, she just wanted him out of the house so she could go back to watching TV.
Just thank God that it wasn't loaded! Geez!!
I'm guessing she thought it was a toy too... on a side note, I don't let my kids play with toys they find. You never know if the former owner was sick, or what they played in, and they might come back looking for it.

Brings me back to the olde days of pre-school
The child was calling his 'find' a cigarette lighter at day care. Perhaps that is what he told his mother he 'found' as well. But if my child told me he/she found either of those, you can bet I'd be swooping down to check it faster than a dog on a pot roast! Cigarette lighter or gun - the child still could have seriously injured/killed himself or others with either one. What the heck was wrong with that woman? And no charges? Really? Because the police are more focused on figuring out who owns the gun, whose prints are on it, whether or not it was used in a crime, etc. The woman and child are already forgotten...until next time when the kid 'finds' something in the grass.

Lord, save us from stupid people. Especially stupid people who have children.
"no charges are likely" yet if the gun had been loaded this would have had a completely different outcome. I think the fact that the mother neglected to realize that her son was carrying a real firearm shows alot about her parenting skills. This could have been a real tragedy, and nothing is preventing it from possibly happening again.

Do any of you have kids? Do you know how many times they tell you that they found something, that they can do something a day? Two trillion times was the last count for mine! 99% of the time it is something they've made up in their mind. There are lighters that look like guns as well

First, the day care should expel the kid for life. Next, they should prosecute the mother because I'm 110% confident it was HER gun. The kid just stole it from her crack-head mother's purse. Next, they should cut off the family's food stamps and welfare check and make her get off her arse and get a fricken job! Oh, she should also be prosecuted for having children and being stupid. That should just about do it and thanks.
