Sorry to rain on your parade but the comment was not stupid. The world bank and the I.M.F. were key players in south America for starters. They lent money to several countries their for vast projects there. The projects were suppose to lift their countries out of poverty. All the while knowing the price tag for them was inflated beyond belief. Putting those countries in deep debt. They with help from some friends strong armed the countries leaders to take the deal or have an accident. That problem still exists there today.

It is the banksters game of extortion being played out all over the world today. Strong arm a country for their resources and put the people into what amounts to slavery. There have been many books written about this subject. Sudgest you go to your library and read some of them.

For the Greeks to be "accostomed" to two month vacations says very little about Greece and more about American workers. In most of the developed world except the USA, 4 weeks vacation to start working up to 8 weeks after 15 or more years is the standard. Apparently most countries can "afford that sort of nonsense."

American workers work the longest work-days in the longest work-weeks with the fewest breaks, holidays, vacation days, benefits, and retirement benefits of any country in the world. It is one reason that companies like Mercedes want to build cars in the US --- we are cheap labor who can be fired without a second thought.

The issue about Hellenic Railways is pretty bogus as well. It is not that the railway that could not ruin on time. It is that the EU insisted on a natiowide rail system in order for Greece to join the ECC. Greece is an extremely mountainous country and the costs of building such a railway were horrendous. But banks were more than happy to loan Greece the money to build it even though it was well known that if everyone in Greece rode it daily, it would still lose money. It was not the operation of the railway that was a problem, it was the incredible amount of money that was borrowed to build it. Just Hellenic Railways alone has debt equal to 5% of Greece's GNP. But when you look at bad loans, just as with the mortgage crisis in this country, it takes two parties (or in this case 26 parties) to make such a loan.

Anyway the EU and the IMF knew that Greece would never be able to pay back ALL of the money that was loaned, nor will they ever be able to, the problem is that the EU and the IMF shouldn't have continued to loan the money in the 1st place. There is wrong on both sides and the problem is that it's happened #1 all over Europe and is happening in the US. So what are the solutions? China is our boggy man.

Chris, my point regarding the 2 months vacation in Greece is that NO they can't afford to give those extended vacations. They can't/couldn't afford all of those cival service jobs, these are just a couple of examples of them getting into debt and never being able to get out of it unless changes are made. In 1994, after I was discharged from the USN, I bought a sailboat in Greece and sailed the Cyclades for almost a year. What I discovered was a lifestyle where job and vacation had no distinct delineation. Most of the men were fishermen, sheep herders, or owned some sort of tourist business. For recreation they either fished hung out together in the fields drinking ouzo or hung out in each others shop drinking ouzo. Not only did this system work, it has for a very long time. Our ideas of how the world should work has interfered with some very old systems that didn’t need fixing. Our promise of wealth through debt is no more than a sales pitch of a casino driven economy. I am not saying the Greeks were forced to change their lifestyle; but it seems a little sad that the wealthiest financers in America have elevated themselves as the loan-sharks of the world. This is not something to be proud of.
