He's an amazing dad," said King, who said he was Maher's eldest son. "He cares for us, provides for us and takes care of us. He's been to every baseball game, football game.
If I had stolen a Million and a Half I wouldnt have to work all the time and could make it to all my sons games and give them everything he wanted as well.
Just because hhe took everyone to the kids football and baseball games shows he cares about his children, not that he spent 1.5 mil on games. who knows maybe he he was force to take the money from the truck and was threaten if he said anything, and fled his homeland???? don't blaim his kids .
I just feel sorry for the kid who just found out he is 2 years older than he thought, and now is eligible for deportation. I'd let him stay if he is a student or well employed. The wife tho' - deport her on the same plane back as her husband. (Wonder if she was the one who tipped off police.)
Raider-4158022 Sorry, but you're an idiot and the comment posted after you. His son doesn't mean he went to professional sporting events. He means his dad was at everyone of his football games and baseball games he played as kid.
Don't you think it takes money to be able to able to make it EVERY sporting event your kids are in? Doesn't sound like he worked full time. Cable installers get paid for each instal, this man chose to watch his kids other than work on those days, I can't afford to do that, 1.5 million would guarantee I could though.
Raider comment said nothing of pro-sports, I understood it as he did. You sir are the idiot for your lack of understanding,
Raider-4158022 Sorry, but you're an idiot and the comment posted after you.
@Gibsonlespaul....jeez having a bad day? Thx for the kind words though. Looks like I mis-understood the writers intent. In my defense I wasn't the only one, (a few ppl "liked" my comment & see blubal42 & Ken Trout). No need for you to get all in a twist over. Relax, it's Friday.
They arrested him later, after immigration officials determined he was in the U.S. illegally.
Hmmmm, our Immigration entry control is not working now, so why would anyone think it worked in 1993 ?
Wait a minute.....he has been a "loyal" individual while working in the U.S., so DOJ, DHS, and INS.....give him and his family AMNESTY. ~TOTAL sarcasm~
Oh yeah, another fuguitive slips through the cracks. Half of the money likely went to the democratic campaign fund or to defend Mark Rich or the whitewater scandal.
Hide? He kept his last name! He was barely even trying to hide.
...when a police officer told him authorities suspected Maher was wanted in England, but they could not arrest him.
Astounding. How nice of the Nixa P.D. to tip him off that the FBI was closing in. I'm not sure who is dumber... the Nixa police for tipping him off or Maher himself for not running immediately.
He wasn't a US fugitive, so the FBI wouldn't be looking for him unless requested by the UK authorities or information suggested he was hiding in the US.
We tend to think of illegal aliens as hispanic; case in point: I'm a lawyer, and one morning, I was handling a small plea bargain case for a young blond kid. The judge was quickly going through the pro forma languauge and said you could be deported if not an American citizen, etc, etc. When the judge was finished, he asked if the defendant had any questions. "Yes, what are the chances of being deported?" The judge said, "None, that only applies to non-Americans." Defendant, " I'm a Canadian."
In 1993, one could enter the US from Canada with little or no ID, and a British citizen could enter Canada with little or no ID.
The totally unfair part is the child; England is a long way from rural America.
P. Heckler, You are the first intelligent remark out of 8 pages! Thank you. After living in 3 states where the illegals out number we taxpayers, I can honestly agree with you. Politics aside, we are a nation of milktoast mamby-pambies, afraid to call it nwhat it is. Embarrassing! We do not communcate anymore. We sit at blank screens, anonymus, making snide polkitical remarks, misunderstanding what life isall about. I feel sorry for this man's misguided family, but he should go. They should be taking classes to become legal citizens.
Leave him alone...(no sarcasm)...he's better than half our population...we're a country of criminals running from or being deported from the UK...oh...he's not in Georgia! Oh well haul his butt back to the UK.
Just because it has almost been two decades doesn't mean he should no longer have to have consequences for his actions. That is like saying someone who committed murder 20 years ago should be able to walk free simply because time has passed. No accountability? That is ridiculous. If you don't want the penalty for a crime, then don't commit one.
i know in state laws there's a statute, but this would be federal, so statute or not? I know its in England, so do they have the "federal" system like we do?
BBsdawg: Dunno about the UK, but in most states in the US, the statute of limitations do not apply while the perp is out-o-state. Besides, even if the statute did protect him from prosecution, he still couldn't keep the money because it didn't belong to him in the first place. In any case, he is still an illegal alien and, therefore, subject to deportation, regardless. Same for his wife and any children not born in the US. If the older children want to stay here to care for the minor children, that MIGHT pass muster. I wonder, after two decades on the lam, does he still think it was worth it ???
bigdaddysdawg, good question about the statute of limitations. Even if there is a statute of limitations and England does not or can not prosecute him he now has Federal GUN CHARGES in the USA to face thanks to his wife. Wonder where the money went.... 19 years at appx $78,000 a year. ?????
The statute of limitations (at least in America) only applies to persons that are not charged with a crime. I imagine they charged him the next day and the warrant is good for eternity (with a few exceptions).
I hope that when he gets back to Britain that he will be set free. by the way Lawful1 What freedom?Every law that is passed in the wash...WE loose more freedoms! REVOLUTION is coming
Heads up stupid criminals- If you get away with something you must never tell anyone-you must take it to your grave. Don't tell your mama, girlfriend, wife, brother, friends, etc. Keep you @!$%#in mouth shut.
the article does not mention anywhere that he talked about the crime to any1. You are all jumping to conclusions, could it possibly be that someone who happened to see a UK article abt this crime, and then saw the resemblance to this guy and called in the tip. Just saying we dont have all the facts here!
sounds great in theory until your girlfriend notices you never really work much but always have $ for vacations and all.
i saw this on"i almost got away with it" recently.
guy told girl, girl got into fight with guy called police and tipped them off. but how else was he supposed to explain being filthy rich and not working?
If an arrest warrant was issued, the statute of limitations doesn't apply (with few exceptions).
The SOL is for unsolved crimes; the police have only a certain amount of time to bring charges before they are barred by the SOL. (Murder being the big exception)
Sheri- you sure he didnt kill anyone? He sure threatened to kill the guy who tipped him off. What if thats the reason he moves from one side of the country to another so often.
Your blanket statement of his innocence is shocking.
Just saying that you want to kill someone does not mean you will. Have you never gotten mad at someone and say under your breath that you want to hit someone (hitting someone is assualt, a crime) yet never do it because you actually wouldn't?
Doing research the statute of limitations in England is 6 years. As he did not use force to take the money it is theft/larceny, not robbery. As stated in the article, he just drove off with the armored car he was employeed to drive while his partner was out of it making a delivery, hence theft.
Thank you David. Guess we will have to wait and see if England prosecutes him or if is is left to face charges for "GUNS" here in the US. The US Statute of limitations does not always work in the USA. It like many other Constitutionally mandated things are routinely violated by the authorities who have taken an oath to protect and defend the US Constitution against all enemies both domestic and foreign. Not saying he or anyone else for that matter should be able to get away with crime like the politicians do. Just saying that the law is the law and should work in both directions. The protections were placed in the Constitution for a reason, to keep the Government from trampling the citizens. In particular the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Amendments. Crimes will be punished. We reap what we sow. We will all have to stand before Jesus one day. I know the Constitution does not specifically specify anything about Statute of Limitations but it is the Law and should not to be violated by those sworn to uphold the law.
Now we shall she how many stupid replies come about my posting.
get him to run for political office or CEO of a company. he would fit right in with them, don't know where the money went, take it form the middle class easily, don't pay it back. I can't believe they arrested him. i think there are a couple hundred in Washington right now that need to be arrested
You are absolutely right yeager....insurance companies and airlines routinely "decide" what a life is "worth", after all, in the end, all that matters is their profit.
If he had killed twelve people in England, then fled to the US, he would never have been noticd.
Really sad. What is done in the dark will come to life. I would hate to have to constantly look over my shoulder. Feel sorry for the family. The man has probably not done anything wrong since that incident. I am sure he has learned his lesson. Unfortunately the law doesn't look at it that way. I wish the family the best.
Never hurt anyone..... unless your money was among that which he stole. If they dont string this guy up every bank in America and Europe will be at risk of the onslaught of jobless people looking to get paid an easy score in a way where 'no one gets hurt'.
Wow, ain't it wonderful he was able to go to all the sports events, etc. and be there for them. Guess that's because he didn't have to hold a job, huh? I couldn't go to all my kids' events because my job got in the way. I needed the paycheck to keep a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and clothes on their backs, so I couldn't go to all the events. Guess that makes someone like me a louse and someone like him a good guy!
I know what you mean. Sometimes it looks that way. Hey, life is not fair. But your kids will appreciate you when they hit 40 or you are dead. It will happen. Hang in there bro.
Where's all the money or what did he buy with it. 1 1/2 million can last a long time if you live a simple lifestyle.
Well the quote from his son explains some of it;
Probably 1000 bucks per game. More if he drank beer!
If I had stolen a Million and a Half I wouldnt have to work all the time and could make it to all my sons games and give them everything he wanted as well.
Raider-4158022

Would you take the 1.5 million of you knew that you could only live in Ozark, Missouri and install cable?
@Gibsonlespaul....jeez having a bad day? Thx for the kind words though. Looks like I mis-understood the writers intent. In my defense I wasn't the only one, (a few ppl "liked" my comment & see blubal42 & Ken Trout). No need for you to get all in a twist over. Relax, it's Friday.
BTW...Thx Ken Trout for taking my back.
Who was president in 1993?
Oh yeah, another fuguitive slips through the cracks. Half of the money likely went to the democratic campaign fund or to defend Mark Rich or the whitewater scandal.
wait! I protest. arresting an illegal? there ought to be a law? At least he brought money here with him.
He should have moved to San Francisco, they would have given him a pass...
he he he.
though,Im not getting all the political comments, that whitewater scandal thought is funny!
Immigration control? Ha ha - thanks for the joke!!! The USA is the best place in the world to hide. We can't find anyone or anything for 19 years.
Hide? He kept his last name! He was barely even trying to hide.
Astounding. How nice of the Nixa P.D. to tip him off that the FBI was closing in. I'm not sure who is dumber... the Nixa police for tipping him off or Maher himself for not running immediately.
i know right
He wasn't a US fugitive, so the FBI wouldn't be looking for him unless requested by the UK authorities or information suggested he was hiding in the US.

He is part of the stimulus package so quit your bitching!
The British do like their armored cars.
Really? That was over 20 years ago and it's not like he killed someone. Bygones should be bygones imo, LET HIM GO.
like 20 years ago*
Sorry, kinda tired...
Maybe he killed ppl to get free.... just like he threatened to do?
Nevertheless, he took & kept $ that wasn't his.
That tells anyone that if they rob a bank, business, government, person that they can get away with it if not caught for 20 years.
He made the decision to break the law and with that comes consequences.
He'll be deported in a New York minute. Unfortunately for him, no politicians are sucking up to the English voter bloc.
@Helena,
Our government does that to us all the time, not to mention our beloved politicians ..
Our Goverment don't like competition.......
Just because it has almost been two decades doesn't mean he should no longer have to have consequences for his actions. That is like saying someone who committed murder 20 years ago should be able to walk free simply because time has passed. No accountability? That is ridiculous. Lets see, 19 years ago and no one got hurt. Is there a statute of limitaions in England?
No one got hurt? Are you his wife's lawyer?
What about the people who lost their money to this thief? What if he killed ppl to keep them from talking, like he threatened to do?
Its a little early for your statement.
I bet if he were Mexican you wouldn't think it was no big deal, right?
i know in state laws there's a statute, but this would be federal, so statute or not? I know its in England, so do they have the "federal" system like we do?

P. Heckler, Good point.
Ask him if he knows D.B.Cooper.
I wonder if racial profiling was involved?
America. Land of the free, until the FBI gets a good tip.
I hope that when he gets back to Britain that he will be set free. by the way Lawful1 What freedom?Every law that is passed in the wash...WE loose more freedoms! REVOLUTION is coming
well he eventually told someone about his past that's how a lot of criminals get caught they have big mouths.
"Show me the money"!!!!!
Heads up stupid criminals- If you get away with something you must never tell anyone-you must take it to your grave. Don't tell your mama, girlfriend, wife, brother, friends, etc. Keep you @!$%#in mouth shut.
Or how about not committing the crime in the first place there Einstein.
Buck, they just can't help but want to talk about it... LOL
Buck would you give that advice if it was your stuff he stole?
the article does not mention anywhere that he talked about the crime to any1. How long before stealing isn't considered stealing anymore?
The answer is; never. Just because the law puts limits on accountability doesnt mean you are no longer accountable for the crime.
It is a crime that will be punished here or later when we have to account for our lives actions....Just telling it like it is!!!
@richfine,
I believe there is a statute of the Queen, maybe Chuck too???

He should get amnesty. Just because you are in the country illegally is no reason to be arrested.
Sarcasm ... I presume? However, more than a grain of truth. Illegal and slaughter American citizens and get amnesty. Sound about right?
What the hell are you talking about, "IQ 168 (big lie there, eh?)"? He didn't kill anyone.
Sheri- you sure he didnt kill anyone? He sure threatened to kill the guy who tipped him off. What if thats the reason he moves from one side of the country to another so often.
Your blanket statement of his innocence is shocking.
Villian157, Your assumption that he killed somebody is even more shocking.
I agree boxer!
Boxer... if he THREATENED to kill the informant as the story states, then it stands to reason the action has crossed his mind.
His statement indicates he is willing to kill someone to avoid being caught.
It it really 'shocking' to assume he might do what he said he wanted to do? -.-
Just saying that you want to kill someone does not mean you will. Have you never gotten mad at someone and say under your breath that you want to hit someone (hitting someone is assualt, a crime) yet never do it because you actually wouldn't?

"run for political office or CEO of a company" NO! You get appointed to those positions by BH O'Carter and the chicago machine.
Hey opp, do you live in Washington????
True. But we should add that government workers and politicians should be included.
Poor guy, he will probably get a longer sentence than a murderer. ( after all, he took money, not just a life)
Totally agree. Like was posted before he should have kept his yapper shut. Poor kids though. Cant imagine
You are absolutely right yeager....insurance companies and airlines routinely "decide" what a life is "worth", after all, in the end, all that matters is their profit.
If he had killed twelve people in England, then fled to the US, he would never have been noticd.
So true.
So true
I suspect he will be deported after the US charges are dropped, and then get a fairly short sentence in the UK.
They should start up Enron again. He could definatley be the CFO.
Innocent until proven guilty! Sad for his son. His 'wife' should have protected the kid from this and left years ago.
Not all of us originate from the Geogia crew - some came later and were upstanding NYC folk for generations - until the automobile came into play!
" Bailing out his son?". The apple does'nt fall far from the tree!
Yet the son wasn't held by INS
Son was arrested for domestic which turned out to just being a loud verbal arguement. Arrested does NOT mean convicted.
Waiting for the "CLOSE THE BORDERS!" "ILLEGALS!" contingent to appear...
Predictable...
Have a nice day.

buying a $1,300,000 dollars in tea will tip off the "keystone cops"
"He never hurt anyone" Classic!
do you consider robbing a corporation hurting a person?
Never hurt anyone..... unless your money was among that which he stole. If they dont string this guy up every bank in America and Europe will be at risk of the onslaught of jobless people looking to get paid an easy score in a way where 'no one gets hurt'.
weyant: ask Martha Stewart if robbing a corporation hurts the people whose money the corporation is holding. LOL

not at all, you support your family and do what you can im sure. if you dont then you already know the answer to your question.
he already said he does.... lol
I know what you mean. Sometimes it looks that way. Hey, life is not fair. But your kids will appreciate you when they hit 40 or you are dead. It will happen. Hang in there bro.
No it doesn't make you a louse. It makes you a good man with a sense of responsibility and I'm sure your kids know it.
