Wow! What a relief. As soon as I saw a headline about a crooked historian I thought of Newt. So glad he will be able to continue leading the circular firing squad...
What do you mean? The man who instantly comes to mind is the stellar Democrat , Sandy Berger. You know , the former United States National Security Adviser. He was caught red-handed stealing historical documents from the National Archives. He admitted that he hid some of the documents in his pants and socks. Apparently he was trying to eliminate documents created by the Clinton administration in the lead up to the 911 attack. To the charges , he plead Guilty.
Burger took xerographic copies which had been provided for his review only. He was not permitted to take notes or to make his own copies. They were not originals.
old lawyer ------- In 2005 Sandy Berger was found guilty of illegally removing highly classified documents from the National Archives and intentionally destroying some of them.
As one aspect of his sentence, he was fined $50,000.
Just after his sentencing , he said he deeply regretted his actions.
What do you think would happen to you or I if we had done what he did?
I direct you to Wikipedia's biography for a brief summary of the facts. Your report is a distortion. (Are your motives pure?) He was preparing to testify before a Congressional committee and was put in a very unfair position, as the Committee staff had unfettered access to the same documents and he was limited to visual review only of a large number of documents which contained a multiplicity of discreet dates and facts. I agree, general members of the public without a history of his high office could expect different treatment in the prosecution by this Republican AG. Likely there was a proof issue related to some security misclassifications. Given how he was set up by the Committee to appear incompetent, due to his expected lack of encyclopedic memory of these complex facts, one can see how there was no malice, but that his action was the product of frustration of the position he had been put in in the face of an investigation of a catastrophe for which scape goats were being sought. I have no dog in this hunt. Good day.
old lawyer ---- Try jettisoning Wikipedia and research the actual newspaper reports of the time. I stand by my summary of his sentencing and his own comments on the courthouse steps thereafter. No aspect of my note was a distortion but , instead , exactly what happened. Try checking the CNN national archives article of September 8, 2005. Let me know if you want more. I have no dog , cat or anything else in the hunt. I just know the history of this event. Good night.
Crime is throughout the spectrum......and it might even be paramount in the White House.
Better do an inventory of the White House belongings PRIOR to Mr. Obama being elected out of office. Remember what Mrs. Obama said to guests just after they moved into their "new digs" and held some of their FIRST parties ? Yahoo it !!
First three posts relate to elected officials, so might as well take it up a notch all the way to the top of the food chain.
i know how these museums feel !!!!as the declaration of independce was stolen from meit was in the back of a picture frame and i kept it i found it true i sold the frame for 4 dollars but i put the document in my shirt pocket the one that got 2million dollars stole it from my pocket i left my shirt in my truckwhen i went to the john my fingerprints and dna r allover it i also have papers from the estate it came from i just cant afford a good lawyer!!!!!
Our public libraries are the repositories of our history. As they get defunded, cataloging and security become more difficult and this type of theft becomes easier. Public libraries aren't anachronisms, they are valuable resources that can't be destroyed by a computer virus. We need to protect them as a vital part of our national heritage.
This guy and his flunkie are a disgrace to Americans and to the field of historical studies. Their greed will be the cause of many problems for historians seeking access to original documents only to be slowed or stymied by newly inflicted security procedures.
When I was in 6th, 7th and 8th grades in grammar school I spent my free time at a local university's library. I spent my time reading America's oldest newspapers and other documents on microfilm. I became a rather common sight there and the librarians were of great help to me. Eventually I was invited to have a look at their collections of original documents etc that had restricted access. I felt privileged to be able to touch them with my own hands and it always left me with a feeling of awe. When I imagine these lowlife thieves STEALING stuff like that, STEALING some other young kid's opportunity to experience what I did it angers me beyond belief. I'm glad they were caught and I hope the judge throws the book at them. Their actions could literally affect the way our history is percieved and recorded in future generations. I hope they both get long prison sentences. They surely deserve it.
Shame on both of these supposedly educated men. Laws should be enacted to severely punish such thieves because they are stealing national treasures that are meant to be kept and shared for all Americans to view and learn more about the Heads of State. I hope the museum/library appreciates their employee for such astute diligence.

Somewhere Sandy Berger is having a good laugh. Glad that he had friends like the Clintons.
I'm an academic. He's an academic. See? We're not dull.

He watched too many national treasure movies.

his white collar will probably keep him from going to prison. prison is for blue collar folks that steal smaller sums of money or vauables.
I was only borrowing the documents—honest!
This guy's career is history.
