One thing that has been taking a hit with all the money going into the wars is the maintenance of facilities on US military bases. This, however, appears to be off base housing being provided and maintained by a contractor. There needs to be a full investigation to find out what caused this tragedy. If it turns out it was caused by lack of proper maintenance on the part of the company providing the housing complex, the people at the company who are responsible should be prosecuted. Our troops deserve to have safe places to live.
Hopefully with the troops finally home from Iraq and the prospect of Afghanistan winding down soon, more money can be out into catching up on long deferred repair and renovation work that is needed on US bases. I have to admit it has been a couple of years since I have been on any of the bases, but I doubt it has changed much in that time. Our troops deserve to have base housing that is a safe, decent place to live. I think that many people would be surprised at the condition of some of the quarters on bases, particularly bachelor enlisted quarters. They are clean enough, but tend to be quite old and in need of some serious updating. Things seem to be better on Air Force bases than on Navy, Marine Corps, and Army bases.
I just hope that those who were injured make a speedy and complete recovery and my sympathies go out to the family of the woman who was killed. Burns are very painful injuries both physically and, depending where they were burned, emotionally as well. I hope that they get all of the care and support they need.
This is so sad. My thoughts are with the families. I hurt every time our Troops get hurt, never mind when they fall. But in the homeland no one is prepared, to hear such news.
My husband is a "Nam" Vet. I am very grateful and thank all of our folks who try and protect us always.
This explosion had nothing to do with terrorists, it appears to have been an accident. Please do not start rumors, they do a disservice to everyone involved.
Another quality repair or installation by KBR-Haliburton! Remember the soldier and airmen electrocuted while taking showers? We will never get the truth from this Government.
Read my post. I lived there less than a year ago. Worked at a propane company that does NOT service base housing. Word has been that there were big problems there and my company did not want the lucrative business because they would have had to make major upgrades to the system and fix all the problems in order for it to be safe enough for them to service it. The place is run by a private company. THEY are responsible for the infrastructure there. Not a government issue. This incident was really just a matter of when not if.
They were using unqualified people to do electrical work. Anyone that has done this kind of work knows this has to be grounded & ground fault interupter breakers should be used on anything that is near water. GFI's trip out at .05 milliamps before it can kill anyone.
My thoughts and prayers for these Marines & their families. It's hard enough without having to endure this accident. While serving at this base in 1953 we had no housing, heat or hot water in the winter. Hopefully you will at some point have a happy life. Thanks for your service.
Yes, and if they get total control of US House and Senate as well as Presidency there'll be even more de-regulation so that companies can run roughshod and untrolled likely resulting in many more accidents of various sorts.
My condolences to the marines family and to all the innocents that were involved.
Truly a sad story.
What is even sadder is that if there is a conservative take over of this government, more of these incidences will occur because of the conservatives tendency to totally dismiss laws, rules and regulations that are in place now that try to help stop these problems.
Privatized is the key word to this entire sad story.
There is nothing in this article that indicates to me that any laws, rules or regulations were dissmissed by anyone. If there were laws, rules and regulations in place that could have prevented this tragedy, they were obviously ignored. Maybe we need more laws, rules and regulations that focus on the people who ignore laws, rules and regulations... and so on...

Tell me about it! Our government can't do anything right... wait a minute... doesn't the government represent us? If it does we are in trouble. If it doesn't we are in bigger trouble.
I used to live there and have friends who still do, including an evacuated family. My thoughts and prayers to all of those affected. That propane distribution system was known to have issues. The private company that owns and runs this base housing system likely knew about it too. Not a government issue. The issue is solely with the private company that runs it, as far as I can tell. I truely hope they get to the bottom of it and make sure that this type of incident does happen again.
I believe the US Military is responsible for ensuring their members live in safe housing when that housing is military housing. If their were known issues, the military leadership should have taken whatever steps were necessary to address those issues and then bill the company or withhold payment of "rents" to compensate.
Base housing is secure. Security gate, cameras everywhere, foot and vehicle patrols. It can be accessed, but no one who didn't belong would be able to be there for long.
This is a result of private services that can do it better than the government employee. Look at Ft Bragg and the infant deaths there, private prisons/jails and the number of rapes, drugs and mental health issues. It sickens me every time some tea bagger blames a working stiff that is a government employee that is not getting rich for all of our government fiscal woes. Cutting corners concerning life safety to save a buck at the profit of the private sector needs to be a criminal offense.
This was off base housing. The gas supply came from a private company. Perhaps if the work had been done by military personnel who knew thier friends and families would be living there this would not have happened. Years ago almost all base jobs were manned by military. There are highly qualified military personnel who work for peanuts compared to what the private sector costs. So why are we throwing money away to private companies who cut corners and disregard safety in order to increase their profits?
It's the privatized aspect mentioned that concerns me, considering that contracts between private entities and the military continue to be pretty much the biggest source of fraud in the government. What's few lives in the name of profit.
Chuckler,I think your comment is totally uncalled for and so very ignorant!!Does it not bother you that a person lost her life because someone failed to do their job to maintain the upkeep of those housing units, and ensure everyone is safe to live in their own homes? Those military personnel are the ones who keep us in this country safe, and it's the very least we can do to help keep them safe while they are home, and not in a foreign country fighting to make damn sure we are safe here at home!!! God Bless them all,and you as well for your total ignorance. How would you have felt had it been one of your familly members?
My condolences and deepest sympathies for all the Marines and their loved ones. It hurts to realize that you are the ones we count on when an enemy threatens us, and we - as a society - sometimes fail to protect you at home.
If Lincoln Military housing is where this happened, it is a Public/Private venture.
Privatized housing is also referred to as Public/Private Venture, or PPV, housing. It is owned by a private partner and governed by a business agreement in which the DoD has limited rights and responsibilities. The private entity is responsible for managing the construction, renovation, maintenance and day-to-day maintenance along with services of the community. PPV housing may be located on or off government property, and may be former military housing.
Apparently The DoD has mandated that all Military Housing will be privatized before the end of this decade. The reason behind this mandate is that private partners are able to more efficiently build, renovate, and manage housing, and at less expense than the government. The private partners are also incentivized to provide quality products, management and services. The success of these partnerships is tied to the number of service members who choose to live in installation housing, and therefore, the private partner has incentives to keep the homes and surrounding grounds well maintained and the residents pleased.
I totally agree with you HawkEyes.. There sure are so many other ways to keep warm.Gas is so very dangerous..But as i stated, there should have been some kind of inspection of everything related to the gas sources there before this terrible tragedy, not after..God be with them all...
So sorry for the loss of your wife.My prayers are with you and all of the other families involved in this incident.Such a shame. What I would like to know is why are these things are not inspected until after a tragedy such as this occurs?Everyone knows how unsafe gas is in any form!! Maybe had there been an inspection of all gas lines and such, this terrible tragedy may very well have been avoided...
Prayers and condolences to the friends and families of the person killed and for those who were injured.
Much thanks to all of those who voluntarily sacrifice to protect us and US on a daily basis.

They need secure compounds from the terrorists.... Sad.. I feel terrible for the families..
God bless them!

Shame on rosewine for implying there was a darker purpose lurking behind this tragic accident.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the victims and their families.

Semper Fidelis my fellow Marines. Sorry about your loss. You are all in my prayers along with all active duty and veterans soldiers.

I agree with you hopy005 the infrastructure was probably not up to code for something like this to happen.

You're right........Marine urine should be used only on dead enemy combatants........
What does one have to do with the other!?!?!?
Oh, you didn't read that story?........or see the video?...........or read the republican rebuttals?.......
My condolences and deepest sympathies for all the Marines and their loved ones. It hurts to realize that you are the ones we count on when an enemy threatens us, and we - as a society - sometimes fail to protect you at home.
This happen to me on a base in Indianapolis in 1990. Hope all is well and healthy!
This happend at a post we lived at in 1990. Very poor living conditions at the time.

Another fact of proof ~ 'GAS' is 'not' a safe energy source.
Gas and oil should be shelved in the archives as being antiquated
ways of heating our homes...so many other SAFE energy alternatives!!!
