I hope the Feds bring the anvil of justice down on this POS. Unfortunately, even if he is indicted, he'll still be able to keep his pension. His pension along with the pension of the other four officers should be forfeited and donated to the hispanic victim. That would be ironic justice....
This guy should have been fired, not allowed to resign. At a minimum. You know something F-cked up is going on if the FBI has to investigate the police department of a city like Hartford.

I know because the police and the government really doesn't provide protection for citizens who are constantly discriminated against by corporations or by local police.
If you look at the number of people who are discriminated against because of their background, you will find that it not only happens for arrests but, also occurs even more when employers do hiring or firing.

Equality, Although I believe this gut is a POS, in this country he's innocent until proven guilty. What they should do is put him on administrative leave (not letting him retire) and wait for the verdict. If he's guilty, no retirement and all pay since the day of his violation (not the day of conviction but the day the occurrence(s) happen) should have to be repaid.

Well - I can see the jury here at Newsvine has convicted the chief without the bother of a trial. What we should be asking for is Justice for all.

First why have you already convicted these officers before they have gone to court? This police chief should take some lessons from my favorite law enforcement officer Sheriff Joe Arpaio here in Arizona and take no crap from the libs, media and the Justice Dept for doing his job. "It was too emotionally upsetting" for him to go and simply face his own actions at a hearing........Is this because the reality of his behavior might have sunken into his skull and he is being called on it? If he stood by his actions and words (isnt that what public figures are supposed to do?) I would think he would appear at the hearing and proudly defend his actions. Being questioned about his actions would be too upsetting and thus he didn't appear? I am accountable for my actions every day at work. If I were questioned about something and called from home and reported "your questioning of what I did is too emotionally upsetting I cant face it". I would be fired immediately. (and all of my work performance would likely be evaluated and reviewd suspicisously as a result of my evasion).
It is very unfortunate that people like AZ Desertcatz, whom are of Latino heritage are the most racist against their own kind--especially by mentioning Arpaio. The guy may be claiming to do his job but man is that guy racist.
I see a lot of posters calling for vengeance against the Chief, but shouldn't we have some facts before condemning someone? And how about a fair hearing?
The racial/ethnic animosity since Obama took office seems to have gotten worse, not better since the first 'post-racial' President was elected. And now Obama intends to be even more strident in his 'class warfare' rhetoric, which is getting close to 'race/ethnic conflict' in its tone.
I think we need a President that can bring us together, not one that seems to divide us more than ever. This type of rhetoric may work well in Chicago politics, but it does a great disservice to the country.

These police weren't protecting citizens of East Haven, they were using their authority to intimidate local residents and shake down businesses--those are criminal acts no matter what ethnic group those on the receiving end belong to. Save your 'only doing their duty' defense for public officials who actually deserve it, rather than trying to paint these criminals as victims just because they're wearing blue, and because you think minorities are less deserving of the protection of the law.

Hey Frisky Frauline, that is part of the problem with racism. If the police want to find an issue with someone they will. How is it that in all areas of the US the crime is alway higher with minorities areas then the white areas? The answer is easy. Its because the police are not looking at the white population. You will never find crime in a all white neightborhood because the police don't go their. However, most of the white collar crimes, sexual predators, child abuser, and rapist are committed by white people. Also crimes committed in those areas are seldom covered by the media which give the impression that crime is rarely committed by whites. I am not saying we don't have a problem with illegals in this country because we do. I just saying all the problems are not caused by illegals. Its seem more a more people are blaming all negitive issue in america on illegals which in fact the whole issue with illegals was caused by white americans.
FF: The majority of crimes are committed by whites. I don't hear anyone saying that police can't look among minorities for criminals. But that isn't what these cops were doing. They were illegally victimizing members of a particular minority group, in many cases in flagrant disregard of "probable cause." Some of those people they victimized may, in fact, have been guilty of crimes, but that in no way excuses the crimes these "officers of the law" committed.

Only if that person is some sort of shade of brown. Take a look at my picture, I'm about as "white girl" as you get, and I've definitly done my fair share of driving around at 3am. Never once has I, or any other who looks similar to me (that I know of at least) been pulled over simply because the officer wanted to know what we were doing out and about.
Proactive police work isn't profiling, it begins with community outreach and building trust with your citizens. This is the opposite, if true, of proactive police work. You can not take a protected class (i.e. race, religion, national origin, gender) and use it as the sole reason for stopping someone. If a crime has been committed and a witness has given a discription which includes a protected class, than you can stop members of that class, who fit that description, not just blanketly stop everyone who's the same color.

However, our Constitution disagrees with you, and, might I remind you, having the right to an opinon, doesn't necessarily give you the right to act upon it. My tax money pays policemen to uphold that Constitution, not trample the rights of others just because we're currently going through a "manufactured boogieman" stage. I could drone on and one about ITIN numbers that ensure SS taxes are taken out of all workers paychecks regardless of immigration status. I could mention how 1996 Wefare Reform excluded undocumented people from means tested assitance, or how 8 million out of 11 million undocumented workers file income tax returns, but I'm sure you're vociferous hatred is rooted in your psychology, in which case all the facts in the world won't help.
I will let you know, however, that just because you're willing to bypass you're civil rights, the natural and legal latino citizens in our country shouldn't have too, nor (gasp) should the undocumented ones.

Unfortunately, as recent events have proven, many police forces purposely look for those with lower IQ's. The official reasoning? Smart people would find the job unfulfillable, and would eventually quit. The likely real reason? Smart people would likely question illegal orders are less likely to discriminate. A recent Federal court ruling even confirmed this form of "employment screening" (see discrimination) to be legal.

Oh - are you applying the same standard as Obama did when he claimed a cop "acted stupidly" for arresting someone (Prof Gates) who appeared to be breaking into a home? There was no doubt that Gates was indeed breaking into a house - it was later found that the house was his own (charges were dropped immediately after the facts were clear). Was it just a coincidence that Gates was a black friend of Obama? Do you think a cop should ignore people breaking into homes?

The article is correct...I think his annual pension starts at $51,000 or $54,000...town leaders wanted to fire him before he 'retired' to avoid having to write a check for over $100,000 to pay him for unused sick time and holiday time...that's right $100,000+. His retirement guarantees the check.

In this screwball state it does not matter what crime you committed, right up to stealing taxpayer money...if you sign your retirement papers, your pension, your payment for unused sick, holiday, & vacation time, and your lifetime health insurance are set-in-stone guaranteed.
As long as I can remember, East Haven has been known to have a corrupt police force. It's really too bad because I am sure there were many good cops. It just seems to be the "way it is" in some of those shoreline police forces. Not just East Haven. Look at New Haven for example! I can't begin to explain it, but maybe this will help get rid of some of the rotten apples once and for all.

go to courant.com or nhregister.com. front page stories. this has been going on for decades. the word on the street is that as many as 15 cops are looking at indictments. the irony for me is that one person mentioned in these stories, jon einhorn is the most honest person i know. he is the only lawyer i ever had.

What this story and the link to the indictment fail to point out is what is the percentage of Hispanics who live in this "community" are ILLEGAL or likely to be ILLEGAL...
I did read one woman's statement that she was a CITIZEN of the CITY! That is a far cry from being a LEGAL Citizen of the USA or even a LEGAL resident (Green Card).
I don't condone police brutality but I also don't condone ILLEGAL ALIENS claiming RIGHTS of Citizens. If they are ILLEGAL and have mortgages and paying taxes then they are committing several CRIMES! It isn't an abnormality for that to happen.

In the past few years there has been an influx of mexican and brazilian immigrants, who might not be here legally, but c'mon, they are not as large a group as me fellow Puerto Ricans. For the record, I am of Puerto Rican descent as well, and I too lived in CT. So please, before you all start with the legality of latinos in the US, know that a 4 million Puerto Ricans live in CONUS and we are AMERICAN!

Not defending the wrong doing of cops and/or mayor, etc., BUT, that being said, many and most of the attitudes towards latiino's is NOT that they are Latino's, but that they bring gangs, corruption, crime, destruction to a city or town. When they clean up their act then the attitude will change towards them. When they become productive citizens of a community then the attitude will change - the same attitude prevails with blacks - not because their skin is black, but its what they do and how they act. Unfortunately, they are their own worst enemy and they never seem to learn a danged thing. The same thing has happened in my area and I'm in the midwest so Conn. doesn't have a corner on this attitude. I would hate to be judged on the dumbest thing I've ever done - let alone have it ruin my career and have it become national news - and that is assuming I was guilty of having done it in the first place. Political posturing or political correctness can account for a district attorney moving forward with a case once it has been sensationalized in the news. Why do we assume the worst about people who have been accused of something? The news media panders to our worse instincts and ruins careers of people who may very well be innocent of what they are charged of. How we react to news is what makes the pandering possible in the 1st place.

Would you care to explain how standing up for people's civil rights ruins this country? I thought the bill of rights was pretty clear in the 4th ammendment with regard to illegal search and seizure. I'm usually a person who argues for rights of the accused no mater how guilty they are, but with police I am forced to pause. Getting a police officer charged in the first place, even with video and testimony proving beyond all doubt they did something illegal is difficult. Let alone convicting them with the blatant preference given to them in the justice system including the ability to destroy evidence that could have been used against them, special escorts by on duty officers, low/no bail, limited charges and the weight given to an "officers word". If the police were put on a level playing field in court with the rest of us I'd wholeheartedly agree with you, until then I usually police to have done at least some of what they are accused of.
So, in other words, you are as biased as anyone posting on this Vine. You don't believe in the rule of law and the presumption of innocence.
