The oil belongs to Canada - Canada can do whatever they choose to do with THEIR oil. The pipeline to British Columbia would be through Canadian territory. Canada can do whatever they choose within their own country.
Why would a nation that wishes to become an 'oil power' decide it does not want to control the oil resources it owns? Why would Canada choose to be dependent on the United States? Is there something about this project that is too risky for Canadians?
The Keystone XL pipeline would be constructed in OUR country. We, as Americans, decide what is built or not built within the United States.
The Republican arguments for Keystone XL is about letting Canada and China dictate policy within the United States. Does the Republic of China control the Republican Party in the US?
More like Obama and Epic Save. I live in the midwest and I sure as hell don't want that line going through my area of the country. It's usually people like you who probably live far away from something like this that want it. Most people don't want it in their backyard.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada's national interest makes the $5.5 billion pipeline essential. He was "profoundly disappointed" that U.S. President Barack Obama rejected the Texas Keystone XL option but also spoke of the need to diversify Canada's oil industry. Ninety-seven percent of Canadian oil exports now go to the U.S. "I think what's happened around the Keystone is a wake-up call, the degree to which we are dependent or possibly held hostage to decisions in the United States, and especially decisions that may be made for very bad political reasons," he told Canadian TV.
Sorry Harper but you arent the only one that was and is profoundly disappointed by Obama's political games. I have a feeling within several decades our children will be looking back with disgust at this decision.
Sadly I see this has only the beginning of Canadian oil vanishing overseas, has they build up the logistics route to cater to oversea markets. More and more Canadian oil will be bought up by India and China.
The Republican arguments for Keystone XL is about letting Canada and China dictate policy within the United States. Does the Republic of China control the Republican Party in the US?
By your logic, China is in control of the Dem party, since they want the oil shipped to their ports, which the dems are actively advocating for.
I'm glad you don't work in the building department. You are the type that will let your rich brother come in and get a permit to build a building with no drawings or even tell you where he wants to build it at. Remember, they don't know where it's going yet. They said on the news the other days, that they will provide that information by the end of September. Also, you should be thinking the governor of Nebraska (a repug by the way) for stopping the pipeline. He was the one who said they could not not run it where they wanted to. Besides, once they get to Texas. They are only going to ship it over seas any way.
It will be built. The pipeline was delayed not cancelled until after the elections. Obama punted this to avoid political fallout from his base, but he won't suffer anything after the elections (and he will win re-election). The only other time he has delayed drilling was after that horrible underwater oil spill in the gulf, when he wanted to review the safety standards of any new drilling to stop anything like that from happening again. After that he has only encouraged more fracking and drilling.
The US has greatly increased domestic oil output under this administration, so much so that we are exporting more than we are importing for the first time since 1949. So b**tchin about a delay in an oil pipeline is election year political theater from the GOP.
The real solution for America can be found in this fact from the article:
if every Chinese burned oil at the rate Americans do, China's daily consumption would equal the entire world's.
China is drowning in their own poison. We shouldn't let Oil Company money and Tea Party thinking do the same to America. We should move forward in finding ways to grow our economy without sucking all of the oil from the Earth. (Something President Obama is a leader in supporting.)
It would be a shame if Canada allowed this pipeline to poison their own environment, but it would actually be a positive thing for America. From the article:
Longer-term, if Canadian oil goes to China, that means China's demand is being met by a non-OPEC country, and that's a good thing for global oil supply. Right now we are spending an awful lot of time finding ways for China to meet its demand from some place other than Iran. Canada would be a great candidate.
Obama's middle name is FAILURE, but there are some things he does great, he spends money like water and he begs for money very good, he takes 8-10 million dollar vacations on Americans dime while the AMERICA is suffering economically, Maybe he can get some money back from Solyndra, or Ener1, or from Chrysler the Italian car company Americans bailed out, or maybe some of the billions still owed by GM- Government Motors, and maybe just maybe the EPA will one day let Obama have permission to grant jobs with out CRAZY restrictions, or I forgot there will be shovel ready jobs soon right? And we sure do not need the oil from the Keystone Project how ever our best friend China deserves it right? Maybe Obama will have a beer summit and discuss it? And Obama will not forget his drug lords in Mexico either, and maybe just maybe Americans will kick out Obama FAST & FURIOUSLY in 2012.!
St. Claire-3822173, for once and for all, we are NOT getting the oil from this Keystone project, quit dribbling your republican talking points. By the way, Obama will win again.
That's an absurd line of reasoning. We are transitioning off of oil to electric vehicles, but it will take 25-50 years to do so. That means we have to continue to produce oil for that length of time. The very fact that Canada is disappointed on our decision shows what THEY think is important to them. It's not for you to decide!
Oil is a commodity, it doesn't matter where it comes from excepting political issues like Iran. It is much better for us if we get oil from our friends than the middle east, not necessary, but better. Should an uprising occur and the middle east is shut down, our pipeline would be real important.
Your quote from the article is equally absurd, obviously written by a leftist idiot. What difference does it make to "global supply" where China gets it's oil?
The whole article is just more leftist propaganda trying to excuse Obama's incompetence.
Gee, how many would clap for the President had he approved a pipeline that he could not say where it was going. While they are trying to get the new route done ASAP, before Feb 21, there would still notbe time for study before the deadline.
The President did not make that deadline, others did.
Why would Obama 'kill' a project that would 'create jobs'? Obama's presidential campaign will be against the economy - the Republicans don't even need to show up.
The 'political' thing for Obama to do would have been to approve the pipeline and travel around the country pointing to the jobs he was creating. Just like the Republicans want to do ...
The Republicans are only proving they do not know how to govern. Another clear demonstration that Republicans haven't got a clue about what they are doing ...
Obama will lose, and the Keystone project will move forward when the Republicans win in 2012, there is no way that the failures of this President will get him re-elected and he even knows it. Obama said no to jobs but said yes to Mexican drug lords in a very FAST & FURIOUSLY way and you are proud of this, then you to must hate America as much as Obama does.
Stclaire it is you and people like you that hate America. You would let the Pipe line pollute our land and water and air, for what? Profit for Canada and to get oil to the Chinese. it would be one thing if we were going to get that oil. Most Americans didn't know that all of the oil coming from Alaska went to Japan. While were with out oil in the 70's. like someone else said, Oil goes to the highest bidder. So we should take a change of a big oil spill so Canada can make all the money, Then when we refine the oil what is to be done with the sand? We get stuck with it, Not Canada and China. President Obama did the right thing again, Deal with it.
At least the tinfoil industry is doing well I see...Many people with hats on here...
Let's review some facts:
1.)The pipeline is only in the planning stages, but yet wanted a permit from the government without a definite plan. Do you want this pipeline going through national parks, lake regions, and nature preserves?
2.)Obama himself said that if they resubmitted a solid plan he would give it a serious look.
3.)What is all this crap about Mexican drug lords? It has nothing to do with this issue, and it sounds like a bunch of 'spin' from the far right.
I'm an independent, and won't be voting in the coming election unless a great independent arises, but it shocks me at how painly uneducated some people that post on here are. You listen to what Rush Limbaugh and the like have to say and regard it as canonical truth! I don't see the left attacking the right in this election(yet). Probably because the right is doing a good enough job running itself into the ground. Wake up, ABOLISH POLITICAL PARTIES, and get one with rebuilding this country outside of partisan politics!
P.S. If Gingrich wins maybe we can build a pipeline to the moon to support his colony that's going up by 2020. I seem to remember PSA's from the '50's promissing the same thing by 1962...
Why did he delay it instead of cancelling it (as many of you are falsely claiming)?
If the environmentalists are claiming this pipeline is the end of the world, why didn't he cancel it instead of giving it more time for review?
Obama has allowed our domestic oil output to increase enough that our oil exports are greater than our imports, (first time in 63 years) So there is no reason to suggest that this isn't anything more than a delay. And a short one at that.
Right now - today - there is an oil boom taking place in North Dakota. North Dakota is hiring anybody to work in the oil fields. The gas fields in the eastern US are expanding - and - they are hiring workers, too.
There is already good demand for workers in oil production. How is TransCanada going to find workers to build its pipeline? Is the pipeline going to be built with Canadian workers?
Why would we want to risk taking workers away from the North Dakota oil fields to build a pipeline for a Canadian company? Isn't developing US oil resources a Republican priority? Why are Republicans choosing to support a Canadian company instead of supporting businesses in the US?
Here, several hundred people gathered for hearings on whether a pipeline should be laid from the Alberta oil sands to the Pacific in order to deliver oil to Asia, chiefly energy-hungry China.
The fear of oil spills is especially acute in this pristine corner of northwest British Columbia, with its snowcapped mountains and deep ocean inlets. People here still remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989, and oil is still leaking from the Queen of the North, a ferry that sank off nearby Hartley Bay six years ago.
The seas nearby, in the Douglas Channel, "are very treacherous waters," says David Suzuki, a leading environmentalist. "You take a supertanker that takes miles in order to stop, (and) an accident is absolutely inevitable."
So... How is this pipeline going to help us? Canada want to ship their oil through our prestine lands so they can sell it to China while we take all the risks of oil spills and leaks in our lands, Gulf or the Pacific? Sounds like we are getting screwed. It's like saying that we want Canada to build our nuclear power plants in their land and we keep all the electricity.

I don't think you understand. Two seperate pipelines. The one that was going to be in the US is on hold. The one for export to China would be built only in Canada.
"Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, reported in his 2010 financial disclosure form—the most recent available, filed on May 15, 2011—that he owned Transcanada stock worth between $115,002 and $300,000 (financial disclosure forms ask members to report their assets within broad ranges)."
"Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., reported owning between $15,001 and $51,000 in TransCanada stock in his 2010 financial disclosure; according to his office, the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee sold his stock on January 5, 2011."
"Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Ill., has held Trans Canada stock since 2004; her most recent disclsosure shows she owns a stake in the company worth between $1,001 and $15,000."
Seems to me with Republican members of congress having a direct financial interest in putting through the pipeline, Americans should want a very thorough review before allowing the pipeline to be constructed.
Furthermore, our 'First Nation' brothers oppose pipelines through their lands and they are in line to directly receive millions of dollars should a line be built. Funny ain't it. The folks that have been good stewards of our lands for thousands of years oppose these projects.
Maybe all of you hotshots who want to rush in where Angels fear to tread ought to just chill your jets there for a minute and allow the adults (President Obama) do the thinking.
And parenthetically, I didn't know that they allowed white supremacists to blog from the prison library.
Thanks Silver Flyer for finally bringing a reason to the table for why the GOP is pushing this pipeline. The pipeline would bring no oil to the US; we would get the waste product while all the oil would go to China anyway. None of that is intended for the US. So why should we destroy our environment to make a few Republicans rich? Let the Canadians destroy their environment to ship oil to China.
Better to wait until somebody figures out how to work with tar sands without so much pollution.
Newt knows that the people listening to him won't look past his sound bite. Had they done that, a few questions might have popped up in their minds.
Like:
1. How can Obama "create a Chinese-Canadian partnership" that "truly a danger to this country.", when Canada and China already had their agreement for the oil?
2. By the way Newt was talking he seems to be implying that the Chinese were going to build a pipeline from China to Canada because we (the US) didn't build it. And that don't make no sense since China is so far away.
The longer Obama denies the pipeline to Texas, the longer we have to depend on buying oil from our enemies in the Middle East and Venezuela - enriching terrorists.
No, he denied it so his buddy warren buffet would not lose mountains of money transporting it on his trains. But you wont hear that on MSNBC will ya folks. He doesn't give a rats ass about the environment or our country.
If Canada is really going to turn to China, I just hope there is a super-secret US Manhattan project in the works right now that will soon rid the US of its dependency on oil. Then America can say goodbye to OPEC, not worry about pipelines cutting up US farmland, and not care about who is selling oil to whom.
Good luck to the Canadians building a pipeline across the Rockies! Anyway, the US is still the biggest consumer of oil in the world. The tar sands will still be there in a years time, and Harper will still want to sell the US oil.
they only want to pipe to Houston so they can ship it out to China and other countries. If this oil was for U.S. purposes, they wouldn't spend the money to build a pipeline all the way to Texas. Think about it. There are refineries in OK, MO, OH, and Canada! Texas is an international shipping hub!!
People like you need to stop watching FOX Faux News and wake up!
Canada should build refineries right at the tar sand site, then truck gasoline to her own people.
Let China drill for oil at home and produce her own gas just like everybody else.
Refineries should be built in Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota to make gas for U.S. customers. No pipelines.
Pipelines for export has been tried and failures have occurred with loss of human life. Consider the blast that killed people in Bellingham, Washington.
The 20,000 jobs for 2 years to make the proposed Keystone pipeline could be instead 20,000 jobs to make Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota refineries. And, jobs will be maintained for years and years for people to run those refineries. Again, I believe the raw material should be used to supply Americans with gas made by Americans on American soil.
Why export oil to China and then import oil from the Middle East?
Why the big rush indeed. I happen to agree with wanting a definite plan, a definite route and a serious and valid environmental impact statement. Now, when you take a look at the oil sands and the vast ecological nightmare currently underway, you kinda wonder what that pipeline will be carrying across the US. How many folks are aware of the fact that the largest dam in history is being constructed to contain the tailings from ONE mine?
Gas prices nationwide are up 85% on average since Obama took office three years ago. Food prices are also up in part to that (and especially that BS corn-based ethanol). If you Obama voters love spending more like your president does (to the tune of $15 trillion in debt now), don't drag the rest of us into your hell.
Obama himself said he wants gas prices to rise to force alternative energy mandates (like that failed Solyndra that was a part of the Democrat near trillion dollar "stimulus" bill that Biden said in would keep unemployment from going above 8%).
And please, liberals, please grow up and stop mindlessly yammering about Rush and Fox News. You people just don't understand how childish you come across as when you can only retort with "what Rush tells you to think" and other nonsense. I certainly don't retort with "what MSNBC and CNN and the New York Times and PBS and John Stewart tell you what to think" for sure.
yes Scott I was thinking the same. We should keep the oil for this continent, built more refineries on site and train it out. China can drill for its own, or import from western Siberia or the middle east. Also refining in Texas means transporting through the Panama canal which is a very expensive transportation. Something doesn't make sense.
Finally about your question I would answer that Texas refining would make money shipping out expensive refined products while importing cheap crude from the ME. more power to them. little for America Offshore contracts.
I find it interesting that Natives of Canada don't want it and Midwest republicans don't want it either risking pollution of water supply. the only ones who want it are the Texans. I want the oil to stay on this land, refined on site and bringing the gas back down to a buck fifty to rebuild America( roads and bridges, green energy network( the main thing oil should be used for))
Gas prices nationwide are up 85% on average since Obama took office three years ago.
Which has zero to do with Obama or his energy policies, it has everything to do with world markets and speculators. The pipeline serves no one but the oil companies and their share holders which include congressional Republicans. Geeze, people, this is 2 + 2 stuff. Turn off Fox and wake up. Follow the money, ask who will benefit. It certainly isn't the American people buying gas at the pumps.
I have to stop reading this sort of stuff, I am furious. Instead of working together with Canada we are turning them away. Where is the logic in that? Is it because Canadians elected a conservative Prime Minister and we are now giving them the cold shoulder treatment?
Or is it because we are so blind these days that we can shoot ourselves in the foot without anyone’s help??!!
Ultimately it think this is about states right and a lot of states don't want this thing in their back yard. Why would be want to reap all the pollution and they reap all the real money off this thing? I know Colorado has a lot of pristine water and they don't want this running near their aquifer. Since when was the GOP against states rights? Oh right since Obama and since they see money of themselves in this project.
Oil consumption in the US is at it's lowest level in a decade. US oil companies made record profits in 2011 and are on tract to do even better in 2012. The US government does not set prices at the pump, the oil companies do. It's called capitalism. You know, free market stuff.
Also, in 2011 the biggest US export, EXPORT, was gas and oil. How will building a pipeline to transport Canadian oil from Canada to Tx , to be refined into diesel fuel, then shipped out of this country to be added to the international market going to help this country?
Jhawke is right! what is the biggest export? I'll give you a hint,
Gas And Other Fuels Are Top U.S. Exports, For First Time
,,,,,,,If this oil is not intended for export, why they wanting to pipe it all the way across the US to a port ? and why is brittish petroleum drilling off our coast, in the first place? please repubs explain this in a way that will factually make sense.....please not talking point b.s. you people always spout. Vote Ron Paul! dummies
But the environmental objections that pushed Obama to block the pipeline
Uh, no, this is misleading, the real reason Obama was "pushed to block the pipline" was because he was looking for a bigger handout from his buddy Buffett:
Warren Buffett’s Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is among U.S. and Canadian railroads that stand to benefit from the Obama administration’s decision to reject TransCanada Corp. (TRP)’s Keystone XL oil pipeline permit.
With modest expansion, railroads can handle all new oil produced in western Canada through 2030, according to an analysis of the Keystone proposal by the U.S. State Department.
MSNBC needs to stop feeding people this biased bull@!$%# and start relaying the truth behind the news stories...
Randy Thompson, a Nebraska landowner featured in The New York Times. NYT reports that if Thompson did not sell his land, Keystone would use the force of eminent domain to secure an easement to his land. How can a company, not even based in the United States, use the U.S. Federal Government to seize land? He is only one of many individuals fighting the fight against eminent domain.
Nobody lives in Alberta so who cares about poisoning the water there. Nobody is there to see the mountains being chopped down. Nobody is there to breath the poisoned air from the natural gas plants built to scrub the oil off of the rocks and sand.
Poisoning the land and air of Canada is the energy policy of the Texas oil barons and we all know that their leadership over the years has been exemplary. They said the oil in Iraq would pay for the rebuilding of Iraq, and we only had to fork over 3 or 4 trillion tax dollars! That's a hell of a deal! Thanks Bush!
ApostasyUSA - Poisoning the land and air of Canada is the energy policy of the Texas oil barons
Try at least reading the article, this is all the doing of the CANADIAN OIL CORPORATION NOT TEXAS.
ApostasyUSA - They said the oil in Iraq would pay for the rebuilding of Iraq, and we only had to fork over 3 or 4 trillion tax dollars! That's a hell of a deal! Thanks Bush! Mission accomplished!
Get over your Political Cronism. Face the Fact that as the situation changed at Iraq, President Obama's ideas did not, so the US Lost the Iraqis Northern and Southern Oil Fields to the Allies of Fundamentalist Islamic Iran the Chinese and Russian Federation. This Iraqis Oil would have paid for the US Military Liberation of Iraq for Decades, the Rebuilding of Iraq, etc.. Due to President Obama's 2009 Improved Relations with Iran Policy, Iran could do anything without US Interventions, and Iran did, Overthrowing US Allies during the "Arab Spring", Iran gains control of the Suez Canal, Mediterrian Port to strike at the Crusaders, Strategic Port at Yemen, can act as a gatekeeper at Strait of Hormuz (let Chinese and Russian Oil Shipments thru while seizing Oil Shipments to US and US Allies), US Loss of Strategic High Tech Mineral Resources of Afghanistan to Iran's Ally the Chinese, Result (not your uninformed opinion) most US High Tech must be Made In China, as the Chinese in 2011 declared Embargoes against the shipment of these High Tech Minerals out of China after being mined at Afghanistan, Result, US High Tech Manufacturing Corporations that use these materials go out of Business.
The Loss of Iraq, loss of US Ally Eqypt, US Ally Yemen means that US Ally Saudi Arabia is now surrounded by their Enemies, the Allies of Fundamentalist Islamic Iran. Your uninformed mentality is exactly what the President Obama Administration reflects (Failed Academic Idealism of the Failed US Education System that is still producing failed products (lack of cognitive research skills, lack of cognitive skills, lack of survival skills to survive long enough to gain experience, lack of being internationally competitive, etc. and yet everyone wants to keep throwing more money at the Failed US Education System (that throwing money at did not do anything before and actually got worse.)).
As far as President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" go watch the whole video on youtube.com, proof you and the Demoncraps took this OUT OF CONTEXT. As President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" pertained to the Ovethrow of President Hussein in accordance with President Clinton's US Law, H.R.4655 "Iraqis Liberation Act of 1998", Justification according to President Clinton (NOT President Bush) Weapons of Mass Destruction (IT WAS PRESIDENT CLINTON WHERE THAT WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION CRAP CAME FROM, Section 2 "Findings" of President Clinton's H.R.4655). Face it President Clinton failed to accomplish the US Law that he demanded, while President Bush "Mission Accomplished" what President Clinton could not.
During that time it was common practice for the USN ships and submarines returning from Missions to display "Mission Accomplished" Banners. But just like the 92% of US Citizens that have Never Served in the US Military you would remain uninformed of that Fact (and don't tell me you Served in the US Military your not knowning this proved that you did not). This continued until the Secretary of the Navy put and end to this "Showmanship" (big family reunion parties after the ships and submarines docked).
In my previous posts about Iraq I stated how even before the First Gulf War Sanctions, Embargoes, etc. many Nations were Oil Laundrying Iraqis Oil, as buying cheap Iraqis Oil and selling it to the US for huge profits. The loss of the Iraqis Oil resulted in Mexico starting more high risk deep water drilling, the Canadians doing environmental disaster strip mining of Oil Sands, the Saudi Arabians conducting expensive deep desert sand Oil Explorations, etc..
Your Zionism is clouding your reasoning terribly. I would hope most people in the world want peace.....and are not willing to wage war to achieve peace. It appears you prefer dictatorships over freedom and populism. Let the elite rule the world right?
Robert Husted - Now David: Your Zionism is clouding your reasoning terribly.
Your anti Jew like Hitler and the Islamic World's Alliance to Hilter 1933, is clouding what little you have of a brain, as you ASS UME, that I am a Jew.
With your Islamic Mandatory School Curriculum of Hitler's Mein Kampf taught as a success story, and the Blame the Jews for everything, "Protocols of the Wise Elders of Zion".
Robert Husted - would hope most people in the world want peace.....and are not willing to wage war to achieve peace.
You sound just like President Obama with his Academic Idealistic baloney Foreign Policies that resulted in what happened above at post #2.1.. You seem to not be able to use cognitive reasoning skills to add two nickels together to come up with the answer of a dime, as Cause + Effects = Results, this is exactly what President Obama could not do.
Robert Husted - and are not willing to wage war to achieve peace.
Another do nothing, that would stand there watching as people are being massacred. How about this you come here to Afghanistan, and when (not if due to your being uninformed) you are going to be killed, I will stand around and just watch.
Robert Husted - It appears you prefer dictatorships over freedom and populism.
Another FAILED Personal Attack, that proves that you know NOTHING about the "Middle East", Africa, Asia, just like President Obama. Just like Hitler used his propaganda to invade the Sudetenland as , "Tyrant oppressing the German people at the Sudetenland" as his excuse to invade the Sudetenland. And just like then as now, the Western Nations believed Hitler's excuse.
So what did the Egyptians, Libyans, Yemeni, etc. get. The ouster of US Allies. It seems that YOU LOVE actual Dictatorships, and Totalitarian Governments is what President Obama enabled by ignoring or thru his continued indecisions did nothing RESULTS NOT YOUR UNINFORMED NON FACTUAL OPINIONS, US Allies Overthrown and now most that are US Allies do not trust the US (loss of US Credibility due to President Obama).
Dude, you talk a lot but don't say anything. But you are entertaining. What do you think will happen in Kurdistan and who is going to tap and take their reserves.
ps pace yourself big guy because you are going to get four more years of President Obama's policies.
Alberta has 3.8 million population (according to Statistics Canada) and is among the fastest growing of Canada's ten provinces. Once among Canada's poorest provinces, it is now the richest, and oil has also helped lift other former have-nots like Saskatchewan and Newfoundland out of poverty, too.
You obviously don't know what you are talking about and have never been to Canada. These people, besides being some of the most pleasant people I've ever met, really, really protect their country from pollution.
many people live there jerk!!! canada should forget the usa because it can not sort its self out without bickering over who can fill their pockets with cash first!
Good grief Charlie Brown! Why do the Republicans blame Obama for everything, and the Democrats blame Bush for everything. Why don't we just spin it like it really is. This whole mess is Nixons fault. Going a back a few more years, Lincoln took his axe to a pipeline to the South and Washington did not tell a lie, the cherry tree he chopped down fell on a pipeline. Can we just sell all of our politicians to China? Real cheap!
First of all you have to ferret out the misinformation in this article. The worlds largest oil reserves are not in the nations stated. They are in the U.S. 2.6 TRILLION barrels of shale oil, most of it in the Green River deposit.
Then you have to get past the blathering of the politicians to understand that a pipeline burst isn't something that might happen. It will happen. The safest pipeline on the planet was made in Alaska. It leaks on a regular basis.
So no matter where a pipeline is placed, someone will be swimming in oil.
If anyone has ever been to the places where they are extracting this oil you will be appalled at what is done. But then it's all about money and people driving their four passenger cars with one person in each.
People are stupid, greedy and short sighted. Oil reveals this.
if we need oil so badly , why are gasoline diesel and jet fuel our largest export? this line is to pipe it to texas and ship it out. if you don't believe that your just dumb and unpatriotic. and why is brittish petroleum drilling off our coast?
Canadian PM Harper is going to be for a rude awakening when the law suites start piling up from both Canadian environmentalists and the Canadian native tribes.
If America is smart it we will much more aggressively pursue alternative energy sources while preserving as much oil as possible that exists on our own lands and within our offshore territories.
Even if every automobile on the face of the planet were to be fueled by non-fossil fuels starting tomorrow our nation's need for oil and the need for oil throughout the world will continue for centuries for a wide number of applications other than to just pour it into our gas tanks and burn it up. But the bottom line is that once its all gone, "That's All Folks"!
Maybe I should start making bumper stickers that read "Save The Oil".
We already have our own oil ...well now tar... sands.... don't we?
Why don't they try scrubbing the sands in the Gulf... you know that leaked only a1 or so thousand barrels a day for weeks before it was found to not be true. Where have all those millions of gallons of oil gone...?
The other oil rigs or what ever they are called are also leaking too so there should be a lot of oil/tar sands to harvest from. And it is so close to shore already. They could actually run a pipeline from araound those wells to the shore. Even if that pipeline should leak then we can just do a recoup or rescoup. LOL
The great thing is that with all the oil spills and all the other hazards that have been leaking into our water source and leaching into the soil and thus into our food source, hopefull the next generations will have evolved enough to breathe oil. All they will have to do is breathe it into a personal refinery and then fill up their car. LOL
But seriously, to those who want the Keystone pipeline, I hope you read the process that was described in the article. Imagine the amount of energy and water it will take to produce this oil and for what? It does not make sense.
If enormous amounts of energy will be used/needed to produce oil from the tar sand wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of energy efficiency and independence by using all our energy to produce energy in some other country?
What about also depleating our potable water supply in some States because a lot of water is also needed in this process?
One would think that Texas would not be so happy about this as they have been having drought for the longest time, so why would they want to destroy the water, land etc of other States, and thus impact our food source. The States that this pipeline would traverse do not want it to cross their land/ State because it would impact their watersource , grazing land etc.
Weren't ranchers in Texas selling off cattle because of the drought there? So are they going to pipe the necessary water that would be needed in the processing of the tar sands as well? Where from?
Let Canada and their conservative governor/primeminister polute their own land, water and air. Why should we become their toxic dump?
PS, why don't these oil companies clean up all the oil spill and leaks that they have done in other 3rd world countries bespoiling those countries land and water and find ways of processing it? They could even try to process the oil that the Alaskan pipeline has spilled and continue to leak. Why not clean up the oil spill/leak in Nigeria for example?
It seem that greed is a terrible thing to waste huh? LOL
Wonder if these greedy oil guys are going to be joining Newt on that Moon Base that he promises to build during the first term of his presidency? LOL
All you uniformed tree-hugging layabouts should charter a bunch of planes and ships and head on over to China and protest. A pipeline to refineries in Texas or a port on the Western coast of Canada for Chinese ships to transport across the Pacific. Hmmmmm? Which is a more environmentally friendly/resonsible situation?
You know...maybe all those lame jokes we made about Canada/Canadians are coming back to haunt us...It's pay back time! As they say in the game of chess..."it's check and mate."
Seriously...have not heard of any major environmental issues with the Alaskan Pipeline. If it is starting to leak, which would not be surprising given it's age, it is most likely repairable. So, that is a good test for the viability of this pipeline.
I think the migratory animals/birds did not have any major problems with the A.P. so, I think that concern can be laid to rest.
If the Administration let's this one get away...everyone...and I mean everyone, should be voted out of office...President,Congress the whole shebang. Our elected officials need to learn that they serve at the pleasure of the American people. And that means the "people of America"...not special interest groups, lobbyists or what have you.
FACT IS.. this article tells us what we already know.. The oil from alberta was goign to be sahipped down to texas for easy shipping out ot China.
Do we really want a giant pipeline running through the middle of our nation just so we can ship Canada's oil out to China ?
If you say yes, they you are not an American, your are the problem and you fall for all the ridiculous moves that far right wing extremist Taliban party is pushing for.
That was the only treason for making this pipeline. It was never going ot reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It was oil that was going to be sold at market prices to whomever bought it.
Just take the topic solely on a national safety note: I know that Canada wants to sell the oil to China and other countries (and that the oil is not solely intended for the US' consumption). With Iran and the Middle East looking more unstable, Iran is setting up alliances with Russia, the EU setting up embargos, Libyian pipeline and distribution looks in trouble, Brazil (our recent recipient of the first new Gulf drilling permits and the recipient of a few billion US taxdollars to build their oilfields) is jumping away from us to now give the same oil to China, Venezuela and others are actively setting up ways to avoid selling oil to the US, India setting up oil for gold program(no more US dollars needed), etc.
To me, with the global financial crisis, this is all setting up lines for a trade war and potentially a global war. Would you rather having the pipeline from the world's 3rd largest oil field running through the US (and have the option of stopping the output or using the output if a war errupts) or would you rather have to negotiate, barter, and beg to get our allies to stop selling oil to countries that wouldn't likely end up on our side in a war situation? How about begging to sell the same oilt to us and to set up a means to ship that oil to the US ASAP? I'd choose to have the infrustructure and capapcity available NOW and not have to scramble when the SHTF.
ISIS, could not have said that last paragraph better myself. And that is why this Canadian companies pipeline should never be built in the US. Whether the crap in the pipeline goes to Texas or BC it still goes directly to China. This is all about selling out Americans and taking of peoples property for the bidding of Canadian oil lobbyists. Our speaker of the house stands to make a ton of money if this thing gets built. If we are going to create jobs for two years as this pipeline would, I for one would rather have these same workers repair our own infrastructure, not building something UN-American for a foreign company to sell their oil to another foreign company.
Canada want's to build a pipeline to sell oil to China, fine - it's called capitalism.... and all the more reason for the US to take the lead for renewable energy. If it become the energy policy of this nation to make oil a "secondary energy source" look at all the new tech jobs that would be created.
We waste oil to heat homes, when solar and geothermal would be better, we waste oil to to power our vehicles, when they could be redesigned better.
1899 - Charles Duell as Commissioner of the US Patent Office stated that the US Patent Office was no longer needed as "Everything that can be invented has been invented"
Canada want's to build a pipeline to sell oil to China, fine - it's called capitalism.... and all the more reason for the US to take the lead for renewable energy...
So justoneguy, you are going to look at just one failure to shoot down our entire energy future? Whether you like it or not, oil will eventually run out. So would you rather have secondary sources of energy available before or after gas hits $10 a gallon. It will eventually happen.
Justoneguy - Wall Street and big oil waste more money in advertising to keep you "addicted to oil". They fight and delay anything that goes against "the sacred oil cow". The Solyndra investment failed, but who was at fault, the company for "cooking the books" the Dept of Energy for not auditing a private company, or as you believe a President for making a speech there. The investigation is still on going.
Because Solyndra was a failure, does that mean we're to give up on clean renewable energy? I don't think so, it just means we need better managers and ethics among corporations.
Fact - oil is not a renewable resource and will run out (known reserve / current demand = roughly 41 years)
Fact - new oil reserves are getting harder to find and smaller in size and costly to develop and produce. The "Green River" oil shale will be expense to develop and unsigthly.
Fact - the "tar sand oil" was never went for the US market, other wise why pump it 1,700 miles to a sea port when there are idle refineries closer?
So if Canada wants to sell the oil to China, isn't that what capitalism is all about?
We need to advance our country and become really energy secure and get off oil.
This isn't news. Canada stated long ago that if they couldn't get this pipe in that it was going to hang a left and head to BC where China will gladly come and get it. But that's OK , Barrys buddy Warren Buffet is laughing all the way to the bank as he owns the railroads that will haul the N. Dakota oil to Texas.
You care because you don't like the free market system?
Warren Buffet won his power fare and square. Plus he invests heavily in renewable energy sources and we all know the Saudi Prince owned Fox News hates that! They're oil people!
Wow! This really is a complex world we live in. Both sides can't make sense on this one. It is too complex, it is a lose/lose situation. Personally I wouldn't give you two Canadian pennies for Harper and his gang. Harper is a poor excuse for a leader.
If you really want to point fingers of blame you need to go back further than Bush. Clinton signed the repeal of Glass-Steagal which opened the door for the financial collapse. Then Clinton essentially fired Brooksly Born at the behest of Greenspan, Volker et al. Now you have Obama reappointed all the Clinton crooks. Sorry, it ain't all on Bush much as you want it to be.
Hmm one has to ask why they are running an extension of the 36" pipeline to the TAX FREE port at Freeport Texas were they can load Super Tankers offshore? And One has to wonder why over 400,000 barrels a day of gasoline and diesel made in AMERICAN refineries is being sent to foreign countries. YET we are asked to believe that building a pipeline from the WORLD's LARGEST STRIP MINE to Freeport , Texas is somehow PATRIOTIC and will benefit AMERICANS. Folks the whole point of running the pipeline fron Canada to Texas is to sell the Chinese and Japanese TAX FREE DIRTY CRUDE.
Plus we get the benefit of whatever toxic residue is left after refining that dirty oil. I am pretty sure that there is going to be a whole bunch of superfund quality muck left over from the refining process, and where better to put it than on the gulf coast where it can poison the gulf of mexico
Canada wants it, unions universally want it, (you know, the middle class you keep harping on about), a majority of Americans want it, but the fascist left needs to control everything so screw America right?
Refineries are run under EPA rules so if a clean up fund is required, it's on Obama's watch.
You both have no idea of what you are talking about. Do some research about the project before you just spew someone else's talking points. I have worked on this project as an Engineer and have wrote some articles on it also, check them out. This is a good thing for America it will put thousand to work on a project that will take about 3 to 5 years, so the jobs will be temporary just like any other construction job, but by then all of these people should be able to find work because by them our economy should be strong again. Obama is the worst president in the history of America. This dumb N1488r should go back to where he came from. He has done nothing to help Americans not even when he had both the House and the Senate for two years, now he wants to say it is the Rep in the House. He is a lier also it was his party that didn't get behind any of his ideas, that is why nothing was passed in the first two years. I now don't say that the passed health care because that was crammed down our throats and it has only accelerated the health insurance costs of Americans.
Canada wants it, unions universally want it, (you know, the middle class you keep harping on about), a majority of Americans want it, but the fascist left needs to control everything
Yo p111, why are you cons so ignorant. "fascist left"? How funny. They're extreme right wingers. You know, like your Neo Nazi brothern.
BTW---I haven't seen anything that shows the majority of us Americans want this pipeline. But then again I don't watch Faux Noise.
My question is if, like the cons want you to believe,we are soooo dependent on ME oil, why are we exporting more oil than we're importing? Shouldn't good old American oil stay in America to feed our addition?
-----------------------
Obama is the worst president in the history of America. This dumb N1488r should go back to where he came from.------
Yo bill. bush is by far the worst we've ever had. And thank you for your racial name calling. Obviously you aren't even close when it comes to intelligence. It's nice to see that as we get closer to the election we are seeing how many rascists reside on the right. Your true colors, no matter what you say, aren't RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. The truly ignorant, you included, are delusional. But hey, lean back in your LazyBoy, swill your beer, clutch your remote, and kill off what few brain cells you still have watching Lush and Glen.
BTWbill, the Dems only had total control of Congress for a year and we've seen what the party of NO has accomplished he last two sessions: nothing. But morons like you will keep voting for them, much to the detriment of this country.
NOW it's going to save the entire US economy? Why not the whole WORLD economy? I just don't buy it, nor do I buy you're a engineer of any sort. You're making up as you go along, but still using the same tired anti-Obama rhetoric that you and yours always do.
We are NOT exporting more oil than we are importing. Last year we exported more finished products like gasoline and diesel than we imported. The U.S. produces about 6 million barrels of oil per day, we import about 12 million barrels of oil per day.
ddogsdad, have you been up to the tarsands? Have you even been to Canada? Do you know the billions they spend on restoring the "strip mining" you are talking about? Are you aware that dirty crude is cleaner than oil from the middle east by the time it gets to the states?
Not building a pipeline to the U.S> will do nothing to stop the tarsand projects which have enough oil to run the world for centuries. Saskatchewan even has bigger reserves than Alberta, and it has just begun.
I don't know where the oil will go once it gets down to the states. I don't think its bad that Obama is being cautious (as long as it is not pandering). Nor do I hate environmentalists who can do some good in making sure every precaution is taken to ensure no tradgedies happen...but I think this pipeline will go through eventually.
Tarsands is like molasses. It does not flow naturally and needs to have hydrocarbons added. Estimates of greenhouse gas emissions are 2 to 4 times that of conventional oil and way more greenhouse gases in the total production refining up to 40%? more.
Wonderful how the low information folks like to call Obama a Fascist, socialist, communist, et al, (I've even heard a couple of geniuses use the term "socialist corporatist"...you can't make this stuff up) when it's pretty obvious they have no idea what any of those are. If you want to use big words and stuff, try doing a little research to find out just exactly what those terms actually mean. Geez.
Why is oil refined in the US being shipped to other countries? Because they bought it.
Why would building an oil pipeline create jobs? Because you need people to build the pipeline.
I disagree with building this oil pipeline, just like you do, but can you at least choose some rhetorical questions that do support your argument? For example, point to the environmental effects of building this pipeline. Or an increase of China's influence on our next-door neighbor.
You really have to wonder if this was ever intended to reduce America's reliance on oil from the middle east then why is it going to the refineries in Texas? I beleive there are refinaries that are a lot closer then Texas that they could route it to.
Who will benefit from this pipeline? Canadian and American oil companies and their share holders, including congressional Republicans? Yes. American and Canadians at the gas pumps? No. The American economy in the short term, no. American and Canadian economies in the long term? No.
This ALL about oil companies and markets and the potential for serious damage to both American and Canadian environments.
we don't call port aransas texas to mobile alabama cancer alley( it's not just at the mouth of the mississippi) for nothng...look it up... I guess we will have a little more refined down there destined for other countries.
pipeline or no pipeline- the oil and/or refined products will end up in China. What is at stake is who gets the profit? The oil cos along the Texas coast, who already export more than they import, and will export this as well seeing as how it would take a decade or more to increase the refining capacity to handle this supply. Not to mention the tax dollars we will spend to clean up any incidents.
you righties are nothing but lieing brainwashed idiots. first off bush is an idiot and did think the war was over. and bush did put us in all this s**t that Obama has been trying to get us out of with no help at all from the teapublicans. fact the pipeline is and will be an enviormental disaster just like fracking for natrual gas is but none of you righties will even admit or talk about. and Obama was the only one with the balls to tell BP that he wanted 20billion dollars to pay for the gulf oil spill and the teapubs said it was a slush fund and another scumbag teapublican had the balls to say that the U.S. was sorry and said it was extortion. and the scumbag teapublicans have used the threat of no middleclass tax cuts and no unemployment insurance extensions that the people and the economy really need right now. to extend the bush tax cuts and to try and drill in the gulf and alaska with the same blowout fitting that caused the BP oil spill, and stop anybody from overseeing the banks and wallstreet, and the way these scumbags have f@#$#$g disrespected this president like no one has ever done before not even any other countrys leaders have disrespected a sitting president the way these scumbags have and they should be striped of their pensions and kicked out of office. and the only thing the pipeline is going to f@#$#$g create is an envioromental disaster and some richer 1%ers and we`ll be stuck with the bill and the cleanup. WTF up america
Canada wants it, unions universally want it, (you know, the middle class you keep harping on about), a majority of Americans want it, but the fascist left needs to control everything so screw America right?
Refineries are run under EPA rules so if a clean up fund is required, it's on Obama's watch.
Apparently not ALL Canadians want it and definitely not all Americans wanted Keystone. If Canada wants to muck up it's beautiful enviroment that they've protected so long that's their business. But don't run your muck through our country. And don't try to work on the greed of the Republicans saying that now Canadians will have the jobs we could have. I live in TX and have met many oil workers........I don't think any of them are union workers. The Unions need to get on board with passing a jobs act to get OUR infrastructure updated. A win win situation for all of us.
For all of you pro oil people here's a link to an article about drilling in TX:
alboyano-First of all you are wrong about who got us here, it was in fact president Clinton that pushed the banks to lend the way they were lending. So it was not Bush that got us here, it was a Dem president. Now you say Obama has been trying to get us out of this mess, tell me how, was it by giving Solyndra $535 million of tax payers money and than they filed bankruptcy's even after the president was told this was not a sound investment. Or was it that even though he had the House and Senate for the first two years he got nothing passed and did not try to pass any jobs bill. Or is it that he keeps trying to blame the Rep for obstructing him when in fact he had both branches of government to do whatever he wanted in the first two years. You say the Rep apologized for America, when in fact that is all Obama has been doing since he took office. You need to do some research on your comments because not one of them is correct.
Bud you need to get your fact together I thin k, not once has this President ever gone over to a foreign country and apologized for anything this country has done. Please show me any clip of him giving any speech that this happened in, you can't because it has never happened. This mess we are in now is because of the total deregulationthat happened under the Bush administration. Banks being able to do what ever they want whenever they want has never worked well in this country through out the years. You want to talk about the President having control of the Senate and the House for the first 2 years, it is hard to get anything done when you have rules set up so just 1 senator can block anything from coming to the floor and he doesn't even have to be there, and the only way to get anything through is to have 60 votes. When you have 2 senators that are Democrats in name only and vote with the republicans on everything you don't get a lot done.
ddogsdad, you are absolutely right. Regardless of where that pipeline is in the USA, it is just a mode of transportation for foreign owned oil. THATS ALL. Yes, the oil would be refined here, but it is still owned by the Canadian company.
The people who will make money converting this oil will be the people who refine it here. Maybe the people who will be hired to build, repair and watch over this pipeline, excavation companies to make the path possible. There truck drivers, etc, and every company along the way. The motels and restaurants in areas of construction will also benefit. The towns along the way, will make some money. But exactly how much money is OUR water supply worth to everyone? Is it worth the SHORT TERM success of building this pipeline? Its going to be a boom until its done, then what?
Once its done, its a done deal. There will be no going back. I believe it is something to be weighed in on by an independent company who has NOTHING at stake with any of the companies, or locations involved. a REAL report.
Truthful information. Its necessary to make an educated decision. Not statements that are hearsay, inflated, over exaggerate, glorified propaganda spewed from the mouths of POLITICIANS looking for a hand out from corporations and a vote from the suckers in his/her district.
Also, here is a article explaining the policies of Bill Clinton that are the biggies contributing factor. His deregulation of the housing market because the poor could not afford the down payment or the closing costs, so he made it so that you could buy a house with no money down and no closing costs.
So don't tell me I am wrong when in fact it is you that is wrong. It would be nice if the Dem could take responsibility for this mess along with the Rep it is not one sided as you would want us to believe.
President Bam-Bam does not want oil pipeline and jobs just yet. He and the Unions need to get better control of the country first. If we become a third world country then he and his socialist friends can completely take over and then it will be freedom lost forever for the average American. He speaks of exports but with unions controling the cost of labor no other country can afford to buy our products. Holder says he will have people at voting places if needed to assure us of freedom in voting. Am sure he and Bam-Bam will but they will be SEIU and Black Panthers doing the watching.
Man, you really are ignorant. Oh, wait, you must be a republican. I mean you sound like a crazy conspiracy person. You know one of the people who wear tin foil hats and think people are watching them all the time. The sad thing is people like you vote. The further dumbing down of the American Electorate.
@ Sandy, no, the sad thing is people like you vote. The final blame for loss of the pipeline is at the feet of Obama. Like it or not, Canada has a right to exploit this resource and sell the oil to whoever wants it.
Sandy, come on now. Obama is all about politics as is his decision on this pipeline. Why would he wait? I mean, its a pipe that creates jobs and gives America another line of home-grown energy. It's a pipe! The ecological issues are very maintainable. As a business owner I would call this a win-win. However, for Obama it's just another tool to attempt to win votes.
Didn't the citizens of Nebraska say Hell no move the pipeline East? I thought they called a halt to the location/route of the line. If I am wrong please let me know.
Keystone has a pipeline from Canada to the Gulf cost. They want to increase the capacity of this line and take a short cut across Nebraska.
If the water source of the mid west needs protected and I suspect Not then we should relocate the route of the line farther East. Ruptures in pipelines are NOT A BIG DEAL. They have automatic shut offs along the lines and the pumping stations can be used a control points. It is not a big deal to control the flow of oil thru a pipeline system.
The world has a vast amount of experience controlling oil pipe line flow.
GOP rules, and thank God for them, I am too am from Missouri and we want the Keystone Project to go ahead, and by the way Missouri did not go to Obama in 2008 and guess what we will NOT let him win Missouri in 2012 either, Obama is the worst thing that has ever happened to America, and in 2012 we will kick Obama out FAST & FURIOUSLY, Bless the sane Missourians.
I mean, its a pipe that creates jobs and gives America another line of home-grown energy.
It creates a few short term American jobs, more Canadian jobs and does very little for the American home-energy markets. It also supports a major source of oil pollution for both Canadians and Americans. Do you people who support this not read and just watch Fox? Do you not not know who Harper is or what the policies of his right wing government are? Do you have any idea of whether most Canadians or Americans for that matter support this pipeline? Apparently not.
More like an Epic WIN for everyone in the path of that pipeline. It takes a smart and courageous person to stand up for what is best for people in that area of the country.
Yet another thread for ignorant republicans and democrats to use my balls are bigger than yours analogy. If the pipelines can be proven safe, maybe an option can be made with the route being away from neighborhoods, major waterways, etc. Doesn't have to be a straight line method. If this can allow the US to become less dependent on terrorist country oil and strengthen the economy and add more jobs at home, etc., it is something to think about. I feel the administration, EPA, local agencies; i.e. states, counties, cities should consider all the negatives and positives beofre approving/disapproving this project. It will take a lot of steps with EPCRA Emergency Planning Community Right to know Act, local, state and US gov't before this is ever a possibility.
Jeff Brady, You provide a voice of reason in a sea of chaos led by political division of many and misplaced loyalty by far more. You propose legitimate questions that must be addressed before a decision is reached on a project of this scope.
Honest answers will never be found by tuning into the talking heads of FOX or MSNBC. Honest answers will never be found by listening to the lies of politicians long bought and paid for by corporate interests. Honest answers will certainly never come from the spokesmen for these corporations.
Thankfully, honest answers are readily available at our fingertips (in this information age) to all that care to seriously consider the source and accuracy of such information. As with any crucial decision, we must do this with an open mind free of partisan persuasion or outside interference.
Only then, can we intelligently discuss the true facts of the case and then dutifully support the powers that be who reach the proper conclusion.
Please. Obama delayed the pipeline for reasons that are 10% environmental and 90% because the Republicans wanted it.
After a respectable delay, there can be a Democrat proposed bill to build the pipeline which will be quickly approved - the crown jewel of the second Obama term.
O'Bama is just doing like he has always done - lying ouot of both siddes of his face!!! O'Bama is just doing whatever it takes to get votes and he will sacrifice the U.S. Economy to get that vote. O'Bama has to go before he completely destrroys the U.S. and its taxpayers (which according to the Feds. is around 40% of the Legal U.S. Citizens.
stclaire-3822173 - You think? I think I can start personally thanking Obama's Re-election committee now:
All - In the backpocket of major lobbyists, corporations, and PAC groups with the biggest checkbook. Oh and they were silent when an American Veteran was boo'd during a republican debate because he was gay.
Mittens - Self Made Millionaire that enjoys firing people, hiding his money, not paying his fair share of taxes, but pretends to be a man for the middle class.
GingRICH - Denial on his ethics violations, not supported by the republican leadership (oxymoron really, because there is no leadership in the entire party), a man with no family values but preaches the Christian faith...
Santorum - A backwards and bigot individual who only has special rights that only apply to him and no one else.
Paul - I have some really good ideas, they would have worked well in 1896.
Football guy as a name says it all. First, Nebraska asked for the line to be blocked from going through it. Second, read the post directly above yours. Third, Why not build a refinery closer to the Canadian border and avoid the possible environmental disasters traveling 2000 miles could develope? Fourth, Alternative sources of engery can and should be explored with the cost of the pipeline.
Right wing garbage. there is nothing wrong with doing this right and that oil is going to China whether it leaves texas or the port they are going to build. You people on the right are such fools it is beyond funny. beating up on Obama one of our best presidents every snce he took office makes our enemies laugh at you. If of course you are not one of them any way.
You are correct the problem here is that the Republicans wanted to force a Yes or No answer from the President before the study was completed and turned in.
I dont think its a fail. I think it was the right thing regardless if it wasent in best interest for the people. Are we willing to destroy our lands and oceans just for jobs? just to make money? Its wrong. There is money to be made without destroying what we are suppose to be guarding.
The US wont make a penny off of this pipeline and it wont save us any money at the gas pump either. Piping it all the way to the Gulf serves only one purpose, so they can ship it to the rest of the world, not back to the US. If they intended to sell this oil to the US they would simply build the pipeline to the Great Lakes and ship it from there to the east coast, saving 2000 miles of pipe and a lot of time and money. On top of that this will only create about 2,000 jobs at most, and those jobs will only last as long as the pipe is being built, then it will drop to about 100 welding and control room jobs to maintain it.
This is not the solution to our economic problems, and if this pipe breaks over the Ogallala Aquifer we're going to be in massive amounts of trouble for decades to come, huge crop failures and water shortages.
Football guy, grow up...really. The Keystone line was delayed because Nebraska asked for it via their republican governor. He asked out of safety fears because if there's a spill the aquifer which provides irrigation to western Nebraska crops as well as those in Kansas, etc could kill those crops. This is the breadbasket of the country. Go look at it in July and see what's going on there. Without that water, millions of acres are barren. We EAT food from there. We can't eat oil. It's really that simple. The line will be built, hopefully with better oversight than was provided in the gulf by BP. You can read about it. REALLY ! All of it is available. It's really quite simple. VERY, Very simple. That's all he's asking for. Really...that's it.
Problem, the only regulations TransCanada wants to use when building pipelines are the looser Canadian regulations even when building in the U.S. nor do they feel they should be required to use U.S. licensed engineers for the U.S. portions or any equipment they use. The last pipeline they built in Kansas and Oklahoma is still unused because the pipe they supplied did not meet the strength required by the U.S. for safety and tried to hide the fact by burying it before testing which failed.
TransCanada is the company wanting to put in the Keystone XL. As for the pipeline in Alaska and the feeder lines to it, things were better when Arco was part owner. The Arco feeder lines were maintained and tested more often than the BP lines but when BP bought Arco, the Arco feeder lines had their maintainence and testing reduced to cut expenses.
its all RP BS.
1 first like other op they wanted a yes or no ancer with out a good time to study.what were they not wanting the people to find out?
2 as you rp talking heads say they are not perment jobs but only temp. line built jobs go away so what good is that as you all pointed out a buch of times.
3 did you all not see what this is all about????[Alberta oil sands to the Pacific in order to deliver oil to Asia, chiefly energy-hungry China.] the oil will be refined and loaded on to tankers it is not for the usa exuses me but f china
hey StClaire-3822173 i`ll bet you still beleave in santa clause, tooth ferry, and the easter bunny. good luck with that one in 2012 and ( if your voting democrat) please remember to bring an ID state or Fed., a birth cert., a resent bill with your name & address on it, your mothers maiden name and where she was born and her mothers maiden name and place of birth, where you were born and what year day and time it happened, the doctors name address and telephone #, and how it was paid for, a copy of the paper it was announced in and who wrote the story and how much he was paid, a high school deploma or GED, proof of what color you are and a letter stating weather your get food stamps or not, a resent pay stub if you make under $100,000, 3 people that know you (for no less then 20yrs no family members will be excepted), and any child under 10yrs of age to help cleanup afterwards no exceptions)and if you belong to a (union you will not be permited to vote) (unless voting teapublican no exceptions) and no bibles or guns (unless voting teapublican) P.S. this is only for the protection against voter fraud and has been aproved by and for the TPGOP.
This is just more BS from the Reich-wingers. That "Tar-sand oil" was never going to be used in the US. The pipeline was to go directly from Canada to refineries in Texas which produce oil for EXPORT - so the Chinese were going to get it anyway, not anyone in the US. The US would have gotten a piece of the action only through production costs, but it was still Canadian Oil, sold on a WORLD market.
The risk of a spill (like what happens a lot in Alaska) was just too great to warrant the building of the pipeline (costs benefit showed that - look at what the GAO said about it). While Obama is far from being the President I would like this country to have, he wasn't wrong on this one (rare for him, I know). I humbly suggest people read the studies done before posting here - it isn't Faux News' forum where mindless opinion is more important than fact.
Don't you mean another "fail" for that motor mouth Gingrich? Rethuglicans' best pals are the oil companies, so of course he's going to run his pie hole on anything having to do with Big Oil and the destructive impact they have on the natural environment. Same applies to Romney.
These Canadian @$$ hats are the cause of their own problem. Refusing to reroute a small portion of the pipeline around an aquifer that supplies water to 4 states. They stand to make billions yet refuse to do a small redesign for safety reasons. The greed of these oil companies is ridiculous.
David Suzuki has a worthless opinion. He's famous for not being famous for a long time. Let's take the money. It worked for the Saudis. If we don't it's going to be stolen.
Let me guess, OPEC has lobbyist on K Street paying off American Flag pin wearing poli@!$%#ians to sell out America. Congress has a 10% approval rating, yet 90% of them will get voted back into office. Good work American voters, keep cutting your own throats.
We Americans are working on our obesity problem. Most of our children are fat and won't do anything. We are taking the approach that if we let all the other countries in the world drill for and pump all our oil and use it and if we let them buy all the oil available for sale by other countries then our children will have to walk to where ever they go and manually do all the work necessary to farm and grow crops for food. These anti oil actions will again allow our children be the trim muscular examples we want them to be. Gone will be the days of lounging around the Iphones and computer games. Gone will be the texting and tv watching. Gone will be the vacationing and traveling to remote places just for the fun of it. Gone will be the nightly light polution of our nation. Truly we will be back to nature with wolves snapping at our rear ends. Won't that be fun? Finally the return to nature will be achieved. Finally the animal eat people earth will be restored. Well at least here in the USA it will be. Wait what are those dots in the sky coming in from the west? OOPS It seems we have forgotten about China. Surely those are not airplanes full of bombs are they? Surely they won't drop them on this great natural habitat will they? Surely they won't will they?
Critics, however, dislike the whole concept of tapping the oil sands, saying it requires huge amounts of energy and water, increases greenhouse gas emissions and threatens rivers and forests. Some projects are massive open-pit mines, and the process of separating oil from sand can generate lake-sized pools of toxic sludge.
Yeah, drill drill drill... as long as it is not in my own back yard !
Oil sand is destroying the environment big time and it takes a lots of water and ennergy to extract it. This is a very bad idea.
What kind of planet are we going to leave the children ?? They are going to hate us, believe me.
Oil companies are criminals ! they hold back brevets on energies that could save our environment and climat but won't release them until all the oil is gone. Cars can run on water and the guy that found about this was murdered, so you see how oil companies are criminals !
I support President Obama and any president that will do all it can to save our environment. We can live without oil but you will die in a poisonned environment, no doubt !
Blah, blah, blah, get off your high horse, STOP USING Electrictiy, Oil Based Plastics, clean drinking water pumped by electricity, computers, smart phones, internet, etc..
Come here (Afghanistan) and Go live like an Afghan.
Your failed Academic Idealism does not work in the Real World Life or Death School of Hard Knocks.
Those oil sands are going to be developed no matter if there is a pipeline to Texas or not. The only difference is, does the oil go to China or does it go to the US. Pipelines criss cross this country already, this is just a bunch of environmental whining, the chance of a pipeline rupture and a big spill are pretty remote. Blocking that pipeline is going to bite us on the ass.
Hey, the TP/Republicans do not care how we leave the earth to our children, only that the debt is not high. No clean water to drink, TP/Rep don't care; no clean air, nope, don't care there either, etc.
I do not think that the middle class/poor Republicans have any idea that the Keystone pipeline will not create jobs for the American workers, except for a few thousand parttime workers until the line is built. The oil will be refined in Texas , but then shipped out to other world markets. The oil will not be kept be kept in the United States for our use.
That's a pathetic lie. It is democrats that will leave future generations with crushing debt, enslaved to countries like China.
Oil is a world wide commodity it doesn't matter who it is sold to. The bottom line is we will get jobs, revenue, and taxes from the pipeline and refineries, and should the middle east erupt, we will have ready access to friendly suppliers.
Really, if you have to lie to make a point do you really have a point to make?
p111 - how much oil do you think we bring in from the Middle East? You seem to think you know everything, so please tell us.
As far as crushing debt, do you know where a huge chunk of that debt came from? Could it be Bush's wars? You know, the ones where he hid the costs? The ones that Obama was honest enough to put on the books so you right-wingers could blame him for that debt? Perhaps that's the "point" you are making, right? That you folks are really good at pointing fingers, really poor at accepting when you mess up.
I can't understand why we should believe Obama.... too many lies, too many failed promises! He may be a nice guy, but hasn't proved to me to be an adequate leader. This keystone issue is just one example!
Terry-753375.....A lot of the oil will go to China anyway, did you think they were shipping it to Texas to store it for US only use ?
Oil is a world commodity, all countries use it, and we sell oil to other countries now. No matter what happens wit the pipeline, China will buy oil from Canada and from other places in the world. That's just the way world markets work.
Don`t you idiots get it the US is not going to use any of that oil its to dirty to use here and there will only be a few jobs created and alot of 1%ers alot richer you dumbasses just don`t get it what a waste of brain matter.
"...this is just a bunch of environmental whining, the chance of a pipeline rupture and a big spill are pretty remote."
The same thing was said about Horizon, nuclear (Three Mile, Japan, Russia), Valdez, etc., etc., etc.
None of those incidents you mentioned there were pipelines. There have been no big pipeline spills in the US. There have been small ones, but none with large environmental impacts. None in Alaska either and that pipeline runs hundreds of miles through the Alaskan wilderness.
vwterry, the same could be said for intestinal gas leaks. You are right, the degree of environmental impact is debatable but not deniable. There have been virtually no major environmental impact with the Alaska pipeline.
The spills are not limited to just the Alaska pipeline. These are all across the country. Impact of these spills vary by degree but to insinuate that a spill of over 800,000 gallons in Mich., for instance, did not cause a major environmental crisis is just insane.
Typical right wing moronic retort. Kind of like when we were kids with "I know you are but what am I?" Come back when you have something intelligent to add.
BILLINGS, Mont. -- Exxon Mobil says 1,509 barrels of oil spilled into the Yellowstone River during a pipeline break in Montana last summer – an increase of more than 500 barrels over the company's earlier estimates.
Spokesman Alan Jeffers said Thursday the company recalculated the volume after discovering the pipeline was completely severed during the July 1 accident near Laurel.
Jeffers says pipeline breaches typically involve a crack or fissure. That was the assumption used to craft the initial estimate.
The company has estimated costs related to the spill of $135 million.
More than 1,000 Exxon Mobil contractors were involved in the cleanup effort. Only about 10 barrels of crude were recovered – less than 1 percent of the total spilled.
I seem to have more of a Problem with China owning a stake in the Keystone Pipeline, It is Funny the Republican didn't mention this, And if this pipeline can not be made safe sorry I am not going to support it, Sorry for this People but safe drinking water and food trump a oil pipeline and both are at risk with the current route of the pipeline, I am sure it will be built in time, but rather see it built safe without the greed of the Politician.
Better China spending some of our money here than not, or would you rather they spend our money in Iran? At least we're getting some of it back. It's better than Obama losing $500,000,000 of taxpayer money to Solyndra with absolutely nothing to show for it.
And who said it couldn't be made safe? Thre are pipelines all over this country, one more won't make a difference.
When the article said "state-controlled Sinopec (China) has a stake in the pipeline" it was speaking of the Northern Gateway Pipeline, not the Keystone.
It make sense that they would invest to facilitate a path for the oil to reach Asia by a shorter route - that is in their national interest.
Even so, the Chinese invest their money in everything on the capital market. If there are bonds sold to build either of these pipelines, or to build a school, library, sewer plant, highway or whatever in Anytown, USA - there is Chinese money (surplus US dollars) available to invest in those things also.
Scott 2113140 I see you would rather see it built by a Comunist dictator that has no greed or desire to become wealthy at the cost of his people. What insite you have what intelligence. Three cheers for communist dictators. Is that what you're saying? They are much better and less greedy than politicians? Is that what you're saying?
"I think what's happened around the Keystone is a wake-up call, the degree to which we are dependent or possibly held hostage to decisions in the United States, and especially decisions that may be made for very bad political reasons,"
Nooooo..... Say it ain't so.
President Obama making a decision for political reasons?
I agree with you %100 we should NEVER sacrifice US citizens health for Canadian profits
And I might add, the Canadians were focused on SELLING the majority of oil to China anyway, that was the plan ...it would be American workers working which is great, but the majority of oil in PLAN A this first plan would be sold to other countries.
President Obama did the right thing on this particular plan: No environmental
distructiion of the USA and also we were not going to benefit from oil as much as
Another simplistic statement from Toasty...This keystone issue is just one more example of ineptitude from the community organizer sitting in the Oval Office!
What can you expect from someone whose whole philosophy of economics can be summed up with this:
"I won't allow half of Americans who pay no taxes to bear the burdon of the other half who aren't paying their share!"
A Canadian company is building the pipe line to Texas or the Pacific. The Canadian company will hire CANADIANS,NOT AMERICANS. For you to say we are losing jobs is pure bull excrement. Canadians never hire non canadians unless there is a shortage of Canadians. If we did the same we wouldn't be where we are today,BROKE and in the RED.
Mr Gingrich may i ask ,how much that contribution check was from Keystone Pipeline or affiliates?
The pipe supplier is an American company that has had to have drastic layoffs due to the delay. If they build the pipeline in Canada we will get ZERO revenue from it.
If you substitute our American president with the Canadian Prime minister it won't be dangerous but will be a drastic improvement from the socialistic communist leaning disaster whe have now.
TRANSCANADA IS STOCKPILING FOREIGN-MADE KEYSTONE XL PIPE IN UNITED STATES
“Truckloads of pipe from Canada are arriving daily in Gascoyne, ND where they are being stockpiled,” Radio-Canada reported Monday. TransCanada refused to name the companies producing the pipe, raising concerns the sections may have been manufactured in China or India. “It’s unbelievable to me that industry would be lining this up already,” Canadian politician Megan Leslie said. “They’re saying ‘come on board and support this project, you have a say in this,’ and meanwhile they’re stockpiling pipes. It makes me feel like the die is cast.”
I would rather drive a buggy and live in a pristine environment because if you have a little intellect and common sense, you should know that once ground water and land are polluted, you won't survive ! It is not your dollar bills that will save you ! NO one can survive in a polluted environment, ask Nigerians ! Their country is polluted beyond repair and they are dying young! All life is gone there. Is it what you want ?
And yet, you uninformed academic idealists do not say anything about the Natural Gas extraction from the depleted US Oil Wells (the Oil Corporations pushing Natural Gas to get ever cent they invested in Oil Wells), the toxic chemical Fracking Process going Directly into the ground Drinking Water.
And you will be the uninformed that do not know that Natural Gas is toxic Methane that is more damaging to the Enivronment than CO2.
Then you will start up with proof that you are uninformed about the Electric Car crap, where the f**k do you think the electricity is coming from.
Why aren't you b!tching about President Obama's giving US Taxpayer money to the Coal Industry, with the Coal Industry dumping toxic poisonous wastes as millions of tons of Coal Ash into Coal Ash Ponds, Lakes, etc. that have leaked and destroyed hundreds of acres of land (prime farm land), contaminated drinking water, etc. for decades.
It was idiot liberals that forced MTBE down our throats to clean up exhaust. The only problem was it DID pollute ground water and is highly carcinogenic. It took a conservative radio station to sound the alarm and have it eliminated.
MTBE was chosen by the oil industry. Democrats wanted clean air in cities and an oxygenate was the best way. The Republicans said let the industry decide which oxygenate to use and they picked the cheapest one, with NO review by the EPA.
Poodlefan, you are a fool. What's going to pull your buggy, magic? Horses are not magical creatures. They have significant resource needs and produce waste - both at levels that are measured in pounds per day. A horse consumes approximately 2% of its weight every day - that's some 20 pounds of hay for an average-sized riding horse (weighing between 1,000-1,200 pounds), and much more for draft horses suitable for pulling heavy loads. (The Budweiser Clydesdales weigh at least 1,800 pounds.) That average-sized horse requires a minimum of around 10 gallons per water a day, twice that or more if it's hot and/or under heavy use. On the other end, every day, they produce around 30 pounds of manure and 2+ gallons of urine, depending on consumption and other factors. Every day - even if you don't ride or drive them. Every single day, per horse. Now, multiply that for all the horses needed in a large city. For instance, there were over a hundred thousand horses in New York City around 1900. Horses also die on the job. One can find a reference to 15,000 horses being removed from the streets of New York City in 1880 alone.Think about how "pristine" those streets were, covered daily by two or three million pounds of manure, and a couple hundred thousand gallons of urine, and any number of rotting horse carcasses. In case you're having trouble picturing it, here's a photo someone took a hundred years ago or so:
You think there might possibly be a bit of contamination involved, just maybe?
Now, think about what it took to produce feed. In addition to the massive amount of water required for all these horses to drink, hay requires water to grow, and energy to cultivate, harvest and transport to where people can buy it for their animals. Horses also require good hay - ruminants can live on lousy forage, but not horses.
I don't dislike horses - I own one. But I know something about the demands of horsekeeping, and I'm guessing that since you think driving a buggy is "green" you don't.
NMAZ - I too owned horses at least their manure can grow something - mushrooms - cantalopes and all kinds of veggies - this sludge grows nothing and is toxic waste material
Hell, we can't get rid of our nuclear waste - try burying this stuff - wait Nevada here we come- more poison for your citizens
I hear my earth crying - no more!
P.S A 1,200 lb horse eats 25 lbs of hay a day, plus sweet feed
i couldn`t agree with you any more the problem is you have a brainwashed idiot party that thinks you can because they said you can. and we all know that the teapublicans and a few democrats would never put our envioroment or health in danger i mean god if they say its safe its safe the teapublican never lie. if they ( foxnews or the teapubs) say it then it must be truth right teapublicans
I would wager you wouldn't last three months in a pristine enviornment. Especially on your own. Few modern day people would. If you would like to try I would be glad to drop you off in the Cascade Mountians or deep in the Rocky Mountians of Canada so we could really tell.
Obama does not tell the truth ever. He was in Arizona and lied. Only reason was political. Arizona does not have the educated people to occupy Intel. The ex CEO has so stated and the only reason Intel is building, is that they own the land. Why would he not tell the truth about the pipe line. Personal gain, nothing more.
learn the facts first before you run your mouth, oh thats right you righties never check for facts you just say what ever the right says cus they said it so it must be truth. oh thats right you anwsered your own question with arizona doesn`t have the educated people to check for facts they can`t lead they just follow like the rest of your brainwashed party right!
I thought you were going off to live in a pristine environment without all the oil supplied amenities and prove to us you could do it? Where is all you bluster? You couldn't do it and you know it.
Hey right wingers, the problem with you is that you're not smart enough to have a vision of the future ! as we say in french, you do not see farther than you own nose !
President Obama has young children and he wants a future for his children, don't you ??
Time may will come where we will have to live like the amish, so what is so wrong with that ??? Yes that will bring some inconvenient but so what, we will eventually adapt !
Here is the problem Poodle face. You would be allowed to live with the Amish right now if you adapt to their religion and way of life so what is stopping you? What you want to do like all Liberal Progressive Socialists is to dictate to all the rest of us how we should live. Stay out of my life and go live with the Amish if you must just don't try to make me go with you.
Set an example for all of us and rid yourself of all products and materials that come from oil and gas reserves and let us see how much better it is for you. Then maybe we will be persuaded. Put your possessions where your mouth is and show us the way. This should be at least a five year commitment on your part so we would see the true impact in your life and how much better off you are. Assuming of course that you actually live that long without doctors and medicine.
Alaskan oil used to have to come to the U.S. until Republicans repealed that provision in 1995. You can bet the law will be written by Republicans NOT to require any of the XL refined product to be kept in the U.S.
Even if a Canadian company builds the pipeline, they CAN NOT hire Canadians to work on American soil if there are qualified Americans available to do the job. It's how your country(and mine) try to take care of their own citizens first. The only Canadians that would be employed would probably be a few engineers on temporary work visas, all the labour(skilled and grunt)would be done by American citizens.
You have that almost right, they can not hire Americans to work in CANADA. If they ever build a pipeline from the north slope of Alaska to the lower 48 Canadians will be building the vast majority of it.
hey idiots its ( the oil) to dirty read my lips its to dirty to use here it will go over seas get it and the jobs won`t amount to s**t just another teapublican BS lie to help win the presidents job back and then set us back about 50yrs so good luck with that one in 2012
Porter - I know this is probably a stupid question , but China is a large country have they no deposits of oil or natural gas? And look at the countries they border - nada?
It makes absolutely no difference with regard to U.S. fuel supplies if Canada ships oil directly to China. If the Keystone pipeline had gone through, the refined products were targeted for foreign sales (e.g. China) anyway. Any new jobs would have been temporary and we would have been stuck with higher fuel prices and the resulting pollution from oil spills (yes, every pipeline leaks). Read it again... We would have been stuck with higher fuel prices because our refinery capacity is maxed out, and some of that limited output would have been shifted from US sales to foreign sales leaving the US with smaller supplies of refined fuel (i.e. higher fuel prices).
david-475776 - I agree, yes, you are living proof of the Failed US Education System (your own words and poor grammar). You apparently couldn't read or comprehend what was written.
Crude oil and refined products are internationally-traded commodities - the overall price depends on supply, demand, taxes, and subsidies in any particular market. If this oil or its' refined products are shipped to China (by Northern Gateway or by Keystone), then there will be less Chinese demand to consume the other global sources. This would reduce price pressure.
By the way, if it is to be consumed in China, the Northern Gateway would be a much more efficient transport path. It is a long way from Texas to China. Depending on the loss during refining (which I think is relatively high for this heavy crude) it might be most efficient to refine it in Canada, near the production areas, and ship the refined products by pipeline, rail, tanker, barge, or whatever. How about a Trans-Pacific undersea pipeline? The Chinese probably have the funds to do it.
@mailman8... I applaud your post, you hit the nail on the head... perhaps you could open a school and teach right wingers how to use their brain... all the facts and none of the B.S... you are wise beyond your years... Thank you
ROFL. It takes a certain type of far-right brainwashing for a person to think that Obama is the Big Business president, and the republicans so anything but toe the corporate line every time.
There are environmental concerns for both Canada and the US----it makes sense to debate the risks in detail before anyone goes running in like a "bull in a china shop." But that doesn't mean that it is dead!!!-----------lets look at the pro's and con's.
It was studied for years before it got to this stage. This is only a political move on Obama's part. He had to piss off unions or enivro-nazi's so he chose to punt until after the election.
p111, you are correct, Obama's decision to delay the inevitable, is just a political ploy to hoodwink the uneducated liberals into voting for his disastrous administration once again. God help us, if he is re-elected.
So to GOP wants a pipe line, I think it's asking for trouble but I see it this way, first the oil companies would have to be held lible for any leaks, cleanup and no Goverment help of any kind, second, all oil from this line entering the us stays in the us, no offsetting of imports. no increasing of exports, bottom line we the people get a break for a change. This of coarse isn't going to happen, the BS of oil independence is a joke, this line is ment to do nothing but add to the oil companie's bottom line. why isn't it going to refineries in the mid west, lots closer right, it's going to the texas coast so it can be sold on the open market, ooops there goes oil independence slipping thru our fingers again. of coarse Beohner will do the koch brs bidding again and push a bill, he needs slapped silly for screwing the American People this way.
I agree with boba: Why do we need to build the pipeline ALL the way to TX refineries and ports? Stop it at the midwest and let it be processed and shipped from their to central parts of the USA. Sending it all the way to the gulf port refineries just screams EXPORT and will do nothing to help USA. Obama is right to stop this scam in it's tracks. We should ship oil or jobs over seas....
If you knew anything about the oil industry, Libradad, you'd know that the only refineries in the US equipped to handle heavy oil are on the Gulf Coast. They've been refining oil imported from Hugo Chavez's communist dictatorship in Venezuela. It would be a very good thing to spit in that Commie's face and tell him we no longer need his oil. The few refineries in the Midwest are all set up to refine light Illinois Basin oil. They are totally unsuited to handling heavy oil.

You really think we will get to see any of that oil? so far from everything i have read it never talks about oil production for the US increasing?? Its going to cost 7,000,000,000 to build the pipe... how much will it take to build a heavy oil refinery next to the Canadian border?? half a billion a billion? Why build it all the way to the Gulf? please explain??? i think the government can provide all the permits necessary to build it this year.
John Carter - I believe Washington State has four refineries - it isn't the refineries that is the problem it's the money "Texas is Tax Free" - Holy Smokes look at that!
If the EPA would grant permits for new refineries in Nebraska to handle heavy crude, that would certainly be a wonder. They haven't allowed any new refinery to be built in the US in the last 30 years. Today, the only refineries in the US that can handle heavy crude are on the Gulf coast. All of the product delivery pipelines for the eastern half of the US originate on the Gulf too. The Gulf refineries feed those pipelines with refined gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. There aren't any product pipelines coming out of the small Midwest refineries (which are set up to handle light Illinois Basin Oil, not the heavy Canadian oil). They have to truck their product out, a far more expensive and vulnerable method of delivery, suitable only for low volumes. If the EPA were to allow new heavy oil refineries in Nebraska, then a new network of product delivery pipelines would have to be built to move the product to market. Frankly, that would be a stupid move, costing far more than a single crude pipeline to the Gulf.
Well this is just great. At a time when the US needs jobs & revenue like never before, our politicians have once again decided they know what's better for us than we do. Bickering like school kids & trying to blame each other on the failure instead of doing the job they we ALL voted on to do. I WILL remember this in November!!!
To weigh the risks beforehand is the mark of intelligence-----and is something that both Canada and the US need to do------laying a pipeline to the Gulf coast sounds good but also the safeguards necessary for a safe environment is also sensible planning. Lets take a little time to iron out the deatils!!
He did, he stated that Obama should be impeached, I second that. Obama is a liar and a failure, and no amount of talk will change it, you and Obama must be very proud of America's first down grade in history, I was hoping that Obama would stay close to his voting record in the Senate, after all 98 percent of his votes were present, he simply could not make a decision and America can see that his record has stayed the same, but very soon America will go to the polls and kick Obama out
@stclaire...But he DID make a decision and that was not to be rushed into an environmentally questionable action by Republicans looking to score political points. Furthermore the downgrade is squarely on the back of the GOP and no amount of talk will change that. You should be careful of making predictions you will probably have to eat like crow after the election. Obama's looking pretty strong right now especially considering the rabble he's running against. Better pick up a bottle of hot sauce to go with that crow.
Chuck - I'll agree with you if you arrest Bush JR and Cheney for High Treason and put forward before the Geneva Convention for violations of the Geneva Convention until then I can only say stuff it!
Settle down you folks. If the go ahead happens with the pipeline which it should and it could be placed along land that will not interfere with the environment (very easily) with the technology we have today.
I'm sure an agreement can be made with Keystone to employ a lot of Americans along with Canadians. It's not President Obama's call it's the peoples call about the pipeline so if the people are educated as to how it can all happen properly, everyone would be happy.
If we continue to ignore what we have in our own countries the only alternative is to continue dealing with corrupt middle eastern people and terrorists.
Yes, if America fails with the pipeline installation then by all means Canada can deal with the Chinese but why not deal with both to increase our strength globally.
Having been a Canadian citizen (presently an American citizen) I would hope that there are enough level headed politicians in both camps that will debate this thing intelligently for the benefit of both countries-----and not listen to the "shoot from the hip" extremists!!
Intelligently....that is the hangup. Tree huggers have none of that. Build the pipeline, it just another pipeline, just like ther thousands of miles of other pipelines that cross our country. Even if we don't have to use the oil right now, it would be much better to have the crude available here in this country, and decrease the chances of a shortage caused by some middle eastern flareup.
Hey, thanks a lot, OBAMA. FAIL!!!!
By your logic, China is in control of the Dem party, since they want the oil shipped to their ports, which the dems are actively advocating for.
Uncle
The Keystone pipeline would go right through the Nebraska Sand Hills - which supplies water to the Ogallala aquifer, a critical water resource for much of the midwest. ( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2011/11/nebraska-keystone-xl-pipeline-ranchers.html ). This is the kind of short-sighted thinking that will get Harper kicked out of office in the next Canadian election. ( http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/01/20/stephen-harper-bob-rae-poll_n_1217525.html )
The real solution for America can be found in this fact from the article:
China is drowning in their own poison. We shouldn't let Oil Company money and Tea Party thinking do the same to America. We should move forward in finding ways to grow our economy without sucking all of the oil from the Earth. (Something President Obama is a leader in supporting.)
It would be a shame if Canada allowed this pipeline to poison their own environment, but it would actually be a positive thing for America. From the article:
Obama did the wrong thing, and Republicans will fix his mistakes when they take control of the White House in 2012, Obama is an epic failure.
Question for the righties.
Maybe Hillary Clinton could leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent. I would vote for her in a New York minute.
Why are Republicans choosing to support a Canadian company instead of supporting businesses in the US?
if there is so much oil, why are we paying 3 bucks a gallon for it?
Of course they are also wondering why our government can't execute anyone they want to.
@had-enough-470242 -- Keystone XL is a House Republican priority. Do you really need to ask if we are getting screwed?????
Do NoT be fooled by fringe politics ...
How short sighted - anything for politics.
Invade Canada.
Wake up folks - that oil was ALWAYS intended for export, even if it was pied to US Refineries first.
No, he denied it so his buddy warren buffet would not lose mountains of money transporting it on his trains. But you wont hear that on MSNBC will ya folks. He doesn't give a rats ass about the environment or our country.
I think its time for you all to wake up.
Google it.
So my question is, why the big rush by the GOP?
they only want to pipe to Houston so they can ship it out to China and other countries.
Scott: Excellent questions!
I want the oil to stay on this land, refined on site and bringing the gas back down to a buck fifty to rebuild America( roads and bridges, green energy network( the main thing oil should be used for))
Which has zero to do with Obama or his energy policies, it has everything to do with world markets and speculators.
Jhawke,
Oil consumption in the US is at it's lowest level in a decade.
Vote Ron Paul! dummies
HAHA everybody against the pipeline is acting like it's gonna be BUILT SPECIFICALLY TO LEAK...
pathetic.........
Why was Nerm (Posting 1.1) collapsed by the community? There was nothing inflammatory about his comments. Pretty spot on if you ask me.
Uh, no, this is misleading, the real reason Obama was "pushed to block the pipline" was because he was looking for a bigger handout from his buddy Buffett:
http://patriotupdate.com/17597/buffetts-railroad-among-winners-from-obamas-keystone-pipeline-denial
Mission accomplished!
Try at least reading the article, this is all the doing of the CANADIAN OIL CORPORATION NOT TEXAS.
Now David:
Your Zionism is clouding your reasoning terribly. I would hope most people in the world want peace.....and are not willing to wage war to achieve peace. It appears you prefer dictatorships over freedom and populism. Let the elite rule the world right?
you obviously have no clue... there are 3,813,932 people approximately that live in Alberta. Try doing research before you spout off.
cfllame1, I believe that was sarcasm.
Another do nothing, that would stand there watching as people are being massacred. How about this you come here to Afghanistan, and when (not if due to your being uninformed) you are going to be killed, I will stand around and just watch.
David475776
Dude, you talk a lot but don't say anything. But you are entertaining. What do you think will happen in Kurdistan and who is going to tap and take their reserves.
ps pace yourself big guy because you are going to get four more years of President Obama's policies.
Scott, David does say alot. I'm not sure if you are intelligent enough to understand. Go to bed it's probably kinda late for you.
You have never been to alberta ,have you?
ApostasyUSA -
"Nobody is there to see the mountains being chopped down.'
Nobody would see it if they were there-mountaintop removal is not being used as a mining method in western Canada.
Did you even bother to read the article-or just see the words oil and pipeline,-then go on your nonsense environmental/ political tirade?
ApostasyUSA --
Alberta has 3.8 million population (according to Statistics Canada) and is among the fastest growing of Canada's ten provinces.
Phil Minnesota what do you mean by 'many people live there jerk'?
He means Canadians are Jerk-Offs!!!
Real cheap!
Thank God for the best and brightest the US has to offer is looking out for us! Its like a warm placenta all around me!!!
O'bama is stealing oil out of our babies mouthes!
Kornfed, thanks for the laugh. I voted yours up.
HAHA everybody against the pipeline is acting like it's gonna be BUILT SPECIFICALLY TO LEAK...
pathetic.........
justoneguy,
no they are thinking realistically. It will leak eventually, it is an inevitability doubly so if BP or Halliburton have any thing to do with it.
LOL
US = bad
China = good
All you uniformed tree-hugging layabouts should charter a bunch of planes and ships and head on over to China and protest.
1899 - Charles Duell as Commissioner of the US Patent Office stated that the US Patent Office was no longer needed as "Everything that can be invented has been invented"
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m4070/is_2000_Jan/ai_59586526/
And this is the reason why people don't want to get away from oil, because their comfortable with it and have no vision to see the future with out it.
Eminent domain anyone?
Randy Thompson, a Nebraska landowner featured in The New York Times. NYT reports that if Thompson did not sell his land, Keystone would use the force of eminent domain to secure an easement to his land. How can a company, not even based in the United States, use the U.S. Federal Government to seize land? He is only one of many individuals fighting the fight against eminent domain.
AL-1735815
Solyndra anyone?? Drink the koolaid AL
That's a pathetic lie. Obama got more from BP than anyone in the last twenty years.
Buffet is part of that EVIL RICH you lefties are always whining about.
Wow! This really is a complex world we live in. Both sides can't make sense on this one. It is too complex, it is a lose/lose situation. Personally I wouldn't give you two Canadian pennies for Harper and his gang. Harper is a poor excuse for a leader.
And Oblama is a leader???????
yes he is a real leader and he is capable of leading the us for the next 4 years.
Obama is a real leader and he "is capable of leading the us (sic) for the next 4 years"
onward...straight over a cliff and into the abyss...
mygirl1....no GWB did that, now we are trying to climb out of a hole that took 8 years to dig. It will take many years to claw our way back.
----------------p111
Engineers know all about the how, but nothing about the why.
ddogsdad, have you been up to the tarsands?
Estimates of greenhouse gas emissions are 2 to 4 times that of conventional oil and way more greenhouse gases in the total production refining up to 40%? more.
p111...fascist left? Seriously? Get a dictionary.
Geez.
The bottom line is that we shouldn't risk the safety and health of U.S. citizens just so that it's easier for Canada to sell oil to China.
Toasty: Yup.
Note that it is just as easy and will make as many jobs if they build refineries near the oil fields.
energizer.bunny.1237: It creates temporary jobs, but we're left with a lifetime of environmental problems.
For all of you pro oil people here's a link to an article about drilling in TX:
http://www.fwweekly.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5311:dont-drink-the-water&catid=30:cover-story&Itemid=375
Now tell me what you think.
KXL has lied repeatedly about the benefits of building the pipeline. Refutation of lies about the Keystone XL pipeline can be found here:
www.ilr.cornell.edu/globallaborinstitute/research/upload/GLI_KeystoneXL_Reportpdf.pdf
alboyano-First of all you are wrong about who got us here, it was in fact president Clinton that pushed the banks to lend the way they were lending.
Vote this N1488r out in 2012 anyone is better.
Bill1488,
Bud you need to get your fact together I thin k, not once has this President ever gone over to a foreign country and apologized for anything this country has done.
Care to explain what N1488r means, sir?
That's a rhetorical question for the people crippled by bigotry by the way.
RLC1111-here is something for you to read, about Obama apologizing for America.
http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/obama-apologizes-to-muslim-terrorist-family-for-killing-their-america-hating-jihadi-son-stopped-by/question-2216935/?page=5
Also, here is a article explaining the policies of Bill Clinton that are the biggies contributing factor. His deregulation of the housing market because the poor could not afford the down payment or the closing costs, so he made it so that you could buy a house with no money down and no closing costs.
http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/hotproperty/archives/2008/02/clintons_drive.html
The sad thing is that you all vote.
So true.
With McCain and Palin, we would be in another couple of wars we could not pay for and a full blown economic collapse and depression.
I wish that we would have gotten McCain, he would have been so much more better than Obama has been or could ever be.
Another FAIL for Obama!
Republicans rule, and in 2012 we will kick Obama out of office and send him packing back to Chicago in a very FAST & FURIOUSLY way, watch and see.
What do you expect from a President whose whole philosophy boils to to one point:
"I won't allow half of Americans who pay no taxes to bear the burdon of the other half who aren't paying their share!"
We can't afford another 4 years of this!!!
@Jeff Brady
@ footballguy
How so? Please feel free to be specific.
its all RP BS.
All the "benefits" expected from the pipeline are lies:
www.ilr.cornell.edu/globallaborinstitute/research/upload/GLI_KeystoneXL_Reportpdf.pdf
Another fail for you!
We can live without oil but you will die in a poisonned environment, no doubt !
poodlefan007,
Blah, blah, blah, get off your high horse, STOP USING Electrictiy, Oil Based Plastics, clean drinking water pumped by electricity, computers, smart phones, internet, etc..
That's OK...we understand.
I can't understand why we should believe Obama.... too many lies, too many failed promises! He may be a nice guy, but hasn't proved to me to be an adequate leader. This keystone issue is just one example!
Terry:
"...this is just a bunch of environmental whining, the chance of a pipeline rupture and a big spill are pretty remote."
The same thing was said about Horizon, nuclear (Three Mile, Japan, Russia), Valdez, etc., etc., etc.
Don`t you idiots get it the US is not going to use any of that oil its to dirty to use here and there will only be a few jobs created and alot of 1%ers alot richer you dumbasses just don`t get it what a waste of brain matter.
Debi-1314897
"...this is just a bunch of environmental whining, the chance of a pipeline rupture and a big spill are pretty remote."
None of those incidents you mentioned there were pipelines. There have been no big pipeline spills in the US. There have been small ones, but none with large environmental impacts. None in Alaska either and that pipeline runs hundreds of miles through the Alaskan wilderness.
Terry753375,
Other than the fact that you are completely wrong, you're right.
Oil and Gas leaks and spills form pipelines in the US
2000- 10
2001- 8
2002- 6
2003- 10
2004- 12
2005- 8
2006- 8
2007- 6
2008- 12
2009- 9
2010- 25
The degree of environmental impact is debatable but not deniable.
vwterry, the same could be said for intestinal gas leaks. You are right, the degree of environmental impact is debatable but not deniable. There have been virtually no major environmental impact with the Alaska pipeline.
The spills are not limited to just the Alaska pipeline. These are all across the country. Impact of these spills vary by degree but to insinuate that a spill of over 800,000 gallons in Mich., for instance, did not cause a major environmental crisis is just insane.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/28/us/28brfs-800000GALLON_BRF.html
And that's just 1 example. The cumulative effects are mounting daily.
You can say the same for sewage, or garbage, but we have to handle it. The cumulative effects are mounting daily.
Typical right wing moronic retort. Kind of like when we were kids with "I know you are but what am I?" Come back when you have something intelligent to add.
Exaggerate much, vw? Your overstating the facts isn't very intelligent, either.
What exaggeration?
your "cumulative effects".
If there are bonds sold to build either of these pipelines, or to build a school, library, sewer plant, highway or whatever in Anytown, USA - there is Chinese money (surplus US dollars) available to invest in those things also.
p111...Pipelines can be safe, but it is stupid to route them over major water supply.
Scott- I totally agree. I wish everyone understood.
Nooooo..... Say it ain't so.
President Obama making a decision for political reasons?
Impossible!
We shouldn't sacrifice U.S. citizens' health and safety for Canadian profits. That's hardly political.
Toasty McGrath
I agree with you %100 we should NEVER sacrifice US citizens health for Canadian profits
And I might add, the Canadians were focused on SELLING the majority of oil to China anyway, that was the plan ...it would be American workers working which is great, but the majority of oil in PLAN A this first plan would be sold to other countries.
President Obama did the right thing on this particular plan: No environmental
distructiion of the USA and also we were not going to benefit from oil as much as
we would need.
We can't afford another 4 years of this!!!
Well Bill T with U head upS u A,
You may say we can't afford 4 more years, but I would prepare for it anyway.
Dear Mr Gingrich
They were temporary jobs to begin with, P1.
p111 What company is it that is rolling all that pipe and where are they getting the steel? Just curious.
I like this gem from Gingrich:
Well, Mr. Gingrich, if you substitute American president" with "Canadian prime minister" then your sentence will have some truth to it.
Seems Harper is the one making the deal here.
That's fine...I agree with your comment.s However, don't start complaining when we are involved in wars due to oil!! You can't have both.
poodlefan007,
And yet, you uninformed academic idealists do not say anything about the Natural Gas extraction from the depleted US Oil Wells (the Oil Corporations pushing Natural Gas to get ever cent they invested in Oil Wells), the toxic chemical Fracking Process going Directly into the ground Drinking Water.
In case you're having trouble picturing it, here's a photo someone took a hundred years ago or so:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67827566@N00/5348211752/
So right now, throw your computer, smart phone, television, etc. into the trash can. And stop your nonsense trolling. Or are you a hypocrite.
Ray T, you make a good case. But, Poodleface, and other libs have no idea how much oil enriches their lives.
Thank you Obama. We sure could have used the jobs and lower oil prices in the states.
Oil was going to be shipped overseas anyway, thats why it was being sent to texan ports. ie: No reduced oil prices in the states
And the Jobs were barely enough to make a dent in anything, let alone the fact that the Canadian Company probably would have hired canadian workers.
What the F**K are you talking about.
The US Imports Oil and Exports Refined Fuels.
Living proof of the Failed US Education System.
Please read, understand before you pos, Bypolar. The oil will not stay in the United States.
So basically "jobs for Canada and lower gas prices for China."
Most of the oil coming out of Keystone was going to sold to other
countries Not the USA...that is a fact from the original Plan set forth
It was a bad deal all around considering another American sacrifice,
They would be temp jobs AND China and other countries in the Pac Rim
would guarantee to buy the majority of oil out of that plan.
You have that almost right, they can not hire Americans to work in CANADA. If they ever build a pipeline from the north slope of Alaska to the lower 48 Canadians will be building the vast majority of it.
ByPolar - there are only temporary jobs, the real jobs would be in fixing our infrastructure
Most of the jobs go to Canada Why don't you research before you speak?
hey idiots its ( the oil) to dirty read my lips its to dirty to use here it will go over seas get it and the jobs won`t amount to s**t just another teapublican BS lie to help win the presidents job back and then set us back about 50yrs so good luck with that one in 2012
Let Canada sell the Communists their oil. Americans can then buy more cheap plastic from China made with Canadian oil.
If we want to get China out of the Oil market we need to stop buying petrolium products like plastics and synthetic fibers made in China.
If you think back, those with the most oil reserves WIN WARS!
Those with the biggest armies can win wars and more Walmart money to China can build armies.
Armies are not built without oil.
Another bonehead move by our bonehead President.
This guy should just resign and focus on civil rights which he doesn't have a brain cell in his head to handle being the President.
And you have given us no facts or even reasons. Nothing but schoolyard insults. Maybe you need to repeat the third grade again.
What the F**K are you talking about.
The US Imports Oil and Exports Refined Fuels.
Living proof of the Failed US Education System.
david, what in the F**K are you talking about.
david-475776 - I agree, yes, you are living proof of the Failed US Education System (your own words and poor grammar).
David- Thanks for thr good info.
@mailman8... I applaud your post, you hit the nail on the head... perhaps you could open a school and teach right wingers how to use their brain... all the facts and none of the B.S... you are wise beyond your years... Thank you
All I can say is NO PIPELINE!! Somehow it is tied to to Koch Bros.
So much for being Wise,
This is tied to President Obama's Buddy "Mr. Corporate America" that makes the Koch Brothers look like two cent gangstas.
It is Obama that has continuously screwed the American people for over five years, first as senator, now president.
Again, this has been studied for over three years, it's a delay tactic to get it past the election. Obama is playing politics with jobs.
So DJ, your proposal to increase American jobs and revenue... Is to make it easier for Canada to sell oil to China? Really?
Odumbo and his liberal democrats failed America and it's tax payers once again. Time to Impeach this jerk.
You sound like a real expert---why not offer your expertise?
Chuck is an ex-spurt, all right. A has-been drip under pressure.
He did, he stated that Obama should be impeached, I second that. Obama is a liar and a failure, and no amount of talk will change it, you and Obama must be very proud of America's first down grade in history, I was hoping that Obama would stay close to his voting record in the Senate, after all 98 percent of his votes were present, he simply could not make a decision and America can see that his record has stayed the same, but very soon America will go to the polls and kick Obama out
FAST & FURIOUSLY
Stop the foolish nonsense and get on with it.
DV's right, pollute some of our most important water tables so that Canada can more easily sell oil to China. Way to stand up for Americans...
