We are all so 'only human'. I wondered how long I would go before someone would suggest this tragedy has a political connection, be it some party/figure is responsible or some party/figure has a solution. How long have their been poor people on Earth? And we think we can outwit it with a vote? That's a sad and poor logic.

How many factors contributed to this? How long ago did those factors come into play?

1. You have a mother who can't make a living wage with three children and a step-father (i.e. failed marriage). Can we blame the economy on her economic condition or the fact that she likely had little education. But let's go back. Where did her disregard for education come from? Was it parental attitudes? Was it her familie's disconnection from a caring community? Did HER parents have anyone who cared or might help them through things? What were their education backgrounds?

2. Then you have trailer parks in general. Ever live in one? My family did when I was younger. What happens when you mix desperate women with several young kids around the only place sex offenders can possibly afford to live? And who's going to help them?

3. But then you have self-motivation. At what point did this mother become overwhelmed by everything to where she felt there was no way to further herself and future for her children? And with a special needs kid...

I can't imagine what this woman has been and is currently going through, or what her other two daughters will go through. It seems like such a vicious cycle and I haven't heard anyone, in all my life, ever put forth an sensible solution. Perhaps there just isn't one.

I like to think we start in school. That we put resources together to actually help every kid feel special, needed and part of something bigger, but our society just isn't like that, is it? I don't have kids. When I first got out on my own I had no place to go and not much money. They only place I could afford was an apartment in a neighborhood where the local pizza place refused to send a delivery person. I saw a guy nearly get beaten to death by a mob on the sidewalk under my window. A few months later there was someone laying on the ground stabbed. I had to walk past him like I didn't see him or I'd be next. I did run to the 7-11 and call the police though. Some drug crazed dude went off and started shooting at cars in the parking lot. Many other bad things happened in the six months I was there. I finally decided I would rather be homeless. You can't make decisions like that when you have kids. You have to make sure they have a roof over their heads.

I did not blame the mother, only question her parenting. She had the ability to find out whether she was putting her children in harms way. It could have just as easily been on of the fifteen sex offenders that did this.

Here is a question for you. Knowing that you can simply look at a website to see if there are sex offenders in yours or your children's neighborhood, would you simply stand by, or try to get them moved or take them in? I know hindsight is 20/20, but there is common logic.

Anyway, they show (table 43c) that for adults (>=18yo), suspects arrested for "Sex offenses (except forcible rape and prostitution)" are white 74.2 percent of the time and black 22.9 percent of the time.

Since the black population is about 12.6 percent of the US population and the white population is about 72.4% (see here), the stats you point out indicate that blacks are way overrepresented as a percentage of the population in such arrests and whites are very slightly overrepresented.

I don't think so. I have no illusions that it is a safe world. There hasn't been a day when I don't know where my kids are and who they are with. As far as no efforts of my own, you have no idea how proactive I am in trying to care the safety of my kids. Including discussions with them at very young ages about predators. I researched sex offenders in my neighborhood since they were born. In fact, we moved because one moved in around the corner.

So don't presume that you know me or what lengths I go to to protect my children.

Educated Voter - I believe the $100 is for "lot rent". This applies to everyone with a unit on the grounds. If you do not own your trailer, you are also paying rent on the trailer, or a mortgage payment on said unit.

In addition, you are responsible for utilities.

Fort Wayne is a cheap housing market, that is for sure. But median income is quite low as well. If you go there with money in your pocket, you will be OK. But if you are starting with nothing, it is quite hard to get ahead.

Plumadore has a picture of Souders' 3 girls (one of the 6 yr olds is a step), that refers to them as Princesses, or some such (taken in the summer, based on background in picture of a Ft Wayne dam).... The little girl who was killed had multiple disabilities -- ADHD, PTSD(at age 9 !?!), vision, hearing, and behavioral issues.

Souders also INSISTED that it WASN'T anyone at the trailer park that would have harmed or taken the child, while also stating she sleepwalked, and had gone outside, unlocking the door to do so, while sleepwalking in the past.... Smells pretty fishy!

As a mother, I never would have left my daughter with a male acquaintance, especially one with a criminal record that included assault. In fact, there were few close male relatives I ever left my child with even for brief periods of time. Especially if my child had special needs as this child did-they are often difficult to care for and many people do not have the patience to deal with those special needs. Sad it has to be that way, but too often it is the mother's boyfriend or a male friend of the family perpetrating these kinds of crimes against children and it's just not worth the risk.

Seriously, I can totally understand having to live in a dangerous situation due to financial hardships, but I think a large amount of this tragedy, and a fair amount of other tragedies like this are due to bad parenting, and I think if that was more of the focus on these types of situations, more of them could be prevented. As most of the parents on this thread echoed, you simply do not leave your kids in this type of environment just because of the flu. My Mom was a single mother with stage 3-breast cancer, which almost killed her, and even on death's door she busted her butt to take care of me. The Chemo and radiation treatment and major surgery she underwent made her so weak and sick she could barely move some days, but she still managed to get me to school most days, and made sure somehow there was food in the house and I had everything I needed. And she was a single woman who worked the night shift for most of her life with a blue collar job, so it's not like we lived a life of luxury. I was only 9-10 at the time and even now in my mid 20's I have no idea how she did it. In most of these stories it's always the parents or caretakers going out to the store to get liquor, or getting drunk, or buying cigarettes and then finding the kids " mysteriously" disappeared, or women that get with abusive men they barely know. Very few have I heard of recently where it was two great parents that stumbled into some completely unavoidable tragic accident. I say we start mandating some parenting classes.

If the mother was that sick with the flu and her fever was so high she would go out cold. She needed to call 911 to be taken to the hospital. If there was no one with her when she was being taken to the hospital the personal would have call social services. There would have been some responseable adult to take care of the children until she was better. If not the Dept of Soc. Sec would have been the ones to be held accountable. I find it very hard to believe that the mother had no clue MORE THAN HALF of the occupants of the mobile home park were sex offenders. There wasn't 1...there were 15. And ironically, the guy that allegedly killed the little girl, wasn't one of them.

Matilda - THANK YOU! The initial primary investigation sent local law enforcement to the 15 registered sex offenders. The laws regulating the previously convicted offenders worked quite well. Not to say the 15 won't offend again, but with great laws like the sex offender registry in place, these people know they are being watched.

If the park manager was being paid by the State to "provide" mobile homes to these sex offenders, he/they may not have wanted any of the other tenants to know. It would have cut his income drastically, if they had complained. However, the park manager should also be chastized for allowing families to live there unaware. It should have been posted in the office, that the park was a haven for sex offenders. Then again, the State paid landlords are not going to want to give up any money/income - they can be that ruthless and endanger children in just that way.

The park manager probably does not tell anyone about the other tenants because he/she could then be charged with harassment from those tenants for telling others about his/her legal situation. There is a public website that lists all of the offenders "registered" in your area and even that list is not accurate due to those scumbags moving and not notifying law officials as to where they are currently residing. I do know that certain offenders have to place signs at Halloween that they will not be giving out candy so that the children do not go to their doors.

One has to assume that there are sex offenders everywhere-in fact that is pretty much the case-and those are just the ones who were caught, convicted and registered. Just assume they are there and act accordingly.

I've read that one in three women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. That's a LOT of sex offenders, and I'm sure the government doesn't know about even half of them. Best to keep your kids with someone you know you can trust. I wouldn't say never leave them with a male, because that denigrates a lot of good, trustworthy men, but for goodness sake make sure you know the guy before you leave the kids with them! I would never leave my kids with anyone other than a family member, or a friend that I've known for years and seen interacting with other kids.

This little girl was beaten to death with a brick. There has been no mentioning of any sexual abuse, that story just states that sex offenders lived there. To beat anyone to death and then dismember them, that is just pure rage. This a viscious and brutal attack, and one can only hope that the first blow either knocked her out or killed her so that she wasn't aware of the brutality.

Freedom - I had looked at other sites coverage of this and ABC are quoting the police that this murderer said that he hit her in the head with a brick while she was standing at the door to the porch and continued beating her at that spot. There is no indication in the police statements of any type of sexual assault.

Further information on this guy is that he was taking care of the girl's grandfather until he died Dec. 3rd and had lived next door to his daughter, the girl's mother. The girl's grandfather was a registered sex offender. The girls had been staying with him for a week.

And there you have it. This little girl's grandfather was a registered sex offender. Now, can we close the book on the issue of if the mom knew if there were sex offenders in the area? No need for the Internet.

Juan Matamoros's full bladder is going to cost him. Twenty-one years ago, he had too much to drink, and was caught when he urinated on a street in Essex, Massachusetts. Matamoros was charged with "lewd and lascivious behavior" — which apparently got him classified as a sex offender. The poor judgment of the parents and others in this situation is possible a contribution but they will live with that. I wouldn't say, "Never leave a child with anyone else", but I would say that parents should be very cautious in who they choose to entrust their children to. Better safe than sorry.

We have a great family friend who doted on our sons from the time they were born. He asked the kids to call him "Uncle Dave" and the kids grew up thinking he was actually their uncle. One time, he mentioned that it would be fun to have our oldest son (who was maybe 6 years old) stay overnight at his house sometime. My husband told me that he was uncomfortable with that. He said that even though our friend was a great guy and seemed to be totally appropriate with the kids...why take a chance? The fact that our friend hadn't dated any women in the years that we had known him also triggered a tiny bit of concern (could he be lonely and thus give in to temptation for physical contact with a child?) Our friend never ended up proposing an actual sleepover, but we he had made our decision -- this was a positive adult-child friendship, but we would restrict their time together to just what we parents could observe.

It is not possible to keep your children safe 24/7. We cannot keep them in a bubble. There are monsters out there that prey on just this type of child--as well as perfectly normal and well raised children. The parents will have a life time to consider all the "should haves" and "should not haves" and the perp, hopefully, will not see another day of freedom or another child for the rest of his--I hope--very short life. Sadly, they probably had no choice, it was a roof over their head with water, bathroom and a place to make food. It's so easy to say live on the street, yea with three small children that certainly would work, right. The ironic part is this guy was not a sex offender, he was a "friend" who they trusted. She left the kids there for a week. The murder had convictions in 3 states. He lived with her registered sex-offender father, in his trailer, until he died Dec. 3. He was a child molester.

Mother, Tarah Souders INSISTED that it certainly WASN'T anyone from the trailer park that had harmed or abducted her child. Hmmm... Then also mentioned the child would sleepwalk, opening locked doors, & go outdoors... So, despite living in a 24 shack trailer park, with 15 registered sex offenders there, mom was SURE it COULDN'T have been anyone from Sex-Offender infested MobileManor who done it!

Plumadore dismembered the little girl, then put her head, hands, & feet in gramp's freezer. The rest of her body was put in freezer bags & dumped in a local dumpster.

Something just feels so entirely bizarre & "off" about this case.... Plumadore had a summertime pic of Souders' 3 children on his FB page that refers to them as "Princesses."

Sadly, from my experience as a Correctional Officer in a Maximum Security Prison for Adult males, he will go straight to protective custody. People that harm children are scum to the other inmates and they will quickly be dealt with. Wouldn't that be some kind of justice though? Admit to the crime, go to prison and die at the hands of your fellow inmates!!! Hopefully he would finally feel what torture and pain I'm sure the child felt at his hands.

Nana...I worked as a Health Care Administrator and a nurse in a prison for five years and in an ER/OR for another 28 years. I agree with you. Not all of those in protective custody are child killers and this man's safety cannot be guaranteed--as much as those like you try to prevent anything from happening. It is possible that he won't be as safe as he thinks. I agree, most like him, PC up as soon as they hit the door. Cowardly jerks. If he thought it was a good idea then, why not explain to the general pop why it isn't a good idea now? I hope he does PC up--Dahmer did. How did that work out for him? Sadly often the person that does injury to a child is not only a trusted family friend, but a relative. In my case my biological father abused me and tried to kill me, assaulted my 12 year old aunt and then tried to kill both my mother and me. By the time I was 4 my mother was in an institution and my 18 year old aunt had custody of me, she and her husband adopted me and have been wonderful parents. The man who raised me and took care of me, taught me to read and ride a bike and not to talk to strangers, helped me learn to drive and walked me down the aisle at my wedding had no biological ties to me at all yet he is my father in the important sense of the word.

My point is, women should not leave their children, male or female, with any people, male or female, that they are not 10,000% sure of. Sadly, this woman and her family considered this man a friend and did not understand what he was capable of. The parents are not to blame for that, the scumbag that could look at the child of his friend, or any other child, and think "victim" is.

Being married and having a stable family are so "old fashioned". All the "cool kids" are staying single, partying, and popping out kids left and right. Look at Casey Anthony, Michelle Parker and countless other single moms and children of single moms. They didn't just leave any child with their "friend", they left a child with emotional & physical problems with a grown-man who isn't a father/ parent himself. I don't care how sick the mother was, she could have cared much better for those three kids in a compromised state than any "friend" could have. Not only was he not family, he also has a criminal record. And since when does being sick make it impossible to check on your children while they're with someone else all day? They didn't realize until 8:30 that the child was missing?

I don't see where it's right to judge a parent, or parents, at a time like this when so little is known. I've known people where abuse, sexually and otherwise, is at the hands of family and extended family. Being married and having a stable family are so "old fashioned". All the "cool kids" are staying single, partying, and popping out kids left and right. Look at Casey Anthony, Michelle Parker and countless other single moms and children of single moms. This liberal notion of "do what feels good, consequences be damned", has a price, and we see it every day in the news when another child or single mom turns up missing or dead.

What does being married or not being married...or having children out of wedlock have anything to do with this story.

The mother was married to the children's step-father (you don't get that title unless you are married) and the mother was ill and the father (step) worked nights. So exactly what does anything in your post have to do with anything in this article? A little girl was murdered by a trusted family friend while being babysat.

And to everyone else...Where exactly did the parents do anything wrong? Had the mother been working during the day and the father been sleeping because he worked nights, the kids would have still been at a babysitter. I don't feel like this is a case of bad parenting or anything like that, just a sick creep who murdered a little girl and did lord know what else to her before and after. Everyone needs to get off of their high horses, but obviously none of you have had to make such difficult decisions that offer your family the best possible protection all while being vulnerable because of circumstance. We do not know any about this family besides the facts that the mother was sick with the flu (which, BTW, if you ever had the flu you would know that you aren't able to care for yourself, let alone anyone else..a pretty serious illness) and the step-dad was asleep after working nights. That is all we know about them, so let's stop playing the blame game and calling them bad parents. We do not know their situation. Blame lies with one man, and he confessed already.

I did have a sitter coming to my home to take care of them while I worked, and after coming home early hearing her yell (not knowing I was there), I fired her. After that, my children went into public daycare, where I could watch them interact, be well watched by credentialed employees and where if I had any doubts, could go to someone in charge.

They do not have enough information as to how ill the mother was. some people with the flu are so ill vomiting dizzy etc that they cannot get to the bathroom alone. I thought they were suppose to tell when renting, found out no they don't have to tell Well I was stuck for a year with them, but did go around toneighbors who had grandchildren coming to their houses during the summer and let them know not to let the girls or boys go into the woods hiking without an adult going with them as he was a sex offender. I told them to look it up and where. I hate all sex offenders, and think they should be put in jail for life with the regular prisoners or a mental hospital and never released, they are not cured and will do it again. This I know and sometimes even if you tell your mother, she won't want to believe you as the person may be their security. So you leave home as soon as you can. The fact that when you are sick with the flu (maybe not you cuz you're obviously super mom) for many individuals, they shouldn't be left alone themselves, barely able to move or even get themselves to the toilet, delirious from fever, etc, let alone take care of 3 young children with at least one with behavior and emotional issues. Or the fact that had the woman been at work that her children would have likely been with a babysitter anyway (since school is out for the holidays). Or perhaps I was wrong that sometimes parents have to make choices (the best of 2 evils) that unfortunately make them and their children vulnerable. These choices are made not because they want to make them, but because they have no other options...you know like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. My qualifications? A single dad raising my youngest daughter for the last decade because her mother didn't meet the court's definition of a fit parent. Many moms have trusted their daughters to come and spend over-nights with mine. I consider it the highest responsibility and greatest honor to return them to their families healthy, happy and well fed. Speaking to the manner in which I was raised, anything less than that would be unacceptable.

Not everyone is as lucky as you are to be able to leave their kids with only relatives.Some people don't have family.And I've heard about a few grandparents that have done some pretty horrible things to the grandchildren.

So if you're not an "immediate family member", you can't be trusted with other people's children? My husband and I became involved with a baby girl many years ago, no relationship to us at all, but over the years she has lived with us off and on, and we love her as much as we love our own children. She will be 16 soon, and thinks of us as her grandparents. We would NEVER think of harming her, and if anything happened to her it would rip us apart as much as if something had happened to any of our "birth" children. This child is so much a part of our lives that she is even on our cell phone contract even though at this time she lives with her father and step-mother, 2 states away. She spends summers with us, calls us regularly, we provide much of her needs, such as school clothes and supplies, and as much of her "wants" as possible, such as IPods, computers, etc. We have no hidden agenda, we just fell in love with a baby girl 15 years ago, to the point that we moved 1,900 miles away to be with her when her dad moved across country with her.

What happened is tragic, but to paint every non-relative caregiver as a danger to children is ludicrous.

Of course blame the mom. She probably blames herself and rightly so. Extremely poor judgment. Would the mom have trusted him to watch a million dollars for her. Probably not. Then she should not have trusted that man with her priceless children. I, too, have been sick, face in the toilet sick, and managed to watch three children while my husband was deployed. Took all three of us to the emergency room once and wouldn't let my babies leave my side so the nurse gave us a semi-private room. The babies slept in the bed while I got antibotics and IV fluids. My dad, whom I would trust with a million dollars without hesitation, drove eight hours to watch my boys so that I could attend an 8 hour seminar. I would not have gone otherwise. Finally, mom married a man that cared more about sleeping than watching her children when she needed him the most. As I mom, I can't excuse her from her poor judgement.

I think that many times these days, when some young "lady" has a child, they don't know who the biological father even is. That's a bad start out of the gate. I see this often around here( I am from Indiana).

o'really, I don't know what state you live in, but in Colorado (at least in my city) the police and sheriff's departments both have an online registry that list the names, addresses, and pictures, along with a brief list of their crimes. Of course the list is not complete due to people not registering as they should, but for me, this list gave me a little piece of mind when we were house hunting before my daughter was born. As far as the rest of my neighbors, I say hi and bye, maybe wave, and leave it at that...I think this, like many stories like it, is proof that some parents have children and just really don't know how to handle the responsibility. This little girl had emotional problems, so to leave her with someone who maybe doesn't know or understand what to do if she has an "episode" is like an open invitation for something to happen!

Many are harmless though, if you look at the details on some, they were 18 and convicted of having sex with the 16 year old girlfriend or something 10 years ago, hardly a menace to society, but there are plenty that are absolutely dangerous and should have to wear GPS monitors 24x7 for the rest of their days.

It sounds to me like the parents were tired of being parents and often passed off their responsibilities. If the stepdad were sleep tell the kids to play in their room and be quiet or watch tv! No one can tell me that he was a trusted friend of the family and no one knew he had a record, people don't let that kind of gossip go by! I mean I just don't understand why if the kids were over there from what was said a whole day at least neither parent called to check on those girls, and that the mother didn't see or hear him drive off to go to the "gas station" and we know he left those girls longer than he said and the fact that the younger sisters didn't speak up leads me to believe they were witness to what happened to their sister or he terrified them into saying nothing. Because of all the little kids I know they tell EVERYTHING! These parents disgust me and like you said everyone will tell all their secrets. This has nothing to do with race, gender, it all comes down to bad parenting, ignorance, and bad decision making skills. These people defending this mother nad making millions of excuses for leaving her daughters with him are sad and pathetic. It absolutely amazes me how some people are able to rush to judgement in all these cases. They assume that they have the inside skinny on the whole situation because they read a couple of paragraphs in a news story and that makes them judge, jury and executioner!!!! Wow! They can "assume" exactly what went on because they see all, know all, think all..

Unlike these "stupid" parents, the above have never felt the difficulty of trying to find a home they can afford. Unlike these "stupid" parents they have never had to deal with a situation they feel unable to handle. Unlike these "stupid" parents they have never made a stupid call because they were too sick or too poor to do what is right. The only blessing to this is that as the world turns, the judges have built some karma they will have to live down. They will have to learn what it is like to be condemned by a community for what they didn't know and couldn't choose.

I could point out that in spite of living in a trailer park that also houses 15 "sexual offenders" it wasn't the sexual offenders that did this to the child. So why is that an issue here? Why is it an issue that needed to be reported in the news story? Because that makes the parents guilty by the association?

Much as I hate to point it out, even "felons" that have served their time in prison have the right to live under a roof. So you make stricter laws to keep them out of your precious neighborhoods and since most of us don't care to freeze out in the cold you have abetted the "felon" to commit another crime to survive. How very kind of you. Surface logic at it's worst.

Before you do your little rush to judgement, try to imagine the pain, guilt and suffering that family is suffering. There is nothing you can say to condemn them that they aren't already saying to themselves. So don't load up your bandwagon with more shame for them. It really isn't affecting your private little world. Just admit you don't know it all and back off.

Before you go spewing judgements over this woman's life, maybe you should all check the registry for offenders in your area. They don't just reside in trailer parks you know! They live everywhere.

Very sad for the little girl. However, grandma, it's OK for you to point out the facts and that's not judgement right? LOL. And Tammy sweetie, I do check the registry. And I sure as heck have NEVER left my kids w/ anyone other than my own parents or in laws who do are not freaks and do not have a criminal record. I know some may take offense by this, but I would never leave my child w/ alone w/ a man. Men who are too eager to help you w/ your kids are more than likely sex offenders - every alarm bell should be going off. Even when I was throwing up for 24 hours straight, I did not send the kids over to my in laws who I trust completely. Why? They are MY kids, MY responsibility. They had stomach flu too and I didn't want to burden my in laws and thought they NEEDED THEIR MOM AND DAD. No excuses here please. No the mother did not have a cold. I'm from the area. Do you always believe what you people read in the papers? She's been really ill, in and out of the ER, and reportedly once even in ICU. Get off your high horse and do stuff to change the system to keep offenders off the streets, and in jail. Or how bout we do as our country used to and fricken hang the bastards. The mother had no way of knowing, and had no way of living elsewhere. Its great your lucky enough to not have to live in a sex offender neighborhood. The latest article to come out about this reveals that this little girl's grandfather was a sex offender and the 'only reason' the mother moved in with her father is because he had emphysema and she had to 'take care of him'. What is outrageous is, around the time the mother moved in, she questioned her father about the scumbag who ended up killing her daughter!!!! She explicitly asked him if she had to worry about this vermin touching her daughter.

My sympathy for this "mother" is dwindling. If you ever have to question whether you think a man would cause harm to your child(ren) then you have NO business, NEVER, EVER EVER EVER, EVERRRRRRRRRRRR leaving your children with him. Julia, the most trusted friend and sitter I have is a man. He is 350lbs and 6 foot 7. I can say that my children are very safe with him. May I remind you of the many women that have just killed their children or somehow lost them. Not all men are sex addicts or such. So, Julia sweetie...stop judging others without all the facts.
