It is always tragic to hear about fires where there is loss of life. This one sounds like it took most, if not all, of a family. My heart goes out to the survivors and the family(ies) of those lost this morning.

Its truly sad how many house fires start during Christmas, due to the nature of the holiday. Whether its the tree catching fire. Or the electrical shorting out. Or that extra heater malfunctioning. Or a candle falling over. etc. etc. Even the number of kitchen fires goes up, because of the extra cooking most do. Condolences to the survivors and their family and friends. This is no way to remember Christmas..

I have to agree. Hopefully they were out before the fire came. The neighor heard screaming, I hope that they didn't suffer and went quickly. Such a horrible & tragic way to pass. My prayers to the family & friends of those involved. I hope the survivors have a swift & painless recovery.

Can't you just show compassion to the people who lost their family members? I am not a churchgoer or avid believer in God but I definitely don't discount the idea that something more is out there. I also agree that there are many terrible things done both in the name of Christianity and by Christians by terrible people, who can be part of any religion or belief system. That doesn't mean that all Christians or non-Atheists need to be tarred with the same brush. It also doesn't give you the right to come on here and try your hardest to be horrible to people. If someone wants to say God, then let them. If they just want to wish the family well and put them in their prayers, then let them. I am by no means an active Christian (haven't been to church in fifteen years) but I do believe that there are many things out there we still do not understand, including possibly a God. Dry Christmas trees, candles, electricity, and the basic jimmie-rigged nature of cheap holiday decorations might have played a part in this.
Add to that an old house that probably had knob-and-tube wiring, old wood windows painted shut, balloon framing with no fireblocks, and you've got a prescription for disaster.
Let's all learn a lesson from this. Fire safety is only useful if it's done BEFORE a fire.
Thank you for sharing some details regarding older housing... It can help me and others what to inquire if shopping and/or renovating. What happened is a tragedy and I'm sadened by the loss of a family.. I live in New England and I see many homes evoking concerns about safety particularly the typical designs involving shingles.
Most community fire departments will give you a no-cost fire safety review of your property. They are all about preventing these things from happening too.
Alternately, a city building inspector might be able to do it as well, depending on your community (it's a requirement of most commercial properties to have a fire safety inspection/review).
Most community fire departments also give away free smoke detectors. If you don't have one or you're not sure if yours is working - go get one.
A lot of people where I live actually go to bed leaving their outside and inside lights on.
Here too, DS and it always amazes me that they are that careless. My house is 156 years old....my Dad is an electrician. Needless to say, I've learned to never leave anything that is unnecessary turned on....not to overload circuits and, never take a short-cut on electricity.

Reading that this home was under renovation makes me think that maybe a power tool or something that was misued caused this tragic fire. How sad this happened on Christmas. God does not cause the pain and suffering people have, people cause it. There are people starving to death in this world, not caused by God but by those of us who stand by and do NOTHING! We let those people starve to death, we who have so much, such excesses, we let it happen. Did you ever see what restaurant rhrows out, each piece of lettuce must be perfect or it's thrown away, The wasted food food could feed many people for a week. That's my point, we let people starve, go homeless or without clothes, books, medical treatment, and yet people blame God. He gave us our abilities and when we misuse them, others suffer. Organized religion holds little appeal for me, but I have no problem with those who do enjoy church and get something out of it. I saw a real tree go up in flames in the window of a home. It took less than one minute for the entire tree was gone and the living room in full flame. So I took my real tree down, put it out in the yard for the birds and bought an artifcial tree. So very sad for that family.
Stamford is where I was born and raised, and although I live somewhere else now, it is eerie to say the least, when you see or hear about something like that. My heart goes out to the families. Nothing worse could have happened.
So they don't know yet what caused it? I'll put odds on a Christmas Tree fire. Ever seen one of those go up? Used to burn ours after season by fire pit....WHOOSH like a roman candle doused in gasoline!

No offense, but I seriously doubt god was paying any attention to them. If there was a god blessing their souls, he should have done it before they burned to death. Blessings now? Too little too late.
