Ok, the violence on the border regions is a symptom of a problem. They are not the root cause. Until we find an intelligent way to deal with drugs in this country, the violence around drug trafficking will continue. If you really think that putting up a wall will stop the flow of drugs into this country, I have a bridge from Texas to New York you can buy, I'll sell it cheap.

I want our borders safe, but I am a realist, which we don't see much of in DC nowadays. Ask your legislator to find a new and effective way to stop the drug war. Until then, your borders will never be safe.

The whole reason the 'war on drugs' was started was because it was correctly recognized as being a root cause of crime, robberies, and murder to begin with. It was an honorable intention and by no means should we 'legalize' such destructive substances. However, I'd be one to admit that there needs to be a change here.

My righteous anger is aimed at exactly where it should be aimed, which is the "government". The solution is not big government but legalization of marijuana at least. By now, only people that live in caves are the ones that believe this so-called war on drugs has any effect at all save for filling prisons and enriching drug cartels, not to mention maintaining a large government bureaucracy.

There should be a "Castle Doctrine" where people have immunity from prosecution for defending themselves from these intruders, so long as it's done on their land, and is something a number of states have already adopted.

The real question folks need to be asking themselves..is just where do our so called elected politicans stand on this issue ? If anyone has been paying attention..you will notice that all latino's are being bowed down too for votes...which allows illegals all the time they need . President Obama has no interest in upholding Constitutional law regarding illegal alien traffic in the U.S. Why? Well first of all, if the US didn't have a drug problem they wouldn't have a market What is fascinating to me is that the ONLY young adults and grownups that I know that often use drugs are liberals. Of course most young adults today are liberals because they want somebody to take care of them and so they look to government to be all things for them. The older folks still taking drugs are the baby boomer hippies many camouflaged in suits today. I will however admit this. Many boomers and many of the young adults today have an alcoholic problem as well. Neither vice is good, but even when Hillary Clinton pointed out that if there wasn't a market for drugs they wouldn't be smuggling the drugs in to this country and still the public ignored here as well. We are just plain STUPID.

I am extremely sad for those living on the borders because our government is basically calling them liars. Obama and democrats support open borders and do not want to clamp down on anything that could be construed as anti-Mexican. They want and need the future votes. It is that simple and that is why they are making this a political issue instead of a national security issue. It boggles the mind that if our borders are so porous why can't terrorists transport dangerous weapons etc, into this country.

We have spent billions in the name of democracy in the ME with really zero success. Imagine how much border enforcement could have been done with that money?

I own a good bit of land and consider every inch MINE. To know that smugglers were using that land to pollute my country and put humans in physical harm makes me sick. That's funny theboy's, my experience is the exact opposite, so is the Congressional budget offices experience. 3 to 1, that is the amount of money spent on welfare in red states compared to blue states. I personally know more Republican's children use drugs than democrat's unless you count marijuana as a drug, then it's probably equal. And more people are arrested on drug charges in red states than blue states. These are cold hard facts that can't be denied, so your gonna have to clarify your apparent, "feelings", about the issues.

@3.17 -- Ronzwyf, those signs in southern AZ have been there since long before Obama took office...because the drug traffickers have been there that long too. The areas where those signs are posted are very remote and mostly uninhabited -- a desert national monument and an Indian reservation. The only way you would ever see one of those signs is on a hike or off-road excursion. There is a reason the drug smugglers and human smugglers prefer that region -- precisely because it is so empty of settlements and so difficult to patrol. This problem has been decades in the making -- a problem exacerbated by Republican administrations who gave amnesty and otherwise looked the other way because "cheap labor is good for business" -- and now that we finally have an administration that is deporting more illegals than ever before, and has increased boots on the ground at the border, all you can say is "shame on you Mr. president"? You really should educate yourself before posting misinformed opinions.

Ignoring all the fools who want to somehow make this a political issue, I'll say this: the war on drugs has caused this mess in the first place, and we are the country that gave these criminals their guns. So, having admitted that we screwed up, where do we go from here? I have a few suggestions.

1) Legalize the drugs and set up a government agency to produce them. Not Big PHARMA, more on that in a second. I don't say legalize them because I use them, because I don't, and in most cases, due to my own weird brain chemistry, can't. I know it will cause a spike in addiction in the U.S., at least temporarily. That's the price we have to pay.

2) Make it illegal to grow or produce any drugs outside what the government controls, in every state. That may seem redundant, and a part of the war on drugs, but it's not really. The reason will follow.

3) Most people don't know this, but the sole contribution that Reagan had on the fall of the Soviet Union was the arms race. We out-spent Russia, and that went a long way to destabilizing the government there. This will be the reverse. The government makes the drugs available everywhere, always underselling any street value. This is a price-war, so independent growers/producers would destabilize the effort.

4) Station troops returning from Afghanistan in hot zones as a precaution.

5) Finally, buy any crops we can get our hands on directly from the farmers. This is just to let more air out of the balloon, and won't work in most cases. It's been suggested for years that we just pay the farmers for their crops. In theory, that sounds good, but the profit for the farmers is short lived if the cartel shoots them the next day for selling their product. Most people leave that out of the logic.

In the end, we put the cartels out of business by cutting the price of product so that everyone gets what they want from the government. In the meantime, we beef up the security along the boarder. I have no problem with migrant workers, but I also have no problem with shooting at drug dealers on sight. In the end, we increase and heavily tax the drugs we sell, having created a safer boarder and put the cartels in the poor house. Add to it rehab programs and informational commercials, and, in a generation, we bring use down, while keeping the product safe, and putting all the money into the government.

Everyone wants to blame the Mexicans for this problem. It's foolish. WE are the consumers. WE gave them the guns. WE made it into big business with the war on drugs. It's OUR fault, and WE need to fix it.

The painful irony is that we blame the cartels for making life bad, but excuse our own corporations for essentially the same behavior, and in both cases, the people want to spend less to have a smaller government, but they want that same underfunded government to fix the problems. I never thought I'd see the day when Americans were so bad at adding and subtracting.

I like your ideas, but unfortunately the drug war is a political issue, and the government has much to be gained by perpetuating it...even if that means allowing the Mexican cartels to thrive...not to mention the Afghan opium lords, whose fields have been protected by our our own brave military men and women.

But for what it's worth, the border states aren't exactly burning. It's business as usual, except for these occasional media stories about some rancher who feels unsafe...just like he has felt for the last 10 or 15 years. Not exactly newsworthy...just a reminder of a long-standing problem.

I don't know; much of the military - particularly the U.S. Marines in which my husband currently serves - are visibly Latino. Like Islamic terrorists, Latino drug cartels are the biggest murderers of their own people. Since my husband's been a recruiter, we often hear of boys going back home to LA or further south, being identified by their physical features, and killed because they're suspected of belonging to a rival gang. There are just as many millions being made in these markets, and they're much, MUCH more difficult to track. It's very sad, but maybe the only way is to open up America to legal immigration like Angel and Ellis Island were, every five years, with doctors on hand, and have a quota in mind to stabilize the growth and productivity of our population, and if you don't get and keep a job here, you have 6 months to leave. Anyone overstaying will be arrested, deported, and shot if they try to re-enter, their children taken away by the State. We would happily adopt any of those children, and many families who can't conceive would also. Anyone trying to scale the wall, shot. But at least if it's legal, regulated and taxed, then the people who use it will also pay for the privilege to do so, the same as with cigarettes, cigars, alcohol and prescription drugs. Are they legal? Yes. Do they get abused? Yes. But they're all taxed. And if anyone complains their cigarette tax is too high, there's not a lot of people feeling much sympathy these days. As far as the article goes.... This is just an old fart that is being extremely over dramatic about things. Considering the geography he's probably one of those people that you wouldn't want your car to break down near his area and be forced to ask to use the telephone if you don't have reception. I used to live in Texas and I've met plenty of people that claim they wouldn't hesitate to shoot someone on there property without knowing the details of why they were there.

Be careful, you don't want people to get confused with facts. We Americans love our courts, our police and our prisons, and most of all, we love crime. We love to watch TV shows about crime, we love knowing that our nation has more criminals than any other, and we love seeing our neighbors get locked up, because deep down, it is thrilling to know that our neighbors are bad guys who deserve to get locked up.

It would ruin our entire image of law enforcement and good guys vs. bad guys if people understood that most crimes are drug-related, and that most drug arrests are for simple possession of marijuana. We want to think of our prisons as being full of murderers, rapists and pedophiles -- not just a bunch of ordinary people who got caught with some weed.

I think that the best way to solve this problem is through force. While it would take many more reasources to brotect this large border than the DMZ in Korea we certainly have the capability. Are we not proud of having one of the most powerful militaries in the world? We have 45,000 troops coming back from Iraq, those that stayh enlisted could go towards this. Is this real danger not more important than what goes on in afgahnistan? It is true that the terroorists are for the most part based in countries like that, but before we deal with potential threats we should deal with the real threat on our border where our fellow citizens live in fear, not poverty, or unhappiness, but true fear of a foriegn power.
