We are tired of those who demand more and more government and then complain that it's too corrupt. Well, duh! Government is inherently corrupt. And government dependence is inherently corrupting. That is why we should have a limited government.
People complain that corporations are buying political influence. Well ask yourselves, would they be able to buy it if it wasn't for sale? And would they need to buy it if government regulations were applied equally instead of giving breaks to some and not others, or penalizing some and not others?

I'm confused, why haven't the occupy group spread pepper spray amongst its group and when the police use it, you pepper spray the police. Seems to me if they can use it so can you. The bottom line in this whole situation is that people do have the right to protest, but not the right to turn a public park into a shantytown. If nothing was said, inside of six months EVERY park would become home for a contingent of "protesters"; you can bet the rent on it...
This is really important for all Law Enforcement to read: All three branches of our government, the Military, all Law Enforcement, all Heads of the States, all federal employees are requiredto take an Oath to support and defend the US Constitution and NOT an individual leader, ruler, office, or entity.
If you forgot what the Oath was you were required to take said: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
Notice that protecting the US Constitution is listed as the very first thing you are to protect above the duties of your job. A lot do not realize that by not protecting the US Constitution they are assisting the Domestic Enemies within our government, our country with destroying our nation from within.

The Founding Fathers recognized that a citizen can become a domestic enemy of our country. They even took it a step further, they understood the possibility of a political leader, a soldier, an officer in the military, or even the President could become an enemy of the Constitution.
To some degree, our country and our Constitution have been under assault, domestically, for decades. It appears the progression of the attack has escalated over time to even include a total disregard of the law of the land.
We currently have elected officials who have taken the above oath and yet want to get rid of the protections the Constitution provides to the people. We have those in Congress who have stretched the meaning of certain phrases of the "living document" so that they no longer resemble the written word.
Obama has stated that the Constitution is a "document of negative liberties." What perspective is he looking at the Constitution from, in order to have that opinion? The Bill of Rights is not a list of negative liberties to each of us, but a list of stated restrictions upon the federal government. The "Rights" do not restrict you and me, they limit what the politicians and bureaucrats do to or against us.
In order to view the Bill of Rights as "negative liberties", Obama and his administration would have to be seeing them from the viewpoint of how they limit what they can do to the people.
With adversaries to the Constitution within the highest levels of the three branches of our government, what are we to do? What are the sworn defenders (Law Enforcement and the Military) to do? At what point is non-political action necessary? If there was never intended to be action to defend the Constitution from those who are domestically attempting to destroy its power and authority, why would each oath require that?

I don't think pepper spraying the police would have much of an effect anyway. If you watched the video, you would notice that the police are all wearing plastic face guards. You would not be able to get the pepper spray into their eyes. Maybe a better tactic would be for the protestors to also be equipped with plastic face guards and maybe gas masks as well. It would be more equal that way. You might want to throw in some bullet-proof vests for the demonstrators, too.

This is a breakdown in Police Leadership. The protesters have the right to exercise their 1st amendment rights. This was not a situation where they were sitting in the middle of a busy highway, or blocking entrance to facilities. The Chief of Police needs to explain with certainty...not guessing...why the use of force was needed if the students didn't fit above. By and large the protests nationwide have been largely non-violent unless Police intervene with force. There has been a complete lack a dialog with the protesters at the majority of sites where violence has erupted. Look at Madison Wi, or Seattle for good examples of crowd control and peaceful demonstration. It can be done, and it needs to be done in this manner.

All my recent observations of the "protesters", would lead most to believe that they are in fact NOT protesters at all, but "campers". "Protesting" is one thing, but "quasi-camping" is just wrong!! brenda @1.19, some places it is a felony to strike a uniformed police officer in the preformance of their job , and thats exactly what these guys were doing , agree with it or not .there is also laws against others interfering as well , i know you have heard of people getting busted for mouthing off to an officer that was busting their friend ?n thats what they get busted for , interference .
brenda , considering what tools the police do have at their disposal , personally I think this particula tool , the spray , lowered the risk of personal injury to the protesters , the way the protesters were intertwined , and locked ridgid , i can envision a lot more broken bones if the spray wasnt used and physically peeling people apart that didnt want to come apart , overzealousness on both sides could have ended up worse . About the only tool I havent seen used yet in any of these protests? water trucks , not nessisarily high pressure fire hoses or water cannons , but water mist , and streams , with the weather , , wet down a protester in even 60 degree weather at night ? and they get cold .whats the forcasts in the protest zones for temps ? that could be used next and isnt life threatening , now if they stay out in the cold when their wet ....

There are many similarities between the original Sons of Liberty and other American Revolution era protesters and what the OWS people are doing now, including civil disobedience (sorry folks if you don't like hearing that, but it's true).
For example ... what was the original Tea Party? It was (in British eyes, the legitimate government at the time) a group of thugs who dressed up and destroyed valuable property. In other words, a crime.

@JaneEco- Thank you for the reminder of what our country was supposed to stand for. I personally post the First and Fourth amendment much more often than should be necessary. Unfortunately it seems as though those who disparage OWS and their like compatriots do not know how to read, instead preferring to listen to uber conservative talking heads and watching corporate media to be told what their opinions should be. So here is yet another refresher:

The police game them until 3pm Friday to remove the tents. The Protesters refused and the Police had to forcibly remove the tents. This is not an issue of allowing dissent, this is about the protesters refusal to abide by the single rule regarding having a camp in that quad.

No this is what our country is coming too with people tired of being told what to do by our government. The Government had one purpose and that was to protect the USA, to protect us , and make sure our rights are kept.
The sole purpose of government, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, is to secure our unalienable rights given us by our Creator. When Government grows beyond this scope, it is usurpation, and liberty is compromised.

What we need to do now is get people to the realization that the REAL fight is us vs. them. I believe some are coming down a little too hard on the OWS people. Although there will always be exceptions with any generality, most of the unemployed want to work, and don't expect to get free stuff. The economic reality has always been a range, and over the last 30 years the range has moved toward fewer jobs, lower buying power in the ones that remain, and college tuition that's in the stratosphere. A good number of today's elderly "self-made men" wouldn't be able to do it, under today's grim reality. And it's going to get worse, not better, in spite of GOP claims that all we need to do is cut taxes for the wealthy.
The students were given multiple warnings to leave the premises and that if they did not, they would be forcibly removed. Yes, pepper-spraying the students may have been excessive, but does anybody have a better idea for the police to use when asking people to leave? Batons? Rubber bullets? Tear Gas? Real bullets? Of all the possible means to forcibly remove a bunch of people (who have been warned to leave or risk physical harm), pepper-spray is probably the best option.
Also, one has to realize that the students had no intention of leaving. They linked arms and refused to move even after multiple warnings. I am sure most of the students knew that violence against them was inevitable and that was their plan: to get these images to the public.
Let us also not forget that the police did not prevent students from protesting. Students are allowed to protest as much as they want, but they are not allowed to camp out. There is a difference. The freedom of speech has not been trampled upon because the freedom to protest has not been taken away.
The most effective way to "clarify" one's opinion on the police's role would be to exclude any support for defending their jobs. Make it a policy to exclude the police forces budget from any efforts involving opposition to civil servants downsizing. It is rather insulting that they are brutalizing the very people that are struggling to defend them and their jobs. The first cuts for all municipal budgets needs to be the SWINES' troft.

Removing the tents I can understand, now, explain how casually walking up to the protesters sitting on the ground and pepper spraying them in the face helps them remove some tents they aren't even in?

I also think most of them have got things backwards - they should be protesting against big federal government, not "wall street". Seems to me it was the feds who bailed out wall street. And except for AIG, wall street has paid back their bailout - only the two unregulated gov mortgage companies are still getting more bailout.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because the Congress created that problem. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. The Speaker of the House is the leader of the majority party. The Speaker and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red. If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ, it’s because they want them in IRAQ
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

I've got news for you, as a person who has actually been there in person, you know like as in Real Life. Yes, some of the type of people you have judged OWS to be totally made up of exist. However the majority of those that I met there were working class family persons, young professional and union workers; 80% had jobs and were attending afterwards or taking vacation days to attend. I don't know where those of you who spout this vitriol that you take as scripture get it from. I can say that I have been to a couple of "Conservative" sites and from the comments I've read there would rather spend my time in the company of even some of the worst of OWS. Nowhere have I seen so many threats of violence, suggestions of using humans as "target practice", because it would be cheaper than "going to the range" and on and on and on.

Thank you! I work in Davis and I also know these kids were not protesting peacefully. UC Davis absolutely allows peaceful protesting. It happens daily on campus and the students have every right to speak their mind without disruption. This happened because they were nicely warned several times over the course of two days and they refused to listen to law enforcement and campus officials. I believe this was the whole point of their protest, to disobey and cause physical removal which would be videoed and broadcast. When they were issued reminders of the campus policy they wadded them up and threw them all over the quad (real sustainable...) and hurled insults at innocent campus employees just doing their job.

These students were not just protesting. They were breaking the law...whether you like it or not, that's what they were doing. No one ever said they were not allowed to protest. They were told they were not allowed to camp in the middle of the quad on a college campus and they ignored it. The police had, and have, every right to use non-lethal methods, including pepper spray, to disrupt and arrest people who are breaking the law. What if I decided to stage my own Occupy protest in your living room? Does the fact that I'm protesting mean that I should be allowed to do so, with complete disregard for the law? No. And all of you who say the police acted out-of-hand would also be the first to call 911 and have me arrested if I staged a "camp out protest" in your house or on your lawn. And I seriously doubt you would be all up in arms if the police pepper sprayed me during my arrest. There is no difference, whatsoever. Protesting is one thing; and it is protected under the constitution (within reason, in most places you need a permit to do so). However, if you think your right to eat granola, grow nasty dreadlocks, and complain about corporate America while you are getting a useless degree in Art History at an expensive university that Mommy and Daddy are paying for (with money they earned, no doubt, as shills of the corporate boogie-man) supercedes the laws of this land and the constitution, then you are sadly mistaken.

Actually, I suspect that it wasn't "the law". It was likely a pronouncement from the Pres of the University--AFTER the students arrived. Last time I checked, an individual, no matter their title can proclaim anything and have it enforced as "the law". Secondly, as the Judge in Memphis (I think) stated, you can't change the "law" or whatever after the protesting began and then arrest people. He bravely ordered the protestors freed, ordered the cops to cease and desist, and then watched as the cops went ahead with their arrests three more times. I haven't heard of the outcome of that, though.

Ryan Waller, do you know what a domestic enemy of the USA is? Domestic enemies pursue legislation, programs against the powers of the US Constitution. They work on destroying and weakening the Rights of the People guaranteed by the Constitution. Plus they create laws, amendments, etc that goes against the restraint on the three branches of our government by the Constitution.

The supreme court has in previous cases ruled that camping out in a location as part of a protest is expressive behavior protected by the first amendment. Specifically camping out on the sidewalks of NYC I believe to protest rent increases. The tearing down of the occupy camps could therefore easily be argued as being a breach of the first amendment rights of the protesters.
The thing is that we do have a right to free speech, and we should be able to voice ourselves where every and when ever we choose to. We just did that in Madison, WI today. We had a Recall Rally against Gov Walker, estimated about 40,000 people, non-violent, and in just 5 days we collected 100,000 signatures to recall him. This has taken a lot hard work and very dedicated people, it has been almost a year we have been fighting him and his puppets, but we will prevail in the end. OSW can do this too, most are peaceful demonstrators, and some are not, that is just the way it is. Just like the TeaParty they were mostly peaceful, but they too also had some who were not.
The country does not belong to you, it belong to us. No, you are not free to urinate on us, put a tent in our yard, or yell "fire" in a crowded theater. You are, however, free to learn a trade, get a lawful employment, and vote for whoever you like. If this is not good enough for you, try some other country.

There's not a single civil rights law that didn't happen without the exercise of free speech. Voting alone isn't enough. You have to be heard and you have to change minds. You can't just vote and expect it will be all roses. It just doesn't work that way. There's a reason why the Citizen's United case focused on money as speech, and it had absolutely nothing to do with voting.

FYI you don't need a permit for every location to protest. I'm pretty sure the students have a right to be on their campus without one. And in case you missed it the school gave them permission. Do you read? can you read?

You're talking about the OWS people, right? I mean, there have been numerous sexual assaults and even a couple of murders at these "peaceful" protests.
...kinda funny...but, in reality a bit harsh perhaps...the students & OWS folks don't really have a 'right' to camp where the law or same said ordinance doesn't allow camping...and yet several cities have done their 'best' to accommodate their behavior and such...I prefer that the police dressed to their best in their riot gear could have made themselves and their actions to disperse the 'crowd' by showing up in regular dress (at least many of them with the riot gear protecting their behinds) and just dismantle the campsite...but; just like so many other government employees...be they mayors, congressmen/women, or the like...they'd not even think to stoop so low as to actually do the work that needs to be done as it isn't in their union handbook as part of what they're required to do...so, it's "not my job" is their mantra...

Most people don't realize this but most police officers are narcissistic human beings that have a thirst for power over others. They feel that they have the right to decide the outcome of a situation because of their authority and they are always right. But, the problem with power is it takes a humble man or woman to use it wisely. These officers were not humble and only acted to show their "authority" over the masses. This happens all the time in American cities and these officers are overlooked because they are "policemen and women." Truth be known many of these individuals have psychiatric disease and other issues and should not be carrying a gun or a badge.

It's pretty important to realize that the Three Branches of our Government, the Military, all Law Enforcement, all Heads of the States, all federal employees are required to take an Oath to support and defend the Constitution and not an individual leader, ruler, office, or entity.
Domestic enemies pursue legislation, programs against the powers of the US Constitution. They work on destroying and weakening the Rights of the People guaranteed by the Constitution. Plus they create laws, amendments, etc that goes against the restraint on the three branches of our government by the Constitution.
Some questions you and the law enforcement should be asking themselves about: With adversaries to the Constitution within the highest levels of our government, what is to be done?
What are the sworn defenders (police and military) to do?
At what point is non-political action necessary?
If there was never intended to be action to defend the Constitution from those who are domestically attempting to destroy its power and authority, why would each oath require such?
By the way there are a lot of law enforcement agencies who have realized that we have a government with domestic enemies within all three branches. That the police are likely to be used against the populace to stop those who are trying to save this nation, our Constitution, and our way of life and they disagree.

Umm... as UC is a state run institution and recieves federal money, this makes it a public place. Everyone that pays taxes owns this place. They have every right to protest a public place. If not a public place to protest then where?... In private? Because that makes soo much sense.
Has no one considered WHY the campus policy restricts camping on grounds overnight? - The Bathrooms are locked - There is no ongoing security to ensure safety on all 5,000 acres - Camping damages grassy areas, if it were allowed the campus would have to spend millions fixing it and cleaning up their mess - The campus is not a KOA. If the policy were revoked than anyone could do it. Including local bums. These kids were told they could protest during the day, every day if they wanted to. They were only told they could not camp overnight. Their decision to stay would mean thousands of dollars spent on 24 hour security to ensure their safety. Because you know if one of them got hurt at 3am their parents would sue the school. This was a no-win situation cause by the protesters.

Do you think the LA riots occurred because the police were soft on the rioters. These were college students. I agree, the protest should stop at night and resume each morning, but the pepper spray was excessive and unnecessary. If you were double-parked, would you want to be pepper sprayed, maybe catch some mace for jaywalking. Speeding ticket... and a dose of pepper spray. They should have just picked them up and arrested them, if it was necessary.

First of all, I did not say all police officers had psychiatric issues but many. Of note, police officers are suppose to follow the same laws as you and I and are sworn to "protect and serve." I did not see those students being protected. I also did not see any service they provided. There was plenty of room for others to walk around them. The also were not causing any problem to other students studying or doing what it is they want to do. There was simply no reason to "attack" albeit with pepper spray those individuals that are demonstrating their right to protest and free speech.
I dare to ask do you have a "police officer" in your family? If so, that may be the reason you are so upset. Also, if you chose to be a police officer then you understand the risks of possibly being "shot, killed, etc..." That was your choice. Although I don't agree with all your accolades for the police I learned a long time ago they're a necessary evil. True their job is to protect you and there are some who will run in the direction of the shots fired to help.
But as you say they are human and not perfect. Unfortunately there are enough bad cops out there (power hungry, chips on their shoulders, w/psych issues etc.) that make the good guys look bad in general. It's a shame but a reality of life and it always has been.
I guess my point is, some use the excuse of having to deal with protesting students and such as reason enough to exceed their authority. In this case the students were asked to remove the tents. 1. They do not have the right to camp out on university grounds. So lets go by the general law of the land concept. Had there not been a protest, would the police, campus or otherwise have let them stay there with their tents?
If the answer is yes! The police (law or not) over stepped the law of the land by using pepper spray. They should have found a better method rather than force.
If the answer is NO! Then the students were out of order no matter how non-violent the protest and forced the police to take a tactical position. They had to remove the students for breaking the law. Strategy, incapacitate them first; then remove them. By doing so you eliminate any violent scuffles which could have ignited the crowd and then all hell would have broken loose and who knows how many people could have been seriously hurt.
In the end...the root of this cause lies in OUR government...VOTE OUT ALL DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS. VOTE AMERICA< VOTE AMERICAN>>>>GRASS ROOTS PASS IT ON.

The bottom line in this whole situation is that people do have the right to protest, but not the right to turn a public park into a shantytown. If nothing was said, inside of six months EVERY park would become home for a contingent of "protesters"; you can bet the rent on it...

Notice that protecting the US Constitution is listed as the very first thing you are to protect above the duties of your job. I don't think pepper spraying the police would have much of an effect anyway. If you watched the video, you would notice that the police are all wearing plastic face guards. You would not be able to get the pepper spray into their eyes. Maybe a better tactic would be for the protestors to also be equipped with plastic face guards and maybe gas masks as well. It would be more equal that way. You might want to throw in some bullet-proof vests for the demonstrators, too.

This is a breakdown in Police Leadership. The protesters have the right to exercise their 1st amendment rights. This was not a situation where they were sitting in the middle of a busy highway, or blocking entrance to facilities. The Chief of Police needs to explain with certainty...not guessing...why the use of force was needed if the students didn't fit above. By and large the protests nationwide have been largely non-violent unless Police intervene with force. There has been a complete lack a dialog with the protesters at the majority of sites where violence has erupted. Look at Madison Wi, or Seattle for good examples of crowd control and peaceful demonstration. It can be done, and it needs to be done in this manner.

brenda , considering what tools the police do have at their disposal , personally I think this particula tool , the spray , lowered the risk of personal injury to the protesters , the way the protesters were intertwined , and locked ridgid , i can envision a lot more broken bones if the spray wasnt used and physically peeling people apart that didnt want to come apart , overzealousness on both sides could have ended up worse . About the only tool I havent seen used yet in any of these protests? water trucks , not nessisarily high pressure fire hoses or water cannons , but water mist , and streams , with the weather , , wet down a protester in even 60 degree weather at night ? and they get cold .whats the forcasts in the protest zones for temps ? that could be used next and isnt life threatening , now if they stay out in the cold when their wet ....

There are many similarities between the original Sons of Liberty and other American Revolution era protesters and what the OWS people are doing now, including civil disobedience (sorry folks if you don't like hearing that, but it's true).
For example ... what was the original Tea Party? It was (in British eyes, the legitimate government at the time) a group of thugs who dressed up and destroyed valuable property. In other words, a crime.

Unfortunately it seems as though those who disparage OWS and their like compatriots do not know how to read, instead preferring to listen to uber conservative talking heads and watching corporate media to be told what their opinions should be. I do find some seriously ironic humor in comments by those who complain that OWS hasn't the right to protest and OCCUPY because it inconveniences others. I guess someone needs to explain to them that revolution is often inconvenient.
The police are not harassing the protesters. The article points out that UC Davis officials said that the protesters can stay in the quad as long as they want, but they cannot camp there. The police game them until 3pm Friday to remove the tents. The Protesters refused and the Police had to forcibly remove the tents. This is not an issue of allowing dissent, this is about the protesters refusal to abide by the single rule regarding having a camp in that quad.
No this is what our country is coming too with people tired of being told what to do by our government. The Government had one purpose and that was to protect the USA, to protect us , and make sure our rights are kept.
The sole purpose of government, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, is to secure our unalienable rights given us by our Creator. When Government grows beyond this scope, it is usurpation, and liberty is compromised.
Your never going to see a harmony in this world or even in this country. Too much greed, to many self centered people.

I believe some are coming down a little too hard on the OWS people. Although there will always be exceptions with any generality, most of the unemployed want to work, and don't expect to get free stuff. The economic reality has always been a range, and over the last 30 years the range has moved toward fewer jobs, lower buying power in the ones that remain, and college tuition that's in the stratosphere. A good number of today's elderly "self-made men" wouldn't be able to do it, under today's grim reality. And it's going to get worse, not better, in spite of GOP claims that all we need to do is cut taxes for the wealthy.
The students were given multiple warnings to leave the premises and that if they did not, they would be forcibly removed. Yes, pepper-spraying the students may have been excessive, but does anybody have a better idea for the police to use when asking people to leave? Batons? Rubber bullets? Tear Gas? Real bullets? Of all the possible means to forcibly remove a bunch of people (who have been warned to leave or risk physical harm), pepper-spray is probably the best option.
Also, one has to realize that the students had no intention of leaving. They linked arms and refused to move even after multiple warnings. I am sure most of the students knew that violence against them was inevitable and that was their plan: to get these images to the public.
Let us also not forget that the police did not prevent students from protesting. Students are allowed to protest as much as they want, but they are not allowed to camp out. There is a difference. The freedom of speech has not been trampled upon because the freedom to protest has not been taken away.

The most effective way to "clarify" one's opinion on the police's role would be to exclude any support for defending their jobs. Make it a policy to exclude the police forces budget from any efforts involving opposition to civil servants downsizing. It is rather insulting that they are brutalizing the very people that are struggling to defend them and their jobs. The first cuts for all municipal budgets needs to be the SWINES' troft.
Removing the tents I can understand, now, explain how casually walking up to the protesters sitting on the ground and pepper spraying them in the face helps them remove some tents they aren't even in?

Hahaha.... From what I understand, all of the hippies in the 60's had parents too. Contrary to popular myth, they did not blossom out of the ground after a particularly heavy rainstorm in 1959. Additionally, college campuses were awash with hippies-- Timothy Leary was a professor, for god's sake.

It is insensitive, rude, mean, and hurtful as the students were peacefully protesting, and their first amendment rights give them the freedom of speech. I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because the Congress created that problem. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. The Speaker of the House is the leader of the majority party. The Speaker and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ, it’s because they want them in IRAQ
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

I've got news for you, as a person who has actually been there in person, you know like as in Real Life. Yes, some of the type of people you have judged OWS to be totally made up of exist. However the majority of those that I met there were working class family persons, young professional and union workers; 80% had jobs and were attending afterwards or taking vacation days to attend. I don't know where those of you who spout this vitriol that you take as scripture get it from. I can say that I have been to a couple of "Conservative" sites and from the comments I've read there would rather spend my time in the company of even some of the worst of OWS. Nowhere have I seen so many threats of violence, suggestions of using humans as "target practice", because it would be cheaper than "going to the range" and on and on and on.

Thank you! I work in Davis and I also know these kids were not protesting peacefully. UC Davis absolutely allows peaceful protesting. It happens daily on campus and the students have every right to speak their mind without disruption. This happened because they were nicely warned several times over the course of two days and they refused to listen to law enforcement and campus officials. I believe this was the whole point of their protest, to disobey and cause physical removal which would be videoed and broadcast. When they were issued reminders of the campus policy they wadded them up and threw them all over the quad (real sustainable...) and hurled insults at innocent campus employees just doing their job.
I do not take the medication that that "stalwart" of the Right Wing, Rush Limbaugh takes - the Addicting Narcotic Oxycontin.

Look up the Use Of Force model. If you are resistant(active) police can and will use pepper spray... It's not excessive force if you are told to disperse by the owners of the property and you refuse to do so.

Somewhere else in your comments you called the students communists, but your words suggest to me that you believe this is a police state. This is America, and America was founded on patriots disobeying authority. These students were not just protesting. They were breaking the law...whether you like it or not, that's what they were doing. No one ever said they were not allowed to protest. They were told they were not allowed to camp in the middle of the quad on a college campus and they ignored it. The police had, and have, every right to use non-lethal methods, including pepper spray, to disrupt and arrest people who are breaking the law. What if I decided to stage my own Occupy protest in your living room? Does the fact that I'm protesting mean that I should be allowed to do so, with complete disregard for the law? No. And all of you who say the police acted out-of-hand would also be the first to call 911 and have me arrested if I staged a "camp out protest" in your house or on your lawn. And I seriously doubt you would be all up in arms if the police pepper sprayed me during my arrest. There is no difference, whatsoever. Protesting is one thing; and it is protected under the constitution (within reason, in most places you need a permit to do so). However, if you think your right to eat granola, grow nasty dreadlocks, and complain about corporate America while you are getting a useless degree in Art History at an expensive university that Mommy and Daddy are paying for (with money they earned, no doubt, as shills of the corporate boogie-man) supercedes the laws of this land and the constitution, then you are sadly mistaken.

Actually, I suspect that it wasn't "the law". It was likely a pronouncement from the Pres of the University--AFTER the students arrived. Last time I checked, an individual, no matter their title can proclaim anything and have it enforced as "the law". Secondly, as the Judge in Memphis (I think) stated, you can't change the "law" or whatever after the protesting began and then arrest people. He bravely ordered the protestors freed, ordered the cops to cease and desist, and then watched as the cops went ahead with their arrests three more times. I haven't heard of the outcome of that, though.

The supreme court has in previous cases ruled that camping out in a location as part of a protest is expressive behavior protected by the first amendment. Specifically camping out on the sidewalks of NYC I believe to protest rent increases. The tearing down of the occupy camps could therefore easily be argued as being a breach of the first amendment rights of the protesters.

The thing is that we do have a right to free speech, and we should be able to voice ourselves where every and when ever we choose to. We just did that in Madison, WI today. We had a Recall Rally against Gov Walker, estimated about 40,000 people, non-violent, and in just 5 days we collected 100,000 signatures to recall him. This has taken a lot hard work and very dedicated people, it has been almost a year we have been fighting him and his puppets, but we will prevail in the end. OSW can do this too, most are peaceful demonstrators, and some are not, that is just the way it is. Just like the TeaParty they were mostly peaceful, but they too also had some who were not.
The country does not belong to you, it belong to us. No, you are not free to urinate on us, put a tent in our yard, or yell "fire" in a crowded theater. You are, however, free to learn a trade, get a lawful employment, and vote for whoever you like. If this is not good enough for you, try some other country.
And you are free to watch a tv station that does not fill your head full of hate and lies and to read and learn how to protect your own best interest.

There's not a single civil rights law that didn't happen without the exercise of free speech. Voting alone isn't enough. You have to be heard and you have to change minds. You can't just vote and expect it will be all roses. It just doesn't work that way. There's a reason why the Citizen's United case focused on money as speech, and it had absolutely nothing to do with voting.

Umm... as UC is a state run institution and recieves federal money, this makes it a public place. Everyone that pays taxes owns this place. They have every right to protest a public place. If not a public place to protest then where?... In private? Because that makes soo much sense.
Has no one considered WHY the campus policy restricts camping on grounds overnight? - The Bathrooms are locked - There is no ongoing security to ensure safety on all 5,000 acres - Camping damages grassy areas, if it were allowed the campus would have to spend millions fixing it and cleaning up their mess - The campus is not a KOA. If the policy were revoked than anyone could do it. Including local bums. These kids were told they could protest during the day, every day if they wanted to. They were only told they could not camp overnight. Their decision to stay would mean thousands of dollars spent on 24 hour security to ensure their safety. Because you know if one of them got hurt at 3am their parents would sue the school. This was a no-win situation cause by the protesters.

Do you think the LA riots occurred because the police were soft on the rioters. These were college students. I agree, the protest should stop at night and resume each morning, but the pepper spray was excessive and unnecessary. If you were double-parked, would you want to be pepper sprayed, maybe catch some mace for jaywalking. Speeding ticket... and a dose of pepper spray. They should have just picked them up and arrested them, if it was necessary.

This is what happens when we have domestic enemies within all three branches of our government.

Currently we have elected officials who have taken the required oath and yet are working to get rid of the protections the Constitution provides to the people. We have those in Congress who have stretched the meaning of certain phrases of the "living document" so that they no longer resemble the written word.
Obama himself has stated that the Constitution is a "document of negative liberties." What perspective is he looking at the Constitution from, in order to have that opinion? The Bill of Rights is not a list of negative liberties to each of us, but a list of stated restrictions upon the federal government. The Bill of Rights do not restrict you and me, they restrict what the politicians and bureaucrats can do to or against us.

First of all, I did not say all police officers had psychiatric issues but many. Of note, police officers are suppose to follow the same laws as you and I and are sworn to "protect and serve." I did not see those students being protected. I also did not see any service they provided. There was plenty of room for others to walk around them. The also were not causing any problem to other students studying or doing what it is they want to do. There was simply no reason to "attack" albeit with pepper spray those individuals that are demonstrating their right to protest and free speech.
I dare to ask do you have a "police officer" in your family? If so, that may be the reason you are so upset. Also, if you chose to be a police officer then you understand the risks of possibly being "shot, killed, etc..." That was your choice. I am not going to think you are any better than anyone else just because you chose that profession. Your profession does not make you the man or woman you are, your actions do. Although I don't agree with all your accolades for the police I learned a long time ago they're a necessary evil. True their job is to protect you and there are some who will run in the direction of the shots fired to help.
But as you say they are human and not perfect. Unfortunately there are enough bad cops out there (power hungry, chips on their shoulders, w/psych issues etc.) that make the good guys look bad in general. It's a shame but a reality of life and it always has been.
I guess my point is, some use the excuse of having to deal with protesting students and such as reason enough to exceed their authority. In this case the students were asked to remove the tents. 1. They do not have the right to camp out on university grounds. So lets go by the general law of the land concept. Had there not been a protest, would the police, campus or otherwise have let them stay there with their tents?
If the answer is yes! The police (law or not) over stepped the law of the land by using pepper spray. They should have found a better method rather than force.
If the answer is NO! Then the students were out of order no matter how non-violent the protest and forced the police to take a tactical position. They had to remove the students for breaking the law. Strategy, incapacitate them first; then remove them. By doing so you eliminate any violent scuffles which could have ignited the crowd and then all hell would have broken loose and who knows how many people could have been seriously hurt.
In the end...the root of this cause lies in OUR government...VOTE OUT ALL DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS. VOTE AMERICA< VOTE AMERICAN>>>>GRASS ROOTS PASS IT ON.
Perhaps we can vote in people who won't vote party lines instead of voting for bills that help AMERICA and AMERICANS.
