Occupy organizers called for flash mobs, students strikes, rallies and musicals around the world to celebrate the anti-capitalist movement's two-month anniversary Thursday.
If they do not agree on one or two things to accomplish with the occupying -besides creating chaos and disrorder- the only thing that they are going to accomplish is to get arrested.
They do have a goal, it's to destroy capitalism. The problem is that end goal is not broadly popular. Most of us realize that the liberty of being able to freely exchange goods and services with one another is exactly what enables us to work and on merit earn our own prosperity. Take that away and all you do is generate misery and suffering. So, their intended chaos, violence, and anarchy might be an attempt to further their ultimate goal, but it doesn't mean it buys them support.
I am so amazed by this. Although I vehemently support the cause, these politicians just sit back and laugh knowing NOTHING will change. They just figure they'll let them protest all they want, some even encourage it ( for political gain). Until we do something more drastic and do it collectively, nothing will change
If the OWS crowd prevents a small business owner from serving customers, prevents an everyday person from getting to work, destroys private property, or causes the other law abiding citizens to pay more of their hard earned money to clean up after them, they are in the wrong.
If you are for the 99%, stop taking away their incomes. Stop hurting them. Go to Washington and camp on the front lawn of the White House. That is where the protest is needed.
Let em get arrested! There are hundreds of ne groes waiting in jail for suger-babies like these little mommy-boy punks. Let em get a dose of the REAL WORLD. Most of these locked up loons are bi and full of hate and envy for the crackers and can do their hate crime thing without much fear of repercussion.
When are they going to realize they do not actually represent the 99%. They should be arrested for false advertising. If they are going to waste public resources then they should be fined to cover those costs.
The OWS movement should refocus their efforts at an internet site where things from the major banks to boycott (any member of the Federal Reserve Bank would be a good place to start) by orchestrating a withdrawing of all funds. Additionally, to publish a list of all products from multinational corporations to avoid buying.
If you starve the beast of its' needed money to survive you will do far more damage than simply protesting in person.
Enough with these people already. Look they have had their 15 minutes of fame and they have made their hippy point.
I blame the Main Stream Media for keeping this so called paper revolution with a pulse. But we all know the mainstream media (Propaganda Arm of the Obama Administration) will never stop attacking capitalism.
I'm bringing a roll of quarters with me to work today. I hope these OWS fools are on my path because I will have so much fun letting my quarters fly into the air and watch the cockroaches scurry to scrum the "Free Money"...
Obama , Pelosi and the whole democratic party are supporting you what is your problem, if you want change , change all of them in election day, period. Be smart , you are losing ground and support every day, you are going in the wrong direction like this administration. But, first of all do pacific demonstrations, do not occupy public areas do not block streets , that disgust most people , have an adult mesage ,stay away from, union leaders, communist , socialist groups and don't receive money from Soros, they want to destroy our country.
No matter if you disagree with OWS protests, you have to admit that they are proving yet again that corporations have our country in the palm of their hands because they can get their corporate puppets and cops to do their bidding. For all those who keep promoting our constitution as what we live by have to see that the rights of the people are only adhered to if the American people do as they are told by the corporate people. We all know by now that if you have an issue with our government and want to protest then our constitution doesn't apply because the jack boot will be used by the cops and their corporate bosses. Proof, the cops are not being used to allow the American people to peaceably protest but the cops are being used by those puppets in power who the protesters are protesting about. Those in power are using and making up laws to put down the American voice. What needs to happen is, find away to stop paying taxes and for all Americans to take to the streets and start a civil disobedience campaign against our corrupt government. Anyone who can't see that our country has been taken over by corporate money and outside influences should stop ignoring the facts and burying your heads in the sand. If we as Americans don't do something now, we will be allowing our country to become another 3rd world country with 2 classes, the very rich and the very poor. I can only hope that we can unite as one voice and prevent our country from being sold to the highest bidder.
It is really funny that the so-called 99% is arguing against 99.9999999%. Take away capitalism in this country and who has all the power? That's right, the government. They don't like the thousands of corporations and businesses and the millions of owners who have input into the system. Yet, they are willing to turn things over to 270 people! Simply amazing!
We call upon the 99% to participate in a national day of direct action and celebration," said OccupyWallSt.org, which bills itself as the online resource for the movement that began in New York City's financial center and has spread throughout the United States and the world.
The 99% is telling you to go home and stop hurting the 99%. There is nothing about your little protest that merits celebration. You have achieved nothing except a general dislike for your irresponsible actions and your wish to destroy the very system, (Capitalism) that is paying the 99%'s wages.
Yes....the town green campers would prefer that the government ran more and more of everyone's lives...cater to people (while going broke) like they do in Europe (growing broke). The campers would like that !
I'm just shocked to see them finally admit that OWS is "anti-capitalist. In all the interviews I've seen, these people try to deny they are against capitalism.
So, if we now agree this is an anti-capitalist movement...how are we to take Polosi and Obama's statements of support? Polosi said, "thank GOD for this movement". I guess that means that Polosi is finally letting it be known that she is communist or at least a socialist.
No matter if you disagree with OWS protests, you have to admit that they are proving yet again that corporations have our country in the palm of their hands because they can get their corporate puppets and cops to do their bidding.
As I see it the Cops are doing the bidding of the Greater Community...providing protection, concerns of public sanitation, providing public areas where citizens can come and go without being accosted....
Proof, the cops are not being used to allow the American people to peaceably protest but the cops are being used by those puppets in power who the protesters are protesting about.
The Peaceful protest seemed to fade quite some time ago. Those who steal, destroy public and private property, accost the peaceful going to and from work or shopping, create unsanitary conditions because the will defecate where they eat and sleep, rape, murder etc. are worthy of police attention and well fines to absorb the damage they are doing.
Those in power are using and making up laws to put down the American voice. What needs to happen is, find away to stop paying taxes and for all Americans to take to the streets and start a civil disobedience campaign against our corrupt government.
Those in "Power" have not been the target of the Protests. As for paying Taxes...Our Government cannot perform it's function without some taxes...there in lies the problem...they don't want some they want much from those who actually do pay to support those who do not. I gladly pay taxes to support civil obedience and general civility. But if you happen to get your way and anarchy breaks out and the criminals think they rule...I will defend my home and my children with reasonable force. That is why "Americans" retain the "right" to arm themselves. It isn't the corrupt Government I worry about rather the depravity of the least of our society... those who steal, rape and murder with some self-determined impunity.
If the OWS crowd really wants to make a difference, they should be protesting in DC. Government makes the laws, so if you want to change the system you need to change the government.
I do agree there are inequities that need to be addressed, and that our politicians are too beholden to special interest groups (corporations, unions, etc.). But, telling the recipient of the special benefit to change isn't going to accomplish anything - you need to deal with the root cause, which is the laws created by our elected officials.
They didn't call themselves an anti-capitalist movement, the writer of the article did.
They do represent the 99% even if the 99% don't agree with them, or are just too stupid to agree with them.
The movement shined a light, and steered the general conversation in this country (and other countries around the world) in the right direction (which by and large is the opposite direction of the GOPTP).
Alot of people claiming rape and murder on these threads are the people you should stop listening to. The camps are mini-societies, and all societies suffer crimes. Most of the crimes committed at the camps were by police.
Anti-OWS, particularly the false conservative Douchebaggers, I think are FOS about really doing anything. Probably sitting their, fat fingered, and red piggy faced, with the extent of their rage being a little poo poo typing online.
It isn't that the point of criticizing our government is bad, it is that the Douchebaggers actually only criticize the part of government that they get told to by their priests. So a Douchebag face partier likes the police when they arrest OWS, but doesn't want to pay taxes. And the Douchebag piggies don't like big government, but blame the lack of oversight on banks on the government. A Fat faced douchebagger is against war in Libya when Obama supports it, and wants a war in Iran when he recommends diplomacy.
In other words, a DOUCHEBAG PARTY member is as much of a liar as any other red-faced hypocrite. And this is why there are no actually conservative candidates at the head of the Republican party. Because it isn't a conservative party anymore. It is a fan club of the pigs and their idiot followers.
If you really want people to take you seriously and have productive discussions that result in change, my suggestion is to not insult large blocks of people and focus on coherent, rational posts.
Also, just because someone expresses a different opinion from you on how to do something, doesn't mean they intend any form of malice. Sometimes very smart people look at the same set of data and draw significantly different conclusions. When that happens, both parties can have good, meaningful debates - if they are willing to clearly articulate their views and actually listen to opposing viewpoints.
OWS doesn't call themselves a whole lot of things. Seems they are just now getting to the point where they are discussing what the movements grievances are or if they are even going to have grievances....That sounds like a very disjointed social movement....we are angry but not going to give specifics...sort of like you have to pass the bill to know what is in it....In other countries that is a tactic the zealots and despots use to garner control.
Aw, Ron, I will give you the thumbs up for not being a regular Newsvine poster, and for that you deserve credit. But let me just point out that if you stick around here enough, you'll find that hyperbole gets you a lot farther than rational posting. Now, you may be above, that, but I'm not, nor are most of the other posters here. So, my hat's off too you, but I will continue to mock those who deserve it.
Also, one should always present a solution when presenting a demand. The solution should be real and obtainable, even if only baby-steps...kind of like "We want $100.00 in unmarked bills and a few extra port-o-potties and in return, we won't use granny as a pepper-spray shield."
That doesn't look like hundreds to me. It looks like 100 to me. Arrest them and put them in jail, they are keeping people from working and earning a living, which is what these people should be doing. They don't even know what they are protesting.
OWS is really not anti-capitalist. It does oppose corporations using their financial strength to control politicians, and so should everyone who is not engaged in such controlling
What’s that the one fellow said? “There is a schism between the rich and the poor and it's getting wider." Yes, and the gap will only increase so long as more of these idiots elect to live by handouts instead of getting jobs.
These fools think that if they’re successful in collapsing the capitalistic system the government will have no choice but to provide everything for them. After all, it’s certainly easier than actually having to work.
i think the majority of the people on hear have no idea, whats going on or what they are talking about, you are just running your mouths trying to make people think you are somebody
I think it's hard to come up with a clear goal because they are protesting the greed and selfishness they see. Sure, it's human nature and hard to legislate against, but maybe calling attention to the lack of social conscience of wall street and large corporations will get at least someone's attention. We need a big attitude change in this country, and wall street is the epitome of the bottom line ruling versus what is best for the country in the long run.
Naw, hoonew, they're out there venting their frustration at being pathetic losers who can't cut it in a world that has always been, and will always be, competitive. And, please note that wall street and corporations are private businesses, not public welfare agencies.
Unless, of course, you remember from Pelosi, Boehner and others, that Wall Street is actually our representative body in Congress. How's that Visa IPO doing?
That is what THEY are trying to get the lucky 60% that still have a life and a job to hear. We need GOOD jobs for the rest of us. It does little good to just write an op-ed in a blog or newspaper. If you have a job, you don't listen. The people that still have a job has an out of date attitude that a job can be obtained if you just go out and apply. I assure you that if that was possible these occupy people would not be causing you an inconvenience. If you want an inconvenience try to earn a living after losing your job. This movement is just trying to get your attention and policy makers to understand if this country wants keep its status it must have GOOD jobs for all. CEO’s need to stop sending jobs overseas just to keep their massive income. Bankers must stop their greedy manipulation of our economy for their own gains.
Bloomberg is only interested in protecting his billionaire cronies... He could care less about the person on the street or anyone considered MIDDLE CLASS...
OWS is only starting, and I feel congress and all the politicians better wake up and pay attention... People are tired of being crapped on over and over...
Congress keeps saying "We are doing the peoples work." Well, no your not, that's exactly what the people are saying to you... Boner on the golf course is doing the peoples work? I think not...
Jobs are sent overseas because of the government taking the money from the owners of the corporations, unless these corporations commit to having unions then they are not welcomed in most states. Just look at how government did not want Boeing to build a plant in South Carolina just because it was not unionized. But from what I understand, there have been people at the protests that have left their jobs to protest? Whycomplain about not having a job then? These protesters have not been peaceful, destroying things, defacating on police cars and the American flag, trashing parks they are staying in? How can anyone support this? Where are the Environmentalist now, are they part of this? Allowing a person to defacate on the streets surely isn't good for the environment, right? If people want to protest the latest fees from the banks, then they need to see Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) and Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) for developing the Frank-Dodd Act and Obama for signing it into law.
The best way to make it easier for everyone to find a job is to get the economy back on track. Closing ports and blocking people from getting to work is hurting the economy. The OWS crowd needs to ask itself how many people they have gotten fired due to their protests (as an example, I read a story about a small diner near Wall Street that laid off about 20 people since the protests block customers from getting off at their subway stop).
If they want real change, go to DC and get the politicians to change the laws. But, before you do that - try and come up with a coherent set of goals that can be openly debated. That's how you get real, productive change.
You have no idea what you are talking about. The RI$H get getting ri$her and the Middle class is disappearing. You must be part of the 1% or you are not well informed at all. Power to the people! We DO have rights!
They clog the subway this morning, there will be some really p*ssed off people just trying to get to work and make a living.
Pissed off people, really? What will it accomplish?? Hmmmmm Hopefully it will eventually accomplish much that is screwed up in this country and has been for many years. I believe that's the goal, isn't it?
The protesters are not the middle class, they are the dregs of society, there is a reason they dont have jobs, just look at them, would you hire one of these cretins.
Steve you're fulla @!$%#... If you really judged people on their actions how could you not be outraged at the actions and lack of accountablity directly ralated to the present economy and lack of jobs in this country? If you plan on responding to this please see if you can answer without using any of these thinking errors.. haa
So, while cops are in riot gear, spraying tear gas on these crowds of protesters, who is protecting the rest of the city from criminals? FYI - if you live in one of these cities and want to commit a crime, this is probably the time to do it.
Most of us realize that the liberty of being able to freely exchange goods and services with one another is exactly what enables us to work and on merit earn our own prosperity.
The problem is that they have already taken away our ability to earn our own prosperity - that's why they are protesting. You're basically living in a Communist country under the guide of "capitalism," the only difference is that your life is dictated by an oligarchy, not the government.
In 84-year-old woman has become a face of the national Occupy Wall Street movement after she was hit with pepper spray during a Seattle march.
I think if an 84 year old lady is mentally aware enough to participate in this event that she should receive no additional sympathy because she has reached almost 9 decades....If someone else took her there then shame on them...If it was her own decision then well, consequences for actions in participation in an unruly mob.
Who exactly has taken away your ability to earn your own prosperity?
It's not Wall Street.
The economy is in a slump due to progressive fiscal policies. When you increase the risk and potential costs of hiring and expanding while simultaneously lowering the potential expected pay off on businesses - either through threatening higher taxes, new burdensome regulations, or increasing entitlements they need to pay for like the PPACA - then is it any wonder why in aggregate those policies cause long term duration and broader depth of unemployment and thus spread misery and suffering to the very people those policies were intended to help (misguided though the method may be)?
If you really want to remove the obstacles to prosperity, then you have to start in Washington D.C. and evict the crony capitalists. Capitalism is not the problem - Cronyism is.
And this isn't to say that only Democrats engage in that kind of egregious behavior, Republicans will do it to. The blame doesn't belong squarely on any one party. But, the worst offenses are certainly on the Democrats of recent because they held and still hold most of the power: The handouts to the Autoworkers union at the taxpayer and secured credit holders expense - the exemptions to the PPACA (the law that Unions pandered for) that have disproportionately been awarded to those same Unions and other assorted Democratic allies - Democrats trying to prevent companies like Boeing from locating future manufacturing in States with a positive business climate due to individuals being protected from predatory forced Unionism in Right to Work States by trumping up bogus 'retaliation' charges - Democratic "leaders" like Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry (and in fairness a *lot* of Republicans too) engaging in insider trading based on their dealings behind closed doors on legislation, actions that are equally as corrupt as what sent someone like Martha Stewart to prison - Democrats treating tax payer money like their own personal venture capital with flailing companies like Solyndra - the list goes on and on...
What we need is to force a situation where the politicians must absolutely follow any rules they intend to inflict upon the rest of us, where they can not carve out special perks for themselves. We really should have a new Constitutional amendment to guarantee a complete wall of Separation between Business and State the way we have for Church and State under the 1st Amendment, to really drive a stake into the heart of the Crony part of crony capitalism. And we should probably include law that forces the government to balance it budget, and *accurately* report future liabilities rather than sweeping the unsustainable costs of our military and entitlement spending under the rug to be dealt with later once the entire system goes into catastrophic collapse. Otherwise we should restrict their ability to malfeasantly meddle with us as much as possible, and cut the government down to bear essentials, rather than inefficiently eating away at most of our growth potential like some kind of cancerous parasite.
But that's not what OWS is after. It's almost as though they took a look at crony capitalism, decided they wanted more of the crony handouts, and less of the free market capitalism that's the solution to so many of the problems they gripe about. They might have accurately identified a problem, but they're basically asking to make it worse rather than better.
Why are so many on the right so afraid of allowing the OWS to protest. I keep hearing that we are a free country with democracy and a constitution but it seems that only applies if you keep your mouth shut and do what corporate America and their puppets want you to do. We are becoming a country we are supposed to be against. We have seen other countries when their citizens protest against their government and condemn them for beating and killing those protesters. We keep telling them they should allow their citizens to protest but then we turn around and stop our own citizens from protesting. How can we be credible in the world when our own government uses force to prevent Americans form protesting. We are the laughing stock of the world because of our hypocritical agenda. This seems to be a typical agenda from the right, do as I say and not as I do. No wonder our country is in the toilet because we the people have ignored what has been happening for decades, the take over of our country by corporate America and outside influences.
Txmom32: Good answer if you are mentally aware to what you are doing then you must know there are consequences for your actions. I Am neither a 99% person nor a 1% person I am a hard working American that has finished up 20 plus years of serving my country Honorably to allow them to do this. If they had clear goals other than to disrupt the lives of the working people I might support their cause.
I agree. This is so overblown it's not even funny.
There were two incidents here on Tuesday where the Occupy Seattle protesters were pepper sprayed and in both of them they deserved it. In the first, a young woman threatened a police officer with a stick and then swung it at his head. Of course he arrested her which angered her companions. They proceeded to rush the police officer and were pepper sprayed. In the second incident, a group of protesters attempted to block a major downtown intersection during the rush hour. When the police asked them to disperse they refused and subsequently, they too were pepper sprayed.
While I agree with you that the 84 year old woman needs to take responsibility for her actions, I am also disturbed by the irresponsibility shown by the Occupy Seattle protesters including her in a situation that they knew was potentially volatile.
Winker...no one is afraid of OWS...they had their opportunity to garner support and when they didn't they raised their game to civil disobedience and attempts to impose themselves on law abiding citizens....The earnest have raised awareness but then allowed their cause to be hijacked by thugs and criminals.
The honest among them need to proceed without causing damage or elevating their cause to a criminal standard. If they are truly the majority they can promote their cause without infringing on the rights of those who do not agree with them.
I can conversely argue that those of us who do not wish our country to be taken down by a progressive agenda should take a stand but we can do so without infringing upon the rights of others. To use an analogy that fits...a cigarette smoker has the legal right to smoke...just not in locations where it can affect those who do not wish to breathe in cigarette smoke. It is the responsibility of individuals to temper their own behavior to consider the rights of others. You can protest all you wish as long as you do so within the boundaries of the law. You can walk along a sidewalk with a placard and picket as long as you don't smack someone with the sign.
Darrel and Seattle...Agreed...it is a bleeding shame that the protesters that stood along side of the elderly woman choose to exploit her rather than conduct themselves in a manner to protect her. But then she made her own choice to trust them within a community.
WINKER I disagree with you they are being given the right to protest they have been there for 2 months and yet I still hear no absolutes from them in the line of demands. What I see is violence with in the camps I also hear stories of them forcing people out is that not preventing others from freedom of speech also. Then there are the ones screaming for violence. They turned the park into a Pit of filth. Peaceful protests that do not present a high health hazard have always been welcome but there is more and more violence in the camps and out also maybe if you stepped out of the politics and looked from a neutral point you would see things better. I look and see things without a political view compromises could be made on both sides and they are both right and wrong but sitting there in filth and not cleaning up after yourself that has nothing to do with freedom of speech the city did the right thing and removed them because we all know they would not just leave to allow for cleaning. Then they were allowed to return so where are they preventing the protest what they are preventing is the return of the tents and filth. The park is not a camp ground with facilities it is a CITY park. Most cities have laws against sleeping in parks so I would say the city gave them leeway to allow their protest but at some point they had to clean the mess up.
txmom reads as one of those who would have preferred they killed the 84 year old protester, since she is no longer useful to the "job creators", and probably "doesn't pay any taxes".
Winker-2891142: Your argument is( I keep hearing that we are a free country with democracy and a constitution)
Exactly pal, yet the OWS is not for the Constitution Period. They want to turn the USA from the Land of the FREE, Home of the BRAVE to LAND OF THE ENSLAVED, HOME OF THE MOMMY BOYS.
Get a clue about how and why this Country was started what they believed in and what they stood for. LOOK up Classical liberalism that is WHAT ARE FOUNDING FATHERS WHERE. NOT Progressives, Liberals, Commies or Socialists.
If you look at the definiton of Classical liberalism and Conservatives YOU WILL SEE that they are Identical.
If you look at the deffinition of Classical liberalism, Progressives, Liberals, Commies or Socialists. They are not even close to being the same thing.
We keep telling them they should allow their citizens to protest, look at the Constitution PAL.
Amendment I: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
KEY WORD peaceably to assemble, NOT cause anarchy, theft, rape, doing drugs, throwing objects at police, burring cars, trashing an area.
The Consitition only gives you the right to again KEY WORD peaceably only.
You and the Occupiers have a right to freely speak your mind, you have the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, and there is no reason to fear that. But you do not have the right to illegally squat on private property against the property owners consent, nor to engage in violence, theft, vandalism, pose public health threats to others, and you shouldn't have the right to prevent other individuals from engaging in voluntary trade and exchange with each other to their mutual benefit. If you have something of value like a skill or effort you want to put forth as a part of those voluntary exchanges, then do so and benefit from it. But don't act to create simple and senseless destruction based in envy. You can protest all you like, but you may not trample upon the rights of other individual citizens in this nation in exercising your own rights. That is why these protests have been met with law enforcement. This is not an act of police brutality (with some possible exceptions), and it is not a curtailment of 1st Amendment rights. It is the law acting to prevent one group from imposing upon others without their consent because the group is violating those others rights.
If you want to see a successful way to protest, look at the Tea Party rallies. They were unfailingly peaceful, no riots, no vandalism, no public filth, they cleaned up after themselves, they made sure to get their proper permits and dispersed when their permits expired, they were supportive of the police who were protecting them, and instead of trying to impose on anyone they simply asked to be left alone, to stop being meddled with - and rather than get violent or engage in destructive acts, they went to the polls and voted on that principle.
Now, for the record I am not and do not identify as Tea Party. I am also probably one of the most socially liberal people you will find in this nation, so I am not a part of some kind of right wing conspiracy. I am pro-choice, pro-same sex marriage, pro-strict separation of church and state and freedom of religion, anti-censorship and absolute in favor of free speech and free press (including being able to take photos/videos of police for acting illegally and publishing that online to protect against police brutality without the police being somehow protected by wire tapping laws in those cases), I'm in favor of open immigration, and think drug laws do more harm than good. But I do recognize that one persons rights end where anothers begin. You can not violate someone elses rights while exercising your own and have that be ok.
I really don't care what anyone does as long as it does not adversely impact anyone else. The problem with OWS is they are negatively impacting others. They are blocking access to local businesses (which, btw, has resulted in layoffs for the "99%"), they shut down a port for hours, they are planning to interfere with the flow of traffic, and there are a variety of other things OWS has done that negatively impact others.
Good post, and just wanted to say I agree with all of the individual views in your last paragraph. (I am a fiscal conservative, but on social issues I'm right there with you)
txmom reads as one of those who would have preferred they killed the 84 year old protester, since she is no longer useful to the "job creators", and probably "doesn't pay any taxes".
I suppose if you read that you might check you aptitude with comprehension. At no point did I death wish her or anyone. Nor did I offer any disrespect to her age or stage in life....I said nothing about her being a pensioner nor did I suggest she does not pay taxes...I offer her a great respect in stating that if she has the mental acuity to voluntarily join this movement then she cannot, and according to other accounts, does not expect special consideration due to her age or stage in life. If some among her or in the news wish to assign some "special victim class" to her then they are doing her a great disservice. In another article she attributes her safety to an Iraqi vet who kept her from falling and being trampled by her compatriots. Seems one in a crowd cared about their fellow protester where others would have gladly run over her to save themselves.
The "anti- capitalist" label is a misnomer when haphazardly applied to the entire movement. There are many, a strong majority, in fact, who are involved in these protests who are not naive, misguided psuedo-anarchists or communists, but who are educated and prescient patriots, concerned with the fact that the current state of economic policies, encourages the use of corruption and unabashed exploitation of working class human beings and natural resources in order to provide a profligate ifestyle for those who tweak the system to better suit their nefarious means.
There are many signs in Occupy Boston that call for an end to capitalism, and I've personally witnessed protesters there marching with a black and red anarchist flag chanting 'hey hey ho ho capitalism has got to go!" If they are not anti-capitalist, then they've certainly chosen strange bed fellows and let their message get hijacked by the anti-capitalists. But personally, given that AdBusters, the Canadian magazine that really stirred it all up frequently runs anti-capitalism messages... from here it looks like that is an integral part of the entire movement.
"There are many signs in Occupy Boston that call for an end to capitalism, and I've personally witnessed protesters there marching with a black and red anarchist flag chanting 'hey hey ho ho capitalism has got to go!""
They are probably just using extremist tactics to call attention to the abuses they see in the capitalist system, and they seem to be succeeding in that respect. Every article that has anything to do with OWS always ends up with thousands of posts here on NewsVine. They are obviously getting people's attention.
Sickantired, yes... AdBusters has run anti-semitic articles, and there is a disturbing amount of anti-semitism that's been recorded at the various Occupy protests, but I was focused on the anti-capitalism aspect the article and original poster in this string of responses referenced.
Mickey, if the attention you draw to yourself makes people dislike you and then that gets associated with your cause, is the attention productive?
"if the attention you draw to yourself makes people dislike you and then that gets associated with your cause, is the attention productive?"
But not all the attention they are getting is unfavorable. Many people agree with them that the capitalist system in this country is broken and needs to be fixed. I saw a poll that indicated something like 76% of Americans think there is something wrong with the economic system in this country. What, specifically, can be done about it is another matter. However, the debate is just beginning, and they are starting it.
They also ran articles in 2004-2005 that sought to "highlight the jewishness of neocons" in order to try and demonize them.
That is the definition of anti-semitic behavior - and fully reasonable.
You can try dancing around that any way you like, but lets not pretend that what they did was ok just because you happen to like other causes they support. You can engage in a critical and principled disagreement with policies of Israel as a nation without engaging in anti-semitic behavior. AdBusters did not take that high route, instead they tried to spread hatred of conservatives by using their jewish ancestry.
Criticizing Israel and those Americans who put the interests of Israel before the interests of the United States is not antisemitic. Despite what you said, that's all Adbusters was doing. The only one dancing here is you. That old neocon jig.
Anti-Capitalist? That only serves to underscore how incredibly ignorant they are. All of the things they, their parents, families and friends OWN are due to the CAPITALIST type of government we have.
Their 'Freedom of Speech along with their very ability to do ANY public protesting at all" is a direct result of this "supposedly terrible CAPITALIST system" we live in.
After two full months of their "childish temper tantrums" WHAT have they actually accomplished?
NOTHING... absolutely NOTHING.
This entire movement has proven inept at accomplishing anything.
They have yet to represent ANY specific purpose or focus on a single objective.
Whatever "their original intentions were supposed to be" they have proven to be a misguided, ineffective hoard of disoriented children who seem to shout out incoherent messages that have so far... fallen on completely DEAF ears.
None of them have enunciated "any consistent or specific objective" of their objective.
So far, they have the ability to "act like helpless little spoiled children, whining, crying and complaining that 'other kids have more toys', hang out, use drugs, get high, get arrested, cause traffic congestion, camp out over night in parks, utter ANTI-SEMITIC slurs, live off mommy and daddy, utter no specific message and their greatest accomplishment so far is?
Do anything other than spending their time finding a job.
Real "model citizens"... :-)
And then one day they all just went away?
Why is no one really surprised.
Instead of being "meaningful specifics" they are all just "wandering generalities".
i dont really think any of you really know, the truth about anything that is going on, just flapping your lips because you dont have anything else to do
Students at Penn State recently rioted because they didn't want to accept that their school hero Joe Paterno did a despicable thing and facilitated child molestation by failing to act. You don't want to accept and admit that AdBusters engaged in reprehensible bigoted behavior, for whatever reason whether that is their targets or due to other things they support, or some combination of things.
But the reality is it's all the same, and that's no dance on my end (nor am I a neocon for the record, read above for the laundry list of socially liberal causes I champion). Personally I think we need to hold the people and organizations we respect to a high standard, and call them on their poor decisions, not hide them in an attempt to shield them from criticism. For me, that is the ethical and reasonable thing to do.
Criticizing Israel's policies or policies of individuals here in the U.S. for supporting bad policy is not anti-semitic. I happen to be somewhat sympathetic to the plight of the people in Palestine that live with the Israeli clamp down upon them - though I recognize that in acting violently and unlawfully, they bring a great deal of that harsh tyranny down upon themselves - I think Israel as the greater power needs to act responsibly and has a duty to work towards freeing the Palestinian people from the harsh treatment they impose on them. But that is not what AdBusters did, the magazine very specifically sought to use the jewish ancestry of their opponents to demonize, smear, and incite hatred against them. And that, no matter what you think about the targets, no matter what politics you agree or disagree with the targets on, is wrong.
"That only serves to underscore how incredibly ignorant they are. All of the things they, their parents, families and friends OWN are due to the CAPITALIST type of government we have."
Capitalism is not a type of government. It is an economic system. You should take that into consideration before you go calling others ignorant. The pot calling the kettle black, you know.
So , now if you are against corruption and greed and would like to see laws change in order to infuse some fairness into our system you are characterized as "anti-capitalist", that is rather telling...
Anything in excess is not good for anyone - even ice cream and capitalism. We are where we are today because of capitalism gone to the extremes off the rails - amuck! It takes extremes to change extremes.
Just because the article characterizes them as anti-capitalist doesn't make it so, I am certainly for capitalism , but that doesn't mean we cannot have a level playing field and a set of rules that applies equally to all , or trade agreements that do not encourage companies to leave our country... how is that anti-capitalist?
You've got to be kidding me! Because people are protesting the vast corruption and injustices in this country they are anti-American? Get a clue! This country has a long history of people being able to stand up for what they believe. It must be miserable to be so hateful.
that is protectionism , just as bad, the reasons the jobs left is unions, over paid lazy workers, over priced benefits like health care and excess holidays and vacations and pensions. when america will work for the same price as a chinese worker the jobs will stay home
When your group runs persistent anti-capitalism messages, signs like "END CAPITALISM NOW!!!" which is one of many signs I've seen up here at Occupy Boston to that effect, then you are likely to get labeled as anti-capitalists.
They are mad because they dont have jobs, the reason they dont have jobs is that they cant compete on the global market, nobody is going to pay you 30.00 an hour to do something that somebody else is willing to do for 10.00. Unions screwed the workers in this country by pricing American labor right out of the market.
Get the filthy junkies out of the park and keep them out.
Later in the thread, Bobl-1819708 told them to 'bend over and insert [your bible and god] in your anus'. You're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
Fox had less reporting but told more in the report than I am hearing here. They summed it up real well what the action was all about. Some nut job saying they were going to burn down NY city and wipe out Macys. I guess you liberals are proud of him....go visit him in jail. I bet Obama doesn't refer to them as lazy like he does the hard workers in the US, bc they are working for him, doing the same job(the only job) he held...organizing and learning how to destroy our country.
Perry is right in his ad about the socialists... he just went a little too easy on him though.
How is causing destruction bettering our economy? If you destroy something, especially if it is something that is paid for with hard-working, tax-payers dollars, would we not have to spend more money on that which was destroyed when that money could have been used to get one of these protesters a job? Why destroy something or someplace when you can go apply for a job there that could possibly have benefits such as health insurance, 401K, etc.? I think destroying things is more of a moronic way than just listening to Fox News.
This movement has no clear agenda but one and that is to disrupt business's, and cause chaos to scare people and damage as much property as possible. I listened to a guy yesterday screaming and yelling for people to burn the city down. This is not just a simple protest as they claim. Where are all the Democrat Politician's that were embracing them????
Where is Nancy Pelosi now, she said " they were wonderful ", Obama said they "represent all of America", well they never represented me!!!!!!
I agree- last night I asked what is there demands, what do they stand for, what do they hope to achieve and its like no one knows, I seen today they were protesting they want the bridges fixed, maybe thats what they are all about ,fixing bridges?? someone tell me??
I think most of them have been given to much and don't really understand what life outside of what their progressive schools taught them!! They march around and chant all the while they Text, Twitter and Blog on all of their little devices that Capitalists invented and they Bought with Money Earned or RECEIVED from Daddy working for all these Capitalist Companies they are protesting!! Makes NO Sense!!
If they try to block the trains themselves the city needs to increase the voltage on the third rail and speed up the trains. They should be charged if any of the equipment is damaged. That is what a Socialist Government would do. Heil Obama, Heil Obama
What is so revolting about right wing politics is they keep attacking the man, Obama, instead of focusing on issues that are dire. Turtlehead McConnel's own words were that the number one priority of the senate is to destroy this man, and NOT to focus on the crying needs of the country. They have no solutions and all they can do,since Day One of Obama's candidacy is to try to attack this "exotic dark" man as "Other." Radical Islamist, atheist, radical revolutionary Christian, socialist, and now privileged. It's all so absurd, but they know this is the way to a right-winger's heart. The formula is simple: prey on fears of his skin color, instill fear, hatred, suspicion, resentment. The Texas governor with a racial epithet on a rock to greet visitors to his ranch is now trying to remind us that Obama should not be intelligent, dignified, and educated. What went wrong that we allowed this to happen in AMerica? Let's cut him off at the knees before he sets the wrong example.
I'm so sick of hearing about that damn rock. It was a deer lease. For those who don't know what that means, he doesn't own the property. He leased it to hunt on, period. He didn't put it there. It had been there for years. It was not his property, therefore, he had no more right to change anything on the property than you do. Get over it already.
The name calling says more about your intelligence than anyone else's. I don't like Perry. I'm not going to vote for him. However, I seriously doubt he is a moron. He hasn't done a bad job with the state, all things considered, but I'm not sure he is the best candidate for president. I'm just sick of people yelling racism. It has been my experience that those that accuse others of racism are usually more racist than their target. The first post wasn't even on point and had nothing to do with the article. I was only pointing out he had been misinformed about who owned the property.
The NFL (National FELON League) has a team called: Washington REDskins
There is no greater example of 100% PURE RACISM than that... but everyone lets it slide.
As a matter of fact, for a team "suggesting that it represents RED SKINNED people" I am willing to bet serious coin that there is NOT even ONE single Native American in that ENTIRE organization?
Now, imagine having an NFL team called the WASHINGTON BLACKskins?
Considering the "racial makeup of the team" it is certainly far more appropriate to change the name to "BLACKskins".
Here's the INSANE part where SUDDENLY others start screaming "RACISM!"
And then some wonder why our country is so confused and so screwed up?
What a farce! These people arent 99% - they arent even 0.99%. 99% of people work and get on with living in a civil society.
It's time Pelosi, Obama and all those fools who encourage them walk away and SUPPORT working families, retirees, the true working poor over a bunch of disgruntled professional protestors who have no agenda but to destroy the society we have - which will not perfect, is a damn sight better than any other system developed in human history.
Anti-Capitalist Movement? Whoa MSNBC keep your opinions to yourself and report the news. They never said the movement was "anti-capitalist", to ythe contrary they are protesting against anti-capitalist economies in the USA and most of the world. WTF, just report the news.
Anytime I hear people spouting nonsense about how business owners should split their profits with employees after paying them a good wage for their work, I'd label them anti-capitalist too. If they want a share of the profit, let them start their own business.
No one is advocating they split the profits, they want the jobs to stay here, they want bail outs to the big financial firms to stop, they want everyone to pay their fair share of taxes, they want the corporate purchases of our legislators to stop.
Which of these positions is it that you find unacceptable?
There have been several people supporting the protests that have said that. They want taxpayers to eat the costs of student loans they have taken out and now don't want to repay. What I'm trying to figure out is why these same people aren't buying from local craftsmen and farmers instead of corporations. How many of these people work for locally owned business and not corporations? If you want a local job, work for a local businessman and don't buy foreign made products. No one twists their arm to buy cheap Asian made electronics. These people want their cake and eat it too. They expect the low prices that corporations can provide and they aren't willing to work for local companies that cannot compete with the wages corporations pay and then they protest that corporations make money. Corporations are in business to make money, not provide jobs. If you are uspet with the laws that allow them to do this, you protest congress, not the business. Littering our parks and intimidating local shop owners is not going to impress a big financial firm. It is just going to alienate the very same people they claim to represent.
Corporations are in business to make money, not provide jobs.
This is the one thing that liberals just dont get, they think corporations are charities whose sole purpose is to provide them with high paying jobs, whether they have any skills or not.
From the actions of the police and local government , it's hard to tell if I was watching happenings in the U.S. and not in Syria and Iran. Is this their ideal of democracy that the U.S. government wants to spread to the rest of the world to help save and free them? The officials believe in the rights of the people as long as it's just on paper and they don't try to enforce them. Shame , shame , shame.
One day all will realize that economic well being of everyone is crucial for this country. We have become so selfish, greedy and lost sight of the common good.
Debate and discussion would be a start, then enact legislation. It is virtually impossible with the country so polarized, when legislators would be willing to see the country dragged down than to compromise their ideological positions in the interest of the common good (the party of no)
Naaa ... hippies actually had good music .. these fools just make noise and hippies never killed each other ... These people are fake protesters and fake hippies .. there is nothing real about these bums on any level
yeah evil rednecks, evil rich, evil republicans, evil farmers, only the (self) proclaimed (self) righteous intellectual superior elite progressives are not evil
Wasnt that your boy who was talking about burning NYC to the ground, and throwing a molotov coctail into Macy's? Must be a bunch of redneck junkies occupying that park.
Occupy organizers called for flash mobs, students strikes, rallies and musicals around the world to celebrate the anti-capitalist movement's two-month anniversary Thursday.
Getting a bit sensationalist lately about this, aren't we? Maybe someone is threatening to cancel their ads here? Speaking about YELLOW Journalism and swaying opinion in a negative direction; Here is a fine example, Folks.
Rufus DUD: I'm neither a supporter NOR a member of the "Movement" YOU on the other hand are doing a fine job of putting forward Tea-Totaller ideals with your statements. "If they disagree with you, SHOUT THEM DOWN!" So sez Tea-Cozy Sally. By any chance are you a supporter of that big-mouthed, no-sense Texas Governor?
What exactly are these people protesting and exactly what do they want done about it? Who started these protests and provided seed funding? If they do not want capitalism then what do they want in its place? I am trying to understand this. Do they want the government to own and run everything like in a communist society? Even the communist Chinese are now operating a market economy. The truly non-capitalist nations in this world are not doing all that well.
No, they want the corruption in our economy and the policies that support it to end. In essence the USA and most of the world is no longer capitalist. Capitalism is meant to drive efficiency and it has no longer done that because of cronyism that keeps the REAL "producers" like engineers and scientists poor while rewarding people who administer "CREATIVE FINANCING VEHICLES" which do about no good for humanity.
Furthermore, they do not feel compelled to solve the problem, where the source of the problem is being hidden from us. Case in point, many creative financing schemes that were to blame for the bailout are instrumented by corporations that block public access to how they invest and what they do with the money. They do not allow the information necessary for recognizing the cause of the problem to be known, thus obstructing the truth from us. OWS has no problem admitting simply, its not our problem to solve, you broke it, you fix it.
401K is a scam, I am essentially forced to buy a product or suffer massive tax penalties. My money is then lumped in a creative financing vehicle, and given to companies who short sell against it performing well, and do not report (truthfully) that fact to me or whatever else they are doing with my money. In essence they "PRIVATIZED" taxes, because thats what 401K amounts to in my book.
Yeah Communism is a perfect solution. Look at China and the USSR... Government of the people.... Most have nothing, with no rights. Police states. If you try to protest, you are thrown in jail and tortured, or run over by a tank.
Hahaha we borrow all of our money from China. They seem to have all the money and if that's the standard everyone uses (which it is) they are better right?
No Rufus, you don't see it. I put the money 401K and it is not taxed, if I don't its taxed, I loose 28 percent of it to taxes. Flip it around. Since the goverment does not get that money, it is of no interest to them, however instead of lowering my taxes, the IRS essentially imposes a 28 percent penalty for money they would otherwise not get. You are very pollyanna about the way things work. Do some research and see who was behind 401K in the 80's and why. If it was soooo clean, how come investment backs spent million lobbying for some tax excemption they would never get. If you are not getting the money LET ME KEEP IT, you do not need it. It has nothing to do with trying to get people to save, because many have lost. If they wanted to spur savings, do you think that along with imposing a tax, they would at least require truthful accounting to guarantee that we were really saving? NO they use the IRS to force me to give them money so they can leverage and wrap it up into mortgage ETF's loan money to everyone, and drive t he price of houses through the roof, something we all need.
I benefit in NO way. Let me put my 401K into my house to pay it off and dont tax that. NOPE!! restricted transaction. Now I can give the bank money to pay for your house, just not mine.
Rufus, you don't call your retirement accont losing say 30% of its value because of Wall Street greed and irresponsibility a penalty? You do realize that they want to give all of our retirement money to Wall Street... are you in favor of that?
It is not a hand out to expect to at least get back my money that I have paid in to social security...is it?
Chris, exactly who is "they"? Exactly what corruption in our economy areyou talking about? Exactly what policies support corruption in our economy? You say that the USA and most of the world in no longer capitalist. Is this a good or a bad thing? Exactly how can the USA and most ot the world again become capitalist? What do you mean by cronyism? So do you think that the laws that have forced banks to offer creative financing vehicles should be repealed so as to end the disregulation of the banking industry and hence shore up some of our monitary problems? What specifically should be done to make engineers and scientists less poor? I would love to be making more money.
WH try keeping some of the jobs and research here, in this country, that would certainly help the scientists and engineers. That would also mitigate our dependance on Chinese capital and create more jobs. That would be a start.
Look at those businessmen who are extremely rich. How many of them were actual visionaries back in the day? How many of them are actually skilled in something other than running a business? And how many of them plan to donate large portions of their wealth?
Most of them got rich through corruption, manipulation, or sheer luck. Do you really think Rupert Murdoch deserves to be up there?
You are the one that is wrong. The tax on the amount of money that you put (no one is forcing you to save) into your 401k is deferred. When you start taking distributions of that money you will be taxed on it but most likely at a lower rate than you are paying in taxes now because most peoples incomes will be significantly lower when they retire. So you can invest in a 401k and pay the tax later or you can pay the tax now and invest anyway that you want.
"401K is a scam, I am essentially forced to buy a product or suffer massive tax penalties. My money is then lumped in a creative financing vehicle, and given to companies who short sell against it performing well, and do not report (truthfully) that fact to me or whatever else they are doing with my money. In essence they "PRIVATIZED" taxes, because thats what 401K amounts to in my book."
Since when is someone forced to put their money into a 401K at work? There are other options: keep the money yourself (then you can pay the extra on your house), CD's, Money Market accounts, etc. But I have never heard of "being forced" to contribute to a companies 401K, am I wrong on this?
"We call upon the 99% to participate in a national day of direct action and celebration,"
I am really tired of being told, and assumed, that 99% of this nation are in some way involved with the OWS movement (lol movement...). First off, you people insult the basic intelligence of those around you by saying "we represent the majority" - who the hell is your majority? Not too many people are running around defending OWS here in South Carolina, in fact, not too many people here give a damn about it.
Secondly, why are you claiming to represent a faction of individuals, that doesn't care about your motives, that thinks you're a bunch of fools, and thinks that you're way of rationalizing the situation is 1) out of hand 2) not making headway and 3) seeming more and more like a disorganized riot as opposed to anything productive?
Lastly, for those individuals you are "representing", it's a slap in the face for you to say "we're celebrating two months of the OWS movement!!" - ya know what I say? Good for you, glad you have your priorities straight. So happy that you think two months of accomplishing nothing is something worth being excited about.
When you morons actually accomplish something decent, try getting in the news then. Otherwise, just stay out of it or disappear quietly like the majority, who you're not representing, knows will occur.
because we here in South Carolina embrace greed and corruption, we love the good old boy system, and want to make sure everyone knows there rightfull place in society.
Did you even understand what he said? Let me simplify. If you are buying from corporate America instead of from your local craftsmen and farmers, you helped create the problem. Stop protesting, go home and plant a garden.
Do you know how many of these rioters are carrying an ipod or ipad. The hypocrisy of these angst-ridden children is probably the highest level I have ever witnessed in a group.
Bunch of kids playing hippies? No no no no no. NO.
I do not think so. These are young adults, and you sound like a bitter old man "kids playing hippies".......have you rolled over and sided with the Republicans yet, or has it always been that way? You sound like you're on the sides of the Filthy, Rotten, Souless Rich bastards who are preaching against inflation.
These adults are BEYOND sick and tired of the economy being held hostage, or they wouldn't be protesting. These young kids CANNOT find jobs, despite getting out there and wearing blisters into their feet from looking day in day out!
Idk if you ever had to find a job in a CRAPPY economy like this when you were 18-21 years old, but spend a day in the young adults'shoes before you come on here and call us "kids" and "hippies", cause I've got news for you. These "kids"(ADULTS)are getting older, they are in their PRIME. You're just angry because you are NOT in your prime anymore.
"Now they are becoming serious pests" GOOD! Let's hope they get even MORE aggravating! If that is the only way to get through, so be it.
These "hippies" as you call them, come from all aspects of life...poor, rich, went to college, or did not go to college, black, white, red, yellow, or brown, raised by both parents, or raised by one parent, who are just trying to find a job that will allow them to move out on their own, and at LEAST get an apartment. Hell, right now, I would be happy with a roomate and a small two bedroom apartment...at least then I could start putting some extra $$$ away for college. But it's not gonna happen until I can find a decent job, now is it?
This "nonsense" will get wrapped up. The young adults are rising up against the BS, and all the politicians, and Washington will have to do something about it sometime.
Never ceases to amaze me how many people are willing to repeat the propaganda delivered to them by the 1%, who, btw, own the media and control the message. Half of the 99% will continue to vote against their best interests and believe the GOP is working for them...
They have been in that park for 2 months, not exactly what I would call wearing blisters looking for a job. Its time for the stinky children to go home.
Could you say the same thing about our soldiers being in the trenches for two months or two years? These protesters are trying to wake people up to the growing differences between the rich and poor. They don't want to be there anymore than the soldiers overseas. You want everyone to do your dirty work for you ,it seems. This way,you weren't at fault. You're a coward, let's face it. You know there's a problem, and all you come up with is namecalling? They are fighting together,as one, like our troops, for our stolen rights, and sacrificing a warm home for a piece of work like you? Hope your jobs next.
There have always been differences between rich and poor, you seem to think its the job of the rich to give the poor enough money so they can live the good life, and have somebody else pay for it. If you dont have the drive, ambition, or skills to not be poor, how is that the fault of the rich.
@The stinky children ARE at home, watching these events unfold on the news, while adults like myself are looking for work, day in, day out, being persistent, and annoying about it, so I get something.
There's nothing I would love to do more than to go and protest, but I have the repsonsibilties of keeping this house clean, keeping my cats fed/treated, raking outside, and that doesn't even take up half of my day.
The rest of the time I'm out searching for work. MAYBE if this economy wasn't in the crapper, I'd have a job, and more $$$$ to buy a used car, but I don't. Instead I have to give whatever change I have (which isn't a lot) to the bus.....2.25 if you aren't in high school or college anymore, and frankly, I think the fact that HS/college studens are getting special treatment(discounts)is BS. The fact that I'm having this much trouble finding work should speak VOLUMES.
What are you, an old timer, Steve? Is THAT why you're calling the NEW ADULTS, THE NEXT GENERATION, "stinky children"? What's the matter? Is it not your time anymore? That's right, it's THEIR time, so get over it.
And as far as the actual children and kids go, I think it's a GOOD thing for them to witness this kind of thing. Maybe that way, when they get to be young adults, they'll remember all this stuff, so they'll be able to prevent the economy from going to hell.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
All of these news stories Casey Anthony, the sexual abuse scandal, all these stories about crimes against children.........the next generation of kids is going to be so sheltered and overprotected, overmonitored - - I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, but........chances are, their parents won't even let them watch this sort of thing when it's on the news, because it will be "damaging to their psyches" so maybe they won't get to learn.
As the spouse to a soldier who spent a year "in the trenches" I object to your comparison.
Those protesters aren't giving up all that much, in comparison to a deployed soldier. They (protesters) are choosing to be there. They also aren't in constant anger of IED's, or weapons-fire. They can also go home when they want to.
You say you would like to protest... but then you admit you have responsibilities. These people are ditching theirs to spend months at these parks.
The Occupy people are also causing problems for the 99% they claim to be fighting for. A friend of mine lives in Oregon. The protesters are screwing up the vehicle traffic flow and the light-rail schedule in Portland. They are interfering with all businesses, not just those banks they are protesting. All they are doing is pissing (and in some cases frightening) off the regular citizens who are trying to go to work/shop/etc...
Occupy people are acting like children. Throwing tantrums in the street is not how to accomplish anything. How about voting? Boycotts?
Let's not ruin the lives of the people you're 'fighting' for.
YOU objected to my point, while at the same time MISinterpreting it. I'm saying if I weren't so busy with all of the other @!$%# on my plate, I'd be out there. You have no idea what it's like having to maintain this ENTIRE house, look after two highstrung cats, and juggle a job search with no transportation.
We are NOT talking about deployed soldiers. We're talking about YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT DEPLOYED HERE AT HOME ON OUR SHORES.
I understand your perspective, but the ONLY reason you pointed that out is because you have a loved on overseas, and therefore, your claim is opinionated and biased. Granted, these soldiers have given up a lot, but don't turn it into a "perspective" debate just because you have issues with a family member in the military.
"Screwing up the traffic flow and the light rail schedule in Portland".....well, that should OPEN YOUR EYES to the fact that this economy/job market situation is NOT being taken lightly. Not anymore. When there are this many protesters, traffic is going to get backed up. That happens at ALL protests, whether they're peaceful or not....what, do you honestly expect them to protest in hover machines??
"They can go home when they want to." Well, the fact that they have STAYED THERE VOLUNTARILY should speak VOLUMES to people like yourself about how fed up they've gotten....but it goes in one ear and out the other, doesn't it, lady?
They may not be in constant danger, and just because this is a NONviolent protest, that does not mean that they aren't in any danger.....things can happen, even at nonviolent protests. If other people are so frightened, they need to get some guts...or try to find where their own have spilled out, or learn to pick up their feet and RUN when things get out of hand.
The ones acting like idiots are making the protesters who actually give a damn about this @!$%#ty economy a bad name.
The only other reason I'm not protesting, is because I'm too busy being PERSISTENT, ANNOYING, AGGRAVATING to the point that it drives potential employers up the wall, and they're forced to hire me.
Object all you want, I will NOT budge on this.
STOP taking your personal issues with a family member who has been deployed, and using them to devalue my point. What your spouse is doing is honorable, but we're not talking about overseas anymore. At least I'm not.
Isis... apologies... the army objection was at Demmie-1555521. It was not meant as a devaluation of your comment.
When I edited I deleted a paragraph and her name. Then totally screwed it up trying to fix it in those few minutes.
The part directed at you was started at "You say you would like to..."
I don't think I misinterpreted your point. Your house, cats, and job search are more of a priority than the protest to you, yes? This is what I understood. I do actually know what it's like to take care of an ENTIRE house; also an into everything toddler, as well as a job hunt. We at the moment don't have pets though. The dog was a pound puppy and had health issues. She didn't make it.
It's not that they are just backing up traffic. They have had the protesters actually on the tracks. That's not an accidental or unintended consequence. It also is counter-productive to what they want to accomplish. They're not getting support from the entire 99% (like they claim to want) because of this kind of thing.
It hasn't gone out one ear and out the other. They are not accomplishing their goals this way. I don't know about you.. but I wouldn't like having people screaming at me when I go to/am at work. Or go anywhere else for that matter. The small businesses can't handle the drop in customers the way a large one can. They are defeating their own purpose. The people they are bothering are not the ones who can do anything.
If it's a few idiots making them look bad... get rid of the idiots.
What you're doing to find employment is what you need to do. The protesters aren't going to get a job by sitting in the park.
You know when a kid is crying, and just keeps crying, and you ask them about 100 times why they're crying, and they can't answer you?...but just keep on crying?
That's a tantrum, right? This is different from OWS.... how ...?
Occupy organizers called for flash mobs, students strikes, rallies and musicals around the world to celebrate the anti-capitalist movement's two-month anniversary Thursday.
If they do not agree on one or two things to accomplish with the occupying -besides creating chaos and disrorder- the only thing that they are going to accomplish is to get arrested.
For every one arrested, ten will take his place.
Isnt that that the same rhetoric the Islamist use Anindividual? Obamas Wandering Simpletons have long ago worn out their welcome.
Bob Martinez
The 99% is telling you to go home and stop hurting the 99%. There is nothing about your little protest that merits celebration. You have achieved nothing except a general dislike for your irresponsible actions and your wish to destroy the very system, (Capitalism) that is paying the 99%'s wages.
Go home.
Yes....the town green campers would prefer that the government ran more and more of everyone's lives...cater to people (while going broke) like they do in Europe (growing broke). The campers would like that !
Witchrunner...great point.
Wake up America!
Winker
As I see it the Cops are doing the bidding of the Greater Community...providing protection, concerns of public sanitation, providing public areas where citizens can come and go without being accosted....
Terriels & Derek,
If you really want people to take you seriously and have productive discussions that result in change, my suggestion is to not insult large blocks of people and focus on coherent, rational posts.
What would you expect from the flea bag party?
Agreed, Ron.
Also, one should always present a solution when presenting a demand. The solution should be real and obtainable, even if only baby-steps...kind of like "We want $100.00 in unmarked bills and a few extra port-o-potties and in return, we won't use granny as a pepper-spray shield."
See how easy that was?
Hummmmmmmmmm Maybe they should be "Occupy Capital Hill" As well ...
This link is a very compelling, and disturbing story .. that ties into the story

if you haven't viewed it .. regardless of which side your on ..you should ..
i think the majority of the people on hear have no idea, whats going on or what they are talking about, you are just running your mouths trying to make people think you are somebody
Winker-2891142 ............ Good Post! ..thank you ....
John Paul Stevens in his decisions, while on the Supreme Court repeatedly used the phrase " Fair an Impartial" ................
Isn't that what as a people we are entitled to Constitutionally from our representatives?
That, to me, seems to be the overall impetus of this movement .... how can anyone disagree with that for the American people ?
Moonbeam - there is nothing "Fair and Impartial" about their demands.
Incidentally, the news just said the OWS, New York is only a couple hundred people today, not the thousands they expected.

@ texan for truth,
Way to go for shining a bright light on the level of intelligence coming out of Texas.
As if George W. bush and Rick Perry haven't done enough to make Texas look like a state of morons and losers , (which it most certainly is not).
You are an embarrassment to your chosen name.
They clog the subway this morning, there will be some really p*ssed off people just trying to get to work and make a living.
WTF does that accomplish?
Annoying people... which is sure to buy them sympathy and support, right?
K A Black,
The best way to make it easier for everyone to find a job is to get the economy back on track.
TAX THE RI$H & CORPORATIONS!!!!
So you judge people by looks? Post a picture of yourself Steve, lets see what you're working with. I'd not hire you for such an irrational statement.
I judge them by their actions, and I dont need you to hire me, I do very well on my own.
I'm sure after a week or two at one of your hunting lodges you will look just like them.
Ask the people directing the cops - that is their job!
Time the pigs took some lumps!
Unfortunately the "pigs" in this case aren't the ones in uniforms.
BobI-1819708 are you really advocating violence against the police?
Bobl - why would you want the protestors to get some lumps??
The problem is that they have already taken away our ability to earn our own prosperity - that's why they are protesting. You're basically living in a Communist country under the guide of "capitalism," the only difference is that your life is dictated by an oligarchy, not the government.
If they had clear goals other than to disrupt the lives of the working people I might support their cause.
txmom:
SI
Winker,
You and the Occupiers have a right to freely speak your mind, you have the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, and there is no reason to fear that.
Winker,
I really don't care what anyone does as long as it does not adversely impact anyone else.
JPM77,
Good post, and just wanted to say I agree with all of the individual views in your last paragraph. (I am a fiscal conservative, but on social issues I'm right there with you)
Terrell....
"Oh, the world owes me a living..." - Grasshopper
Anti capitalists? What a sorry bunch of misdirected fools!
No...You are.
Wonderful, "Best Person," that's very profound. So what's the REAL action plan they're proposing to fix that (one, of many) little blanket statement?
There are many signs in Occupy Boston that call for an end to capitalism, and I've personally witnessed protesters there marching with a black and red anarchist flag chanting 'hey hey ho ho capitalism has got to go!" If they are not anti-capitalist, then they've certainly chosen strange bed fellows and let their message get hijacked by the anti-capitalists. But personally, given that AdBusters, the Canadian magazine that really stirred it all up frequently runs anti-capitalism messages... from here it looks like that is an integral part of the entire movement.
adbusters is not only anti-capitalist but anti-semitic
JPM77,
"There are many signs in Occupy Boston that call for an end to capitalism, and I've personally witnessed protesters there marching with a black and red anarchist flag chanting 'hey hey ho ho capitalism has got to go!""
JPM77,
"if the attention you draw to yourself makes people dislike you and then that gets associated with your cause, is the attention productive?"
The charge that Adbusters is antisemitic is antireason.
http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/10/22/bernie-farber-and-len-rudner-selling-anti-semitism-in-the-book-stores/
Instead of being "meaningful specifics" they are all just "wandering generalities".
i dont really think any of you really know, the truth about anything that is going on, just flapping your lips because you dont have anything else to do
Daniel Cecil,
Students at Penn State recently rioted because they didn't want to accept that their school hero Joe Paterno did a despicable thing and facilitated child molestation by failing to act.
I don't agree with your characterization of what Adbusters did. It's that simple.
Speedy, Palm Harbor, Florida,
"That only serves to underscore how incredibly ignorant they are.
It takes extremes to change extremes.
antiamerican commy socialist terrorist and should be thrown out of the country!!
To whom are directing this rant Limb...?
anindividual -dont like the usa move to cuba and be happy with your socialism
Thank you Mr limbaughger!
im saying anticapitalist are........read my post
Just because the article characterizes them as anti-capitalist doesn't make it so, I am certainly for capitalism , but that doesn't mean we cannot have a level playing field and a set of rules that applies equally to all , or trade agreements that do not encourage companies to leave our country... how is that anti-capitalist?
You've got to be kidding me! Because people are protesting the vast corruption and injustices in this country they are anti-American? Get a clue! This country has a long history of people being able to stand up for what they believe. It must be miserable to be so hateful.
that is protectionism , just as bad, the reasons the jobs left is unions, over paid lazy workers, over priced benefits like health care and excess holidays and vacations and pensions. when america will work for the same price as a chinese worker the jobs will stay home
jp its biblical read my post below
When your group runs persistent anti-capitalism messages, signs like "END CAPITALISM NOW!!!" which is one of many signs I've seen up here at Occupy Boston to that effect, then you are likely to get labeled as anti-capitalists.
WOW! The trolls are out in force today...you all give real meaning to the term "astro-turfing".

Fox news and Perry? Well you just passed the moron test!
you tell him jim, if you don't fall in lockstep with the progressive agenda then you are a moron
I agree- last night I asked what is there demands, what do they stand for, what do they hope to achieve and its like no one knows, I seen today they were protesting they want the bridges fixed, maybe thats what they are all about ,fixing bridges?? someone tell me??
here you go for some of what I got from them so far http://problembanklist.com/category/too-big-to-fail-banks/ and the base of there intent http://edge.org/conversation/neuroscience-and-justice-gazzaniga and other forms of corruption also it seems. At least we can get a lot of republican sites and tea party and democrat sites blocked and put threw the courts now. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/11/piracy-blacklisting-bill/ and a few other bills they have done lately that will get them and the rush guy blocked baned and in court cases.
Janie Ackerly: Idiocy, Never makes any Sense.
These idiots need to "Occupy" a J.O.B.
@ Steveinri Miss the point much?
I think some should have gotten a good strong switch across their legs along time ago.
wonder what musical they come up with
If they try to block the trains themselves the city needs to increase the voltage on the third rail and speed up the trains. They should be charged if any of the equipment is damaged. That is what a Socialist Government would do. Heil Obama, Heil Obama
Most of these fools act like animals ... @!$%#tin in the street and living like bums ....
Treat em like animals .. shoot em with a dart gun .. drag em out the the country somewhere and see if they find their way back ...
These guys are nothing but people with idiotic beliefs looking for a free hand out ....
On 2nd thought .. some of them need ot just be shot period ...
Wrong topic moron. Has nothing to do with being a republican or democrat.
Redneck noise! Perry is a moron, thats why country folk like him!
While I do not agree with Perry not just crushing the rock, there are many places in the U.S. with racially charged names.
Racism wasn't just isolated to Texas.
Check your own state and see for yourself. I am sure you have at least one "Non PC" named location or street.
Rocky
I'm beginning to think the real 99% agree with you.
Obama owns this "movement", and it will be an anchor around his neck, Pelosi too.
Texas Lady
Well exactly what should be done about the situation?
Debate and discussion would be a start, then enact legislation. It is virtually impossible with the country so polarized, when legislators would be willing to see the country dragged down than to compromise their ideological positions in the interest of the common good (the party of no)
Damn hippies, KILL THEM ALL.
Naaa ... hippies actually had good music .. these fools just make noise and hippies never killed each other ... These people are fake protesters and fake hippies .. there is nothing real about these bums on any level
Hippies??? What are you kidding? Go change your adult diaper! Hippies! haha
How about dippies?
I believe that these Occupiers have taught us a lesson. We need to follow in their footsteps. We need to use violence against them.
We? Ill bet you are in about as much shape as a slug and hide behind a gun.
I have a Gun and a CHL License and I am willing to use it to defend my Family. The second amendment allows this against people like you
I have over 100 guns on My Ranch just in case Carl's isnt working or he is out of Ammo.
Just like a redneck. Only understands violence.
So by your interpretation, is it those who own guns who are rednecks? Or only people with guns are violent? Or only rednecks are violent?
You're quite offensive for someone who hasn't got a clue.
yeah evil rednecks, evil rich, evil republicans, evil farmers, only the (self) proclaimed (self) righteous intellectual superior elite progressives are not evil
anonymous-2746293
Just like a redneck. Only understands violence.
Wasnt that your boy who was talking about burning NYC to the ground, and throwing a molotov coctail into Macy's? Must be a bunch of redneck junkies occupying that park.
Some seem to want equality to clime up in standing. Not subsidized wealth like this http://problembanklist.com/fdic-to-cover-losses-on-trillion-bank-of-america-derivative-bets-0419/ . That's more than the world GDP for a year. All paid for by American tax payers. LOL
Chris,
You are the one that is wrong.
Chris 395043
"401K is a scam, I am essentially forced to buy a product or suffer massive tax penalties. Since when is someone forced to put their money into a 401K at work? There are other options: keep the money yourself (then you can pay the extra on your house), CD's, Money Market accounts, etc. But I have never heard of "being forced" to contribute to a companies 401K, am I wrong on this?
Complacent consumers coveting convenience contribute to corporate control.
can't care; can it?
Did you even understand what he said? Let me simplify. If you are buying from corporate America instead of from your local craftsmen and farmers, you helped create the problem. Stop protesting, go home and plant a garden.
Do you know how many of these rioters are carrying an ipod or ipad. The hypocrisy of these angst-ridden children is probably the highest level I have ever witnessed in a group.
bunch of kids playing hippies - now they are becoming serious pests - time to wrap this nonsense up
Bunch of kids playing hippies? No no no no no. NO.
I do not think so. These are young adults, and you sound like a bitter old man "kids playing hippies".......have you rolled over and sided with the Republicans yet, or has it always been that way? You sound like you're on the sides of the Filthy, Rotten, Souless Rich bastards who are preaching against inflation.
These adults are BEYOND sick and tired of the economy being held hostage, or they wouldn't be protesting. These young kids CANNOT find jobs, despite getting out there and wearing blisters into their feet from looking day in day out!
Idk if you ever had to find a job in a CRAPPY economy like this when you were 18-21 years old, but spend a day in the young adults' shoes before you come on here and call us "kids" and "hippies", cause I've got news for you.
Half of the 99% will continue to vote against their best interests and believe the GOP is working for them...
isis
They have been in that park for 2 months, not exactly what I would call wearing blisters looking for a job. Its time for the stinky children to go home.
Steve-2081387
Could you say the same thing about our soldiers being in the trenches for two months or two years? These protesters are trying to wake people up to the growing differences between the rich and poor. They don't want to be there anymore than the soldiers overseas. You want everyone to do your dirty work for you ,it seems. This way,you weren't at fault. You're a coward, let's face it. You know there's a problem, and all you come up with is namecalling? They are fighting together,as one, like our troops, for our stolen rights, and sacrificing a warm home for a piece of work like you? Hope your jobs next.
Wow, and I bet you voted for Bush too................TWICE!
Isis...
No no no no no no no. NO.
The protesters aren't going to get a job by sitting in the park.
.....I suppose mistakes were made on both ends. Sorry about the mix up, and if my last comment came off as harsh, I apologize.
They may not get a job just sitting there, but as long as they keep it up, and keep sending the message, it will get through sooner or later.
You know when a kid is crying, and just keeps crying, and you ask them about 100 times why they're crying, and they can't answer you?...but just keep on crying?
That's a tantrum, right? This is different from OWS.... how ...?
weak analogy alert
Rufus the toothless doofus who is useless...Does that rebuttal better suit your stunted intellect?
Call to action? How bout doing something useful like helping mom and dad with a home...pick up trash... look for some kind of job?
Or, if you are hell-bent on your idea of "action"...take your show on the road to Washington where the REAL culprits are.
