I think it's unrealistic of you to expect Evangelical Christians to actually follow the teachings of Christ. Jesus said a lot of things that they'd rather forget he said, like love your neighbors, share with the poor and the one that really gets me is how they love to bash gays, which is only mentioned in a couple verses (and not in the way they think it is) yet the entire chaper of Mark 10 is devoted to denouncing divorce, yet, according to the 700 Cult themselves, the #1 demographic in the USA getting more divorces than anyone else are, you guessed it, EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS! I get a little sick of hearing comments like yours from people about Christains because let me tell you, I am a christain and I do not ever BASH Anyone. The woman seems to be making every attempt to turn her life around. Not being in porn films for 2 years at the age of 23 is almost 10% of your entire existence on the planet. It's also wise to note that she started very young, for reasons none of you know, and actually became very famous in her time. (She was a darn good porn actress)

Yet she put all that behind her and is committed to helping these children read, more so then most parents in Compton, CA probably, and acted in a completely appropriate way and from everything we can tell. OK....let's get a grip on ourselves here. IMHO Ms. Grey did an admirable thing, reading to FIRST and THIRD graders. They probably really enjoyed it; she seemed to! Does anyone really believe that even one of those kids knows about her checkered past? Do we really believe that a six or eight year old would google her (if so, where the heck are the parental controls?) How could (why would) mom or dad tell their kids about her past without opening up a whole can of worms? I sure wouldn't have wanted that conversation with either one of my boys when they were that age. Instead maybe mom and dad should volunteer themselves to read at school in the future.

Its ok, No hard feelings that you are wrong. You can lump them in if you like. But it doesnt change the facts that the people who have a change take place spiritually (On the inside) are Christains and it shows on the outside. And those who have hate and no change on the outside are NOT Christains.

I do not recognize the name Sasha Grey, most likely because I do not seek that form of entertainment out now that Im a tad bit older. The fact that she was appearing on a syndicated television show nationally was probably the more direct reason she was allowed to participate.

I am sure that none of the kids were disappointed with someone famous reading stories to them, and for those that feel SHE shouldnt have been reading, (or been replaced by a fireman, or police officer) why don't you find the time to volunteer.

IT seems to me that with McGruff, and the Various Shows, and Explorer programs (and the complete participation of the LA, Orange, and San Bernadino, San Fernando Counties FD's and PD's programs for youth is very adequate. 1000's of Children show up for those, and participate, It's the adults that never show. It's still the same with our communities, and our schools.

Leadership starts at the bottom, training, caring, teaching, sharing, showing, and helping them grow, you'll be amazed at what they can do when you give them hope.

I suggest you go back and read my original post. I didn't generalize about ALL Christians, I was speaking about EVANGELICAL Christians. Those who follow the docterine of John Nelson Darby, the preacher from the 1850's who invented the idea of a pre-tribulation "rapture" (which incidentally is mentioned NOWHERE in the new testament.) John Nelson Darby started a ministry based on hate, fear, selfishness and intolerance, which directly conflicts with the teachings of Christ. Those who follow this docterine are often the ones who equate Christianity with right wing political beliefs. "True Christians" know that Jesus was not a fan of ANY political systems, and often spoke about the evils of politicians.

Also, your assertion that those who commit homosexual acts will not enherit the kingdom of heaven is patently incorrect. There are a couple of verses that address homosexuality, where it is referred to as an "abomination", however, these texts were incorrectly translated from the original hebrew. The word used, which was incorrectly translated as "abomination" actually mean that it was a deviation from tradition. If we look at the verse in Leviticus, which anti-gay groups like to use so much, where it is called an "abomination" for a man to lie with a man as he would with a woman, and should be put to death, and we go back just a couple of verses, we see that Moses also says that eating shrimp is an "abomination" and those who do so should also be killed. So why do we not also condemn those who eat shrimp as we do homosexuals? Becasue, again, it is NOT a sin, nor is homosexuality, it is merely a deviation from tradition.

I rest my case.

Chris slow down. Your meshing two different instances there, both of which are corrected by the New Testament, JESUS speaking of nothing is Evil that goes into a man (eating) but that which spews forth from his mouth (lies, deciet, treachery, etc). So those that argue about the immorality of sin (whichever sin), find that only one path lay towards redemption, forgiveness from believing in CHRIST who died on the cross.

Now lets look at the Cross, to further show your point on rapture, (which does exsist) but not for any living man. For it is appointed to all men(mankind) to die once, and then salvation. So I agree there is no pre-tribulation rapture. In fact specifically it points out that after JESUS died (the thief on the cross, and the SAINTS who had died before joined In the rapture) 

Back to your point on the verse in Leviticus, translated correctly on the word "abomination" , two entire country (city-states) were destroyed most specifically for THAT "abomination". Yet, instead of calling it an abominations, you merely use semantics and change it to "merely a deviation from tradition"? Why bother changing the words If it really means the same thing in your mind.

There's no question whatsoever that Sasha Grey has a publicist who's advised her to do charitable work, in order to build the groundwork for a career in mainstream entertainment.

This isn't cynicism, it's how the celebrity system works. Who knows, Ms. Grey may actually be quite fond of children. While she hasn't shown any outstanding talent as an actress, she's a shrewd and ambitious girl, and porn star does not equal unfeeling monster.

However, no one is allowed to complain about Ms. Grey unless he or she immediately signs up for some kind of charitable public service. There are plenty of opportunities these days.

Funny. Not long ago, I read an article about kindergarden children being taught about a 'different kind of family' from a transvestite, all about homosexual rights.

But when a reformed porn star wants to teach children appropriate school subjects, we make a fuss.

If the parents are worried their kids will Google her and see what she has done in the past, there is a simple solution to fix that. The problem with having her presence in a school where young minds are being formed is what she morally stands for. True, some would say that she hasn't hurt anyone. Elementary aged children, under proper parental control, should not know what a porn star is nor what an ex-porn star has done unless they are told or she walks in dressed in a teddi and pops in a dvd for "show & tell"! @Eejay, The isms were perpetuated when she was sent to a Compton school. While the program is in largely Black and Brown communities, there are (contrary to popular belief) poor white schools that require this program as well. It is unlikely that she could have been sent to any school without some sort of flap, but it is interesting that it was a school in Compton. Things are often done in the Black community that people won't try in the mainstream. I assure you that there are parents who read to there children, and raise them as well as anyone and their only crime is being poor. When those parents hear that a former porn star was reading to their kids, they have a right to be uncomfortable with that. Would their Beverly Hills counterparts be comfortable with her heading a fundraiser for them. Probably not. Just because people are poor, (and the the kids are in need) doesn't mean the attitude should be "let them be glad for what they get".

I am not "crucifying you" for your opinion (everyone is entitled to one, even hypocrites). If the parents are that concerned about this, why don't they actually be a parent, and discuss the situation with their kids. By being interactive with them about everything, instead of trying to make believe everything that is wrong or immoral in this world doesn't exist. The children will benefit greatly if their parents would actually sit down with them and discuss why they feel the way they do.

Do you honestly think that by banning a former porn star from reading to them, the children will grow up completely oblivious to the world of porn. Last thoughts; Upon re-reading the afore mentioned posts by Michelle Rose & kevin above (like myself at times) it is apparent they weren't thorough in reading all that was said in posts made by others before making reply.

First of all I wonder what it was in my post that made MRose fly off the handle and become so violent and hateful; I have to believe someone has an axe to grind in general about issues of self worth or confusion as to what is really good or right in the world and regrets decisions that were made in the past. Though some would desire the world accept diviant sexual behavior the fact remains that though some may try to juststify it not everyone will take every piece of bait that comes down off the side of the boat, you can lead a horse to water........

Secondly both made this an issue of "biblical proportions" when no mention of the Bible was made in my original post; to assume that someone who questions deviant sexual behavior or unnatural affection is a "Bible thumper" or "religious fanatic" is going out on a limb, and while I may be a God-fearing man my post was based on common sense. I agree with kevin in that parents should talk to their children about constructive lifestyles, I never suggested otherwise. I also agree we can not hide the world from our children but there is another side to the story. My point is that a child should not look up to or be exposed to role models whose lives usually wind up on a dead end street in one way or another. How many of Hugh Hefner's victims are still in the spotlight after the passing of time? After decades Mr. Hefner is the big winner and most of the women that sacrificed their bodies for the pleasures of a season now find themselves on the outside looking in. For instance if the woman in the story made a positive impression by her personality or physical appearance there might be a possibility that in the future a child might consider an opportunity in the sex trade, pornography etc. based on how it worked out for someone they perceived as charming and beautiful seeing only the outward appearance and not experiencing the heartache that comes with making bad choices and the price some pay for fame. For every "success" story there are countless others who wind up in a heap of trouble, their self esteem and emotional life destroyed. And though the money and publicity seems attractive for now, I wonder if such will remain the same for the "porn star" in years to come. Like all pretty girls the woman in the story won't always be beautiful or have the features she enjoys today, she will grow old like everyone else; and then what, another episode of "Sunset Boulevard"?

Thankfully for now the parents in this story still have the power to decide who will be making impressions on the lives of their children, and while opinions vary and some parents will make bad choices concerning their kids and exposure to the sickness of pornography, I hope most will do otherwise. I feel there is a legitimate concern here, the lives of innocent children are at stake!

realitycheck- Your continuing to cast judgment on her. Her past maybe immoral, I'm not going to dispute that, but she made a choice to remove herself from that lifestyle. She is trying to make a better life for herself, and help inspire children to learn. Maybe, instead of focusing on mistakes she has made, you should look at the good she is trying to do. It's not uncommon for ex-drug addicts to talk to kids about the dangers of drugs, why is it so hard to accept she is trying to change her life, and who knows, may even give talks in the future to young women about the dangers of the porn industry. You are correct about bringing up her or anyone else's past, motive is the key word here and their aren't enough facts to go around. Though it may seem otherwise, from the beginning I was mainly concerned with the welfare of the children. As pointed out in previous posts my concern is for how a child might be affected and or influenced down the road. If Sasha wants to read to children for their sake great, do so without dragging the porn star name and reputation along, do it without the media covering "the story" and plastering it on-line or in the papers! However this works out, the rights of the parents to oversee their children must not be infringed. Also I wonder if there would ever have been a "story" without the pornography slant, face it how many folks self included would have viewed a story about "Sally Smith" an unknown reading to school children? It is my sincere hope that she is trying to get away from the past but she needs to cut all ties and start anew otherwise it's all just talk.

I'm sorry for referring to you as a "bible thumper", it just really bothers me to see people put another down for something that is in the past.

Our children's role models should be the parents, if parents start teaching their children at a young age, good moral values, and instill a sense of worth in their children. The children are less likely to turn to drugs, or other deviant behavior despite any outside influences that would lead them down the wrong path.

Unfortunately, many children do not have a strong home life, and/or grow up feeling worthless turning to behavior that society deems immoral. Most are unable to pull themselves out of this cycle by themselves, but every now and then one is strong enough to do just that. I'm not saying Marina is that strong one, I don't know her personally, but she did break away from it two years ago; and though, she may not be the greatest actress, she is trying to remain in acting without going back into porn.

The media has a hard a time letting someone live down their past. They are the ones making a bigger story out of this then it needs to be.

I am all for separation of church and state and I would have no objection to "a well known Jesus follower" reading to kids in public school. Just as Ms. Grey did not discuss pornography with the kids, I would expect the Jesus follower not to discuss religion with them. And, really, I do understand the strict constructionist meaning of the Constitution non-establishment clause. In the 19th Century some states, reading it that way ("Congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of religion...") passed laws establishing state religions. This was eventually struck down by the Supreme Court when it broadened the interpretation of the 1st amendment to apply it to the states as well as to Congress.

Sam, the issue with a religious person coming in to read a book is that I'd seriously doubt they'd come in to read something entirely secular, and in normal attire. If a pastor came in to read something like "Good Night Moon" or "Guess How Much I Love You" then it would be wonderful, unless they came in the collar.

I am a parent. The parents who complained are prudes and hypocrites. Then again, I studied Sociology in college (if it had a better bill-paying potential it would have been my major) as well as *gasp* HUMAN SEXUALITY (which also covers how the reproductive system works, childbirth, contraception, STD's...). This country was founded by PRUDES and we have never quite gotten away from that background.

People profess to be loving/forgiving people based on religion and then proceed to show that those WORDS are just WORDS - not lessons taken to heart. They proceed to show that morals don't encompass mistakes and don't allow for forgiveness. What this teaches our young people is that THEY better never make a mistake or they will never be forgiven. THEY better never make a questionable career move or they will never be allowed to grow and move past it. They want their kids to not know how they were conceived ... I guarantee that EVERY SINGLE PARENT who complained has HAD SEX ... tho they may not have enjoyed it or admitted to enjoying it. They probably even have had sex without it being for the purpose of conceiving a child. I know my husband and I practiced and practiced and practiced conceiving a child - and we continue to practice it even though my husband was snipped over 2 years ago.

It has been stated many times in this thread, that Americans are generally prudes. I agree. The biggest problem with this is, such fear and loathing of human sexuality has contributed to general ignorance on the subject. Kids get into trouble (pregnancy, STDs, etc.), because they have no clue what sex is about, other than what their own bodies are SCREAMING at them (I want sex!) and what their friends are telling them (sex is cool). Parents refuse to acknowledge that their little angels have sex drives (HELLO! They're human, aren't they?), therefore they NEED to be educated on the subject. Otherwise, the only way their natural curiosity is satisfied is through EXPERIMENTATION! Is the really how you want your kid to learn about sex? Part of me wishes this lady HAD talked to the kids about her past. Maybe she could have dispelled some myths and taught them some VALUABLE lessons about the risks and consequences of being sexually active - something too many parents REFUSE to do.

I have two young daughters, and I try VERY hard to keep open communication with them. (They're pre-teen now, so you can imagine how hard it is getting them to talk about anything.) I want them to know what exists in the world, what to expect, what is happening within their own growing bodies, and what responsibilities they MUST face as a result.

There is no better protection for your children than knowledge.

Hell, as long as she was dressed completely, was not showing "moves", and was nice and polite, there is no difference between her and most new teachers fresh out of college. Seriously, this is why kids have issues, and end up going to extremes the first chance they have away from their parents. I think people need to just TALK to their kids rather than hide their kids from life. What if she had a kid in that school, and joined the PTA? What would you have done then? Tell her that her type isnt welcome into the group called "parents". Being a parent is a thankless job only if you are looking at it through fuzzy goggles. Everything about it reaps thanks. We each have our own days that our kids and spouses make us breakfast and baby us. We get cool handmade presents (the best kind if you ask me). Saturdays are a family day, where we get to hear about the nonsense that is kids, and it makes me smile. I got to see 3 girls cuddled up with their father at 7:30 this morning, and I was kicked out of bed for it. That might make some sad, but it makes me smile because I know they love him, and he loves them. Its written all over their faces. And his. The thanks you get is that look of total love and respect from a 2 year old when you give her kisses when she gets hurt. THAT is thanks enough.
