No it is not!! What I want to know is why this is not domestic violence? Then the state should prosecute under domestic violence laws already on the books!
I think the sheriff is just lazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you. This is assault on a senior citizen and in most states the sheriff can file charges on behalf of the victim, and he should have. Being forcibly held down is akin to being kidnapped.
Charges should also be filed on the woman who held the grandmother against her will.
This is getting out of hand. The world is standing on its head when the Amish are misbehaving so terribly.
Mullet and his clan are white trash in the Amish community. They were chastised by local Amish elders for some reasons, not all of which the media shy Amish community has shared with the police. Rumors are rampant among non-Amish neighbors.
Meanwhile, old man Mullet has ordered his followers to retaliate with the hair cutting attacks against the elders who judged against them and also against their own immediate family members who sided with the judgments. Very un-Amish behavior. They are thugs who depend on their victims to not press charges against them, which would go against Amish tradition. But surprisingly, a few victims have pressed charges.
My question to the police: Even without the victim pressing charges, can't charges of domestic violence, elder abuse, and even kidnapping (restraining the latest victim's wife) be sought?
On a side note, must not be much crime with the Amish. The Sheriff's department was 'closed' for the holiday? Wonder if they have a 'gone fishin' sign on the front door? I can't imagine what would happen in my city if they did that.
Thanks Vermontmike and Dave.. ROTF I love the warrior comment.. I can grow my stache out like Yosemite Sam.. I love folks with a sense of humor.. Don't be jealous Debra of the hot woman stache.. ;)
Yes tragic his family did this to him but I'm thankful that they didn't kill him, so i can in turn make light of this.. I'm just glad it's not another dead or missing baby article..
For a man to turn on his father and destroy him to his core takes a lack of humanity it is hard to fathom. That is very similar in charactor to a gang requiring you to kill your mother to prove your loyalty to them. For a man's wife and children to partake and to force their grandmother to watch is depraved beyond imagination.
There is a lot of joking going on about this but imagine something so fundamentally part of your belief system to be stripped from you. This is equivalent to tar and feathering, public flogging, or perhaps the old scarlet letters guilty people were forced to wear in public. It is totally about public humiliation and degradation and removing their sense of selfworth. There is nothing funny about this cruelty.
If you want no part of the Amish community, you are free to leave. There are no locks to keep you in.
I can tell you this, no son of mine would humiliate me that way not not expect to spend time in jail. He sure as hell wouldn't appear anywhere in my will afterward. But then again, I'm not Amish.
Are you saying Betty's statement was that the attack was "like some abstract concept that I just made up"? If you're going to say that one thing is like another, it doesn't make much sense if that other thing you're comparing against is imaginary.
Or are you just hurling insults for no apparent reason?
betty-What gang makes you kill you mother to show your loyalty, please post the link from where you got your information because it sounds like made up BS to me.
As this is not funny but you in fact contribute to this mess with your lies.
Rick, you telling Bill and Howie to look up obtuse and abstract thinking is like one of those spelling bees where they make you eat a dictionary in order to win. It just ain't right.
Betty, good points. I did try and imagine an Amish guy, fresh home from a barn raising, logging onto newsvine and reading your message that he was free to leave. Having a hard time squaring that one up.
I wonder what his screen name would be?? (I'm not making fun, I just can't picture it.)
hey you mean they can read a license plate? all that trash in ohio needs to be buried. Hey you and your lousy buggies. Come and play with the big boys. I will teach you a thing or two.
I doubt it; generally, you can't teach bigoted stupidity. It's something antithetical to both intelligence and education. Teaching someone a thing or two tends to reduce it, not enhance it.
I really wish the people of this country...would not persecute others because of their beliefs. I am not Amish, nor Mormon, but leave them the hell alone people... Now if they are raping children as the idiot marryin 12 year olds, or making women marry certain men get involved for goodness sakes. Otherwise leave them to their own beliefs... I am not into polygamy but as long as it is adults and they are all in the plural marriage willingly, leave them alone. I have been watching sister wives, i think they are better people and parents than a lot of the single wife and mother marriages...
But Debra, the point is they didn't leave the old man alone with his beliefs. They illegally restrained him and cut off his beard. That is a form of kidnapping and assault.
If God tells me to not cut my beard, there is no shame in my enemy cutting it. A beard can be pride too... I'm not justifying bad behavior, I'm just saying it's not shame, it's pride...
The beards tell if your married or not as well as the membership in the church , so it can be rather embarrassing to the men , the woman can hide the hair cuts they are getting with bonnets .
How heartbreaking to hear of such a peaceful people being fundamentally attacked. The damage the son, and his family has caused goes further than the physical attack on the father, what about the grandchildren who were instructed to help? They have been taught to fight to the core dirty, abusing elderly people they should show respect to. I hope that one day what they have been taught by their father comes back to haunt him. Until then, depending on the children's ages, why are they not being taken into state custody for abuse? Why has the state not stepped in because the parent's involved these children in a hate crime, and elder abuse? I wonder who would get custody of the children is they were taken away? Maybe the grandfather, wouldn't that be interesting.
That would be the best possible thing for the children, to be given to the grandparents, and taught the true way of their heritage. And your right the State does need to step in....
So surprised that god fearing religious people with firmly held beliefs could become irrational and cruel towards those they have minor diffferences with.
ALL religion is ALWAYS about control and conformity. If you don't believe IT you can just go to hell.
@unpublican----You are assuming those causing the trouble and inflicting the cruelty are actually god fearing religious people with firmly held beliefs.
Do you have a PhD in religion? You also assume ALL RELIGION is always about control and conformity. How many religions have you actually studied?
It's the corrupt in religion that make it repressive. Its when being spiritual becomes religion that things become about control. I will always befriend a spiritual person, and I'll always be wary of a religious one.
There is no difference between a religious fundamentalist and a religious extremist.
The core of Hindu belief is searching for knowledge. It doesn't tell you what you can and cannot do, it just suggests what you should and should not do to further your path toward a greater understand of all things.
The core of the Christian faith is love. Through the years it's been twisted by many to make the love selective. It teaches hate along side love which I believe is far from what God wishes of his children.
So why does the sheriff not leave them alone. The Amish have always sorted these things out amongst themselves. They do not need, nor desire the assistance of the rest of us. So lets leave them be.
Physically attacking someone is not "sorting it out amongst themselves"...An old man cannot fight back against a crowd of younger people. This is getting to the point where the law needs to step in....
who really cares in the end. Nothing against the Amish but we keep seeing this story about beard cutting. How many people were murdered in the US today alone and were rehashing this old crap? Odd news priorities.
This drives home the point that the definition of harassment is not what the attacker says it is- but how it makes the person attacked feel.
I keep my hair and my beard short- so having someone decide to forcibly trim me back would probably end up being hilariously farcical- and I'd be laughing too hard to fight back much.
But to these guys and a few other groups around the world, cutting your hair off is a very serious assault on dignity and status.
It's almost as invasive as rape- yet there's no specific statute on the books regarding it.
There may be shortly- this is clearly coming to a head.
The outside world to these Amish people are forgetting the base value of their type of living.
1) FORGIVNESS this is a biggie in the bible, in their belief system.
2) Family is family. You ONLY turn your back on them when they denounce Christ and his ways.
3) Outside help is NOT on the agenda. They will NEVER allow outside help to come in and make the decission for them.
4) And the most important...............These people live on FAITH. They whole heartedly believe GOD will step up and finish this in the end. Not a police officer, not the FBI. GOD will save their day. This is what they have spent centuries believing, and excuse the pun.... No mullet will change that.
There seems to be a snake in the garden. I am sure this is not the first snake that convinced good godly men to go rouge.
I will pray for them, oh... and to admit some of what was being said was funny.. the clomp clomp..snip snip drive by clippings was funny, and what would an Amish newsvine name be?? Thats easy....Horseless...hehehe...
Go spread some love around people, make it contagious!!!
I agree the sheriff needs to arrest the son and the dgtr in law and put the children in custody of the protective services. That would be a warning to the rest of the clan to halt their activities.
The story is about deception and elder abuse. Imprisoning someone against their will is akin to kidnapping. Assault, no matter where you are (in the USA, at least), is a serious crime.
If the Sheriff had chosen to act, there are laws concerning this sort of thing in every state...and in most states it's The People vs. Whomever; no individual has to "Press Charges." This Sheriff may have been catering to his community, or trying to keep out of what he considered to be a "religious dispute," or whatever, but those are just excuses.
That Sheriff was both morally and legally obligated to step in, regardless of the wishes of the victim or the community, and arrest all parties concerned. That, my friends, is the bottom line.
Oh, and by the way, while I'm morally outraged about the Sheriff's dereliction of duty, and all the rest, I still think it's okay to joke about it.
What a shame that The Mullett clan struck again! I wonder if their mission is to give the Amish victims mullett haircuts, and make them drive el caminos instean of buggies? Its an abomination!
Grandpa needs to arm himself. Why not shoot to kill? Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. You can't get something for nothing --except an EBT card!
You actually do need the victim's permission in most places, and for good reason. In Virginia you can get into a fight with your own brother and they can legally throw you both in jail and the state will file assault charges even if neither of you want to press charges.
arteu, rightfully so. Adults have no business getting into physical fights unless it's to defend themselves. Bystanders have been injured by trashy people throwing punches. This isn't a "family matter" either, if families can't get along they can part ways.
The Amish will not fight back, will not defend themselves and will not procecute. They are the perfect victim. The law cannot protect them. Someone nearby with a conscience, but outside their community, has to teach these peoplle what it feels like to be a victim. It has to be done the old fashioned way.
Well, I could care less about these bums, they don't pay taxes and they don't have to sign up for selective service. Nothing more then modern day welfare. And, I know people who have died for this country, do they?
They do pay taxes. You are wrong. They have to sign up for selective service, However they are allowed just like the rest of us to declare themselves conscienous objectors. They practice self halp among their group. They rely on each other for insurance. If an Amish man's barn burns down his fellow Amish will throw a barn-raising and help him build a new one.
The Amish are self supporting, they don't collect welfare or ss. They do a lot of construction and furniture manufacturing and are hard working, honest and cheap. You have to go pick them up and bring them to the jobsite tho; keep your windows open. They make some mighty fine jelly, too.
modern day welfare in the Amish HA HA HA you apparently don't know much about them . You will never see an Amish person in an assisted living facility ,they take care of them out of their own pockets .
Aawww that poor old guy! Having his own little @!$%# grandchildren holding him down too, that just ain't right!
No it is not!! What I want to know is why this is not domestic violence? Then the state should prosecute under domestic violence laws already on the books!
I think the sheriff is just lazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AK Randy -

Prosecuting would not be showing love to your enemy. There is no shame in having your hair cut. The shame all goes to the son.
Agreed......this is not right AT ALL!! I would think this would be along the lines of domestic violence.
Attacking your father and having your kids help is beyond wrong.
They should comb the brush til they bag all these mad clippers.
Does anyone find it humorous that a man named Mullet is giving haircuts?
very
Mullet and his clan are white trash in the Amish community. They were chastised by local Amish elders for some reasons, not all of which the media shy Amish community has shared with the police. Rumors are rampant among non-Amish neighbors.

Sooooo. . . let's hear what the locals are saying. Do tell. Because the media sure as hell isn't going to do so.
You are totally right, the sheriff could file a number of charges but he is a BUM to lazy to do his job. This could be a HATE crime as well!
He should be brought up on charges of dereliction of duty!
Nice, a white trash Amish clan whose leader's last name is Mullet. If only they were the originators of the haircut...
mullet. isn't that a fish.
Interesting that this attack has anything to do with the church. Holding a man down and cutting his beard off isn't legal.
One of the main tenets of the Christian faith and the Bible is following the law.
Fail to do that and you fail to be a Christian no matter what church you attend, be it Amish or Catholic.
Actually goldfish, cutting his beard is illegal! Its called assualt with intent to disfigure. It is a felony in most states.
saying "isn't legal" and "is Illegal", is exactly the same thing.
On a side note, must not be much crime with the Amish. The Sheriff's department was 'closed' for the holiday? Wonder if they have a 'gone fishin' sign on the front door? I can't imagine what would happen in my city if they did that.
All I can do is weep.
You would be mad too if your car was a horse's ass!
Assault with a deadly trimmer..
When i don't want to wax my stache I can claim I'm Amish growing it out to go to heaven?
Not funny!!!!
thats the funnies @!$%# I have heard.
that's pretty funny calico.
Amish don't have stashs...sorry...it a sign of a warrier
Thanks Vermontmike and Dave.. ROTF I love the warrior comment.. I can grow my stache out like Yosemite Sam.. I love folks with a sense of humor.. Don't be jealous Debra of the hot woman stache.. ;)

Clip clop, clip clop, clip clop, clip clop, snip snip, clip clop, clip clop, clip clop...
Amish driveby trimmings!
Funny!
We got censored by the Newsvine police that don't like opinions that are different from theirs or the fact we have opinions.. BooHoo
Someone really has to interview a group of old guys at the nearest small town bar. That's the side of the story I want to hear.

What gang has ever required that? I've never heard of such a thing, and don't see any web sites discussing it.
Abstract thinking, Howie. Try it sometime.

i was subject to one of those spelling bees. i couldn't finish my "P's".
I think your crude jokes are incredibly crass and inappropriate. You are not funnyt.
I so agree, not funny, and shows a lack of intelligence on their part!
Yes, I'm disgusted as well. I'm getting tired of uncollapsing so many comments - almost missed one.
Those are the best ones, aren't they!

Crazy is as crazy does
Some of these posts gave me the best laugh of the day, so far. :) Thanks to sirlafalot and Henry...
On a serious note, how shameful to wrestle an elderly person (a relative, no less) to the ground. That is domestic assault.
yeah. it is shameful. they are cowards.
You can't call Henry and Sir cowards.
