I agree with you. This is assault on a senior citizen and in most states the sheriff can file charges on behalf of the victim, and he should have. Being forcibly held down is akin to being kidnapped.
Charges should also be filed on the woman who held the grandmother against her will.

Mullet and his clan are white trash in the Amish community. They were chastised by local Amish elders for some reasons, not all of which the media shy Amish community has shared with the police. Rumors are rampant among non-Amish neighbors.
Meanwhile, old man Mullet has ordered his followers to retaliate with the hair cutting attacks against the elders who judged against them and also against their own immediate family members who sided with the judgments. Very un-Amish behavior. They are thugs who depend on their victims to not press charges against them, which would go against Amish tradition. But surprisingly, a few victims have pressed charges.
My question to the police: Even without the victim pressing charges, can't charges of domestic violence, elder abuse, and even kidnapping (restraining the latest victim's wife) be sought?

Someone really has to interview a group of old guys at the nearest small town bar. That's the side of the story I want to hear.
For a man to turn on his father and destroy him to his core takes a lack of humanity it is hard to fathom. That is very similar in charactor to a gang requiring you to kill your mother to prove your loyalty to them. For a man's wife and children to partake and to force their grandmother to watch is depraved beyond imagination.
There is a lot of joking going on about this but imagine something so fundamentally part of your belief system to be stripped from you. This is equivalent to tar and feathering, public flogging, or perhaps the old scarlet letters guilty people were forced to wear in public. It is totally about public humiliation and degradation and removing their sense of selfworth. There is nothing funny about this cruelty.
If you want no part of the Amish community, you are free to leave. There are no locks to keep you in.
I can tell you this, no son of mine would humiliate me that way not not expect to spend time in jail. He sure as hell wouldn't appear anywhere in my will afterward. But then again, I'm not Amish.

I really wish the people of this country...would not persecute others because of their beliefs. I am not Amish, nor Mormon, but leave them the hell alone people... On a serious note, how shameful to wrestle an elderly person (a relative, no less) to the ground. That is domestic assault.

How heartbreaking to hear of such a peaceful people being fundamentally attacked. The damage the son, and his family has caused goes further than the physical attack on the father, what about the grandchildren who were instructed to help? They have been taught to fight to the core dirty, abusing elderly people they should show respect to. I hope that one day what they have been taught by their father comes back to haunt him. Until then, depending on the children's ages, why are they not being taken into state custody for abuse? Why has the state not stepped in because the parent's involved these children in a hate crime, and elder abuse? I wonder who would get custody of the children is they were taken away? Maybe the grandfather, wouldn't that be interesting.
That would be the best possible thing for the children, to be given to the grandparents, and taught the true way of their heritage. And your right the State does need to step in....

This drives home the point that the definition of harassment is not what the attacker says it is- but how it makes the person attacked feel.
I keep my hair and my beard short- so having someone decide to forcibly trim me back would probably end up being hilariously farcical- and I'd be laughing too hard to fight back much.
But to these guys and a few other groups around the world, cutting your hair off is a very serious assault on dignity and status.
It's almost as invasive as rape- yet there's no specific statute on the books regarding it.

The outside world to these Amish people are forgetting the base value of their type of living.
1) FORGIVNESS this is a biggie in the bible, in their belief system.
2) Family is family. You ONLY turn your back on them when they denounce Christ and his ways.
3) Outside help is NOT on the agenda. They will NEVER allow outside help to come in and make the decission for them.
4) And the most important...............These people live on FAITH. They whole heartedly believe GOD will step up and finish this in the end. Not a police officer, not the FBI. GOD will save their day. This is what they have spent centuries believing, and excuse the pun.... No mullet will change that.

I agree the sheriff needs to arrest the son and the dgtr in law and put the children in custody of the protective services. That would be a warning to the rest of the clan to halt their activities.
The story is about deception and elder abuse. Imprisoning someone against their will is akin to kidnapping. Assault, no matter where you are (in the USA, at least), is a serious crime.
If the Sheriff had chosen to act, there are laws concerning this sort of thing in every state...and in most states it's The People vs. Whomever; no individual has to "Press Charges." This Sheriff may have been catering to his community, or trying to keep out of what he considered to be a "religious dispute," or whatever, but those are just excuses.
That Sheriff was both morally and legally obligated to step in, regardless of the wishes of the victim or the community, and arrest all parties concerned. That, my friends, is the bottom line.
Oh, and by the way, while I'm morally outraged about the Sheriff's dereliction of duty, and all the rest, I still think it's okay to joke about it.

You actually do need the victim's permission in most places, and for good reason. In Virginia you can get into a fight with your own brother and they can legally throw you both in jail and the state will file assault charges even if neither of you want to press charges.
You still need to establish who did it - either by eye or physical evidence. It's not really a matter of permission.
arteu, rightfully so. Adults have no business getting into physical fights unless it's to defend themselves. Bystanders have been injured by trashy people throwing punches. This isn't a "family matter" either, if families can't get along they can part ways.
The Amish will not fight back, will not defend themselves and will not procecute. They are the perfect victim. The law cannot protect them. Someone nearby with a conscience, but outside their community, has to teach these peoplle what it feels like to be a victim. It has to be done the old fashioned way.

The Amish are self supporting, they don't collect welfare or ss. They do a lot of construction and furniture manufacturing and are hard working, honest and cheap. You have to go pick them up and bring them to the jobsite tho; keep your windows open. They make some mighty fine jelly, too.
