If the recent election in "progressive", modern"Tunisia is an indicator then Syria will go down to the orthodox Muslims. A democratic election will usher in the faction(fraction) with the most votes. Since they don't have a tradition of social egalitarian democratic values or mind set that embraces the thrust of the American Bill of Rights we can expect more of the same for Syria. Indeed when viners were wringing their hands over the Elections in Tunisia possible rejection of a progressive democratic government we had posters claiming "how dare you give us advice" using the strongest COH ban-worthy language. Oh course no one was telling anyone how to vote. Just "worried about the outcome" That was all it took. Maybe that is why the present government does not have a plan and never had one to begin with. Look a Egypt. The media was rumoring for years the future of Egypt was an un-known. After all Mubarik was older than dirt. What were the National Security wonks gettting paid to do(?) launching potatoes, pumpkins and water-balloons off the roof of the NSA building?

It doesn't matter whether we approve of the groups taking over Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. The simple truth is it had to happen. Dictatorships can't survive forever in modern society. At some point the masses will break free and go their own way. We don't have to like it, but we do have to accept it as the natural progression of things.
Hopefully, eventually, these new democracies will morph into the modern world and we can get along. We weren't getting along with Gadhafi or Assad so there's not much lost there anyway. Let's just hope they don't go the way of Iran.
I partially agree, I believe we should have just ignored the revolt in Egypt. When they had overthrown the dictator good for them and lets see if we can work something out.. Instead first thing we did was jumped on the band wagon and demanded our allies ouster.. Not so good..
Iran (our enemy) we completely ignored the revolt until the very last protester was taking his last breath before we even mentioned it.. We should have been strongly supporting them on the international scene, like we did in Egypt..
Libya so far it seems to be going pretty good, I didnt think it would. I think we should have just left them alone. Yes Gaddafi was a monster but his son next in line was very pro western and wanted to bring freedom to the people.. If we would have waited in a few yrs, his son would have taken over and everything would have turned out ok..
Also we did get along with Libya, how else did they find all those CIA and state dept papers in the office buildings? We should have been focusing on Assad who happens to be killing much more protesters than Gaddafi was..
What gets me is the liberals were all for Gaddafi pitching his tent in NYC but were the first ones who wanted him dead..

When the protests over Rodney King got out of hand, the government had to step in and establish law and order. Plenty of people died in that mess.

The more the Assad regime tightens its fingers around the discontented peoples of Syria, the more that these people will slip through their Allawite fingers like sand through a sieve.
The foundations of this nation state are crumbling. There will certainly be problems and ramifications for the entire region. Syria is indeed a fault-line between Arab and Kurd, Arab and Christian and the all-too familiar Sunni-Shiite divide within Islam.
It wont be pretty and many people will die, but the Assad regime is only hanging on with help from Iran and diplomatic and possibly military support for Russia and China. These are strong friends indeed, but these nations are also suffering their own discontented populations.
We'll see how this all plays out over the next 18 months. The Syrian regime is well insulated with a loyal guards corp and enough loyal elements in the Sunni dominated army that they still play a strong hand.
Whenever they round up the protesters and throw them in prison, they are sealing their own fate.

If they cling to power even though most people don't like their government then they must be removed.

I really don't know how to respond Jungleboogie. I regularly leave the USA for Thailand and Costa Rica for pleasure and sometimes business. I've never been prevented from leaving our nation by impediments such as landmines or American soldiers or other uniformed personnel acting in a thuggish manner similar to that of the Syrian regime.

Jungleboogie, You need to read Thoreau. Every American has the right and duty to protest. The Constitution thrives on crisis. But it is also the responsibilty of a protesting individual to take responsibility for their actions. King understood this and his jail time was a badge of honor, worn proudly and effectively.
The brats in OWS who break the law do not want to take the responsibity for their actions and are, therefore, breaking the covenent with the Constitution to protest. (I hardly call public masturbation or molesting woman a form of protest.) As a matter of fact, NYC has been overly accommodating to the OWS protests.
Essentially, if all protesters in the USA were to be jailed, we would all be in jail. (Maybe that really IS the way that it is, wwe are on the inside looking out.)
