In planting land mines on his border, Assad is simply planting more seeds that will lead to his own destruction! Besides, the location of the mines have probably already been photographed from space as they were being put in, or a high altitude Global Hawk recon UAV has been watching them.
If the recent election in "progressive", modern"Tunisia is an indicator then Syria will go down to the orthodox Muslims. A democratic election will usher in the faction(fraction) with the most votes. Since they don't have a tradition of social egalitarian democratic values or mind set that embraces the thrust of the American Bill of Rights we can expect more of the same for Syria. Indeed when viners were wringing their hands over the Elections in Tunisia possible rejection of a progressive democratic government we had posters claiming "how dare you give us advice" using the strongest COH ban-worthy language. Oh course no one was telling anyone how to vote. Just "worried about the outcome" That was all it took. Maybe that is why the present government does not have a plan and never had one to begin with. Look a Egypt. The media was rumoring for years the future of Egypt was an un-known. After all Mubarik was older than dirt. What were the National Security wonks gettting paid to do(?) launching potatoes, pumpkins and water-balloons off the roof of the NSA building?
U.S. is gonna invade soon, they'd best mine the borders lol, as though that's gonna be the deciding factor
No we arent, Assad hates us and is allied with Iran, quite frankly I wouldnt be surprised if we are supporting him in someway.. Judging from operation gunrunner and etc.. Pretty sad..
It doesn't matter whether we approve of the groups taking over Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. The simple truth is it had to happen. Dictatorships can't survive forever in modern society. At some point the masses will break free and go their own way. We don't have to like it, but we do have to accept it as the natural progression of things.
Hopefully, eventually, these new democracies will morph into the modern world and we can get along. We weren't getting along with Gadhafi or Assad so there's not much lost there anyway. Let's just hope they don't go the way of Iran.
It doesn't matter whether we approve of the groups taking over Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. The simple truth is it had to happen.
I partially agree, I believe we should have just ignored the revolt in Egypt. When they had overthrown the dictator good for them and lets see if we can work something out.. Instead first thing we did was jumped on the band wagon and demanded our allies ouster.. Not so good..
Iran (our enemy) we completely ignored the revolt until the very last protester was taking his last breath before we even mentioned it.. We should have been strongly supporting them on the international scene, like we did in Egypt..
Libya so far it seems to be going pretty good, I didnt think it would. I think we should have just left them alone. Yes Gaddafi was a monster but his son next in line was very pro western and wanted to bring freedom to the people.. If we would have waited in a few yrs, his son would have taken over and everything would have turned out ok..
Also we did get along with Libya, how else did they find all those CIA and state dept papers in the office buildings? We should have been focusing on Assad who happens to be killing much more protesters than Gaddafi was..
What gets me is the liberals were all for Gaddafi pitching his tent in NYC but were the first ones who wanted him dead..
it only took four dead in Ohio to end our "revolution". Since then the HIGS (hoolums in government) have figured out how to apply universal credit card debt and "total criminalization" upon the masses.
Jungleboogie, you are an idiot. If a protested is abiding the laws and ordinances of a city they do not get arrested, howver if they do brreak the law then they pay the consequences. Syria kills protesters, so if you believe that Syria is betterr, go ahead move and protest for a day or runtil they put you in the ground
When the protests over Rodney King got out of hand, the government had to step in and establish law and order. Plenty of people died in that mess.
So we are going to start invading when this sort of thing happens in other countries?
We need more proof than a few CIA chumps like Allawi and Chalabi in Iraq. We've been down this road before with WMD.
The 'new' democracy in Iraq is slaughtering Christians, and the Jewish minority have long fled the country. Yeah, great democracy there. All we did was remove a secular state and install an Islamic state.
Yeah, if you want me to visit Syria then you go move to Iraq. Guaranteed you will be lucky to only have a bullet between the eyes within a week if they don't torture you first. Great "DEMOCRACY" there.
Any one want to bet we stick our noses into this mess ???
Why don't they just let their people flee ?? They will return after the fighting stops. The fewer people left in the country the fewer Assad has to fight. If every one leaves the economy will calaps . Unless Assad digs deep into his ill gotten piggy bank . We all know that will never happen.
The more the Assad regime tightens its fingers around the discontented peoples of Syria, the more that these people will slip through their Allawite fingers like sand through a sieve.
The foundations of this nation state are crumbling. There will certainly be problems and ramifications for the entire region. Syria is indeed a fault-line between Arab and Kurd, Arab and Christian and the all-too familiar Sunni-Shiite divide within Islam.
It wont be pretty and many people will die, but the Assad regime is only hanging on with help from Iran and diplomatic and possibly military support for Russia and China. These are strong friends indeed, but these nations are also suffering their own discontented populations.
We'll see how this all plays out over the next 18 months. The Syrian regime is well insulated with a loyal guards corp and enough loyal elements in the Sunni dominated army that they still play a strong hand.
I really don't know how to respond Jungleboogie. I regularly leave the USA for Thailand and Costa Rica for pleasure and sometimes business. I've never been prevented from leaving our nation by impediments such as landmines or American soldiers or other uniformed personnel acting in a thuggish manner similar to that of the Syrian regime.
The sky is a different color in your universe. Best of luck to you.
Ah yes, now I see Anthony. You've never actually been a protester . Good for you. You had no problem with the 4 trillion in taxpayer handouts or the 3 trillion in wars. You are fine with the current economy. You firmly believe there was WMD in Iraq. You don't think about worrying about the protests in our own freakin country before starting a war over someone else's protesters.
Enough with the wars. We should be taking care of business here at home.
Yep outside of the hole in the sand you are in the universe for the rest of us has a great color called reality.
Why the government jailed you? for protesting, or for "violating" the rules of the protest?
I see that you still can publish whatever insanity you want and the "State Police" din't come for you.
And since you never lived in Syria, how can you compare the same situations, when you have a roof over your head, a hot or cold plate of food over your table and a computer to post your spew...
Go over there, walk over in their shoes and try to find out if we are the same....?
Sometimes I'd love that we have for once one of those dictators here in America so Americans can understand the real meaning of "Freedom".
Jungleboogie, You need to read Thoreau. Every American has the right and duty to protest. The Constitution thrives on crisis. But it is also the responsibilty of a protesting individual to take responsibility for their actions. King understood this and his jail time was a badge of honor, worn proudly and effectively.
The brats in OWS who break the law do not want to take the responsibity for their actions and are, therefore, breaking the covenent with the Constitution to protest. (I hardly call public masturbation or molesting woman a form of protest.) As a matter of fact, NYC has been overly accommodating to the OWS protests.
Essentially, if all protesters in the USA were to be jailed, we would all be in jail. (Maybe that really IS the way that it is, wwe are on the inside looking out.)
Like Kennedy said (more or less) Democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to build a wall (or a land mine field) to keep people here.
So your 'plan' is to invade every dictatorship in the world? You sound just like another neocon stooge.
Most of the reports of deaths are unverified, and are reported by the 'revolutionary groups' in Syria. You have no problem believing Syrian protesters.
Yet American protesters you say are molesters and perverts.
Where are all the lefties, commies, anti-Semites, etc. AND the Arab Countries in this latest BS from the medieval Middle East? Surely it's all Israel's fault. Some POS will try to spin it that way. So convenient to always have a fall-guy to blame things on to detract from the real culprits. Let the nauseating propaganda begin!
Personally, I think this is a good thing. I love land mines and claymores. I say seal off the boarders of every middle east country with mines, and maybe these people will start behaving like human beings for a change. Nah.
We should seal off your home with claymores and clak you when you come out in the morning. Seriously, what kind of attitude is that? The pro-democracy opposition is being threatened by land mines and you get on your high-horse like some special king-baby characterizing their fight for freedom as non-human. You jerk!
So if it makes me a "jerk" to go "We have no business minding other peoples' business" then so be it. We can't even manage our own government, we have no business messing with someone else's.
OK Assad, here is a clue. If people want to leave the country let them go. Those are the ones that don’t like you and then you end up with more of the people staying that do like you. Wouldn’t this be easier than keeping them in the country to only turn and join the resistance you are trying to squash out with these inhuman attacks, kidnappings, assaults and killings?
He is to the Syrian people who fight for their rights and freedom! More power to all of you for standing up for what you believe is right and against this tyranny Assad has continued for years.
Is it helpful to the rebels to have their communications network revealed? Is it helpful to US foreign policy to have it widely known that the US State Department is assisting the rebels? I hope this is not an indication of the Jeraldo Rivera-style reporting we will be getting on the show.

being slightly conservative myself, i agree with sam adams, you should think before you speak
now if we could only hire a few of their military people to put them on the mexico boarder. No one , would then dare go to the boarder.
Sounds like a good idea to me.. While you are at it how about get them to plant a few landmines up and down Wall Street!
It's "border" you dimwit!
Sounds like America could take a lesson from them on border security.
don't forget the parks that the occupy guys are camping out in.
