Peter I must say it has been a pleasure. You are a worthy advisory, but I still disagree with your approach to this matter. Iran is much like a bee ready to sting. We swat at the bee to get it away so it doesn't sting us and if given a chance we would kill that bee before it stings us or family or friends. We have made the proverbial swat by placing sanctions on Iran. It hasn't worked. If you can come up with an idea that would save American lives without an attack I'm all ears. I just can not see any other way right now to keep Iran from getting the material they need to finish the bomb other than killing that bee(attack the lab). Those of us that have never been active in a war, are going to come up very short with our arm chair analysis.

What can we agree on? Is Iran a huge threat? Has anything we have done to punish them worked? Some yes the sanctions have made a difference. I really don't know because I am not privy to classified information.

It certainly seems that many in the ME are wary or Iran knowing if they get the bomb, the others will be forced to do so as well to protect themselves against those that have the bomb.

I may be all wrong here, but it would seem to me that if Israel really believed Iran was close to making the bomb, they would by now have acted because they would have nothing to lose. Nobody likes them anyway including most of the members of the UN. The thing is Israel and Palestine are so closely situated that it seems unlikely that using a nuclear bomb would not eradicate both.

But what Peter seems to not get is that even if we do as he suggests and let Iran make the first move, what is to stop the leftist liberals currently running this administration from apologising to Iran and saying it was our fault for inciting the Iranian government to attack us. As you said, an attack on us would most likely be nuclear in nature, after they hit Israel of course. I don't think that is such a far fetched scenario given the current administration's past track record in dealing with Muslim counties in the Middle East.

I think we were absolutely justified to go into Afghanistan in 2001 and remove the Taliban from power, but why we're still there in 2011 escapes me. The biggest problem we've encountered in Afghanistan is ignorance; when women, men, and children (young teens) are willing to die for the cause they've been educated in believing in, but educated in naught else, it's simply not going to ever end.

I've no idea what they're really being told; so many point to the X number of virgins, religion, etc... and that may be part of it. But there may be much more they're 'educated' on that however fantastic, is believed because they've no other model or information source. Isolated instance, a couple by us got divorced, the man from the ME.... he insisted on bringing his son back with him to the ME and it had to be before he was of school age as he HAD to learn and TRAIN with him in the ME. He took him illegally, none knows what happened to him, but now hindsight gives some insight....

This jack drove a bomb into a military convoy, with ARMOR, and was able to succeed.... heck of a bomb. A woman blew herself up. These suicide attacks cannot be combatted; when one's convinced they'll literally die for a cause, how can that ever be erradicated or combatted?

Saddam had used WMD's on his own people, to the tune of 180k dead; seems the WMD's worked rather well. He was also given 3-4 months notice that the US would be coming, and I do remember seeing truck convoys exiting Iraq, some heading to Syria in these months.

We killed some of the world's most dangerous men and saved many lives, but if the Taliban takes over it will just continue. What we need to do is FIGHT. Stop making our troops be so careful. They aren't allowed to retaliate at all and are put in very vulnerible positions while standing in streets, crowded with possible insurgents. If our presidents and leaders wouldn't tie our generals and soldiers hands behind their backs the Taliban would probably be destroyed already. There may have been more civilians lost, but in the long term this would have saved more lives, American and Middle Eastern. I want out troops home, but not if it means the country goes back to the way it was, all for naught. Take a year, allow our soldiers to be soldiers and do what they do. Kill our enemies. Stop putting them in such vulnerable positions. God Bless America.

My neighbor, as well, has been deployed to Afghanistan 2 times; he leaving very soon. Something draws him there, as this time, I think he wants to go. He also has a young family.

If we have to eradicate all Muslims, we would have to kill all Muslims all over the World; Muslim, as you know, is the largest Religion.

My problem is, how long will US Military have to stay there to get rid of all of them? The US would have to be everywhere in the World.

We are flooded here in the US with big Muslim families--not all Extremists. They will propagate here, and possibly taking over the US in many 100's of years.

What do we do about this?

Your question regarding what to do with muslims is the key to the problem. Sadly, very few are willing to take the time to ask the question, "what do we do with them?".

My answer may not be the "politically correct" one, but it is the right one. Not based on what I think but rather what history teaches us and what that religion demands. Our governments have proven themselves to be cowards when it comes to standing up to defend the people who elected them. We are not dealing with a peaceful people who immigrated into the west but rather a cult of savages who are moving in to do as their religion demands, to destroy. Believe it or not the best way to begin by halting this disease is to shut the doors of immigration to them. Period. If you have a house that is full of flies you don't burn the house down. You shut the open door! Then, you proceed to knock off the flies one by one until they are gone. I'm not implying killing anybody but I am suggesting throw them out! The government has the power and ability but they don't have the will. Islam is a cancer in this world and they want to dominate it. In fact, if you read that cursed book called the koran you clearly read that muslims are called "the best people" alive. Does this remind you of something else that happened not 70 years ago? This is the next "master race" taking over.

I am passing this along as a warning. It would be unethical, immoral and criminal of me to make any of this up unless it's 100% true. The soldiers in afghanistan and iraq (from all nations) deserve our respect for what they are doing. As a free people we must understand that freedom is NOT free. It comes with a very high price and unless you are willing to stand up and demand that these animals be removed from our shores then prepare to witness your freedom stripped away bit by bit. With islam, that means you will see the blood of innocent men, women and children used to strip your freedom away.

You may be thinking that you know muslims who are nice and friendly etc. Do not be deceived. The koran says "deceive your enemies (non muslims) and when their guard is down, destroy them". Killing (murder) is mandatory. There is no such thing as an innocent person in the eyes of muslims. Well said Simon. I would love for our men and women to come home, but doing something like this puts more Americans and people in danger than if we didn't. Middle East Muslims are not happy with us and once we leave Iraq it becomes a breeding ground for more Holy War propaganda. They will come to us. We are in a bad position, but we need to make the best of it and try and fix the problem, rather than just run. My thanks go out to our soldiers, I am newly married, I felt as though I wanted to join the military, but decided I need to take care of my wife and daughter first. When I first read the article, there were three dead. Now there is 13 reported dead. I would say that part of the contributing factor is that there are no seat belts and that some riders are allowed to stand where there is a lot of passengers. Granted, everyone is supposed to be wearing their kevlar and heltmets, but there is no requirement to wear flame resistant hoods or gloves. Can't speak for Baghdad, only time I've been to Iraq was GW1, and that was over so quickly I didn't get time for much signseeing, but I did see plenty of churches in Iran and Syria. Damascus actually had loads of statues of Jesus all over the place, which was quite cool. Davset, I'm a vet and can guarantee the recruiters paint pictures of honor and medals. Outside of military legacy, (Flag officers kids) you NEVER see a rich kid marching in mud. Yes it's a volunteer force, but often it's because they have no other options and no chance at a future, it's a socio economic issue with honorable intentions, so too speak. ustupidamerican is dead right, our soldiers come home in boxes or worse missing limbs and suffering from mental anguish that no 18 year old should EVER endure. I doubt you've ever taken a life, let alone pulled a weapon with intent in your eyes. trust me, no matter how justified you feel, the image will never ever ever escape you. It is still a volunteer organization. I volunteered when there was a draft. I left home at eighteen and got back home four years later, no hero, no major medals. I grew up there, many thousands of miles from home. Thank God for the military in my case, I think it would do wonders for the listless youth of today to serve. Many of those I served with became mayors, some worked careers with civilian intelligence agencies, many were children of successful families. My point is that we were a cross section of rich, not so rich, and in my case rather poor. I hold no hatred for the successful people, God knows America needs successful people. That is how we got to the point of the best country for the most people in the world.

Afghan grows the poppy. Saigon was the port of exit for the $40 billion per year opium crop that was grown in the "golden triangle". The CIA is in the worldwide drug business and they ordered Kennedy (and Johnson) to feed that war in order to salvage that opium crop. It does not matter who is president, that person will do as the CIA directs or the CIA will kill them. We are in Afghanistan for the poppy and we will be there until that question (who gets the poppy) is answered. We lost the Saigon poppy crop because of public opinion, and we will eventually lose the Afghanistan poppy crop for the same reason. Hopefully we will lose that ideology before 55,000 of our young men and women are killed (as in Vietnam). The death toll in Afghanistan is rising. Being the most powerful country in the world, don't you think we could end that war in a military fashion in a few hours? We could defoliate the poppy crop, nuke the Taliban, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, or the entire region. Why fool around and get more Americans killed. Let the generals win the stinking war and get out.

The difference between these wars and Vietnam is this: We don't like the war but we love and support the troops. During Vietnam, troops returning home were treated poorly and that was just plain wrong. Now they are treated like the heroes they are.

went back to Nam last year and also Laos. Lots more pro American feelings there than in Europe. For members who served there a trip back would be an eye opening experience. They are not a 3rd world country anymore. Many there are looking forward to ending communist rule. Its capatilism at its finest. They want American made goods, they dont like or want Chinese stuff. They want a US base in Cam Rahn Bay. Airports are beautiful, new planes, great staff on the planes, and of all things Vietnam Airlines are part of the Delta flying program.

Many have suggested that occupying a country is not a good idea - in the invasion of Afghanistan the US got Afghan allies to participate in the attack. Some suggest that now is the perfect time to pull out. Then if the Taliban take over - wait a bit - then get those Afghan Allies and attack. But this time make sure the Taliban are surrounded and wipe them out. But - don't occupy - pull out when the job is done. Keep aircraft and drone surveillance on the Pakistan Border and kill anyone that tries to cross it in either direction.
