I would be willing to agree with OWS if they simply said one thing: Simplify the tax code.
Nobody seems to realize, all the corporate-pay-to-play and lobbyist-influence comes from the complicated tax code. Politicians write bills with complex loopholes, add to the tax code, and that's where the money is coming from. If there were a 10% income tax on all people making up to $100k, and 20% on every dollar over $100k, a 15% corporate tax, and a 10% VAT, there would be no place for loopholes. It's my 10-20-15-10 plan. Tax code could be reduced to about ten pages, not 20,000 pages or whatever it is now. We don't need *more* government programs and *more* government spending.

Yes, you heard me. The very wealthy 1% didn't get their money all by themselves. They got rich by owning companies that have THOUSANDS of delivery trucks tearing up the roads that *MY* tax dollars paid for. Those companies make incredibly heavy use of police, fire departments, our court system and, indeed, EVERYTHING that our tax dollars pay for.
If you get rich by owning a company that uses the commons many thousands of times for every time I do, then I don't think I'm out of line to ask you to pay much higher taxes.
Also, if the 1% wants a decrease in government regulation, then they should stop doing jaw-droppingly evil things that can only be stopped by regulation. In short, take responsibility for your own actions. If you're not willing to do that then don't complain when people ask for regulations to compel you to stop acting like a five year old.

1. Let's talk about the tobacco industry doing everything in their power to dispute sound science showing that smoking causes cancer. Why? Because they would rather see thousands of people die than to lose a little of their precious money.

This comment demonstrates everything that frustrates me about the OWS movement. Do you realize that most of those businesses that are being disrupted are small businesses? Small business owners are not in the 1% - most live month to month just like everyone else. The financial losses that they may realize as a result of people camping and littering in front of their doors have the potential to be devastating. Small business owners used to be, and still can be, the middle class in this country. Most economists would agree that it's these small businesses that fuel economic growth in this country - not the mega corporations.

They do not want any footage for the Justice Department to pinpoint individuals that violate any persons constitutional rights. The next step is to take the cities and police departments to court for violating our rights.

For all of the money that they have spent living on public property (at least NYC), they could have rented a public auditorium or other place where conventions are held and had a rally to air their grievances without all of the additional trouble.

All of this criticism over OWS is not new or even special. This same rhetoric was used during all of the protests over Vietnam. They were staged by groups simliar to OWS. In the US they have a constitutional right to do this. How does anyone think that the authorities can repress this? The Solidarity movement in Poland did it under Communist rule, protests were held in Russia during Communist rule, several regimes in the Middle East have been overturned by protests and the Syrian protests are continuing even though many have died fighting for change. So again, how will these protests be stopped or contained in America? The Marine vet in Oakland is just one of the first whose injury will further strengthen these protests. I will not be surprised if some of these protestors will end up killed, this when the majority in the US will demand change and look for politicians heads to roll.

First, the US Constitution is the highest law of this land. The Bill of Rights gives all American citizens the right to assemble and protest our governments actions. Occupy is asking for:
Campaign finance reform so that corporations could not buy OUR politicians;
Repeal of the Citizens United rule that designates corporations as 'people';
End to wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and no further involvement in foreign countries until the needs of Americans have been addressed;
Stop spending American taxpayer money on foreign countries, and instead use that money to help America to repair our failing infrastructure, build schools so our children can get a decent education, take care of our seniors who have to choose between food and medicine;
Bring down the cost of health care so that more Americans can afford it;
Close tax loopholes for all, from the top to the bottom;
Make college education more affordable so that more middle class Americans have a chance to improve themselves.

They are the individuals who create laws/etc in a manner that goes against the Constitution's restraint on the three branches of our government; plus destroys or weakens the Rights of the people as guaranteed by the Constitution.
The description describes a huge part of our current (and previous) administration.
So why am I accusing all of being Domestic Enemies? Because Not one of them has kept the Oath as they are required to do to keep the office/position they are currently in. The POTUS takes an Oath to "Preserve, Protect, and Defend the US Constitution". He has done the opposite of all three. The rest take an Oath to "Support and Defend the US Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic... " They have either actively went against the US Constitution, plus tried to dump our Constitutional Rights which makes them Domestic Enemies of the USA. The rest passively allowed it to happen.
Operation Gunrunner (Fast and Furious) for example. Supposedly Obama, Holder and others did not know until recently about it. Unfortunately in 2009 a press release from POTUS Obama about the funding shows that to be a lie. First he tried to pass H.R.495, but it didn't pass. So next he he rolled into the stimulus package a month later.H.R.1 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, "$10,000,000 shall be transferred to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses for the ATF Project Gunrunner". That makes POTUS Obama, Holder, and the rest Traitors, Domestic Enemies, and Murderers under our laws. Traitors and Murderers for getting weapons to a foreign enemy who then used the weapons on our soil to kill American Citizens.
None of this administration, including the Supreme Justices are legally in office/position anymore. Once they did not keep the Oath, they lost the ability to legally remain in office/position.
So, the choice is ours, "We the People..."; do we allow them to continue to destroy our country, our Constitution, our freedoms, or do we have them removed from office? Prosecute the ones who actively went against the US Constitution/our own Country, and stop the one who allowed it from ever serving again, loss of citizenship (for all of them), and kicked out of the USA.
Ro, the only health hazard is our current medical system and trade agreements that only benefit the wealthiest at the expense of both the exporter and us the importee. Our wages stagnate and finally drop or simply no wage at all and they are exploited-- if wages increase there, they ship it to somewhere else. Pleanty of people to exploit around the world.
And when it all comes crashing down, the wealthiest will still have enough wealth to weather the storm.

Yes, you heard me. The very wealthy 1% didn't get their money all by themselves. They got rich by owning companies that have THOUSANDS of delivery trucks tearing up the roads that *MY* tax dollars paid for. Those companies make incredibly heavy use of police, fire departments, our court system and, indeed, EVERYTHING that our tax dollars pay for.
Road taxes are paid every time you put fuel in your car or a commercial delivery truck. Just to let you know, Class 8 trucks, (better known as 18-wheelers), make up about 3% if registered vehicles but pay about 40% of all road use taxes. That does not include what the Class 6-8 vehicles pay, those are the small semi's and straight trucks. So please, we do pay our fair share of road taxes.
Everything else you complain about is all funded from local and not federal taxes, so at least know how those entities are funded before you complain about federal tax dollars.
This country is becoming more and more like a third world country that attacks it's citizens and doesn't allow them their freedom of free speech. Remember this on election day. I WILL>
I was listening ot MSNBC last night and they were upset that not one Wall street executive had been prosecuted to date. I laughed for an hour thinking that it is Eric Holder's job to do so if he felt they should be prosecuted. But his boss (Obama) will make sure they are not prosecuted because all of them are his supporters. Then Obama gets behind the OWS people who are wanting his financial supporters to go to jail. Maybe the liberals should look into the mirror once to see who are the evil they are protesting.

Wizard, I think you should dig a bit deeper. Funding for firefighters and police does come mainly from local and state taxes but are subsidized by federal funds, too. Federal revenues are down since "W the Divine" cut taxes for the rich. My property taxes and sales tax rate were increased just to keep the police and fire protection at the level we had before "W the Divine" was elected. And the police officers' and firefighters' wages have been stagnant, just like the rest of the "working class".

To say that the constitution only applies to the federal government and not to the states or local governments is taking us back to pre-civil war constitutional thinking. Our constitutional rights can not be violated by government on any level: federal, state, or local.
It is quite a commentary when we treat our protesters the same way or worse than they are treated in Tunisia and Egypt, countries we look down on because they are dictatorships.

For the record, I don't necessarily condone tear gas or water cannons. There shouldn't be unnecessary violence anywhere in the world...ever. But, saying what is happening here is the same or worse as what happened in Egypt is dramatic and inflammatory. And, simply, not true.

Explain exactly how we are not governed by a majority? We, the people, elect representatives by a majority consensus. When people get a popular opinion, that tends to change the voting habits of those representatives (look no further than the Civil Rights movement).
To expand the majority thought, laws are passed through both houses of Congress (and similarly in all states) by a majority vote. Rulings are determined by the Supreme Court by a majority consensus.

"Peaceful assembly" does not give you the right to create shanty towns or obstruct the Rights of other citizens to use and enjoy the property, private AND public.

A Republic is the equivalent to the Majority Limited. Under the Constitution safeguard are implemented to protect the Rights of the ultimate minority, the individual. A Democracy, on the other hand, is the Majority Unlimited, where majority, or mob, rules. Under a Democracy the ultimate minority, the individual, has no Rights. The Framer's made explicit mention of this at the Federal (framing) Convention in 1787 and warned about the Tyranny-by-Majority and the "excesses of democracy".
You also need a refresher as to the other thing they feared: the tyranny of ONE.
They may have made laws to limit the reach of mob-rule, but they fought a revolution to limit the laws of individual rule.

The Occupy Wall Street folks are asking that security be tightened because thieves and the homeless are now showing up at the camps, stealing valuables and taking advantage of the free food and blankets. In other words, they're redistributing the wealth and the protesters are complaining! LOL

Using gas, water cannons, and potentially lethal force against people for "suspected unlawful tenancy" is a clear violation of the First Amendment. Any opinion to the contrary is idiotic.

Guy, have you people made the notifications that FaceBook is now mining NewsVine and selling the information to authorities? This started in London and has spread to New York, Oakland, Chicago and most probably others. FaceBook is actually selling the information about people using the social media and "affiliated sites" (which includes NewsVine) to the police and the information has already been used in Manchester, England to send numerous people to prison.
When you quoted the first amendment, you mentioned the word peacably. Throwing rocks and bottles negates their first amendment rights. They are not being peacable.
I wasn't there during any of the crackdowns, however, it is my understanding that in Oakland, some of the people began to throw rocks, then the cops came in and began to make arrests. Well withing the legality of the constitution if that is the case.
As for Nashville, I completely disagree with most of the Wall Street movement, but I disagree with them making the curfiew law. However, that is also within their rights as a government to change laws. The people in those parks are allowed to speak and assemble, as long as there are no laws being broken.
If the park has posted hours or there is a law stating that parks close at dusk (for example), then after dusk, those people are breaking the law and can be arrested for trespassing. If they want to gather on a public area (like sidewalks or a lawn), they are welcome to.
In my opinon, peacable also means that a person is not breaking laws.
It amazes me just how clueless some of you are about the OWS movement. The banks successfully lobbied the government to remove regulations that protected America, and then they abused the system to enrich themselves leading to the crash of the real estate market followed by the economy.

I am not asking the rich to give me anything for free. I just want back the $75,000 in home equity that was taken from me, and the six figure income I had as a contract television engineer/real estate developer. I moved out of my home two years ago and accepted a job earning less than half what I used to make just so I could put food on the table.
The only government assistance I have received is the IRS is allowing me to make payments with interest on part of my 2009 taxes for 3 years. There were no tax breaks for lost equity. There was no unemployment insurance that would have allowed me to stay in my home.
Two years later Bank of America still has not finished the process. They took possession of my home last May, but still have not told me if they are going to accept my offer of Deed-in-lieu or just foreclose. I just got my fourth “Workout Negotiator” this week.
While I struggle to pay taxes on an income I no longer have, I see the government giving money in battery rebates to people who can afford to buy a $40,000 hybrid car. It’s like some backwards Robin Hood story.
I don’t expect much understanding from bank investors, or renters whose jobs were unaffected. The system works for you. But those of you who lost your home equity or have lost your jobs, I would expect you to understand what OWS is all about.
It should be no surprise that the majority of the OWS protesters are young unemployed people. If I didn’t have to work to provide for my family, I’d be there too. I am grateful for these people. They represent people like me better than anyone I helped send to Washington.

You say the government is at fault for the housing bubble - I agree, but for very different reasons. You say the private sector is not at fault - I disagree.
You offer up the infallibility of the free market, then condemn the government for failing to enforce the regulations on that free market. If the free market worked as theorized there would be no need for regulations at all, much less bailouts. If it takes an economic crisis of this magnitude for the free market to regulate itself, then it is already too late and far too high a price.
Only one other time in US history have we faced an economic situation as grave as this - October 24, 1929. The government did as you would have had us do - nothing. They believed in the free market. After all, they had no reason to doubt it. For their faith, they received roughly a decade of unemployment at around 20%, massive deflation, 9000 bank failures, and a 50% reduction of international trade.
We, on the other hand, can not claim ignorance. Our Republican president at the time did the opposite of what his predecessor did some 80 years ago, he gave the banks everything they wanted. Now, whether his decision was right or wrong is not 100% clear. I personally believe there was a better way to manage the crisis, but what was clear was that he could not do nothing. We have seen where that road leads.
The government is at fault for repealing the regulations that would have prevented this crisis. It was a Democratic administration. The new Democratic party had jumped into the pocket of big business, following on the success of your namesake. Prior to the 80's and 90's, Democrats had stood for government regulation of the private sector - Ralph Nader comes to mind. However, the Democrats bought into the lie and were persuaded by campaign contributions from the same business they should be regulating. They let this happen (additional responsibility lay with the Bush administration for not fixing it when they had the chance). This begs the question: Who will regulate the private sector if Democrats or Republicans won't? The private sector answers: We will!
The government deserves blame, but not more so than the private sector. They claimed to be able to regulate themselves, that government regulations were unnecessary and restrictive (much as you claim). They have proven themselves false. Who will regulate the private sector if Democrats or Republicans won't? Answer: nobody.
Of course, there can be too much regulation - I will acknowledge that. Apologies for corrupting a famous quote but, pure capitalism is the worst economic model, except for all the others. However, I believe that we can improve on that model by adopting elements of socialism and government regulation. In fact, we already have. Many of the elements of our society that make us stand out in the world come from a blend of capitalism and socialism. Let's not move backward. A hybrid economic model based on capitalism and socialism seems best.

There is no one person that can truly speak for each person's reason for participating. Each one has been affected by a different aspect of the "Greed Machine". There are common themes however, that have come through as a result of extensive debates among the protestors. One such theme is a desire to remove corporate power from politics by removing access to corporate money by politicians. We, as a people have been conditioned to believe that you must have money to be in politics. This is simply not true - IF the system is changed. By removing profit from politics, only the people that have a sincere desire to move the country forward will delve into politics. Political ads should be free, and limited by frequency and quality of content. Wasting money on smear campaigns is futile. Only private donations excepted, and a limit on the dollar amount per private citizen. Career politicians will by nature, become extinct. Each candidate will have to hold a job, before AND after their service. There should be no one holding a public office that has not been an ACTIVE participant in the same social and economical system sustained by the people they represent.
The economy is not fixed, clearly. However, that doesn't mean it hasn't been getting better. The stock market has roughly doubled since its lowest point in 2008. Unemployment is steady - not good, but it could be worse. Unemployment is the slowest indicator to respond to positive economic factors because employers do not want to invest in new workers if they have to lay them off again in a matter of months.
Look at some graphs for the stock market during the great depression. It keeps getting worse and worse until around 1933. After 1933 we see improvement. I know the stock market isn't the best or only barometer of economic health, but I'll give credit where credit is due.

I disagree with you here. I don't believe anyone serious is advocating an ever-expanding government controlling everything we do. Rather, they are advocating for responsible regulation of irresponsible business practices. I feel the fear coming from the other direction. They try to tell us that if we allow the government to regulate businesses, the next thing we know, we'll be living in Soviet Russia! The advocates of regulation don't have to spread fear, it is evident from our situation that regulation is necessary. It's the opponents of regulation who are spreading fear - fear that the government will somehow take over our entire lives.
I'd be careful about holding up pre-1913 business practices as the best economic model. Federal child labor laws weren't created until 1938 for crying out loud! Prior to 1938, such laws were declared unconstitutional because it denied the children their right to contract their own labor! I mean, that's really twisting reality, "We're doing this for the children, not for the businesses benefiting from low wages" (children got paid significantly less than adults). Not to mention it isn't even correct. Teddy and Taft busted those monopolies up pretty good before 1913. I bet those monopolistic tycoons were saying much the same thing you are. Free market, etc., etc.

The judge's comments would seem to imply that once given the opportunity to comply, this judge would find them guilty of disobeying that new law. He wasn't saying that the law violated their rights, only that they had not been given sufficient time to comply with new rules.
I don't remember any teabaggers arrested when they disrupted the town hall meetings. The first ammendment should apply to all. So should being arrested for being disrupting.
The police are defending the corrupt system because they are part of it. Even if a cop knows what they are doing is wrong, they dont care because they are only a cop for the retirement pension. Police are no longer people you can count on, no matter what city. If they were out protecting the camps, then all would be good. Another point - in Houston there was a lovely couple that would cook meals and bring them down to the city park to feed the homeless. They paid for everything, nothing came from the city/government. The local city administration had them removed because they didn't purchase the permit needed to give out food on city property, yet this same administration allows OWS to continue without permits. Kind of makes your head hurt.

Nowhere in this entire article did anyone ever say they did not have the right permits! The state implemented a curfew on Thursday and on Friday morning at 3 am they enforced it! Even if they had a permit, which I dont know if they did or did not, it would not have mattered!

But it is "Believable" once People start looking at what is really going on here and how so many People have been fraudulently misled (and shown, as here in this article) that they better believe it, or else. How many obviously don't get it that it's not a "Chicken or Egg" conundrum and that "The Constitution", and the RIGHT of the People, undeniably came first; (Way well before 2011); no tit-for-tat; no six ways "to" Sunday questioning; it's six ways "from" Sunday (The Constitution) questioning.

Madison: I thought Mayor Bloomberg was supposed to represent all the people, not just those that you agree with. They do in fact have a right to peaceful assembly. From what I have been able to make out of the videos I have seen are an overly zealous police force attempting to subdue those that are trying to exercise their first amendment rights. I would be just as incredulous to their actions had the police been in such strong support of the liberals and it was the Tea Party that was getting jack-booted.

First of all, I work 2 jobs by choice to make a comfortable life for my family. How many children I have is certainly none of your business either. NHLucky- I appreciate what the unemployed are going through. I don't think it is easy to find a job in this market. I am one of the lucky ones. My comments were stated as a generalization of a lot of people, some of whom are friends of mine, that if the government is going to allow them to stay on unemployment, then they will accept it.
These people that are protesting are not looking for work. They are using an excuse not to work. What do they expect to receive from these protests? $50K+ jobs? Free healthcare? Student Loan forgiveness?
I do believe I would find a job within a month because I wouldn't pigeon-hole myself to one thing. If I had to stock shelves, flip burgers, cut lawns, shovel driveways, I would do it. I do have a family and I would do whatever it took to make sure I could provide for them.

The Napoleonic we call a mayor here in NYC has said time and time again that as long as the protestors don't break any laws, they'll be left alone. Well, let's see...they're squatting in a park, they've held marches without the proper permits and blocked traffic, they're urinating and defecating in doorways (according to those who live and work within the boundaries of Community Board 1 in NYC, which is the zone where Zuccotti Park is located), they've injured police, and they've engaged in drug use. Hey Mayor Mikey...sound like a few laws are being broken. Don't stop with confiscating their generators and fuel...get them out of the park completely.

That means it time for the government to step in and squash the freedoms of the people. It's pretty easy to sling a statistic like that around without really knowing what it means. For example, how many of that 47% are either children, students, or elderly? Or, was the number calculated by some formula that approximates the number of people living in a household and multiplies by the number of returns filed with no tax due? In other words, are we talking about hard data or not?

Protesters had asked the state on Wednesday for more help with security. There has been some theft from tents as well as reports of marijuana being sold and lewd behavior in the area.
Occupy Nashville protesters blamed those incidents on a homeless population that has joined them on the plaza because of the availability of free blankets and food.

The occupy movement is about civil disobedience, not getting "permission" We dont need permission to occupy public spaces to voice grievances, it is the 1st amendment to the US Constitution.
Let's take that one step further. Since most professional sports stadiums are owned by the city or the state, anyone can occupy them any time and extend their stay through scheduled sporting events. The Constitution allows them to stay indefinitely. Or anyone can occupy an interstate highway, or any public road for all that matter, and block traffic indefinitely. Only children believe there are no boundaries.

The current polarization of social activism in US reminds me of the situation in 1920's Germany, where international socialists (communists) and national socialists (nazis) fought street battles in order to force their program of reforms. I would be willing to agree with OWS if they simply said one thing: Simplify the tax code.
Nobody seems to realize, all the corporate-pay-to-play and lobbyist-influence comes from the complicated tax code. Politicians write bills with complex loopholes, add to the tax code, and that's where the money is coming from. If there were a 10% income tax on all people making up to $100k, and 20% on every dollar over $100k, a 15% corporate tax, and a 10% VAT, there would be no place for loopholes. It's my 10-20-15-10 plan. Tax code could be reduced to about ten pages, not 20,000 pages or whatever it is now. We don't need *more* government programs and *more* government spending.
To those that oppose the OWS movement, I have a question:
Why do you support multi-millionaire freeloaders?
Yes, you heard me. The very wealthy 1% didn't get their money all by themselves. They got rich by owning companies that have THOUSANDS of delivery trucks tearing up the roads that *MY* tax dollars paid for. Those companies make incredibly heavy use of police, fire departments, our court system and, indeed, EVERYTHING that our tax dollars pay for.
If you get rich by owning a company that uses the commons many thousands of times for every time I do, then I don't think I'm out of line to ask you to pay much higher taxes.
Also, if the 1% wants a decrease in government regulation, then they should stop doing jaw-droppingly evil things that can only be stopped by regulation. In short, take responsibility for your own actions. If you're not willing to do that then don't complain when people ask for regulations to compel you to stop acting like a five year old.
If you want examples:
1. Let's talk about the tobacco industry doing everything in their power to dispute sound science showing that smoking causes cancer. Why? Because they would rather see thousands of people die than to lose a little of their precious money.
2. Let's talk about the bosses that find lame excuses to fire women as soon as they get pregnant.
3. Let's talk about my first boss that paid my pearly white caucasion self nearly twice as much as an African American with MORE experience working the SAME JOB for the SAME RESTAURANT.

Most economists would agree that it's these small businesses that fuel economic growth in this country - not the mega corporations.

The next step is to take the cities and police departments to court for violating our rights.

All of this criticism over OWS is not new or even special. This same rhetoric was used during all of the protests over Vietnam. They were staged by groups simliar to OWS. In the US they have a constitutional right to do this. How does anyone think that the authorities can repress this? The Solidarity movement in Poland did it under Communist rule, protests were held in Russia during Communist rule, several regimes in the Middle East have been overturned by protests and the Syrian protests are continuing even though many have died fighting for change. So again, how will these protests be stopped or contained in America? The Marine vet in Oakland is just one of the first whose injury will further strengthen these protests. I will not be surprised if some of these protestors will end up killed, this when the majority in the US will demand change and look for politicians heads to roll.
Current government officials and big corporations, America's youth is mad, America's middle and lower class is mad. Take notice, change is coming, like it or not. This appears to be a populace protest and there is always change with these types of protests.

First, the US Constitution is the highest law of this land. The Bill of Rights gives all American citizens the right to assemble and protest our governments actions. Occupy is asking for:
Campaign finance reform so that corporations could not buy OUR politicians;
Repeal of the Citizens United rule that designates corporations as 'people';
End to wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and no further involvement in foreign countries until the needs of Americans have been addressed;
Stop spending American taxpayer money on foreign countries, and instead use that money to help America to repair our failing infrastructure, build schools so our children can get a decent education, take care of our seniors who have to choose between food and medicine;
Bring down the cost of health care so that more Americans can afford it;
Close tax loopholes for all, from the top to the bottom;
Make college education more affordable so that more middle class Americans have a chance to improve themselves.
All reasonable requests. The problem is that our government, all three branches of it, are Domestic Enemies of the USA.

The rest take an Oath to "Support and Defend the US Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic... Road taxes are paid every time you put fuel in your car or a commercial delivery truck. Just to let you know, Class 8 trucks, (better known as 18-wheelers), make up about 3% if registered vehicles but pay about 40% of all road use taxes. That does not include what the Class 6-8 vehicles pay, those are the small semi's and straight trucks. So please, we do pay our fair share of road taxes.
Everything else you complain about is all funded from local and not federal taxes, so at least know how those entities are funded before you complain about federal tax dollars.

I was listening ot MSNBC last night and they were upset that not one Wall street executive had been prosecuted to date. I laughed for an hour thinking that it is Eric Holder's job to do so if he felt they should be prosecuted. But his boss (Obama) will make sure they are not prosecuted because all of them are his supporters. Then Obama gets behind the OWS people who are wanting his financial supporters to go to jail. Maybe the liberals should look into the mirror once to see who are the evil they are protesting.

Wizard, I think you should dig a bit deeper. Funding for firefighters and police does come mainly from local and state taxes but are subsidized by federal funds, too. Federal revenues are down since "W the Divine" cut taxes for the rich. My property taxes and sales tax rate were increased just to keep the police and fire protection at the level we had before "W the Divine" was elected. And the police officers' and firefighters' wages have been stagnant, just like the rest of the "working class".

This started in London and has spread to New York, Oakland, Chicago and most probably others. When you quoted the first amendment, you mentioned the word peacably. Throwing rocks and bottles negates their first amendment rights. They are not being peacable.
I wasn't there during any of the crackdowns, however, it is my understanding that in Oakland, some of the people began to throw rocks, then the cops came in and began to make arrests. Well withing the legality of the constitution if that is the case.
As for Nashville, I completely disagree with most of the Wall Street movement, but I disagree with them making the curfiew law. However, that is also within their rights as a government to change laws. The people in those parks are allowed to speak and assemble, as long as there are no laws being broken.
If the park has posted hours or there is a law stating that parks close at dusk (for example), then after dusk, those people are breaking the law and can be arrested for trespassing. If they want to gather on a public area (like sidewalks or a lawn), they are welcome to.
In my opinon, peacable also means that a person is not breaking laws.

I am not asking the rich to give me anything for free. I just want back the $75,000 in home equity that was taken from me, and the six figure income I had as a contract television engineer/real estate developer. I moved out of my home two years ago and accepted a job earning less than half what I used to make just so I could put food on the table.
The only government assistance I have received is the IRS is allowing me to make payments with interest on part of my 2009 taxes for 3 years. There were no tax breaks for lost equity. There was no unemployment insurance that would have allowed me to stay in my home.
Two years later Bank of America still has not finished the process. They took possession of my home last May, but still have not told me if they are going to accept my offer of Deed-in-lieu or just foreclose. I just got my fourth “Workout Negotiator” this week.
While I struggle to pay taxes on an income I no longer have, I see the government giving money in battery rebates to people who can afford to buy a $40,000 hybrid car. It’s like some backwards Robin Hood story.
I don’t expect much understanding from bank investors, or renters whose jobs were unaffected. The system works for you. But those of you who lost your home equity or have lost your jobs, I would expect you to understand what OWS is all about.
It should be no surprise that the majority of the OWS protesters are young unemployed people. If I didn’t have to work to provide for my family, I’d be there too. I am grateful for these people. They represent people like me better than anyone I helped send to Washington.

You say the government is at fault for the housing bubble - I agree, but for very different reasons. You say the private sector is not at fault - I disagree.
You offer up the infallibility of the free market, then condemn the government for failing to enforce the regulations on that free market. If the free market worked as theorized there would be no need for regulations at all, much less bailouts. If it takes an economic crisis of this magnitude for the free market to regulate itself, then it is already too late and far too high a price.
Only one other time in US history have we faced an economic situation as grave as this - October 24, 1929. The government did as you would have had us do - nothing. They believed in the free market. After all, they had no reason to doubt it. For their faith, they received roughly a decade of unemployment at around 20%, massive deflation, 9000 bank failures, and a 50% reduction of international trade.
We, on the other hand, can not claim ignorance. Our Republican president at the time did the opposite of what his predecessor did some 80 years ago, he gave the banks everything they wanted. Now, whether his decision was right or wrong is not 100% clear. I personally believe there was a better way to manage the crisis, but what was clear was that he could not do nothing. We have seen where that road leads.
The government is at fault for repealing the regulations that would have prevented this crisis. It was a Democratic administration. The new Democratic party had jumped into the pocket of big business, following on the success of your namesake. Prior to the 80's and 90's, Democrats had stood for government regulation of the private sector - Ralph Nader comes to mind. However, the Democrats bought into the lie and were persuaded by campaign contributions from the same business they should be regulating. They let this happen (additional responsibility lay with the Bush administration for not fixing it when they had the chance). This begs the question: Who will regulate the private sector if Democrats or Republicans won't? The private sector answers: We will!
The government deserves blame, but not more so than the private sector. They claimed to be able to regulate themselves, that government regulations were unnecessary and restrictive (much as you claim). They have proven themselves false. Who will regulate the private sector if Democrats or Republicans won't? Answer: nobody.
Of course, there can be too much regulation - I will acknowledge that. Apologies for corrupting a famous quote but, pure capitalism is the worst economic model, except for all the others. However, I believe that we can improve on that model by adopting elements of socialism and government regulation. In fact, we already have. Many of the elements of our society that make us stand out in the world come from a blend of capitalism and socialism. Let's not move backward. A hybrid economic model based on capitalism and socialism seems best.

There is no one person that can truly speak for each person's reason for participating. Each one has been affected by a different aspect of the "Greed Machine". There are common themes however, that have come through as a result of extensive debates among the protestors. One such theme is a desire to remove corporate power from politics by removing access to corporate money by politicians. We, as a people have been conditioned to believe that you must have money to be in politics. This is simply not true - IF the system is changed. By removing profit from politics, only the people that have a sincere desire to move the country forward will delve into politics. Political ads should be free, and limited by frequency and quality of content. Wasting money on smear campaigns is futile. Only private donations excepted, and a limit on the dollar amount per private citizen. Career politicians will by nature, become extinct. Each candidate will have to hold a job, before AND after their service. There should be no one holding a public office that has not been an ACTIVE participant in the same social and economical system sustained by the people they represent.

The economy is not fixed, clearly. However, that doesn't mean it hasn't been getting better. The stock market has roughly doubled since its lowest point in 2008. Unemployment is steady - not good, but it could be worse. Unemployment is the slowest indicator to respond to positive economic factors because employers do not want to invest in new workers if they have to lay them off again in a matter of months.
Look at some graphs for the stock market during the great depression. It keeps getting worse and worse until around 1933. After 1933 we see improvement. I know the stock market isn't the best or only barometer of economic health, but I'll give credit where credit is due.
I disagree with you here. I don't believe anyone serious is advocating an ever-expanding government controlling everything we do. Rather, they are advocating for responsible regulation of irresponsible business practices. I feel the fear coming from the other direction. They try to tell us that if we allow the government to regulate businesses, the next thing we know, we'll be living in Soviet Russia! The advocates of regulation don't have to spread fear, it is evident from our situation that regulation is necessary. It's the opponents of regulation who are spreading fear - fear that the government will somehow take over our entire lives.
I'd be careful about holding up pre-1913 business practices as the best economic model. Federal child labor laws weren't created until 1938 for crying out loud! Prior to 1938, such laws were declared unconstitutional because it denied the children their right to contract their own labor! I mean, that's really twisting reality, "We're doing this for the children, not for the businesses benefiting from low wages" (children got paid significantly less than adults). Not to mention it isn't even correct. Teddy and Taft busted those monopolies up pretty good before 1913. I bet those monopolistic tycoons were saying much the same thing you are. Free market, etc., etc.

Those arrested were taken to Davidson County Night Court for booking, but were freed by Night Court Commissioner Thomas Nelson.
"You have no lawful basis to arrest and charge those people," Nelson said to state troopers.
"For three weeks they've sat up there and protested under no admonition whatsoever that they were violating state policy regarding camping out on Legislative Plaza or that they were committing a crime."
He said he understood that the state had changed its policy on Thursday, but "they (the protesters) have to be given the opportunity to comply with those rules."
Its interesting to note that the Iran regieme, along with obama, agree with the OWS demonstrations. It is also interesting to note that the tea party rallys had to pay for the priviledge of protesting but the OWS do not. The judge's comments would seem to imply that once given the opportunity to comply, this judge would find them guilty of disobeying that new law. He wasn't saying that the law violated their rights, only that they had not been given sufficient time to comply with new rules.

The police are defending the corrupt system because they are part of it. Even if a cop knows what they are doing is wrong, they dont care because they are only a cop for the retirement pension. Police are no longer people you can count on, no matter what city. If they were out protecting the camps, then all would be good. They can write all the illegal laws they want, but it is still illegal under OUR Constitution, the highest law of this land. It just made them clearly actively Domestic Enemies of the USA.
We have all kinds of Domestic Enemy action throughout our time as a nation, including putting in the Federal Reserve. Another point - in Houston there was a lovely couple that would cook meals and bring them down to the city park to feed the homeless. They paid for everything, nothing came from the city/government. The local city administration had them removed because they didn't purchase the permit needed to give out food on city property, yet this same administration allows OWS to continue without permits. Kind of makes your head hurt.

Madison: I thought Mayor Bloomberg was supposed to represent all the people, not just those that you agree with. They do in fact have a right to peaceful assembly. From what I have been able to make out of the videos I have seen are an overly zealous police force attempting to subdue those that are trying to exercise their first amendment rights. First of all, I work 2 jobs by choice to make a comfortable life for my family. How many children I have is certainly none of your business either. As for me losing my 2 jobs, I don't see that happening, but if it did, I would certainly pound the pavement and use my resources to find another job. I guarantee that I would not be out of work for more than a month.

NHLucky- I appreciate what the unemployed are going through. I don't think it is easy to find a job in this market. I am one of the lucky ones. My comments were stated as a generalization of a lot of people, some of whom are friends of mine, that if the government is going to allow them to stay on unemployment, then they will accept it.
These people that are protesting are not looking for work. They are using an excuse not to work. What do they expect to receive from these protests? $50K+ jobs? Free healthcare? Student Loan forgiveness?
I do believe I would find a job within a month because I wouldn't pigeon-hole myself to one thing. If I had to stock shelves, flip burgers, cut lawns, shovel driveways, I would do it. I do have a family and I would do whatever it took to make sure I could provide for them.

The Napoleonic we call a mayor here in NYC has said time and time again that as long as the protestors don't break any laws, they'll be left alone. Well, let's see...they're squatting in a park, they've held marches without the proper permits and blocked traffic, they're urinating and defecating in doorways (according to those who live and work within the boundaries of Community Board 1 in NYC, which is the zone where Zuccotti Park is located), they've injured police, and they've engaged in drug use. Hey Mayor Mikey...sound like a few laws are being broken. Don't stop with confiscating their generators and fuel...get them out of the park completely.

It's pretty easy to sling a statistic like that around without really knowing what it means. For example, how many of that 47% are either children, students, or elderly? Or, was the number calculated by some formula that approximates the number of people living in a household and multiplies by the number of returns filed with no tax due? In other words, are we talking about hard data or not?

I'm firmly in the 53%. I have a decent, though not great, job. I struggle to pay bills, but I don't expect an entitlement.
What I do expect? A level playing field. A country where those with the biggest bank balances cannot buy laws favorable to them, and unfavorable or unfair to the rest. Money and religion do NOT belong in politics - both must be removed if America wishes to see a future for her sons and daughters.

If you are happy with you elected officials, you wages, your health insurance, and paying some able-bodied person to sit on their butts, then please continue to spout off. In my experience, police officers have been nothing but professional. I guess my opinion is skewed because I tend to follow laws.

Though I show respect for the police, I find it to be only in order to not have them pull a power trip and threaten me with harassment/arrest. It is not a game I see as a choice. He/She with the Gun and Badge makes the Rules up as they feel quite often.
Fifty years old, and I have NEVER had the need for the cops. Reported a wallet theft as well as having later tracked down the user of the stolen credit cards and the cops said they couldn't do anything to help, despite concrete proof in hand and an address of the thief using them.
I took care of it myself with a few friends.
Pfffft to your statement. I have a job, and am a responsible adult, but have seen Police Brutality several times in my life, and it ain't pretty. I also have a gun, which I have used to successfully defend my self and property, WHILE a crime was under way. Only called the cops to tell them which way he ran and a description. I could easily have shot him, but did not wish to get the Police that involved, due to previous experience mentioned above.

but to have the state rush through laws, then march in and arrest people.. no. Im happy to hear the judges dismissed the cases. that's total BS and only adds a bit more fuel to the fire as it were.

Let's take that one step further. Since most professional sports stadiums are owned by the city or the state, anyone can occupy them any time and extend their stay through scheduled sporting events. The Constitution allows them to stay indefinitely. Or anyone can occupy an interstate highway, or any public road for all that matter, and block traffic indefinitely. Only children believe there are no boundaries.
Or in terms you understand. We don't need no stinking permission!

Good luck in your job search. I have been in the full time work force for 37 years, and in that time I have NEVER been out of work for more than a few weeks. I will be starting my new job in a couple of weeks after 19 months of being unemployed. BTW, I am a professional and have been working in construction for my whole life, rose through the ranks and have been working as a Project Manager for over 10 years earning a very respectable income. In other words, my resume' is top shelf, there are just not very many opportunitys.
Keep trying and dont give up!
