I think it's interesting that people are saying illegal immigrants are taking jobs, but then employers say they are losing workers because of the stricter immigration laws being passed. If illegals are taking up jobs, and stricter laws are getting them out of those jobs, where are all the US citizens who are out of work because of illegals to fill the now vacant positions? We got the illegals out of there. Where are you, Cletus? Come get your minimum wage, 10 hour a day, 7 days a week job. It's waiting for you. What's that you say? You get more money by applying for welfare and sitting on your ass at home all day? Well, hel, let's get Pedro back, then. At least he'll work for what he gets.
Well lets see, would you work for 20 dollars a day picking tomatoes? It's called a living wage for a reason. Most US citizens don't want to live 12 to a run down trailer, do you? But hey their labor is cheap...its the anchor babies, education and health care that gets ya!
What is it about the term "illegal immigration" does MSNBC not understand? Alabama enacted anti ILLEGAL immigration laws. Is there something about that that confuses the talking heads at MSNBC? Do they have a comprehension problem? Is having a learning disability a criteria for working for the two bit news organization which is a mere shadow of it's former self?
While I agree with your comment (and found it somewhat true/funny) do you think Pedro will want to live like this forever? If Pedro were given the opportunity to sit on his a-- and collect a welfare check, reckon he'd take it? Furthermore, isn't it inherently racist to think that Hispanics should be doing the jobs we are too lazy and "good" to do?
Your point does highlight the desperate need for welfare reform.
Nothing wrong with (legal) immigrants who come from third world countries doing minimum wage jobs in the U.S. Illegal aliens are a different story.
Eb85..."isn't it inherently racist to think that Hispanics should be doing the jobs we are too lazy and "good" to do?" What is blatantly racist is that so many Hispanics are given favor over the majority of the world's poor (who are not Hispanic) based solely on geographic proximity. (I could be wrong though, they could also be given preference on how they tend to vote.)
EliMae - sounds like you are just another 'LaRaza Cult Follower' that will say ANYTHING to take attention away from the fact that these people are here ILLEGALLY!
I can just see the illegals starting to flock to Dayton. Sure you're attracting legals. Problem is that with the legals come a crap load of illegals.
Dayton officials say they will leave that to federal authorities and focus instead on how to attract and assimilate those who come legally.
Sounds like code to me. We won't enforce immigration laws, that's the feds job. Here no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Hope all you Ohioans enjoy the infestation you got coming your way. Nature abhors a vacuum.
NOt sure what a bunch of hispanics from Alabama are going to do in Dayton. There are no crops needing picking by hand. The factory jobs all went to NC, ALa, Mississippi, Ga, Mexico, China and Taiwan. But if they can find something worthwhile to do, more power to em. IF they are just going to be refugees there and expect Ohio to pay for their living expenses, whoops, Ohio is broke just like everywhere else. Dayton used to have the world HQ for 5 Fortune 500 companies. Now it is zero. There was a time when NCR alone had 10,000 workers on each shift. Totally gone now. So the jobs that paid for things are gone. Making Tacos have replaced making machines. Does anyone think this will really pay for the cost of living for those doing it ?
Just take the unemployment benefits away. It wasn't designed to be extended for years. Another ploy by Democrats to get a vote. If people have to work, they will. Unemployment allows them to not work. Just waiting for their "old" job back.
Canada had an unemployment problem also a few years ago. They cut unemployment benefits out and allowed their natural resources to be exploited. Their unemployment rates went down to 5%. Now it is somewhat higher, but not as high as ours where we can not use our natural resources to create new jobs and we keep extending the unemployment benefits to facilitate getting votes during elections.
I am sick of the comments like "Americans have shown little interest in the backbreaking, low-paying jobs that were usually held by illegal immigrants." It is a bunch of bull. The problem is not that Americans will not do the work, it is that they will not work for the criminally low wages that these employers are used to being able to get away with paying. They can pay illegals below minimum wage, and definitely way below a living wage because the illegals can not complain. If these businesses paid a decent wage they would have no problem finding people to do the work. Americans want a decent wage and decent benefits. These companies will claim that Americans do not want to do the work to justify employing illegals and to try and convince the government to allow the illegals to stay and give them amnesty. Reality is that this has nothing to do with Americans not wanting to do the work, it has to do with the companies wanting to maximize their profits. And the reality is that if you do allow the current crop of illegals to stay and give them amnesty, they will quit these jobs too. Once they are legal and do not have to put up with it any more, they will tell these employers where to go. Then the employers will just import more illegals they can abuse. It has nothing to do with these people being willing to do this work and legal Americans not being willing, it has to do with them having no choice and no way to complain. The companies that are employing and abusing the illegals should be seized by the government as criminal enterprises. Shutting down the companies that employ the illegals will go a long way towards solving the illegal immigration problem. If there are no jobs, they won't come here.
Joke is on these poor people when they get to the Greater Dayton Area and find there are very few jobs available for anybody. Just moved out of there a few weeks ago because I couldn't find any work at all, flipping burgers or otherwise...and I'm a college grad with a useful 4 year degree. Heck, even in Columbus it is rough. I went to an interview a few days ago for a shelf stocking job and there was a doctor there interviewing for the same thing...
If Mexican workers are going to make us rich, then why isn't Mexico rich?
If Mexican workers make a country rich, why isn't Mexico trying to prevent them from leaving?
If Mexican workers were good for taxes, why are the states with the largest Mexican population in some of the worst shape financially?
Stupid people who make comments like $12.00 tomatoes...... apparently cannot do any mathematics. If you were able to pick ONE tomato every 5 minutes, and were paid $12.00 per hour, then the total labor to pick a tomato is $1. Therefore if there was ZERO labor cost in picking tomatoes and it went to $12.00 per hour and they were so lazy they could pick only one tomato every 5 minutes the price of a tomato would go up by $1.00 per tomato. If they were really hard workers and pick 2 tomatoes every 5 minutes (this is not hard for a senior citizen), then the increase in cost is $.50 per tomato. The person using the $12.00 per tomato is either a DUMBBELL OR LIAR.
If you could pick 60 tomatoes an hour (one per minute...wow) and were paid @12.00 per hour it will cost $0.20 extra a tomato above the price of free labor
The illegal alien population of the U.S. is about 20 million - roughly the population of New York State.
The report asserts that there are between 12 and 15 million jobs in the U.S. currently held by illegal aliens, or about 8 percent of the work force.
Moreover, between 4 and 6 million jobs have shifted to the underground economy since 1990. These are not “jobs Americans won’t do, but rather jobs Americans used to do.“
"On the revenue side, the United States may be foregoing $35 billion a year in income tax collections because of the number of jobs that are now off the books."
"We estimate that approximately 5 million illegal workers are collecting wages on a cash basis and are avoiding income taxes."
"The United States is simply hooked on cheap, illegal workers and deferring the costs of providing public services to these quasi-Americans.
I don't think illegal immigrants can receive welfare of anykind or unemployment, they need a social security card number. If they have one that's not theirs they shall be arrested and deported right away for ID thief. I don't know how they get the medical part though, must be some type of humanity medical rule.
John, they don't need a social security number to get all the welfare the state has to offer. The IRS gives them a number to use so they can apply for all the benefits.
I have to laugh at all the idiots bashing MSNBC for this story. It's from the Associated Press. I guess hatred is blinding your vision but then again right wing nuts never could comprehend what they read.
If you could pick 60 tomatoes an hour (one per minute...wow) and were paid @12.00 per hour it will cost $0.20 extra a tomato above the price of free labor. If they are now being paid $6.00? per hour now(which is below minimum wage), then the cost increase is $0.10 per tomato at a 60 tomato per hour output. If you can pick at a rate of 120 tomatoes per minute, and get $6.00 per hour then the increase in cost paying $12.00 per hour is
A NICKEL A TOMATO . If you go to a restaurant you get about half a tomato in a salad.......2 1/2 PENNIES EXTRA.
Get really sick of hearing how much our food costs are going to go up. In Dayton all they grow is grains. Wheat, feed corn, and soy beans. All are harvested by large machines with no Mexican labor.
Is having our education system go to hell, becoming a dual language country, and paying extra health insurance costs, and all the welfare benefits that go to their 5-7 children, the court system, the jail system etc. is worth more than 5 cents a tomato then grow some tomatoes yourself and sell them for $12.00
Tomatoes are $3.99 a pound and two tomatoes will weigh about one pound so that makes a tomato costing $2 each. Somebody is making money somewhere and it sure isn't the labor because they can pick hundreds of tomatoes in an hour.
The growers are making the money. They get very cheap labor and the public pays the bill for all the services their underpaid workers need and get. If you sell 10 million tomatoes and save just one penny per, it works out to $100,000. The public pays extra medical insurance, extra car insurance, and extra taxes so the grower can make an extra $100,000.
It is just like the phone company. put an extra $0.10 monthly fee on 50,000,000 lines and the company gets an extra $5,000,000 a month, and no one is going to spend 30 minutes on hold to bitch about $0.10 per month.
If Mexican workers are going to make us rich, then why isn't Mexico rich?
But then I thought wait!!!! Mexico isrich...problem is the Drug Cartels and the corrupt Government control the money. We have exported thousands of jobs to Mexio (thank you Big Three Auto and the AWU, Teamsters and other Union bullies) The auto makers went there to harvest the pool of cheap labor and produce vehicles at a lower cost and without the strangle hold placed on them by labor unions) The money they pay the locals is far better then available in other areas of Mexico but it does not appear to be helping their nation at all. And the Drug Cartels are controlling much of the police forces.
When are common everyday Mexicans going to stand up in mass and reclaim their nation? No that will not happen - they have been under the thumb of the drug cartels and beat down by the corruption I doubt they have the energy to think beyond now . I wonder how many are waiting for LaRaza, LULAC and MEChA/ Aztlán groups to take over the southwestern US? Those groups, under false pretense , feel that THEY have rightful ownership to the land since it was stolen from Mexico in the first place. They conveniently forget little things like Texas won it Independence fro Mexico in 1936 and it was not just the white settlers who fought the battle for freedom...for every white settler there were hundreds of Hispanics who fought along side them. And several Native Americans groups also took part in the battle for our freedom from Mexico. The areas like California and the other areas were made part of the US through various treaties, purchases of large tracts of land and grants.
MEChA is an Hispanic separatist organization that encourages anti-American activities and civil disobedience. The radical members of MEChA who refer to themselves as "Mechistas," romanticize Mexican claims to the "lost Territories" of the Southwestern United States -- a Chicano country called Aztlan. In its national constitution, MEChA calls for self-determination by its members to liberate Aztlan. MEChA: "Chicano and Chicana students of Aztlán must take upon themselves the responsibilities to promote Chicanismo within the community, politicizing our Raza with an emphasis on indigenous consciousness to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlán."
Dayton Ohio has just opened their Pandora's box by making this program. They are more them welcomed to the illegals here in Texas...And we will gladly welcome their legal immigrants and US citizens who move out to make room for the hordes of Illegals.
They only have 500+ ESL students....HA! In Texas we have that many in a single school down here. In fact many of our schools here are 75% ESL...mostly from illegal parents who do not assimilate or learn English.
If they have one that's not theirs they shall be arrested and deported right away for ID thief.
Unfortunately, not true. Some people get away with using someone else's SSN for years. With the new laws over the past couple of years, it's harder to find decent work with no SSN, so unless you have someone else's to use, you have to get under the table jobs, which are the crappy jobs with employers who don't follow the rules and pay @!$%#.
Funny how my little statement got everyone thinking I'm in favor of illegal immigration, and I didn't even hint at that. What I said was US citizens are often lazy and don't want to work for anything. They are not willing to get a @!$%#ty job and work their way up to a decent one. They want the great job with lots of benefits and high pay right out of the box (that's how my ex was; 17, just graduated high school, and we had a kid - refused to apply for a fast food job and we lived off his parents in their trailer until I got my ass out of there with the baby and got a real life). You don't get to start out at the top. No one does. I've had crappy jobs. Most people have. But you have to start somewhere, not just sit around bitching that illegals are taking all your jobs. I've seen the jobs they have, and they can keep them. Mine is way better.
I actually come from illegal immigrants. My grandpa was until the Amnesty Act, and my mom was until after my older sister was born (go ahead and comment on where she's from and show how racist you are right now). My grandma was born here, but her parents were illegal. If it weren't for them coming here and busting their asses I wouldn't be here. Most of you wouldn't be here if your ancestors had to go through the same bull@!$%# expensive process modern immigrants go through. All they did was show up and write down their names. Then they were free to work all the @!$%#ty low-paying jobs they wanted and no one gave a damn. Fast forward 100 years and now all of the sudden showing up on a boat and taking a @!$%#ty job makes you a criminal worthy of zero respect and no sympathy. But you're all damn proud of your ancestors for doing it, aren't you? The only difference is we've put laws in place that make what they did illegal. Where the hel do we get that right? If it weren't for the same thing illegals are doing these days, none of us would be here. Perspective.
It's not that I approve of breaking the law. I don't approve of the law itself.
The States are are passing strict ANTI Immigration laws, are not against Immigration. They are against Illegal Immigration. SAME thing with Dayton. They specifically said, legal immigrants.
IF you are here legally, by all means live the American Dream. Start your business, become as rich as you can. I do not know a single person who does not support that.
IF you are here Illegally, Please do not let the door hit you where the good lord split you. LEAVE and come back legally.
Many of the immigration laws that some states are passing are making legal immigrants feel unwelcome. In fact, I believe that in Arizona, some legal immigrants and natural born citizens have been incarerated.
Now, don't take from my statement that I don't favor laws that will eliminate illegal immigration, because I do.
YES! Definitely legal immigrants and U.S. citizens should be made welcomed in the United States. And illegal immigrants should be returned to their COUNTIRES WHERE THEY SHOULD BE MADE WELCOMED!"
" In fact, I believe that in Arizona, some legal immigrants and natural born citizens have been incarerated"
If that were the case, I'm sure it would be plastered all over the news. Do you have any citations to back this up? I met one guy that swore he knew Elvis wasn't dead, but that didn't make it so.
Please tell us how many legal immigrants and citizens have been incarcerated in Arizona because of SB1070. If you can't then why spread a bunch of BS that you can't reference.

Problem is the Federal Government has blocked the schools in Alabama from checking the immigration status of their students / parents. So when a thousand or more non-English speaking children appear next year at their door for free education and health care - guess what?? ! The schools can not check to see if they are there legally. Education will stall because so much energy, time and effort will be focused on these ESL students. And the legal children will be shoved to the back of the line to help the poor immigrant children.
Go back and look at the date of the Mora case because it is important that you understand that that case had nothing to do with SB1070. In fact the report that you posted even says the raid was conducted by Arpiao under the guise of federal law and not state law. Again show us where legals are being arrested under SB1070 or stop the BS!!!
Michael Lockwood: Viridiana Ramireza, a legal citizen, was arrested during a "raid," a year after the Mora debacle. In my above post, I was unclear, I admit; I didn't state that these arrests were a result of SB1080. However, I stand by my original statement, and it is not B.S.
I don't know about that, Joanne... maybe legal "european descent" immigrants, but that last time I passed through GA (a few weeks ago) I was made to feel very unwelcome. Might just be the towns, but they definitely made me feel like an outsider. I visited TN a few months ago, completely different story, but that was probably because of the area (Knoxville) which is right next to the science lab (Oak Ridge.)
Yes, I'm an immigrant. Been a US citizen for 22 years or so. Lived in the US my whole life, minus four months at the beginning.
Hey Matt,
I hear ya - I've lived in GA for the last 10 years and this general area is rude to people who do not come from this area....I'm originally from NY.....
I am the first generation born in this country on my father's side. To me, what all these illegal immigrants do (regardless of ethnicity) is a slap in the face to all the immigrants throughout history that came to this country LEGALLY, who took the proper steps, who wanted to come to this country and assimilate.....the illegals that come here and then demand rights is what really annoys me.
Not only is the Oak Ridge of atomic fame nearby, Knoxville is also home the U of Tenn, and hdqtrs for the Tenn Valley Authority. So yes, although it is in the southern Appalachians of hillbilly fame (Dollywood is just 40m away), it has had a diverse population for many decades, so that the "us-vs-them" mentality is muted.
@GreenTimer: Oh, I'm pretty familiar with the Knoxville area, despite only being there for a few days. I was just making the comparison to GA. I was meeting with people from UTK as well as Oak Ridge, as I work at another lab with a bit more "atomic fame" than ORNL. ;) I just had the feeling they expect to see a bit more "color" in Knoxville, considering the diversity of the lab and uni, and less so when I went through GA.
This problem has to be clearly defined by these cities or they are looking for more than a bit of civil unrest on the parts of the legal residents who do rightfully resent ILLEGAL ALIENS from where ever they may originate! Legal immigrants have every right to be outraged at this affront to their integrity by those with no respect for the rule of law. To get here legally takes a great deal of time, money, and hard work, on their parts, and to have it so blithely thrown away not only by the illegals but our own people is downright disgusting!
Way to go, Dayton! Dayton has lost more jobs in two years than have been created in the previous 15 years! And NOW, we are inviting the undocumented workers of the world to the "Gem City"! Here's a "gem" for you; Put together a task force to create jobs for the existing residents, instead of welcoming those without papers!
No problem with my reading comprehension. The woman said she knows MEXICANS who are going there from Alabama. Not Mexican-Americans, MEXICANS. Why would they leave Alabama if they were legal?
o'really, I would imagine a person would only be referred to as "Mexican-American" if that person was from Mexico and became a US citizen. Could be wrong, of course, but I wouldn't refer to someone as "Whatever-American" unless the person actually became a US citizen. It is certainly possible for one to come to/live in this country 100% legally, but not be a citizen...you do know that, right?
O'really - they might be leaving Alabama because - even if they are legal - they are being targeted each and every day to prove it. Plus, the hatred of Alabama for anyone different has become all to apparent lately. Just like AZ - ignorant people try to prove they are "better" than those who look different than them.
I just love when people try point out other's hatred, and expose their own instead. Nice job smearing all the people of Alabama and Arizona, Goin.
They would not be targeted "each and every day" if they stood up and spoke out against the illegals instead of encouraging more and more to come over the border and demand we change our laws to suit them.
I agree O'really. If legal immigrants are ticked off, then they need to direct their attention to those that created the problem, the ILLEGALS and federal government. The states are only reacting to a problem that has been long ignored and out of control.
poor wittle W.Goin. So sad, all those mean old people from the south. They're so, so, RIGHT. Get out if your illegal!!! And quit crying about it. They caused the problem by coming here illegally anyway.
LEGAL immigrants have been and are always welcome anywhere in the USA. ILLEGAL aliens are NOT welcome and are here against the laws of the USA. Any employer who hires an illegal alien should be subject to arrest/fines, whatever. Unfortunately, there are so many businesses now that are run by illegal aliens, they hire more and more illegals to work for them and so nothing is done. The city better watch things carefully, or they will be over-run with illegals and all the problems it brings.
txmom: there's some jobs waiting for you in Alabama...bunch of crops rotting in the fields...just waiting for Americans JUST like you to break their backs over...Not interested? Didn't think so. Good luck with that Texas.
@txmom: You do know that there aren't a finite number of jobs in the United States. As population swells, so do the number of jobs required to support people, such as in healthcare, hospitality, food services, etc. Legal or not, people still have to eat, among other things, and that creates jobs.
When you look at the current employment numbers... could it really hurt?
And who foots the bill for the rest Matt? The education cost, medical cost ect? While the Western Union people make a pretty good profit, that doesn't lower my taxes. In fact, footing the bill is what raises my taxes. Buying a few snickers bars and a bag of groceries does not even come close to the amount spent by taxpayers to educate and medicate illegals.
AP...so you have no salient point....I would think with an unemployment rate of 9.8% that there are people who are taking assistance in Alabama that can get out and work in the Fields. As Alabama also sports the second lowest graduation rage I would believe they are producing their own field workforce.
Matt...America is hurting in many fields where they need skilled labor, trades and service positions. Unfortunately we have far too many people in this country that have completely disregarded the public trust in graduating from their free and fair K-12 who intend to rely on public assistance. We don't need to ask foreign nationals to take those unskilled jobs we need to rely on the pool of self-imposed undereducated that we currently have in America.
Sadly, those positions that have historically been part-time jobs or good entry positions for students are being used to sustain families in this country. By allowing and encouraging illegal immigrant jobs we have not only cut out positions for our own working poor but we have eliminated good first jobs for our high school and college aged kids who need to learn to earn in order to become responsible members of a community.
@tammy: So your basis is that they pay no taxes, and therefore, it's costing you money. Can we also make the argument for the 47% of American citizens that pay little or no income tax? That's a real number, straight from the IRS. Maybe we should "kick out" those people too? The number of "illegal" immigrants taking advantage of the system is nothing compared to the number of US citizens with their hands out. The relevance is that the money is peanuts, less than $0.01 per dollar of taxes spent on covering these costs. It's like worrying about leaving the toaster on, when your house is on fire.
@txmom: The jobs are still there. It's the uncompromising attitude of teens/young adults that preclude them from good "first jobs." Same goes for the average American worker, thinking they are worth $40k a year for essentially an unskilled position. People still have their lawns mowed. Not many teens I know are willing to do the difficult job of landscaping, but they're always hiring. I know a lot of people that do home remodeling, they need people to paint, pull up old tile, etc. It's hard, low-paying work. Who's willing to do it? Not many teens. I unloaded trucks summers when I was in high school. It was backbreaking work, in a 120 degree warehouse, making $5.50 an hour. These teens want the "easy, clean" jobs, like working in retail. There's only so many stores at the mall, and they only need so many people to work there.
Just seems to me people don't like to get their hands dirty, or find that jobs are "beneath them." There are still plenty of manual labor jobs to be had, they just require a little bit of pavement pounding and sweat.
Matt...I think you might be a bit out of touch with teens today. I know many who want and need part time jobs: lawn work, babysitting, clerking part-time in a store or at the window or behind the griddle at McDonalds. Busing tables or waiting tables are also great first jobs that are taken by under educated heads of households.
In High School I did several jobs. I had my own house cleaning business and I worked at the local news paper. In college I waited tables, worked at the paper in the summers and for a time I cleaned a daycare. There are kids that will work...some even in the fields. But they have to have jobs available to them.
As for field work and other full time employment options...any job is better than living off of welfare. Maybe the problem is that welfare is paying too much. Maybe the problem is that farmers are still paying illegal workers under the table and all avoid paying their fair share.
Matt, your figures do not include payroll taxes, property taxes, social security. Illegals for the greater part, do not contribute to any of these taxes. Your idea of peanuts has all but shut down one California hospital because of the illegal birth rate. On to education, property taxes do pay a large portion of the educational cost in a community. How many illegals are paying property taxes? Rent? Well put 12 in a property and anyone can see even the tax paid to the landlord is disproportionate to the amount spent. Then move on to our prison system...how much is spent to house illegals? How about college? No they do not get Pell grants ect. but they do get reduced in state rates. These rates are subsidized by state governments...and who pays for that? Oh yea legal residents. These are all things that a legal citizen pays for, and its far from peanuts.
@Tammy: So your basis, again, is that because they aren't paying the same taxes you are, they are the problem, and not the services to begin with.
Hospitals problems extend far beyond "illegal immigrants." Many people do not have insurance, yet still go to the hospital, because of law that states a hospital must treat every person that walks into its doors. Kill the law, problem fixed.
College? First off, the current education model is failing -- too many people go to college for nonsense. Look at the number of journalism majors nationwide at any given time, vs. the total number of jobs in journalism, and you'll see why our system is failing. The belief that "anyone can be brought up to college's level" has merely brought colleges down to everyone's level. They need to close community colleges, most state run schools, and open more vocational schools. People do not need to go to college for four years to major in European history or anthropology. They could just as easily go to a library and read, for essentially free. Again, raising the standards, cutting the program would alleviate this problem. But college (and there is indeed a bubble) is just like housing was under Clinton: There is a push to get everyone to go -- I think recently, the number was at 40% of high school graduates, and they want the number to be 60%! That's absolutely insane.
Ditto welfare, etc. Cutting the services would better serve communities than trying to sort out people based on immigration status. There are plenty of people abusing the system that are legal citizens. How do we go after them, too? Or wait, I guess we don't, because they've got their papers in order. The system is completely flawed. Many of the 47% get subsidized (section 8) housing, food stamps, tax breaks, etc. Most pay no property tax, or have it refunded completely or partially, in addition to collecting tax credits like EIC, etc. There are 310 million people in the United States -- but you want to blame the problem on a tiny fraction?
No Matt, I'm saying it's not peanuts. It is a part of the problem. We cannot continue to send Billions to Mexico. Remittances, such as Western Union Moneygrams from the United States represent the second largest source of income for Mexico. In 2009, Mexican workers, mostly illegal aliens, sent home $21.2 billion in such transfers.
Yes, Matt there are pleanty of people abusing the system, so where do we start? While we are cutting off EIC can we cut loopholes, oil subsidies and the like? Can we stop the corporate welfare programs as well? We have an older generation that sees social security not for what it is, but as something they are due. Most will pay in far less than they take out. It was never supposed to be a way of life, but insurance against living in poverty in old age. Yet, these are the same people that will scream nanny state ect. So Matt, where do we start?
They can have them, ALL of them. What will happen is they will lower the income for ALL people in Ohio. They will also use your hospital at tax payer expense since they won't be required to have insurance under Obamacare. That ONLY applies to U.S. citizens, you CANNOT force foreigners to buy anything like Mr. Obama is making us do with healthcare. Eventually Ohio will be in worse shape than they are now as the illegals become a drain on their entire system, including healthcare and schools.
....not sure how you melded a story about helping legal immigrants with your obvious dislike of ObamaCare...by the way who does pay for YOUR insurance? Not you unless you are a small business paying your premiums, otherwise you are a subsidized citizen from the guvment or your employer...darn socialists
Rick...apparently you know nothing about business. When an employer hires someone and pays part or all of their insurance, it's called part of the TOC...Total Cost of Employment and is considered part of your salary. Has nothing to do with socialism.
Yeah, don't you just hate it when those Hispanic's move into a run down neighborhood, clean up the yards, open restaurants and grocery stores?
Those dying on the cornstalk midwestern towns could learn a thing or two here. Many of them come from generations of farmers, a little land and an open mind could be the salvation of many of those towns.
Ray Setzer Yeah, don't you just hate it when those Hispanic's move into a run down neighborhood, clean up the yards, open restaurants and grocery stores? Those Illegal Aliens Hispanic's and other Illegals Aliens ****well do the opposite.
Ray I'm from Dayton and go back there once in awhile to visit. You are right about it being run down. I'm told not to go downtown, it is totally owned by gangs and street kids. some of the neighborhoods are so run down you can buy a 1,200 ft house with basement for under $10k. but you gotta keep the crackheads and meth addicts out. The people who know how to do things left town. The folks left are those trapped into staying due to lack of ability to move or are welfare dependent and may not qualify if they move south or are criminals. Detroit's not an option.
I dislike the following statement made in the article - "You see people out on the street and you know they're illegal," he said."
Really? you can tell just from looking at someone that they are an illegal or not? that's amazing! that guy should be working in Border Patrol!
You can't tell! The Dayton plan does not say anything about specifically welcoming "Illegals."The proposed plan is to welcome Immigrants that are here legally.
And whats up with all this distaste fro foreigners and immigrants? Do I have to remind you that this country was founded by immigrants and foreigners and that the only true Americans that were here were the Native Americans!
The distaste stems from people being tired of our government doing absolutely nothing to fix the illegal immigration problem. I'm all about loving thy neighbor...but there is an issue of practicality to consider. Does America, the "great land of opportunity" (hah) have unlimited resources? Does it make sense for an entire nation of people to migrate to another nation? When do we say, "sorry, we can't handle anymore." While we are at it, we can't discriminate and only allow people from Mexico to immigrate illegally...guess we'll have to open up the border to India, China, and any other nation for that matter as a "free for all." You think Mexico will ever solve it's problems as long as we welcome them here, with open arms illegally? Think about these things. And then think how it feels to be a person living in Dayton, down and out on your luck, hearing that the city is implementing new programs to help people NOT born in the U.S. Kinda feels like your country has turned it's back on you, huh?
I live in Dayton. And i have been down and out on luck, including homelessness 7 years ago. now I am a collage graduate, and had a great job and was laid of from said job, and instead of sitting around collecting unemployment for two years I took a job that wasn't in my field so I could provide for my family until I found a job in my field which I am in now.
Im just going to throw it here like this, I am sick and tired of all the racism in this country. Its disgusting! We as a country are better than that. My point was the man in the article stated that he could tell if someone was an illegal just by looking at them. Incorrect. I am half Native American and half Argentinian, I am not white. I was born in this country. If you saw me walking down the street would you just assume I was an Illegal. White people are no longer the majority in this country they are the minority, and I think that scares some of them.
and if you don't like how the government is run, then pay more attention to who you vote for. Everyone keeps blaming the government when the blame should be on ourselves because we voted them in office, I don't care what party your in, its a true statement regardless of your party. And if you don't like who is running then run yourself. The politicians are going to continue to act and behave they way do until we as a people stand up and tell them we are sick of it by not voting for them. the change starts with the people.
If white people are the minority, then what is the problem? They'll be gone in no time anyway. Then who are you going to point the finger at and call racist? Would you consider yourself racist? Does your "loving" attitude stem to people of lighter skin tones too? Because your comment hinted to the contrary.
I am of Irish/Scottish descent (I think.) I was born extremely poor to teenage parents, and also had to fight my way to a decent life. Point is, I don't think skin color really matters at all. And this issue (to most of us) has nothing to do with race. If people from Canada were migrating (illegally) at massive numbers, people would still not be cool with it. I understand this is the problem with current methods of enforcement - racial profiling. But for many of us, race is completely insignificant.
Best of luck to you and your family. You sound like a good person, so I hope you have a happy, prosperous life.
the problem for native americans was their piss poor immigration system, not to mention no written language, nothing more lethal than a bow and arrow and inventing the wheel would have helped.
joshua: It's very easy to spot an illegal Mexican. The clothing is different for one thing. Shoes are different for another. There are many other things that we can spot.
It is just a way to interject more emotion and less logic into the problem Mike.... that way it never gets solved. 40% of the child birth costs paid by medicaid in Colorado was to illegal immigrant mothers. Nationally there is over $40 million a DAY paid for child birth costs, but no statistics on how much to illegals.
Really Mike? What freaking cave do you live in? I am an immigrant, a legal one and for Marco Rubio's sake a true exile not one who is ashamed because his family came here to keep a fortune not as exiles and to say no state is against legal immigrants I say being braced searched and threatened on a daily basis sure feels like they are.
Dont be angry at those doing their jobs. Be angry at the illegals that are making everyone's life more difficult...except the rich who hire them under the table as nannies, house cleaners and gardeners.
A local US military base is remodeling their family housing units, in Jacksonville, NC...
The over-all bid was won by a Australian Company. They are using local sub-contractors to preform the actual work. Which is a good thing, but then the other shoe drops...
The sub contractors were given the wage scales which are about 50% of the normal rates. The Sub-Contractors stated they could not obtain the needed skilled laborers at those rates. The Aussie Company stated either do the job at those rates or they would import foreign works to preform the work...
A Sub-Contractor I know, hired the applicants at those rates; the unskilled, drug addicted, and people looking for un-employment benefits were the only people that showed up. After one year he is filling for bankruptcy, his unemployment insurance has triplied and he could not afford the broken tools and missed dead-lines...
Keep catering to those imported workers, it will only result in sub-standard work and increasing cost...
It is not the job of city government to "welcome" one group or another. I feel that Dayton is trying to gain population by whoring themselves out so blatantly. Funny thing, these efforts tend to backfire. Case in point: Detroit tried to bump its census numbers by welcoming refugees from New Orleans. It worked for a little while, but they couldn't take the winters here. When they left, they took alot of people with them, and the city ended up smaller than before.
I like how the article also said they want to raise awareness of social service programs and housing programs to help them. This is absolute BS. I live in this area and it is a TWO year waiting list to get help with housing- and the waiting list is actually CLOSED. Anyway, stating this is stating that they want these people to come to Dayton to then be put on welfare? You couldn't PAY me to live in Dayton right now. There are constant shootings and killings on the news EVERY night. I remember a month or so ago that someone got his head blown off for his BICYCLE.
There have always been ups and downs, good times and bad ones. The state of the economy needs less media attention as this is a story old as time. Neighbor looses his job and its a recession YOU loose YOUR job and its a depression. Whatever,
"If Dayton wants to help build its economy by letting people know that illegal immigrants are welcome, that's their prerogative," said Steve Salvi, founder of Ohio Jobs & Justice PAC, an advocacy group that focuses on illegal immigration.
Hey, dimwit ... they said they are leaving immigration enforcement to the Feds (where it belongs). They are encouraging LEGAL immigrants to help build OHIO.
"Teabagger" - derogatory for a member of an American grassroots group known as the Tea Party. Used indiscriminately by the party of tolerance and diversity.
It is a party of stupidity when they espouse the views of idealogue politicians who will truly use that to hurt the simple-minded people who vote them into office.
I am truly amazed by some low-to-middle income people who are so uneducated or so racist that they cut their own throats to vote politicians in office that will hand them their heads. At least the financial and big corporate lobbyists who push them have a vested intrest in what they are doing.
Even now these politicians refuse to do anything that will help create or keep hundreds of thousands of critical jobs; critical to our nation, to our citizens and critical to the families who are supported by these workers. (I'm talking about teachers, police and fire fighters, for example).
Most of you, based of your stupid comments, didn't even read the article. There is nothing in this article that says Dayton is saying for illegal immigrants to come here. Not once did they say this. Read the damn article before you give your "Sarah Palin Glen Beck" opinion
Those people type in Faux News and landed here.No wonder they are confused, if its not about Guns or Palin they're Dumbfounded...Oh yeah by the way RIGHT ON DAYTON!!This Country is about Immigrants unless ur an Native American DUH!!!
And cue the "foreigners are stealing our jobs!!!!111111ZOMGZOMBIES!!!" cries in 3... 2... 1...
yeah, what's with all that common sense out of Ohio, anyway???
Good going DAYTON!
EliMae,
While I agree with your comment (and found it somewhat true/funny) do you think Pedro will want to live like this forever? If Pedro were given the opportunity to sit on his a-- and collect a welfare check, reckon he'd take it? Furthermore, isn't it inherently racist to think that Hispanics should be doing the jobs we are too lazy and "good" to do?
Your point does highlight the desperate need for welfare reform.
EliMae- well, we sure wouldn't want the employers to have to comply with labor laws, would we?
Spin, spin, spin.
If you want to create 5 million new jobs in the USA?
Give all the Illegal immigrants citizenship!
HA
I could care less remove the illegals.
THAT IS THE I-L-L-E-G-A-L-S NOT THE LEGALS YOU FRIKIN DUMB-DUMBS
THATS WHAT ALL THEW STINK IS ABOUT. STUPID OHIO
i wish the city would lose federal money ,
I can just see the illegals starting to flock to Dayton. Sure you're attracting legals. Problem is that with the legals come a crap load of illegals.
EliMae:
Just don't be surprised or mad when your food like tomatoes start costing you $12.00 each.
Thanks bill s. Nice to know there is someone else that gets it.
Could a 60 year old woman pick tomatoes?
"The United States is simply hooked on cheap, illegal workers and deferring the costs of providing public services to these quasi-Americans.
http://www.illegalaliens.us/
I don't think illegal immigrants can receive welfare of anykind or unemployment, they need a social security card number.
Excellent point, bill s.
Bill s 374237. You are spot on man. Keep writing. Please.
Where is my bumper sticker:

God bless Dayton.
May they see the kind of unbridled economic growth that was once endemic all over this great land.
Nikki-1975634
One lie after another. But that's what you get when you use racists and Nazis as your sole source of information.
What a misleading story..
But Detroit, he really isn't dead, is he?
deader than disco
Mary
Please tell us how many legal immigrants and citizens have been incarcerated in Arizona because of SB1070. If you can't then why spread a bunch of BS that you can't reference.
" In fact, I believe that in Arizona, some legal immigrants and natural born citizens have been incarerated"
It is when they get caught selling drugs or doing something else against the law that they get incarcerated. As they should be.
Detroit -
Do a web search for Julian Mora. Maricopa County paid $200,000 for the Sheriff's screw up.
And yes, as far as I'm concerned one is one too many.
Brian: Thank you for providing that information. I had to leave and didn't read the posts until now.

What a misleading story..
Mary and Brian
Those "immigrants" Ohio wants to welcome from AL and GA - have at it!
We don't mind immigrants here in GA - LEGAL immigrants anyway....
Matt,
Not only is the Oak Ridge of atomic fame nearby, Knoxville is also home the U of Tenn, and hdqtrs for the Tenn Valley Authority.
LOL..in Georgia you can be a born American, but once you open your mouth and out comes that northen states talk your not very welcome there.
Ever see that movie (My cousin Vinny) almost true, that's why they made it.
Perhaps they can be 'paper trained'
Perhaps there is a reading comprehension problem in Dayton. This plan by the city is for legal immigrants.
Good to see SOMEBODY knows the difference between legal and illegal. I was starting to wonder.
They just won't be able to tell so in the end it won't matter.
Good luck with that Dayton...are you expecting a big check from the Federal Government to help support low wage earners and well the associated costs?
txmom: there's some jobs waiting for you in Alabama...bunch of crops rotting in the fields...just waiting for Americans JUST like you to break their backs over...Not interested?
Try a little American ingenuity. Crops rotting in the field?
Why don't they try something like this until they can find people to fill the jobs:
Prison farm works to feed hungry Treasure Valley families
For the second year, inmates are cultivating crops destined for Idaho Foodbank shelves.

Maybe the problem is that farmers are still paying illegal workers under the table and all avoid paying their fair share.

like you idea of prisoners working in the fields except for 2 things.
1) the government is so crooked they might arrest people just for the free work, the government gets.
2) unions in most states won't allow this.
"...those who come here illicitly will continue to be subject to U.S. laws."
And just how are you going to determine if they ARE here "illicitly"?
Yeah, don't you just hate it when those Hispanic's move into a run down neighborhood, clean up the yards, open restaurants and grocery stores?
Those dying on the cornstalk midwestern towns could learn a thing or two here. Many of them come from generations of farmers, a little land and an open mind could be the salvation of many of those towns.
Yeah, don't you just hate it when those Hispanic's move into a run down neighborhood, clean up the yards, open restaurants and grocery stores?
More Smoke and Mirrors, ROFLMAO
I dislike the following statement made in the article - "You see people out on the street and you know they're illegal," he said."
Really? you can tell just from looking at someone that they are an illegal or not? that's amazing! that guy should be working in Border Patrol!
You can't tell! The Dayton plan does not say anything about specifically welcoming "Illegals."The proposed plan is to welcome Immigrants that are here legally.
And whats up with all this distaste fro foreigners and immigrants? Do I have to remind you that this country was founded by immigrants and foreigners and that the only true Americans that were here were the Native Americans!
People need to just relax and Love each other.
exactly what is a true American? BTW Joshua, those native Americans migrated here, the stork didn't fly over and just drop them here.
P.S. - I'm a registered Democrat.
END RACISM!
and if you don't like how the government is run, then pay more attention to who you vote for.
Joshua...you've haven't seen racism yet.
Go to youtube, search for 'Azltan Nation' and watch the video.
This my friend is the real problem that is coming down the road.
the problem for native americans was their piss poor immigration system, not to mention no written language, nothing more lethal than a bow and arrow and inventing the wheel would have helped.
joshua: It's very easy to spot an illegal Mexican. The clothing is different for one thing. Shoes are different for another. There are many other things that we can spot.
I don't know about illegals from other countries.
This article is BS, no state is against LEGAL immigration.
Ray-402
Lived near Dayton. Been to it many times. Dayton "officials" will say/do anything to keep that dying town from shriveling up like a dried fig.
Typical Teabagger comment. :~/

http://www.mlbuie.com/obama_gettin_it_done.jpg
Unfortunately, letting the feds handle the problem is what a created the problem.
"Teabagger" - derogatory for a member of an American grassroots group known as the Tea Party. Used indiscriminately by the party of tolerance and diversity.
Party of "diversity"? of DIVERSITY!?
So silly.
If you are a legal immigrant, Welcome
If you are illegal, get the hell out.
Greatest Country in the world. Were going 3d world everyday.
please send all the illegals to dayton.
...but keep the legal immigrants in your city or state.
You can have all the illegals and do us a favor keep them all.
Washington apple growers are paying $150.00 per day to apple pickers and can't find enough pickers to do the work.
