I CARE. If it had been one of our soldiers that behaved like they did, that soldier would be facing a firing squad. You should be, as if Europe has to rely more on Saudi Arabia, Iraq Oil, that means less for the US. And do not give me that lame (non factual) US gets most of it's Oil from Mexico and Canada. The Libyan rebels were going about the removal of Kaddafi before NATO, the Arab League, or the United States had a hand in anything.

Granted the rebels would have had a much more difficult time of removing Kaddafi.

However in no way should any other country “decide” what type of government the Libyans pick for themselves, period.

Thats why religion and government dont mix. The religious groups always define "morality" on their own terms. Not good if you are part of the minority.

I'm concerned when mention of basing laws on sharia is mentioned; especially when many of the barbaric aspects of sharia (such as female circumsisions and honor killings such as killing one's daughter for "becomming too westernized") are taken into account. Though, and this said, there is a fair big difference between Egypt and Pakistan for instance. And in the end, like any other people, they have to be allowed to evolve, and if they do, follow their own path along the way. For ourselves, the "journey" if you will in how we got to where we are is as important as where we got. The fact that we passed through the civil war and the race wars, means that in facing these issues today we have more then just the "lessons learned". Knowing the history and having passed through it, we gained the understanding, that being told by another and outside personal experience itself, we would never have gained along the way.

Just, if things do turn sour, we do need to be prepared to prodtect ourselves. There's no reason to create issue, or start anything; but if we start seeing a terrorist threat, respond and defend from it. I said it then, and still stand by it. The US isn't a wimp of a nation, and we don't *need* the neighborhood bully or dictator to keep us safe from the terrorists. We can afford to do what is right, because if it does in the end turn out badly (if things went the way they did with Iran), we could stand on our own. I'm hopeful that things won't go that way, but in the end, whatever uncertainties might remain wrt whatever is next, I do have certain confidence in our own nation's streangth and ability to survive.

I do hope however (though it isn't a certainty), that passing through whatever might come next, the people over there will evolve (as we had done passing through the middle ages), and some of the detestable acts such a female circumcision/mutilation will become a thing of the past. But a memory, and a historic accounting of rather brutal times gone by (as we would now deem burning people alive or putting them on the rack).

What concerns me more is when us Western Americans try to chastise a new form of Libyan government for wanting Islamic law as a base, when a very large percentage of our nation (most likely including some people calling out the new Libyan movement) would easily ask for Christian morality and values imposed as law.

When a Mormon is seriously considered as the President of our country it really makes you wonder at the gullibility of the American people.

The problem when Muslims write an Islamic constitution is that there is not freedom of religion, no freedom of speech, and they use their religion to violate human rights. Libya as 1% of Christian population, most of them will be killed, sent to jail or deported from their own country, all in the name of Ala. Will see if Barack Hussein Obama will protect those lives , like he did for the rebels.

I think it is a little early to be jumping to conclusions about a translated statement. Did he say he planned to institute Sharia law, or was it more like a statement saying that the new Libya would uphold Islamic principles?

I'm not so sure this is all that different than an American politician talking about upholding Christian principles.

It is likely that the individual was trying to say something that the vast majority of the citizens could support. But the devil is always in the details. It is not like there is some standardized universal version of "Islamic Law". Different Islamic countries, apply it differently. I think it would be pretty safe to predict that he wouldn't say that they intend to abandon Islam and build a government based on Christian principles! I'm not reading too much into this statement, and it's not like this guy was chosen by an overwhelming majority of Libyans. Sounds more to me like someone trying to become a politician.

One has to remember that after 42 years of Ghadafi rule, most people alive would have to be a little apprehensive about what changes will be coming. I think it was a statement designed to instill some confidence and was likely interpreted in many different ways by the audience. It seems likely that the coming days will have a lot of debate. It seems unlikely that the public would support a very strict radical Islamic State. Remember, Ghadafi claimed to be a strong supporter of Islamic Law too. There's a lot of room for interpretation.

As to the death of Ghadafi, I suppose it only makes sense for us to suggest that there may have been some inappropriate actions, but then what really is the civilized way to murder someone? I am sure that some Libyans would have preferred he be taken alive so that they could deliver some even more brutal and punitive punishment. Ghadafi pretty much sealed his own fate and the exact way it was brought about really has very minor meaning. It was a revolution. These rarely end cleanly. Ghadafi is gone and there is no way he can re-emerge. That was the goal and in the big picture, the details of how it was achieved really isn't all that significant.

The coming days will tell the tale and it will be a long process to fill the leadership gap. Some suggest that Egypt is a good example of how it can turn out badly, but I don't think the Egypt situation has "turned out" yet. Often in revolutions like these, there may be agreement on ousting a leader, but there is rarely agreement about what should take his place. Once that leadership gap exists, there will be those who seek to take advantage of the situation to gain power. Just because the previous leader is gone, doesn't really signal the true end of the revolution. It will take a long time in Egypt and likely it won't be a smooth transition in Libya either. It's a bit early to jump to conclusions in either case.

Also realize that if this new government becomes as corrupt as Ghaddafi's was there will be another revolt. It does not matter what really happens as it will be the will of the majority of Libyans. What many folks seem to forget is the concept of extremism. The far religious right in this country is filled with loony tunes who would force their belief system on others if they had the chance. Ditto the far right Muslim extremists. Problem here is that there are many Muslim extremists in control of countries. Look to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Indonesia. Sharia Law is the law of Allah and takes precedence and must be followed by its practitioners. Now, in Tunisia the dictator was a secularist, ditto Libya and to a certain extent Egypt. Note that those abusive dictators spent a great deal of energy suppressing the more stringent adherents of Sharia.

Reading some of the interviews with the Tunisian voters the theme was that they hoped the most powerful political party, the Islamist party, if elected, would not enforce the more radical aspects of Sharia. So, there is a danger and a concern with the application of Sharia Law since it is not something that offers an alternative to Islam.

Mike, he couldn't have been shot in the head after he was down. Look at the video. The blood is clearly running down his body. He was standing when he was shot. He was also shot in the abdomen and chest. There is little blood from those wounds, which would suggest that he was already dead when he was shot. The only "autopsy" was a quick look at the head. No autopsy incisions are on the body. He was washed before being put on display--but when he was on the ground with the pack of dogs stomping him, the blood trails ran from his head down his body. Death is not necessarily instantaneous when shot in the head. Depends what he was shot with and how the bullet reacted. He was executed in the streets and died in the streets. The ambulance was just a way to move his body to Mistrata.

pjam...I am not an idiot. I have seen gun shot wounds. I saw the bullet hole and it was done at point blank range. Hot from a distance as some have purported. It could have happened in the ambulance, but I doubt that it did. The 9mm bullets to his abdomen and chest were just as fatal. It was an execution. Simple. Well, in my opinion, the content of one's faith, or they're faith in general doesn't mean anything to me. Our country was founded on a principle to keep religion out of government. If any candidate was serious, they would say that it doesn't matter whether candidate believes in god, is a Jew, Muslim. Christian, or a sect of each faith receptively, religion should not guide a candidate.

As a Christian, I have few problems with Koranic law, but then, I wasn't asked. Sharia law, however, is a whole new ball game. Sharia law, which is a man made law, developed from Koranic principals, is often compatible with Koranic law, but often it is incompatible with Koranic law and at other times directly contradicts Koranic law. I'm not so sure that's true. All of Northern Africa was a battleground during WWII, and the Italians invaded Libya in 1911 and ruled it as a colony until 1940. Mussolini also invaded Ethiopia in the 1930's. How much bombing was involved, I don't know. I'm not an expert on WWII, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a certain amount of bombing then.

Dan..This isn't about his rights. It is about his captor's honor in my opinion. He got what he deserved, certainly. But did his captors act with honor and integrity. I sure don't support giving him an honorable burial. Unfortunately, he was captured alive. He should have been taken before the NTC and they should have decided his fate--with no made up stories or coverup. Just a simple: He was shot by firing squad upon the order of the NTC. Not true... the U.S. was getting about 25 million barrels of oil from Libya per year, though considering we use about 20 million a day it's a small percentage. However, U.S. companies have been working to update Libya's oil production for the last several years. Before Reagan's embargo began in 1984, the U.S. got plenty of oil from Libya.

France on the other hand gets quite a bit of its oil from Libya which is why they were front and center in the crisis. I guarantee you that more of our oil will come from Libya in the coming years.

It doesn't matter who gets da Libyan oil if it's done through Western oil companies. They and da BANKSTERS KNOW no boundaries. LOL!

Has anyone here ever wondered, through all the strife in Libya over the past several months, how a Central Bank was hastily put in place. At that time there was virtually no one running the country. Gadhafi was too busy lobbing ordnance at his own people, and wouldn't have created a new bank in the first place. His country's monetary system was being taken over by outside entities.

The oil issue is a minor one, the issue is who controls the money. Libya had an independent, and successful banking system, one of four in the world I think, now there are only three. Hillary masterminded the affair in Libya no doubt because the European Central Bank wanted to gain control of yet another sovereign banking system.

I hate to use the word conspiracy, but one needs to dig deep to find out how events like this start, who spearheads the effort, and who ultimately benefits.
