The shark killed two other divers, so it's understandable if the Australians need to go out and hunt it down. Good luck to them and hope they find the right one quickly.
when the sharks come on land and start eating people then we should go after them, but if you go in the water you accept the risks, leave the shark alone.
when you engage in high risk behavior YOU take responsibility for what happens
I drag race, I accept the risk, if I wreck, I don't expect the track to close or someone else to take the blame, when you go fast @!$%# happens, when you dive or surf @!$%# happens. Americans today are a bunch of wimps as far as personal responsibility goes, whine whine whine, it aint my fault!
Still, I don't care how many people the shark has killed. I live in a small beach town famous for shark attacks (if one pays attention to that sort of thing). Everyone here knows to watch for the danged sharks, for heaven's sake.
Somewhere on this thread we had some people saying the ocean was not for swimming in so stay out. Sorry. I can't agree with them. They probably have really boring lives, you know?
The air is not for flying in, the grass is not for going barefoot in, the mountain is not for skiing on............
This is un-freaking-believable. Sharks have been roaming the oceans since before the dinosaurs. Long before humans 'evolved'. Because a fish has the temerity to be capable of killing a human, it needs to die? And what about the other sharks that might be caught on those baited hooks? This is asanine.
Stupid people. They go out into theocean where sharks have to live and fed, man goes into their habtat and put themselves at risk, and ow the shark is the one being hunted for 'stupid man" that can't learn to stay on land or boat.
Kudos to the shark, and these people are just stupid. What are they going to do here, hunt and kill sharks until they satisfy their need of revenge for man being stupid.
Soooo let me see. 2,500 white sharks vs Billions of people with billions of toasters. I would say that the numbers would go in the toasters favor. This bit of data doesn't however suggest that i should be more afraid of my toaster than swimming with sharks, does it?
I still say leave the sharks alone; there's an inherent risk in diving or anything to do with venturing into the wilds, be it the oceans or woodlands. The updated article even stated that sharks pass the coast and are known to this time of year.
Use your brains and thinking skills to avoid being in the water, in their path this time of year. If people start killing all that is potentially dangerous to them, then human animals should start with themselves; more humans die at the hands of humans than anything.
The article also stated that it was a cloudy day, the type of day for such an attack... add that in with the time of year, and those that venture into the sharks' domain are literally asking for something, thrill seekers maybe, bragging rights.
Don't let the money industry of tourism cloud judgement and don't go wonton killing sharks, looking or hoping for the right one. For the love of god, this is like bringing the movie Jaws to life except they'll probably kill a dozen and never find the one(s) responsible.
It's like mountain climbing; have at it if that's your thing, but don't risk the lives of rescuers in snow storms, etc... because you decidedly took your life into your own hands. And, don't blame the mountains or weather for your adrenaline rush demise......
Actually - Australia has the most predators, if the sharks don't get you the Sydney spider might, and then there are the coconuts that aim to kill, and last of all don't leave your brand new BMW - else they will think you're a "tall poppy" and you will be subject to a key indent across your car - give me a break - Australia is known for it's predator sharks - don't go there. Period - go to New Zealand or Malibu - guys
Actually, more humans die at the (hands?) of mosquitoes than anything. And they're not endangered. But I'm doing my fair share to put them on the list.
Human, the Great Whites have been very active this fall; A Great White just recently threw a surfer in the air and bit his surf board in half in Oregon. They are too cool ! (the surfer was never harmed)
This domain was populated by sharks and other marine creatures long before ''tourists'' arrived on the scene. These Aussies have been watching ''JAWS'' a bit too much. This whole scenario is like the final scene in the original ''Frankenstein'' movie where the villagers armed with flaming torches storm the countryside looking for the monster. One (1) fatal shark attack on average in Australia ; wonder how many Aussies are killed by venomous snakes or struck by lightning each year?
A/noon erwache....so far in WA there have been 4 deaths in 18 months, and I do not support nor does the vast majourity of Australians hunting/killing the shark. Besides sharks aren't that dumb and it could be kilometres away by now. Very rare for people to die by snake now providing you get the anti venom quick enough. But the odd person does. 215 shark attacks here have been fatal and 516 injured our records start 218 years ago. So over all not that many. And we just accept the fact, that is our country. Don't worry they will go thru the motions for looking for the shark and will give up shortly. They are looking for a needle in a haystack and they know it. Just have to appease the people wanting blood. Nearly all families of Australians taken say the same thing.."leave the shark alone"...and they should know, the pain of loss, must be dreadful but they are still concerned for the welfare of the shark.
erwache, I agree. But Great Whites are not unique to Australia. They are throughout the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. For these Australian athorities to think that they can hunt down this one specific Great White that killed this diver is insane. (are they going to interrogate all the Great Whites they come across to find the one that killed the diver ?)
If humans were meant to be in the ocean, we'd have been born with gills. If you want to SAFELY swim, jump in the pool. If you want to swim in the ocean, it's at your own risk. Sharks don't set out to kill humans. They normally just give us an "exploratory nip" to see if we're just the dumbest looking seal they've ever seen. Unfortunately, our bodies do not react too kindly to these little nips!
What next? Some dumbass is going to take a little hike in the middle of the jungle, get attacked by a lion or tiger, then the media is going to encourage a massive hunt for that lion/tiger. Get real! Wake up, people! If you invade another species' domain, that other species has full rights to take you down!
I have an indoor pool on my exotic animal farm in Ohio. I'm shopping for a Great White but it must come with some swimmers. Any takers ? Trades considered
trade ya mine for one of the tigers that you recently picked up, and my shark comes with its own feeding system, it just hangs around the courthouse and when some unsuspecting client / victim comes by....wham ...its all over.....
Total and absolute garbage. You go into their home and trespass yet its all about tourism so we try to kill them. How about I come into your home kill you and cite your to ugly to be around it may damage tourism.
I love swimming in the Ocean and scuba diving. Ever since I was a kid I knew I was taking a risk in doing so due to the aquatic animals in the Ocean. No matter were you live a shark can dart at you without knowing it is coming and eat you alive.
Everybody knows this and is part of the risk and adventure of swimming in the Ocean
The story said that one man, in 2000, was killed wading in knee-deep water. Should we just stay out of the water entirely, including right off of the beach because you think sharks should have free reign in the entire ocean, including just around the shoreline of resort hotels?
How can the Aussies reconcile hunting great whites when the great white is protected by Australian law? What hypocrites. I am obviously very sorry for the loss of human life, but hunting and killing sharks definitely smacks of revenge and small-mindedness. If I were ever to be killed by a shark, I absolutely would not want any such action to be taken. Like others have said, it's a gamble as to whether they would even get the right shark anyway. And if they did? So what? There are other great whites out there to take its place, at least for the time being... one of the most amazing apex predators in history, and mankind is threatening its existence, like we do with so many other species. Just remarkably short-sighted and self-centered, two unfortunate hallmarks of our species.
No, Lawrence, but it left fin prints all over the surrounding water molecules. Those clever Australians have gathered those particular molecules together to retrieve the fin prints.
Lawrence Grossman: "How will they spot the right shark? did someone get its license plate number?" LOL!! I've been diving for 11 years, I have my Advanced diver certification, and have done about 5 night dives. I'm well-trained, cautious, and I know the risks. Because I love this sport, I'm willing to take the risks. To hunt down and kill a shark or dozens of sharks is, in my humble opinon, wrong...when we go into the ocean to swim or dive, we're entering THEIR world, and we have to respect that. The horrible things we do as humans that devestate the ocean environment are bad enough. Going out and slaughtering dozens of Great Whites seems criminal...IS criminal, if there is a law in Australia to protect them. I like the Aussies alot...it's not just them that do these things. What about the Asians that slaughter hundreds of harmless dolphins?? Listen: if I'm diving, and another diver swims by me and accidentally knocks the mouthpiece out of my mouth with his fin, and I panic and drown, should HE be killed??
That's what sharks do, Paul. Not just this shark...all sharks.
How about, we take some responsibility for OUR actions and chill out about the actions of sharks, which are more than likely controlled not by free will as we understand it but rather nature, as it was intended.
I doubt that I will ever be attacked by a shark. There hasn't been one spotted in Beaver Lake so far. If I ever see one, my bass boat and I will give it a wide berth, the bass can wait another day.
Um, we are humans, they are sharks, we live on land, they live in the ocean. We are guests in their environment. We don't need to be killing everything that kills a human!
Again, we are willing to kill an endangered species for the sake of human profit (ie. tourism)
We as part of the human race, should be ashamed. First of all, the diver was in the sharks habitat, he knew the risks. What have we come to!!!! First the killing of all the beautiful animals in Ohio. I understand that the law enforcement had no choice in taking the lives of these animals. I don't understand why a society allows an individual to own one of these dangerous animals, not to mentioned this troubled individual was allowed to own over 50 such animals. Now we are hunting down a Great White shark because he killed a diver in his habitat. Okay if the shark had traveled to a local shopping mall and killed this man, then I say yes, hunt his ass down.
You're an idiot!!!! If we enter their habitat (NOT THEIR WORLD), you accept the risks! "Apologists should really go first and lead by example", really and explain yourself with that stupid comment!!!
6 of the worlds most venemous snakes. The funnel web spider, world's most venemous and aggressive spider. The worlds largest and most aggressive saltwater crocodiles. The blue ringed octopus whose venom will kill you in 15 to 30 seconds. The cone shell snail whose venom will kill you in 10 to 20 seconds. The "sea wasp" jellyfish who's sting can kill in 30 seconds.
Face it, if your are going to the African Savana, there are going to be Lions. If you dive off the Great Barrier Reef, there's going to be sharks. If a shark attacks you, so be it. Divers go there to experience a pristine and wild reef and sharks are a part of that environment. Killing sharks over a diver's fatality is like blowing up the Grand Canyon because a rock climber fell off a cliff.
Exactly...preposterous doesn't even begin to describe this. That's a plan?? Hunt and kill great whites?? They should be arrested for baiting the damn hooks to lure the shark.
I think the sharks should stand up for their rights and occupy all beaches to point out the injustice. Of course, if they did that, the Rev Al Sharkton would want to get involved for the publicity.
Why are they showing video of a pair of whales in a story about sharks?
When a shark bites your leg you really let out a wail??
Now that is what I'm talking about. @!$%#ing Aussies always have our back. Let's blow the @!$%# out of that shark. Eat an American, kill a Shark!
Why? divers know the risk. Sharks are doing what they do, where they live.
are the Australians really that stupid ? how will they know ? oh , maybe the shark has a distinctive tattoo.
I knew there was something wrong looking about the big fish
Damit America-it's not always about us!
The shark killed two other divers, so it's understandable if the Australians need to go out and hunt it down. Good luck to them and hope they find the right one quickly.

I honestly can't believe they are trying to hunt this shark. What a stupid waste of resources. (I'm American.)
Leave the shark alone; he was only doing what sharks do.
If they were doing this for revenge, I could at least understand that. It is a natural human reaction.
But they are doing it for moneys sake. I'm rooting for the shark now.
Make that two of us, Sqrly.
Ozzi you have proof this shark killed two other people?
Freefaller, you're right. Where's the proof?
Still, I don't care how many people the shark has killed. I live in a small beach town famous for shark attacks (if one pays attention to that sort of thing). Everyone here knows to watch for the danged sharks, for heaven's sake.

That's why Gaddafi was shot in the head. He was a danger to society.
Humans are fair about who and what they kill.
Are you stupid or just being sarcastic?
Stay out of the shark water.
Human, the Great Whites have been very active this fall; A Great White just recently threw a surfer in the air and bit his surf board in half in Oregon. They are too cool ! (the surfer was never harmed)
Sounds like the Great Whites are in the mood for a buffet lunchon; If its biological and in the Ocean, its all you can eat

Well I don't know about the shark having the "full right" to "take down" a human being, but I completely agree with the rest of your post.
MG from VA,,,I agree with your post.
rb2ws - you DO have that right!! As soon as a great white shark invades your house, you have the right to shoot him.
I completely agree with MG from VA.

Thanks for the laugh!! 8-)
No, Lawrence, but it left fin prints all over the surrounding water molecules. Those clever Australians have gathered those particular molecules together to retrieve the fin prints.
I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain just so I could "swim" back to the bottom of it. Have fun, swimmers. I'd rather be flying.

Sounds kind of stupid if you ask me.
How about, keep it from killing again? And yeah, you sound kind of stupid.

The shark is probably hiding in a cave in Tora Bora with assistance from Pakistan.
Best comment of the day!!

This is one of the dumbest stories I have ever seen.... let's go kill a shark FOR BEING A SHARK!
and maybe a few others looking for the right one. i cant agree with you more. what an idiotic wast of time and resources.
Exactly...preposterous doesn't even begin to describe this. That's a plan?? Hunt and kill great whites?? They should be arrested for baiting the damn hooks to lure the shark.
