I think adoption is not a popular choice because who wants to go through the misery of the illness of pregnancy, the agony of labor and the absolute hell of delivery....all for literally nothing? If she puts the baby up for adoption, she ruined her body/health for nothing.

It's a pity there's no way to somehow remove the fetus in utero, attach him/her to some sort of created placenta and essentially grow the kid in some sort of controlled environment until all necessary development is completed and the baby is ready for extra uterine life. Perhaps one day medicine could reach that ability, but then I have to wonder....how are we going to be able to provide enough food, water, air for all these new humans? That's a lot of resources to come up with, and we seem fairly lacking now as it is.

And expanding on what Blake said not only an IQ test and psychological tests, but IMO a potential parent should have to go through the same scrutiny that any potential adoptive parent would have to go through. I hear that as tough as it is to adopt, it should be just as difficult to be allowed to have a child through natural means. And if you can't pass that type of screening then you have no business having children. I know I will probably get a lot of flack for that, but it's just my opinion and unfortunately it will never be a reality much to the pain and suffering of other children born to rotten parents like the one in the article.

It is actually a nice thought, unfortunately one that will never happen. Just no good way of controlling people not having kids if they are unfit.

Parenting classes? People are freaking out these days because Gov. officials have suggested it is beneficial to your children to serve them nourishing food! The suggestion of parenting classes may bring some people completly over the edge.

Parenting classes in high school? Kids shouldn't even be thinking about parenthood at that time. They should think about getting an education that will lead to a productive life (and not productive in the sense of having babies). The best we can do is provide free birth control and pro-choice counseling and if need be, free abortions (needless to say, not in high school). Some people should not have kids and some kids no doubt wish they'd never been born. This woman is undoubtedly off her rocker and the kids should be taken away from her and placed in a loving environment.

The problem with parenting classes is that nobody can agree on HOW to parent well. Even parents often can't agree between themselves. And who would decide WHAT to teach? Especially when religion is thrown into the mix, you're treading on seriously thin ice when you deign to tell a person how to raise their children.

In most cases where parenting is taught, it teaches things like handling finances, dealing with stress, where to get help, and other things young parents need to know to deal with life with children. Not how to raise children.

The general hope and expectation is that people will at least follow the law, and treat others at least somewhat fairly, and that when their children grow up, they'll do the same. Unless we want to resort to something like Sharia Law, then we're stuck with the messiness of individuals raising their kids as best they can, and hoping they don't mess them up *too* much!

We already have sex-ed in high school and that doesn't seem to be doing much good because way too many schools are going the way of not offending our kids by telling them the truth about sexually contracted diseases, etc, etc-what it really means to get pregnant as a teen and have a child. There's no way parenting classes would work-parents and school boards wouldn't allow it because they wouldn't want to get sued by other parents thinking their kids are being taught too much, which, I think, is ridiculous-if you don't teach your kids this stuff, it's your own fault when they get in trouble. How's a parenting class going to work if you can't tell them exactly how not to get pregnant in the first place and avoid all the other dangers along the way? I've always been one for telling kids the total truth, and letting them make their own choices after they've been given all the facts about what could happen, supporting them when they mess up. No one ever said parenting was easy but if you're honest with your kids, it might not be so hard. This gal's parents obviously didn't care enough to try and raise their own daughter right before she grew up and had kids of her own.

They are? I've don't think I've ever heard of such a case outside of juvenile court, (in which case they'd remove the child from their parents). Something like "battered child syndrome" might get you off if you kill your abusive parents. And childhood trauma might be used at sentencing in some cases (but not very effectively, from what I've seen). But I'm certain our courts are not "full of cases" where defendants get off because of their upbringing. In fact, I'd guess that *most* repeat offenders had pretty poor childhoods.

Cocaine is used medically as a local anesthesia. Look it up. It's a Schedule II drug, meaning it has approved medical uses. A tiny amount rubbed on the gums (similar to how people used whiskey, --topically!) will numb the area and stop the pain. I'm suggesting that this is what occurred, and this child was never given enough to feel any psychoactive effects. Cocaine is psychologically addictive only, and addiction COULD NOT HAPPEN, if used this way.

Who says I support what was done to those kids? I do not. However, some states DO allow minors to consume alcohol in the home, and a tiny sip now and then wouldn't be especially harmful. But this was *definitely* not within the bounds of normal - or acceptable - behavior. My point was simply that forced sterilizations of bad parents is not something our laws permit, and something that would open up a HUGE can of worms even TRYING to design fairly and within the bounds of our constitution.

Wow, what an argument... why didn't Cloudy bring up other countries for his rant? Such as Germany... where it's legal for kids to have beer. From the time they are born they are allowed to consume beer. The only requirement at the bar is that you can see over the bar. Or what about Italy? Do they not consume wine at every meal? And isn't it the whole family that drinks wine, not just the adults? And if they do, are they arrested for doing it here when they vacation? These MAY be things that aren't true, but things I HAVE heard of over the years. Just curious...
