What shocked me was that one of the perpetrators of this horrible crime had previously been sentenced to prison for starving a man to death by locking him in a closet, and she only got 8 years in prison for it. 8 years for murder? Get real!!

OK, OK, I am sorry for making a little light of the situation. Humor is just one of the ways I deal with tragedies. Sorry if you were truly offended, as it was not my intention. I have never worked in a nursing home nor would I. I cared for my father (in every detailed manner physically and mentally) just before he died. I wish that experience on no one, but I would gladly do it again if it meant having him back. But now let's look at the other side of these posts, shall we?

I could have written about how tragic their plight was and wondered where their families were and dwelt on how awful they were treated. The people that did these things to our elderly and incapacitated, should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and then some. That is my real feelings on this sad topic.

Either one of these views has no added value to their plight nor does it help or hurt their dignity. Are there really people on these posts that think their little tidbits are making a difference? I hope that you really aren't that simple.

The Inquirer reported that Weston served eight years in prison for starving to death 25-year-old Bernardo Ramos after he refused to support her sister's unborn child. She held him in the closet of her North Philadelphia apartment in 1981.

So when did she break out of prison....oh, they let her out?

This definitely qualifies as a parole violation, I wonder when the parole officer visited with her recently....oh they don't do personal visit anymore, they use ESP to check on their charges, because it saves a lot of money.

Getting back to the subject/article at hand, I have a question which no one above my post has raised. The article said they were in that basement at least 10 days. It also said the victims were in Florida, and then in Texas, etc. It also also said the police were trying to contact the victims' families. My question is--where the hell were those families in the first place? No one filed a missing persons report? No one cared enough to check on them? They were all relatively young. What--were these poor folks just dumped somewhere and forgotten because their existence was inconvenient? Somehow I find that fact just as tragic and disgusting as what was done to them. Had their families checked on them frequently, this may never have happened because those creeps would have known the victims had families who cared.

I don't know what I am more pissed about: The fact that 3 pieces of SH@$ thought that treating helpless people this way was an acceptable way to make a living, or that whatever state convicted Weston for murder only gave her 8 years!!!!!

I could speculate that it was a race or class thing; when poor black people kill other poor black people the courts don't seem to care as much, maybe? But the fact of the matter is death by starvation is worse than being shot at point blank range and people have received death sentences for that. I don't care if he was a dead beat dad. We are talking about a slow, agonizing death that is basically a form a torture. And she CHOSE to leave him in a closet for days/weeks and never once attempted to save him in the amount of time she had to reflect on what she was doing. Circumstances dictate that this woman should have never seen the light of day again, nevermind falling off the radar while she violated parole!!!! UNBELIEVABLE. Anyone that had anything to do wiith the decision on the severity of her conviction and/or her sentencing should have the snot beat out of them!!!

I hear you. The sad part about the State ran Facilities is for all the crap the workers have to deal with they are the LOW MAN on the TOTEM POLE pay wise.

That's where the problems begin. The administrators and people who are NOT hands on get a higher salary and don't have to deal with the issues of taking care of people in their condition.

I now this first hand because I take care of my brother who is very ill and has a host of conditions, including Alzheimer/Dementia.

I refuse to put him in a Nursing Home because of stories like this one. However, you really have to have Love of Humanity and Patience to care for the Challenged people.

Because it is not easy and it is a THANKLESS JOB!

This is the very problem with all public/government jobs, the large number of highly paid "administrators" vs those doing the work. The same thing is going on in our school systems and other public works departments.

Closing state facilities is not the answer. And crimes are often not the reason why too many facilities are being closed all over the country; budget problems are always cited.
But this is not a profit-making type of business and the private sector will never take care of the true number of the incapacitated. These types of crimes will increase if state-run facilities continue to close.

State institutions of all sorts - mental wards, children's homes, wards for the mentally handicapped - were found to be very expensive to run. And hard to police, some were good, some were dreadful. Our area had a case in the news where the 20-something son with cerebral palsy was left to starve to death on an old mattress, while his mother and brother spent his disability checks - it was shocking. And another where a little old man was being left in squalor by his caretaker, while she drained his bank account.

So the prisons get the mentally ill, group homes serve the mentally handicapped, foster care is for kids needing that, and the indigent old folks get medicaid and a low end nursing home. None of these services are cheap, and again, difficult to monitor, standards vary by state - and these people are the voiceless and voteless - the most vulnerable.

Reforms would be welcome, but there is not enough money to do it now - there wasn't enough set aside even in "good times". Depressing.

...this story just serves to highlight - in the most extreme and depressing manner - the types of people who often seek employment in taking care of the mentally disabled and needy; who they know they can abuse and who will not "snitch" on them....

Enjoy and also never worry about my personal feelings being affected by these posts. If it were not for opposing views and conflicting thoughts, we as humans would never learn and progress as a species. If we all thought alike, all learning would cease and if we all believed alike and there would not even be a need for more than one person. Kind of like one of my old bosses use to say. You can't publicize the punishment. That's a violation of the criminal's civil rights. We, as a ' civilized ' society, cannot take those rights away from criminals. I think in certain cases like this, it would be a good idea to have a federal panel with the power to strip convicts of certain rights and make the punishment fit the crime, but that won't happen....

Personally this sort of crime should be punished with old school punishment, a public lashing. A lash for every day these poor people suffered, and if by chance they survived that a year in prison for every day they were imprisoned. But then the ACLU would cry foul because of the history this country has with using a whip on people, never mind color. But I for one would be happy to see public lashings come into play for crimes such as these.

This is thanks to the double standards in our justice system. Women get treated less harshly than men. I don't know why, but they do. That woman should have gotten way more than 8 years. That was nothing less than 1st degree murder.

Man, You are absolutely right... and I am a woman. There is only one exception, and that is if the woman is battered and finally kills her abuser... There are a lot of women serving life for that. I am not sure if that is "just"... Anyway, what was done to these helpless people is a crime against everything one holds sacred. Clearly "the system" holds human life in such low esteem, that it allows anyone who starves another human being to ever walk free amongst us after serving only eight years....Anyone capable of such an act demonstrates a sociopathy which endangers society. Likewise that personality, needs to be segregated forever.

Meg I hate to sound so down on the subject of abuse, I have never abused a woman so I don't fully understand why they stay. I will say if she has been abused and not just scream I was abused then she should not be tried for murder. But how many women scream abuse after never reporting and staying with the abuser. Like I said I am no psychologist, never have I had to deal with it, my father was fully in love with my mother until the day he died. She would go out and ride the tractor with him in the fields so they were together. I love my wife with all my heart and could never imagine attacking her in anyway. I treat my wife with the respect that I expect my mother and my daughters to be treated and any man who marries my daughters I will expect no less of or I may be serving a life sentence.

We all have opinions: I am a woman and agree with you on women getting off easy for major crimes. I think that has something to do with men looking at the fact she is a woman more that the facts of the crime. So our jurors are automatically bias by the males.

I agree that what these three people did was horrible and they certainly should face consequences, however turning around and doing horrible things to them doesn't make things right. I do beleive that redemption and forgiveness is possible even for people who di very bad things. Yes, as a society we have an obligation to hold these three people reposiible for their actions and esnure that they do not get the opportunity to repeat their offenses, however ultimately only God has the right to judge and I beleive that is the sentiment that Iamatthebeach is expressing.

Exploiting for money and starving mentally challenged persons defies explanation. Starving a man to death defies explanation. Wishing extreme punishment on the perpetrators of such crimes is very understandable, especially for the repeat offender. How does getting out after serving 8 years for a torture and murder sit with you? I fully understand the enraged commenters here. We have had enough of repeat offenders!

I'm curious to know how these three got hold of their captives? Did they kidnap them from the streets, mental facility? Do these captives have no family that might be looking for them? Or, are they related in some way to one or more of the three vermin? If these creeps are cashing the victims' checks, there must be a paper trail of some kind. I hope we get more information and answers as to just how this could have started.

Yes Aggie. Interesting questions. I'm not sure myself. I'm hoping that once more info is known we'll get our answers. If the victims had the mentality of 10yr olds it's doubtful that they would be living on their own. I'm guessing some form of group home or state facility.

Don't you two realize that these previously State institutionalized people were freed from those protective environments years ago? Then they closed and boarded them up. This is the result of doo gooders and the Courts who did not forsee the eventual affect of releasing such folks, from what were then called looney bins.

It wasn't do-gooders, it was politicians cutting costs - Reagan put the final nail in that coffin, and the prisons haven't been the same since.

Of course, many of the institutions, or warehouses, were reminiscent of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Actually that one was probably well run (except for the lobotomies, not common practice anymore), compared to others - better than the hell hole these poor folks in the story were getting.

You are so right. When Reagan was governor of Calif. He closed them down. No one could be held against their will. People with serious mental health conditions will not go to their Dr. appts and get and take their meds. It just doesn't happen! So we just moved most to prisons, and / or the streets. I hardly ever remember homeless young people before that.

Sometimes, at least only twice, I have run into a blind person and again, a deaf person who had been set out by some family member, or someone, out on the streets of L.A. to beg. The blind was white; the deaf a mexican. But what is the worst to me is the number of people that walk by without finding anything strange about these appearances.

I work with mentally challenged people and this is heart breaking but they get abused at home just like they do any where It saddens me to think that people would do this to another human. If I could afford a big house and had clinets like them I would open my door to all that I could take.......

Are you foolish enough to think that criminals can be identified by their appearance alone? Some of the worse are nicely presented and well spoken. All these pictures can tell you is what these particular people look like. This Weston woman doesn't look like the monster she apparently is.

There is no civilized punishment that fits this crime.

Studying photographs of violent criminals may not help that much. They are psycopaths; at the very least, sociopaths; both of these groups are the most adept at all types of lying of any people in the world.
What actually is more helpful is to spend some time studying what psychologists and neurobehavorists now know about violent behavior.

Social Security and Medicare are NOT free, we pay for that - just not enough. For example, the age 65, and now age 67, eligibility was such that hey, not everyone lived that long - but the worker's widow probably did. People live longer now, on average, and the age should probably be set at 70. Medicare is NOT free, but it was not foreseen, the spiraling costs associated with it - needs a copay or SOMETHING, on a sliding scale.

SS and Medicaid funds are drawn upon, to help pay for the indigent/disabled - who we do not normally see as getting an "entitlement", as they are disabled, or children in school. Make of that what you will, but we'll pay somehow with taxes. I'd prefer a separate fund for SSI/Medicaid, even if administered by the same offices.

Casandra..I think it's the fraud involved with medicare/Social Security that is collapsing the system. These people were apparently involved in fraud as are may so called "doctors" and clinics that rake in millions every year from medicare/social security for fake patients, fake diagnosis, fake everything. Stop the fraud and we can pay for medicare and social security
