I find it interesting my grandchildren had to provide birth certificates and shot records (with up to date shots) this year to register for school.. I guess I should have taken them to a tanning booth, straighten and dyed their hair black, bought clothes at Goodwill, taken the braces off their teeth, and not bathed them for a week and we could of avoided that. As far as racial profiling, the government is more prone to accept someone into a welfare program if they are NOT white. I had a friend who tried to get food stamps and they denied her. She submitted the form again, this time indicating that she was Hispanic. SHE WAS APPROVED!

I'm also wondering how you can get your kid in school w/o committing major fraud. For my kids they want to see one parent in person with photo-id, birth certificate of the child, proof of citizenship/legal status, proof that you rent in the school district, then at least two bills in your name with the same address and/or a copy of your deed.

Stephanie, it works the same way at the mortgage company that employs me. A lady applied and said she was white. She was denied. She resubmitted the application as a hispanic and it was approved. I saw it with my own eyes.

It's actually not legal to keep children out of school. They claim this is for collecting numbers only, but we all know it's to intimidate the parents.

Get real! you may not think that, but in the REAL world things are VERY different. The law is uncostitutional and if for some reasons it ends being enforceable, the Federal courts are going to be FULL of cases based on discrimation!

But Mr. Martinez - who comes from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico and hiked for two days through the desert to enter the United States near Tecate, some 20 miles east of Tijuana - contributes more than most Americans to the solvency of the nation's public retirement system.

Last year, Mr. Martinez paid about $2,000 toward Social Security and $450 for Medicare through payroll taxes withheld from his wages. Yet unlike most Americans, who will receive some form of a public pension in retirement and will be eligible for Medicare as soon as they turn 65, Mr. Martinez is not entitled to benefits.

He belongs to a big club. As the debate over Social Security heats up, the estimated seven million or so illegal immigrant workers in the United States are now providing the system with a subsidy of as much as $7 billion a year.

While it has been evident for years that illegal immigrants pay a variety of taxes, the extent of their contributions to Social Security is striking: the money added up to about 10 percent of last year's surplus - the difference between what the system currently receives in payroll taxes and what it doles out in pension benefits. Moreover, the money paid by illegal workers and their employers is factored into all the Social Security Administration's projections.

Illegal immigration, Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, co-director of immigration studies at New York University, noted sardonically, could provide "the fastest way to shore up the long-term finances of Social Security."

It is impossible to know exactly how many illegal immigrant workers pay taxes. But according to specialists, most of them do. Since 1986, when the Immigration Reform and Control Act set penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, most such workers have been forced to buy fake ID's to get a job.

Currently available for about $150 on street corners in just about any immigrant neighborhood in California, a typical fake ID package includes a green card and a Social Security card. It provides cover for employers, who, if asked, can plausibly assert that they believe all their workers are legal. It also means that workers must be paid by the book - with payroll tax deductions.

IRCA, as the immigration act is known, did little to deter employers from hiring illegal immigrants or to discourage them from working. But for Social Security's finances, it was a great piece of legislation.

Starting in the late 1980's, the Social Security Administration received a flood of W-2 earnings reports with incorrect - sometimes simply fictitious - Social Security numbers. It stashed them in what it calls the "earnings suspense file" in the hope that someday it would figure out whom they belonged to.

The file has been mushrooming ever since: $189 billion worth of wages ended up recorded in the suspense file over the 1990's, two and a half times the amount of the 1980's.

In the current decade, the file is growing, on average, by more than $50 billion a year, generating $6 billion to $7 billion in Social Security tax revenue and about $1.5 billion in Medicare taxes.

In 2002 alone, the last year with figures released by the Social Security Administration, nine million W-2's with incorrect Social Security numbers landed in the suspense file, accounting for $56 billion in earnings, or about 1.5 percent of total reported wages.

Social Security officials do not know what fraction of the suspense file corresponds to the earnings of illegal immigrants. But they suspect that the portion is significant.

Most immigration helps Social Security's finances, because new immigrants tend to be of working age and contribute more than they take from the system. They blew it by making the law too complicated. What if they passed a law that simply stated "It shall be a crime in the state of Alabama to violate US immigration law."? Then state law enforcement officers would have state authority to take whatever steps are necessary to enforce immigration law. Liberal federal judges would not be able to pick the law apart. They could not declare it unconstitutional - it is federal law. We do not need new laws, we need to enforce the laws we already have.

First off, illegals DO pay taxes. They pay sales, payroll taxes, social security taxes, and some even pay property taxes. Sure they may be using someone else SSN, but that still means those taxes are coming out of their checks. A large percentage of illegals are not paid under the table. They have legit jobs (thus the problem with employers just accepting any I-9 identification as valid).

Oh and commonsense, we love aliens...as long as they are legal. :-)

Having grown up in California and experienced at least two amnesty periods, I really don't have some big jones against illegals. Some really do earn the right to stay here and I have no issue with amnesty when applied properly. I've lived to see it done right so I am sure we could figure it out again.

But there still is a right way to get here and those immigration laws should be enforced. I just don't have a whole lot of sympathy for scofflaws especially when it has become so expensive to do so.

I don't really have an issue with all american citizens or legal aliens carrying around identification and proof of citizenship. So I certainly have no problem with a law like this helping to find those wh may be illegal. I have one of those new enhanced driver's licenses. It is like carrying my birth certificate and SSN card around with me. I hope we figure out something easy like that going forward. Nothing personal towards illegals. It is just what is the right thing to do. Most other countries have this one figured out. Not really sure why this would be objectionable (beside wanting to keep the status quo).

I work in an industry that regularly does 10 year FBI background checks and random drug testing (healthcare). I personally fail to see why, if I have to go through all of that - and gladly I might add, it should be a big deal if more people have to jump through their own set of hoops to get or keep a job. The economics is a conundrum. I grew up near the strawberry fields of Seal Beach. We all knew darn well that fruit would have died on the vine if it weren't for illegal labor. That was no big secret. Here in New England, small family farms would quickly go out of business without migrant workers (both legal and illegal). There is a very real concern about that. There are definitely not a bunch of americans, despite the economy, rushing to Vermont in droves to milk cows and harvest organic produce for $9 an hour (that was the price a farmer said he listed in a want ad posted in a local paper). I am generally pre-disposed to feel that anyone working their butts off for 20 years to help put cheap food on our tables pretty much deserves amnesty (assuming no other criminal activity beyond being illegal). But even this has gotten out of control in this whole stupid debate. I mean if those chicken plants in AL need that labor (that suddenly stopped showing up for work) and would close without it, there are plenty natural born americans who would lose their jobs (through no fault of their own). Just sticky that issue is.

In any case, I'm kind of in the middle. Not totally for or against either side. Just hoping we can one day tone down the rhetoric and just figure this all out. Like most issues, this one is pretty gray and no one group is going to get to have everything they want.

So you'll be sitting by the road for an hour and a half on that traffic stop waiting for someone to check ICE for your name and socal security number. Now, if your SS card is badly worn, faded or stained, its night and the streetlight isn't working, the officer's flashlight isn't working, the officer might read it wrong, or there might be a crackle of static on the officer's radio as the officer reads the number and the clerk will get it wrong by maybe one digit. Your social security number will come up as a 'no-match' on the E-Verify system and just like that, you're now suspected of being illegal. You'll be arrested, taken to jail, strip searched and processed and put into holding for however long it takes to figure out the mistake. You don't get a free phone call to call your husband or family or employer to let them know where you are. You don't get to post bail or bond. You don't get to see a lawyer. You don't have the 'right to remain silent' because you're illegal; they can tape whatever you say without your consent, even if you're just talking to yourself. If you're pissed off and swearing and it takes too long to figure it out, they might put you in solitary to 'cool you off'. If you have cash on you to pay them for a phone call (when I went through ICE deportation it was $10 for a 5 minute call, and if the number I called didn't answer, too bad, that was it unless I gave them another $10.) if you do get to make a phone call it's taped; you don't get to say it can't be taped because you have no rights. At some point they will put a piece of paper in front of you and say 'you're suspected of being here illegally as an undocumented immigrant; sign this saying you acknowledge the charges against you and we'll start deporting you to your home country.' This is how they get most legal immigrants; people who are scared and terrified hear the word home and they think 'if I sign this I can go home'.

You will not be allowed to leave until: 1) they figure out their mistake; 2) you sign the deportation paper--and once you sign it even if they find you are legally here either as a legal resident, naturalized citizen, or natural-born US citizen--they will still deport you; 3)you come in front of an ICE/DHS judge. This can take five to ten years.

When/if they do figure out they made a mistake you'll be free to go---but at this point you can't threaten to sue them for unlawful imprisonment; during the time they held you you were illegal (guilty until proven innocent) and as an illegal you don't have the right to protest what happend to you or what they might have done. You go home and you pick up the pieces and you keep your head down and your nose clean and you make sure you never EVER come to ICE attention again because if you pop up on their radar again, like if you commit a felony and the local police arrest you, it comes up that you were detained by ICE under suspicion of being illegal and they look at you even harder. This time they may find some technicality on which they can legally deport you and once you've been deported you do not have right of reentry into the US.

I have been there. I sat in one of those deportaion camps fior 3 years because the jurisdiction in which my parents filed my adoption papers never forwarded those documents to ICE and my parents never suspected they had to handcarry the paperwork to them. I never even knew I was adopted; I found out after ICE strip searched and processed me and told me they were going to deport me. Mom and Dad never told me, never kept the paperwork; they had a birth certificate issued in which they were listed as my parents and thought that was the end of it. They died in a car accident six months before ICE came to arrest me.

Well put, JCVP. There is a reason for all the vilification of illegal immigrants. After all, America is the land of immigrants. These people are not here for evil purposes like terrorists. They just want to make a living for their families, and they do perform work that Americans refuse to do. They do lower consumer prices because they provide cheap labor. They do pay some taxes. It's not as if they take and give nothing in return. Their status as undocumented workers is classified as a misdemeanor. But with they way they are treated, you would think they are mass murderers.

Steve, the authors of the 14th Amendment knew EXACTLY about this sort of situation. At the time, they had people opposing birthright citizenship because it would be extended to Chinese immigrants. They wrote the Amendment anyway.

They come here, earn money to send home, not to mention that most of that income is tax free. Next have you ever seen illegal immigrants with less then 5 or 6 kids. The reason, illegal or not they are eligible for medicaid, food stamps, and other public assistance program simply because those kids were born in the US. All the while both parents still working making a tax free income. Something sound wrong with that picture? I have enough trouble making ends meet raising 2 kids let alone 6, I am not eligible for any public assistance because I make to much a year so it makes me wonder just a bit where that went wrong there. I believe the children are innocent only to a degree, if their parents are here illegally then they are illegally here. It should be the same for all immigrants that come here illegally. It would stop droves who come here for free medical care and public assistance most certainly. If the parents get kicked out the kids get kicked out to, end of problem there. Would reduce by half the immigrants jumping that border. This should be a national law not a state law, and i don't care how many leave Alabama, if they weren't illegal why run. 1. If a cop stops someone who is here legally, was born here...how do they want you to prove that? With ICE/DHS (Immigrations & Customs Enforcement/Dept. of Homeland Security), you're not innocent until proven guilty, you're guilty until proven innocent.

a. Show a driver's license? That can be faked, look at the kids sneaking into clubs and buying alcohol while underage.

b. Social security card? Faked or stolen.

c. Green card? Those can be faked too. There's a black market for those things.

d. Birth certificate? I learned the hard way that's not proof. Birth certificates can be reissued years after a birth to reflect a new birthplace and different birth parents. I never knew I was adopted from overseas as an infant until ICE detained me in a deportation camp--even though I had a birth certificate that said I was born in MD. I was actually born in Korea and adopted in Denver and my parents tried very hard to cover that up so I would never know...and to this day I still don't know why. They never even kept the adoption paper, fearing I would find it--so I spent 3 years in an immigration detainee camp writing to every courthouse in MD, CO and NY to find that adoption decree, because at the time ICE picked me up they had been dead for 6 months in a car accident.

My objection to this is that young people who were brought here by there parents are being used as pawns to find the other illegal immigrants that are in the state. Denying education is terrible. A lot of people think that just because a person is not living in the US legally that they are not pulling their weight, and this is simply not the case. A vast number of illegal immigrants are paying their taxes and many of the services they might expect to receive from their tax dollars are not there for them even though they pay in -- Social Security is a good example. If they are paying their state, local, and federal taxes... denying their children an education is a disgusting thing to do. Seal the border and then we can really start tackling this issue once and for all. We can't take on the task of figuring out what to do with the illegal immigrants that are here without first stopping more from coming in. The men and women who are here do play an important role in our economy and work force -- like it or not.

how can the schools NOT check the status of its students? Oh i know, let's put all of the heat on Employers to push out illegals. Yeah, right. We own a business that would get fined if we employ illegal aliens. But the govt. now rewards illegals by giving $$$$ for education. I want to SUE the US govt. for not protecting MY rights. USA and California in particular has become a nightmare for its citizens.

I've had to prove my citizenship many times in my life- starting a job, getting a drivers license, starting my son at preschool, even getting a library card. How is it that those are here illegally can be exempt from that?

This is not about discriminating agains brown citizens, if a man wearing a 3piece suite and european man bag commited a crime, the cops would stop and investigate everyone that fit that description in the area. But crime descriptions are not of men wearing 3piece suites but nappy hair, hoodie, and pants falling off.

There is a difference between 'illegal' and 'undocumented'. 'Noncriminal immigrants' are people like me--ICE was missing my adoption record. I was legally brought to the US on a baby green card and a baby passport, legally adopted and the paperwork filed in local jurisdiction, my birth certificate reissued to show my mother and father as my birth parents. Then, because they never wanted me to find out I was adopted, they threw away all that paperwork. They never even kept the adoption paper, fearing I would find it--so I spent 3 years in an immigration detainee camp writing to every courthouse in MD, CO and NY to find that adoption decree. because by the time all this happened they had been dead six months in a car accident--and believe m, finding out you are adopted and undocumented at the moment you are being strip-searched and processed by ICE is the absolute WORST way to find out you are adopted!!!

To get my drivers license renewed last year, i had to have 2 picture id's, my ss card and birth certificate, and at least 3 pieces of mail with my name and mailing address on them. I had to wait while this was verified with police computer checks which took 30 minutes. All the while I'm taking a test again for a drivers license I've had for better then 2 decades. You know what, I didn't care in the slightest. I have the ID, I have the paperwork, and if my govt asks to see it sure no problem. I don't consider that profiling, I consider that my govt making sure I am obeying the constitution as a citizen of this country. I spent better then 30 minutes proving i was an American and i didn't even care that it took that time because i believe its my job and an honor. So get off the profiling kick, yes we all say we won't do it, but we all do it everyday. Do i think I'm innocent, no, but I'll be damned if my taxes are going to continue to pay for illegal immigrants and their kids unless they damn well wanna be citizens and do the same damn thing i have to do. Either be wanna be equal under the law or get out! Stop state aid to illegals once and watch how fast they get out, education for their kids, umm thats not a right, its the law that every legal child must attend school from a certain age thru a certain age. commonsense--perhaps you will find this amusing, but Alabama was one of the first places with re-concentration camps. Adolf Hitler got his idea of putting people in concentration camps (where people of their ethnicity were "concentrated") from the US. We gathered up Native Americans--who "didn't belong" and refused to move west to Indian Territory (a place that belonged to other Native American peoples)--and put them in re-concentration camps. Many died there--those who did not either "chose" to go to Indian Territory "voluntarily" or were among the hard-core (often blue-eyed, blond-haired, and only about 1/256th Native--but wealthy and whose land someone wanted) who were force-marched out.

The people here who are "Mexican" are usually at least in part Native American. They have forebearers who were born in the area that is now the US--but because no one had birth certificates back then (heck, a lot of native-born Hispanics don't have birth certificates now--even though their families have been in the southwest region that is now the US since those areas were made part of the US), it's a little hard for them to prove it. If you have brown skin, here in the US, the assumption is that you don't "belong" here unless you can "prove" it--even though the people with brown skin were here first. There's a little term called "14th Amendment American" that is used to discuss brown-skinned people whom others (usually in the South) don't think are actually citizens--they are all "illegals" to that group of people.

When the border vigilantes go to Appalachia and start driving out light-skinned, fair-haired, light-eyed people who have no documentation, then we will have some logic. Until then, Jim in Arizona, I don't suppose we will be following any logic other than that of the white supremacist. (And, yes, oddly there are many people who are Hispanic and also those who are of African descent who behave the same way--there were Jewish people who sympathized with the Nazis and with the KKK--people are odd that way.)

I think that people who aren't documented should have a way to get documented--if they have been in the US since they were very small children and have a paper trail showing this, then they should have a path to citizenship (whether they are light or dark, Appalachian or Hispanic) without having to apply for a visa. I am okay with making the path difficult--but I am not okay with having no path. I also think that undocumented aliens who cannot prove that they have been here since childhood should go home--and then they can re-enter with proper documentation that dramatically limits their stay. I think these things because I am being logical and I'm not one of those lock-step, mindless drones in northern Arizona or Alabama who get bent out of shape when someone speaks in a language other than English right in front of them.

Seriously, guy, there are many many European Americans who call themselves "native Arizonans" to the amusement of those of us who understand history. European Americans are no more native to Arizona than people from Mexico are native to Alabama--in fact, they are far less so. They are citizens of the US and residents of Arizona--just as many Hispanics are citizens of the US and residents of wherever they happen to alight. And, they shouldn't have to be pulled over and prove their citizenship every single time someone notices that they look Hispanic any more than European Americans in Arizona should be pulled over for driving while white.

But, then, people don't usually get pulled over for driving while white. Because states aren't allowed to supersede federal authority on immigration.

Why? Because 1) there would be no consistent immigration policy from state to state and 2) states tend to have only parochial interests and frequently ill-informed and knee jerk policy concerns; the latter being amply exampled by the majority of posts above.

But the states attempting this seem to be striving to uphold the federal law (since the feds have been lax in it), not supersede it. Are not the states supposed to uphold the laws of the land over their own? Please enlighten me if I'm incorrect in this? Makes no sense to me that the federal government would be upset with a state because they obey and uphold the laws of the higher government and so sounds suspect to me.

States like Alabama are not merely "upholding" federal immigration law, they are authoring their own...some aspects of which are if not outright unconstitutional, then highly suspect of it.

You do know that Alabama didn't require E-Verify for all employers- until this year? Do you know there are only 18 states that actually mandate E-Verify in some form? Do you know what GOP organization has fought tooth and nail against E-Verify and have filed lawsuits against it? Why none other than the US Chamber of Commerce. No, amnesty proposals such as the Dream Act are the only rational and practical way to deal with an already extant problem of having 12-20 million illegals in the country who have been here for years and are already embedded into the fabric of society, with families, businesses and paying taxes. The nativists on here clamoring for all illegals to be deported aren't just ill-informed and emotionally off the wall...they are also lacking any common sense.

the sad thing is she has reported these companies many times for using illegal workers. has anything been done about it? the answer is no, they get away with it without any repercussions happening to them.

so what has happened? she has been forced to downsize from 40 legal tax paying people that made enough to make mortgage payments on their own homes to only 20 employees. so tell me how is this currently helping our legal citizens in this country? oh and before people start yelling the race card. most of these illegals are russian and czech.

Some illegals work under the table, true...but many are fully embedded in society and have been for decades, all the while raising families and paying taxes the same as everyone else. The idea that these people are not paying their way and being a total burden on the American taxpayer is simply false - the truth and fact of this is easily found on the web by anyone actually interested in pursuing it.

The concept and reality of the under-the-table market has always been around and participation in it has little to do with being an illegal immigrant. many trades people utilize it in order to survive.

so how about this for a solution then cullheath. the ones that have been paying taxes and supporting the US; the same as our legal citizens be granted citizenship. the ones who have not been paying taxes, get sent back to the countries of their origin. i can see that as being fair. if they have been paying taxes there would be documentation to prove it through the IRS. that way you can see who can stay and who must go. it would also reward the ones who have helped support the country they are now living in.

Maybe, but I'll have to think about the ramifications of that. Some people I'm sure would have been contributing taxes without the IRS trail for various reasons for instance.

Establishment Republicans are chiefly to blame for allowing the numbers of illegal immigrants to grow to the level that deporting them causes huge problems for us economically (people aren't going to relocate completely for the charming chance to pick vegetables very briefly for a few dollars an hour in unsafe conditions--leaving us with un-picked produce) and in terms of diplomacy.

Obama has halted deportations only very recently, and then only on a case-by-case basis. There has been no blanket ban of deportation. Obama is actually catching criticism from those who are most directly aware of deportation--Hispanic citizens and lawmakers:

In fiscal year 2010, the last full year of data, ICE removed nearly 393,000 undocumented immigrants -- a record, and almost 24,000 more than in FY2008, Bush's last full fiscal year in office.

CRIMINAL INCREASE

Is Obama being evasive--yeah, he is--but he is evading letting people know just how many people he is actually deporting who were entrenched citizens (quite a few). On the other hand, Bush didn't include those numbers of people apprehended at the border because he was basically not bothering to apprehend anyone.

It really annoys me that people won't bother to look at how this particular situation came about--George W. Bush was very, very soft on illegal immigration--and want to blame Obama without having proper information. I think Obama is doing a fairly good job of deporting--especially since he is annoying Hispanics who are threatening not to vote for him because of the deportation rate. And I think that Republicans are keen to blame him--and can do so because the Republican base has a really, really short memory span.

Rontron, If you've spent even 5 minutes reading NewsWhine it should be clear to you that the "will of the majority of citizens" is not exactly clear. Judges are supposed to interpret and apply the law, not act as pollsters blindly following the will of 50.00001% of the American Sheep.

The reality is, despite all the bitching and complaining and hateful rhetoric, all non-biased calculations indicate that illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than they cost by their presence. They pay taxes because they are automatically deducted by most of the companies they work for and they tend to underutilize services because they are afraid of being exposed.

And to all the "waa, waa, waa, they're selectively enforcing the laws" crowd, remember that the next time you get stopped for speeding and get a warning.

Ron, the point was that the government selectively enforces laws all the time. They don't have the time, money or resouces to catch and prosecute everything anyone does wrong anytime.

The right to walk around without "proper papers" is one of America's long-standing and cherished freedoms. Other nations have long employed documentation checks as a way to control where people may go, where they may live, how they are employed and so forth. - Nazi Germany used documents to segregate the Jews and Gipsy's. - The Soviet Union used documents to control the movement of its citizens within their nation. - Mainland China uses documents to control where its citizens may legally reside. We are a freedom loving people and one of our cherished freedoms is the right to be anonymous, as long as we are law-abiding..

In this country majority rules, people are elected by the majority, laws are written by and passed by majority. Laws if written correctly should not be subject to interpretation but applied as written. The majority of citizens for Alabama have passed a law they want. A single judge should not be able block it, but enforce it.

Those illegals are often paid cash and as such no taxes and those that do don't generally exceed the minimum income required to pay taxes. They certainly do not pay enough to cover education of their off spring. Local schools get Federal/State Money based solely on head count, raising the cost to everyone else.

I spent a lot of time in Mexico, I had to have proof of legal entry, vehicle registration and passport on my person. I have been stopped for no reason and had to show my documents.

You would like the majority to rule, but sadly it doesn't. It doesn't at work - the boss rules. It doesn't at home - the parents rule. It doesn't in so many more places than it does. Laws are passed by the majority, but a single Senator can put an anonymous hold on any bill for any reason and it will never see the light of day. The president can issue executive orders that have the force of law. Agencies of the executive branch issue regulations that are binding on everyone without a single vote. And yes, a single judge sitting on a federal appeals court can issue a preliminary injunction keeping the state of Alabama from enforcing a law the appeals court has questions about. That's the way our country works. It is not a democracy, it is a representative republic and the majority rarely rules. Reality sucks, huh?

If the majority ruled, Obamacare would not have passed, or many other of his ridiculous programs. Illegals would be treated as illegals. Get in line with the proper paper work and become legal and you'll be welcomed with open arms.

I'm pretty sure that these excerpts from the Bible have fallen on deaf ears, friend. They only remember OT, An eye for an eye, selling your children into slavery, and Noah's Ark.

The Bible also says to obey the law of the land. That law says if you come to America by air, boat, swimming, internal combustion engine or walking you must go through the proper channels.

Where are the ticket takers at the airports, borders or quays? Who determines the quotas? Congress. Who determines if those quotas are filled? Only God knows.

Where I live there are English classes for foreign students, including adults. There are also foreign language classes available to everyone. The problem is that most Americans have little interest in learning a foreign language. I spent 30 years working overseas and most of my American co-workers did not even attempt to learn the language spoken in the countries where I worked. They spoke English and expected everyone else to communicate with them in English. The same goes goes world geography and history, most American would have a hard time finding Yemen or Thailand in a map and don't have a clue who Alexander the Great or the Pharoes were.

This is not really an immigration issue. Its not really an issue at all. The US has no official languange and there is no requirement to learn English. It is most definately in a person's best interest to speak English here but you could probable get by in many places only knowing Spanish.

funny thing is, when i was in school i wanted to take spanish as an elective in 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, I finally got it my junior year in high school. all the previous years i was told, take it next year by the teachers.

by time i finally got it, i didnt care, i was a junior and was in my i dont give a crap attitude all year, didnt learn a thing.

I have lived overseas for 3 years and traveled around europe as much as I could. If I couldn't speak the language I had a translation dictionary with me. Keep in mind the US is a large nation traveling the length of Texas would be like traveling from the UK thru France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czeh Republic and into Poland with several different national official languages spoken. So we have less need to speak other languages in our nation except to translate fraudulant immigrants that the hooker that tried to get money from the IMF head who called her boyfriend in prison and told him about the scam.

Also they don't want someone that speaks spanish for bi lingual they want someone who speaks mexican. True spanish speakers are looked down on.

I do have some living next door to me. Two great kids who speak English. Today their Mom gave me some awesome homemade bread and the boys showed me their new puppies. Sometimes I throw their frisbee back over the fence.

I concede that where I am living may not exactly be California, but this little town just made 49 percent Latino. Crime is flat and municipal taxes are up. Yes, there is a meat processing plant. Respectful, family oriented and not monsters. Call it like I see it.

This is America and we were built on immigration. Letting millions of people from countries all over the world here without the means to follow up on their temporary visas, school visas or whatever they are here under is stupid.

I think the Feds could spend more money on keeping more people out while they work on deporting those who aren't fit to stay here and getting the rest of them on their way to being naturalized citizens.

I don't believe we in the United States are so single-minded as to focus all our attention on this one issue at the expense of other pressing issues of our time. It happens to be the issue presented in this article that is the focus of this discussion.

Perhaps it is you who are trying to take us away from focusing on this very "real problem". The reality is that the problem was not created by the illegal alien, the problem was created by OUR mishandling of the illegal alien despite the fact that we have solutions in place (we just don't bother to us them).

You sound very blind,...this may not be the biggest problem but its on its way,..let me paint a picture,...California is out of money...get it,,,every other state is on its way,...Almost ALL illegals coming here to America are on warfare, medicare, free food services, food stamps, discount, free education,..free free free guess who pays for it...we do it comes out of our taxes,...guess who pays nothing for it,...illegals pay nothing,...they work under the table and their spouses and children collect free money etc....there is no equality... this is common knowledge,...do you see how many kids they produce that they can not afford,...I rather for my tax money to go into the HIGHER education for our american children,...everything is being cut because more money has to go to new people having babies that cant afford them....how much of the strain can we handle,...do you not see the timing in this ,,,,we are being over populated, you cant see how many illegals or here,,,,,,how much more can we handle,,,they are not going to stop having babies,...this is a problem,...schools are way over populated our children are not getting the attention they need....

what i am saying is that there are current immigration laws in place that are not being enforced. A legal immigrant that has come to this country using the current law to get here is fine. they should be rewarded. If someone comes to this country illegally they should not be rewarded with the perks that citizenship of this country provides.

myself after talking with many from both sides illegal and legal, I feel that the legal immigrants feel more pride in our country then the illegal ones. they payed their dues to be here. they had no free ride. they strive more to succeed. while the illegals are just a drain on our national resources and the citizens that came here legally.
