You missed the point. The Bummer has been pushing his jobs bill and this is part of his plan - put the free-lance pharmacists back to work on the local street corners thereby increasing the number of dispensers while reducing the overhead by not having a brick-and mortar dispensary. It results in a higher profit margin with more money out on the streets in the hands of the people.

The legal MJ business is cutting into the illegal cartels profits. They have obviously paid off the right politicians to shut down the competition.
This is just the latest step in our country making the rich richer, absolutely destroying the middle class, and making the lives of the poor absolutely suck. Just this week California was ordered to fix its overcrowded prison system, I don't see how intensifying the war on drugs, and specifically targeting medical marijuana users is going to help in any way. All this does is put money into big Pharma and the Mexican cartels, eliminate a perfectly good source of tax revenue, increase crime, and provide constituents for the wardens of the newly privatized prison system. All because of a plant that grows naturally and makes people feel better. Screw impeachment, time for a revolution people! I for one don't want to be ruled by Insurance companies, the banks, wall street and big Pharma, yet all of our elected officials (both parties) are taking us down that road. I guess I'm just gonna have to wash down some Xanax with a bottle of Jack... ridiculous.

piegon, it is illegal for pharmacies to provide marijuana. It is also illegal for a doctor to write a prescription (which is needed for a pharmacy) for medical marijuana due to the way the law is written.

If they are giving 90 days, then you will have to play their game and open/close/open/close. New business name, new location.
Maybe the state just needs to issue 90 day permits.
It will be hard getting 3 month leases, but if the Federal Gov't wants to defy the rules, then nothing is off the table as far as ways to defy them.
As I read the law, if the Federal Agents seize anything, they will be in possession of marijuana without a permit under state law. California should jail them for it. (I doubt this will happen).
But it sure would be fun to watch the Federal Agents in jumpsuits facing Felonies.
After all, how do you tell if an agent is going to keep it for himself, or take it in as evidence? It would go in his car's trunk either way.

As a rule when politicians are on the take their always Republicans. We all know that is true because Republicans just love tax cuts for the rich, repressive laws and prohibition. In this case though it looks like the big drug companies have paid off the Democrats too.
If Obama was supporting the laws and Constitution as some dimwitted closet communist supporters claim then he would start by detailing how exactly and by what Constitutional authority does the federal government have a law making the sale or possession of anything within the State of California illegal.
Most of these spurious federal laws are made illegitimately under the interstate commerce clause but a Medical Marijuana dispensary operating in California is not in any way conducting interstate commerce. The plants are grown in California and sold in California therefore the federal law doesn't pass muster under the Constitution.
California ought to sue and apply for an immediate injunction. Honestly, a state needs to stand up to the outrageous conduct of the feds by passing laws and enforcing them against federal officials that overstep their bounds.

There are certain laws that are under federal jurisdiction and regardless what the state approve if is against the federal law they are in fault. If they want to challenge the the government it must be in court. Same as Obamacarenow is challenge in court. However in both cases is state right. If the cour decide that it is legal , they must pay to the IRS like any other business. However production at home should not be legal .

Obama can shove his anti-pot program up his arse.
This was prompted by the expected legal challenge to the IRS ruling that the dispensaries can not deduct business expenses. The feds were afraid that there failure to take action against the dispensaries would be used in court to say that marijuana has in effect been legalized because the fed has not taken any action against medical marijuana. This whole thing is completely absurd. All shutting down the dispensaries will do is send more business to the criminals. People who need the marijuana to have a decent quality of life due to medical conditions are not going to stop smoking it because the dispensaries have been shut down. They will just now be forced to buy the marijuana from criminals. This is also a very sad day for state's rights. There is a reason that 16 states allow medical marijuana, the people want it and it is proven to work. The federal government has much more important things than to worry about shutting down legitimate businesses that are operating in compliance with state law and, oh by the way, paying a lot of taxes.
There is noone we can trust except maybe Dennis Kucinich. This has nothing to do with right or left just ignorance and the cotton industry, the oil industry, the pharm. industry and all of their money lobbying everyone in washington. This is a waste of resources in a time when there is none to waste.
The Constitution gives the Federal government just 10 things that Congress can regulate and none of those 10 have to do with drugs and in the case of Marijuana, flowers.
While states will use the courts that is not their only recourse. States have militaries and police and they should start arresting federal officials overstepping their Constitutional bounds. Sure there is no one with the guts in politics but really a state ought to tell the government that if you plan on doing unconstitutional things then you will only do that in this state under military occupation.

In addition, our farmers would also be able to grow hemp. Per a documentary I saw recently, hemp is more efficient than trees for making paper. They indicate that 90% of the plant material can be used whereas with trees only 60% can be used. They claim that we are destroying our forests for nothing when we can plant a crop and get better results.
I am so sick of our gov screwing everything up and causing dramatic harm to citizens in the process. It sucks when gov releases violent criminal because they need room for a marijuana case. I'm against medical marijuana, but I'm for legalizing marijuana. One I do not understand the need to buy from a marijuana dispensary in the first place. If you are only allowed to grow a few plants then why not at home. Please don't be brain dead and tell me that you live in a Condo or apartment. I can't stand obama, but those that have said he's not enforcing imigration. I agree but only to a point. deportations under his administration are far outpacing Bush. I don't need medical marijuana yet, but still this is disappointing. It was a comfort to know that if my pain gets more severe I could try marijuana to ease it.

I am sure I am not saying anything new to you. Look into oils. Especially hemp oil which can be bought in health food stores in black bottles. Keep refrigerated. Sorry if I am repeating what you already must know. Hemp oil helped me tremendously with cancer and the side effect of modern medicine.

The same week that the IRS removes business expense exemptions from dispensaries to increase taxes, the government announces that all dispensaries must close. So now NO tax money, and people will be supporting drug dealers when they buy their pot. Brilliant idea, the Mexican cartels need the extra money, all those bullets aren't cheap.

You obviously know nothing about medicine. It helped me, a three time cancer patient and survivor. Given two year I now have 15 years above and a family with two wonderful boys growing up into great men. It has helped thousand with MS, ALD, and glaucoma, etc. Speak from a point of knowledge or experience or do not speak. There is nothing in the Constitution about "pot", or any other drug for that matter, and therefore it is an issue relegated to the 10th amendment.
Now, would I vote for it?? No way, but if the people of my state did, then I would just have to live with it. I also don't believe the "medical" part of it either, as far as the pot shops go. It's just a way to incrementalize it on the way to fully being legalized. But again, if California wants to do that, then they have every right to do so.

I'm not a smoker, but if state law approves use with a doctor's note, and regulates the sales, I don't understand why the the feds are going after the dispensaries. I could maybe agree with a push for stricter accountability or tighter rules, but threatening people who are legal under state law seems to be an overreach.

In response to your comments. The reason medial marijuana is not sold in Pharmacies is due to FDA regulations prohibiting it. The Government seems to be operating under the 1920's "Refer Madness" propaganda that got a plant criminalized to start with. I remember a few months back, reading an article about how big pharma wants to get into the MMJ industry, growing it in their own warehouses, and extracting canniboids, then putting them into pill form such as Marinol. It went on to explain how they are pushing to have cannabis reclassified from schedule 1 (drug with no known medical value), to schedule 3 (drug with some medical use). As mentioned above, Cali currently has laws restricting the MMJ dispensaries as being not for profit:

It is not okay to let banks circumvent the law and rob people. It is not okay to circumvent the Fed policy on illegal immigration. And it is not okay to circumvent the law on what is considered an illegal drug by the Fed.

A Seal Sex Lover Party member, who is his exact opposite, is exactly the same in that they think only certain laws should actually be followed.
Common sense is certainly not what it is made out to be, which is only 'common' if a person agrees with it. If you want pot to be legalized, and then incorporated, and then taxed ad nauseum, and then made into pure crap...which is what is being asked for...you go through the proper steps. I'll be damned if I want to take a road trip from my home in Florida to see my family in Ohio and have to study all of the laws of Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky to plan that trip without going to jail. I can understand some differences in traffic laws that are clearly posted. I do not want to be charged with lewd behavior because I kissed my wife on the way into a small local diner in Georgia or face arrest for kicking a hunting dog in Kentucky that threatened imminent attack.
We can all appreciate and respect differing customs in different states. We must insist that all fifty states obey federal mandates to prevent total chaos when traveling from one state to the next. There must be a large degree of symmetry among states to protect the American people from abuse merely because they are not a Hoosier in Indiana or a Buckeye in Ohio.
States rights were important to the framers of the Constitution to prevent a centralized federal government from becoming a dictatorship. The framers also made sure that all federal laws supersede all state laws. They provided for a fair amount of representatives from all states to make federal laws for the entire United States of America. That is as it should have been.
Those that advocate states rights and their laws should supersede federal laws are fools that may be loyal Texans, Floridians or Nebraskans. They are all traitors to their American birth rite, the Founding Fathers and the United States of America. Don't like a particular federal law? Hold your representatives feet to the fire to change that law. In the mean time, your state has absolutely no right to flaunt that law with opposite laws of their own.

The only problem with electing Ron Paul, is that even if the general public voted him in as POTUS, the corporations that run the country wouldn't stand for it, so they'd find some way that the election was "invalid", like they did in 2000. Try Alaska, where it used to be legal. Even in California the vote was quite close, I understand. The prohibitionists are starting to come around. If you read the Time magazine article regarding the failed war on drugs, there's pretty compelling evidence to stop enforcing the ban on everything.
I wouldn't be a drug user if it was legal, but many of the worlds problems and almost all of our problems with mexico and latin american countries revolve around the completely failed war on drugs.

I've also heard there are many regulations coming for otc asthma inhalers. Seems like something about the co2 they emit being bad for the environment. Obviously above I mentioned a few uses for Hemp, but there are thousands of uses for this single plant unlike any other naturally grown product. Recreational use is one use I don't care that much about however could create the highest tax revenue. 80% of the cost of a pack of cigarettes is taxed, for recreational use the governement could enforce the same amount of taxes on a pack of joints. Cigarettes are cheap to produce and so would be Marijuana from the hemp plant, would probably cost less than what people smoking it now are paying.

The biggest wrong being done here is that the Feds are not charging MJ users with MJ crimes. They are confiscating and charging them with weapons violations and taking their property. Weapons violations are much more serious than half an ounce of weed, so they could get prison sentences. I am a 60 year old woman with serious health issues. I no longer use MJ because I am afraid that they will charge me with a weapons violation and confiscate my rifles and my husbands rifles--that we use to hunt with. I can't use opiates because they are addicting, so I just sit around in pain...a lot of pain. MJ was recommended by my doctor. I never used before and got my card legally and it helped so much. Now that is gone. Do they really want 60 year old women with fibromyalgia, history of cancer, degenerative disc disease, and other issues?

BTW Chris, doctors are legally prescribing mdma (ecstasy) to elderly hospice patients, to help them deal with their fears of death. I don't condone ecstasy, I think its a poor drug for this problem, compared with the natural alternatives, but nonetheless, it is still being legally prescribed, and has had incredible results.
The entire treatment however, is counter intuitive. Why give people these drugs to help them deal with the fear of death at the end of their lives, instead of the beginning?

It varies widely, but I only buy it when it's under $2 a pound. Lately my husband has been getting ground turkey sold in rolls from a discount grocer for $1.50 per pound. I only buy meat when it's very cheap, and that's when I buy it in quantity. Last week I had to turn down whole boneless pork loin for $1.79 a pound, which you really can't beat, because the freezer was full.
Venison is delicious--when a hunting friend gives away some. I live in Western PA where deer are a common sight even in the city of Pittsburgh, and lots of people hunt. But how much do guns, ammo, and other hunting gear cost? I do think it's a hobby for most.
I fully agree that drugs should be legal, especially for medical purposes because that's not just a right, it's a moral imperative. I just wonder why anyone would put their right to own hunting rifles above having the marijuana they need for their health. You could probably get your meat even cheaper just by breeding rabbits on a small scale. I keep a few giant rabbits as pets--very inexpensive to care for, especially if you let them graze on the lawn.

What a ridiculous farce and miscarriage of executive power. The public is strongly in favor of the dispensary system. The system was working and the industry was developing. The businesses were creating tax revenue. No crime associated with it. In fact, it took the transaction out of the dangerous/criminal black market and brought it into the light where it was subject to regulation and oversight (see Colorado).

So much so that, early in the Obama presidency, Obama issued a directive NOT to prosecute distributors in states with medical marijuana laws. Rangewolf - I agree that if the feds get away with this that no state law would be safe. The feds already use blackmail to get states to pass laws they want by threatening to withhold fed highway funds if they don't pass a particular law by a certain date. A couple of examples are raising the drinking age to 21, adopting the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards as state law to name just two. Governors need to grow some spine and tell the feds to keep their highway money and only maintain state highways and local roads, and not to come blaming the state when the US highways and Interstates fall apart, but they are all spineless lapdogs of the self aggrandizing hypocrites in DC.
The Interstate Commerce clause of the constitution does not apply in this case since the product is grown, harvested, transported, and sold in a single state, not crossing any state lines, which is required to become interstate commerce, as such it is intrastate commerce which congress has no authority whatsoever to regulate.
This is as much a states rights issue as gay marriage is since there is absolutely no constitutional authority for the federal government to be involved. Perhaps talk of secession by the 16 states involved might be enough to get the feds off their back with an election coming up and all, talk of secession and having the policies of the POTUS responsible for even causing the discussion to come about would not be good publicity at all. Seems it would be of CA's benefit to widely publicise the policy statement of the POTUS in 2009 that his administration would not waste federal resources pursuing and prosecuting medical marijuana dispensaries operating legally under state law in order to highlight his commitment to truth and solid commitment to saying what he means, and meaning what he says (For a while anyway). I don't believe that bringing his own words back to haunt him will do him any good in the upcoming election since this is proof he can't, or won't keep his word. What happened......... mobsters and criminals seized control of alcohol distribution leading to the creation of a black market and an increase in criminal activity. The reason alcohol is legal today is because the government wisely realized that taxing and regulating alcohol distribution was a better alternative, then letting criminals control it. Essentially they decided that the prohibition of alcohol was not possible.
In the meantime our countries war on drugs IS blatantly handing over control of cannabis to the Mexican cartels and thousands of people a year are losing their lives because of it.

Daniel in DC...Until you have had to kick opiates after a long life threatening illness, you will not say "medical MJ Puleeze". It was pure hell. The only help I got was getting my MJ card and I am 60 years old and never used before. It helped the pain and helped me so that I could sleep for 5 or 6 hours straight. It took two months to get off the opiates but I haven't taken any for over 9 months. Now, I can't use the MJ because I am afraid they will come and take my sport rifles and my husband's property. Life is pretty miserable these days. Don't laugh unless you have been through the doctor ordered hell of narcotics.
Rangewolf - I have to disagree with you on that one. There are laws presently in effect in every state that make DUI/DWI illegal whether medical marijuana is legal there or not. Where medical marijuana is legal there is regulation and one has to be at least 18 and provide an ID to get pot. Where it's illegal nobody is checking IDs and the legal age for buying it is $20 no matter how young you are.
I mean where it's legal there is some regulation and control, where it's illegal there is no regulation or control, and no taxes collected from it. There are already laws in effect to take care of any feared behavior from marijuana use. Studies have shown that where it's legal that crime actually goes down.
Make it legal. There is control, there is tax revenue. Why do we want to give more control to the cartels and gangs? If people want to smoke pot, let them. Big freaking deal! I've only smoked it a few times, way back in high-school (20 yrs ago) and don't really give a rats ass about it now. Apparently it's a violation of federal law. Under Consitutional preemption, state law is trumped by Federal law and you can be prosecuted. It's legal, but the fact it's being enforced is really disappointing and baffling. I don't take drugs, but I don't understand taking away the rights of people who choose to do so, as long as they are responsible for any wrongdoing that might result (same as DUI).
What worries me, is that this is being done for political reasons, to appeal to the conservatives in anticipation of next year's election.

You need to realize the President doesn't make laws, nor does he un-write laws. The current enforcement is based on laws that have been there for quite awhile. When you have enough pressure to keep pot illegal, you have more pressure to enforce current laws, even if you disagree with it. Only when the federal laws are changed to allow pot growth, sales and use, will you see states rights able to capitalize on it. You should stop looking for bad guys and start looking at who has, and has not, voted to legalize pot. And look on both sides of the isle.

I agree the medical use was iffy, my mom took it for cancer treatments (pill form to make her gain weight, she went from 95 to 125 in 4 weeks) but she did get it from a pharmacy/doctor. She didn't go smoke it, and buy it from a dude with dreadlocks... the stories that were advertised were not true medical problems like my mother. I agree what I saw was a farce but, maybe these were baby steps?

I think that this business could dwarf the tobacco industries gross revenue and tax revenue which happens to be 1.3 bill in 2010, taxes are half of that from what I understand. Not sure how many jobs would be created? My point is that no matter if the taxes were 50% I don't think there would be a big black market, although I think much more than that and there could be, like we are starting to see with cigarettes. This would be a big business, or rather it is a big business, but if it was legal it would bigger and taxable and good.

actually, legalization will stimulate the economy and create new jobs...you can make bio-fuel out of it, replace all coal use for power plants (electricity), give farmers a viable crop to grow, and of course there's the medical aspect of marijuana....it doesn't cover just cancer patients, you can use marijuana for nearly everything from headaches to depression...you can make plastic goods with the crop, which is better than oil based plastic products from shopping bags to the cover of your computers or laptops, cell phones, etc...you can even make cement with it....particle boards for construction...hell, even food for the homeless....and marijuana also can help junkies and alcoholics quit their drugs of choice...while i realize hemp and marijuana are separate and both separately answers the needs i posted, they are both from the same species of plants, just kissing cousins, and the federal government says they are the same thing. so legalization is absolutely necessary just to be able to grow industrial hemp...

Medical Marijuana is chosen by many patients for several reasons:
1. it is a naturally occurring compound instead of something cooked up in a lab.
2. it has medicinal properties for the control of nausia, pain, and insomnia that other medications simply do not provide.
3. they have tried all other 'conventional' drugs without success in handling their condition.

@Mable, throwing people in jail forces the breakups of families, which in turn forces father-less families to go on welfare, so I think you don’t know what you’re talking about. Look at the statistics. Since the drug war began, incarcerations have gone up at the same time as the number of welfare recipients. Pot does not make people any less likely to work a job, being in jail does. There are plenty of alcoholics that work jobs, and many more casual users that still work. Alcohol is many times more toxic and devastating to users than the strongest pot will ever be. Get your facts strait before you make stupid comments.
I have friends in CA, they get the medical marijuana. They also get chemo and one has AIDS. Sorry, it is easier on the body than the pharmacueticals and for those with incurable illnesses, sometimes it is better to use pot than oxycontin.

What I want is for people who need the medical benefits of MMJ to be able to get the help they need. This isn't the days of Reefer Madness, & we now know that marijuana does not turn you into a lifeless bum. I know people who have been working for 40 years, have raised healthy, functional families, acting just like "real people," all the while smoking pot. Marijuana can help people with cancer, glaucoma, MS, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, & many other conditions/diseases. Why shouldn't they be allowed to get what helps them? It's a natural plant, not a chemicalized "drug". I don't see a problem with MMJ.

I live in L.A. and there's a marijuana dispensary 2 blocks from my office that I drive by everyday. I'd say that well over half the people I see going in and out of that place are in better physical shape than I am, and I keep myself quite fit. Most of the people that patronise that dispensary are not ill, just looking for a cheap, legal way to get high. The neighbourhood surrounding the dispensary has also declined considerably since it opened a few years back because of all the riff raff going in and out of the place each day. Oh, and the place has been robbed several times over the last 4-6 months or so because of the large amounts of cash they keep on hand, as have the liquor store and the veterinary clinic next door and the Mexican restaurant across the street.
I've nothing against medical marijuana...I do believe cannabis has been proven effective against several diseases. But it's best saved for the people who actually need it and not wasted on mopes who want to sit and smoke weed all day instead of work.
Mable, I have smoked all my adult life. I was the single mother of 2 and received not a single penny child support. However, I worked 60 or 70 plus hour weeks, EVERY week, EVERY year for 19 years, in a very hard physical labor job in a supervisory position, having as many as 70 employs under my supervision.
A job that required extreme attention, super fast derision making and federally required and reviewed documentation. Never once in all that time did myself or any of my crew members have, or cause an accident of any kind. Granted I NEVER EVER smoked at work, but I was, quite apparently, NOT lazy or stupid because of my after work smoking. I never took a single penny of welfare money, but I always pay my taxes.
I have no idea if your life was easy or hard. I have no idea if you take Prozac, or any prescription drugs or not, etc.. but the stress and anxiety of a life like mine left me just a couple choices. From just looking at me, you could never tell that I have cartilage disease, and hardly have any cartilage left below my waist. You also wouldn't know that just five months ago I was struggling from the after effects of a morbid medication, that nearly killed me.
After having my life nearly destroyed by a drunk driver who ran a red light while I was walking across the street; I finally agreed to take a mood stabilizer to help me manage wild bipolar mood swings that had surfaced from pressures relating to the accident. I couldn't afford cannabis anymore, which I had been unknowingly self-medicating myself with; very effectively I might add, and I had finally agreed to take Lamictal after months of saying no to the medication, despite having it pushed on me from the dr.
Within two months I was completely senile. I am not exaggerating. I would get lost in my own studio apartment. My doctor said that he doubted this was from the medication, and he would not take me off of it. Instead he sent me for MRI's to look for brain issues. He was very arrogant, and young. He couldn't stand it, that I had been uncomfortable about these types of medications, and was actually right for being so. Finally I put the right combination of words together in Google, and I found testimony from other users of Lamictal online, and sure enough, people had completely lost their minds from this "safe" behavioral medication.
I stopped taking the medication, and went through the most terrifying withdrawal you could imagine. And I had withdrawn from pain medication several times... this was pure hell comparatively. It was if my depression had become personified, and was a dark shadow watching my every move. The air was devoid of life.
A few weeks later, I came out of this confusing fog, just long enough to jump in my car, and drive from NYC to LA.
I would never let something like that happen to me again. I would take my care into my own hands, instead of the under qualified drug pushing psychologist, that had nearly finished me off with his big pharma influenced treatment plan, Cannabis is incredibly effective for my bipolar, and the State of California recognized my right to chose my care, and even grow my medicine. Two decades in NYC, were all over. My mental and physical health care, had become the most important things in my life. It wasn't what I had planned for my life at this age, but you have to roll with it, if you hope to keep your head above water in the US today.
Two days after I arrived in sunny LA, I got a call. My older sister had committed suicide. She had gone to the ER for help, but her doctor didn't understand what exactly was happening. She needed her medication, the medication that he had prescribed to her, and she had accidentally misplaced a few days earlier. She was of course a little worried, but she took the right measures to get the medication before you began experiencing withdrawal.
I don't know why this medication wasn't found for her immediately, or why the doctors/hospital didn't understand that she had come to the ER for help, just like the commercials tell you to do, if you start having suicidal thoughts from taking, or not taking a behavioral medication.
She walked out of the hospital, directly across the street, to the top of a parking garage, and she jumped off.
I was/am devastated. And what was this drug that drove her straight into madness? Yep, you guessed it. That same safe and secure drug that had be prescribed to me. LAMICTAL. I couldn't save her, I was still trying to save myself, and hadn't thought to call her about it yet. Now I live with horrible regret... all because of this horrible medication that didn't have enough testing, and is being prescribed off-label without authorization.

I believe you would take a look at me, and come to many conclusions about me without knowing a thing about me, or my experiences. Perhaps you would think I was in great shape, and not in need of cannabis, when in fact, I suffer through so much pain, I could get heroin if it was legally prescribed.
That's a painful story for me to tell. I hope it wakes you up to the fact that you don't really know what you're talking about, and that judging books by their covers, is no way to look at the world compassionately. Study: Crime rose in LA near closed pot clinics
"If medical marijuana dispensaries are causing crime, then there should be a drop in crime when they close," said Mireille Jacobson, a RAND senior economist and the study's lead author. "Individual dispensaries may attract crime or create a neighborhood nuisance, but we found no evidence that medical marijuana dispensaries in general cause crime to rise."
Crime was among the concerns that prompted the City Council to pass the ordinance that put strict guidelines on the pot clinics and forced many of them to close. Law enforcement authorities have long argued collectives attract crime because they often handle large amounts of cash and thieves can resell marijuana.
Two workers at different dispensaries were killed during robberies in June 2010.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca went one step further last September when he said nearly all dispensaries operate as criminal enterprises, a claim that infuriated medical marijuana supporters who have said law enforcement officials have resorted to scare tactics to advance their agenda.
"They have perpetuated this myth that there is more crime associated with collectives," said James Shaw of the Union of Medical Marijuana Patients, an advocacy group for medicinal marijuana users. "This council should be emboldened to revise the ordinance so it's not so draconian to the patients and their associations."

I know many pot smokers that have a "recommendation" who are not sick at all they just don't want to get in trouble as a recreational drug user. If I were truly sick and needed marijuana I would be really pissed off at all these losers pushing legalization on my back and ruining it for the sick. If the dispensary owners didn't overdo it, making a ton of money and opening wherever they wanted to then noone would have said anything. Okay, I am a registered Republican and if you read my past posts I am all in favor of legalizing mj. While not a user myself, I would give about anything to be able to legally help my 82 year old mother relieve her arthritis pain. I have another relative living in WA state who uses for severe stomach problems.
I think you are off base here. I live in a very conservative town in a mostly conservative state, and personally do not know anyone who at the very least is not in favor of mmj. Most of my acquaintances favor full legalization.

The late William F Buckley, a conservative Republican, was one of the first people to come out publicly for legalization. There are several prominent Republicans who support decriminalization or legalization, particularly for medical reasons. Unfortunately, none of them are running for President except Ron Paul, who isn't going to win the nominiation. I suspect tea party types could be persuaded though because they do tend to believe the government should leave you alone. They could certainly be persuaded more easily than anti-pot liberals, who think the purpose of government is to take care of you for life.

I'm all for ending the bogus "war on drugs", but in reality, the amount of taxes collected will not be that great because this plant is too easy to grow yourself, and needs no additional processing.
It's easy to grow your own tomatoes and even brew your own beer, too, but most of us still buy it at the supermarket. People are lazy.
There's a reason pot was called weed, it is essentially a weed and will grow like a weed. It doesn't need special soil, fertilizers, etc. all it needs is some water, sun and dirt. That is why the government doesn't like it. It doesn't have to be distilled or processed, you can grow it in a flower pot and it's really hard to tax a potted plant.
Mygirl1, You have some great ideas and comments, and I always like to hear what you have to say, but I am sorry; medical quality cannabis is not "easy" to grow. In fact, you really need well filtered or reverse osmosis water, you need highly specialized fertilizers since Cannabis is an oil producing plant, it uses up a large amount of vastly varied nutrients and macro nutrients and lots of light! Since outdoor grown cannabis is generally not considered to be medical quality, a large amount of high pressure sodium grow lights are needed to produce top quality medical cannabis.
Then there is the skill involved. Medical cannabis growers are considered to be the most technologically advanced farmers of the age, and very few of them actually use soil to grow. They use either a hydroponic systems or some kind of alternative medium superior to soil, and allowing the grower much more control. Soil is slow, and basically a giant buffer. Hydroponics allows the grower to be in complete control of everything the plant is receiving, instead of being a slave to mother nature.
Can you plug a seed into the dirt and just let it go, yet still get some decent flowers? Sure, but could you offer up those flowers to a medical patient? No. Medical patients want the very best, and hydroponics is the way to achieve that product. Since the standard for quality is so high with medicinal crops, the farmer has little choice but to produce the best quality, using similar techniques, if he hopes to thrive in the market.
If it was so easy to grow, it would be a lot cheaper, and everyone would be doing it. An ounce of medical cannabis easily fetches 300-400. Just do a little Goggle research and I think you will be really surprised at how much work goes into producing a quality product.
All of that said, You are 100% correct about why the government and big pharm, don't like it. It may be difficult to grow properly, but not impossible. And with a little work and time, and individual, can produce enough high quality cannabis for their own personal treatment. Then their medical care is in their own hands, and not taxable. Big corporations and the government, both are naturally opposed to this.
To me, this move really personifies the problem with Washington. The poll numbers in favor of medical cannabis are impressive. At least 70% of the population favors it, and it crosses party lines more than people think. Yet still, most politicians treat the subject as if it's a joke, and to back out of your word to states, patients, businesses and the American public in general, over a subject linked so closely to health care, and employment, is a serious sign that our leaders are completely clueless.
Obama has made this very personal now. I have supported him through some tough times, mainly because of his pragmatic approach to the issues. However, with all of the bending over to Republicans, his inability to shut down the war machine, and now this... maybe it's time to say goodbye. I feel like the problems over the past three years can be mostly blamed on the extremists in congress, and the thievery of Corporate America, but I am also tired of the ineffectiveness and lack of leadership from the Obama administration, and this might be the final straw for me. Maybe Americans Elect can find a candidate worthy of taking on this mess.
Jeigh: When I talk about growing pot, you have to remember I'm a product of the sixties. Back then there wasn't the science that has gone into growing pot these days. You stuck a seed or two in a flower pot, stuck it in the sun, watered and you had some decent product that didn't cost a thing. I have known people who are into the science of it now, they go through all the machinations that you refer of and the product is far superior to what I knew in the sixties. That said, the dirt weed still does the trick, and can be used as a sophorific and analgesic.
This isn't and shouldn't be complicated. My point is that people have used the unhybridized plant for centuries for medical purposes. As to the medical marijuana, that got going not for medicinal purposes but rather, to enhance the THC. Some of the hydroponic stuff is nearly hallucinogenic. I wasn't looking to hallucinate back then, I just wanted to 'tune in, turn on and drop out' for a little while.
I garden, I know that you can make it into a science and go through all kinds of products and setups to enhance plant growth. I just want to have food for the table, I'm not looking to spend my life researching the best way to fertilize, etc.

I'm a fiscal conservative who is more for the original teaparty before it got co-opted by the Conservative Christian group. I am also a capitalist with a small c. I think what is needed is to stop pigeonholing people, liberal vs conservative etc. Free thinkers need to be in the majority, by free thinkers I mean people who look at all sides of the issues and come to their own conclusions after doing the research. I think we have been manipulated by masters for waaay too long.
As to a candidate, right now, crazy old coot is getting my attention. He has stuck to his guns for 25 years and is spot on about the Federal Reserve. He is also spot on about legalizing pot, getting out of the wars and reducing the size and scope of the federal government. Some of his other stances don't sit well, I'm pro-choice and remember the horrors of the pre-Roe v Wade days, and don't want to have to refight that particular battle again.
I guess that, as usual, we will have to chose between the lesser of two evils which is extraordianarily annoying. What presents itself as a candidate often reminds me of closing time at the local bar.

Our Federal Government has taken another step toward the goal of a totalitarian government. The incredibly intrusive meddling controlling nature of the Federal Government is not what our government was ever meant to be. I really believe this is becoming a dangerous slope these people in power are approaching with the "average citizen" being the least represented citizens in the system that has evolved through illegal manipulation just plain corrupt politicians. This is definitely NOT the country I was born in back in the early Fifties where the people were represented and our well being was a genuine concern of the people that represented us, but that is long gone.
You know, why dont they enforce the laws states are trying to get them to enforce like Immigration rather than enforcing laws on states that have decided to legalize medical marijuana.

Well said. It disgusts me that we'll crack down on the legal pot dispensaries that dispense marijuana that is pure, but we'll fund the Mexican drug cartel who lace their weed with God-knows-what, so they can continue to leave human heads in the street of border towns.
He'll fund the very people we want to get the hell out of our country. Voting is a sham. We can vote til the cows come home and the government will still do what it damn well pleases.
California did not legalize marijuana, it decriminalized for medical use and allowed patients and caregivers to collectivley ban together and grow. We didn't vote to have store fronts selling marijuana for a $60 "donation" and not paying any taxes on that. In San Diego they had a chance for a zoning ordinance and it was not enough. They can still grow it themselves and smoke it, we just don't have to see these stores on every corner. I say go away, move to another state and quit draining our resources.

Why wait 45 days? Attempt to shut them down tomorrow. Hopefully that would help ignite medicinal and non medicinal pot smokers which in turn, if we are really fortunate, would spark a fire in any recreational drug user of any substance to get off their asses and maybe take action.
Timing is everything they say. With the protest on Wallstreet presently underway if the millions and millions of people that like to get high begin to protest as well, maybe the blinders would be lifted from the eyes of society that our leaders have attempted to and suceeeded in brainwashing for over 40 years, might decide to reclaim the freedoms our forefathers intended us to have!!!

Yanno I love it when people say that you shouldn't judge other people. See to me that's a crazy statement. I strongly agree with judging others but only if their are facts available and used when judging.

Two crimes:
1.Felony Possession of methamphetamine : amount - .01 corner of sandwich bag with residue.
2. Misdameanor Petit Theft: You home is broken into, stolen were a digital camera and purple heart service metal given to you by your loving now dead father.
How is it they even dared to call any type of theft however small the monetary value petite or petty theft? Also could you rationalize the thief being more socially acceptable actually getting away with robbing maybe 5 or 6 houses or persons before receiving equal punishment as the drug user.
