The police really seem to be trying to incite violence. Earlier in the week Officers from the NYPD attacked a peaceful crowd with pepper spray and billy clubs. Now today they blocked off both ends of the bridge to try and incite a response, when the response they wanted did not happen they moved in anyhow and grabbed those they saw as leaders.
This is frightening and anyone supporting these kinds of police actions against peaceful protesters is nothing more than a Fascist.

I am one among many who applaud these people for bringing attention to a devastating problem in this country--corporate power, corporate financed politicians that are obliterating democracy. Every person who works for a living has seen their quality of life erode due to stagnant wages, unemployment, depressed house values, and unabated rising costs for necessities of survival. Elected officials won't even speak to citizens these days for fear of being questioned about their policies and their donors. Even though we pay their salaries and benefits, they want to now charge people to talk to them.

It will be interesting if Marines in uniform show up, considering they can be kicked out of the military with a dishonorable discharge for taking part in any political action in Uniform. The uniform is not to be used as political leverage. When I was in it was written in the rules that we learn when we go through basic training. I was not allowed to show support for any political movement or candidate in uniform or as a member of the military. Yes, I can do it as a civilian, but was not allowed to use my position in the military nor uniform to advance a political position. This is why actually all the gays coming out of the closet on You Tube and the like in military uniform after the repeal of DADT could end up having a significant fall out as they used their position in the military to promote a political position.

Can you please spell out the "crimes" of Wall Street? They didn't want to make non-conforming (high-risk) loans, but were compelled to by the CRA, a bill signed by Carter and amended by Clinton. Despite the warnings of the organization of CFOs that fair-value accounting would cause financial institutions to lose billions in value at the first downturn, the SEC imposed fair-value accounting. Do you know the only other time the US used that accounting style was 1930 to 1938 when they admitted it was a disaster. Then we got it again in 2007. Gee, what happened then? Not all banks were well managed, but the big collapse was a perfect storm created primarily by ill-advised legislation and disastrous regulation. Let's try to make sure those things don't happen again and repeal some of the rules that led to this mess. Get rid of Fannie & Freddie which are not wall street banks but gov't entities. Their managers are the only ones who have definitely been found to be guilty of cooking the books to increase their bonuses. Franklin Raines was never jailed, and has become an adviser to Obama. You need to look a little deeper before you scream to blame someone.

I am fully aware of what led the banks to do this as far as the government making it possible for anyone and everyone to buy a home, but the banks took it a little too far when they deceived other banks and countries to buy up some of the bad loans.
The protesters also are asking to reform the baking laws so this can never happen again. What I am wondering is why does it take a protest to change things for the better for the people in this country? Maybe because corporations are running our government?

Well, they're protesting....everything. Seems there is no cohesion, rather like the protests when the World Bank or IMF have their conferences and anyone with an ax to grind shows up. In Europe they have the Clown Army and several other 'theme' protest groups, one is for being vegan, another is anti-capitalist another wants to save the earth, all a hodge-podge. If there was a single coherent voice, a single theme then they would get far more attention.

If these malcontents get sheepish enough under an emerged leader with a dynamic personality, they could, in the long term, find themselves involved in something that is a radical departure from what they had originally intended.
500+ protesters arrested, earlier this week many clubbed and pepper sprayed. I'm sure that no bankers or Wall Street brokers, that nearly brought our economy down were clubbed or pepper sprayed, and I'm not aware of any that have been arrested (to the best of my knowledge). Ironic isn't it? Nearly bring our economy down, we still haven't recovered, and you get a golden parachute. Assemble lawfully, go to jail.

This should dispel the thoughts other countries may have about all Americans being greedy money mongering capitalist pigs. I agree with what they are saying, but question their methods. I'm not sure exactly what they are trying to accomplish.
If they want legislation to better regulate corporations-their efforts would be better spent visiting their legislators. If they want to change the mind of people who do not agree with them, they should look into better ways of marketing their message. The awareness they are raising does not seem to be positive.

How does the CRA compel an institution to make high risk loans. The CRA Carter version simplly stopped redlining and led to 100s of billions in urban development and regentrification in cities throughout the nation especially those affected most by urban rioting in the late 60s. Read section 802 of the CRA stating that lenders cannot discriminate against credit worthy applicants in keeping with sound banking policy. The CRA was amended 3 times under Reagan and Bush I it was also amended three times under Clinton and 3 again under Bush II. Any institution which did wish to be part of the FDIC or borrow from the Fed could do whatever the hell they wanted.
The CRA NEVER recquired lenders to issue ARMs and Balloons, Negatively Amortized loans, 110% financing, they never compelled bundling of mortgages nor the continual resale of mortgages. Further do you recognize Grahm, Leach or Bliley whose price was the last Clinton revision it was deregulation under every president since Carter and the CRA has been a convienient whipping boy for the Right to blame the ills of the world on the sole piece of legislation aimed at minorities just an updated version of the Black Guy did it. The city I live, roads closed on special events all the time despite most if not all of the time I don't feel like it has anything to do with me. When it involves that amount of people, bringing up law this law that is imo pain stupid.

There is a big difference between having a couple of roads closed because of a special event and having it closed down because of a bunch of protestors.
First off, when a road is closed because of a special event, there are other routes that are marked off so traffic does not wind up getting thoroughly backed up or congested. Also, police, firefighters and other emergency services are warned well ahead of time so they can plan multiple alternate routes around that area so they do not get delayed.
In the case of the protestors, they blocked the Brooklyn bridge, which is not just any old road, but is a MAJOR artery onto Manhatten Island. Blocking a major road like that causes massive traffic buildup. This is dangerous for many reasons, not the least of which is it can cause serious delays for emergency vehicles.
So, while you may think that bringing up the law is stupid, its even more stupid that protestors think they have a right to do this kind of thing. Sorry, but nobody has the right to block traffic just because they are trying to make a political or idealogical point.
Stay out of the road. That's why they invented sidewalks.

Rocketdan - Your points are valid but what you are missing is the need to reign in corporate managers who are rewarded for selling a company that eliminates jobs, reduce industry competition. These managers earn millions in bonuses while hundreds and sometimes thousands of jobs are lost. We now have a populace who is unemployed and due to the reduced competitiveness of the industry they are paying a whole lot more percentage of income for their basic needs. Take the oil/gas business as an example. Wall Streets rules regarding futures is reaking havok with commodity prices. In addition, we have the price of gasoline rising and this is strictly due to the fact that about 90 percent of the refineries are owned by five major oil companies. Congress has allowed them to buy out the small suppliers who at least had some impact to offset the unjustifiable price increases of gas and heating fuel. For obvious reasons, increases in fuel prices effect the middle class a whole lot more than the affluent and this fact has the middle class of this country with less money to spend on non-essentials. Is this good for our economy, H*LL No! Should there be a few in a position to be able to control price? Don't say this isn't true, just look at the gas pump prices today

Our country's freedom from a monarchy started with a protest, and that protest was actually one of destruction. Entire shipments of tea were destroyed to protest taxation without representation. These people are just marching and using their words to protest. Don't complain about them disturbing you when they are actually exercising a right guaranteed them in the Constitution by our forefathers, not because of an addendum from some later date.

Remedies....should include banks freely able to deny loans, not forced into ARM loans or other loans. Yes they were forced, if not they were fined.
Look into BoA, and how in some districts they were fined millions if they didnt have the proper 'low income' high risk loans on their books and alot of them.

Some are saying by going in the streets they are violating their right to protest. I guess Rosa Parks, a black woman from Montgomery Alabama should not have sat in the whites only section at the front of the bus to protest her right to sit on a public bus anywhere she wanted. I guess some think that change can only come from obeying the laws of the country who tell them they can only peacefully protest on a side walk in a certain area. Sometimes in order to have change, you have to break laws to do it. Can't have a birth without the pain, gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet, etc. If Rosa didn't have the courage to sit in the whites only section, then blacks today may have been still sitting in the back of the bus. Sometimes the only way to change a law or a way of life is to openly defy that law or way of life.

See, my problem about these people wanting change is that they seem to be promoting a change away from being free and making choices. The change they seem to advocate is more like Communism except maybe even worse. They want to go to school but don't want to pay for it. They want a home but don't want to pay for it. They want electricity but don't want the bill. That to me isn't the kind of change I think would be good for this country.
It's more like they don't want to change... into being an adult. It seems they want to go and do adult like things without having to pay the price of being an adult. So, arrest the squatters, force them to clean up where they have been living, and pay restitution for any damage they cause. Once that is done then send them all back to their parents house and tell the parents they don't get out of doing their job that easily.
Parents need to raise future adults not children.

There's a group of 700 people protesting in a city of 8 million. Most of these folks are being subsidized by the government because they are not working. Rather than try to find work or create their own job, they are looking to take from those who are working or are employers. One of the people there actually quit his job so he could join the protest because he felt that there weren't enough jobs. The article specifically mentions one woman that recently graduated from college. She borrowed over $100,000 to pay for her education and she can't get a job. It's all the fault of the weathly! There's no way that the college that has told her that she needs to spend $100,000 to learn what high school graduates had to learn 30 years ago has anything to do with her being $100,000 in debt at the start of her career. Another government managed program designed to place a large burden on an individual to "help" them get where they want to be. Let's look at why she borrowed $100,000 and gave it to a college - so that she would not have to do any hard work and at the same time she could become rich by having others working for her. Now she's out protesting against those that have done the same thing that she was trying to do because it didn't work out the way she wanted.
What exactly is the purpose of their protest? To overthrow the government because they don't like the idea of individuality, personal responsibility, and personal reward? They want the government and Wall Street to give them everything they want with no effort on their part? How dare someone be successful while they are struggling!
Let's get real. We've had 6 years of Democratic control of at least 2 out of 3 components of our federal law system. We've mortgaged our country to the hilt during this time while at the same time promoting an agenda that was designed to give money to support "Green" things - many of which are not environmentally friendly at all. At the same time, we are regulating many businesses either out of the country or out of existance. If we keep doing this there will be no jobs here in America. Sorry, peaceful protest does not include detaining other people, which is what this group did by blocking off the bridge. They were lucky that the protest did not become violent. There's worse things that can happen than being arrested.

Actually I think they want their government to to change the tariff laws so that jobs don't constantly go overseas. I think they want the government to stop taking away from colleges but actually help colleges. Guess your not aware of the amount of schools closing down all over the place because they have no money to stay open. People can't get the education like they used to and now are not qualified to do some of the higher paying jobs. Hence companies have been hiring from oversees. Getting the Government to stop all the wars would be a great asset to our economy. I can go on and on and on, but you can begin to see why people are upset at the government they hired on their behalf. Unlike an attorney or a bank, you can't just fire them. You have to wait until the time to vote in a new representative comes along. So you want to know what exactly is the purpose of their protest. It's the same purpose of all protests, to get the word out that they are unhappy with the government they elected to do a job on their behalf. Same government that reduced our credit rating, because they couldn't get their act together and negotiate in good faith with the other party. And yes, peaceful protests sometimes do mean making someone Else's life uncomfortable. Like Rosa Parks who held up a bus for hours until she was arrested. Because of what she did, blacks can ride anywhere on the bus and more. Sorry you can't get to your starbucks for your cup of java in a timely manner because of these pesky protesters that are putting everything on the line to try and make life better for you.

The people who are complaining about these protesters are the reason these protesters are out there. Their lives are good, they, luckily have managed to keep their jobs, rather than having them outsourced to another country or just vanished when the small business they work for was shut down by the big business down the road. Their families have a home that is not foreclosed due to the loss of a job and plenty of food to eat, so they are contented. They don't care that their neighbor lost his job that he'd had for 20 years and is now losing a home he's paid for for 18 years and his children have barely enough food to eat. They don't care that the elderly man down the road had his power shut off in the middle of winter because he couldn't afford the bill (he was a veteran by the way) and froze to death in the middle of the night.(The electric company did express some sort of vague "not our fault but sorry" statement afterward- so we should forgive them, right?) They don't care because, unlike them, these people are losers who can't manage their own lives. But the moment it happens to them they will be the first ones screaming about the injustice. When they've been looking for a job for a year and can't find one that pays more than minimum wage they'll be taking the government handouts they so disdain others taking. They'll be screaming "why does someone in Europe have my job now?" "why are you taking my house away? I paid my mortage for 20 years and wasn't late once! How can you put my family out in the street?"
There is no one clear message involved in this protest because they are protesting the state of our country and government's involvement in it. There is more than one particular problem that needs to be addressed. Sitting around and bitching about it in our living rooms, even in the general assembly rooms, has done nothing to change it. History has proven that when a government no longer works for it's people, the only way people can regain power is to fight for it. These people are fighting for what they believe in. It's their right as an American to do so, read the constitution. If you don't like it, perhaps you should go live under a dictatorship.

I love how many assume that I am one of the "fat cats" just defending the system. I'm not. I believe in the gold standard and support abolishing the fed completely. I also am NOT rich in money. What little I have (a 1,100 sq ft 50 year old house, two 8 year old cars and so on) I worked hard for, many times at two jobs, and paid for. No one helped me and I didn't ask for help. I figured if I wanted something I could do whatever it took to earn it. I'm 65 now. I work part time and enjoy what I have been able to do in life. I have an RV (15 years old) and do a little camping. I tend my lawn and property (1/4 acre) and try to live within my means. I don't expect the government or the taxpayers to support me or create an artificial lifestyle for me. Yesterday I had to call a plumber. It cost me $165 to have the drain cleaned. That means no dinner out this week and probably leftovers two nights. Am I upset? Not really. I could have saved more when I was younger. I chose not to. Did I expect the government to fix the problem? Probably have a long wait for that. I took PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for my life years ago and did what I needed to to be able to enjoy it now. Do I get angry when people using EBT cards (food stamps) buy the best steak and I get hamburg? Or when they use the EBT for a fully prepared and cooked pizza at the local convenience store? You bet I do. And I have been very vocal about it a few times. I work, I save and I take responsibility for myself and along come these "the government owes me" slime balls just squandering Americans hard earned tax dollars without a care in the world. Wall street isn't perfect but it seems to be no worse then many "I want it all now - free" Americans. You want to change it? Fine! Obama was elected against great odds so the vote obviously does work. Elect the right people, pass the correct laws and go from there. But to protest without a clear set of goals along with the means to achieve them serves no purpose. Figure out how to better the system before you scrap it and end up worse off.

Both the boston tea partiers and the honorable Ms parks focused their protests directly and clearly to the subject at hand. Tea taxes and bus rider discrimination, respectively.
Just what does interferring with transportation across the NY bridge (or any bridge) have tyo do with wall st or corporations.

I once visited my hometown in western new york and went into a K-mart out in the suburbs. They had something there that caught my attention. I returned to my parents house to think about it and latter went to a K-mart located in not such a nice part of town to buy it. The price was higher than the suburban store. I asked a clerk why the big difference, and her reply was that that particular store had a higher incidence (risk) of theft than the outlying store.

Yes, the terms Republic and Democracy are not synonyms. A republic is a political unit governed by a charter, a democracy is a form of government whose prevailing force is the majority of the populace. As for what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they created the Electoral College, I suspect they were not too impressed with the intellect or wisdom of their fellow Americans. IMHO, the EC is a concept whose sell by date is long gone.
Just curious I have noticed a large number of these protesters are college students who are having difficulty paying student loans, and having seen some of these amounts i cant understand why so much, universities or most of them don't contribute there fair share they don't pay taxes, they cost the community $$$ and they rake in the big bucks maybe some of these protestors should be protesting the real problem like who they are really enslaved to. wall street is not the only crook on the block. universities are sucking up money faster than it can be printed, and enjoying more tax brakes than corporations do, if you can't afford college than maybe you should not go untill you have the money, poor economic planing on the students part, also I think pay as you go will improve the education and lower the fees. as the universities will be working harder to fill their campuses. credit is just a bad thing it turns people into slaves, when you borrow money you are selling your self.

You make some good points in your post, but these days I really don't see how anyone other than the children of the exceedingly wealthy can afford to go to college without going into extreme debt. When I was in college (1968-1972) I was paying less than $800 per year in tuition. My entire 4 years of college cost me less than $10,000. Today, the cost of tuition at the big universities like Harvard is over $42,200 per year. Stanford charges over $13,000 per quarter. That would be about $52,000 per year. Granted that these are top of the line universities, but even at schools with lesser reputations, the tuition these days is outrageous. So your point about universities and colleges charging too much is well taken.

Because most of the Universities, Colleges, etc. are part of the State. And since most of these Students do not pay Property Taxes (own a home, own a business, etc.) they would be shooting themselves in the foot (biting the hand that feeds them).
The cost of higher education, and the burden that student loans represent on our young need to be addressed and corrected. The median household income in the USA is $50K a year, which means that most American families are struggling to make ends meet and can not afford to pay the exhorbitant cost of tuition, fees, book and, Heavens forbid, room and board. Yes, the cost of community colleges and some state universities are much lower than those charged by Ivy League universities but even those are out of reach for many families and require getting in debt at a time when many college graduates can only find a part time job making $8 an hour at a retail or grocery store.
A lot of these protesters that are college students have finally learned that they are deep in debt for life and owned by pour government now. They feel for that student loan trap that traps people forever into debt and to government that will own you until it's paid back in full.
Maybe they should ask all their religious churches to bail them out with all the billions they rake in each and every year, but I doubt any church or religion actually gives a damn about these people.

For all of those who don't understand what is being protested, and insist that Wall Street did nothing to deserve to be protested, watch a film called "Inside Job". That will inform you about what these people are objecting to.
And those who are claiming the Unions and George Soros are organizing this protest, the protest has been going on for over two weeks now, and the Unions and progressive organizations are only now becoming involved. The answers to all these allegations are available if you just take the time to do a little research.

Excellent post as I see it the only economic unit of value is your body and mind. This it that is all you have to offer and they can't churn out Billions without YOU. The guess is how cheap can they acquire you lone unit of value i.e. your labor.
You beautiful prose has profound inferences to how "the system" works to extract your very being your person and give in return to you as little as possible and the amount of profit is instatiable by those that seek to be an entrepreneur or rather small business of course the mega global corporate conglomerate that owes you no duty you are only a hired hand. I only read it once and will go back and even save it Mr. McMurtry penned a bittersweet picture of what was once the promise for the American people and what has come to pass. Reality stark grim reality.
I was interested in the images of the great depression and the music of the Era when I came across this time montage and it has scenes of which I was a witness to and the idea that we have begun to slip backwards. The vid has photos and images of a much different time I see my childhood and I would suppose many other Americans in the moving images and photos and of course the hard economic times and it seems,.We cannot ignore pending ill winds, that we may return to the bread lines if they really do away with food stamps and unemployment - if so what is there left to do?

We need those hundreds of Billions and hundreds of hundreds of Billions to stay in America put to use to capitalize new start up businesses here in America get America back to work and finally reform Wall Street, make the acceptance of money by a candidate a crime, 10 year ban for any staffer or congressman or woman to lobby congress and put back the money stolen from "The citizens voluntary retirement contributory fund" immediately and that includes Medicare which money I paid into my entire life those are not entitlements as food stamps or welfare that is the money of the American people plain and simple no amount of smoke and mirrors can hide the fact that I have had taken out of my paycheck all my life monies to afford me this care when I retire these money is not an entitlement but a long, long term investment as part of my retirement plan a bi-lateral contract. When anyone says your Social Security is an entitlement you are being lied to I would even say a unabashed flagrant lie, even crimianl.
I have my friend David to thank for starting me on this path but I took a detour and yes thanks to him have seen a different pattern of consolidation of power and wealth since 1980 and the consequential control of the government of the United States I would not have believed it but research the G-20, G-8, IMF, The World Bank, The FED, Rigged trade we tariff China .25 cents per dollar and they to us $25, other rigged trade, NATO contracts to repair the wreckage we spew all over mast amounts of land and the well over 100,500 deaths...one hundred thousand civilians lives taken...some estimates hold to a 600,00 death total due to America putting the Kabash to some terrorists and a whole mass of civilians. Who is paying for all the build up of infrastruture? Who gets all of tax dollars? Could be use some of the Billions here?

I suppose you missed out on the video sent out all over the world as of this moment with 700 under arrest and who knows what has transpired in each and every case. The "Freedom Video" of Americans of all political persuasion recorded the beat to the ground maybe you missed what the rest of the world was able to watch I even taped it for you.
Relative to these mass arrests of up to 700 or more, I saying hundreds were arrested for standing on a public side walk pulled without this time bashing heads into the front grill of parked cars, macing young girls penned in by some reddish net no threat to anyone and being maced as is on video, then I do not have video of he current arrests but as I say a reasonable guess is that possibly hundreds were arrested for standing on a sidewalk and especially if the bystander held a weapon as a video camera that seems to be target number one....Why would a lawful arrest be afraid of video? Why are they so afriad of video? Proctect and Serve - Right?
The police here in Orange California beat to death a 140 pound 5'7" that threatened them with his fists he also was homeless due to mental issues he was beaten to death because remember he posed a mortal threat to 200 LB. plus trained "to serve and protect" policeman as it would have it they beat him to death. The police inquiry found no fault a unfortunate incidence but no fault but the family won an inquest and now two policeman face manslaughter charges - there should be more. Portect and Serve - Right?
My point is the is an effort to brutally beat down the citizenry from coast to coast the police must be feared for when the real tuff times come. Communities living in fear of gangs and policeman relative to where you live. What times are these?

This is why our kids need to learn history. The people during the Revolutionary War didn't get flack. What happened is they were beaten, tarred, whipped, houses burned to the ground, their women raped, and sometimes they would get a quick death. Still, they took a side, put their lives on the line, and were willing to sacrifice everything for what they believed in. Half of the population of the United States was relocated to Britain or one of it's colonies after the Revolutionary War because of their beliefs.
Of course the child whining about how rough it is to go to school and pay back their 130k loan they managed to rack up would be willing to go through all that for their beliefs... (end sarcasm)
I really don't think you should compare a bunch of whiny children to the Revolutionaries or the Federalist who put everything on the line for their beliefs. Not a one of those kids would be there if they were told that their homes would be taken and burned, their livestock butchered (including pets), and one or more of their family members hanged for treason.

Are you saying everyone on food stamps or unemployment are "government owes me" slime balls? This kind of generalization seems unfair. I've seen many people fall on hard times and have to use that help just to stay afloat. Some do take advantage of the system, but you shouldn't condemn everyone because of it.
Also, why do you hate these protests so much? Is it because they have a different opinion on how things work?
I have read a number of the above post I agree with few but there a real difference with this one it is being backed by the Unions which means this is also back by the this so call administration which is backed by all of George Soro's organizations. In other words these are people that want to live off the few of us that pay Taxes, I do not agree with that at all. Just grow up and find a job they are out there if you want one, but from what I see here, is that you would just be fine if you live off the ones that do pay Taxes. This is crazy. Since when were investments a sure bet. Yep, I lost a lot of money in my 401K. Yep, I even lost my job and it took 6 months for me to find another, that I might add I had to move my whole family from 1 state to another, also I am the only wage earner as my wife is a stay at home mom with 3 degrees (Russian Language, Masters in Educational Development, and Vet Tech). Yep my mother In-law is out of work and living with us which probably will not change until she goes to be with the good lord.
This is life and we are in a recession. Time to take in the belts a notch and expect to work a couple hours longer for the same pay. If you own your own business you are probably working 16 to 20 hours a day to keep your business afloat and your employees in a job. I think the least you can ask at that point is for them to give a little more also, times are tough.
Not a single person forced us to invest in stocks or bonds. You could have put your money in a bank account and collected 1 or 2% interest with no real risk. I actually would encourage most people to do that since in all honesty you should never invest in something you don't understand. No one forces you or anyone else to work for a large Corporation, I believe you sent them a resume or something along that line, they made you an offer, and you either accepted it or you didn't work for them. At least that is how my last 4 employers did it.
Wall Street is basically the same as Las Vegas with the exception that you can do your research and if you choose correctly you have a chance of owning a piece of a company that regardless of the value of that company at any given time, the fact remains you own a piece of it.

Tell me something Joe. If people are so tired of corporations buying politicians, how come they don't protest the unions, special interest groups, etc.?? Those organizations spend millions of dollars a year in donations to both political parties. The unions alone donate 10s of millions of dollars a year to the Democrat party, but I don't see anyone protesting them for "buying" politicians.

I may not agree with everything you say but you definitely are correct when it comes to the American public and the way we vote.
Everyone needs to quit voting for the party and start voting according to the politician's who is running record. If he/she didn't vote in a way you agree with on specific items then don't vote him/her back in.. simple.
Heck, just write in who you think could do the job best. We need to dump the electoral college and go by majority. We no longer need the electoral college, since there are computers and voting boothes every where now it would be simple to get the majority vote on most decisions.
I can't understand why the cops don't join the march. The guys they are protecting are the same ones that blew their savings, pensions, want to lay them off, etc. Same for the military. If anyone was thinking straight, virtually everyone that could sqeeze into NYC should be protesting at Wall Street. After all, since Goldman Sachs rules the world, and they don't care if the county fails or succeeds, doesn't that make them all our common enemy?

The financial and corporate institutions these people were protesting against are often multi-nationals owned by foreign and domestic investor with little or no loyalty to the USA and no interest to the plight of the average American. They don't invest in the USA because they are concerned or care for the general welfare of middle class Americans, they invest when there is demand for the goods and services they sell and when there is a high probability of a good ROI.
Solyndra went bust, in part, because of lousy management, but also because the Chinese government invested $30B in solar R&D and, not surprisingly, Chinese makers of solar systems are putting their American and European competitors out of business. Our problem is not that we invested too much in alternative energy sources, but that we did not invest enough to make our companies profitable and able to sell their products at competitive prices.

I do believe that there are a lot of things that need to be changed and one of them happens to be big banking. However I think most are going about it all wrong and then when they start calling for social equality I completely draw the line. When you start taking more from the wealthy just because they are wealthy then what is the point of trying to become wealthy? We are not just talking about billionaires like the President would like you to believe. We are talking households that make over $250,000 a year, that is only $125,000 per spouse. Not the ultra rich like he wants you to believe! Social equality goes against everything this country was built on. Do we need fixes? Absofreakinlutetly. Do we need social equality and a falsely inflated middle class? Hell no.
As far as blaming the President even if he fixed then entire country, you must be an absolute fool. First off, not only did I vote for Obama but I didn't vote for Bush. So not only did I want him to succeed, but I tried to help him get there. Secondly, anybody and I mean anybody who says and I quote, "People have the right of freedom from want" is certifiably nuts in my book.

I agree there are things that need to be fixed but anytime a knee jerk reaction happens it simply doesn't work. I also do not think that social equality is the answer. Yes we need a bigger and better middle class but we don't do that by getting them on the government tit just like the lower class. We all see how well that has been working for the lower class. That is exactly how socialism starts! But don't be fooled either, we do need the upper class. They are the ones for the most part who provide jobs and if we tax the hell out of them, then they are not going to hire. The way to fix this country is to get people back to work. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. However you can't do that at a cost of $5,000,000 a job and you cannot do that by continually raising the debt ceiling.
Solyndra failed because the White House was going to loan them that money come hell or high water. They knew there were problems and that this would be the likely outcome but they did it anyway. We cannot compete right now with the Chinese in manufacturing because their labor costs are way to cheap.

Solyndra did not go bankrupt because the administration was going to lend them money, they went bankrupt because of poor management decisions and, most importantly because they could not compete against Chinese companies selling the same product for a fraction of the cost. That, by the way, is the reason so many U.S. companies are going out of business. They are trying to compete against companies in countries with low labor costs, no safety or environmental regulations, and healthcare paid for by the government which means corporate operating costs are a fraction of what our companies have to bear.
Nobody is proposing to solve our problems, let alone replace our economic model, with one that depends on public funds for long term employment. What is being proposed is to use public funds to put displaced workers, especially those affected by the construction debacle, back to work while at the same time repairing or replacing our infrastructure which, by the way, has been neglected for far too long and if left alone may be another factor for our socio-economic decline. A plan to put people back to work at a time when the private sector is either unwilling or unable to invest and hire is a temporary approach designed to reduce unemployment, the cost of unemployment benefits, increase government revenues, and give the economy the shot in the arm it needs to start moving.
If you ever visit Europe pay attention to the levees in the Netherlands and to the power grids and road in Germany, France and other countries. What people should be complaining about is the total neglect of our infrastructure not the fact that somebody is proposing to improve it.

There needs to be a redistribution because the rich got super greedy and started undermining the middle class, of which there now is none. The financial regulations were the response to the flagrant deception and overcharging of customers - at the corporate level as well as personal.
Wall Street earned the new regulations. The big banks played along. The Investment Banks (thankfully no longer with us) created much of the worthless MSB's sold throughout the world - not just here. The banks made rotten loans, then ripped off depositors and merchants with mountains of fees that were not waranted, credit card rates that in the 1960's would have been punshed as "usery", and when all their sorry deals vaporized, they came to us - the taxpayers for a bailout.
The additional costs regulate an industry that clearly was incompetent or nephariously did not want to regulate itself. I work in banking, and know what has gone on.
The administration did not create the regulations - the Congress elected by the American people did. You, Oskar, are one of those who always tries to turn the conversation to the President - when this was NOT his to control. Are you one of those hired right-wing posters who go out on the threads and plant anti-administration messages all the time? I have caught two already, and they have never responded since.
We had tons of regulations back in the day when out economy was strong, and Wall Street was a responsible party whowas one part of the financial sector - not the tax exempt part....
Time for them to pay up. The consumers will leave the big banks who fee too much. I work for a community bank, and encourage al to consider thta route instead if you see too many new charges on your account. The charges are not the fault of regulations - they are the fault of weak managers who try to get profits from something other than what banks should...
Everyone - check you bank's fee income as a percentage of total income, then compare it to others. All is posted on the regulators' sites, like the OCC or FDIC on the n=bank "Call Reports". This is public information. Check it out. Learn about the management style of your financila institution, and support banks that have a "clean" business model. Don't let then smooth talk you into believeing that it is regulations causing their fees. Check senior management salaries, investment banker wages & bonuses, and benefits and shareholder dividends...There could be a lot fewer fees for consumers if these were cut in half.

The protesters are nurses, fireman, policeman and many other professions. I think Wall Street needs to pay back the "Bail out" money, everyone of these protesters paid with their taxes. Plus every tax paying American is owed the money Wall Street used to give their CEOs millions in bonuses.
As a nurse, of over years, I never made a million dollars combined! I have saved lives and gave quality, compassionate care, to my patients. I have worked with doctors who have also worked to save people lives and yet not one of them was ever given a bonus of a million dollars. Society has a peculiar way of rewarding those who have done nothing more than steal from the American worker. Athletes and actors are given millions because of a skill that may possess. While there a millions of working people who merit a bonus for the dedicated work they preform every day.
So to all the "Davids" in this world, I hope one day, you will be in need, of a group of protesters, to fight for a cause, for some injustice you believe in. I am willing to bet, people will show up to help you. You see David, real Americans believe in helping one another.

I say, the right to freedom of speech stops, and absolutely so, at the point of causing a public nuisance and/or difficulty in conducting lawful commerce. IMO, NOTHING is excessive in dealing with disruptive civil disobedience. The prime reason the government should exist is to protect private property and the right to conduct lawful commerce, free from the nihilistic actions of others unlawfully causing a nuisance by loitering and blocking traffic.
You don't see what happened to create the action, you only see the result of the precipitating action. There is a long history of protesters in Europe, professionals, they know the game, how to play the media and the police. The police, for their part, also know what the game is and so what you watch is theater.

Many people hold certain beliefs (i.e. ideology, religion, etc.) so strongly they are unable to even consider that they might be wrong. Even in the face of empirical, physical evidence they refuse to question these beliefs. There is a scientific term for this condition. It is called Cognitive Dissonance. From the people that refuse to even look at the evidence that disproves much of the "official" story about what occured on 9/11/01... to those that believe, since Obama is now in charge, the government can do no wrong... you can see this mental defense mechanism has kicked in for many people.

Telco management does not have a clue that print is DEAD - ask any of their advertisers.

The problem with corporate America, is that it has become so big, with so many layers of management and bureaucratic red tape, that no one person feels that “They” are accountable for their immoral or unethical decisions. “Hey, I’m just doing what in the best interest of my corporation. I am doing what “I” have been told.” The whole "system" depersonalizes every decision, until the manager or CEO does not feel personally accountable or responsible for their actions. They are "Off the Hook".

Is this all part of some elaborate plan to transfer wealth and "Home Ownership" to a handful of corporations - or to the US government?
Seems to be going down like this:
1. Give consumers an unrealistic credit card limit, with no way of paying it back.
2. Consumer spends uncontrollably (supporting 2/3 of the economy), bolstering the coffers of major retail chains, developers and financial institutions.
3. Consumer Maxes out credit cards.
4. Consumer is given unregulated home equity loans, using unrealistic home values to buy more stuff and pay down credit card debt.
5. Consumer maxes out credit cards again.
6. Financial institutions end up owning the majority of real property in the United States.
7. Will these banks soon be owned by the US government????????

This thread has been very good reading, especially "Mickey"s posts. I just want to caution against scapegoating large corporations simply for the "sin" of being large. The President likes to do that, and as a result, we are not drilling, irrigating, or doing several things to the extent we could be or should be. We don't need the largest, least efficient corporation of all---the Federal Government---to create "shovel ready jobs"; we need them to just get the hell out of the way.

I'm sure blocking the bridge will end greed. The CEO on his or her way to work is not in the traffic jam, just some poor slob who went out and found a job is now late. Also a march on Wall St should have an impact on the "Patriot Act". Join the real world and get a job.
