So now Pakistan, is working for America and Russia, and gets paid by both countries.

When the US invaded Afghanistan, the Pakistani extremists warn the populace of the imminent invasion of Pakistan by the infidels of the West. Despite the outward appearance of a modern democratic nation, Pakistan is similar to Egypt before its "Arab Spring" in that high ranking military officials govern the country. As American military and political involvement in Pakistani affairs increased, the extremist or nationalist had no problem recruiting membership. From their perspective, America has invaded Pakistan under the pretense of anti-terrorism. In the rear view mirror, even many moderate Pakistani see the past invasion of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan as a preview of the invasion or attempted colonization of their own country by a Western power.

As America abandons Afghanistan, Pakistan's military has secretly enlisted the help of the extremist organization to eradicate any vestige of American rule. The attack and killing of American officials in Pakistan can only increase in the coming months.

It's time we cut off all foreign aid to Pakistan. Why should we continue to support a government which actively supports terrorists who kill our own troops. There is overwhelming evidence that factions within the ISI are supporting the terrorists. We knew full well that some senior people within the ISI were helping bin Laden and we know full well that they are currently helping the Haqqani. We also know that there are elements within the ISI supporting the Taliban and it is even suspected that some within the ISI are actually Taliban themselves. The government in Pakistan is riddled with corruption and many officials care about nothing more than how best to line their own pockets. They are not now, nor will they ever be a true ally. The only reason they are cooperating with us at all is the payoffs we are giving them to secure that cooperation. Even at that, their cooperation has been limited and more passive than active in nature. The Pakistani government does little if anything to reign in terrorist groups operating from within their borders and provides tacit, if not open approval of many of the actions of these terrorists. Only we the terrorists do something within Pakistan that effects Pakistanis does the government show any interest in containing them.

Of course the Afghan government is even more corrupt than the Pakistani government. Bribery, intimidation, assassination, etc. are a way of life to these people. It is time to just pull all of our troops out and write off the region. It does not matter if we leave now, next year, or ten years from now; the minute we leave Afghanistan will collapse into chaos until the Taliban or some other extremist organization can get the upper hand and institute yet another hard line Islamic government that will rule through fear and intimidation. Afghanistan will never succeed as a democracy because the varying factions within the country will never agree to share power with each other. Each faction is intent on total domination and will use whatever methods necessary to eliminate anyone who opposes them. Whichever group can get their hands on the most powerful weapons and recruit the most fanatics to their side will eventually take control and oppress the other groups.

We should pull all of our troop out of the region and make it clear that any attacks against the US or our interests will be met with swift and decisive retribution. No more boots on the ground or trying to take out just the terrorists. If an attack is launched the area the attack originated from will be completely leveled until nothing is left moving in the area. Give the governments the option of controlling the terrorists or face wholesale destruction of any area the terrorists operate from. We should also inform India that should they decide to decisively deal with their Pakistani problem once and for all that the US has no objections.

All specialists, think tanks, policy makers and military planners are slowly going back on what Pakis have been doing. They have come back up to 2007.

I have read a lot of posts on this topic this afternoon, and I have to say yours is the first I have replied to. Why is that? Because what your saying is actually true. After World War II and the surrender of Japan the United States Decreed that it would never again use the force and destruction of an atomic weapon in the face of our enemy. So if that is actually the case, then why has our country since then been building up the arsenals of therm o-nuclear armaments if we are never to use them, so who are they planning on using them on exactly? However, I personally do not agree with mass destruction weapons, why, because its too easy. War is not easy, War has casualties, however War is never won, because there is no winner. Don't people get it??? You cannot have trust between countries with a different form of government, cultures, and religion. Even here in the US the south still doesn't trust the north. when England left India, back in late 1940's, August 15, 1947. It was split into three parts Pakistan, East Pakistan (Bangladesh) and India in the middle. The idea was to separate the major religious factions. Pakistan was Muslims, India remained Hindu and Buddhist, East Pakistan became a separate nation, Bangladesh, in 1971.

Pakistan has been Po-ed ever since the separation. Its like big brother, younger brother fighting over who got the largest piece of cake. No matter how its sliced or who gets to pick first - the younger brother is never going to feel he got his fair share.

If was as simple as bombing, we'd have done it under dubya. 55-70 nukes/nuke cores randomly hidden deep into mountain bunkers. You have to stay involved at some level to have some assurance one of the bombs does not get "lost" to some extremist faction.

Dropping the big one would seem like a good plan but the reality is, you set off even a few big nukes, the whole world suffers in contamination, fallout, etc. The clouds of radioactivity get into the jet stream and they end up back on us eventually.

As you say...there is no oil there, but just happens to be a world top 20 supply of Lithium there: An important element going forward with electric batteries (i.e. vehicles). The US has 6 of the top 20 deposits. It appears to be a somewhat strategic resource worth skirmishing over... We went in to get Al-Qaeda, but somehow "stumbled" into a treasure map along the way...

Well, look: by summer 2012, 33,000 troops will have been removed from Afghanistan. If president Obama is still in the White house, I'm sure he will finish the draw-down by the end of his second term, hopefully much quicker. We're leaving that useless rockpit, assuming a republican doesn't get in and make another fortune selling guns to our own troops like the Bush family did in Iraq.

As bad as it is, the tens of billions spent "managing" Pakistan is a bargain compared to the 5 trillion we'll spend "managing" Iraq and Afghanistan. They don't even have nukes a short overthrow away from the hands of terrorists. We need to keep the Pakis within arms reach. Just enough feet on the ground to keep the right information flowing. I'm not sure how it would play out for our solders in Afghanistan, though, if the Pakistani's just flat opened a second front there because we stop sending money. A little tricky, this situation. If we could just beam our people and equipment back to the states, that would by my best solution.

I remember reading a few years ago that the 3rd or 4th person in that position was killed there. Again. And where was bin Laden discovered? C'mon, Diner... you don't see how we are ALL at risk from the consequences now? Yes - even the people making the decisions... 60 nuke cores, hidden, under fragile control. I hate this sh*t, but this is clearly a case for keeping the fight OFF US soil.

I say we change things and make them "at risk" .

Probably for two reasons:

1. Attacking Pakistan's nuclear arsenal would likely ignite a large scale war in the middle east. After all, we are in fact trying to get the hell out of there right now... not start yet another war (and one that would likely be much worse).

2. We are un-sure of our ability to destroy their entire weapons stockpile in one shot. If we were to attack Pakistan in an attempt to destroy their weapons, and we missed any.... you have to assume the Pakistanis would try to use their remaining weapons against us in one form or another.

There is no easy solution when it comes to Pakistan, mainly because they have nuclear weapons. So sure, it might seem like a great idea to just take those weapons out. However, this isn't a James Bond movie... and doing so with 100% certainty would be almost impossible.

Another reason is China has threatened us if we mess with Pakistan.

And we're afraid of China?

Wouldn't it be better for the allies to just leave Afghanistan? This will bring peace to the whole region! And BTW, it's really slefish to not only nuke Japan twice, keep a stockpile of thousands of nukes and think about de-nuking others!
