I felt it here in the Detroit area. A tremor - but things moved. It took MSN just a few minutes to put their report up - which I was watching for. Having lived in California, it brought back such fond memories. Not.
In Nashville area, I felt nothing but all dogs in the area were howling and my Guard Dog was hiding under the porch howling around the time the quake happened.
you think that was fun? You shoulda been here in the Seattle Wa. area when the 7.0 Nisqually quake hit... that was about 14 times the size of what you got!
I'm glad that everyone seems to have come out of this one ok.
Does anyone know if the quake in Colorado and New Mexico is related to the quake on the east coast? Like I'm just curious from a geological perspective if it's possible for one plate moving to set off other plates?
We felt it here in PA, north of Philly. Holy crap.
Earthquakes aren't that uncommon...remember there was one in VA while I was in college studying for finals...crazy.
I live in an apartment above a 140-year-old horse barn just outside West Chester, PA. Holy smoke! I thought this structure was comin' down. It was three strong jolts in my area. Much stronger in D.C. because it was a shaker. Lived just 12 miles east of CA for 4.5 years, and we got shakers in regular intervals. Not my idea of fun ... hear we could get a some fallout from a hurricane this weekend. Great.
My first Earthquake, building swaying in Virginia Beach, still have goosebumps. That was oddest feeling I have ever had. We are all safe, hope everyone else is also!!
wow, that was strange I had no idea what was happening, so thats what an earthquake feels like? We are expecting a big hurricane here this weekend mother nature should have saved the earthquake for next week.
The problem is 99% of the East coast buildings and infrastructure is not prepared for earthquakes as the West coast is. There is also danger for the Midwest in the Madrid fault area, we have been lucky, but as this proves it can and it will happen.
Ummm well the US is on one plate. but the plates move, so something may have happened at one of the other plates... you should go to the usgs website if you want to know what happened.
Im here at va beach and we def felt it, fun times!! now to look forward to the hurricane this weekend!! yippy!!!!!!
I'm just northeast of Baltimore, was out with the horses and didn't feel a thing. It was felt INSIDE the house though. Said it sounded worse than an off-balanced washing machine.............. Darn........... I'm mad because I missed feeling it!
Take it easy folks, it ain't no BIG thing. But then, we'd probably be all anxious out here in So-CAL if we had a Hurricane. Maybe California isn't going to fall off into the ocean, maybe we'll stay put and the REST of the country will fall off into the ocean?????
I felt it at my desk (Cape Cod) chair rolled back and forth.
Now for all of you Cali folks who are being rude...not cool!! I myself have been through a big one when I was visiting Cali years ago...but the majority of folks out here haven't...and it's quite frightening. So, think before you speak rudely to us East Coasters...and have a heart...or is that just typically lacking in California Folk?
Glad everyone is ok. I live on the west coast and have been in afew quakes ranging from 5.2 to as high as 7.1 ..it can be scary at first. Just move away from things that can fall on you and if you cant then get under something that can protect you and hold on and wait...they dont last long usually...the bigger they are the longer they last. Dont fell bad ...you are usually pretty freaked out after your first quake but you get used to them so dont worry..once you no what to do you can handle them pretty easily. I suggest reading up on them. The more you learn about them the better you can deal with them and their after effects. There are worse things in the world believe me. Take the day off and relax as best you can..the adrenaline can be overwhelming at first. Glad everyone is well.
I'm in Northern Delaware. House started shaking and vibrating, and as I sat at my post, I really wasn't sure whatTF was happening. Went outside, looked around, nothing noticable, went back in, all was already over. Lasted maybe 10 seconds or so.
Karen - Okay, if it's a big one to you it's Okay to be scared. When that Rhode Island sized chunk of granite on the San Andreas just below Big Bear shears and everything west of it moves north in 5 or 10 seconds THAT' when I'll be scared, that'll be the 10.1 quake they're always talking about. These little 5.9 6.0 quakes aren't nothin. But, to each their own. Peace.
JAXX 43 - I don't see anybody out west being rude, I think they are just amused at how something people aren't use to causing so much panic. Like for instance shutting down all three major airports in New York.
It's all relative to where you live and how the buildings are constructed. Those of you in California talking about how it was "only" a 5.9 would be the first begging for government assistance if you had a foot of snow dumped on you.
Huh, previous record of 3.6 earthquake hitting DC was 2010... Obama and Liberal Democrats were in charge then too, maybe God is trying to make a point?
(All you liberals and atheists are probably furious with the mention of God, a reminder that someone greater than you is watching you and holding you accountable!)
Montanaman - Don't try and impress me with how COLD it gets in Montana. Try 126 below with a chill factor of MINUS 280 F., at the South Pole in 1970. Compared to that Montana is a tropical paradise.
"Earthquakes don't scare me. Jesus speaks to me through our planet. Sometimes when I walk on the beach, I fantasize about tsunamis of blood." M. Bachmann
Really!? She fantasizes about tsunamis of blood? And some people want this women to be their President.
I think that is a hoax twitter page. Isn't her name spelled Michele? I don't have a twitter account so I'm unsure how to tell if they are authentic accounts to celebrities and such.
Nobody out here refers to California as Cali, and I don't think we're being rude. Everyone on the East Coast are always taking slams at us hoping we'll fall in the ocean.
Yes we're more used to them. As far as most people not experiencing a big one out here, I think you're incorrect. I was in the Northridge earthquake when buildings collapsed, and in 1969 when the freeways and Oliveview Medical Center came down, and the front of my house moved approximately 2 feet from the main structure.
What surprises me is that everyone reportedly is running outside. You all are supposed to stand in a doorway away from windows, toward an inner part of the building, or under a solid wooden desk. For heaven sakes, don't go outside. You more likely to be hit by something falling on you.
It's all relative to where you live and how the buildings are constructed. Those of you in California talking about how it was "only" a 5.9 would be the first begging for government assistance if you had a foot of snow dumped on you.
I did not say it was only a 5.9 BUT you are extremely correct.
We can not handle snow (it does snow at higher elevations) EXCEPT for me as I was born in the midwest near the Great Lakes and lived most of my life on the east coast.
Okay, and btw. "Where's Perry" today? Wasn't he seen on a rural highway with his secretary and a goofy looking associate when a military transport was stopped by his campaign RV ? And where did his secretary and the goofy looking associate disappear to while he was talking to the military guys about getting out of the way on the bridge ? And wasn't there some kind of missle test taking place today ? It that secretary's name Miss Tesmaker ? ;-D
The Bible tells us that in these lasts days before the Son of God comes again, We will see a lot more earthquakes all over the world even in places that earthquakes haven't really been felt before. They will all start off smaller and then as the time draws nearer and nearer we will see many more with greater intensity until finally the great earthquake that will be felt across the earth.
How often do you hear about an earthquake in colorado, south dakota, virginia or washington, around the east coast or mid-west. Not very often. This is a sign people. I heard that Christians have been preaching that the end will come for the last 2 centuries and the end hasn't arrived. NO ONE will EVER KNOW the day or time of CHRISTS RETURN HOWEVER HE HAS GIVEN US CLEAR SIGNS that THE DAY DRAWS NEAR!!
And all you haters out there that don't like to hear about GOD don't need to comment cause i heard it all. But this is a free country and everyone has a right to their opinion so go ahead and throw the book at me! The TRUTH is that I WILL LOVE ALL OF YOU NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU HATE ME!! Just like GOD loves us all no matter how much you turn your back on HIM. TRUE CHRISTIANS are not HATERS. TRUE Christians might say they hate what you do or what you stand for. THAT IS THEM HATING YOUR SINS, However ask a True christian for forgiveness and they will do just that without question AND THEY WILL LOVE YOU NOT MATTER WHAT!! So go ahead and slander me and call me names and spit on me and murder my character. IN THE END I will still love you as a human being.
Wow, Veteran, you're one of those, huh? Can't let any one else have their own experiences or their own stories, cause you can always top them. I don't mean to be rude, but the folks I've known who do that are real "fun" at parties.
(All you liberals and atheists are probably furious with the mention of God, a reminder that someone greater than you is watching you and holding you accountable!)
First you're assuming that all liberals aren't Christian, which is factually incorrect. Then you assume that atheists would get angry about being reminded of the debatable "fact" that an all-powerful diety is watching over them rather than getting angry about hateful, arrogant, and willfully ignorant people trying to force their hate and ignorance on everyone around them. To you I have this question: U mad?
THERE IT IS! Come on! Let's hear it! Let's hear it! Does somebody want to say something about a Rapture? An Apocalypse maybe? Or how about an Antichrist or two?
To all end of the world nuts out there, I have this to say: The end is NEVER nigh!
Believe me...those of us that dwell on the west coast are not trying to embarrass or laugh you. We are actually trying to make you feel better and give some good advise to help you deal with this. We have all been through it and we totally no how you feel believe me. We are not the shallow, clueless people you think we are.
For all the snarky Californians who think we are all overreacting...you mean like Angelinos when it rains?!? People here are barely blinking about Irene and we've been through a flood or two also, so clam up.
I was having lunch with my family on Brown's Island in the James River in Richmond across from the Federal Reserve when the tremor hit - weird. At first we thought the rumbling was a train, as a trestle crosses the island, but then we began to sway and shortly thereafter people were evacuating the Fed building. Definitely not your average day in Richmond!
When I got home we just had a few paintings askew and some spices toppled over in the pantry. I certainly wouldn't like anything much bigger that this...
Funny thing is I just had a friend try to convince me to move to California and I said no way! To many earthquakes! The ground doesn't move here in Philly!! LOL
Our building was shaking and swaying pretty bad for about 10 seconds! When I realized it wasn't from a big truck driving by or a strong gust of wind blowing on the ceiling because it was getting stronger and not stopping, well let me tell you! I got up and headed for the door like a bat out of hell LOL
California can keep their sunny weather and their earthquakes!! Don't wish to feel anything even remotely like that again!! LOL
Here's a response to some of the comments about California.
1. When it rains here it tends to pour. I'd like to see you drive through 6-8 inches of water on a freeway with thousands of cars around you.
2. People forget that the tallest peak in the contiguous 48 states is in CA. We don't ask for help at a foot of snow, only when we get 6-8 feet from a single storm.
3. I found the east coast concern rather amusing to read but I understand it. Now maybe you'll understand better when you hear about a quake that size in California.
4. My biggest concern was the people evacuating buildings then standing right under several stories of stone fascia and electrical wires. We learn out here to stay inside where we are safe from being crushed or electrocuted
saddened - I just get a little tired of OTHER people and their snide remarks, like for instance if California got a foot of snow we'd all put in for welfare, the Sierras in Northern California got 100 FEET of snow this winter my friend, I didn't even mention THAT did I? Don't be one of THOSE saddened, whatever THOSE is. Anyway you'all have a Nice Day now Heah?????
I felt it here in Colorado too. Oh wait...I guess that was the 5.3 quake that we had here, which nobody is reporting on. You know why? Because minimal damage was done, nobody was hurt and it just wasn't a big F'ing deal.
The next date is sept 25 watch california around that date if the alignment theory is correct. (the prediction is for a very large earth quake 9-12 on RS) the last date was 8/25/11 for an earth quake east coast US. 2 days off. So far the last 6-10 earth quakes have been predicted with socking accuracy. the dates in oct 15- thru nov multiple events. (Somthing about japan being gone and somthing major in Russia.)
I just started following this theory - lets see if it is valid. i gave the date write them down. see what happens
Karen - You are most correct, my first earthquake was the Long Beach quake in 1952, I was 5 years old and still remember it to this day. The first one DOES make a lasting impression. To everybody back east, I hope you all the best and after seeing a few pictures of some of the damage you have my heatrtfelt sympathy. This IS a very interesting vine today and Karen you are also correct that the day of or after an earthquake we talk about it continually for a day or two. You guys all hang in there.
Bonez - We'll see if your predictions can rival Nontradomas(sp). I'll get ahold of you at the end of the month. Have a Nice day.
Carianne, I heard about your quake this morning and it's still being mentioned along with the DC one. Sure, you may not get as much attention as DC but then y'all aren't the center of our Federal gov't. This one also spread through several states.
That aside, neither area is use to quakes so I'm sure it was quite something for everyone.
MMos...I get that it's an unusual occurance and that everyone is talking about it amongst themselves. What I don't understand it why the "DC quake" has been headline news all day. I just went to our local paper and you know what the headline story is? The "DC Quake"...the one in CO comes in five stories down from that. Sorry...earthquakes happen (many of them a higher magnitude than this one) all the time...the fact that it was in DC shouldn't make it a 24-hour news story.
THERE IT IS! Come on! Let's hear it! Let's hear it! Does somebody want to say something about a Rapture? An Apocalypse maybe? Or how about an Antichrist or two?
To all end of the world nuts out there, I have this to say: The end is NEVER nigh!
Well ManFromNantucket i have been studying the end times for nearly a decade now and i have something to say about it. There ARE certain SIGNS mentioned in the bible about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior. The signs as mentioned in earlier posts are earthquakes, diseases, etc... These signs are what leads us to the Second Coming of Jesus. This is called the RAPTURE. All the dead believers will be taken up in the clouds to meet Jesus first followed by all that are still alive that are believers in Him. This will be a world wide event seen by ALL MANKIND. WHEN this will happen only GOD KNOWS sure there are signs you can watch for. All the signs are written in the bible, however it is also written that NO ONE WILL KNOW THE DAY THAT THE SON OF GOD COMES BACK. Any prophesy claiming to know the year, day, or hour, are ALL FALSE PROPHESIES. (The bible also warns about false prophets leading many astray). These False prophesies i believe are the reason so many people call us nutcases. Its because these false prophets all have been wrong time and time again in all their predictions.
After the Rapture of the believers, the Antichrist will rise up and take power through plans to rebuild the original temple in Jerusalem, mediating a peace treaty between all the nations in the middle east with Israel basically creating peace in the middle east and by creating a world wide peace that will last 7 years. Out of chaos of those left behind during the rapture he will create a one world government, a one world currency, and a seven year period of world peace and prosperity under his rule.
Many may speculate today who might the antichrist be and where would he be from. I don't listen to all this hype. I listen to what the bible says. and after that 7 years of peace all hell will break lose marking the start of the apocalypes. NOTE THAT THE EARTH WILL NOT EVER BE DESTROYED IN THIS BUT GOD IS GOING TO REGENERATE THE EARTH. LIKEWISE MANKIND WILL NOT BE DESTROYED BUT WILL RATHER FACE A JUDGEMENT BY GOD.
Any Questions? Go to a local church and ask about it. I just gave you a brief summary of things to come according to the Bible which i believe IS THE INFALLABLE WORD OF GOD WRITTEN THROUGH HIS INSPIRATION BY HIS HOLY FOLLOWERS.
funnyfeds -- if the end of the world is coming, it's because nutjobs like you sit around and quote scripture while denying global climate change and shouting "drill baby drill" as if drilling that deep into the earth's surface wouldn't have an effect on changes in the earth's mantle. This isn't god's doing...it's our doing...and if we don't do something about it soon, we might see the end times, and, trust me, your "god" isn't going to be too happy with you when it happens.
Being liberal and Christain is not possible. Sorry but it just isn't. If you believe in truth then you're not a liberal. You could be a want to be Christian if your liberal or you could be a pretend Christian if your liberal but you can't be a true Christain and be a liberal. Sorry but it just doesn't work that way the 2 words are an oxymoron when used together.
Carianne, If you knew anything about the Bible you would understand that God put that fuel on this earth for us to use and using it will NOT harm the earth. I don't understand how anyone can still believe in this hoax after it has been debunked time and time again. This is what I mean about not being a Christian and a liberal. You can't believe in a lie like global warming and still think you're a Christian.
I completely disagree. STOP labeling and the world will be a better place because then we will have to HAVE CONVERSATIONS to learn about each other's individuality.
Christians are not intelligent enough to understand the science and reality of global warming, yet gullible enough to believe the falacy that there's a "god".
Karen...no need to acknowledge it. You're right, it's not normal in CO...but, it also wasn't that scary. Just a little bit of shaking. No major damage, no injuries...just a minor earthquake. I didn't expect it to make headlines (other than in CO, and only for a few hours). I just think we have bigger things going on in this country and around the world and that a 5.9 earthquake on the east coast (or a 5.3 in Colorado) does not merit a full day of front page coverage.
Carianne, While I agree there are a lot of important things going on in the world, I think it important to talk about earthquakes and reactions too. It's a bonding experience.
Veteran - I moved here AFTER Northridge and my first quake was in 1995.
Ah..ok then..why do you think there were people running outside? Do you think it might be because we aren't used to earthquakes here on the East Coast? LOL insert sarcasm here....seriously....kind of a no brainer...we aren't as "schooled" in Earth Quake Reaction here as people in CALI! Oops..I called it Cali again...sorry bout that!!! LOL I am laughing right now because in your post you seem to be very self righteous and to me..again...that is typical...but whatever.
Carianne, If you knew anything about the Bible you would understand that God put that fuel on this earth for us to use and using it will NOT harm the earth

clearly, being an intelligent, rational, thinking being and a conservative christian is not possible (as imc50 so clearly demonstrates with these inane remarks)
Let me save you some time and trouble. Karen isn't opinionated, she's senile.
Montanaman,
Along with anyone else who may have made comments about snow in California? You've obviously never been to the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada range, have you. It doesn't snow in inches up there, it snows in FEET, if not YARDS. Ever heard of the Donner party?
All you fruitcakes who have been brainwashed all your sorry lives by the Annunahki created so called religions need to get some serious medication. In the meantime, could someone please just remove the posts from these insane religious fanatics. Oh, and one more thing for you religious nutjobs- as far as the so called rapture( mentioned nowhere in the holy babble), I have just one comment for you on that: Be careful what you ask for. You might get it. And for the rest of us not in tinfoil hats, I offer this: May you live in interesting times.
Karen - Please don't allow yourself to be baited. To many good folks have been sent to suspension land for being sucked into an argument with no other intent than to attract moderators. You're much better than that, and shouldn't waste you talents debating with someone below your strata.
I have no interest whatsoever in debating pathetic people with the intellect of shale. I do have an interest in getting them off my planet. And, as far as I can tell, their rupture- ripture- rapture whatever, is the best way for that to happen. Then, after that happens, and they become the alien's buffet, the rest of us can start healing the planet and never speak of the digested lunatics again.
Oh Man, we are moving (escaping) from California to North Carolina next year. I thought earthquakes was going to be one of the many, many, many, many, reasons to leave California! Oh well, there are still millions of astronomical good reasons to leave California.
You Rapture prophets should be aware that Jesus claimed that the rapture (and his “second coming”) would occur BEFORE his human disciples died.
Luke 21: 32 - “Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.” (This same passage also appears in Mark 13: 30 and Matthew 24: 34. Jesus is also backed up by the apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4, verses 15 and 17.)
THEREFORE either -
1) Jesus came back already but nobody noticed OR
2) Jesus changed His mind and decided not to come back after all OR
"A magnetometer can be used to predict as well as give evidence of a HAARP created earthquake. A magnetometer measures disturbances in the magnetic field in Earth’s upper atmosphere. It is not a seismometer which measure motions of the ground. The magnetometer doesn’t measure seismic activity it measures and records electromagnetic frequencies in the Earth’s atmosphere. HAARP’s phased array antennas beam radio wave frequencies into the atmosphere. A radio wave is essentially an electromagnetic frequency, as is solar radiation. The scientists at the HAARP institute found that a 2.5 Hz radio frequency is the signature frequency of an earthquake. HAARP beams that earthquake frequency into the ionosphere and the ionosphere reflects it back to Earth – penetrating as deeply as several kilometers into the ground, depending on the geological makeup and subsurface water conditions in a targeted area.. By beaming the frequency at a specific trajectory HAARP can trigger an earthquake any place on Earth. A short burst isn’t enough to disturb solid matter (the Earth crust) so they keep beaming the 2.5 Hz earthquake frequency for hours or days – until the desired effect is achieved. HAARP was broadcasting the 2.5 Hz frequency from just before midnight on March 8, 2011 and continued to broadcast the frequency for the entire days of March 9, 2011 and March 10, 2011. The 2.5 Hz frequency continued to be broadcasted and recorded by the magnetometer for another 10 hours the day of the Japan 9.0 magnitude earthquake. You will notice on the USGS website that the Japan earthquake didn’t occur on the Ring of Fire Fault line. The epicenter was some 100 km west of the fault. The earthquake epicenter occurred on solid ground."
Christians are not intelligent enough to understand the science and reality of global warming, yet gullible enough to believe the falacy that there's a "god".
And liberals are arrogant enough to believe that science has all the answers and that somehow they are enlightened enough to understand it all. I am a Christian and believe in and study science, but I also see that this world is much too complex and interconnected to have just happened by chance. It takes more faith to believe chance mutations could create what we have than to believe there was some sort of intelligence behind it.
When man can create one living cell out of inert materials, we will be one-ten-thousandth of one percent there in understanding the universe.
I don`t know about that, Jesus was pretty darn liberal, some might even say he was a socialist.
just look at some of the things he did for free, he gave away food to poor people, he gave away free medical care and healing to poor people, a conservative would never give anything away free to poor people, so i`m pretty sure jesus was a liberal. He also forgave criminals and gave them a second chance by letting them go free, a conservative would never do that.
jesus told the people to pay their taxes ( render unto Caesar...) Conservatives say "no new taxes' " taxed enough already" conservatives want more tax cuts for the rich and for corporations.
Jesus advocated helping the poor directly, not through "government programs". This is what conservatives believe. (He also said, "The poor you will always have with you." ) Jesus said to pay your taxes. Conservatives pay their taxes. Not believing in more taxes is not the same as not believing in paying them. Look at the White House staff if you want to see how firmly liberals believe in paying taxes. Last I heard they had a collective overdue bill of like $8 million.
Jesus was a non-conformist who bucked the establishment of his day. He was also pretty much apolitical. When he was arrested and asked to speak in his own defense, he didn't give a speech about being an oppressed victim, etc. He said nothing and was crucified (while the government officials wondered out loud why he didn't even say anything in his defense.)
When his disciples wanted to fight the soldiers who came to get him, he told them to put their swords away. When he spoke of "His Kingdom", the disciples wanted to sit on his left and his right and share in the power... He explained that his kingdom was not of this world.
In short, Christ was here to fulfill his mission and die on the cross. His three years of ministry were not spent fighting social injustices but rather equipping his disciples to spread the gospel after his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. I think Jesus would look at all the churches today expending so much energy on the social injustices of the world and say, "I wish you were expending that energy on trying to reach people for the next world, which is eternal." That was clearly his focus.
Of all the folks on the vine...I find Karen's post the most vile if you consider all of them...once in a while she comes off polite but that is not the norm.
You need to read Dale Carnegie's book How to Win Friends and Influence People.
Pot, meet kettle.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I can only hope the next one we get is as small as 5.8.
Bruce - Jesus was indeed a liberal. He was the very first "invention" of the liberal.
He certainly would have supported government programs to help the needy, as that was the whole thrust of His ministry. He blessed the poor and the meek and cursed the wealthy, saying they would never make it into His kingdom.
Nonconformist, yes - perhaps even a heretic. But definitely NOT some wimpy conservative whining about taxes.
Actually, I help people out quite a bit, and not because the government requires it. I do it because Christ told us to, "Love your neighbor as yourself." I don't like to toot my horn, but since you did ask, just last Sunday I helped a young person I don't even know move all her possessions because her family backed out on her. Spent my whole Sunday on it with my truck and trailer. Asked for nothing in return. This week I also helped a stranger on Craigslist troubleshoot a broken item so she could get top dollar for it. Again, expected nothing in return. (I could have bought it for less than half it's value, fixed it myself, and pocketed a nice profit but I could tell she really needed the money, so I helped her fix it instead.)
I know LOTS of conservative Christians (you'd probably call them evil) and they volunteer in soup kitches, homeless shelters, etc. When there is a need they chip in help because they believe it's the right thing to do.
I live about an hour from the epicenter in Central Va. Things shook pretty hard here for what seemed like forever ( I was at home) and the noise was pretty freaky. I got a call from my sister in CA about 10 minutes after it happened. I must admit, it is a pretty erie feeling to hear things creaking and shaking in your home that don't usually do that.
Earthquakes can happen everywhere. No one is safe from quakes. One of the biggest faultlines runs right through Missouri. The east coast needs to listen to us "experts" on the west coast.
Advise from the west coast on what to do or not do:
The first thing you do after a quake is make sure you have no injuries.
..do NOT get on the phone. You need to leave the lines opened so emergency services to be able to communicate.
Second..if you see public phones hanging off the hooks hang them.
Check your immediate area to see if there are gas leaks or broken water lines etc. and try to shut them off or contact a neighbor or an official if there is a rupture of some type. You got to turn off these hazards in order to prevent gas explosions or in case of fires.
DO NOT get on an elevator or go down stairways while the shaking is going on.
If your power is off dont open your refrigerator unless necessary in order to keep your food as cold as possible for as long as you can.
Everyone should make an emergency kit in the event of natural disasters with non-perishable food, blankets, water,12ft. x12ft. plastic tarp, matches, camp stove and lantern, flashlights and first aid kits plus a portable radio and batteries. There should be enough supplies that will last at least 3 days.
There are suggested necessities listed on the internet of what you should have. There should be a kit with enough supplies for each family member.
Have an alternate exit from your home in the event your door way is blocked.
Have a place where you and your family can all meet in case you are seperated.
Just to be helpful to you all concerned...the better prepared you are the less stressful it wil be for you.
Another thing to all you government officials...all buildings in the country should be built using the same codes country wide, not just in one area. The more care taken in construction the safer everyone is through out the country. Our infrastructure blows guys! Its time to rebuild it to the same standards as the rest of the modern world. We need to look toward other countries who live in more seismically active areas and apply the same or better standards. If we can pay for wars and to rebuild the rest of the world we can do it for ourselves too. We deserve it!!
There are 3 types of quakes..the snapping kind (caused by a quick slipping of the plates), the rolling kind (usually shallow sliding vibrations across the surface) and the deep rumbling kind (deeper shifting and slipping together). Been in all of theem..the snapping ones are the freakiest and usually do the most damage.
A 5.4 is usually the same felling of a large group of trucks driving by.

A 5.4 is usually the same felling of a large group of trucks driving by.
finally, be sure to double post instructions on what to do in an earthquake on MSNBC because everyone knows, everyone wants your opinion on what to do.
LOL... just kidding...... good bit of useful information.
Thanks, elaine-2138913. As the locally dubbed 'safety-girl' I love your post! I've never experienced anything larger than a 3 on the Richter Scale, but I live dang close to a big fault. Being prepared to take care of ourselves and our families for at least the first few days after an incident is one of The Best things we can do.
Hoping everyone's having a great afternoon. Be careful out there! :)
Wake up call for the probable cat 4 hurricane heading right at all those "rattled" folks on the eastern coastline..........talk about a one - two punch!
Thanks, elaine. Those are some of the same ways we prepare, or rather stay prepared, for floods, blizzards, hurricanes and tornadoes. This was not the first quake for a lot of us.
Figured a decent song by Canadian Band Great Big Sea might be fitting here: Its the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine... Here come apocalypse predictions... lol.
Lib50, there are two reasons as to why the quake was felt in such a large area. The first is that most of the U.S. is on one plate. California is on its own plate separate from the rest of the country (that is why people say that a "great quake" will put it in the ocean). The second reason was that it was shallow, not very deep in the earth. We felt it here in NY. We have also felt them in Ca. while visiting family there.
Felt in Delaware. We are going to be spending the next few days cleaning up this mess, if the hurricane doesn't do *more* damage. Not sure if a multifloored library is a good thing anymore.
Mercury: That's almost right. Most of California is on the same plate as the rest of North America. Only the areas west of the San Andreas fault are part of the Pacific Plate. The real reason that the shaking spread so far is that east of the Rockies the bedrock is very solid, and therefore it transmits energy much more efficiently. In the west (the Rocky mountains all the way to the coast) the crust has been victim to the traumas of the past. Volcanoes, massive uplifts, earthquake faults and the like have broken up and crushed the bedrock. The ground out west is more loose, and tends to absorb shocks better than out east.
You're definitely right about the depth of the quake though, that allowed it to be felt more strongly, especially close to the epicenter.
You know that President Obama is to blame... (tongue in cheek)
Probably some Voodoo or religious thingy he's doing in the basement of the White House....
Fox News and the republican/Tea party are sure to blame the president for a simple earth quake... Why not, they blame him for everything else, even what THEY DID WRONG...
DOT, it goes to show you don't know much about federal employees. New feds get 13 days a year. Once you reach 15 years of employment, you get 26 days. I'm proud to be a fed who has worked 35 years. How long have you worked at the same job?
Terry-Ca I guess the republicans blaming Obama for the earthquake will be about the same as the democrats blaming Bush for the hurricanes a couple of years ago!!
Did you forget that Mr. Obama isn't in the White House...he's staying at one of those "wealthy corporate jet owner's" palace on Martha's Vineyard...working on his golf game in his goofy little hat.
We had one down south once too, a couple years ago. I had just gone to bed when the house started shaking. I sat up and the bed was rattling, too, and I just remember thinking, should I stay here or get up. Well, it ended in just a bit. When I asked people I know about it the next day, they all thought I was nuts. Then again, they've ALWAYS thought that. lol It was reported a few days later, that a small earthquake had occured in the gulf.
Maybe the infiltrators are blowing up the tunnels behind them. ;)
REALLY? Really? I love the way people find a way to blame "Mr O" for everything that is wrong with this country. I guess it is much easier to place blame on someone that doesn't look like you, then someone who does. This country has been headed down the wrong path for years( the path of entitlements, greed, me first, how can I make my pockets fatter) and that was not a path that that was started by "Mr O" I belive Mr B, Mr C and Mr R had a little to do with it.
Amen! And look at them, our FEARLESS leaders, all leaving work…even the Pentagon! In essence our LEADERS abandoned the ship while the rest of us keep on working. Geez! Makes you proud, eh?!
Congress has been warned with Ma Nature, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."
Me? Been in an earthquake while in Idaho, Germany, Illinois. Lived in CA for seven years; never had the pleasure. Felt one mild tremor in northwestern PA with the epic center in Toronto about a year ago. No worries.
Ain't no shakin' this gal a-skeered. <winks to all>
SOME people need to lighten up already! Jeeeez, people can't enjoy a good joke without having nose-bent willy jumpin' in trying to ruin the moment.
Sad to have such a "woe is me" life that you have to try to bring everybody else down with you. We all are born to die. But the point is to try to have some FUN and cheerfulness somewhere in between. "Laughter is the best medicine".
When I saw the headlines I thought I didn't feel a thing here in Seattle. Hope my family in Burke & Warrenton are okay and of course all the rest of you.
Joyce from Washington - You guys don't get many earthquakes up there like we do down here in So-CAL, but, then, heard any rumblings from Mt. St. Helens lately?
St. Helens is always rumbling. But the rumblings are just small enough that it's not felt outside the immediate vicinity. Still, it's been only about 5 years since the last eruption of note, so who knows...
We felt the second floor of the restaurant we were eating in shake. Felt like someone was jiggling their their foot under the table legs. Just returned from Alaska where we encountered a 5.5 in Anchorage. Equal time for the East Coast. We are about 5 hours from the epicenter. Parkersburg/Vienna, West Virginia
Dude I will never live on the West Coast!!! My house rocked from side to side with my wife and kids.. I thought the roof was collasping!!! Gotta get a change of underware!! Maryland!!
Haha! I live on the west coast and let me tell you how casual some people are about our small quakes, I for one sit through a mild quake while going about my business. No quake is going to interrupt my day!
On a serious note, I really did sit though a quake, however I did walk for cover.
This will teach people to make fun of California. The east coast get's everything: Blizzards, tornados, wildfires, and hurricanes, one of which is going to hit the east coast later this week.
This cannot be compared to what you get on the west coast. A 5.8 on the west coast is like patting a baby on the back to get it to burp. In the east coast and in the midwest an earthquake of this magnitude is much more noticable because the ground here is softer. Not hard like in the west coast.
If (well, let's face it...WHEN) a big one hits the New Madrid fault line or one of these other areas where the ground is softer it's going to be like the earthquake that China saw a couple years ago. It will be nothing like it is in California...it will be worse.
I spent 4 years in California. It got to the point where I'd ride out the little 5.5's and 5.8's as if I were surfing. Then I'd go right back to work. No biggie.
I got lucky and moved to Seattle just a few months before the big San Francisco quake that pancaked the raised highway / broke the bay bridge / tried to level part of San Francisco.
Then I got hit with the 7.0 Nisqually quake here in Seattle a few years ago. THAT was a fun one....
You could also possibly feel it more on the East coast because the West Coast has been building "earthquake resistant" buildings for years now. I'm not sure how much of that is done on the East Coast being that they aren't prone to earthquakes (most of the time) We have pretty strict building codes even for residences out here. In any case, a 5.8 is a pretty good jolt to anyone who has never experienced an earthquake before.
I'm glad that the West Coasters can sit back and have a laugh, but people on the East Coast don't have earthquakes included in their building codes. Go on and chuckle, but people could have gotten hurt if it was worse.
Hi, I just experienced my first Earthquake, here in Rhode Island. I felt the sofa sway back and forth and I thought I was having a dizzy spell, lol. Then I saw everything that was hanging, swaying back and forth. My dog started barking like crazy...oh, oh...Earthquake!!!
Excuse me!!! Us Californians freak out with tiny earthquakes... Read the previous posts from my fellow Californians... A 5.9 Quake is a nice roller coaster ride... No Biggie!!! Have quakes on a daily basis... Most of us go about our business after the quake happens and do not freak out like you claim!!
And no we do not only have hard ground... there is soft soil in areas of our state that cause extensive damage to buildings as well and spreads out to a large area... This is common in parts of LA area which is considered a high desert!
@ClaTek... I'm from California, and I've never been excused from work for a rain storm. Don't know where you're getting your information. In fact, I've worked through earthquakes of that magnitude and bigger. I don't know one Californian who freaks out over earthquakes.
For us it's just another day in paradise... hater!
Why aren't there earthquake codes for buildings on the east coast, or anywhere, for that matter? Just because an area doesn't normally have earthquakes, doesn't mean it can't.
I apologize on behalf of my fellow Californians. A 5.9 is a decent rumbling, but since it was a shallow earthquake, it probably felt a lot stronger.
The only thing that's a bit over-reactive is shutting down the airports in New York. In Virginia, I can understand. Come on, Big Apple, suck it up a little.
There will be aftershocks, so hang in there. Some of them might feel as strong as the original earthquake. Things will settle down. The most important part is that no one was hurt (I hope not too badly).
SJDuges - I don't see any Californians saying anything for you to have to apologize for my friend, name me ONE thing anybody has said that is rude or derogatory. A few statements about overreacting, but nothing rude that I've seen on this vine.
To everyone who lives in California. I apologize for all the bad things I said about ya'll experience with earthquakes. I am here in Baltimore, MD and this is my first earthquake. I called my cousin in San Francisco and told her what happened and the magnitude of the earthquake and she laughed at me. She said that that magnitude to her, she sleeps through it and works through it with no problem. Before she hung up, she said, "Welcome to my world, eastie!!!!"
Oh yeah, rereading stuff here, I realized east coast quake was closer to the surface and the soil was softer so it shook harder. I just had a friend txt me to tell me about his quake experience, oddly he was excited about it.
Roll through this one east coast you'll be fine. I can guarentee though if the roles were reverse and we (californians) had hurricanes and snow storms I wouldn't be happy about it or know how to deal.
Get the facts...airports weren;t closed or shut down. Flights were delayed until they inspected the runways and towers. That isn't an over reaction. And it certainly doesn't translate to a shut down. The article never even said that. Where do you get the leap from a delay to a closure?
Actually Eric, my girlfriend was at her gate in JFK and they announced they were closing the airport to traffic. Of course it was just until they did an inspection and everything got up and running in about 30 min, but they did use the words closed and shut down.
While there are many buildings on the east coast that are not "earthquake proof", I do believe that buildings that went up over the last not sure how many years, do have to meet similar standards as on the west coast. I also believe that buildings over a certain number of stories have to be able to withstand high winds (this goes back quite a number of years). That requirement may help keep some taller buildings from falling (I hope).
I was going to say the same thing until I saw your post. Not an overreaction at all, just a brief inspection. I did the same thing to my house. I do have to say, as a former Californian, this felt far different than the quakes out there. More shaking and rattling, less wavy and nauseating.
Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll stick to quakes. :) Any hurricane that can reach Nevada...even far western Nevada...I don't want any part of it. I'll trade you a "Donner Party Winter" though. :)
Survived four, 6.9, 7.2, 7.2 and 7.0 during 53 years around western Washington state. Washington state is on the Pacific plate and is subject to the same kind of 9.0 or greater earthquake like Japan recently experienced.
During the first 7.2, I believe around 1962, I was on the 45th floor of the Smith tower, a very old building in Seattle, it swayed so badly it was difficult to stand up, the plaster on the walls and roof started cracking, we all headed for the elevators thinking we were about to die, but the elevators were stuck or something so we all headed for the stairs. fortunately my two companions and I were about 20, and we covered each flight of stairs in about three leaps, and When we finally reached the street and looked up, it was just a rain of glass and bricks coming down, so we all stood in the middle of 4th avenue
Once in awhile I think of that terrifying day and think of those trying to escape the Twin towers........God bless their souls
Didn't see your post until later in the day. You have a fair point. I guess I was reacting to some of the overreactions. It must have been scary for those folks. We're obviously better prepared for a temblor that size.
SJDuges - We're really taking a beating from people on these vines, but as a Californian I will just say to everybody, Peace and Have a Nice day. And you also my fellow Californian, Peace and Have a Nice Day. I think I'll go down to the beach this evening and watch the sun set. Very soothing.
haha i had to laugh at tht a little but yea the quake wasnt tht bad in philly i thought people were doin work outside lol i jus looked outside then went back to my business nothin major...
Yes, everyone. John is an expert not only on The South, The West, The Midwest, Texas, medicine, chemistry, social welfare, and sex education, but he's also a renowned authority on Philadelphia. (P.S. John - they're talking about the real Philly, in PA, not some little town in the midwest! LOL. Moron.)
**UPDATE** It's been confirmed that what Michigan felt was the effects of Ndamukong Suh blasting some undrafted free agent running back at Lions practice.
You're a scientist, right? First, you have a laboratory. Second, you say "about 399 miles". No one but a scientist would say that; everyone else would say "about 400 miles". Nothing wrong with being a scientist; I'm just sayin'.
My daughter and her boyfriend asked me the same thing about fault lines in that area, as far as i know there aren`t any fault lines in that area, very strange.
There don't have to be. Earthquake waves travel much like sound waves or ripples in a pond across the surface of the earth from the epicenter. They travel even farther if the earthquake is shallow, like this one seemed to be. There wouldn't have to be any fault lines in your area in order for you to feel it.
If you're a scientist, I'm rather surprised that you would not know this. We here on the West Coast learn earthquake science in middle school. Probably because we get them all the time...
Well, I'm not a geologist, which partially explains my ignorance of the situation, but yes, I do research.
As rjh so aptly put there are other factors that play into Earthquakes. I did a quick search and got this tidbit of info off of *groan* Wikipedia.
Earthquakes away from plate boundaries
Where plate boundaries occur within continental lithosphere, deformation is spread out over a much larger area than the plate boundary itself. In the case of the San Andreas fault continental transform, many earthquakes occur away from the plate boundary and are related to strains developed within the broader zone of deformation caused by major irregularities in the fault trace (e.g., the “Big bend” region).
Seismic waves travel very far east of the Rockies because the crust is less broken up and more contiguous. Sort of like how you can hear a train coming in the contiguous rails long before you hear the sound in the air. In the west millions of years of earthquakes, volcanoes, and other acts of intercontinental violence have broken the bedrock up, so it is able to absorb a lot more shock.
I thought I was going crazy as I saw my computer monitor at work sway a little and felt my chair moving back and forth. Thought it was one of my co-workers trying to be funny and shake my chair from behind. When I turned around my co-worker was at the station farthest away and I glanced at the T.V. behind me and it shows an earthquake in the middle of Virginia! I was like I MUST be going crazy. I couldn't have felt that all the way up here in the Northeast Corner of CT! But a few other employees felt it and confirmed my thought afterward. Crazy!
I am surprised that conservatives are not blaming the earthquake on Muslims yet.
I'm surprised that the end of the world nuts haven't come out screaming, "The sky is falling! The apocalypse is upon us! Repent now! It's the end of the world as we know it! The Rapture is here!"
But in a response to everyone claiming it is someone else's fault, It was not Bush's fault, it wasn't Obama's fault, it's not the muslims, tea party, etc. Anyone posting that it was, is either making a joke or just dumb.
It`s good to know that in the event of a real national emergency we will be able to count on our leaders to abandon ship and run at the first sign of trouble, what a bunch of self serving douchebags!
Yeah, why does everyone always want to evacuate? If stuff is falling from your building, it's probably no safer outside with no cover. Get under your desk or in a doorway or small room like the bathroom or something.
Not the first earthquake to hit this region - NY had a 3.9 last year. When the Ramapo Fault breaches the Indian Point Nuke Plant, then we'll worry. Until then - meh. We're actually making jokes around here - the latest is playing "Rock and Roll All Night", preceded by "Rock Around the Clock". LOL!!
Well, since most of us have never experienced an earthquake, I'm sure we'll "overreact" quite a bit. After all, it is kind of scary to be home alone and to suddenly be in a swaying house with stuff flying everywhere. Just sayin'.....
Thats the first earthquake i`ve ever felt so I was too ignorant to be worried because I didn`t know what the heck was happening. next time it happens i`ll be sure to panic and go running into the street like our gutless leaders in washington did this time.
Overreact??? To us, this was very exciting. The only shaking we normally get is from the bedroom...
I do understand they can be very serious, and very deadly, but this was the first time we actually got a jolt big enough to feel the swaying motion of the ground. It was pretty freaky if you've never felt a decent one, like me. i could feel the entire ground slowly move forward several inches, and then back. It only lasted a few seconds, but I get it. I'm about 150-200 miles south of the epicenter in Chesapeake VA. What i am kind of surprised about is the magnitude of the effects. It seems like the entire East Coast felt it, so it's effects were felt for 1000's of square miles. A major quake on the East Coast would do significant damage to a very wide area, and we have no precedence to go by. Our building would crumble to the ground everywhere, because we have no building codes to cover quakes. Sure does make you feel utterly small...
We felt it here in RI. strange feeling... felt almost like being on a ship in rough water. Seriously, I think it has to do with those two new $1.5 million dollar busses that were made in "CANADA." They are putting a few tons of extra weight on the plates, AND they were made in Canada!! Keeping the jobs in America, Mr. President???

My building swayed in New York.
Our office building in CT shook too.
I am happy that you guys are safe. I have most of my family back east. Take care and be safe everyone.
I felt it here in the Detroit area. A tremor - but things moved. It took MSN just a few minutes to put their report up - which I was watching for. Having lived in California, it brought back such fond memories. Not.
Felt it here in north east Indiana. My co-workers thought I was drunk lol! 5 minutes later here is the proof.
Wasn't there a 5.5 quake this morning in Colorado??
In Nashville area, I felt nothing but all dogs in the area were howling and my Guard Dog was hiding under the porch howling around the time the quake happened.
interesting.
you think that was fun? You shoulda been here in the Seattle Wa. area when the 7.0 Nisqually quake hit... that was about 14 times the size of what you got!
I'm glad that everyone seems to have come out of this one ok.
Our building was swaying way up here in Pittsfield Mass... things moving around and building made noises.
I felt it in my office in Raleigh.
I'm in Norther Virgina and we shook pretty good here. There was a brief tremor just before the main quake hit.
Felt a slight tremor here in upstate New York, about 45 miles south of Montreal Canada.
Nothing serious, just set off a few car alarms.
Hope all of you near the epicenter are okay.
Richmond - got a pretty good shaking here.
Felt it in northern suburbs of Philly!
Felt like something grabbed our building and shook it side to side for 10 seconds.
We felt it here in our office building in NE Ohio too!!! WOW! Very rare occurance here!
Does anyone know if the quake in Colorado and New Mexico is related to the quake on the east coast? Like I'm just curious from a geological perspective if it's possible for one plate moving to set off other plates?
Felt it here in Eastern NC too. Felt like about a 1.x to 2 based on the quakes I've felt elsewhere in the past.
I felt it here in Detroit too. I was in a meeting and the conference room started to sway.
I'm in Richmond, near the apparent epicenter, and the shaking lasted about 30 seconds. Loud, too! Never heard anything like it before.
Great.
That wasn't an earthquake - it was the politicians crashing our economy
Sorry guys. I accidentally dropped my wallet on the ground.... Wont happen again.
Oh no! Is the East Coast going to fall in to the ocean! Oh, dearie me. What will we do?
Welcome to what life is like on the west coast. Now go change your shorts.
Felt it here in NJ - there was a brief tremor before the main quake. Shook for about 30 seconds. Not really significant enough to be scary.
My first Earthquake, building swaying in Virginia Beach, still have goosebumps. That was oddest feeling I have ever had. We are all safe, hope everyone else is also!!
This is more fodder for the Nibiru/Elenin doomsday fruitcakes. They're very entertaining to watch on YouTube.
wow, that was strange I had no idea what was happening, so thats what an earthquake feels like? We are expecting a big hurricane here this weekend mother nature should have saved the earthquake for next week.
A shallow earthquake is far more dangerous then a deep one and this one it is being reported as only being 3 miles deep, very shallow.
Hopefully no one was injured.
Didn't feel it in California but I have felt more then my fair share of earthquakes in my lifetime.
I thought Rosie O'Donnel had farted.
Hope you all are ok. Shaking here too. Comment above too soon? You've got to laugh sometimes.
The problem is 99% of the East coast buildings and infrastructure is not prepared for earthquakes as the West coast is. There is also danger for the Midwest in the Madrid fault area, we have been lucky, but as this proves it can and it will happen.
Yo Earthquake, Ima let you finish, but Earthquakes in San Francisco are the best earthquakes in the world!
Earthquake was felt for ~10 second in central PA.
Low rumble and slight shake up here in downtown Boston MA.
Hope everyone is ok.
I live in Upstate NY and I felt it. That was a very strange feeling, I thought my roof was going to fall. Hope eveyone is OK.
And in other news...Janet Reno felt nothing during the quake.
Man, that is BAD.
Take it easy folks, it ain't no BIG thing. But then, we'd probably be all anxious out here in So-CAL if we had a Hurricane. Maybe California isn't going to fall off into the ocean, maybe we'll stay put and the REST of the country will fall off into the ocean?????
This would explain that weird shaking i felt here in Cherryville NC, i thought it was my house settling at first till i saw this article
I pray that everyone stays safe and that is all you are going to get. Scary world we live in.
The Mouzer
The earthquale from Colorado is the same earthquale that hit the east coast. Crazy huh?
Just great! Cost of gas will go up another $1.50 a gallon.
Stay safe out there, folks!
Oh, Rich, you poor fool. Kharma will have a field day with your cold heart.
Evacuated from the 27th floor in NYC. We felt the whole building sway.
Can't wait to see how Sean Hannity blames Obama for this.
Mild shake in Albany NY. Second one in a year, first from Canada, now from VA. If we felt it here they must have been rockin' and rollin' in VA.
It felt like one of those rumble strips they put on the sides of highways that make your car vibrate if you stray over the white line.
Oops! Forgot about Hurricane Irene bearing down on us...make that $2.50 a gallon and a 15% drop in the Nasdaq.
We felt it here at work in Pasadena, Maryland.
I listen to the news all day. No sooner did I hear the "breaking news" about an earthquake, I rec'd a text from my sister near NYC.
It was a big one even by CA standards. That magnitude usually makes me nautious.
Isn't it kind of fun to talk about afterward?
You have snow days on the east coast, and we have earthquake days on the west coast (because we talk about it all day and don't do anything else).
Veteran
speak for YOURSELF. a 5.9 or 6 magnitude is BIG to ME and everyone here in my office.
Scary Weird!
TGFD here.
I'm in Northern Delaware. House started shaking and vibrating, and as I sat at my post, I really wasn't sure whatTF was happening. Went outside, looked around, nothing noticable, went back in, all was already over. Lasted maybe 10 seconds or so.
@Mrs.Holly it was the same quake? Holy cow!
ATTENTION EVERYONE, THERE IS NO NEED TO WORRY. MICHELLE BACHMANN IS HERE TO SAVE US ALL!!!
https://twitter.com/#!/micheibachmann/status/106068010095218689
/s
... there was a 5.3 in Colorado this morning too.
I see a bad moon rising,
I see trouble on the way,
I see earthquakes and lightning,
I see a bad time today.
..........You just can't top Fogerty and the CCR!
I completely forgot about this until you and my coworker brought it up.
I live and work between Boston and the Cape. We didn't feel a thing here.
I didn't feel a thing in Michigan!
But there were reports of around a 5.5 quake in Colorado that I read about this morning.
Hope everyone is safe. Sounds like there was a whole lot of shake'n goin' on!
I live in Ohio and didn't notice a thing. I was kind of surprised when I read it online. I hope everyone is OK!
Felt it in central Ohio. My co-workers said I was nuts when I asked them if they felt the shaking. Hah! They feel dumb now.
Oh I forgot to mention....
(Sarcasm font on)
It must have been Bush's fault.
(Sarcasm font off)
It's all relative to where you live and how the buildings are constructed.
Annnnddd we're off topic ....NOW!
I think that is a hoax twitter page. Isn't her name spelled Michele? I don't have a twitter account so I'm unsure how to tell if they are authentic accounts to celebrities and such.
D.Man you asked for it:
It's all Obama's fault... he was supposed to be the Messiah, NOT>
The planet must be fed up with all the bull@!$%# in washington d.c.
JAXX,
Nobody out here refers to California as Cali, and I don't think we're being rude.
@Smalltown Peter
LOL, are you F$%#ing kidding me?????!!!!!
"Tsunamis of BLOOD" ????
As a California native I can say I've been in much worse.
Wow, Veteran, you're one of those, huh? Can't let any one else have their own experiences or their own stories, cause you can always top them. I don't mean to be rude, but the folks I've known who do that are real "fun" at parties.
It's a sign that we are having an earthquake... the "sign" just came and went. You missed it.
@William Mcarthur
@dirp101 and funnyfeds
THERE IT IS! Come on! Let's hear it! Let's hear it! Does somebody want to say something about a Rapture? An Apocalypse maybe? Or how about an Antichrist or two?
To all end of the world nuts out there, I have this to say: The end is NEVER nigh!
Nah, it's caused by global warming.
Believe me...those of us that dwell on the west coast are not trying to embarrass or laugh you. We are actually trying to make you feel better and give some good advise to help you deal with this. We have all been through it and we totally no how you feel believe me. We are not the shallow, clueless people you think we are.
or yosemity getting ready to blow
I've got a sneaky feeling that either George Bush, Fox News, or the Tea Party is going to get the blame for this !
And what about that 'Perry' guy from Texas...where was he when this thing hit ???
LOL
I'm sure Rush Limpd!ck is preparing his "Obama earthquake distraction conspiracy" segment for the retards that need to be told what to think.
I am sure that the epicenter is already being called "Bush's Fault!" by the administration!
Here from Dayton Ohio, We felt nothing ;)
Hope you guys had no serious damage.
saddened - I just get a little tired of OTHER people and their snide remarks, like for instance if California got a foot of snow we'd all put in for welfare, the Sierras in Northern California got 100 FEET of snow this winter my friend, I didn't even mention THAT did I? Don't be one of THOSE saddened, whatever THOSE is. Anyway you'all have a Nice Day now Heah?????
I felt it here in Colorado too. Oh wait...I guess that was the 5.3 quake that we had here, which nobody is reporting on. You know why? Because minimal damage was done, nobody was hurt and it just wasn't a big F'ing deal.
This is JUST LIKE CA when we have an earthquake. It's all we talk about for the day.
This is the ONLY seed that has got any action today.
By the way, the first one is always scary and then you get used to it.
Veteran - I think the reason why some people were snarky was the snarky attitude of SOME Californians.
I thought it was kind of cute how everyone reacted because they never felt an earthquake before. I remembered the first time I felt one.
Keep talking everyone. That's how it's done!
A veteran
I don't look forward to it the accuracy is astounding. i hope is a bad theory and don't pan out.
you have a nice day as well.
I just gave you a brief summary of things to come according to the Bible which i believe IS THE INFALLABLE WORD OF GOD WRITTEN THROUGH HIS INSPIRATION BY HIS HOLY FOLLOWERS.
actually thought this news item would be exempt from politics.I am sooooooo naive.
It was HAARP...uhhh...no, wait,...it was...uh.... nibiru....no, wait,...it was...uh...uh....chemtrails.....that's it...uh....no, wait,...it was...uh...uh...
See: Plate tectonics, stupid
funnyfeds -- if the end of the world is coming, it's because nutjobs like you sit around and quote scripture while denying global climate change and shouting "drill baby drill" as if drilling that deep into the earth's surface wouldn't have an effect on changes in the earth's mantle. This isn't god's doing...it's our doing...and if we don't do something about it soon, we might see the end times, and, trust me, your "god" isn't going to be too happy with you when it happens.
funnyfed
Rapture crapture. God schmod It's the 21st century, not the dark ages. Get real.
Now a hurricane has its sights on this area, whens the last time both hit the east coast within a week?
Be safe everyone!
FUNNYFED, Great post!
Carianne
I want to acknowledge the earthquake in CO and that is NOT NORMAL.
I hope that you and your family are OK.
I agree that CO should not be overshadowed. I think part of the problem is that the news thinks that CO gets quakes all the time.
I wasn't certain when I heard about it this morning. My worker informed me that it's not normal.
EVERYONE - IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR CO TO GET EARTHQUAKES EITHER.
IMC...thank you for giving us the "fuel" to determine that your posts aren't worth reading.
I completely disagree. STOP labeling and the world will be a better place because then we will have to HAVE CONVERSATIONS to learn about each other's individuality.
OH GREAT!!!!!
Just another reason for Obama to blame why his policies don't work.
Bush ---- check
Republicans ---- check
Greece ---- check
Tornadoes---- check
Tsunami---- check
ATM's ---- check
Arab Spring ---- check
And now earthquakes.
This is a contemporary Building ..built to code .. I'm surprised that anything falling in a quake of this magnitude would be acceptable ...
I live about seventy five miles from the epicenter near Saluda, Virginia .. it was just a mild tremor for about 30 seconds here ....
Can someone please tell me what time the quake occured.
Columbus, Ohio... No one I know felt a thing. Only found out because of all of the news interruptions.
IIRC, the quake occurred at around 1:51pm EDST.
Maybe it was just DC plumbing trouble. You know, all of the BS that's backed up there. ~_o
Carianne, While I agree there are a lot of important things going on in the world, I think it important to talk about earthquakes and reactions too. It's a bonding experience.
Veteran - I moved here AFTER Northridge and my first quake was in 1995.
To Rescuedogs,
Ah..ok then..why do you think there were people running outside? Do you think it might be because we aren't used to earthquakes here on the East Coast? LOL insert sarcasm here....seriously....kind of a no brainer...we aren't as "schooled" in Earth Quake Reaction here as people in CALI! Oops..I called it Cali again...sorry bout that!!! LOL I am laughing right now because in your post you seem to be very self righteous and to me..again...that is typical...but whatever.
Sean with the number
You are rude and condescending. I could care less what you think of me at all.
I wanted to be certain that you know.
I stopped reading after the first nasty sentence.
You need to read Dale Carnegie's book How to Win Friends and Influence People.
Hmmm, I think I remember the bible saying something about earthquakes happening all over the earth and then the end would come...... Interesting.
Karen in Los Angeles
That's a good book, I have 1 friend now
mdsj
OMG!OMG! Earthquakes happening ALL OVER THE WORLD!
OMG! OMG ! OMG! THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE ! OMG!
LOL!
Bible schmible Buy a clue.
It's Bush's fault, no wait, it's Congress' fault, no wait, it was the Tsunami's fault.
Virgil Starkwell
Woody?
Allen.
81 - are you sure you weren't watching the movie " How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" instead?
Woody Allen caused this earthquake?
and
clearly, being an intelligent, rational, thinking being and a conservative christian is not possible (as imc50 so clearly demonstrates with these inane remarks)
Karen, Virgil Starkwell is a Woody Allen Character from Take the money and run.
Sean-336944,
Let me save you some time and trouble.
Thanks Virgil - the ONLY Woody Allen movie I liked was Hannah and Her Sisters but my friends are talking up the newest one so I might go.
Sean with the number - DON'T WRITE TO ME BECAUSE YOU ARE RUDE.
No one cares what rude people have to say so you might as well save yourself some time because WE DON'T CARE.
Run along now or behave.
Karen - Please don't allow yourself to be baited. To many good folks have been sent to suspension land for being sucked into an argument with no other intent than to attract moderators. You're much better than that, and shouldn't waste you talents debating with someone below your strata.
I know they wanted to stimulate the economy, I'm just glad the HAARP operators didn't turn the juice up like they did in Haiti.
(open your eyes)
Thanks Virgil. I appreciate the reminder.
I want to see Midnight in Paris. EVERYONE tells me it's great.
Have a good evening.
Oh no! Earthquakes!
To funnyfeds, dirp101, mdsj, et al -
You Rapture prophets should be aware that Jesus claimed that the rapture (and his “second coming”) would occur BEFORE his human disciples died.
THEREFORE either -
1) Jesus came back already but nobody noticed OR
2) Jesus changed His mind and decided not to come back after all OR
3) Jesus lied OR
4) the Bible is false.

He also forgave criminals and gave them a second chance by letting them go free, a conservative would never do that.
jesus told the people to pay their taxes ( render unto Caesar...) Conservatives say "no new taxes' " taxed enough already" conservatives want more tax cuts for the rich and for corporations.
anyway you look at it,jesus was a liberal.
Bruce...who have you helped lately?
Karen in Los Angeles
Should I send you a book entitled "Being a Jerk - How to be a smartass and compose yourself with a false sense of accomplishment"?
Of all the folks on the vine...I find Karen's post the most vile if you consider all of them...once in a while she comes off polite but that is not the norm.
To the Californians who said we don't talk about earthquakes all day - HA - here is proof that I am correct.
We just had a 4.2 earthquake in the San Fernando Valley.
Within 30 minutes, more than 50 people commented on CBS LA's website about their experience. That's only a blog.
http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/09/01/did-you-feel-it-m4-1-quake-shakes-la/
It was felt in my office building here in Piscataway, NJ
I've had farts that registered higher
Freaky stuff... felt it here in Fairfield, NJ. Wow that is a weird feeling. I hope everyone is ok in VA.
Glad I haven't been near your bathroom, Darrel. Actually, glad I haven't been in your vacinity. Triple flutter-blasts, huh?
That shouldnt be too hard since no one is there anyway...they are all on vacation!
Hmm, 5.3 earthquake hits Colorado this am and then another 5.9 just hit Virginia…
I thought it was a low-flying jet plane. My chandelier and house shook for about 20 seconds. I'm about 120 mis. south of the epicenter. No damage.
Gymnast 88,..thanks for the thought.
I live about an hour from the epicenter in Central Va. Things shook pretty hard here for what seemed like forever ( I was at home) and the noise was pretty freaky. I got a call from my sister in CA about 10 minutes after it happened. I must admit, it is a pretty erie feeling to hear things creaking and shaking in your home that don't usually do that.
dang, darrel, open a window...
in all seriousness, I'm here in NYC and yes we felt it, but why did they have to close the airports?
If your power is off dont open your refrigerator unless necessary in order to keep your food as cold as possible for as long as you can.

finally, be sure to double post instructions on what to do in an earthquake on MSNBC because everyone knows, everyone wants your opinion on what to do.
LOL... just kidding...... good bit of useful information.
opps my bad..didnt realise I posted it twice....but if it helps then what the heck.
Fedup...
Great line !
Thought I was having a sudden attack of "delirium tremens" but then remembered I hadn't been drunk for over 24 hours.
Has Obama blamed Bush for this!
I'm surprised you haven't blamed Obama already
we felt the quake in massillon, ohio
Needless to say, we felt it here in Barberton too. I figured it was East Ohio Gas or somebody working in the ground... Pretty weird feeling.
Canton Ohio felt it too!!
Cincinnati OHIO felt it!
Figured a decent song by Canadian Band Great Big Sea might be fitting here: Its the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine... Here come apocalypse predictions... lol.
Better song: i felt the earth move, under my feet....
Wow, that was felt in a wide area! Just imagine if you'd REALLY had a big one! They are not fun.
Eddie Money: "she was shakin"
Lib50, there are two reasons as to why the quake was felt in such a large area. The first is that most of the U.S. is on one plate. California is on its own plate separate from the rest of the country (that is why people say that a "great quake" will put it in the ocean). The second reason was that it was shallow, not very deep in the earth. We felt it here in NY. We have also felt them in Ca. while visiting family there.
Wow, Barberton, I live about 10 miles south of you and didn't feel a thing!
We felt it in Youngstown, Ohio. It wasn't very strong but the building creaked and it felt like the roof was going to fall in.
I live in Medina and didn't feel it. Phooy!
Dizzy, you had a tiny one in Girard about 4am today. 2.2 per USGS
Felt in Delaware. We are going to be spending the next few days cleaning up this mess, if the hurricane doesn't do *more* damage. Not sure if a multifloored library is a good thing anymore.
Even better song: Jerry Lee Lewis banging his brains out on the piano, screaming, "We ain't fakin', a whole lot a shakin' goin' on!!!"
Come back, Mr. Earthquake... you forgot to swallow up all the criminals.
I agree...especially all the criminals, I mean, congressmen and women in D.C....
Sadly.....MOST of them are still off on another one of their many 30 day vacations...
Their all on vacation!
Maybe God's not too happy with our politicians.
Haha good joke, I bet no one else on here said the same exact thing fifty million times. Original!
God not too happy with alot of people!
I agree Terry, someone will turn this into the President's fault.
You're wrong, Obama will blame it on Bush. Then everyone will start pointing fingers. (SARC)
Robert - You are correct. Obama has NEVER accepted blame for anything anyway so why should the Dims worry? Give up on Hope, folks, it ain't comin'
It didn't take long for someone (terry) to blame the tea party, Right joan?
30 days vacation..... not , most federal employees have closer to 50
DOT, it goes to show you don't know much about federal employees. New feds get 13 days a year. Once you reach 15 years of employment, you get 26 days. I'm proud to be a fed who has worked 35 years. How long have you worked at the same job?
Thoughts and prayers are with you Easterners!
Terry-Ca I guess the republicans blaming Obama for the earthquake will be about the same as the democrats blaming Bush for the hurricanes a couple of years ago!!
Terry...
Did you forget that Mr. Obama isn't in the White House...he's staying at one of those "wealthy corporate jet owner's" palace on Martha's Vineyard...working on his golf game in his goofy little hat.
Stranger - on one blamed Bush for the Hurricanes, only the aftermath.
lets not forget the drought in Texas that is currently Perry's fault
Aha !!! I knew it just had to be his fault ! Lousy Texan !
DOT-1722169
You must be joking since this is an absolute lie.
Wildland Firefighter Mom
Thanks Firefighter Mom since you are absolutely correct. I was a proud fed employee too for 43 years!
Wasn't a quake after all. Seems Rush Limbaugh fell down.
We felt this quake all the way in Maine.
I felt it on the NC coast. As if Hurricane Irene weren't enough to worry me.
My mother felt it near Charlotte NC.
Office was shaking good in Pittsburgh, PA too.
Greetings from Colorado. Couldn't help but share LOL
I thought I felt it here in Sacramento, California, but then I realized it was probably my ex-wife getting out of her bed.
And Greetings from California too, kinda sitting out here smiling folks.
You guys can keep your earthquakes! I don't like them! lol
Felt it in northwestern Ohio!
Just a slight tremer
We had one down south once too, a couple years ago. I had just gone to bed when the house started shaking. I sat up and the bed was rattling, too, and I just remember thinking, should I stay here or get up. Well, it ended in just a bit. When I asked people I know about it the next day, they all thought I was nuts. Then again, they've ALWAYS thought that. lol
It was reported a few days later, that a small earthquake had occured in the gulf.
Maybe the infiltrators are blowing up the tunnels behind them. ;)
Finally something shakes things up in Washington....
my thoughts exactly!! (I wonder who mr o will blame for this!!)
Thank you, Mike V! I absolutely needed a belly laugh today. Sad that it's true.
no earthquake....it was obama's approval rating hitting rock bottom!
REALLY?
Now that is believeable
Thanks for the giggles American Citizen. too funny : )
Amen! And look at them, our FEARLESS leaders, all leaving work…even the Pentagon! In essence our LEADERS abandoned the ship while the rest of us keep on working. Geez! Makes you proud, eh?!
You all are To funny. LMAO.
<winks to all>
Ha!!! I LIKE it !!!!
TOUCHE MikeV!!!
Mike: +2 internets for you :)
WenchyJo: Maybe you keep protecting California from quakes and stop going other places...
I thought the jokes were funny myself. =D
I know ... it's all Bush's fault ...
Rare event for the east coast, hope everyone is fine. And Roger wtg in spreading the hate everywhere.
No Roger you are.
When I saw the headlines I thought I didn't feel a thing here in Seattle. Hope my family in Burke & Warrenton are okay and of course all the rest of you.
Roger you are just a nasty troll that needs to go back to your bridge.
I am glad to see nobody has got killed. It doesn't sound too bad but still I bet it rattled a few nerves.
As for Roger-3534237: Remember folks the Rules Of The Internet #14:
Someone give roger his meds.
Joyce from Washington - You guys don't get many earthquakes up there like we do down here in So-CAL, but, then, heard any rumblings from Mt. St. Helens lately?
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't understand that you were only 12. Take a clue from the headline, this is not about Obama, have a nice day though.
St. Helens is always rumbling. But the rumblings are just small enough that it's not felt outside the immediate vicinity. Still, it's been only about 5 years since the last eruption of note, so who knows...
I heard that the quake shook Obama back to the Left!
Our office shook here in Greenwood SC!!! That was my first earthquake! That was WILD!!!
Epic Fail. Earthquake forgot to swallow up all the criminals in DC.
Mother Earth: "Problem?"
It was aiming for Bachmann and missed.
Maybe this is the first of the "shake-ups" to be felt in DC.
Where's Pat Robertson when he's needed?
We'll let you know if that time ever comes.
Wonder if all this freaky weather and goings on has anything to do with the Mayan calender that expires in 2012
greetings from california. welcome to our world!
Dude I will never live on the West Coast!!! My house rocked from side to side with my wife and kids.. I thought the roof was collasping!!! Gotta get a change of underware!! Maryland!!
Hello from Roanoke, VA... we had the shakes here for sure!
Haha! I live on the west coast and let me tell you how casual some people are about our small quakes, I for one sit through a mild quake while going about my business. No quake is going to interrupt my day!
On a serious note, I really did sit though a quake, however I did walk for cover.
You can have it. haha
This will teach people to make fun of California. The east coast get's everything: Blizzards, tornados, wildfires, and hurricanes, one of which is going to hit the east coast later this week.
Didn't feel a thing here in Sacramento, CA. All that bedrock on the East Coast makes even a baby earthquake spread it's impact further.
Use to reside in the OC - I miss these little quivers. Nothing keeps the martini as fresh as being shaken by Mother Earth herself!
Silly comparison.
Compared to snow storms, hurricanes, below freezing temperatures, and blazing summers in the east coast states, California has it really easy.
Californians freak out about everything from a tiny earthquake to lightning strikes. Oh please.
Rain can excuse a person from work in California. That's embarassing.
@Damien
My dog started barking like crazy...oh, oh...Earthquake!!!
it is just to scarey. tornadoes and now earthquakes....you just never know what to expect anymore. north carolina
sorry A mom -but really...hundreds of thousands evacuated over a 5.3? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Nancy from LA
Nancy - And they shut down all three major airports in New York????? Have a nice day.
Mike from S.D.
Thanks California! From Maryland!! :)
west, I will trade with anyone who wants a hurricane...... one is coming my way...LOL...jk
Greetings from the east coast. *Flipping the bird*
Hi again from CA, you guys keep the fracking up and you will be just like us soon, rock and roll!
Yeah, but the West coast isn't built out of 200 year old masonry and unreinforced steel skyscrapers!
Get the facts...airports weren;t closed or shut down. Flights were delayed until they inspected the runways and towers. That isn't an over reaction. And it certainly doesn't translate to a shut down. The article never even said that. Where do you get the leap from a delay to a closure?
This just in: news of the earthquake on the east coast triggered a spontaneous brawl among hundreds of Raiders and 49'ers fans...
Would you like our snow?
@Muteheretic..
So Dude - Is that some kind of dance?
Evacuated for a 5.3 LOL I have slept through those. Now the Loma Prieta that was a quake, did the most damage since the 1906 quake.
A Veteran,
Didn't see your post until later in the day.
We felt it near Philadelphia...building shook...weird.
It was the gun fight at the basketball game
Yeah...no...that was not an earthquake in Killadelphia. That was just one of your out of control kid mobs running around the city out of control!
haha i had to laugh at tht a little but yea the quake wasnt tht bad in philly i thought people were doin work outside lol i jus looked outside then went back to my business nothin major...
LOL. Moron.)
we felt the quake in ohio
It was weird, scary part is that a couple of 8.3s hit ohio hit in the past.
we felt it in Ironton Ohio. Really scary I go to Ohio University Southern and the whole building shook.
The building I work at in Columbia SC shook. Never felt anything like it.
Nothing damaged where I am in Southern Montgomery County
Common tidal wave, head straight for washington DC...
Indeed, that place has needed an enema for a very long time.
Patriotic Americans I see!!
Must be teabaggers!
You had to make it a gay thing didn't you?
in garfield nj our whole entire 3 story building just shook
We also felt the quake near Detroit.
**UPDATE** It's been confirmed that what Michigan felt was the effects of Ndamukong Suh blasting some undrafted free agent running back at Lions practice.
It's all good here.
That was the stampede on the Welfare office!
I live in Chicago, and I thought that I felt my apartment shaking a bit a little while ago.
That was actually the wind coming out of the White Sox sails as the Tigers take charge of the AL Central Division.
Oceanic - Funny!
My laboratory shook, and I'm about 399 miles south of the epicenter. What the hell? There aren't any fault lines in that area that I know of.
Angryguy,
That was hilarious. As a chemist myself I agree. Kudos!
No, a scientist would have said he lived 642.128 kilometers south!
Only if he was one of them illegal alien scientists we keep hearing about takin' our jobs....
Sorry, wrong vine....
WE felt it all the way down here in Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington, NC. What a bizarre feeling!
Crazy!
The terrorists have activated the Earthquake machine, it's all over...game over man, game over
Was it Bill Paxton who had that great line in Aliens?
Yeah right it was obviously the Chinese. Or maybe Iran since they just got done loading up their underground nuke bunker. lol
Dennis -
Yes, it was - as Hudson. (What a way to go...alien chow.)
No, no you idiots. Didn't you hear Obama's latest press statement? "It was obviously Bush's fault."
SP,
I am surprised that conservatives are not blaming the earthquake on Muslims yet.
Oh so funny. NOT.
Operative word: "yet"
No, you heard wrong, Obama said the quake was centered on the Bush Fault.
Of course, the Bush Fault was supposed to be in Wisconsin, but George couldn't spell it, so it ended up in Virgina instead.
I'm surprised that the end of the world nuts haven't come out screaming, "The sky is falling! The apocalypse is upon us! Repent now! It's the end of the world as we know it! The Rapture is here!"
Indigo,
That was funny. And I like Bush (a little)
But in a response to everyone claiming it is someone else's fault, It was not Bush's fault, it wasn't Obama's fault, it's not the muslims, tea party, etc. Anyone posting that it was, is either making a joke or just dumb.
it's me
it was my fault
i made the earth quake
washington DC evacuating !........ANY EXCUSE FOR THEM NOT TO WORK IN D.C.
bwahahahah...congress will annouce the need to extend their official vacation due this craddle rocker!
It`s good to know that in the event of a real national emergency we will be able to count on our leaders to abandon ship and run at the first sign of trouble, what a bunch of self serving douchebags!
....washington DC evacuating .....no one was there to leave
Yeah, why does everyone always want to evacuate? If stuff is falling from your building, it's probably no safer outside with no cover. Get under your desk or in a doorway or small room like the bathroom or something.
American Citizen -
There's always some poor slob manning the phones or moping the floors...
Emptying out DC would be good for the economy.
Anywhere can be earthquake country. Guess we'll stay in California.
Good idea, love California earthquakes and all! I'm curious to see how badly these people overreact :)
You are safer at Yellowstone!
Bob - Until that Super Volcano under it blows.
