That's the only way she's going to get paid for her ordeal. The media is being carefully fed the story to promote her book so she can be set for the rest of her life. If you've got a better idea about how a single, uneducated mother can support herself I'm sure she'd like to hear it.
She already got 20 million from the state of California for their gross incompetence. She does not need the media's blood money. reasonable interest from the money would easily put her in the upper 2% of income families.
I'm sure one reason she wrote the book is that getting it out on paper is therapeutic. The media's job is to report news. Fortunately, it is rare for someone to be kidnapped and held prisoner for 18 yrs but this is news worthy. People make money off their life's story all the time. I would rather see her make money than trash like octomom & c. anthony. (hopefully she can use it to get great therapy and build a happy life for her family).
My heart truly goes out to this poor young woman. I will say that our country does handle these things differently than other countries. Last year or the year before a story came out about a girl would been locked in a bunker under her house built by her father to hide her there for about 20 yrs. He too had children w/ her (I think 5) 1 or 2 of which died and he'd cremated them in the furnace. She was moved to an undisclosed location w/ her children for medical and mental care and we haven't heard anything about the woman since.
A pox on people who harm others like this. Garrido and his wife's crime are so inhumane that they should be left to the wolves.
Unfortunately, all the money in the world could never make up for what this young woman had to go through. 20 million, 200 million, it doesn't really matter.
It's utterly horrible to think that money makes up for this tragedy. It doesn't. The only thing Jaycee can do now is move on with her life--and that she has done. She had to adapt to living with a couple that raped her and terrorized throughout her years in captivity.
I cannot imagine going through something like that, but if adapting helped Jaycee survived the horrors, I say more power to Jaycee...
As for the money, Jaycee will know what to do with it--and that's helping her and her children move on. Bravo to her!
Starseeker, who are you to say 20mil is enough, especially withe her children's future to think about? Would you leave money on the table? She's basically got one shot at maximizing her income for a lifetime. Like any star athlete with a short earnings window she's been wisely counseled to maximize her income now while she can to support herself and provide for her children's future. It may even be cathartic for her to do this. I'm sure mental health counselors are involved. Probably the best with that kind of money involved.
I watched the TV show on this last Sunday and didn't feel the media had exploited Jaycee Dugard or her family. The show was produced extremely well without exposing the Dugard children or devulging personal information. Some time has gone by since Ms. Dugard and her daughters were freed from this monster so I think she is now ready to tell her story on her own terms. Sure the media will exploit a story if allowed but in this case I think the Dugard's were incredibly smart to stay secluded for an extended period of time so they managed the media attention from the start and have it under control. I also believe that this is such a horric case that there would be a backlash toward the media if it were to go after this story with disregard to the Dugard's privacy. Also the TV show and ramped up interest in this story now is because Ms. Duggard has a book out that was just released this week so the TV show is undoubtedly tied to the book release. This is certainly more appropriate and less intrusive than a book signing tour which tells me again that Ms. Dugard is speaking out on her own terms.
Perhaps you misunderstood my post. nowhere did I say 20 million was enough.
If she want's to maximize her income I have no issue with that however, I do think the media is notoriously exploitative an looking to maximize their own income and are more than willing to use her to do it. There is a bit of double edged sword there and she should be very careful because the media will no more look out for her than Mr Garrido.
It's a symbiotic relationship, starseeker. Both her and the media will profit greatly from her story. A good media agent will make sure she makes out well. From the looks of it, she has good representation.
I watched the TV show on this last Sunday and didn't feel the media had exploited Jaycee Dugard or her family. The show was produced extremely well without exposing the Dugard children or devulging personal information.
The media has (for now) pretty well perfected the illusion of caring and respectfulness (through the low tone speech trick among others) all the while exacting their price. It's a very slick production staged show nothing more.
Money can't make up for what she suffered, but she and her daughters could certainly benefit from good council, which is exactly what money can buy. They will also need to live fairly private lives now, because of all the fame and notoriety a story like this is sure to bring. Her daughters will be better off at private schools or with tutors, and in a reasonably secure house, possibly a gated property, all of which cost money. Once the girls get old enough, they may want to go to a good college, and do you have any idea how much that costs anymore? There are so many practical things she can use that money for. And after living in a tent for 18 years, I certainly won't begrudge her a few impractical luxuries if she chooses to spend on them.
i think its amazing that she even wants to talk about it. if u had been locked up for 18 years and repeatedly raped, forced to have 2 kids with this man and live in makeshift housing/tents, i can bet that u won't want to talk about it. every time she talks or writes this down, she is reopening a huge wound and for her to be a ble to do that is amazing. for instance, so many rape/kidnapping cases won't talk about their ordeals or even testify because they are either scared or they don't want to revisit their ordeal. every time they talk about this, they are going back to the room, the time, their feelings, and their pain, u and i can't even begin to imagine what is going through her head as she is speaking or writing down the events that took place. she is incredibly emotionally strong. i agree that the 20 million she got will never sufice for what she has to live with every day.
Phillip Garrido was sentenced last month to 431 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and rape in the Dugard case. Nancy Garrido was sentenced to 36 years to life after pleading guilty to similar charges.
So Nancy kidnaps a child and holds her and abuses her for 19 or 20 years, and only gets 36 years to life, (19 to 20 years with good behavior).
The problem I see is that we the taxpayers are paying for the gross negligence of the people who were empowered to resolve this matter and find her. WHY? The people who should be paying for this are the offending couple and the "PEOPLE" who allowed this to happen and continued to let this happen. THEY SHOULD BE THE PEOPLE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR TRYING TO MAKE AMENDS. The state is broke. The people individually and collectively from the person in charge of all the various agencies, to the people who trained the investigators to the investigators are the ones who have to pay. They should be wiped out, their savings, their houses, their social security, their pensions everything.
I as a citizen and taxpayer should not be held responsible and neither should any of you. There is no doubt in my mind that 99.99% of you did not want this to happen or wished it to continue. So why should our taxes be used? If the population was in favor of this horrible crime then yes, but we all detest what happened and life in prison and only 36 years for the woman is a mockery. Free food and board and he will be on permanent parole for the rest of his life. With jail overcrowding, his wife may be out in 12 years. The woman and her parents should sue the kidnappers wipe them out financially and everyone who missed finding her. THAT IS JUSTICE!
And this should reinforce the need for permanent life sentences without parole for sex abusers, rapists and pedophiles. The recidivism rate is astronomical over 80%.
from now on,,i work for cash,,no tax being taken from me to pay the slime that took that video..if any one that should pay the victim,,it should be her captors...taking away her life and her innocents...my heart goes out to that innocent girl,,god be with her
Julio, you are not going to pay out anymore in taxes because of this. The taxes you pay go to law enforcement regardless of what they need it for. Aside from that, I find your attitude about it quite selfish. I'm sure glad this has not been the common attitude from the beginning of civilization, because no human would have survived with everyone only looking out for #1.
Witch doctors in Africa exist to get people like you out of the village. They understand that the tribe will not survive if they don't help each other out.
Capital punishment should be the consequence for rape convictions. Had that been the case, then Garrido would never have had the opportunity to abduct Ms. Dugard. It seems that the man did nothing with his life other than victimize women and prey upon young girls. If he had been treated like the rabid dog he is in 1976 (when he was convicted of rape and kidnapping), none of this would have happened.
While I understand your feelings, I think it would be very ill-advised to put rapists to death for this one reason: there are quite a number of supposed rapists who have been exonerated by more modern forensic tests.
Now what I'd like to see is this: when rapists, pedophiles and the like are released from prison, let's have them move in next door to the judges - defense lawyers - and psychologists that released them or next door to the families of the aforementioned people. let's see how many are released then !
I think life without ever receiving the possibility of parole should be handed down! My children were sexually abused and I fought tooth and nail to see to it this monster stays behind bars. He served 12 years! A lifetime of of pain and heartache for my children and only 12 years punishment for this creep! Most rapists and or pedophiles have mental illnesses and many are repeat offenders once released from prison! Offenders need to be held accountable for their crimes, and as far as I am concerned, when it involves harming, abusing, molesting children, I will pay the taxes to see to it they NEVER have the chance to rear their ugly heads in society again!
I say give their cellmate a broomstick and let them have a party!!
I am all for capital punishment for rapists. JEB has a valid point and hence it should be reserved for when the evidence is overwhelming against the perps - such as in the case surrounding this story. If there is strong DNA and other evidence then we shoule execute.
I don't believe in capital punishment because of the way its implemented (its arbitrary [which, as said by the supreme court, make it "cruel and unusual" and in violation of the 8th ammendment], its an inneffective deterent thats incredible cost takes away from other effective crime preventing activities, and factors such as the financial well being and race of the accused play a huge part whether they are convicted) but I do have to say that I believe certain rape cases and kidnapping cases should result (depending on the severity, the age of the victim, etc) with life in prison without possibility of parole. If anyone deserves to stay behind bars for the rest of their miserable lives, its child abusers. There are, in my opinion, some things worse than death...
And on the another note, only $20 million?! 18 years held in captivity because of inept parole officers and an innefective law system, and she only recieves $20 million? Incredible...
I am inclined to agree with you in this regard. But the U.S. Constitution includes the "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" law. But what is Cruel and Unusual?
Most certainly, Duggard was exposed to cruel and unusual punishment at the hands of her captors. Perhaps, in these cases the injured party should be allowed to decide their rapist/captors/slavery/abusers fate? Gariddo has broken so many laws, that one is spoiled for choice as to where to begin.
Taking this in a purely clinical context, we know that all known sex offenders are just crimes waiting to happen. They can no more control their urges than an alcoholic or cocaine addict. They are very, very clever in concealing their true wants. So, what to do?
The sex offenders need to be given three choices:
permanent incarceration
castration
death
In light of the danger that these criminals' behaviors, and capacity for future rapes, etc., I do not believe that these three choices are cruel or unusual. What about the rights of the victims?
It wouldn't have happened with his previous crimes, but in a few states he would be eligible for the death penalty for Jaycee. Louisiana allows the death penalty for rape of a child under 12.
Believe it or not this was actually tried in George back in the 1920's or 1930's.
Making Rape a Capital offence was defeated and the largest critics were women's groups. Groups which were during prohibition every bit as active if not more so in political life then they are today.
This was done because rape is a "personal one on one" crime. That means that it's usually done with only the victim and the rapist present. If capital punishment was the default then there would be little incentive to leave the woman alive after the ordeal. Because the result is the same, if caught, either way.
I can't say their argument then changes very much to today's standards. You'd likely end up with more dead women in the street then fewer rapes or rapists if it was a capital offense. Not that the idea isn't pleasing, but the reality of implementation could have some very harsh unintended consequences.
Goes to the old saying: "Nothing new under the sun."
You cannot apply capital punishment to personal crimes less than murder.
If the penalty is the same whether you rape a person or whether you kill them, the rapist is actually incentivized to kill their victim (witness).
Rene278 notes that a handful of states do have statutes that allow execution for heinous rapes, but they can't really be used. I believe that the particular Louisiana law you are referring to was struck down by the Supreme Court when they tried.
If there is strong DNA and other evidence then we shoule execute.
Where will this line be drawn? We all know open-and-shut cases when we see them, and usually newsvine calls for elimination of all due process for the accused in those cases. Will you be writing the statutes that establish just what makes an open-and-shut case? 3 witnesses? A video? I just think the idea of changing the process based on cases with "better evidence" is untenable.
Go ahead and indulge your bloodlust and draconian law fantasies folks (that always end up sounding fascist) but realize that your emotional response may not be a rational response.
Great point. I never thought of that and I am all for killing rapist scum. But, why leave a witness? A death penalty or even castration (same thing in the male perspective) would create more innocent deaths.
If California were more like Texas, then maybe so, but capital punishment would not be a deterrent in the Peoples Republic of California where there are over 700 prople on Death Row. We fought for the return of capital punishment and even removed a California Supreme Court justice (Rose Bird) to regain the right of Californians to be free from criminals like this nutjob, but liberals keep twarting the will of the people by keeping them alive. All the while costing us hundreds of millions. No wonder these criminals thrive here and the state is broke.
How is the death penalty arbitrary? How is it cruel and unusual punishment? Here's what I think. If there is total and absolute proof of guilt, DNA tested twice, admission of guilt, etc. and the perpetrator is not denying what they have done, the crime is vicious and premeditated or is committed against a child, then that murdering, raping, abusing POS should be treated the way they treated the victim. No whining about civil rights, no crap. They weren't worried about civil rights when they committed the crime so too late to worry about them now.
This isn't any other sex offenders fault. This is the California Police Deptments fault. I don't see why they should pay for something they had nothing to do with. First, they should take all the people that peed in public, had sex with their girlfriends and found out she was underaged, and guys who were falsely accused by some woman that wanted revenge or wanted custody of their kids off the registry. That would give the cops a chance to monitor the ones that are dangerous.
With a sex offence you are guilty upon accusation. Why should these people that are innocent have to pay the price for a crime they did not commit?
Sandy, no one wants to see the guy who peed in an alley on the lists, nor the 18 year old sleeping with his 16 year old girlfriend, but when you are talking a man with a record of kidnap and rape of other minor children and women being allowed back on the street again.. just end him, and save future victims.
I think you miss the point entirely, if a rapist can be executed for the same crime as homicide, what's to keep them from killing their rape victim? Nothing, they'd stand a better chance of getting away with the crime by silencing their victim. Just lock them up and throw away the key, better yet, brand them with an easily identifiable pedofile/rapist outfit where the cheeks easily unsnap so other inmates can return the favor.
a handful of states do have statutes that allow execution for heinous rapes, but they can't really be used. I believe that the particular Louisiana law you are referring to was struck down by the Supreme Court when they tried.
It is on the books, although the Supreme Court can overturn the conviction. It does not apply to all rapes; it only covers rape of a child under the age of 12. It isn't really used; the chances are so high they will be killed by other prisoners it's not worth the expense of a capital conviction.
The court went beyond the question in the case to rule out the death penalty for any individual crime — as opposed to “offenses against the state,” such as treason or espionage — “where the victim’s life was not taken.”
When you look at how many states do NOT have truth in sentencing laws, and how soon criminals get out based on 'good behavior' this sentence makes sense...if they cut it in 1/2 for good behavior, he still won't outlive it.
This case shows what's wrong with California and the Justice system all in one swoop.
A 431 year sentence signals immediately that reality and real numbers don't have meaning in the California legal system. They likely have littering fines set at millions of dollars but you have to hire an attorney and go through a costly legal proceeding to find it's actually a $20 fine.
And when numbers mean nothing then why not empty the treasury to solve all the problems. Woman's life ruined by incompetence- cut her a check for $20 million. Does the California government even HAVE $20 million? I thought they were about to go bankrupt, fire teachers, cut scholarships and let prisoners go because they ran out of money last year?
And again with the money, rather than put a bullet in this man and wife's head (cost: $1.00, tops), they would rather play nice-nice and keep them alive for life on the taxpayer's dime. $35K/year each for at least 20 years: $1,400,000, which doesn't include the defending and prosecuting attorney fees, clerk fees, court recorder fees, etc. Glad that money isn't going to helping the handicapped or elderly. Smart trade.
And then we get to the root of the issue. A rapist/kidnapper simply should be shot in the head. The state of CA doesn't take crime seriously so the criminals run over good people. Rape and kidnapping: let them go for 'good behavior'? Thank you CA for taking this girl's life just so you could play nice-nice with the scum of the earth. The only people who win in these 'give them a second chance' 'don't send an innocent man to jail no matter what the cost' are future victims. The Petit family in CT could tell you all about it except their captors (burglary/kidnapping/rapists) burned them alive after robbing them, beating them and raping them.
$20 million and 431 years is almost as criminal as the crime itself. Thank you ACLU.
The number DOES mean something and that IS his actual sentence, the arrangement of his plea bargain was that he would NEVER see life outside a jail again, the judge issued his penalties to run consecutive and not concurrent so he would have NO chance of parole. Personally, I think that 431 years or life is lenient, he should not be allowed to breathe on this planet after his beyond despicable acts!
If he were tried in this county, they would have plea bargained to a "misdemeanor violation of a city ordinance" and let him go home. It happened here when a guy repeatedly sexually molested girls 7 and 10. I think public execution should be reinstated.
On this I agree 100% with Movingout... we'll keep non-violent criminals in prison and let the dirt-bags go.. Then if we actually give a dirt-bag a life sentence we treat them better than our Veterans.. spending more on them than those who actually stood up for our freedoms.... Put Potheads in treatment instead of prison.. costs of treatment-5-9 thousand dollars a year compared to keeping them in prison at 45 thousand a year.. And end the dirt-bag rapists, murderers, and child abusers if the proof is there.
I am thinking that if this is the kind of incompetent work public sector employees do, maybe we should shut down and revamp the entire system from the ground up.
Trouble is that 98% of all government workers in every venue are either incompetent, unethical, lack integrity, or are just flat out liars and theives. Is that redundant?
It's not incompetence, it's work-overload for a system that likes to imprison. Do you know how many people the federal (and Garrido was under the FEDERAL system, not the California system, btw) parole officers have to visit? Do you really think they hire enough people to cover all the parolees? Just the same as the child welfare system. All over-worked for an overloaded system and people wonder why so many kids fall through the cracks. What we need to do is streamline the system, get rid of the for-profit prison system (that feed off the taxpayer teet at an exorbitant cost to the taxpayers with no better results than the state system) and get rid of the ridiculous drug laws that tie up our cops and prisons and the rest of our legal system. But, most important, we need to get rid of the greedy "for-profit" system that is springing up before it gets far worse than it is now.
This kind of mind-set is exactly why we can't get better government in this country. You need to read "The Wrecking Crew" and then you will understand why government doesn't work. My mother was a career civil servant. My husband and I were career civil servants. We all of us worked harder at our jobs than anyone I know in the private sector except possibly self-employed businessmen running their own SMALL business. In my job I caught and corrected plenty of mistakes made by those wonderful private sector employees that would have financially harmed hundreds of their fellow employees. I NEVER left the office with a clean desk because there was ALWAYS more work than I could get done. My job, thankfully, did not involve supervising potentially dangerous individuals, but I'm quite certain that federal parole officers always have more work than they can get done as well. Is there waste and incompetence in government? Yep, but not so often where the rubber meets the road - its farther up the ladder than THAT. Thanks to the GOP mindthink, we have contracted out so much work that you don't even know WHO is a government employee any more. My experience has been that the contracting out costs the government on average 15% more than having public employees perform the work AND their is LESS accountability. These parole officers may have been incompetent. But they may also have been either contract employees OR just plain overworked. This should never have happened, but since you don't know the facts, please don't rush to judgement.
missouriandie, I have yet to ever see the private sector take on government jobs and do it cheaper. They ALWAYS do it far more expensively because they know that they can jack up the price and they will always get paid. Case in point, the military. Boeing, Northrup, etc......those guys are forever over budget and never on time because they will milk a project for ever last taxpayer dime. Why? Because the Pentagon will always pay. Anytime a private company takes over a public function, the price ALWAYS goes up! Things like water, trash, electricity, etc., are taken over by private companies from the municipalities, the price always goes up about fifteen percent and the service always sucks. Private prisons are the worst. There is no incentive to lower the crime rate because how are they going to make a profit off of empty beds? And they pay their employees crap wages and the conditions are horrid. And, to add insult to injury, these private prisons take the prisoners and use them as slave labor for things like telemarketing. How would you like to be giving your credit card information to a convict? All the while these private prison corporations are pocketing these tidy profits made off of taxpayer dollars and slave wages!
private contractors working on govt contracts are not a fair comparison...
the govt sets/establishes the rules and methods and the policies of how the private contractor is to function and what they are to provide...
every single nut and bolt, fuse, piece of metal, wire, plastic, everything gets tested to extreme... even if it was tested on the last project... it gets tested again... why? for accountibility... each project is separate.. and has separate people administering it.
so, if the govt wants one item, the contractor has to prepare a volume of paper to describe it and how it was made, and include a dozen samples for the representatives to examine... and if a single person questions something, then they have to send it back and the process is started over again... so, although the contract was for one 'toilet seat', which could be bought at home depot, the contractor had to buy a couple dozen of them...
I don't think the media is exploiting her--it's a legitimate news story, and it has shed light on the poor job of the parole officers in investigating people like Garrido. Perhaps now there will be a more thorough search and different questions asked of offenders.
Its unreal what parole officers dont do, having a degree in criminal justice they are not ethical or legal by any means. Their excuse too many cases that they just dont care. My ex-husband who was on parole was able to beat, lie, and steal everything of value from me in our short 6 week marriage and his parole officer said he is one of my good cases he didnt have time to look into it. Shortly after leaving we found out he was actually sleeping with 13yr olds. He was released from parole shortly after. He can see our 1yr baby girl alone since he only beat me while I was pregnant and not her. The justice system does nothing for victims, the offenders are given every chance and right in the book.
Snowmommy: I can't even fathom that your ex would be allowed to see your daughter alone. If he has been sleeping with 13 yr olds, and if he beat you when you were pregnant, IMO he should not even be allowed supervised visits with your baby. After all, when he was beating you while your were pregnant, he was also assaulting his own child and could have cost her her life. Someone in your county is not doing their job. You should go to the media with this story and let them do an investigative report on it, that's what they do best.
The state of California is paying Ms Duggard $20,000,000.00 because of ineptness by unnamed paroll officers..........My question is what if any punishment has been metted out to the parole officers.......Did they lose their jobs?.........Did they sacrifice their pensions.........Did they commit criminal negligence through their ineptness?.........Are they responsible for paying the $20,000,000.00 to Ms duggard or is it only the innocent hardworking people of California who must pay this money?
No, I am sure that the payment will be completely on the taxpayer. If they fire everyone who was involved or remove pensions (assuming some people retired over the years) it will show how inept the system really is. By making one mass payment to her, they hope that people will stop sniffing around and the true depth of the problem will never see the light of day. To top things off, I am sure they will tax her on the money that was given.
California has the State Victim's Compensation Board... it is a taxpayer-funded commission with an annual budget to compensate the victims of violent crimes. Children whose parents were murdered, etc. I believe this was one of the last cases considered that year, and they agreed pretty readily to give over everything they had left.
Either way, anyone in charge of monitoring his "parole" should sacrifice their pensions, their positions, and go back to working for Walmart or Target or McDonald's some other entry-level type job. It's sickening, the level of continued incompetence by so many people. Garrido doesn't seem like a rocket scientist, this shouldn't have been too hard to detect. Wouldn't you be looking out a window to the back yard, and say "Gee Phil, What do you have going on with all the locked up bunker buildings and piles of trash back there?"
Even if he had some homeless people camping back there, its still a violation to lie about his living arrangements, he should have still been yanked back for that. They didn't need much of a reason.
This is very newsworthy though - the real story is the incompetence of the correctional system. Now California is getting ready to release another 40,000 felons for these bozos to "monitor", because we failed to meet even basic federal living standards in our prisons - something the other 49 states have figured out how to do. Whether it is providing education for our kids, or lack thereof, or imprisoning them later as a consequence for the other incompetence, California has really failed its citizens & taxpayers. Our dysfunctional, ultra-liberal, feel-good politics continues to create bigger & bigger messes for the taxpayer to clean up.
California prison officials mistakenly released an estimated 450 violent inmates as part of a new program designed to reduce overcrowding in state prisons, according to a new report from the California Inspector General's office.
The inmates were let out on unsupervised parole as part of a new program implemented in January 2010 to reduce the number of prisoners returning to state penitentiaries on technical parole violations. The program was only supposed to apply to low-risk inmates.
Hope this guy is put in with the general population in prison and not given a private "suite"...they'll take care of him and get him off the taxpayer's dime...
In other news, a man in Washington state who is defending himself in his child-porn case, is being allowed to view the evidence (kid porn tapes, some made by him) because they fear a mistrial if he isn't allowed to review the evidence against him.
No wonder this country is standing on the edge of the abyss...we've lost our minds...
Don't worry. The "ChoMo" protective suites aren't that much safer than GenPop when you consider how easily the guards are inclined to look in another direction when an attack occurs.
The worst thing you can be in prison is a Child Molester. The other inmates hate you, but the guards hate you almost as much. A good friend of mine was in prison a few years back and said it was very easy to take your frustrations and anger out on a "ChoMo" that was supposedly housed in a protected wing of the State Penitentiary. If you were having a bad day or had a bad phone conversation with the wife back home, you could easily find a ChoMo to take it out on, and the guards would just look in the other direction. Conveniently, prison guards can't see everything at all times.
My friend said that rape and sodomy of these "ChoMos" DOES occur, but more often they are simply constant targets of brutal physical assaults; a "ChoMo" can't go anywhere without assuming they are about to be beaten within an inch of their lives every time they turn a corner, and ChoMos are attacked so often that they rarely even act surprised after they are gurney-ed off to the medical facilities.
Tax payers should not have had to pay for a trial much less a lifetime of three squares, gym time and all the cable he can watch. He took an innocent childs life, tortured her, took from her a child hood that can never be attained, raped and created two new lives that were held in capitivity. Those are the nicest things that we know of her experience. He is not a human and she be killed like the animal he is, along with the wife that enabled him to live out his fantasies! Not the electric chair, a good old fashion rope and a sturdy tree. I will kick the chair out from under him if given the opportunity. It should be carried out today, not 20 years down the road and a lot of good money wasted on the animals.
I would feel sorry for the tree. Honestly, I would put him somewhere in the desert and let him slowly die over 3-5 days. People can be there to make sure he doesn't get away and taunt him (heck, his wife as well) with water and food, as I am sure that is what he did to Dugard. Let him experience just a small portion of the torture that she endured. It is either that or tie him to a tree, make a small slit on a certain part of his anatomy, and release the fire ants.
I only hope that the money will help her to get all the treatment she needs and provide security and safety for her children. The criminals should choke on chicken bones and be thrown to the wolves or pigs for dinner, save us some money.
Why are the taxpayers being asked to foot the bill for this inept government in Calif.? What a cost savings to have used lethal injection to erradicate this vermin. I do hope that these parole Clowns do not get a six figure pension when they retire.
The other piece missing from this story: Jaycee's stepfather! He was considered a suspect for quit a while and that lead to the divorce with Jaycee's mother. How may lives were destroyed here?
The former stepfather and an aunt were the only members of the family that met the press when the story broke. The mother and sister went into seclusion with Jaycee.
So taxpayers have to pay for his prison costs which could last for years. Heck, save $$$, let him go free ..... a lynch-mob can handle this very inexpensively.
How about if you are mistaken for the man and are accidentally hung by the overly emotional, irrational and blood thirsty lynchmob that you advocate?
Neanderthal justice- America is a good place for that. You go to other countries and start wars trying tto impose your brand of democracy yet you advocate the outright murder of a person accused/convicted of a crime. what kind of double standard does America live by or don't any of you know?
Your television and radio and movies are infected with blood, gore and sex and then you wonder why people act like this man did? Your whole society, ethics and morals are one big contradiction.
You bemoan people accused of murder yet your citizens demand the right to own multiple guns of all types so that they can kill a person even if they just THINK they are being threatened or in danger. Perfect case in point is the pharmacist that had to shoot an unconscious robber 5 more time after shooting him in the head initially.
Samllstuff-Interesting how you combine things that have nothing to do with each other. America is based on personal responsibility and its when people get things mixed up that wires get crossed. Our TV shows are seen all over the world so its not just us.
Liberals have made it so we don't have morals anymore because its always someone else's fault. Its much eaiser to list excuses than own what you do or believe.
Guns don't kill people-people kill people. Our constition allows us to have guns in order to assure that we will always have the final say in our government. You disarm the people-you take away their power. If everyone had a gun and knew how to use it the crime rate would fall so fast it would become not worth mentioning. If a criminal knew the place they wanted to rob was armed don't you think it would make them think twice?
Jaycee Duggard is a courageous young woman who is an inspiration to many people. Despite the atrocities done to her, her ambition to take back her life and live it to the fullest with her children is absolutely amazing. I wish her the very best life has to offer her and her family. Twenty million is small compensation considering the level of failure by the probation dept. and court system of Ca.
I say he gets what he gave out. Dress him up like a little girl stick him in a prision with the other child rapists and let him go through what she went through for 18 years and when he is either used up or the 18 years went by then we stone him to death. This kind of person deserves no regard as well as no time extra on this earth than he already has gotten. It may no be my tax money but I have family in Cali they shouldnt have to pay to have sum jerk off like this live.
OMG! More American civility and common sense on display. This the kind of crap people focus on when your whole nation is about to default on it's national debt and you are going down the tubes faster than a 3rd world nation.
Hey small stuff. What do you want me to do about the debt crisis the government got me into. I cant change any of that at this moment so guess what if we can get rid of extra tax payment off our plate then i say we do it. What are you doing about the crap where ever your from is dealing with? And you definitely cant say you have nothing going down cause every country has issues. So before you presume to tell me what i am and am not doing because i give any opinion about some jerk who took 18 years of a girl back off. As for what country your from. Why does it matter what we care about at the time of a crisis like this? Its our issue not yours that is if you arent from America.
GymnastSince88 I am from Texas and ex-military. Your emotional sentiment is wasted on me as is your retort. I have seen enough revenge killing to fill 10 dumpsters and it didn't solve a darn thing.
Your original remarks remind me of immature and irrational behavior patterns that I have seen before. Revenge may be sweet to you but to me and others it is an admission of the further erosion of morality and values of this nation and some of it's members. Sixteen states in America have banned capital punishment, even wonder why?
If you were accused of this crime and a crowd came after you with a rope, butcher knives or a car battery and cables, without having full knowledge of the facts involving your case I expect you would say that was acceptable and just to save about .79 cents a day which is the average daily cost of criminal detention per person based on 2010 studies.
These people who may have perpetraited this crime obviously are sick, maybe criminally insane. That does not give you the moral right to call for their extermination by hideous and barbaric means. Then to me you are no different than they are.
My error the cost I should have written is not .79 cents. It should be noted to be an average $59.00 per day and that is an for city, county, state, federal, military and work release detention. In house arrest, house detention or weekend only detention is NOT included in that average for 2010.
You know what I started writing a response and realized it was absolutely pointless to fight with someone who has no regard for the fact that he took away 18 years of her life and doesn't deserve to die for what he did. I will never know what you went through in war so i couldn't even imagine but to talk to someone who took my original statement literally is pretty ridiculous. I do think he should go on death row but to know that he will live every day in jail going through hell (cause we all know they hate child molesters/rapists) well suffice
The City of Antioch also has a 'Neighborhood Integrity' division. Not once were they called because this department only works for Developers and Builders who want to confiscate someone's property so they can build huge houses too close together all in the great name of profit.
So despite the putrid condition of this home the Neighborhood Integrity was NEVER called.
And even if the parole division were 'privatized' we would have gotten the exact same result remember there are 'escapes' from privatized prisons...
There was only 'one' complaint from a woman who heard children playing in the back yard since it was an unincorporated area of Antioch the Contra Costa Sheriff 'investigated' and came to the conclusion that it was a 'baseless accusation due to some personal vendetta' and dismissed because it was the only complaint.
In other words the Sheriff erroneously thought just like the 'conservative' posters on this board that there was no probable cause and let it go.
He did not have a hidden agenda unlike the folks on this board who want to privatize law enforcement due to unionized labor...
$20 million is not enough. Skinning this bastard alive is not enough.. I hope this brave young women and her children can move beyond this nightmare and have a decent, "normal" happy life. More power to you Jaycee Dugard.. You Go!!
20 million is not enough, but it should not come from the taxpayers..., it should come from the parole agents who were paid to do a job that they did not!!!
Tim, so what you are saying is that she deserves little or nothing? Or maybe that they have stolen millions and have it stashed for their retirement? Which wouldn't suprise me if they did.
That is not what I'm saying...The taxpayers have had to pay for the incompetence of law enforcement and public officials time and time again..., maybe they would do thier jobs if they were held accountable for the performance of thier duties!
There are crimes against humanity that deserve the death penalty. This is one of them. Why are we now forced to pay for housing, feeding, clothing and medicating these two for the rest of their lives. There is a "better" way to dispose of this kind of garbage. Time to get real folks.
When I watched the show with Diane Sawyer....just heartbreaking. It appeared to be nightmare after nightmare for Jaycee. And she has to live with these memories day after day. HOW SAD! I hope the day never comes for that evil man or his wife to get out of prison. She is as guilty as he is.
I hope that he will spend the rest of his worthless life being used as a captive by his cell mates. Enjoy your stay in the big house you worthless pig!! I hope there are lots of "Fatherly figures" waiting for you!!!!!!
He should be publicly hanged & left to rot in the courthouse square to remind criminally perverted animals that walk on two feet who would damage a child that insanity is no option!
I have mixed emotions about the death penalty. On the one hand, thoy shall not kill does not have a codicille allowing the state to kill. On the other hand this crime would have been stopped had he been executed for the first kidnapping/rape crime he commited. I do not believe in rehabilitation. So do we have the state kill in our name for vengence or as a deterant? It is not working as a deterant due to the actual low possibility of being executed. SO then if we are to take vengance as our cause, then this case rates it imho.
96% of sexual offenders do it again after their prison stays. They are the worst dregs of the human race. So they all should be executed on live tv, whether they are citizens or illegals or religions who condone child marriage, etc. period.
BlackCat--I'd like to see the statistic for that because I what I was told runs contrary to your statement. Recidivism is supposedly really low for sex offenders which tells me what we have to worry about is those who have NOT yet been caught.
"Sex offenders were less likely than non-sex offenders to be rearrested for any offense –– 43 percent of sex offenders versus 68 percent of non-sex offenders. But sex offenders were about four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after their discharge from prison –– 5.3 percent of sex offenders versus 1.3 percent of non-sex offenders."
Not promising that it is right but well here it is...
breakdown, more non-sex crime offenders re-offend but not with the same type crime..
sex-offenders will re-offend in a sex related crime 40+% of the time..within 3 years...
A child was taken from her family, chained, handcuffed, used for personal use under the threat of torture and death. In return she was given the basic necessities to live.
This is the same as our state sanctioned slavery. The only differences is slavery lasted for 250 years, while Jaycee was allowed to educate herself the slaves were not, and the slaves knew this treatment would continue for generations. The big difference is what happened to Jaycee is illegal and what the slave states did was not only sanctioned by the government but also encouraged to spread in the territories.
The media wants to exploit this young lady and they should be ashamed of themselves and leave her alone
She does not need the media's blood money. reasonable interest from the money would easily put her in the upper 2% of income families.
top 2% ? then that would make her evil because she is rich and should pay more taxes
Even if it was 20 billion it woudn't be enough to buy back her innocence.
Leave her alone, howling media dogs
The media has (for now) pretty well perfected the illusion of caring and respectfulness (through the low tone speech trick among others) all the while exacting their price. It's a very slick production staged show nothing more.
So was Sigfried and Roy's relationship with the lions and tigers. Sometimes when you dance with the devil you get burned...
sigh...
She made the decision to write the book. She then made a separate decision to sell the book. No one is going after her, geez.
And yes, she had a horrible ordeal.. and yes, its always about the money. That's all that really matters anymore, the money.
So Nancy kidnaps a child and holds her and abuses her for 19 or 20 years, and only gets 36 years to life, (19 to 20 years with good behavior).
I don't get it....I guess I'm slow and stupid.
" she should be very careful because the media will no more look out for her than Mr Garrido."
Well said.
God damn Phil Garrido and his filthy wife...
Shift Lock--hahaha i'll say,,i never seen such a pig sty b4 in my life
I agree with you 100%. The victim deserved the money, but we should not be the one to pay.
from now on,,i work for cash,,no tax being taken from me to pay the slime that took that video..if any one that should pay the victim,,it should be her captors...taking away her life and her innocents...my heart goes out to that innocent girl,,god be with her
Julio, you are not going to pay out anymore in taxes because of this.
You got that right! The whole darn justice system is broken!
Turn down the emotions for a second and think.
It is on the books, although the Supreme Court can overturn the conviction. It does not apply to all rapes; it only covers rape of a child under the age of 12. It isn't really used; the chances are so high they will be killed by other prisoners it's not worth the expense of a capital conviction.

20 million is not enough.
Nothing short of abolishing serious sex offender's chances of parole and the deaths of Phillip and Nancy Garrido is enough.
Obama can just raise the debt limit so the gov can give her a billion.
No amount could ever be enough!!!!!!!!
Definately not!!
Courtney-06--do we know eac other? you sent me a friend request
Sentenced 431 years to life? Makes no sense. Is the proofreader sleeping again, or is this the actual--even if nonsensical--sentence?
When you look at how many states do NOT have truth in sentencing laws, and how soon criminals get out based on 'good behavior' this sentence makes sense...if they cut it in 1/2 for good behavior, he still won't outlive it.
And he lives the rest of his days on the tax payer dime...
Where is Rorschach when you need him?
When he dies and comes back he got to go to straight to jail. That is what it means. We will know when he comes back. We got the DNA evidence..
Wouldn't want to anger the unions...
I love your response - so true!
Trouble is that 98% of all government workers in every venue are either incompetent, unethical, lack integrity, or are just flat out liars and theives. Is that redundant?
This is why we need less government - and NO unions.
And no, 20 million is not enough!
They estimate that it will cost $7 million just for life long therapy for Ms. Dugard and both of her daughters. $20 million is not enough.
Add police department to this as they had been called to the house by a neighbor as well.
If you were in the same position, frank, would you refuse the $20,000,000.00? No, I thought you wouldn't.
Both of the hard working people in CA have to split the cost.

On your last point.

This is when incompetence becomes really scary.
Both of the incompetents are probably now retired and living on a comfy CA state pension.
Where is Rorschach when you need him?
Where is Dexter Morgan when you need him?
Where's Jack Ruby when you need him?
I only hope that the money will help her to get all the treatment she needs and provide security and safety for her children. The criminals should choke on chicken bones and be thrown to the wolves or pigs for dinner, save us some money.
You would have to kill the wolves after eating that sick bastard though and be sure to follow the procedures for werewolves too.
http://werewolves.monstrous.com/how_to_kill_a_werewolf.htm
Yep, could be tricky!
Why are the taxpayers being asked to foot the bill for this inept government in Calif.? What a cost savings to have used lethal injection to erradicate this vermin. I do hope that these parole Clowns do not get a six figure pension when they retire.
AMEN
The other piece missing from this story: Jaycee's stepfather! He was considered a suspect for quit a while and that lead to the divorce with Jaycee's mother. How may lives were destroyed here?
I agree with you. He went throught so much also.
What logic!
smallstuff,
Why don't you go live in Iraq if you do not like it here?
Guess you got your screen name from your brains.
collateral damage
This has nothing to do with the national debt - it is about peoples' lives.
I knew from your first posting that you were a bleeding heart liberal.
It's better that he stays locked up on our dime instead of him going free at some point and harming more children.
He should be publicly hanged & left to rot in the courthouse square to remind criminally perverted animals that walk on two feet who would damage a child that insanity is no option!
she is a very strong woman... I don't think we should waste time or tax dollars on these two... a firing squad and save the money!
Recidivism is supposedly really low for sex offenders which tells me what we have to worry about is those who have NOT yet been caught.
soulmaster-where did you get that info? Sex offenders have the highest rate of reoffending. Thats a proven fact.
Give it a break. Slavery was outlawed 150 years ago and we fought a war to end it. Jaycee is still very much with us.
