It is a terrible way to grow up where the teenagers are the ones with the most common sense and act more like adults than the actual adults.

To the teens: life really does get better when you are out on your own making your own decisions. Once you have a family of your own you can put all this nonsense to bed. Sorry you have to go through this.

The clincher is that the guy who made this prediction used that very excuse the last time he predicted the rapture and was wrong. He claimed he made a calculation error because his understanding of the Christian scriptures was incomplete. When this doesn't happen on Saturday, you can bet he'll have an announcement that he needs to go back and "review". In reality, he'll be trying to add more BS into his equation so he can make a new prediction a few years down the line.

It is not at all surprising to see people planning for the end of the world, convinced that "Judgement Day" is a predictable event. Billions of people are convinced of "historical events" that are either demonstrably false or absolutely unknowable, based solely on their beliefs that the Bible (or other religious book) is "the word of God." Those people who believe in a fantasy history usually believe in a fantasy future.

It is completely understandable for people to wonder about things that have not been proven, but to be so convinced about things that are unknown and unknowable even to the point of rejecting modern science in order to cling to ancient religious ideas is, at the very least, puzzling. Unfortunately, those gullible folks have filled the pockets of the the Idiot Harold Camping, who predicted that tomorrow is Judgement Day, to the tune of $72 million and screwed up their own lives by planning for the end instead of planning for the future.

Swim, it is actually supposed to start in any time zone at 6pm their time. It will start in New Zealand (according to them, I don't buy it at all for oh so many reasons.) If China and India were last, it would be 5/22/11 and not biblical! (Ok, none of it is, but if I was that false prophet, that's what I'd say.

The Bible doesn't say rich people won't get into heaven. Using a bit of hyperbole to make a point what it says is, "it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to heaven." I believe the idea is that when you focus on money and possessions, your soul tends to be ignored. . .

The verse is actually a reference to Jeruselum's Southern Gate, which was called "The Eye of the Needle" because it was so narrow and short, that you had to unpack your camel to enter in. This was sometimes so time consuming and tedious, that some camels were simply tied up outside the gate fully packed, while the owners simply grabbed their most valuable possessions and carried them with them. It was not meant to say anything about 'giving up' your worldly possessions, but rather consider what is truly valuable to you both material and otherwise.

You are misunderstanding two different uses of the term "materialism". The common usage refers to the over acquisitive habits of many people who try to find happiness by buying and keeping a lot of "material" things... clothes, car, house, jewelry, etc. This is the sense that pop star Madonna used the word in her song "Material Girl".

The other meaning, which appears in the phrase "scientific materialism" refers to a method of understanding reality based only upon the actual physical material of existence around us without resorting to unseen "spiritual" beings, gods, angels, demons, devils or any such thing which are not "material" in form. In other words, materialism in this sense focuses upon dirt, rocks, air, water, gases, minerals, animals, plants, energy, light, magnetism, etc, etc. i.e. the stuff of science, instead of the stuff of faith.

Now then, with all that said, if this dang apockeclipse actually happens, first thang I'monna do is git me a new SUV, still runnin' with the keys left in it. Gotta focus on the residential neighborhoods, 'cause the freeway's gonna be a mess! (sarcasm)

Somewhere around the age of 7, I decided that the nuns must be wrong about heaven. They rapturously described a place of peace and quiet, where you worshiped God for eternity.

That sounded a lot like church to me, and I really did not like church. You had to sit quietly, not talk, listen to things you did not understand -- and only the best people (even at 7 I knew I wasn't one of those) would be sitting up front. So I would be sitting far away, relegated for eternity to be staring at people's backs, because everyone was bigger than I was. For eternity! That is a LONG time.

I decided then and there that God would not do that to anyone. As a kid I never talked about it, of course; but to this day I think that if there is a heaven, maybe we'll find it to be whatever we believe it will be.

I feel really sorry for people who believe that only a select few will make it there-- it must be terribly hard if you think that you will be taken up, and your loved ones will be left behind!

It took a few years of fear and intimidation at the hands of this preacher and my father before we began to shed the mantle of fear and to question what is was all about. After further research I stand corrected. I had been led to believe that the old Julian Calendar year was 360 days...not so. It was exactly 365.25 as opposed to the Gregorian calendar which was 365.2425. Camping used 365.2422, therefore his own timeline actually expired over a week ago, and he doesn't know it.

Well the Bible says anyone who makes a prediction, and one detail is wrong- then they are a false prophet. Camping said this same thing in 1994 so he is (as if it isn't obvious) a false prohpet. We have no clue what time frame God is using so stop trying to guess.

As with many others, I believe the Bible when Jesus Himself said "No man shall know the day or hour, not even the anges in heaven, but my Father only" That means even JESUS doesn't know when it will happen. When Jesus walked on the earth He said He would be coming quickly and that was 2000 years ago. God's time is not our time and if, by some astronomical chance, God had originally scheduled it for tomorrow, He will now change the date so it will keep to the Scriptures that no man will know.

I completely disagree with one of Jack's points... God is not going to destroy the world or indeed "wipe us all out and start all over" but He will allow Satan to run wild for the 7 years of the Tribulation. At the end of that time, Satan will be defeated and Jesus, along with those who were Raptured, will return to the people who survived to rebuild the earth.

Mk 13:32 indicates that not even Jesus Himself knows the day or hour! Only the Father knows.

Well, actually, climate change seems to be connected with the tsunamis, the hurricanes, the tornadoes, the flooding, the melting of the ice caps, and other disasters that are occurring these days.

So yes, we do have something to do with all this. As long as we continue to do things that harm our environment directly or indirectly, we'll be dealing with the consequences of our actions.

God does not need to punish us -- we're doing a pretty good job of punishing ourselves.

I'm guessing that's some folklore that popped up around one of the analogies the Christ used ("in my father's house are many rooms...I go to prepare a place for you...").
