Great, economy in the toilet, at the debt ceiling, nation is in need of strong, present leadership, and our President bounces from one topic to the next without any ownership or responsibility.
How about we remove our troops, bill the nations we have been supporting with our military and promise to help again as soon as they pay the bill, and get to work on jobs, the economy, and $14 trillion in debt.
Why isn't our President making headlines about fixing the economy, or health care, or jobs?
I would love to see peace, and I think that the new road of peaceful protest is the means to reach statehood. But with that being stated first the Arabs will have to understand that to achieve peace Israel will not give up Jerusalem anymore then we would be willing to give up Washington DC.
The part that worries me is that this administration has brought our relationship with Israel to the worst state it has been in since we first recognized them as a nation. The bias towards the Arab nations and the slight towards Israel (from ignoring the Prime Minister and giving the Palestinian Prime minister a state dinner, to the complete disregard and expectation of Israel not to defend itself and yet not condemn the Palestinians when they attack has caused Israel not to trust the Obama Administration. I hope it gets done, but the truth is that we are dealing with the worst foreign relations that any administration has had since prior to World War 2. This administration seems to flounder and hope they can get the job done. As I stated I hope but have no faith with this current power in the white house. Have the Palestinians keep up the peaceful protest, get rid of Ha-mas, and get a new administration in Washington and there will be a real chance of peace finally settling on the lands.

I suppose if we accept that Muslims can occupy the Greek capital of Constantinople, and originally convert the holiest shrine of the Greeks into a mosque, (the Hagia Sophia, which still has a mihrab in it's apse), then it seems right and fair that the state of Isreal should be allowed to exist with Jerusalem as its capital. Even the Isrealis respect the historical Islamic monuments far more than the reverse. Let Isreal live in peace. It's just a tiny strip of land in a huge vast sea of Muslim dominion. Alas, I think there are many palistinians, and muslims who have made the hatred of Isreal the focus and culture of their minds.

I support the Jewish state's right to exist, but I think the Palestinians should be treated fairly. Does anyone know if compensation was ever offered to the Palestinians who lost their land? Maybe this could be a solution.

@ reg: The Israeli's have paid the Palestinians some compensation for property loss due to IDF activities. I won't pretend to know what the actual figures are, the numbers very greatly depending on the source. But it is interesting that you brought this point up, because it provides some insight into how the Palestinians operate. Despite the Palestinian's general rejection of compensation from the Israeli's (look up Palestinian Pride), they are demanding something like $200 Billion in compensation in order to establish peace. So on one hand they act like they are above it all, but when it comes down to creating peace with the Israeli's, they make unreasonable demands like this. The real questions are how much compensation has been paid to Israeli's who were kicked out of Arab countries for being Jewish, and how much compensation have the militant Palestinian groups like Hamas paid the families of the innocent victims they have murdered? The answer is none, and the Israeli's aren't asking for it.

Amen to that. He said in his speech he wants a "process whereby they can create two states that are living side by side in peace and security" and then totally ignores the reality of the situation. The reality is embodied by last week's speech by Hamas MP and cleric Yunis Al-Astal, which aired on Al-Aqsa TV on May 11, 2011. Al-Astal says:
"…In just a few years, all the Zionists and the settlers will realize that their arrival in Palestine was for the purpose of the great massacre, by means of which Allah wants to relieve humanity of their evil.
…When Palestine is liberated and its people return to it, and the entire region, with the grace of Allah, will have turned into the United States of Islam, the land of Palestine will become the capital of the Islamic Caliphate, and all these countries will turn into states within the Caliphate."
Obama will continue to be totally impotent to effect change in the region unless he acknowledges that the primary cause of unrest is the Islamic extremists, not the Israelis.
These are just speeches for the layman over there. Islam and no other religion can stop the way people feel about living their lives. The truth is, both sides are talking without thinking. Israel is wrong about creating the biggest jail on earth, and Palestinians are wrong sending rockets to Israel. The real problem is Saudi Arabia and our foreign policy in the middle east. I may not have social security that I have been paying into it for years when I would really need it, yet my government sends my tax money to other countries such as Israel and Pakistan. All because our representatives could not get elected without contributions from oil companies, and the oil companies think or may in reality get a better deal if we have dictators running the oil countries. I wish the white house was looking at all these posts. Months ago I posted that Taliban and/or Al Qaida or even Iran are not going to be the big problems for us. I wrote that we should worry about Pakistan. United States and England cannot longer play the old games. Look how we tell The Saudi and Bahraini Governments how to oppress people, (that is what the Arabs perceive) and perception is the reality, yet we are trying so hard to keep the regime in Yemen and Bahrain in power. No wonder we do not have any more credibility left. I believe it is time for a real independent party. I do feel sorry for the young people everywhere. There is no future for them. Peace will only be possible when the Palestinians stop attacking Israel and acknowledge Israel's right to simply exist. After all, Israel acknowledges their right to exist.
But Israel does not allow the Palestinians to exist in one contiguous area.
Israel wants the Palestininans to exist in small inconvenient parcels as second class citizens.
The policy is similar to what is applied in Native American [Indian] Reservations in the United States. Indians get to own very segmented properties within the reservations.

This will take the land issue back to the original macacabees and will necessarily include the invasion of Israel and the holy land by the Roman Empire whe it invaded and conquered the jewish people, in fact, slaughtering most of them while the remainer were dispersed throughout the world, This will also include the period from 70 AD onward when the two Roman Palestinian Provinces, Palastine I and Palastine II, with Palastine I covering primarily Jerusalem which was plowed under and renamed Aelia. If they are unwilling to go ack and correct the knotting points, nothing will ever come of trying to sort it out. The Roman Catholic Church needs to butt out. The church may be reinvited back in after the land and border issues have been resolved but these people must be given a chance to make this work and the primary goal should not be prolonging fhe death throes of a failed Roman Empire which the church is so desperately trying to maintain, Yhe Holy Roman Empire is dead. Perhaps a newer, more up to date model might be fashioned so that all is not lost.

The people in this region have never and not see eye to eye in getting along. History seems to always be overlooked. Leave them alone. Th US never in the past could influence them with peace and if they did it was short term. Bottom line, they never liked each other and never will. We need to focus on our own problems. The UN Mandate gave Israel to the Jews and the rest of the land to the Jordanians (Transjordan). The Arabs called all their people out of Israel so they could pound the Jews into the ocean. The Arabs lost. So, instead of living in the land the UN gave them, they schemed to take the land given to the Jews.
Sixty three years later they have a government, sponsors and countries that recognize them. They belong in Jordan, but the Jordanians don't want them because they are the Arab's bargaining chip.
There will never be peace between the Jews and those who hate them.
Nor between the Muslims and those they hate...which is pretty much everyone.

Israel was returning to it's original homeland that it was kicked out of and when the Arabs saw the Jewish population was getting to large they attacked the Jews hoping to kill them all but instead lost a war they started in the first place. if the Palestinian Arabs had left the Jews alone to begin with they wouldn't be a conquered people now. Israel owned the Gaza strip thousands of years before the U.N was ever thought of.
