Here's one point of statistical difference in accounting for casualties between Israelis and Palestinians during Cast Lead operation of 2009-2010.

Quite a few Arab men in their late teens (16 to 20) were killed while shooting rifles at IDF troops or participating in missile launch crews.

Israelis counted them as armed combatants. Palestinians counted them as children and, by definition, civilians.

Before WWII the conscription age in most of future combatant countries was 18. During the war it was lowered to 17 in Germany and USSR (maybe in some other countries too). Most of these boys didn't come back home. Should they be counted as children or soldiers?

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I'm not sure why World War 2 and the establishment of Isreal in the UN charter weren't brought out clearly in the article. It seemed to be completely glossed over in the first paragraph. It's almost as if the author were trying to make it seem as if the Jews attacked the Palestinians to take Isreal.

You mentioned people in the West Bank live as "prisoners". Now I have a proposal for, as its obvious you have never traveled to the Middle East, go to Jerusalem and get a cab to Ramallah.

The Palestinian Authority has been collecting hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars from the Europe, the United States and hell even Israel to do these things. Israel was created by League of Nations Mandate - the mandate was ratified by the United Nations. The national borders were established by an international tribunal.

One day after the official recognition by the international commuity of the nation of Israel - 5 Arab Nations invaded the new nation. Israel of course beat the Arab armies just as they have defeated 2 other attempted invasions by their Arab neighbors.

The palestinians have never been a nation group, never in the history of this world has there ever been country or nation called palestine. Israel has accepted the creation of a palestinian homeland with some specific demands - 1. Sounds reasonable but then Israel is attempting to negotiate with rabid terrorists. Technically speaking, the UK had control of Paleistine at the end of WWI. The Ottomans had it before that. The decision to split it up was a stupid decision as the Palestinians and Jews lived there together in relative peace - per se. Yes, there are 2 sides to the story and neither side is innocent of wrongdoing. The problem is that until both sides willingly come to the negotiating table with a sincere desire to end the bloodshed, nothing will ever change. Unfortunately, I don't see that ever happening. At least not so long as Hamas is around.

And for those who try to excuse the actions of the Palestinians, like an earlier poster said, there is NO justification for the murder of innocent people. When you send suicide bombers into crowded marketplaces, blow up children on schoolbuses and commit other such heinous acts, you lose any moral argument you may have.

Understand that I am not condoning Israel's bad behavior. They have handled multiple situations in the wrong way and committed their own hostile and unjustified acts, starting with the way they initially moved into the area. Both sides are guilty of hostility, aggression, atrocities, etc.

Between their actions and the actions of the Palistinians and the Arab nations in the region, it would probably take the sudden appearance of God and Allah together to chastise them into behaving like intelligent people...and even then I have my doubts.

Actually, yes they are. The Mexicans still believe Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Nevada were stolen. There are numerous factions within Mexico that encourage illegal immigration to these states and help them achieve this with a goal of reclaiming it by overpopulating it with Mexican Nationals. I'd say its working out very well with the help of our own government.

So they might not be doing it with hostility and viciousness, but quietly via invasion.

Idaho Dragon, After reading many of these posts, your last post seems to strike true. We have been the kind,caring and wise older brother to Israel for a long time. Israel has played the part of the spoiled, trouble-making little brother that pretends to behave himself occasionally only to keep our support.

We have repeatedly cajoled him and a squabbling neighbor to the peace table. After days or weeks of heated bartering over every minor point, they leave the table with reluctant promises to keep the peace. As soon as they are out of earshot, one accuses the other of an infraction and they are back at it more fiercely than ever.

Despite our best efforts and tremendous waste of resources, it is sadly time to finally walk away. Leaving them to their own devices may have been the best approach in the beginning. They will be forced to make agreements that they must keep or fight it out to the end. We may be able to quietly referee the fight behind the scenes, but we must make it perfectly clear that we will never step in the ring.

Privately declaring such serious intentions (with a firm deadline) by the United States may be incentive enough for Israel to seek and keep peace with their neighbors on their own.

Your idea sounds good in theory, but unfortunately it would never work in reality.

If there ever was a fight between Israel and the Palestinians, the US would have to be involved to some degree. Otherwise, there would be nothing to keep other nations hostile to Israel out of it, like Iran for instance. Unless that's what you meant by the US being the "quiet referree behind the scenes"?? The US would keep others out of it and let the Israelis and Palestinians "duke it out" without any outside interference?

The main problem is that both sides are guilty of breaking the peace, though I would personally say Hamas is more guilty of that than either Israel or the Palestinian leadership. I have often wondered whether peace between Israel and Palestine would have a real chance if they could just get Hamas out of the picture.

Too much hatred, too much pain and too many people with their own agendas. That's a recipe for neverending strife.

I never said I condoned anything. In fact I think I said I disagreed with the heavy-handed actions Israel takes at times. I simply stated that those who attack Israel conveniently ignore the actions of the surrounding nations and cry much louder for one person killed in Israel than for a hundred killed in Syria. I agree that all life is precious and I agree that the palestinians should be given a state that is free and able to live side-by-side with the Jewish state of Israel with each side free to visit sites they feel are holy to them and without fear of being attacked. Too many palestinian supporters here act as if their struggle is the only one in the world with Israel acting as some rogue entity.

Now for your argument. You cannot support the palestinians right to fight for freedom while condemning Israel for defending itself. Israelis are afraid of dying like anyone else. Both sides have nearly endless justifiable reasons for being angry with one another. Israel oppresses the Palestinians out of fear for its own existance. Take both groups and move them all to an island somewhere and the oppression would be intolerable to everyone. Israel sees itself as beset by hostile countries that have been trying to destroy it since it was founded. It isn't Israel vs Palestine, but Israel vs most of the Muslim world. Whether Sadam, Hamas, or Ahmadinijad, there have been no shortage of enemies threatening to destroy Israel and kill all Jewish inhabitants. Most Jews left those countries - countries that some of their ancestors called home since Roman times - because of oppression far worse than what palestinians endure where the Jews didn't fight back - just accepted what fate had dealt them.

As to whether Israel should behave better than its neighbors ... well, that is a tough argument. If the expectations are not equal, then where do you begin? What is appropriate for one side, but not the other? It becomes far more philosophical than practical. I might argue that Israel does act better than its neighbors, but does it act up to the expectations of what it SHOULD do? I'm not certain Israel can act better and still survive. Is defeat worth idealism when defeat will surely result in the deaths of millions? What is the "proper response" to rockets and suicide/homicide bombers? How does Israel know that the protestors are all peaceful ?

My point is this - I don't think you can have peace if you hold both sides to different standards. They are both equal participants - Israel just has better weapons. Both sides should stop violence, inflammatory comments, and aggressive actions or this situation will far outlive us.

They only prove that Israel has better weapons, not that it's more aggressive or "evil." As far as palestinian settlements built on Israeli lands, does it include homes taken over from Jews in surrounding countries in the middle east or does it limit itself to strictly Israel, gaza, and the west bank? Although I will give it this - expanding settlements is unnecessarily inflammatory and should stop at least until a final peace deal is in place.

Thank you Archeim. It is good to see others with cool heads. I was actually hoping some more rational folk would chime in - even those on the other side. There are a few out there who I've disagreed with, but are far more reasonable. Somehow I think truth would even bash them if they spoke against him for being so rabid - still I was curious.

Henry, Israel doesn't deny anything, it doesn't want anything to do with them. It pulled out of Gaza and built a wall around it because it doesn't want anything to do with them. Why are they still throwing rockets? Why can't they just live their lives as they claim they want? Why can't they proclaim their state as they "threaten" to do for years and become independent?
