The Pakistani's want to try and erase all evidence of this embarassment. The US government will help them to avoid the embarrassment of admitting that they gave billions of dollars in aid to a government that was harboring their most wanted terrorist. Anyone who really believes that people high up in the ISI did not know that bin Laden was there are completely naive. Whether or not the political leadership knew is debatable, but there have been indications for a long time that there was a contingent high up in the ISI that were supporting bin Laden. The fact that bin Laden was found in an area with such a high presence of ISI facilities tends to support this conclusion. The US should be demanding that the Pakistani's arrest the leadership of the ISI for complicity in the terror attacks that bin Laden's supporters have carried out. After all, those attacks killed many Pakistani civilians in addition to US military pesonnel.
This was probably one of the best places to hide. No one would expect him to be there. Also, I doubt anyone knew exactly where he was except for the two courier guys. That is how he stayed safe. Hiding inside, with very limited people knowing where he was. No guards, they only raise suspician.
I think that maybe he has some supporters in the Pakistani government, but I doubt they knew where he was.

Cutting off ties with Pakistan is exactly what happened after we used them to give Afghanistan the supplies they needed to drive out the Soviets.
