The article makes every effort to claim that waterboarding and other enhanced interrogations, but especially waterboarding, provide either no worthy information, or false information. The article also gives an impression of having the inside scoop on all these events. I doubt it. Just comes across as more media speculation posing as fact. And selective speculation at that since it's pretty clear that the author(s) have made every effort to seek out information that helps their opinion that waterboarding is ineffective at best, or counter-productive at worst. Not very convincing imo.
Adam44 - The article makes every effort to claim that waterboarding and other enhanced interrogations, but especially waterboarding, provide either no worthy information, or false information. The article also gives an impression of having the inside scoop on all these events. I doubt it.
It seems to bother you, Adam, that torture didn't play a role in finding Bin Laden. Why is that?
The naysayers, the neocons and the conspiracy theorists are all correct: every single article and televised news broadcast about the death of Osama bin Laden from the fellow travelers of the left-wing-dominated media is a complete and utter fabrication, and all of the statements you hear from officials of the Obama administration — including those from Obama himself — are lies.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney actually deserves all the credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden: he and bin Laden went quail hunting over the weekend in Abbottabad.
It seems to bother you, Adam, that torture didn't play a role in finding Bin Laden. Why is that?
As if you know for sure whether it did or didn't. You are the perfect media dupe skrekk; just lap it up and ask for more. It must comfort you to think you know all the answers even when you don't know squat about what's really going on in the secret war.
Adam-how are you any less of a dupe as you say skrekk is?! You have no evidence to suggest that torture helped yet you seem so willing to 'lap it up' as fact that it did. Torture has been discredited countless times as a way to garner reliable information yet you seem to be unwilling to believe the historical record. So I say.., easy hard charger before you go claiming that someone else is somehow a dupe instead of yourself.
Adam-how are you any less of a dupe as you say skrekk is?
Because I'm not the one making a claim about something very few people know about, he is. He writes:
"...torture didn't play a role in finding Bin Laden." And just how does he know that? He doesn't, and neither do you. You guys just create an echo chamber of "waterboarding doesn't work" and then begin to believe your own assertions as fact.
Why do the Repubs cling to water boarding? Do you just love torture? "Clinging to their guns and bibles", and now torture? Pres. Obama got it right, and you just can't stand it. Bush had 8 years and did not get bin Laden, Pres. Obama got it in 2 and half years. Be glad and get over it.
The fact is that there is NO WAY to work backwards to tell whether or not "enhanced techniques" worked. Think about it.
We tortured and got data. Would we have gotten it anyway? No one knows. Maybe, maybe not.... its ALL speculation usually driven from whether or not you support the enhanced techniques or not.
The article is the same. You can't prove that the techniques work because we got good data and you can't prove it DIDN'T work because we got bad data.
No logic here. Poorly written.
The real driver to whether we do enhanced techniques is deciding who we are. Are we like them? Or not?
Why do the Repubs cling to water boarding? Do you just love torture? "Clinging to their guns and bibles", and now torture? Pres. Obama got it right, and you just can't stand it.
Not sure why you're hell bent on making this a political/religious issue. I am a staunch independent, never registered a republican. I am also an atheist, never a Christian of any kind. I believe in sensible gun control. I don't love torture at all. I think Obama has made all the right moves in Pakistan, and am impressed with how he handled this raid on OBL. So pretty much ALL of your ASSumptions are wrong. But they must give you comfort and make you feel superior in some way or you wouldn't cling to them so rigidly.
LMarc, I am in accord with your post until the very end where you write:
The real driver to whether we do enhanced techniques is deciding who we are. Are we like them? Or not?
I do not accept that we are being like them by using water-boarding in urgent and exceptional (rare) circumstances to obtain critical intelligence which can prevent massacres and/or capture/kill enemy leadership such as OBL. They are so much worse than that, with or without water-boarding. The comparison is without merit imo, but at least I see your point and you are being civil about it, unlike some others here who just want to smear and jeer if a contrary view is expressed.
Michelle The Navy Seals, the CIA ,the intelligence community and all our brave military men and women deserve the lion's share of credit for this. I give the President credit for making the decision to execute the mission but I believe any sitting President with the exact intelligence on the issue would have done the same. I am an Independent but to hear the liberals on this one, you would think the President went in single handed Rambo style and took them out .
The CIA Director said that harsh tactics were used. Waterboarding was one of them.
All the hard work was done between 2002 to 2009. It got easier from 2009 to the present. It's like putting a puzzle together. It's always harder in the beginning.
Reviewing my post I see I missed a point that should have been made: If you believe that water-boarding and such methods are torture, then you would likely be against it. If you believe those techniques are NOT torture and are far less than what "they" do, you are probably in favor of its use. Either way... I agree we're not "like them" as you said.
The one problem I have with your statement is exactly how do you know when you "need" to use it? Since you cannot predict its outcome based on current knowns nor based on its past use, how do you know?
- There has actually been a fair amount written in the last couple of days suggesting that while this courier's nickname came out in when a suspect was tortured 8 years ago, there was no information gathered since then that helped identify who the individual really was, his location, etc. All of that followup information that led to the real courier and finally the killing of OBL was gleaned from intelligence on the ground and a few leads from non-tortured suspects.
-I refer you to research how torture has time and again been shown to produce false information more often than not from suspects captured. Additionally, waterboarding has been deemed torture.
I'd like to see a clip of someone saying this information was gathered through torture.
Panetta said some of this information was gathered from prisoners that had, at one point been tortured (YEARS after they stopped torturing). He did not say that this information was divulged during torture.
The right is just trying to jump on whatever they can to try to steal the spotlight.
Adam44 - There has actually been a fair amount written in the last couple of days suggesting...
Suggesting this, suggesting that, suggesting the other, yes, a tsunami of "analysis" and reporting, both written and spoken, about what is actually happening in the secret war, almost all of it sheer speculation. Just because Mr. X, Y, or Z is cited doesn't mean much when it comes to the secret war. They are secrets for a reason, and Bob from Station KCAN, or Karen from USA Today, or even George from the New York Times, are mostly just guessing. Of course it's only natural to want to solve the riddle (just how was OBL captured?!) but the problem comes when these people actually think they know how it happened, and tell the rest of us how it (didn't) happened. They probably get 85 - 90% of it completely wrong. I'm not claiming that I know either, but I don't pretend to know. I'm so tired of the knowing pretense and all the hokum which comes from it.
Right now it would be very useful for US intel to interview some of the people in Bin Landen's compound, but it makes perfect legal sense for Pakistan not to grant custody to a country known to use torture.
In fact as a brand new signatory to the Convention Against Torture (in effect since 2010), Pakistan probably shouldn't convey any prisoners to the US if it takes its treaty obligations seriously. Other countries like Canada are also now very careful about the conditions under which they'll extradite anyone to the US - Canada will no longer extradite terrorism suspects because of US torture.
The desire on the part of teabaggers like Adam to use torture actually harms US national security.
Skrekk, I'm not a member or follower of the Tea Party. No interest in it at all actually. I know you're desperate to smear me but you keep shooting blanks. All of your ASSumptions are wrong, just as with what you THINK you know about the secret war. Pretty sad.
Adam44 - I am not referring to news pundits at all. I am referring to the CIA director and the department of defense spokesman describing the trail of how the information regarding OBL's location came into the hands of the US. He said that "it strains incredulity to suggest that any useful information" came from the suspects that were tortured.
I find it amazing how after all those years of running free he ended his life living behind a 12 foot fence - where he never left - he made his own prison - just end - solitary confinement and then death!
There is more and more similarity of Osama's personal life and Adolph Hitler's all the time. Is it such a great oddity? Yes, I started to comment a few days ago that it seems Osama had always been a fearful man, but really had become consumed with his fear recently. He had taken on a big game as a young man and made a big dare and then realized what he had done and become so fearful, but of course had to keep pushing up the ante as a pretense until it consumed him, ate him up. At least all the evidence seems to point that direction.
@publicspeech - Oh gosh - I apologize! I thought you were saying horrible things about the POTUS! I've been on the fox blogs and they compare Obama to Hitler constantly. That's what I thought you were doing. Again- I apologize. You are not one of the bonked.
We still need to be able to tell taxpayers we are sending Billions to foreign countries with no accountabilityand no conditions for results because we are not done screwing you yet.
"The whole purpose of sending our soldiers into the compound, rather than an aerial bombardment, was to obtain indisputable proof of bin Laden's death,"
Oh Dear my name is Arlene , Prove it? Have you seen any physical proof? No only lip service! You would believe anything that The Community Leader of a President would say! There is no way to prove anything by our so called American born leader. Perfect setup by the brother Obama for the Osama, close spelling of names oops! Go sip some more of your PINK KOOL-AIDE as our country becomes weaker and the world laughs harder! Stop slurring you words!
To All Cowards, yes, Pres. Obama is the leader of a really large community, the community of the United States of America. That's a pretty big community and we are proud of our leader for getting the job done, that Pres. Bush could not do.
Well MJ, I would say the answer to your question is, there is politics involved in everything that concerns earthly men; and each player who comes into the game has his own personal brand of politics to add to that game.
Dumping him in the Ocean means that he is amoung the lowest of the low, whale turds.
Of course there are going to be the conspiracy theorists that are going to now say that he was captured alive, and is on a Ghost Ship (US Intelligence Ship at International Waters) supplying intelligence (cover story the captured documents and computer stuff). So after he is used up (no more valuable intelligence then he is executed and dumped at sea).
I was actually surprised that they killed him a whole year basically before the 2012 Presidential Campaign. Very surprised. Usually, don't they hold onto significant finds until they can politically use them to their advantage?
Another year is a long time to wait. But by the info given by the media, they thought they knew where he was in 2009. That would not have been beneficial politically at that time. If it had failed, there is another year to polish up the results. As it is, the glow would have to be carried forward. Is that the reason the picture is not being shown now? I don't know, but it will be interesting to see if at some time in the next year Obama changed his mind.
It is not always helpful to keep big things like this to be a political advantage. Nixon ended the Vietnam war in Jan 1973 and Watergate unraveled in March/April of that same year. So ending the war did not save him.
People have short memories so it will depend on what else happens in the next year as to whether the killing of Osama bin Laden will help Obama keep the Presidency.
You sincerely believe they held onto this for POLITICAL GAIN???? They waited to be sure it was him, and then took him OUT...something the PREVIOUS administration stopped trying to do after only a couple of years...
Some of you need to spend some time at D.C. (Dysfunctional Congress), you would not believe how much crap is turned into "Politically Expedient":
Success = Publicized.
Failure = "Classified".
All of them do that, Repugnants, Demoncraps, In Depends (In Adult Diapers).
Example: They "Outed" a bunch of USN SEALs at the beginning of the 2003 US Military Liberation of Iraq. Who do you think tipped off the News Media that the USN SEALs would be at a certain place and time. So the news media were standing around waiting to take pictures and videoing (high intensity video camera spot lights) of the USN SEAL Team arriving (including covert classified operational tactics).
How do you think those USN SEALs felt surrounded by News Reporters filming and taking photos of them, knowing that those years (decades) of training were flushed down the toilet, no longer being able to work as a Covert US Military Special Warfare Operator.
Something that most of you do not realize about how harsh All US Military Special Warfare Training is (required mental and physical dedication to nothing else):
"Toughness infused by a harsh environment (training short of killing you) and a harsh culture (your peers that survived the near death training and predecessors develope the accepted Culture of US Military Special Warfare) makes a perfect warrior." - mentioned by Frank Herbert's Dune Series.
Everything that is done in DC ,especially by the President(s) is politically motivated. It always has been and always will be.
I promise you, as evil as Osama bin Laden was, if his death would have hurt who ever was President at the time, it just happened to be Obama, it would have never been done.
With all the people who spat on our military during Vietnam, no president would bring our troops home until Nixon needed a political boost. It started with Eisenhower in 1954, went though Kennedy, Johnson, to end with Nixon in 1974.
I give the Bush administration much credit for going into Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq and capturing many of these terrorists. Without capturing them we still would not know where Osama is. I give Obama a little credit for ordering the raid. Yet, Obama opposed Guantanamo and interrogations (they have since ceased). I give credit to the CIA, the U.S. military, and everyone else in the intelligence community.
Scott--Relevancy as to whom you give credit? I can easily point to the fact that the Bush Administration put little effort in Afghanistan and invaded Iraq on proven manufactured evidence. The result---4400+ lost American lives and the ME is completely destabilized. President Obama campaigned on increased presence in Afghanistan, bringing OBL to justice, and winding down Iraq--all done.
Ten years of killing people that had nothing to do with 911 plus the death of thousands of our young troops to catch one high profile man. I don't think I would want any credit for this procedure. If this is the best we could do, it might have been better to wait for age to get him.
We are still spending lives and billions. How long should be the real question, now.
Afghanistan: Started 1980s US Military Training Teams from Germany as an asset to the Agency to train the Pro US ("Western") Afghan Muhajeen during the USSR 40th Army Occupation. OBL, Osama Bin Laden, was at Saudi Arabia, during the USSR 40th Army Occupation.
Our screw up, deserting our Afghan Allies, the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen. Resulting in the 1990s Pro USSR Afghans returning from USSR Backed Fundamentalist Islamic Iran becoming the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, and massacring ALL of the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen (including at Pakistan). The massacres were not that hard to accomplish, as the USSR 40th Army Occupation, nearly wiped out most of the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen, and after the defeat of the USSR 40th Army Occupation most of the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen did not have weapons, ammunition, nor funds, etc. to oppose the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Iranian Trained, Equipped, Funded 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban. This was a result of US Congress refusing the begging of Senator Charles Wilson's (Democrat, Texas) desperate requests to help the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen rebuild Afghanistan back to the early 20th Century "Little America" that Afghanistan was before the USSR 40th Army Occupation Conventional "Total War". Because Afghanistan was left in this situation our US Allies the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen could not full fill their promises to the Afghan People, and the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban became popular Politically (at the point of armed force, like Hamas Warlord using armed force to oust the Palestinian Authority).
Currently, it is NOT the Al Quada International Franchise that everyone has to worry about pertaining to Afghanistan, it is the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban (and Pakistanis Taliban, Army of Islam (Pakistan), Hamas Foreign Fighters, Chechen Foreign Fighters, etc.) as backed by Fundamentalist Islamic Iran (Backed by the Chinese and Russian Federation). General McChrystal* tried to tell the Public about this until he was muzzled and verbally reprimanded (First Verbal Reprimand during a Video Conference in front of all of us.).
*General McChrystal one of the few US Military Flag Officers (Generals and Admirals) trained and experienced as Asymmetric Warfare (Insurgency and Counter Insurgency Warfare). Successful Commander of Joint Special Operations Command (US Army Special Forces, USAF Special Operations Wings, USMC MARSOC, USN SEALs), Successful Commander JSOC Special Operations Task Force Iraq (responsible for the locating and capture of President Hussein, also blamed and held responsible for harsh interrogation techniques that lead to the locating of President Hussein, current techniques used to locate OBL) as the Right Hand to General Petraeus at Iraq.
Iraq: 1980s US Military Training Teams from Germany to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars. Use of Chemical Weapons to end the Iran Iraq Wars, to stop the millions of deaths (on both sides); just like the use of the two US Nuclear Weapons during WWII on Japan. As at that time the Kurdistanis (Indo Europeans, Shiites, Kurdish version of Farsi) were the Armed (men, women, children) Allies of Fundamentalist Islamic Iran (Persians, Shiites, Farsi) fighting against the Iraqis (Arabs, Sunnis, Arabic). The centuries old blood feud between, Arabs versus Persians, Sunnis versus Shiites, etc.. Of small note: The US Military Training Teams from Germany had free access to everything, everywhere at Iraq with Diplomatic Immunity during those times. Iraq at that time did not have the capability to manufacture Chemical Weapons, nor Nuclear Weapons (their Nuclear Weapons program was destroyed by the Israelis, 1981, north of Baghdad, Osirak).
Later out of context, the use of the Chemical Weapons were used to justify US Law, 1998, H.R. 4655, to Overthrow President Hussein, including the hiring, training, arming, organizing, of those Shiites at Iraq formerly from Iran (fled the massive unemployment after the Fall of the Shah of Iran thru Basra) as cheap Illegal Alien Labor, used as assassins and insurgents. This failed resulting in the executions of hundreds of thousands of the assassins and insurgents as Traitors. The White House spun this to "Dictator Massacres His Own People" (photos of widows weeping over mass graves). Historically documented as the first time President Hussein was labelled a Dictator. After the failure, the limited US Military option was used, 1998, Operation Desert Fox. This too failed to incite the Iraqis to Overthrow President Hussein. Using the previously US Congressionally approved Intelligence of 1998, H.R.4655, President Bush had the US Senate write and approve a final option, direct unlimited US Military Actions to achieve the Overthrow of President Hussein, the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution. This was to cover his (President Bush's) arse Legally, as required by the Restrictions of the Presidential War Powers by the 1973 War Powers Resolution (US Law).
Early on, both Afghanistan and Iraq became United Nations Missions, as UN Nation Building. Previously starting with UN Sanctions and UN Embargoes against Iraq, example: UN/US Iraqis Oil for Food Program prior to the 1990s First Gulf War.
As far as the US Economy, I blame the Repugnants, Demoncraps, In Depends, as they removed those US Laws that made Illegal those Causes of the 1907 Depression, 1929-1939 Great Depression, and the current 60-100 Trillion USDs "Global Economic Crisis" consisting of the "Credit Crisis", "Mortgage Crisis", "Banking Crisis", "Wall Street Crisis", "Financial Crisis", etc.. Research the Glass Steagall Acts (US Laws).
Removal of the Glass Steagall Acts (US Laws), also made "Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction" completely Legal, these Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction are capable of destroying entire Governments and Economies. Research Financial WMDs, at CBS News (www.cbsnews.com). Research the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) "Membership" at isda.org.
To even believe that a US Government Budget "Surplus" means anything, that is money that is budgeted by US Congress (Politicians) for use by US Politicians. 0+0 = 0. Money not used, left over, from those appropriations as the "Budget". example: US Congress appropriates more money than anticipated equals "Budget Surplus".
As the real indicators of the US Economy are the National Deficit and the Interest on the National Deficit.
Example: Interest on National Deficit, source Democratic National Committee (DNC) "Misery Index" as Facts that backfired:
President Clinton's Interest on the National Deficit: $18.9 Billion
President Bush's Interest on the National Deficit: $16.6 Billion
Before all the name calling and uninformed uneducated non factual opinions start, just research the Facts, as to know the Causes and Facts are the first steps to solving the current US Problems, regardless of Political Partisanship.
Isn't it funny how the republicans didn't want the Bush administration to take any blame for 9/11 when they WERE in office but they want to give the Bush administration credit for the taking out of Bin ladin when they have not been in office for over two years. Doesn't surprise me a bit. It's called sour grapes.
Good points, Marci. And you're right. The 8 long years of Bush-Cheney incompetence, war profiteering (at the taxpayers' expense) and support of corp. control and greed over the constituents of the electorate grow more embarrassing each and every day as Pres. Obama and VP Biden undo the problems THEY CREATED. When things went sour for them, they blamed Pres. Clinton (who left a solid record of jobs creation, prosperity, a lowering of the national crime rate, a $127 billion surplus, no unwinnable military operations, etc.). BUT NOW, when Pres. Obama, the CIA, and our courageous Navy Seals save the day and end that monster's career, they want credit for setting it up! REALITY NEVER PEEPS INTO A CONNEDSERVATIVE'S MIND. VOTE FOR ALL THINGS LEFTIE.
I wonder why Fox isn't running this story? Could it be because they don't want foxbots like you to know the truth. You didn't read this article did you?
Waterboarding was not a factor in the mission that was finally accomplished on Sunday. Several reliable and connected, named sources have already gone on record as to that fact.
mynameisearlene - They are. If you would actually watch FOX for a change, you would be a better informedd person. Although I don't agree with FOX on everything, I do watch the lame scream media as well.
lol - I watch and read Fox (and other news outlets) regularly. That's how I know how deliberately misleading Fox is. They quoted CHENEY (of all people) as their "proof" that it was waterboarding that led to Bin Laden's demise. bwhah hahahaha ha haha ahahahah hah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hah ah
Earlene-----After Bush was "given" the elction by the SCOTUS, the ballots were all released. The media which had been screaming bloody murder in big black headlines about the so-called rigged election, was finally allowed to sit down and actually count the actual ballots themselves. The press pounced onto those ballots like a suicide bomber pouncing onto his seventy-two virgins. After counting the actual ballots, the media, true to its code of ethics, published the results. In the next few weeks, the truth was quietly released in back pages, below the fold. Surprise! Surprise! Guess what! Bush won the election; he got MORE votes than Gore. There is NO NEED for you to take my word for all of this. Check it out for yourself or STFU !!! And, please, let us finally lay to rest this little fairy tale of a stolen election. Live long and prosper !!!
ASININE! Get real! Waterboarding is a heinous war crime! It is dangerous and can result in death. How would you like someone to do it to your grandmother? Or your dog? Or you? You wouldn't!
Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, Moammar Gadhafi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bashar Al-Assad, Kim Jong-il (and his 3 son's), and of course, screamin' little fat man, "You can't forget me, I'm their best friend"...Hugo Chavez.
Torture does not work, period. I am a retired Marine VN-era NCO/Officer who later was trained as an Interrogator. I then served as one all over the world for nearly 12 years. The hype about the so-called enhanced technique (e.g., water boarding) is political hype by one side of the aisle for political gain, and nothing else. It mostly comes from ignorant and ill-informed people, and it greatly harms our country.
Danny M. Francis (1st Lt., USMC, Ret.) - Watertown, NY
Eyepublius - Interesting comment, especially coming from a Vietnam Vet (?). I too am a Vietnam Veteran and I saw plenty of torture in the field in Nam. Sutcher Kit come to mind, or little bon fires? Making a person "feel" like they will drown isn't torture, broken bones and electrical wires attached are.
"The hype about the so-called enhanced technique (e.g., water boarding) is political hype by one side of the aisle for political gain, and nothing else."
You're right. The left has used this hype for great political gain.
The level of reporting by Michael Isikoff is of substantially higher quality than that of authors of recent articles I have read concerning this subject, and I appreciate the difference.
The investgative work is impressive, the FBI and the CIA should receive an increase in the number of people who now want to be Special Agents. I would be proud if my son or daughter said daddy I'm going to be a Special Agent.
Covert, even to the extent that their families would not know.
Recognition, zero, as everything documenting what you did goes into Classified Vaults (same with any Awards, Narratives for Awards and Medals, Certificates of Appreciation, etc.).
Glory equals Zero, Country (Nation) First, yourself last. (this is explained to you when you first get involved). After a while this gets to be really unrealistic, as the Fobbits (PX Soldiers, NEX Sailors, BX Airmen, US Military) with all the Awards get promoted first, before you by the "Unclassified" Promotions Boards (the Admin Clerks with a ENAC "Secret" Clearances, have no need to know anything, as your "Official US Military Records" do not reflect what you really are, your Classified "Other non Official US Military Records", aka Restricted US Military Personnel Records do that in many cases will exceed the Security Clearances of those on the Promotions Boards). Example: During the Cold War many went thru Special Warfare Training as Roster Numbers only (different colored magic marker numbers on masking tape), no names and no indications of US Military Units, Ranks/Grades, Previous Qualifications/Training, etc.; upon completion of training, the "Classified Rosters" (Names, Social Security Numbers, Service Numbers, Rank/Grade, Branch of US Military Service/Agency, etc.) were destroyed after the Graduate Certificates were typed up and sent to the originating Unit/Organization as "Classified" (you were given a rolled up blank piece of paper or your new set of US Military Orders during the closed to Public Private Graduation Ceremony (no photographs allowed)). Times were different then compared to now, example: Families allowed to attend the Graduation Ceremony.
For Operational Security Reasons aka "National Security" the training was Never noted on the then Official US Military Personnel Records (viewable by everyone as "For Official Use Only", Unclassified, including potential active USSR Agents or USSR "Assets" (recruited from within the US Military by blackmail, money, etc.).).
The reality of it is, Bush, Cheney and gang were really incompetent. They put the US on the brink of finacial ruin with two wars directed by these morons while cutting taxes for thier masters. Miliary campains need the brightest minds and the best supporting cast. Obama brings that. Bin Laden wasn't the genius that Bush made him look like. Geronimo being of great military and survival skills certainly was well beyound Bin Laden but he make Bush look really imcompetent.
Don 9, you are absolutely correct, sir! Bush was an incompetent LONG before his cronies and enablers stole the WH for him in '00. He proved it by making an unfunny joke about not being to find wmd's. "WHERE are those wmd's?" he said on film. Then he looked under the table. "Are they under here...? Let me see.." and so on. Then he said on 3/12/02 that finding bin Laden wasn't a "priority." (??) But somehow after stacking up mounds of incompetence MILITARILY, DIPLOMATICALLY, DOMESTICALLY, INTERNATIONALLY, FINANCIALLY, and CULTURALLY, the Dumbya apologists want him to 'share' in the Obama/Navy SEALS/CIA triumph. Please! Obama gets the approval bump. Obama got him. Bush is out of office. Bush doesn't get to visit Ground Zero with Obama. That says a lot.
He didn't say when it would be presented, he said "ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public". This could mean a month, a year, a decade or longer. He also said "I don't think there was any question" which means it was only his opinion. So in review he never said "There will be a photograph presented tomorrow" therefore your question is perplexing.
Instead of the name calling, how about, just stating your researched Facts, to make the other poster be proven as uninformed. (I previously got suspended by tyler for using that word, "id...t").
THANK YOU, Jeff Layman! Bush apologists blamed everything on Pres. Clinton every time Dumbya screwed up, but now with that clown more than two years away from office and his spectacular failures, they want to share in the Obama/Navy Seals/CIA triumph! What??
NO CHANCE! It says a lot that Pres. Obama didn't invite Dumbya to the Ground Zero proceedings today. Let the reich wingers stew on that. Obama just picked up a TON OF VOTES for next year. The righties don't even have a real candidate yet. They're still talking to their 'exploratory committees.' HAHAH!
So this article morphed into claiming that the previous administration's policy of enhanced interrogation techniques had nothing to do with pinning down the location of OBL. Typical left wing rubbish since the story has continued to evolved and what is said today may not be the official story tomorrow.
There are other articles with quotes from the current Director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, that contradict this article, pertaining to current interrogation techniques.
In 20-25 years the truth will come out, Osama will be buried at sea, he will have 2 bullet holes in his head, and he will be washed (waterboarded till it runs out of his ears)...after they get all the info out of him they can....As long as they don't show a body they can tell us anything we want to hear, and theres nothing we can do about it....
they had a 'typo' on their screen that read 'OBama Bin Laden Dead'...an accident? snort...I seriously doubt it...considering the right wing mouths were immediately jumping on this and crediting Bush's groundwork for this...lol yeah he had all his energies directed towards...Iraq...and giving Al Quaeda a foothold there...genius, pure genius...
"If it really had been waterboarding that had produced the key piece of information that led us to Osama bin Laden," one U.S. official said, "we would have been having this conversation years earlier — not in 2011.
Really?
How do you know?
They didn't build the compound until 2005 and we don't really know how long Bin Laden was there. It could be the courier didn't know at the time of the interrogation if he'd ever see Bin Laden again.
What people fail to understand in these posts is that in that part of the world bribery is a civil, not criminal, offense as it is here that is punishable by a slap on the wrist fine. And that's only if the issue is big enough for them to care about it. Also, if you tell on people then your family, honor and life are always in danger. Once you understand these facts then you can understand why some Pakistan officials can't be trusted and some can. You can then understand how the Indian and Afghan governments work too. It all depends mainly on whose paying them. Bin Laden had big bucks himself and he also had people sending him money. That's why he was left alone all those years. He paid the right people to be quite. Our government understands this so that's why they didn't give them the heads up on our operation. I'm sure there were some Pakistan government officals in high places who didn't know where he was located but only because they were not the ones getting paid! That's why those officials were outraged. The reason our government can find success over there is we don't play that game well enough or long enough. We just send the whole country money, the politicians in office at the time take it to pay their own people, and we complain we are not getting our bang for our bucks.
That home has 5 or 6 yrs of DNA + new ones: Hair, bedsheets, blood puddles. Finger prints. Maybe handwriting The list goes on and on.
Adam my answer is "SHALLUN" it's not my problem
Meanwhile, where was the ally on "war on terror" Pakistan?
For fighting militants, we have been giving huge aids to Pakistan.
Is it so easy to fool the US top admin people?
One Word: iPhone or "Smartphone".
And everyone thought that there was no purpose to Tracking.
It seems to bother you, Adam, that torture didn't play a role in finding Bin Laden. Why is that?
'Mysterious Kuwaiti,' my foot.
StMiller asks:
Or not?
Michelle asks/accuses:
Not sure why you're hell bent on making this a political/religious issue. I am a staunch independent, never registered a republican. I am also an atheist, never a Christian of any kind. I believe in sensible gun control. I don't love torture at all. I think Obama has made all the right moves in Pakistan, and am impressed with how he handled this raid on OBL. So pretty much ALL of your ASSumptions are wrong. But they must give you comfort and make you feel superior in some way or you wouldn't cling to them so rigidly.
LMarc, I am in accord with your post until the very end where you write:
I do not accept that we are being like them by using water-boarding in urgent and exceptional (rare) circumstances to obtain critical intelligence which can prevent massacres and/or capture/kill enemy leadership such as OBL. They are so much worse than that, with or without water-boarding. The comparison is without merit imo, but at least I see your point and you are being civil about it, unlike some others here who just want to smear and jeer if a contrary view is expressed.
michelle.....Obama didn't kill Osama, the Navy Seals did. BTW, I am neither Republican or Democrat, I am right down the middle.
When a democrat wants someone killed, he asks a republican to do it for him.
Seems to work out fairly well.
Grump, sounds about right. Republicans do not belong in charge.
Oh, except for all those democrats in the military and intelligence. I happen to be related to a few.
Adam, thanks for the post and civility :)
From what I have heard, the army field manual and code of conduct stuff describes it as torture. That's enough for me.
Adam44
Stmiller writes:
I slightly misquoted. Read the article here which gets my point across that this information clearly did not come from torture.
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2011/05/04/Bush-aide-OBL-death-vindicates-torture/UPI-72801304494200/
StMiller,
Any water board gathered information would have been very old and not useful regarding OBL's current location, I agree.
I water board myself, on occasion, when my sinus' are acting up. It has produced no useful information whatsoever.
Torture does not produce reliable information.
grump in NM - I think I remember that you said you have grandkids. Maybe they can help waterboard you. Doing that alone sounds difficult! :)
You are another bonkers rightwingnut.
@publicspeech - Oh gosh - I apologize! I thought you were saying horrible things about the POTUS! I've been on the fox blogs and they compare Obama to Hitler constantly. That's what I thought you were doing. Again- I apologize. You are not one of the bonked.
Most of the Islamic radicals and terrorists are cowards.
They operate in groups and do their terrorist actions in unsuspecting places!
Osama, naturally, despit Paki protection and all gaurds was certainly afraid of his life.
Or else why will he limit himself to one building?
Can Pakis guarantee a more safer place than the military town and next door to military academy?
The Paki's must have known he was there all along. And how much money have they taken from us in the form of "aid"?
Translation:
We still need to be able to tell taxpayers we are sending Billions to foreign countries with no accountabilityand no conditions for results because we are not done screwing you yet.
None of this never happened!
Prove it.
"The whole purpose of sending our soldiers into the compound, rather than an aerial bombardment, was to obtain indisputable proof of bin Laden's death,"
You Prove it
Apparently there was proof enough for the navy seal who pulled the trigger. Not enough for you, coward?
Pakis say that they did not know about Osama.
Now let us wait for Paki and huge armies of Islamic radicals, terrorists and their supporters versions.
Let us leave the proving business to attorneys! They should be kept busy too!
Stop slurring you words!
you are one of the bonkers
Actually he could be right.. he said "none of this never happened" so that leaves it kind of open
"None of this never happened" is a double negative, meaning "it happened."
To All Cowards, yes, Pres. Obama is the leader of a really large community, the community of the United States of America. That's a pretty big community and we are proud of our leader for getting the job done, that Pres. Bush could not do.
Its amazing how one simple 5 word post can prove "stupid" in so many ways.
"""Let us leave the proving business to attorneys! They should be kept busy too!"""
That's what is wrong with the country today, terrorist lawyers!
To All Cowards - (but you in particular)
Check out "Al Jazeera.net". They will verify the death of bin Laden for you.
Then you can go and give "No only lip service!" yourself!
Why didn't they bury Bin Laden at Ground Zero, so that every nite a New Yorker could pee on his grave?
Well MJ, I would say the answer to your question is, there is politics involved in everything that concerns earthly men; and each player who comes into the game has his own personal brand of politics to add to that game.
Then moderate Muslims with different labels and of different sects and tribes will also ask for mosques.
So ground zero will have Osama burial place and mosques!
You may be closer to the truth than you know
I was actually surprised that they killed him a whole year basically before the 2012 Presidential Campaign.
You people are just sick.
You sincerely believe they held onto this for POLITICAL GAIN???? They waited to be sure it was him, and then took him OUT...something the PREVIOUS administration stopped trying to do after only a couple of years...
ffs...get a life or get your heads examined...
Some of you need to spend some time at D.C. (Dysfunctional Congress), you would not believe how much crap is turned into "Politically Expedient":
Success = Publicized.
Failure = "Classified".
"Toughness infused by a harsh environment (training short of killing you) and a harsh culture (your peers that survived the near death training and predecessors develope the accepted Culture of US Military Special Warfare) makes a perfect warrior." - mentioned by Frank Herbert's Dune Series.
wheres
I am surprised Old-Bummer had the courage to risk the go ahead.
I give the Bush admininstration credit for the disaster that was 9-11 having happened to us in the first place; that and Depression II.
Thanks a bunch, "Pres" Bush. (the only pres to ever be placed in office by a court instead of cleanly elected)
U probably give the Bush administration for credit for saving the economy after the Clinton administration too u IDIOT!
So, all we had to do, was kill 100K Iraqis, and displace many times that number, to kill our rival?
That is like saying, we could avenge WWII by destroying Mexico.
Just the Researched FACTS.
Why is it so hard to accept reality?
They don't want to believe that Pres. Obama got the job done. It makes them crazy.
michelle.....is your last name Obama?
Profiling my azz..... Waterboarding lead to Osama !!!!
Three Cheers for WATERBOARDING !!!!!!!!
Three cheers for abandoning our values! Yay, we are now as bad as our enemies!
lol - but depressingly accurate as well, at least in some circles
Three cheers for Water-boarding. It should be available as an interrogation tool for all top level terrorists.
Bill-433395
ASININE! Get real! Waterboarding is a heinous war crime! It is dangerous and can result in death. How would you like someone to do it to your grandmother? Or your dog? Or you? You wouldn't!
Next.
Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, Moammar Gadhafi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bashar Al-Assad, Kim Jong-il (and his 3 son's), and of course, screamin' little fat man, "You can't forget me, I'm their best friend"...Hugo Chavez.
i DON'T CARE IF ANY ONE WAS ARMED OR NOT...HE IS DEAD..DON'T CARE HOW...too bad we didn't kill them all!...
Well said. Thank you.
And what is your name and rank and location SFCHUD? Are you afraid "Old-Bummer" will seek you out?
Torture works, just ask the Korean marines, Aussie's special forces....
The problem with your statement, eyepublius, is that administration officials have all but come out and admitted that enhanced techniques DID work. Check out from minute 4:00 on of this interview of Leon Pannetta.
You're right. The left has used this hype for great political gain.
You sound like a supporter of the far left. What is wrong with giving water-boarding a try on tough terrorist prisoners?
The level of reporting by Michael Isikoff is of substantially higher quality than that of authors of recent articles I have read concerning this subject, and I appreciate the difference.
Where does he get his info?
The investgative work is impressive, the FBI and the CIA should receive an increase in the number of people who now want to be Special Agents. I would be proud if my son or daughter said daddy I'm going to be a Special Agent.
As would I. Duty, Honor COUNTRY.
Deciphering the nostradamus hard drive:
The reality of it is, Bush, Cheney and gang were really incompetent. They put the US on the brink of finacial ruin with two wars directed by these morons while cutting taxes for thier masters. Miliary campains need the brightest minds and the best supporting cast. Obama brings that. Bin Laden wasn't the genius that Bush made him look like. Geronimo being of great military and survival skills certainly was well beyound Bin Laden but he make Bush look really imcompetent.
Read and comprehend post # 6.7.
CIA director Leon Panetta had told NBC News, "I don't think there was any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public" ...
Whats up with this picture?
He didn't say when it would be presented, he said "ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public". This could mean a month, a year, a decade or longer. He also said "I don't think there was any question" which means it was only his opinion. So in review he never said "There will be a photograph presented tomorrow" therefore your question is perplexing.
That is called D.C. "Tap Dancing". As if enough Public Pressure is placed, becoming Political Pressure, then the photograph(s) will be released.
D.C. (Dysfunctional Congress) was one of the worst Assignments I ever had.
yeah, like the bush administration saved are economy after the clinton administration. ur an idiot!!

You can keep hoping that the story morphs into what fox mislead you to believe in the first place; sure you can.
There are other articles with quotes from the current Director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, that contradict this article, pertaining to current interrogation techniques.
Show us the body...no body no death...nice little fairy tale...or more of the same old lie's

In 20-25 years the truth will come out, Osama will be buried at sea, he will have 2 bullet holes in his head, and he will be washed (waterboarded till it runs out of his ears)...after they get all the info out of him they can....As long as they don't show a body they can tell us anything we want to hear, and theres nothing we can do about it....
yournameisearlene
Bravisimo Earlene! Great post! Love that name! - "Deathers"!
YES these are the same vile reactionary Obama-haters with their asinine "birther" claims!
Turds that won't flush!
The CIA is very good at its job and should be credited with providing the profile
that led us to the Killer.....
Sarah Palin to Obama: Stop "pussyfooting" and release Osama bin Laden photo"
Maybe Obama and Osama are brothers? Names are close!
No one but you apparently give a ratsbutt what the twat-er of wasilla has to tweet about this.
Would you get some help?
Now that our excuse for being in Iraq and Afghanistan is gone, how long will we continue spending resources and lives there?
Boehner just said he wanted us to stay in Iraq indefinitely. I think HE should pay for it out of HIS pocket.
Somebody's been watching Faux News...
they had a 'typo' on their screen that read 'OBama Bin Laden Dead'...an accident? snort...I seriously doubt it...considering the right wing mouths were immediately jumping on this and crediting Bush's groundwork for this...lol yeah he had all his energies directed towards...Iraq...and giving Al Quaeda a foothold there...genius, pure genius...
The sicking main excuse for being at Iraq and Afghanistan still exists, UN Nation Building Mission.
mynameisearlene!
My Dearest Earlene, I highly approve of your reference to Bloody Sarah!
Didn't know it was possble to say that... please be careful, don't want to lose you! - your joe
You and Palin share a big similarity.. a waste of good sperm.
Nobody cares what Palin thinks, she won't even place top 4 in the '12 Pubby Primary.
No go back in your hole, neo-con.
You'll NEVER get over the FACT that a democrat president did what you knuckle draggers couldn't.. find Bin Laden.

So, the compound was built in 2005, Bush was in office 3 more years, so are you saying they were just slow?
once again we pollute the ocean
That was one of my first thoughts when they described the burial at sea. I like seafood - but not Bin Laden tainted sea food. YUCK!
LOL! I now have one more excuse why I refuse to eat seafood! Thanks Sensible-1576081 and mynameisarlene!!!!
Some reactionary fascists are standing in line just to suck the snot out of his nose!
They are most aptly called "deathers"!
