I just watched the President's speech. He almost looked like he was in campaign mode. I did like the part where our guys went in and shot Bin Laden. I did not want to go through watching a prolonged expensive trial.

I have a feeling that they had an inside person at the mansion. Probably the one who tipped them off that Osama used the mansion as a safehouse time to time. They probably had been moving him around underground railroad style. All they had to do was wait till he showed up and the insider reported to intel contacts that he was verified there.

After becoming president he wound down the war in Iraq and escalated Afghanistan. George W. Bush stated several times that Bin Laden was not a priority. Obama decided that bin Laden was the "#1 priority" in the war on terror. He authorized the mission and the mission succeeded. In his speech he gave credit to the CIA, the military and even to W.

It's true that W spent more time overseeing Afghanistan operations but he clearly stated that bin Laden was "not a priority." President Obama made bin Laden his highest priority target in the war on terrorism. He has stepped up operations along the Pakistan border, he authorized this mission and the mission was accomplished.

Obama put the focus on Pakistan. Many said he was walking a fine line by allowing more drone strikes and covert ops into Pakistan. It looks like it paid off.

Give credit where it's due. If not for Obama, those he chose to lead the agencies/military branches involved, and the covert units, Bin Laden probably woudn't have been killed.

Obama probably deserves a little credit for putting political pressure on Pakistani leaders, to allow us to go in and kill Bin Laden.

I'll gladly confess. I'm not a graduate of West Point, Sandhurst, or any other military academy. I'm only an amateur history buff, so I'll gladly defer to your expertize in military tactics. Having said that, I'd like to ask you a question. Why has every single commander in Afghanistan, consistently requested more and more troops? Could it be that you're more proficient in and have more knowledge of military tactics, than any of them? Because if that's really the that case? I only wish I was there in person to have the privilege of shaking your hand.

I am glad that he is gone. Many thousands of innocent people have died as a result of his actions and influence and the lives of many more will carry scars both physical and emotional with them for the rest of their lives. Hope his death will close this terrible chapter in our recent history for good.

This is of course good news. What is significant is how we did it. No drone strikes or cruise missiles. Great job by our special forces. Great job by the President and choosing this way to get it done.

This has to be bad news for the Pakistan government. A lot of people obviously knew what was going on in this enormous compound. The President gave them credit for a tip, but I believe that was just being nice. Maybe someone in their government actually did provide some tip, but you have to ask why Pakistan's government didn't act. They have just lost any credibility they had and any future complaints they have about any of our actions there, have just lost any meaning whatsoever.

It would be nice to say that this ends things, but of course that would be wishful thinking. In fact, it's quite likely that this will trigger some attempted retaliation in the short term. What does appear positive though is that virtually all major governments are so far seeing this as a positive development. Even some in the Arab world.

It may take days for all this to settle in and who really knows where it will go. But, in a lot of respects, the timing is right for this to be a very positive thing. With a huge portion of the Arab world now seeking more democratic styles of government and protesting against leadership by strong arm tactics, maybe this will be an opportunity to reject getting attention through terrorist tactics. Maybe I'm being a bit optimistic, but I think that this happening today, has significantly different implications than it would have a year ago. Time will tell.

Kudos to all involved including the CIA and the US military with it's truly remarkable capabilities and dedicated individuals. Kudos also to our Commander in Chief for giving the go ahead for this daring mission. It would have been so easy to just level this compound from afar. But this is much more decisive, even if the results would have been the same.

Good riddance to that despicable wretch. Good that they buried him at sea; poses less of a lightning rod for muslim extremists to use to incite further violence, particularly against US interests. Also no grave for him to be worshiped at. I pray that this may mark the beginning of the end of Islamist terrorism, however unlikely.

That number is 47,000 killed or wounded. The actual coalition casualties were only about 15% of that grossly inflated number.

The reasons for burying his body at sea are specious. I don't suggest that it be placed on gruesome display but it would have been more appropriate to bring the body stateside for forensics and a group of respected medical examiners to make a final statement. The sea burial is going to raise many questions and fan flames of conspiracy that need not have been aroused.

Nope. Obama campaigned on taking it to al Qaeda in Afghanistan and pursuing them in Pakistan. Upon election, he called for recommendations from the military to do just that. The generals recommended more troops in Afghanistan, and Obama provided them. Obama also ordered an increase in the use of drones and covert ops in Pakistan, more than doubling the use by the previous administration. Obama also worked with Pakistan, who sent troops into several of the tribal areas in WAFA and NWFP, severely crippling the Taliban in South Waziristan and other areas. He ordered the CIA to make the capture or kill of bin Laden a top priority, and made sure the resources were made available.

And he succeeded.

I don't think you have a deluded memory; it seems that you were just hopelessly misinformed from the outset, and never bothered to apprise yourself of what Obama actually said and did. Opinion based on faulty information is worthless.

don, I'll be honest, I think that is a very cynical view. Going back to the time, I think Bush followed the advice he was being given in trying to nab Bin Laden at Tora Bora. The advice was flawed, based on a flawed assessment of the situation at Tora Bora, and so Bin Laden escaped. A lot of people deserve blame for that, but I think you have to be bordering on conspiracy theory to think anyone let Bin Laden purposefully escape.

We can argue the details but really, it is all hindsight now. There are policies of both Bush W. and Obama I don't support. Their actions in pursuit of Bin Laden from Afghanistan to Pakistan I did, do and will forever.

You keep on missing the whole point. Yes, we all remember that Bush started this war, you don't have to keep on repeating that. What people are trying to get you to understand is that Bush didn't get the job done. Long before the mission was ever accomplished, he found something else to distract him, namely Iraq and the WMD's. Once we went into Iraq, Afghanistan immediately became second fiddle, don't you remember? Obama, on the other hand, has been saying since even before he got elected, that he would put the focus back on Afghanistan and the hunt for Bin-Laden. Now do you get it?

But it was, to me, very clear that it was the wrong way to deal with the question. He simply should have stated that catching Osama Bin Laden was a top priority, and that he was still frustrated, but that he was doing everything in his power to catch him. Say it even if was a lie. I personally don't think it would have been a lie, but with history, those who wish to say Bush W. lost sight of the main objective have quite a bit of evidence. The Majority of Academy types arebased on Political Nominations (not based on earned previous proven Military Experience). At their time at the Academies they are taught Military Conventional Warfare, not the importance of Asymmetric Warfare (current and future Wars).

This is based on what they are trained to do as Conventional Warfare. As quantity to hold the Ground, and not quality to go after the enemy Asymmetric Warfare Fighters as skill versus skill.

The other Political Reason is that investing in the Longterm Training, Experience and Retention of US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (Decades); is not as popular as providing Jobs to manufacture expensive Conventional Warfare Equipment (Aircraft Carriers, SSBNs, Aircraft, etc.). This makes the Conventional Warfare Flag Officers (Generals and Admirals) more popular with US Congress (those that confirm nominations, promotions, etc.).

Also think about why some Generals and Admirals will throw US Military Personnel with minimal training and combat experience into a Asymmetric Warfare situation. If you say it is to gain experience, it is NOT, it is to justify their piece of the US Defense Budget during a time of PresidentialDefense Budget Cuts. Seriously, think about this, if the General's or Admiral's US Military Forces are chopped that puts the Generals or Admirals out of a Job.

I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became -- we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore. And if we -- excuse me for a minute -- and if we find a training camp, we'll take care of it. Either we will or our friends will. That's one of the things -- part of the new phase that's becoming apparent to the American people is that we're working closely with other governments to deny sanctuary, or training, or a place to hide, or a place to raise money.

And we've got more work to do. See, that's the thing the American people have got to understand, that we've only been at this six months. This is going to be a long struggle. karen, totally understand what you're saying, however, youtube also shows posts of interviews, news reports, and archived news reports...which is why some people are trying to link others to youtube...it's not totally illegitimate, but I definitely agree with you on youtube....videos are so easily manipulated, especially if they were posted by random people and not by the news companies themselves or the people of interest themselves...however you can learn alot from youtube, I've learned how to take apart a computer and replace parts and putting it back together with no problems, I learned how to do many things from youtube with its many useful posts from replacing a kitchen faucet to how to build your own car...the pros outweigh the cons in that type of case, so don't totally write off youtube...see for yourself, on whatever subject you want, from gardening to whatever it is you're interested in...

however, bush did shift his view from bin laden to saddam hussien...when people were telling him about bin laden before 9/11, he was quoted as saying he wasn't interested in swatting small flys, instead keeping his eyes on the ball in iraq...I believe he truly didn't care about bin laden and just went through the motions of at least appearing so...and when obama took over, he shifted the whole thing back to afghanistan and started withdrawal of iraq...and put the focus once more on bin laden...and what happened? It's history now, baby, and irrefutable...

If you do not want to avail yourself of the current information I don't understand why you are so convinced that you know what is going on.

I have no doubt whatsoever that you will spend the rest of your life chasing conspiracy theories and doubting any information from the government that does not suit your preconceived biases. You will, however, be disappointed over and over because those government officials have no responsibility to deliver to your doorstep any birth certificates, death certificates or any other proof that they are doing their jobs. I just happen to not believe what they are saying went down. I want to see proof of it before I believe, it does not have to be the picture of his brains hanging out but as you previously mentioned a still shot from the video taken during the raid of Osama before he was shot would be sufficient enough for me.

It is ok to not believe some things because they have to be careful about how much information is given - kind of the first rule of being in the CIA or even just regular law enforcement. It is hard to call what most of these people do as lying - it is a fine line between them.

I totally agree 4moreyears! In this computerized world, everybody wants everything now, and if they can't get it, well, something is wrong.

I have no doubt that once the dust settles and a little time goes by, all the briefings are done, and the White House and Pentagon have reviewed everything, that we will see much more in depth information from the folks involved. I fully expect to see a story on "60 Minutes" or some other news program that will have people involved in the mission tell their story. Maybe not the Seals themselves, to protect their identity, but perhaps the doctor that did the autospy, support crew for the Seal team, etc.

I remember a story where the troops who captured Saddam Hussein took the reporters back to the actual location and fully described what happened. I bet dollars to donuts something very similar will happen this time around too, in due time.

I will give Obama credit for finding and killing many of the Terrorist Leaders under his Administration. This is something Bush could not do---except for Saddam Hussein and his sons.

I had already gone to bed but woke up as the President was telling the world Bin Laden was dead. My first feelings as and american father of service members who serve were to rejoice. After a few moments to reflect my mood shifted to sorrow. I began to think of all those people who died so many years ago. Seeing people jumping from the towers to escape the fire. Then i thought of all the men and woman of our military who have givin thier lives in search for this one man and all the other liev lost along the way.

I don't care who takes , gives or gets credit for this. No one is a winner. We all lost. this only signals a page has been turned. A chapter closed.

Thank you Pres. Obama, you made it a priority afte Bush said he wasn't concerned about OBL. I was all for Afghanistan but against Iraq because the was just GWB avenging his daddys snub.

There will be reprisals, if not here then against the US military overseas. The sad part about something like the War on Terror is that it can become a never-ending cycle. You're saying Bush deserves the credit for this, not Obama, because he started this but you're also saying Pakistan has been playing us for the last six years. So Bush got played and couldn't catch UBL, but he deserves positive credit?

So I say to you, "Facts", that you can't give Bush credit for all the things he started in his term that eventually end up positive if, at the same time, you're willing to blame Obama for all the bad things Bush started that went worse. Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family nonetheless. When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice.

I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you, I think, do not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future.

In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose failure al- lowed this to happen and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. There will be heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably determined.

You see, the steel in us is not always readily apparent. That aspect of our character is seldom understood by people who don't know us well. On this day, the family's bickering is put on hold.

As Americans, we will weep; as Americans, we will mourn; and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that we cherish.

So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know what we're capable of.

You don't know what you just started.

But you're about to learn.

Faux News kept saying for an hour or so that he was killed last week. Then saying why did they wait a week before telling us, starting the rumors again.

FFinally they replayed Obama and changed their story as i had to watch Fox to see how they were going to spin the story.

They sure showed a lot of pictures of GWB, but he was in bed asleep.

ABC was saying the same things up until obama made his speech. NBC was reporting that it happened in NW pakistan near the afghan border and that it was a drone attack. ABC said that they didn't want to release the information till his DNA was matched with his sister who had died in Boston. That the FBI had a subpoena to claim her brain to make the match. It wasn't just FOX reporting things not checked out.

We should all know by now that the press usually wants the scoop everyone and doesn't wait till the facts are actually released.

It really isn't as important how it happened, but that bin laden is dead.

That day, no one was a democrat or a republican or mad because you were a black person or a white person or whatever, just American. The act that truly, truly brought us together for a moment was unspeakable as stated in the article. I must say that I had never felt that togetherness before nor have I since. I will try to remember that feeling when the rancor gets excessive as it surely will.

Following my comment at #2.99: I watched the Presidents live speech earlier. I managed to go over to the BBC press release board almost immediately after his announcement. It's was funny; the British press was releasing more information on the story and quicker than the US press. ( I was just busy and could not comment until now.)

I have been following the country Pakistan since 9/11. They are a brutal country---the Taliban hangs out there as well, (a haven for all Terrorist groups, including Iran) committing many Terrorist Acts.

The Past Leaders of Pakistan have been very much threatened with their lives from the Taliban?/Al Qaida that they will be assassinated. Many have stepped down because of this fear, and Ms. Bhutto was assassinated. Many have played both sides to save their lives.

Pakistan wants everything. They don't want to cooperate with definite action, thus hiding Osama Bin Laden there for many years. The US knew well Osama was living there---no help from the the Pakistani's, but their hands were always out for our money and Aid..

Credit to the group who was absolutely expert on targeting this mansion with high fences, barbed wire, in a suburban neighborhood with no Internet service--very suspicious. This Elite Group (Navy Seals?) have been patiently waiting since August for the "kill". Obama carefully monitored the correct time of this attack.

This will go down as a major coup of great proportions in the last 100 years here in the US. It is like killing a Hitler, Stalin, or a Mussollini.

It is time to celebrate, but after the euphoria, it will be a time of great caution for fear of more Terrorism against the US, especially Osama's inner cells living here in the US, and abroad.

Mission accomplished! We finally did what we went there to do. Now we can bring out troops home. There is no longer any reason to stay in Afghanistan.
