That would be pretty horrific, too -- you have to see fire ants in action to understand how bad they can be. Seriously vicious and persistent once they're on you.
Fire ants are actually bees. They can sting repeatedly. I am very allergic to them and have to carry an epi pen with me. The bites easily get infected and sores can last for months. Eeeesh!
Well, ants are closely related to bees. All the social insects are from the family formicidae. They also share the same chemical in their stings, formic acid, which causes the stings to be painful.
Wasps, bees, and fire ants are all part of a big order of insects referred to as Hymenoptera. The name refers to the insects' membranous wings. Not all of them possess stingers, but many do.
To say that Bees, Wasps and Ants are the same thing, as was stated above by some, is incorrect.
Ants are placed in a single family, the Formicidae. They belong to the order Hymenoptera, which includes bees, wasps, etc. This means that all of theses insects are related. It does not mean that bees are ants, because bees have about 8 or 9 different families, none of which is the Formicidae family.
To be in the same Order is not to be the same thing, merely similar and descended from some common ancestor, which is this case is wasps.
To offer a parallel example, both Humans and Gorillas are in the Primate Order, which also includes orangutans, chimpanzees and monkeys etc. because these are all pretty closely related. This does not imply that humans and gorillas are the same things.
Even to be in the same family is not always to be the same thing. For instance, chimpanzees, gorillas, humans and orangutans are all ALSO in the Family Hominidae, but, again, this does not mean that these animals are all the same, merely that they are closely related.
In fact, a chimpanzee, a human and a gorilla are all more closely related than a bee, an ant and a wasp, hence their classification as such by scientists.
I know they look like ants. Visually easy to categorize. Never the less, they are actually wingless bees. You are free to check it out. White vinegar is the best home remedy, applied quickly and with a good volume. Soak the bitten area (usually feet and toes) for 20 minutes. Won't solve it, but will help greatly.
What no one seems to have noticed was a son abandoned them and drove 15 miles away to get to a clear cell tower. I would have had my Parents in the car with me no matter what. I would have died there with them before I left them.
actual fire ants are true ants that sting, and are not very big. I think that the thing some people here are calling "fire ants" are the fuzzy, wingless ground wasps. that pack a much nastier sting than a bee.
@RustyboyFL - As a Registered Pharmacist, I recommend my customers use household AMMONIA, not vinegar. Ammonia will neutralize the Formic Acid from the sting, (fire and 'bites' are actually stings). That is why products such as AfterBite contain ammonia or a related chemical. Nothing will inactivate the other toxins in Fire Ant stings, they act like miniature Brown Recluse bites. (If you are not allergic, you might put some Triple Antibiotic ointment on the pustules, once they form.)
Bees, wasps, and ants belong to the same ORDER (Hymenoptera). They also belong to the same Suborder (Apocrita), separate from sawflies and horntails (Symphyta), based on whether they join the thorax and abdomen broadly or narrowly. The ants and wasps belong to the same Superfamily (Vespoidea), separate from the bees (Apoidea). They do not belong to the same Family.
Ants belong to the Family Formicidae. Wasps belong to several Families, such as the Vespidae (hornets, yellow jackets), Ichneumonidae, Braconidae, Mutillidae (velvet ants) and Sphecidae. Bees also fall into several Families, notably the Apidae (honeybees, bumblebees), Megachilidae (leafcutter bees), and Andrenidae.
Rustyboy, The best remedy I've found is that older type nail polish remover containing acetone, or just acetone itself. Just a dab on each bite and the pain goes away almost immediately and none of that 6 month itching and scratching.
I think they just meant to say....fire ants are actually (worse than) bees, because they can bite repeatedly....that statement makes sense...they just left something out.
Um, read the Old Testament. Your god is extremely violent and vengeful. His idea of "testing" someone's faith was to tell him to kill his son. Nice role model.
What are you talking about? Didn't you know that God had them killed? He was short on help in heaven and needed a few more angels to finish off a project he was working on.
Ahh, does that include the human race as well? I suppose I could see that but I know that's not what you meant.
Racist idiot.
How does it feel to know you descended from the black man? Oh, lemme guess, you think the earth is 5000 years old and that your grrrrrrrreat grand pappy was named Adam.
People don't seem to realize that the difference betwen black and white are climate and the bodies natural ability to adapt to it for survival over time.
And once again people who attack someone's belief in God are just the biggest a-holes. Are you sure you have a Mother do you have pics of you as a fetus in her. Did you do DNA testing? You could have been given to the wrong person. To stomp on someone else'seliefs is not only ignorant but immature.
Are you sure your children are yours? Do you believe they really love you? Maybe they don't understand that and only are not biting the hand that feeds them. What beliefs give you comfort that you don't have physical proof of?
How does it feel to know you descended from the black man?
Perhaps, but whites learned to farm, build and improve themselves and their surroundings since then (not to mention, sending aid and money to yours). Your kind are still catching dinner with sticks and dancing around fire. Yup, we're jealous.
rbj - actually, the Africans, Native Americans and Asians all were building pyramids, and vast trading centers while most of the white Europeans were still huddling in mud and cow patty huts with thier pigs and chickens. Don't know what school you went to, but you should get your money back.
This is a horrific story. Very sad endings for these elderly folks.
Some of the comments are unrelated and are also disturbing...but so,too, is the censorship by Sally.
Censorship is a growing threat in this country and will never resolve our societal failings. Blocking ones freedom to express their views, whether we agree or not, is a dangerous trend, because doing so assumes your moral superiority over everyone else. Censorship can also block us from learning about the "moral" and "immoral" compasses of our citizens.
While I partially agree, there are also rules and regulations that you agree to when you become part of the Vine. If you don't like it, go elsewhere. There are people who can debate and have discussions without bringing racial hate into everything. It's a moot point to complain about censorship when you agree to the terms and conditions set before you.
Lyrica, Censorship is a slippery slope. It is a growing threat. I probably wouldn't have commented if I saw consistency from the Vine's "censorship board".
There are more intelligent and "moral" viner's posting than not. A few wise responses, from you and others, to a inappropriate post would serve much better than censorship. It scares me more to see people silenced and you may be next.
Lyrica, I have read many crude comments here on the Vine that I did not agree with. But I do not want them deleted, because that is the posters opinion. yes there are Vine rules concerning personal attacks on others, and that has been enforced in the past. But lately there has been more and more removal of posts or banning of accounts because the remark was deemed cruel or not popular.
I have posted remarks only to have someone write the most crude replies they could think of. But it is up to me to find an appropriate reply, or simply ignore it. I find it better to leave that reply in place as a record that this is the person's style of posting.
As I said, I partially agree. The wise responses to idiot statements shouldn't be removed. But responses that bring about hate and are said merely as a way to get a rise out of people or insult others, I don't know, personally I don't want to see but then ignoring is a better way. Again though, if you agree to it in the EULA or whatever the rules are here, you can't really complain about it. Going on about politics or religion in an article that implies none, is a waste of time and effort, I can't fault them for deleting it.
Every article, from every source, on Newsvine has people associating that topic to both religion and politics. Annoying? very much so. But.. they are not attacking anyone personally. If I say "God is Phony". Someone will not like it and want that deleted. If I say "God is Great" someone else will not like that. is it up to the moderators feelings to judge what gets deleted? They should be following the written rules to avoid someones post being removed just because people didn't like it. You can the sky is blue, and someone here will counter your post, every time. JM's point on wanting to see consistency from the vine board is dead on.
I wish I could say that they aren't attacking anyone personally. Some aren't, I'm ok with that. Some do. I can't begin to count how many people have personally attacked me because of my thoughts and viewpoints. Do I mind it? No not really, they don't mean much to me, but I've seen many many others personally attacking people simply because they are religious or have a different political party. You can tell me God isn't great all you want and I won't mind it, that's your viewpoint and I respect that. Telling me what you believe and slamming me for my beliefs are two very different things.
When a person resorts to verbal abuse instead of conversation and debate, then yes I believe a moderator should do what they deem necessary. Consider it as a class room debate. When you get out of hand and personally attack someone, then yes you should be asked to leave. Sure there is a freedom of speech, but again, when you come on here and agree to conduct yourself in a professional, respectful manner, then you do so. You may counter my post all you want, I love debating, but again when you personally attack, call names, insult others,....it's not debating at that point.
See my deleted post below this topic? I came on here when there were about 3 other posts and wrote "Obamas fault, I was first!". It was clearly a joke and sarcasm poking fun at those who insist on blaming the president for every news event they read. Up until it was deleted I had over 20 Likes from people who got the reference and humor. But it got deleted. Maybe it seems off topic, though it depends on how you look at it. Its not the greatest loss as it's just a silly joke. But the point is it was deleted because someone didn't agree with it. It certainly was not a personal attack on anyone here, was it?
"Sticks and stones, blah, blah, BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME". What has happened to this old saying?
Be afraid of censorship, not ignorance. Words, whether you agree or disagree, cannot physically harm anyone.
I have lived long enough to see the decimation of free speech and the advent of "thought police", political correctiveness and excessive public punishment for bad words. I cannot say that our society is winning the battle against ignorance by censorship.
I actually did not see your deleted post. I wish there could be a sarcasm font, but I agree, it did sound more like a joke then an actual comment on the president, I would think most people could get that. No, I understand why you would be upset at that, it wasn't meant to be intentionally cruel, so deleting it was a bit over the top. Joking on the vine and being intentionally abrasive are two different things. To me, if they deleted you it seems like an abuse of power. But there are people out there that need to have their posts deleted because they are OBVIOUSLY being crass.
JM~ Ignorance can cause mass misfortune, anyone who isn't worried about it is ignorant themselves. Having an open mind is better then a closed one any day.
Ah I see, JM, yes I agree. Ignorance is something to be afraid of a good portion of the time, though some people who are ignorant of a certain topic can change once educated or given another viewpoint, and are able to think for themselves. What I fear most is a closed mind. There is no black and white in this world, those that only see that are closed to all possibilities, that's my personal opinion.
People react differently to situations. While some post overly dramatic responses, others think up jokes than seem insensitive. Who am I to tell them that they should feel exactly as I at that moment. There is another post earlier with posters that seem to feel the same as what we have posted here, stating Newsvine has gone to the crapper with the banning and collapsing of opinions just because they don't fit someone's idea of "right".
I for one need to find open dialog to reposnd to. If this place turns into a site where only "god bless them" style posts are allowed, I am out. This, I imagine, is the true issue here. Something the Newsvine managers need to address. How they percieve their business being viewed in the future is in question.
G, i recently stepped on a fire ant mound (it was under grass) and before i knew it, my leg was covered to my knee. i jumped into a creek and it didn't wash them off. i was screaming and jumping (and crying).......that could not be as bad as being stung to death by bees. i feel so very sorry for the couple.
Dbolt #5.2,Play with their little private parts for awhile should do it. Seriously, far more often than not, the first you know that life for you has taken a sudden turn for the worst is a sudden feeling akin to an electrical shock. The boss ant yells "fire in the hole" and all the peon ants seem to bite you at once. Long before I found out about using acetone to neutralize the toxins, I made the mistake of sitting down on a fire ant mound (I was new to Texas and never even heard of fire ants). About all you can do is slap the hell out of them and hope you can kill them before they decide to bite you again, then get a can of Acetone from the hardware store and put a dab on each bite. Acetone should also work on bee and jellyfish toxins as they have quite similar chacteristics. I've used vinegar on jellyfish stings, and the dubious relief isn't worth smelling like an Italian salad, but acetone works like a charm.
@canemah, I'll have to look into trying that acetone out! I get bit by fire ants almost every year, hate the suckers! Last year I was walking the dogs and didn't realize I was standing on a mound when I stopped because it was under the grass.. darn things got me under my socks too. If I get enough stings in a small area, I swell up big time although I've never had a true "allergic" reaction to them. I feel for anyone getting bit/stung, etc that many times!
Amen, Lyrica. To have lived as long as they did, well into their 90s, it's such a shame to know they ultimately died in such a horribly painful way. May they both rest in sweet, sweet peace!
Boy, the trolls are out today. Africanized bees are horrible. You don't know if thy are regular honey bees until they attack since they are so aggressive.
Why is everyone calling these bees 'africanized' bees. The article never stated that they were africanized bees, it said they were probably africanized bees. So they could have been asianized bees, eurobees or even latin americanized bees.
And if they were africanized bees, why does that make them bad? We have an africanized president, and he's not killing anyone (except Lybians) and of course our country and the economy.
Why is it necessary to try and make this a racial thing?? The Bee's originate from Africa just like crocodiles in Florida. If I come from Wyoming are you going to try and call me a Texan? Get a grip! It was a horrible way to die for anyone I don't care who you are and my heart goes out to them.
Um...for a while now it has been a concern that African bees (i.e. from Africa) are intermingling with reg bees....African bees are more aggressive...hence they make new generations of more aggressibve bees...it has NOTHING to do w/race...it's just like saying something about an African lion or a Chinese panda...stop trying to put a political and/or racist bent in the mix...
LOL Kaylaln! And don't forget about the liberal main stream media that will not once, ever, report any negatives or even investigate Obama and shenanigans.
Brickwall, here's a little hint: Google the word "sarcasm" and learn about what it is.
KaylainWisconsin - You need a course in entomology. They are called africanized killer bees because these mean bees from Africa mated with the more calm european bees and the result is africanized killer bees. They are not fire ants. Fire Ants make mounds in your lawn in Texas after heavy rains and they don't buzz, nor do they fly. But the africanized killer bees will chase you to a pond and will wait for you to surface so they can kill you. If you suspect you have africanized killer bees you need to call an exterminator who can use a foam to kill them. We have them in Arizona and just pray that they don't go further north.
The possibility of them being African bees is important. Colony collapse disorder is a mysterious epidemic that is decimating native honey bees, but Africanized honeybees seem to be resistant to the disease. For this reason, we are likely to see more African bees and fewer native bees... both through natural selection as CCD kills off native bees and African bees survive, and because beekeepers will resort to using African bees intentionally when they cannot keep their native bees alive.
You don't know if thy are regular honey bees until they attack since they are so aggressive.
Well, you kinda do know if you're in Texas, they're africanized. Not all africanized bees are aggressive though... it all depends on their particular genetic makeup as well as whether or not they feel threatened. Honey bees have two sets of genes that control the agressiveness, and most euro-bees have neither or only one of those genes switched on (with the exception of German black bees which are every bit as aggressive as african bees are), while african bees have both sets switched on. Each gene that is switched on represents roughly 20 times more willingness to sting, so bees with both genes switched on are 40 times more willing to sting than bees with neither gene switched on.
The difference between african bees and africanized bees are that africanized bees are mixed genetics between african and european honey bees, and with that mix there is no guarantee that both those aggressive genes will be switched on. In addition, unless the bees feel that the queen or larva are in danger, they will almost never become aggressive, regardless of genetic disposition.
At any rate, pretty much all the honey bees in TX are africanized except for the managed hives where the beekeepers order mated euro-queens from up North or from Hawaii.
Β at 87 my father was attacked when he was about to till a garden area...he dropped the tiller and it raised dust which being very close to a bee hive got sucked into the hive the bees attacked ... he put the tractor in gear and drove it straight into the walnut tree...he then ran but got his cane stuck between his legs and broke his left theigh bone...the bees then engulfed him... a neighbor happened to luckily see this and screamed at another neighbor and both ran down to help him... all were stung.. the doctors told me they stopped counting after removing 216 stingers from him... he told me "they were up my nose in my ears everywhere ... I knew I was dead"Β that first night in the hospital he had a heart attack on top of it all...but he lived.Β The bees were not africanized but prior to him returning to the home we gave the hives to a rancher in the area... he lived to 94 and died in his rocker at home...Β hope i have his tough genes.
Yellow jackets chased me and stung through my hair and several got into my ears. I have never been so scared and I am a rodeo photographer and regularly am out in front of bulls!
@JLM,The domestic honey bee(apis mellifera)origins are in italy,"our" native species are the likes of bumble bees,a more ancient order but their hive capacity and honey production is limited. The African hybrid was produced as the african bee has a longer tounge, collects more nectar, more honey production-negative much more aggressive.Keep in mind the "regular"honeybees have a temper as well, once stings are being delivered a pheromone is released and more bees are activated to attack(defend).Terrible what happened to these folks,i was a beekeeper 4yrs,the worst thing you can do is run around wildly flailing,my boss often wore no safety gear, rarely ever wear gloves and i have seen him dump a swarm cluster into a hive box with no safety gear. Its easy to say-and i have done it many, many times-keep your cool-move"calmly"but quickly out of the area, cover your head with shirt or jacket, get in your vehicle or get a bit of distance before you bolt and start swatting,if you start swinging and running in circles(bees are allready agitated cause you violated their hive)panic is a killer(like drowning)
Why do some people always make everything about race? Couldn't you just have said that some stinging insects chased you? What, are yellow jackets more evil than red jackets or white jackets? Do you have some hidden rascist agenda against yellow jackets. What about down jackets, I suppose you hate those too.
I just wish people would leave their hateful rascist remarks for some other format and stick with the real issue here: 'Illegal, undocumented, african bees who were smuggled into America through mexico by coyote bees who stole all their honey and left them stranded in the desert!
@Kay the Yankee - patA called them Yellow Jackets because that's what they were. There are no white or red jackets, either. (Most bees are a little fuzzy, though, while Yellow Jackets aren't.)
The only reason the African Bees go across the border is because they are doing jobs for retired Yankees who moved down south that won't pay American Bees a fair wage. ;-p
Unless a person is allergic to bee venom, it takes quite a few stings to kill a person. 500 honey bee stings is roughly equal to one rattle-snake bite. However, if a person is allergic to bee venom, as little as 1 sting can be fatal. But for most adults it takes between 1,000 and 2,000 stings to be fatal... of course, a colony of honey bees will generally have between 20,000 and 60,000 bees in it, so they have no problem producing that many stings in a relatively short period of time if they really want to.
We have Africanized bees in FL, and they tell us that if attacked we should run as fast as we can to the nearest building because they will not stop attacking even if you jump into water-instead they will just wait for you to surface and sting you when you come up. I have family in AZ, where they also have Africanized bees, and they have been told exactly the same thing. Africanized bees apparently don't behave the same way other bees do-once they are triggered to attack they just keep attacking. Your only defense is to get out of there, and most people can run faster than they can fly. Apparently they do become disoriented inside a building.
I feel your father's pain. The same thing happened to me while running a weed trimmer. I was lucky and had a building I could run to so I could get away from the bees. I was stung so many times it made me nauseous.
Africanized bees apparently don't behave the same way other bees do-once they are triggered to attack they just keep attacking.
It's not really all that different... the main difference is their level of aggression... and once they smell the alarm phermone, they will keep attacking whatever or whereever it's coming from... so when you jump in a pool, they still smell the alarm phermone and the water just washes it up to the surface where the bees will be looking for whatever being caused the alarm phermone to be released (by stings).
If you run into an air conditioned building, the quick change from warm to cool air will temporarily stun them, giving you a chance to get free of them and kill any that made it inside with you.
There is still compassion in America. Unfortunately there are a handful of people with nothing better to do who troll all these forums just to write hateful comments. They may or may not be Americans. Doesn't matter. Ignore them and eventually when do one reacts to their nonsense. they'll slither away.
An important question Chris Allen-502031! Compassion and Mercy. Just read many of the posts on the "Vine." They are full of hate. Do people go out of their way to be "haters?"
Decades back, ( maybe in the 50's) I was doing business in India. I had stopped in a town for the night. At dinner I sat next to a man. He was a little dude, wearing a red silk robe and he knew the menu. Over dinner he said to me; "In order to build a perfect world we must show a little mercy and compassion." I found, the next morning on my way out of town, the little dude was the Dalai Lama.
I don't know if all of these people go out of their way to be haters but I'm sure some do. I think a lot of the trolls posting vile comments do so because of the anonymity. Others get caught up and think they're funny and think the rest of us are just thin-skinned. Still others lack compassion and can't put themselves in the shoes of others. It's a shame but I personally believe that they represent the minority of folks.
I hope a few of the posters read your message and think twice before making more of their hateful comments.
Yes, these sad deaths have been turned into a conversation about compassion. How easy it is to make snarky comments and remain nameless and faceless. I am sorry to say chris, we should just stop reading the comments of others altogether.
a lot of the trolls are very sad people. they have no life and some live in their mama's basements. no ambitions other than being hateful to well-meaning posters.
Why is everyone joking about this ederly couple that was killed?!!! America has more to worry about than just killler bees. Americans have become cold, selfish and uncaring!
May this couple rest in peace.
I love how US Consumers think they are the only "Americans." They have no concept of the Geography of the world. They have no idea that "America" is one hell of a land mass which contains American countries other than the "U.S."
The proper name of people living in the US is not "American," but rather, "US Consumers."
Did I miss something? I didn't think Andrews comment was offensive I thought he was being sarcastic, I appreciated him standing up for the Americans that Rose slammed.
Thanks Andrew.. we are NOT all heartless and uncaring.
Hey John265. Their dead butthead!! They are not in anymore pain!!
And yes the the internet is worldwide. But I do travel around the world quite a bit. And other countries seem to be more compasionate than the the US. So, more than likley the ugly mean comments are coming from Americans, or Americans that live in other countries!!!
Not all of us are like that, but you probably are!!! Right, born-in-the-usa? I mean look at the mean comment you posted to me?!! And I don'nt even know you!!
Then you fail to notice patterns of certain posters who just piggy back on to people's posts to just make snide comments, while not providing anything of value or relevance.
I also think that people are pretty out of touch if they don't see that our society is in the @!$%#ter and more and more people have stopped being simply.. human.
Not my fault you failt to notice things. You might catch on eventually, otherwise, I expect you'll be baited some day soon.
Did I miss something? I didn't think Andrews comment was offensive I thought he was being sarcastic, I appreciated him standing up for the Americans that Rose slammed.
Thanks Andrew.. we are NOT all heartless and uncaring.
You are correct; unfortunately sarcasm is difficult for many people to recognize or understand - online or off. Not all Americans are bad people, but it feels like bad people are among the noisiest.
I sincerely doubt that everyone in these forums who are nasty are actually truly nasty people in person. The Online Disinhibition Effect provides a psychological view of some causes that would influence how people behave differently online than in face-to-face communications.
I suspect people who incessantly post hateful comments are in a great deal of pain.
Don't let their pain become your pain. You know most of the Americans you meet every day are decent, caring people. But it's true that more and more of us are becoming overloaded with hurt and stress, and then it becomes easy to lash out -- especially given the anonymity of the Internet.
As for trolls, many have probably come to believe that negative attention is better than no attention.
Attention Rose.........Capitalism breeds greed, money love, self interest, jealousy, hate, and many other conditions and negative feelings.and you are right it has always been here and it is just getting to be more so..!!! Also, I think that Desederata was written by a blind minister, do you see dog fights.?? do you see Bear Baying.???? Do you see religious people knowingly commit stupid sins..???America stinks because politicians allow all this crap to ferment..I have taken your comment to have meaning. OVER.!!!
i work undercover (free) to find dogfights. i do have to see a lot of negatives but then something positive comes out when i save a kennel of dogs from being torn to death in the ring. and our community does a fantastic job adopting the dogs that are adoptable.
and our community does a fantastic job adopting the dogs that are adoptable.
Which shouldn't be any that were rescued from a dog fighting operation... that's how we end up with stories about kids being killed by dogs that suddenly turn on them.
I agree it wouldn't hurt to be more respectful but many people only post on line to be mean anonymously. This is a terrible way to go but at least they lived full lives I guess. :(
how can a intelligent person respect ignorance, godworshiping, human flesh eating and human blood drinking, these are sick people led by the sickest of the sickest in human society. Lenin said "religion is the opium of the masses" He got that right if wrong about everything else.
Thank you SO much. I can't do things like that, and I feel so guilty that I can't, but I'm just not strong enough. Even to read about an animal hurt or abused makes me literally sick for days. God Bless people like you who are strong enough to do it, and will.
I do regularly donate to various animal aid organizations, and if yours needs donations, just send me an email and I'll be honored to help. Thanks again for your wonderful work.
I am also of the opinion that this site is going in to the crapbox. You have trolls come out with inflammatory posts, and then you have people react. Moderator comes in and shuts down 4 people. Troll gets sexual satisfaction, adrenaline rush or whatever feeling they get that compels them to come here. Therefor, eventually, all that will be left will be trolls.
Yup, time for a new hobby. No more intelligent conversation and/or discussion to be had here. It's all politics, race wars, class wars and psychotic posts created to incite people whenever there is no place for it.
I agree. Too much police-ing. Getting tiring. I see nothing wrong with some of the above posts that are collapsed. And if someone wants to come on here and call me an idiot because that is their way of showing disagreement, more power to them. It doesn't have to be deleted.
Definitely; another of the moderators, Tyler, seems to give a warning before suspending people so that they have a chance to correct themselves properly rather than being hit over the head with a suspension out of the blue and immediately.
And if someone wants to come on here and call me an idiot because that is their way of showing disagreement, more power to them.
Sometimes the best way to deal with people who continuously bait you is to just ignore them since that really gets to them far more than responding aggressively -- they feel the need to be acknowledged. Not everyone deserves to be suspended or have their posts deleted, but there are some who really do need to go due to their continual harassment.
I also agree that it is very annoying to see people collapse posts just because they disagree with them. The flagging options to collapse posts are "No Value," "Inflammatory," and "Advertising," and people need to realize that if something upsets them because it disagrees with them then it is not inherently "no value" or "inflammatory."
This is the miracle cure....put wet tobaco on the sting...cover with duct tape..(won't fall off with moisture)......no reaction---- pain gone.....it sucks all the poison out!
I'm highly allergic also...i'ts the recipe of my friends granny from Tennesse...works no lie!
Baking soda doesn't help with the swelling ...it just helps with the burning feeling. I'll have to look up this tobacco treatment...I'm a little skeptical though...
tobacco works. we don't smoke but we keep a small bag of rolling tobacco in our first aid kit. My grandfather grew up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky and taught us this trick. We don't use the duct tape, just some gauze and tape.
If your throat doesn't immediately close up and suffocate you long before you could ever even try that, then you're not allergic... you just don't know the difference between being allergic and having redness, swelling and pain. redness, swelling and pain with itching the next few days are the normal, NON-allergic reactions... anaphilactic shock is the allergic reaction, and it's not to be triffled with and people who go into anaphilactic shock should NEVER mess arround with your home remedy and should immediately inject the first epi-pen dose and head straight to the hospital emergency room when stung.
Being allergic to bee stings is a FATAL condition when stung, not simply, oh I'm in pain and localized swelling... no... it's serious business and giving out advise for those people to do anything other than administering an epi-pen and heading to the hospital will end up getting someone killed.
There are plenty of remedies for the normal redness, swelling, pain and itchiness though... a little wad of chewed plantain leaf will do the trick for example. I'm sure tobacco does just as good a job. But that's just for normal people, not people who are allergic who need immedate emergency care to keep from dieing.
Z1P2 is correct. If you are allergic to bee stings, you are also allergic to jellyfish stings. If you are truely allergic to these toxins and do not have an an epi-pen with you at all times, you're are simply playing russian roulette with a full cylinder. On the dive boat I ran, we always asked the passengers as a group if anyone was allergic to bee stings. If someone was and didn't have an epi pen, they weren't allowed in the water. No exceptions.
Oh My God, this couple could have been your parents or grand parents. Not one of the sorry jokes about illegal imigrant bees was the least bit funny. Not in pprint. Think it if you like, but not in print.
The possibility that these were Africanized bees is especially disturbing, considering the epidemic of Colony Collapse Disorder among native bees. African bees seem to be resistant to it, meaning that "bee immigration" has the serious potential to change the demographics of honeybees in the U.S. to a more aggressive lot.
I see that John has just discovered the internet. Time to sit behind your keyboard and insult random people, no doubt laughing hysterically as you do so.
John: Please learn to use only one punctuation mark at the end of sentences, and also, please learn how to not be hated by everyone you come across.
Is Obama going to grant amnesty to the bees to gain their votes? They are illegal immigrants i think.
On a serious note, it's not as painful as you think. After a few stings your body starts pumping out adrenaline and serotonin and you just drift off into unconsciousness.
Please, what is all the buzz about? How about the family that went to Yellowstone Park and the dad decided to shoot film of a large grizzly eating the bread the mom was throwing illegally out of the drivers side window. The dad was sitting on the passenger side window and leaning over the top of the car to shoot the film. He decided to get a better view, so he climbed out and walked to the back of the car. The mom and kids were telling him to be careful; then oops, mom ran out of bread. The bear raised up about 10 feet and came down right on top of the dad. It was the grossest thing you will see on Youtube. The bear kept biting at the mans abdomen area while the dad was kicking a screaming. Finally the bear ripped all of his entrails out, then bit off his arm and ran into the woods. It was all filmed by another car parked 10 feet away. Check it out, you'll watch it 10 times.
Brewsky23, I really hope your info is right and these poor elderly folks suffering stopped quickly. I can't imagine how horrifying it would be to have a swarm of killer bees attack you. This is such a sad story, I honestly hope their pain didn't last long before they succumbed.
To all the trolls making jokes about this, you're pathetic. Have some respect! If it weren't for the elderly none of my generation or the following generations would even be here.
NOT TRUE!! I was stung hundreds of times as a child and spent hours in agony while stingers were removed and I did not slip into unconsciousness!!! It would have been a HORRID way to die!!
NOT TRUE!! I was stung hundreds of times as a child and spent hours in agony while stingers were removed and I did not slip into unconsciousness!!! It would have been a HORRID way to die!!
Most beekeepers today are well into retirement age and have no problems taking many stings. I myself have been stung close to a hundred times in a day and never lost consciousness and the last one hurt as much as the first.
It most likely took several minutes of frenzied stinging all the while they would have been in extreme agony feeling like their skin was on fire but possibly worst of all is that the bees would have particularly focused on their faces stinging at the eyes, nose and mouth, and likely even inside the mouth. The last time I heard of a horse being killed by honey bees there were two pounds of bees in the horses esophagus and lungs... which is several thousand bees. Being stung to death is, I assure you, not a pleasant way to go.
Looks to me like America also needs to remember her sense-of-humor. Being stung to death, while morbidly tragic,, has that certain poetic one-in-a-million factor about it that lends itself well to a humorous quip or two....like all the jokes about that fellow repeared struck by lightening....
In Southern California I saw a basket ball sized mass of killer bees on a post of a chain-link fence next to a job-site trailer and the bees attached my car when I pulled up to it and EOD staff showed up with a flame thrower to torch these bees. These bees are no joke and will straight take you down.
usually they use a vacuum. I saw that done at my neighbors. They went on vacation to Europe for a month and come home to a house of bees. they called an exterminator and they brought in a vacuum. It worked!
In Southern California I saw a basket ball sized mass of killer bees
If it was in SoCal, and the swarm was basketball sized, and it was in spring, it was more likely a swarm from one of the 2.5 million european honey bee hives that are brought into Cali to pollenate the almond crops. Africanized bees usually have smaller swarms but swarm more frequently and at all times of the year.
Glad I live up North...I hope New England is too cold for them!
I know a few beekeepers in Alaska... so don't bet on it.
so, the son got into his truck and left his parents to be stung to death. nice son, saved his own skin, couldn't wait for his parents. must have knocked them aside in his rush to get to the truck and get away. wow, the wonder never ceases...
Miaw, you're a dip$hit! You read this @!$%#ty little article and you think you know evrything there is to know about the man and what he had to go through, and the (possibly)agonizing desicions he had to make. You are an idiot.
You're supposed to run away and not help anyone else...if he had tried to help them he'd probably have been stung to death as well. Sometimes, there is only so much you can do.
Well, Miaw, if you read the advice from experts near the end of the article, it says to "run away and don't stop to help others.", also known as the "George Costanza maneuver"
That's just awful. The elderly are very susceptible to this kind of thing. We lose old folks down here to fire ants every once in a while.
Eeeesh!
Fire ants are NOT bees! WTH?
I think what he meant to write, was that bee stings are like fire ant bites and can be deadly.
At least that is what I deciphered from it. I think?
But then again, he could be a nutcase and has no clue.
@Lora-2955908...Fire ants ARE a member of the wasp and bee family. Look it up.
Well, ants are closely related to bees. All the social insects are from the family formicidae. They also share the same chemical in their stings, formic acid, which causes the stings to be painful.
But, no....ants are not bees.....
Awful way to check out.....
I've been attacked by ants before, horrible horrible deal there. I haven't experienced anything worse.
Politics and idiots aside, rest in peace and my prayers rest with the family of the deceased.
P.S. Fire ants are indeed part of the wasp/bee family.
No, fire ants are ants. The velvet ant which is often called a fire ant is a form of wingless wasp.
I was attacked ny an aunt once.....I think she was a bee keeper.
WOW! You learn something new everyday. I will go look it up. Dang!
Wasps, bees, and fire ants are all part of a big order of insects referred to as Hymenoptera. The name refers to the insects' membranous wings. Not all of them possess stingers, but many do.
Shame on you nasty posters, but then again this is a Liberal posting site. Not to surprised....
Wasp, bees, and ants...who cares the little F@#! hurt like hell, and obviously kill.
Justin drake...are you trying to tell me I am more a gorilla than an ant is a bee? lol... just pokin' some fun towards your way.
@ pelletman
only if you believe scientists aren't lyin to us about scientific nomenclature ;)
I would have died there with them before I left them.
always someone, who only knows what he reads, to condemn someone who was doing the best he could.
karma is a bitch, Jorge.
actual fire ants are true ants that sting, and are not very big. I think that the thing some people here are calling "fire ants" are the fuzzy, wingless ground wasps. that pack a much nastier sting than a bee.
look up "velvet ant"
not that a true fire ant sting is a pleasant experience either
"not that a true fire ant sting is a pleasant experience either"
It's not. I've been stung hundreds of times over a two year period. There is a reason they have that name.
My heart goes out to this couple. This was not without pain.
But what about Aunt Bea?
rolls his eyes "HAHAAHA!"
Rustyboy, The best remedy I've found is that older type nail polish remover containing acetone, or just acetone itself. Just a dab on each bite and the pain goes away almost immediately and none of that 6 month itching and scratching.
Comment # 1 deleted. Complete derail that led the discussion into politics and slap fighting.
This article is about bees.
I think they just meant to say....fire ants are actually (worse than) bees, because they can bite repeatedly....that statement makes sense...they just left something out.
I don't know if ants are bees, but i'm pretty sure that most WASPs are Republicans :)
I heard about this on the news this morning. Sad, rest in peace and GOD Bless.
Which GOD are you using to bless them ? My god can whip your gods ass!!!
That is nice John because my God is not violent; not sure about yours or is it just you that is violent.
the lord Jesus Christ and may he bless these people with all his heart amen
Um, read the Old Testament. Your god is extremely violent and vengeful. His idea of "testing" someone's faith was to tell him to kill his son. Nice role model.
sickofthishazit
What are you talking about? Didn't you know that God had them killed? He was short on help in heaven and needed a few more angels to finish off a project he was working on.
Nothing good ever came out of Afica
Really nasty, Skyking.
"Nothing good ever came out of Afica"
Moron can't even spell. Surprise!
Skyking-2463703 learn how to spell.
Not familiar with Afica...smh!
mitochondrial eve...some people just can't accept it TOM....
Try to stay on subject please...
Why are all of the best comments collapsed by the community
@tombones
Perhaps, but whites learned to farm, build and improve themselves and their surroundings since then (not to mention, sending aid and money to yours). Your kind are still catching dinner with sticks and dancing around fire. Yup, we're jealous.
rbj, you are a small and shallow person. and ignorant.
patA
I second your comment.
I heard a lot of people got stung by aunt bee
rbj - actually, the Africans, Native Americans and Asians all were building pyramids, and vast trading centers while most of the white Europeans were still huddling in mud and cow patty huts with thier pigs and chickens. Don't know what school you went to, but you should get your money back.
Whoa, RBJK! You didn't just take a sad story about 2 elderly people getting stung to death, to spew racial vomit? Get a life and get a heart.
I feel for the family of these hard working people! They are free from their burdens now, and may you find peace.
Skyking-2463703 and rbjk0174s, you are both suspended for a day for making racist comments and violating rule # 5 of the Code of Honor.
tombones, patA, and JerseyGirl1947, please do not respond to comments with personal attacks, regardless of what they are.
Inflammation as in a fire ant sting?
This is a horrific story. Very sad endings for these elderly folks.
Some of the comments are unrelated and are also disturbing...but so,too, is the censorship by Sally.
Censorship is a growing threat in this country and will never resolve our societal failings. Blocking ones freedom to express their views, whether we agree or not, is a dangerous trend, because doing so assumes your moral superiority over everyone else. Censorship can also block us from learning about the "moral" and "immoral" compasses of our citizens.
Thanks and well said JM, I have stated the same in the past.
Lyrica: There seems to be a malfunction on the Vine today. I was unable to save my revisions with my last posting.
What I meant is "Be afraid of censorship as much as ignorance". I agree that ignorance (or a lack of knowledge) is a societal problem.
Ironically, this conversation seems to be the most decent and respectful one on this page. :)
Lol true enough. Just goes to show that people can have debates and still be respectful, even if it has nothing to do with the article itself. Cheers.
I enjoyed the off-topic discussion, too.
But when I glance at this news headline, I'm reminded of the horror these people experienced. I don't think the son will ever get over this.
Perhaps our off-topic rant was a way to avoid, even briefly, the reality of these folk's nightmare-come-true.
I agree, Tony from NJ.
Gah! I would rather have my hair set on fire and be put out with a sledge hammer than stung todeath...
What did u do to get them off?
Comment # 4, # 6 and# 7 deleted. Political derails.
I have never tried acetone, but ammonia definitely works and you won't get the nasty blisters either.
Those poor people, I can't even imagine the terror and pain they went through. I hope they rest in peace.
I think at some point shock sets in and divine intervention takes over. We are never alone...
Yes, Deb, they're out. They're out because they know they'll never meet any of us in person. I've seen killer bees kill livestock. Not very nice.
And if they were africanized bees, why does that make them bad?
If you are serious - your thought process is really mixed up.
I very much agree with you.And feel very sorry for the old couple.
Eh, crap way to die but those two old farts just outlived everyone posting on this. I think they did just fine.
@tombones
you're a dick
This a link for some information about the Africanized bee.
ο»Ώ
What Link??
DoubleD
Your an idiot!!!!
if we don't feed the trolls, they will leave. just put them on ignore. click the exclamation mark to the right of the posts.
DolphinBlood and Maggie-3351567, please mind # 1 of the Code of Honor in the future.
Thank you.

Geez!!! You could write a book on that one. I'm glad he recovered and was able to live out his live peacefully.
Lee- amazing story and so glad that he did survive too :0)
I am so glad he survived.
Apparently they do become disoriented inside a building.
lee,
I feel your father's pain. The same thing happened to me while running a weed trimmer. I was lucky and had a building I could run to so I could get away from the bees. I was stung so many times it made me nauseous.
Kaylain: Yellow jackets? Racist? Why? I'm confused.
I guess you've never been bitten by a black fly. (and this has nothing to do with racial origin, either!)
I can't believe how many ignorant, self serving comments!
where has the compassion in America gone?
You should all be ashamed of yourselves!
Exactly!
We should be compassionate Americans who judge others, just like you.
US Consumers don't have time for compassion. First off, they are too fat, secondly, there are sales over at Wal-Mart.
Hearing that Chris. Then you have posters like Andrew.
Talking about cocmpassion, did you read that part of the article where they advise people under bee attack to run for it and not try to help others?
MrCool: Love the story!
Is that just a story or did you really meet the Dalai Lama? Wish I could meet him, he is a very admirable and wise person!
The anonymity of the internet allow many members of society to expose themselves for what they truely are...pathetic pieces of assorted excrement.
You American-bashing morons shouldn't keep generalizing the entire country's population. There is still compassion here (in compassionate people).
put them on ignore and don't answer their posts!!
a lot of the trolls are very sad people. they have no life and some live in their mama's basements. no ambitions other than being hateful to well-meaning posters.
don't feed them!
Pathetic they are. Truly.
Troglodytes with computers.
Why is everyone joking about this ederly couple that was killed?!!! America has more to worry about than just killler bees. Americans have become cold, selfish and uncaring!
May this couple rest in peace.
Not to mention that we Americans love to generalize everyone.
Besides me..does it say near anyones screen name they are americans?
The internet is worldwide.
ok, I won't generalize. Andrew, you're an idiot!
I love how US Consumers think they are the only "Americans." They have no concept of the Geography of the world. They have no idea that "America" is one hell of a land mass which contains American countries other than the "U.S."
The proper name of people living in the US is not "American," but rather, "US Consumers."
Ah, Andrew is out a-trolling today. Good job Andrew. We noticed you, don't worry. Let me validate you. Goood Jobbb.
Go away.
would you rest in peace if you were stung by a 1000 bees? get real dumb ass.
Did I miss something? I didn't think Andrews comment was offensive I thought he was being sarcastic, I appreciated him standing up for the Americans that Rose slammed.
Thanks Andrew.. we are NOT all heartless and uncaring.
is "us consumers" your word of the day?..........idiot!
Yours Truly,
Dumb ass
Then you fail to notice patterns of certain posters who just piggy back on to people's posts to just make snide comments, while not providing anything of value or relevance.
I also think that people are pretty out of touch if they don't see that our society is in the @!$%#ter and more and more people have stopped being simply.. human.
Not my fault you failt to notice things. You might catch on eventually, otherwise, I expect you'll be baited some day soon.
Your right! Thank you 'keep_it_cool, Andrew, and Celia.'
OVER.!!!
i work undercover (free) to find dogfights. i do have to see a lot of negatives but then something positive comes out when i save a kennel of dogs from being torn to death in the ring. and our community does a fantastic job adopting the dogs that are adoptable.
volunteer and stay off the computer, trolls.

Lenin said "religion is the opium of the masses" He got that right if wrong about everything else.
justwatching-2564468, John-2656066, Johnrw, and Rose123, you are all suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
patA
Man, this story is a real buzzkill....
and we have a winner! :D
Oh come on, people, that was funny. Lighten up! Spoiler alert... Everybody dies in the end.
Hopefully your 'end' is tomorrow.
rb, karma will get her.
I refuse to believe I will die until proven otherwise.
this story is just buzzing with anger
Very sad I hope they rest in peace.
Do you believe there is a chance they may have nightmares?
seriously? first you leave a post about Americans not being Americans, now this?? you're a fool
I'm allergic to bee stings so I am very careful around them. It is a very horrible way to die and my sympathy goes out to their son. God Bless them
Rusty, and all who are allergic to stings
This is the miracle cure....put wet tobaco on the sting...cover with duct tape..(won't fall off with moisture)......no reaction---- pain gone.....it sucks all the poison out!
I'm highly allergic also...i'ts the recipe of my friends granny from Tennesse...works no lie!
A paste made from baking soda and water is also pretty effective relief if used promptly.
JLM...this doesn't just cool it ...tobacco sucks out the poison...works better than the shots....immediate relief.......trust me.
The true fool is not necessarily the one that contradicts others.
He will be the one contradicting himself.
Oh My God, this couple could have been your parents or grand parents. Not one of the sorry jokes about illegal imigrant bees was the least bit funny. Not in pprint. Think it if you like, but not in print.
Oh, did I say that out loud?
Oh come on, it was clever.
There is a time and place for jokes but this ISN'T it. Please show respect.
I can't even imagine a more drawn out and painfull death except being burnt to death. RIP folks, at least you are still together.
Oh, do BEE such a stick in the mud! Just BEE glad it wasn't you! BEE fore you get mad at the rest of us, just remember one thing:
'Don't worry, BEE happy!'
@Tombones: are you half-wit or no-wit? You certainly are not funny.
msgted(ret), please mind # 1 of the Code of Honor in the future.
Sad thing, rest in peace.
What do you mean??Rest in peace? these poor people were stung to death! dumb ass.
@John-2656066: You are truly a cretin.
whyfo ies be mf cretin, ube calln me names modderf... Iez whit yo ass
I see that John has just discovered the internet. Time to sit behind your keyboard and insult random people, no doubt laughing hysterically as you do so.
John: Please learn to use only one punctuation mark at the end of sentences, and also, please learn how to not be hated by everyone you come across.
u be try to insult me white boy, u needs a ass whiping, I guine send my man down!!! MF iffing youse has a god, it/he/her cant sav youse ass....
Troll harder, bro.
Is Obama going to grant amnesty to the bees to gain their votes? They are illegal immigrants i think.
On a serious note, it's not as painful as you think. After a few stings your body starts pumping out adrenaline and serotonin and you just drift off into unconsciousness.
and we have a loser!
Hey Doug, don't bee hatin'!
Somehow I doubt that such a video is on Youtube.
Ya, it wasn't a bear, it was a Alien
I heard it was Star Jones. (not a bear)
@Brewzky23
NOT TRUE!! I was stung hundreds of times as a child and spent hours in agony while stingers were removed and I did not slip into unconsciousness!!! It would have been a HORRID way to die!!
cathy, they likely would have gone fairly quickly into shock, don't forget that you were a kid and they were in their 90s
Comment # 23 deleted. One word and no value.
Comment # 24 deleted. Immigration derail.
In Southern California I saw a basket ball sized mass of killer bees on a post of a chain-link fence next to a job-site trailer and the bees attached my car when I pulled up to it and EOD staff showed up with a flame thrower to torch these bees. These bees are no joke and will straight take you down.
Love the flame thrower. great idea
Glad I live up North...I hope New England is too cold for them!
"Glad I live up North...I hope New England is too cold for them!"
Maybe not the subspecies of honeybees, but look up Myrmica rubra. . .
usually they use a vacuum. I saw that done at my neighbors. They went on vacation to Europe for a month and come home to a house of bees. they called an exterminator and they brought in a vacuum. It worked!
I know a few beekeepers in Alaska... so don't bet on it.
ya i know a guy tried to get rid of a swarm of bees with fire >>>> burned his house down.
What a painful way to go. To the old couple... May you R.I.P. Here's hoping you had a good eventful life.
And to all you ignorant, unsympathetic trolls... May you die a thousand horrible deaths BEFORE you go to Hell!!!!
so, the son got into his truck and left his parents to be stung to death. nice son, saved his own skin, couldn't wait for his parents. must have knocked them aside in his rush to get to the truck and get away. wow, the wonder never ceases...
Miaw, you're a dip$hit! You read this @!$%#ty little article and you think you know evrything there is to know about the man and what he had to go through, and the (possibly)agonizing desicions he had to make. You are an idiot.
You know sometimes, you can't help them alone and you need assistance. But.. you could just totally freak out and say the kid was selfish.
You're supposed to run away and not help anyone else...if he had tried to help them he'd probably have been stung to death as well. Sometimes, there is only so much you can do.
miaw, you don't know what happened. so quit acting like you do. go home to your room in mama's basement. the library closes soon.
Your assumption is wrong. Please search for more detailed articles on this tragedy.
Well..thats the damn problem with gettin old..you just can't run like ya used to.
Well, Miaw, if you read the advice from experts near the end of the article, it says to "run away and don't stop to help others.", also known as the "George Costanza maneuver"
...I don't have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you!
I remember the joke.
Sad story. My sympathy to the family.
Β Such a sad way for a couple who have lived to their 90's.Just think as active they were they might have live many more years!
Douche bags. Two people died, and this is what they do. Make jokes. Douche Bags...
Hey colostomy bag, they died cleaning a hunting cabin out, they were hunters, nature fought back and won. They started the fight and lost.
Yes, this story is a buzzkill, but you don't have to bee hatin'.
Mark Ald, while I understand comment # 37 is not the best comment, please do not respond with a personal attack.
Mind # 1 of the Code of Honor.
I'd like to say that Marks comment is actually pretty funny, but also wonder why he got this warning, but scrooge didn't?
What a terrible incident!
A tour guide at Carnegie Mellon Museum of Natural History told me that these things could never possibly come over to the U.S.
Apparently she was wrong.
Was she a janitor? I mean, it seems like common sense...uh, they have wings...
yeah, and people didn't think fire ants would get out of Texas. they are in New Mexico and maybe even north of there now.
Deploy the Killer Bees along the bordertowns to fight the Drug Cartels...Makes sense, huh?
Nah there F'ing bee's they're unintelligent, and cant be controled. I think you might be thinking the United States Army! Idiot.
scrooge: holy smokes you are one stupid mofo.
nope you and your buddy are.
scrooge-49, mind # 1 of the Code of Honor in the future, please.
Scrooge, look up a word called "facetious". Maybe the phrase "tongue-in cheek" as well.
On the plus side they both made it well past 90. Not too bad.
