There is a simple solution to this matter. Make the contractor who hires all the workers on this site supply SS numbers of all of his workers onthe job site in order to make sure he is complying with all state and federal labor laws. This should be done daily.

Simple.....Matson should have contacted US ICE and asked them to check the County's Form I-9s for the workers. If the Form I-9s were not available or other evidence showed that the workers were illegal, then the COUNTY INDIVIDUAL(S) WHO HIRED THE WORKERS SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH A FEDERAL FELONY. End of story.

How does she know they are "non English-Speaking..." Did she give each one an English test? Just because they were speaking to each other in Spanish (presumably) does NOT mean they don't speak English. Newsflash! It was this mindset that got her into trouble!

Her concern was legitimate -- this was a big construction project and there was a very good chance that not all the workers were legal (some could have been from China, others from Vietnam -- both places which send many illegals). This could put her county at risk for some big fines.

Even expressing concern to the sheriff would be a logical response -- not all know what office to contact to report a specific crime. Law enforcement simply refers to the correct jurisdiction.

However, when she couched the report as she did, her legitimate concern got lost in her anti-Hispanic mindset.

Having said that -- I also view illegal immigration as one of the U.S.'s biggest problems. But mass deportation and building walls isn't going to stop it.

Anyone with a modicum of sense will realize that mass deportation is logistically impossible. Building a wall won't help much either.

What is needed is STRICT, VERY STRICT enforcement of employment laws with very heavy fines and jail time for the EMPLOYERS. Also, changing the rules so that illegal immigrants do not get ANY benefits -- NONE (with the exception of life or death emergency care and public health issue care). Doing this will make the climate in the U.S. such that they don't want to stay (or come in the first place) and they will return. Or most will. I would even go so far as to say the U.S. should offer free transportation to illegal immigrants who turn themselves in voluntarily.

There are many ways to come at this concern. As many Americans that are out of work here in this Great country, We have to ask our self's why are there so many people from other country's here working while our people set idle. Well the biggest reason is they work cheep. I think from my own experience that a great deal of us can not work in the sun and heat, we just can't take it. I was raised In MI and in the 1981 moved to TX for work. I found that I couldn't take that heat and had a heat stroke. Our Mexican friends, seem to be able to work in that heat. But having said that I am back in MI again and we see plenty Mexican workers doing construction here too. I guess if you can find workers that are American, you should hire them first as they live in your town and pay taxes in your town. But if you can not find enough American workers then you need to hire who ever you can get. The plain truth is we Americans have not trained construction workers. No one wants to spend the money and take the time to train carpenters and electricians or plumbers or masons ect. It cost a lot of money, and after you get them trained the way you want them, your competitor will come along and give them $ .25 an hr more and steel them after you put the time and effort in to train them. So we have a conundrum.

The sad truth Chuck is that I live here and I can't tell you how many people I know who are fully trained, in construction, and had good jobs up until the last two years. They are begging for work so they can feed their families but cannot find a job. And most of them live here to. And all but one of them are of non latino heritage. We have a great many skilled people, but I see it everyday where an employer hires Hispanic help over an equally qualified non Hispanic person, and I just do not understand how we can be so callous as to call cheap labor the right labor to use. I would like to see America go back to quality as being more important then saving a dollar.

I don't think she was wrong to question the citizenship of those workers especially in light of the nature of the contract. Documentation of any and all employees employed in this country should always be a matter that is automatically open as public information on any government job be it county, state or federal.

I don't see any problems about people having to show legal status only IF the proper authorities do that and everybody regardless of race. Only the USCIS should be asking for that since they are more knowledgeable about immigrations laws.

If you actually are a teacher then your comment serves as proof of how informed most American are about immigration. Not speaking English is not enough to suspect legal status. Not everybody that comes to the US Legally is pursuing citizenship, we allow tourists, asylum, students and business people to come here and they do not have know to speak English as a requirement. Also even by law, not every body that wants to become a citizen needs to know English.

There is an official language, whether stated in some law or book or not. If it is required to be officially stated, most, if not all countries would not have an official language.

The "official" language of any country would seem to stem from the origins of the government that is currently in place. Our government, our independence and our nation in general are based on the constitution of the United States, written in ENGLISH. All of the laws congress has passed, the oaths of office, all official documents, etc are in ENGLISH. That is our official language.

Only recently, because of some whiney, PC socialist attitudes have some standard documents been translated to other languages than english in this country.

Don't you............., open your wallet and look at your drivers license, your SS card, your insurance card, etc. Look at your bank statement, any other accounts you have, any insurance policies, etc. you have. Easy -- you simply require proof of citizenship from EVERY worker EVERY time they are hired; no matter what they look like or sound like. It's not a hard concept. You can even do "spot checks" as long as it's EVERY worker.

In my family to speak only English reveals a very narrow education. Just like having one grad degree is not good enough.

I was born here but I am getting embarrassed as this country becomes more and more like Nazi Germany - "I over-heard them speaking Spanish" - she makes it sound like a crime. Had it not been for that vote the language of the US would be German. All verbal communications were carried out in French and all written documents were filed in Arabic. Thank you mygirl1. Actually they have no intention of getting any money back. They used my number to get the job and claimed 7 dependents so no tax money was taken out of his pay check. At the end of the year since I am self employed it came up that I had been working in CA. I live in Colorado and have all my life. I turned in my 1099 and his company turned in a W-2 with my SS#. They added the 2 together and then they noticed something was wrong because I didn't file enough income. It changed my tax bracket and since I have no dependents and it looked like I was claiming 7 on an hourly wage. I had to prove who I was and where I had been for the last 3 years. His employer knew exactly who he was and when they confronted him he just left and went to another employer with my number and here we go again.

Illegal immigrants are a drag on our economy and our society and it is hitting border states disproportionately, sometimes our own fault (see my other entry). I'm afraid your type of naivety is what's causing the problems we're having.

You just don't understand the frustration here (by "here" I mean border states) Arizona's law was passed only due to federal inaction. Texas is now going to sue the federal government for not enforcing the border. The federal government is doing nothing and, frankly, does not care about the harm illegal immigration is causing. Again, see my posts about Bob Perry Homebuilders in Texas. Working people, however, do. INS? What a joke.

rrobeson, they aren't government workers. One of the reasons America became a great nation was that a large middle class emerged due to good wages and health benefits. illegals only bring America down to a third world level, and it is a serious terrorist threat to allow it to continue.

Once again you are assuming that they were illegal in a state where 1/4 of the population is Hispanic. If they were doing concrete or masonry you should note that there has always been a higher percentage of hispanic workers in those trades especially in the southwest. I know if you walked up to some of my hispanic friends and asked if they where legal they would stomp your ass.

Many people here are getting real tired of the all the white retires who have moved out here and the republicans who lined their pockets with cheap labor during the housing boom. If you don't like the Southwest and it's hispanic heritage then haul you rear back to where you came from we where better off with out you.

Umm, you honestly think these people are being paid minimum wage? They are illegal -- you don't have to. Neither do you need to pay health insurance or payroll taxes. It's not people not willing to work, it's greedy business owners not willing to pay liveable wages.

Do you know how much money it cost a business owner to hire a worker? About 25 - 40% above the hourly wage which goes to different state, federal and INSURANCE companies. YOu tell me, why they need so much freekin' money - just because somebody Hires a worker? When did it get to be a CORPORATE burden to FEED government and insurance industries? Who created this freekin' mess?
