The real story is being missed. This guy had a security badge from the company. He was trying to pull over a cop that was speeding and driving dangerously. Unfortunately the mistake was in trying to do the right thing: prevent another speeding cop related injury. Or is this just shotty reporting?
what in the hell are you talking about? he was impersonation a police officer.... I dont know what planet you are on, but there are "bad" people in this world that impersonates cops pulls people over and robs, kills, or rapes them....back in the late 90s early 2000s there was the blue light rapist, he played cop and pulled over women in rural areas of arkansas...
He was trying to pull over a cop that was speeding and driving dangerously.
Really? Thats what your going with? "He told the detective he wasn’t trying to pull the car over, but he told investigators later that he thought the car was going too fast" First of all, what device do sercurity cops have that can accurately determine speed?Secondly, No where in this article does it say that the real cop was speeding and driving dangerously. Or was that just shotty reading on your part? He lied about being a cop, what makes you think he's not lying about his explanation?
Unfortunately the mistake was in trying to do the right thing: prevent another speeding cop related injury.
Fortunately this guy made a mistake because he was doing the wrong thing: breaking the law.
sorry but the police force will accept people that no one else would. a guy at my work who got fired for falling asleep at his desk cause of taking so many prescription drugs(which were not prescribed to him) is now workng for the memphis police department. his dad being a former lieutenant for them might have had something to do with him getting on the force but how do you get past the fact that he had already been in rehab twice?
For what police get paid, I'm surprised that anyone with more than a fifth grade education will take the job. But then we don't want to pay taxes. We just want someone else to protect us at risk of their own lives.
Stupid is as stupid does. Hmmm, where have I heard that before, Forrest? Now he will probably lose his job over this incident. Ten minutes of indiscretion. At age 58, it will be hard to find another job that requires any level of responsibility.
when i was 22 my current girlfriend and i where talking to this 70+ year old woman. She was talking about how condemning of a society we live in. She told us a story of how she stole a cop car after he got out to go to the doughnut store and drove it a block a way and parked it. She said if you did it today it would be a one way ticket to jail and a huge fine back then you got your ass blistered.
Probably more than "ten minutes of indiscretion" - he's likely done this before. Fortunately it doesn't seem like he was trying to prey on lone women like has happened in other cases.
another unqualified wannabe, the country is full of people who want to be important, but don't want to spend the time and money to get the training to learn how to be important.
taxpaying american: You are right. People pretending they have educations, experiences, backgrounds, friendships and even kinships etc. Wonder what thats all about? Damn! Self esteem is built from within, but so is self degradation. Really a sad situation.
The big question is what was his motive for doing this, and has he done it before and gotten away with it. Power trip? Shakedown for money? Wanted to be a real cop and never made the grade?
Any police officer will tell you that one of the most dangerous situations is that faced during motor vehicle stops. I doubt that his training as a security guard included any motor vehicle stops. OK, so the guy was armed, what would he have done if he met with resistance?
These situations pop up every now and then where the wannabe actually plays their scam on a real cop. This guy at the least has some serious psychological issues.
I was a law enforcement officer for nearly 25 years and I never let my guard down when making a motor vehicle stop. You never knew what they occupants of a vehicle might have for weapons and the willingness to use them. This a$$clown is out doing this as a hobby?
A$$clown may have had an intent of robbery, perhaps even kidnapping. They should probably look into missing persons / murders in the area just in case.
There are several stories that make the news every year about men who pose as cops to pull over a woman. That the creep pulled over a real detective probably saved a woman from being raped or worse, killed. Men like that are dangerous and are on a power trip. They're not just playing cops and robbers and it's NOT just done for kicks.
I've taught my son AND daughters to NEVER pull over for a police officer until they're in a well-lit parking lot with lots of people around or gas station. It might get them an extra fine if the cop wanted to press the issue but it's a small price to pay for their safety.
You know, that dumb ass is probably reading this if he's made bail by now. So here's to you dummy! In your next profession you'll need to know this line so memorize it-- "Would you like frys with that sir?" Practice, you'll get it down!
What if it wasn't an undercover officer, but a lone woman this dirtbag tried to stop --- Did he have something else in mind when he used his police light to try to stop that car?? Perverts & molesters start sometime. THANK GOD IT WAS A LEGITAMATE OFFICER.
What if it wasn't an undercover officer, but a lone woman this dirtbag tried to stop --- Did he have something else in mind when he used his police light to try to stop that car?? Perverts & molesters start sometime. THANK GOD IT WAS A LEGITAMATE OFFICER.
these guys are scary. I once went to someones house who had a full blown cop car in his garage and police stuff everywhere in his house. he told me it was his hobby and that he was not a cop. I pretty much had the feeling the guy spent a lot of time naked in his cop car. freaks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, it's hard to gauge where on the spectrum of weirdness this guy resides; his impersonation could have been something of a hobby; he also might've been attempting to shake people down, or to take advantage of women. All the police kit ( gun, handcuffs, badge ) suggests that the wannabe notion might be the most likely.
As scary as the part time clown that lives a few houses down, it sends shivers down our spine. Creepy dude in person............disturbing people out there.
because the ones up north happen so much we ignore them. Ted Bundy sometimes posed as a cop. Where was he from?? where did most of his murders occur?? Up...NORTH
We had 1 in our town in S. GA he was a real bad 1 too. Raped a bunch of prostitutes, ripped off the drug dealers. They finally caught him, I think he had 30 something charges on him. He is still waiting for trial I believe.
Well nice that karma caught up with him! They should look further into this creeps background for sure, i doubt this is the first time he played "Cop". He is creepy and unstable.
They are everywhere, Peggy. I am from the area around NYC and these wannabe's are here also.
This story reminded me of a nasty 5 car pile-up on a local highway at 3:10am. Yup, right when the bars get out. The fellow that caused it all was the only one that wasn't hurt. And as he bobbed and weaved while standing in front of me, I could smell the alcohol from 3-4 feet away. He asked in kind of a low tone so no one else could hear: "...Hey.......I know a cop real well and he is my best friend. Will that help me?" As I stood there in full uniform, WITH my name tag on my right chest, this low-life proceeded to say MY name! I had all to do to keep a straight face as I asked him how he knew his friend and for how long? He actually tried answer that question, and then I asked him if he was blind also? I asked him to read my name tag. The look on his face was priceless. I wish I had a camera. Turned out he knew one of my brothers and he knew that I was on the job through him. I had never met this sc--bag. It sure gave me great pleasure to lock him up though.
I was driving home from work the other evening, and it was just dark and a car drove up behind me that had the appearance of a police car, lights and all. I slowed down but I did not stop. Lights going and he was right on my tail. I pulled to the far right lane but I did not stop. It was a dark part of a road and I don't stop on a dark road for anybody. So the guy pulls up beside me and it appears there are three guys in the car and they absolutely were NOT police officers. Another woman passed them alone and her car and they went after her. I hope she did not stop for them.
I have a carry permit and I carry my gun. I won't stop on a dark highway or anyplace in the day time that there are not people around. I don't care if the police have to follow me for miles, I am not going to stop until I think it is safe. It is not the police I worry about. It's the ones like the guy in this story, who are not police officers, that are up to no good.
And as to the comment from someone above, my event happened just outside Seattle, not in the south.
Why didn't you call the real police and report this guy's license plate before he could victimize someone else?
And by the way you are right about pulling over in a place that seems unsafe, it is perfectly legal to lead a (real) policeman who is pulling you over to a safe area, as long as you do so in a safe manner of course.
You should have called 9-1-1 and reported someone was trying to pull you over. They can check to see if it's legitimate and possibly keep these people from vicitmizing someone else.
Myopinion is right--you should only stop in a safe area. Lead the cop there in a safe manner.
yes, but did you stop? would you stop on a dark highway for anybody? cause you didn't seem to make that very clear in the multiple times you mentioned it.
I was going to ask if you called the police for your fellow citizen, but I see it has already been asked. And the answer is? Is it all about you or what?
I am going to tell you, as a police officer myself, that you did indeed do the right thing. However, much like the other commenters I would encourage you the call 911 should it ever happen again. Not only can the dispatchers verify whether or not an officer is indeed trying to stop you, they can also dispatch an officer to you if it is an imposter.
TDK: I have three grown daughters and tell them to do exactly what you did. But I also agree with TX: Call 911. What if they did pull over the other car you mentioned?
In her comment, TDK stated that the car attempting to stop her gave up the chase and pursued another car. If indeed the individual in the car was a police officer, he would not have given up to pursue another car. This, for me, would have sealed my opinion that he was not legitimate. And I without a doubt would have alerted the authorities. I have to say that I personally view the comment with suspicion. It just sounds a little too strange to me. For the sake of whoever the other woman that was pursued may or may not have been, I hope it is a fabrication.
While I agree with other posters that it would've been the right thing to do to call 911 while this was happening, I can completely understand being completely shaken and not thinking to get a tag number-- if it was even visible.
TDK, I too hope that the other car did not stop for them... and that she was able to get away...
He had a license plate on the car but it was dark and I could not see the numbers. That is why I did not report to 911. I knew the car looked like a police car but when he drove up beside me I could not tell exactly what kind of car it was. He then took off.
And no, it is not just about me. As a former ER nurse in a major trauma center I have had to deal with a lot of strange, nasty, dangerous people. And I have a very high sense of suspicion. I have jumped in to protect patients, visitors and others from assaults in my ED. I am not shy about standing up for what is right. But when you cannot see the license plate or give a clear ID of the car I am not sure what the police can do with the information. You have to understand that this is a long stretch of highway on interstate 5 heading north. It is extremely dark in that area and there are very few places to exit. In retrospect perhaps I should have just followed them to see what they were up to. I had my gun and a back up speed loader. As a 56 year old woman, with a gun, can I fight off three guys that are all at least twice my size? You tell me.
Wow...you must have read a more complete article than I did. I didn't see anything about the officer speeding in the very short article. What's your source?
SPEED TRAP My guess is that your one the idiots that like to talk sh** about police until you need one. The full article said this moron used the excuse that he thought the officer was going to fast, not likely that will hold up in court. I hope after he was arrested he took a little fall down the stairs on the way to his cell.
john, my guess is you're one of the people who actually think police help. they don't. they show up AFTER the crime has been committed and write a report. if it hadn't been a cop he pulled over that's what would have happened here too. cops commit just as many crimes through lying about what happened as they solve.
Funny how every time I read a story like this, the news tries REALLY hard to make it look like the guy was 'impersonating an officer' by what the guy had on and what his vehicle looked like.... i.e. he had antennas that 'resembled a police vehicles antennas. The P71 Crown Victoria comes standard from the factory with the words Police Interceptor on the trunk! That is 100% legal!!!! Look up the laws! As long as the guy DID NOT SAYhe was a law enforcement officer or has the actual word 'POLICE' or 'Agent' on him, he's in the good. The ONLY thing that IS illigal is that the guy turned on his 'strobe' light and 'tried to signal the under cover officer to pull over.' This would be the only explaining the guy has to do in court. Just wish the NEWS would get their @!$%# straight for once and stop trying to manipulate a story!!!!!!
News tried hard wha ? a wanna be cop ( security guard), flashes some strobe flasher thingy and pulls a car over. With a vehicle that resembles a cop car, and your suggesting they tried REALLY HARD to make this guy look guilty???....wow sounds like you have tried this little play cop thing or have put some thought into the legalese of it....he better get a good lawyer, and you should get rid of your paranoid attitude.
@Wack...what planet are you from mister? How about WHY he was trying to pull them over..?? What a citizens arrest? Its not surprising that so many women (and men) have aquired a carry license for their hand guns. As a wise man once said " I would rather be judged by 12 then carries by 6" ...
I read the whole article. Unmarked cars stop people all the time in this area. We don't have to stop until in a well lit and occupied area. That is the state law.
Somebody like this tried to stop my son when he was about 18. (20 years ago) and the perp pulled a gun on him.
My son knew it was a scam and who the perp was. My son drove straight to the sheriff's office, turned the guy in, and the guy was arrested. Turned out the perp was soon to go on duty for the locals. His act totally killed his law enforcement career. He is unemployable in any security position and last I heard was working at a cattle sale barn. I think he has also been denied a concealed carry permit. Our sheriff's office denies him when he applied, I was told.
Why would anyone want to masquerade as a cop anyway? Does he really think they are held in high regard. I'm 62, never been in trouble of any kind with the law and have been harassed by those bums several times. I certainly don't hold them in high regard and would never dream of acting like one of them.
@Lidvig...when somene one beats you up for the change in your pocket try not to call the cops "bums" while there trying to help you get some justice. You sir are the bum...
What an idiot!!!!
Heck, half of the cops I have seen are impersonating a cop.
The ego maniacs in government hate it when a worse ego maniac than them tries to steal the limelight.......
lol, I bet he's up for the STUPID of the YEAR award for this stunt.
did he pop his iodine pills?
He can put out an imaginary APB for some, and maybe for a jar of lube for where he's going. <lol>

Hey S-480283,
Where did you get your facts? Nowhere in the article was there any mention of speeding and driving dangerously.
Still not a cop.

The only comment I have is "D'oh"!!!!! (with apologies to Homer J. Simpson)
His apparent stupidity is probably what prevented him from becoming a genuine cop.
ya can`t be too stupid to be a cop,,or chicken$#*t
sorry but the police force will accept people that no one else would. a guy at my work who got fired for falling asleep at his desk cause of taking so many prescription drugs(which were not prescribed to him) is now workng for the memphis police department. his dad being a former lieutenant for them might have had something to do with him getting on the force but how do you get past the fact that he had already been in rehab twice?

Too funny!!!
DOH!!!!!!!
+1. My first thought too.
"Sir may I see some identification please?..... You're a COP?!?! D'oH!!"
Stupid is as stupid does. Hmmm, where have I heard that before, Forrest? Now he will probably lose his job over this incident. Ten minutes of indiscretion. At age 58, it will be hard to find another job that requires any level of responsibility.
if your 58 and losing your job as a security guard it probably isnt going to set back your life plans all that much.

taxpaying american,---------You have to be talking about left liberal's?Their always trying to impersonate somebody!
What a dumb comment!
Funny, I was thinking about Sarah Palin and Michele Bachman. Morons disguised as idiots.
The big question is what was his motive for doing this, and has he done it before and gotten away with it. Power trip? Shakedown for money? Wanted to be a real cop and never made the grade?

He wanted to play cop and now he gets to play prisoner...which one do you think he will like better?
maybe he will tell the other prisoners he is an undercover cop. that should go over well.
or a sadistic guard will refer to him as officer every time he talks to him.
dropping the soap part! and lets hope it happens many times since he could've been using this as a ruse to attack women.
rofl, ONI

That is the state law.
drinking that tigers blood no doubt.
Our sheriff's office denies him when he applied, I was told.
google blue light rapist
This guys name wasn't Barney was it? If so, why did he have more than one bullet?
Why would anyone want to masquerade as a cop anyway? Does he really think they are held in high regard. I'm 62, never been in trouble of any kind with the law and have been harassed by those bums several times. I certainly don't hold them in high regard and would never dream of acting like one of them.
@Lidvig...when somene one beats you up for the change in your pocket try not to call the cops "bums" while there trying to help you get some justice. You sir are the bum...
