One problem that has been found with castration is that the person doesn't necessarily lose his hatred and rage at children but rather may become more dangerous to them. While I agree that it would be a great idea, castration is NOT the same as a lobotomy. If you want to do the job right, the ideal solution would be to do both but that's way, way outside the ethical parameters in which medicine has to function.

What makes me really want to puke is the 70,000 number. That is just an astonishing number of sick individuals on one website. Being a parent of a 3 year old, I can't express what I would do to those people if I caught them with any child. I'd certainly go to jail, but as a hero.

I don't think castration is the way to go either as an unloaded gun can still be a weapon. Sticking them in jail also could be okay for them as the only thing that changes is the ages and I'd hate for the barely 18's in there to be their victims too. Instead, I'm a big fan of karma. They didn't care about the kids well being, so lets make them feel the same way. Drop them into open sewers, one year for every child they came into contact with.

How do these people get their hands on so many children? That is what disturbs me the most. Who is not protecting their children? My oldest brother's youngest son was raped for years by their Catholic priest who came to their house for dinner frequently, all sorts of things. Never in a million years would they have thought he was abusing their son.

I remember reading an article saying that pedophiles suffer from major depression because they are the monsters of society, they realize this, but there is no where to go for them to get help, because if they do, then the shrink turns them over to the police.

Okay--several things here, people. Not all of these individuals were looking at children--individuals over the age of 12 are adolescents. If we are going to start castrating everyone with an interest in adolescent-appearing images I think that a huge portion of the US male population is going to wind up castrated. While this particular group appears to have been mostly interested in boys, we have to remember that there are equally large groups of males primarily interested in adolescent girls.

One cannot be sure that the people on the site were doing anything more than expressing their interests. They may have done nothing more than talk--and, sorry, but talking about something doesn't make one a criminal. It doesn't even mean that they will act on their interests.

There are many "pedophiles" (the word is being misused here, as it only applies to those interested in children under the age of adolescents) who never act on their interests. If simply talking on a discussion board helps them to NOT act on their interests, then the discussion board is a good thing. For those who then left the discussion board and acted on their impulses--there are laws for this.

Further, the asinine comments here about how nothing "cures" a pedophile are informed mostly by the stupidity of those writing. People who are arrested, convicted, and imprisoned for sex crimes against children and adolescents very, very, very rarely reoffend by committing crimes against children. Check the Bureau of Justice Statistics--the rate has always been low. Most people who offend are those who give into an impulse--and having been really badly treated in prison, they don't want to go back there.

Most of the people on this board have no idea what they are talking about--most "child molestation" involves something like the perverted individual exposing himself, fondling the child, taking pictures of him/her in various states of undress (go look at pictures of Brooke Shields or those by Lewis Carroll) and so forth. While these are all extremely unpleasant and horrid, most of you are leaping to the worst of the things that people can do--none of which I plan to describe.

I sincerely hope that of those of you who are writing on this board, one of you has a relative who in a bad moment gives in to the urge to download an image of a child similar to those taken by Robert Mapplethorpe (which are considered "art") and winds up in jail. If anyone winds up shot or castrated or thrown into sewers for years--I hope it is this individual who had an urge that he gave into briefly and would never have acted on other than downloading an image. I hope it is your elderly father, beloved brother, or dear son.

It is not unknown for pedophiles who have never acted on their desires to have themselves chemically castrated or literally castrated or to isolate themselves in professions (like fishing or working on oil rigs) that keep them permanently away from children. And Bean brings up two good points. 1st, if the so-called "pedophile" is actually attracted to adolescents, he/she is not a true pedophile. I forget the term for this, but it is not pedophilia. 2nd, discretion is required in this case because it is likely that not all of these 70,000 actually acted on their pedophilic urges. Any prosecutor worth his/her salt should make sure to search for evidence of actual illegal acts (read: not just idle message board talk) before going to trial. Of course, those who are tried and convicted should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I tried my Google Fu a little bit this morning and didn't stumble back on it. At the time I found it I had actually started off looking up Malignant Personalities and then followed links to other disorders. This was a good while ago.

I do remember that it was written by a female psychologist, and was overall a criticism of current treatment techniques for pedophiles. Another thing she said was that the vast majority of research done on pedophiles had come from prisoners, and that made the sample group inherently flawed. The relationship with the doctor and the patient was flawed from the outset because the treatment procedures immediately classify the pedophile not as a patient, but as an offender, whether that person has offended or not, and that it warps the power structure.

The word that you are looking for is hebephilia which general means children aged 11 -14.

While overall sexual abusers have a low recidivism rate, predators have an high recidivism rate. True, that many who are classified as offenders are done so due to questionable definitions: 18 yr old boyfriend - 16 yr old girlfriend, public urination, etc., however those that are level 2 and level 3 offenders by and large go on to victimize over and over again.

Therapy has been shown to sometimes help with the urges, but it does not reverse them. Like AA, it depends upon how committed the offender is, the familial and community support that he has, and the severity of the offenses he is prone to commit.

The problem with "only" viewing these photos and not acting on them is that someone had to abuse a child to produce the pictures in the first place. By viewing them a market for the photos is generated and thrives. An example would be if there were no johns then there would be no prostitutes. This is market driven and extremely lucrative.

This is a very scary thought. Unless I am reading this incorrectly you are saying that as long as they have child pornography it may help to keep them from offending. That is absurd. Porn will eventually not be enough for them and it will escalate to more and more risky behavior until a child is harmed. My brother became addicted to adult porn to the point where it interfered with his life. Someone sent him a picture of a child and it escalated from there. The adult porn became to benign after a while and then so did the child porn. Then it was on-line conversations with 12 & 13 year olds, then it was pictures being exchanged, and finally meetings were arranged with children. This did not happen overnight - it was a 20 yr process. I never thought that it could happen to our family either - even with a history of abuse.

Sexual abuse is pervasive and it is alarming in it's statistics....an estimated 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys (I believe this to be very low) are abused before their 18th birthday. The average time that it takes a survivor to report the abuse for the first time is 17.6 years. The average survivors has 6 abusers and 90% of the time they know their abuser. The real crime is how much society is scared into believing that a stranger will abduct and rape their children when it is those around them that are more frightening. My mother was always afraid of strangers harming me; little did she know that I was being raped daily by older neighborhood boys and later by my own brother.

Your post, while not completely off-base, takes an extremely soft view of the problem. Yes, there are some who do not act on their impulses, but without support and therapy too many do. Your attitude is just as frightening as those that want their pound of flesh. I see no more sensibility in your views than I do in theirs.

That doesn't sound right. For that many victims and that many instances of abuse, it seems like about 1/4-1/6 of the population would have to be doing the abusing.

Please feel free to look up the stats for yourself. The average survivor was abused by an average of 6 different abusers....mostly family (sibling abuse is the most common ... 5 times more likely than by a parent.)

The typical offender abuses an average of 117 children and the majority of those children never report it (info gathered from the abusers). That's why the stats are so high. (US Dept of Justice stats)

I personally had 5 abusers that I remember and I have many memories which are too foggy for me to see who my abuser was. I know that the stats seem high, but they are verifiable if you so choose. My therapist (trained in sexual abuse therapy) and the hundreds of women in my support group will testify personally that it is more widespread than anyone wants to believe. Again, it's people that we know personally who are more like to abuse our children because of the trust and access. My stat at 90% is low compared to the US Justice Dept...they say 95% of cases are with someone known to the victim. About 65% - 70% of those are familial.

I'm very sorry for what you went through, and I'm not trying to be combative, but I deal with numbers all day long in exact amounts, so when something doesn't jive it pops a red flag quickly.

If the average abuser has 117 victims, and 65% of them are familial that means the abuser has molested 76 family members.

117 x .65 = 76.05

That's an extremely large extended family. I'd have to guess they are including children in found pornography that the abuser has. And that would technically count as a victim, but not a direct victim.

That number, 117, is from the US Department of Justice so it is based on actual cases and data gathered by them. Truthfully, the number is probably higher because obviously they do not know about every case. Take mine for example, I am not in anyone's stats as I never told. Most of my survivor friends never told either and they are not in anyone's stats. The majority of us has multiple abusers as well.

Numbers can be looked at many different ways as I'm sure you know, and I am not a stats person so I don't know if I can help you make sense of them as you would like. I will say that as far as I know I am the only family member that my brother sexually abused (again my family doesn't know about me so I may not know about someone else), but I know that he did abuse at least one other girl - someone he met online so I would call that a stranger incident. So with one abuser you have me - in the 65% - and the other girl - in the 5-10%.

You would have to check with the DOJ to find out how their figures are gathered. I can tell you though that the problem is enormous. I can also tell you that family is the most probable arena for abuse - and everyone thinks that it can't happen in theirs. I knew all of my abusers (that I can remember) so I fit into that 90% quite well. Again, I am in a support group that totals around 1,300 total members with about 300 active at any given time. There are very few who were abused by a stranger - very rare. Most of them had multiple abusers as well. Now I know that 300 is not a good comparison group, but I will say that we seem to reflect the numbers accurately.

You will also have crossover...one survivor who was abused by a father, uncle, brother, cousin, etc. that would probably count as individual abusers that prey on family in those stats. That, by the way, is also something that is very common....multiple family members abusing one or two children giving you four or five abusers and one or two victims. So it definitely is not a one to one ratio.

Oh, Dosh, please don't forget.....these numbers are estimates. Most kids don't tell....I didn't. I don't know if you will ever find the concrete answer that you are looking for because it will always be an unknown. If I had to guess....the numbers are low...too many kids just don't tell (for very understandable reasons). In the end, numbers don't mean much anyway. When you look into a survivors eyes and see the trauma and pain - the numbers seem to fade away.

I have been a little leery of DOJ numbers since I found out they were inflating the dollar amount of drugs they are seizing. They'll say they seized 300 million, but it turns out that only works with highly inflated street prices that may be from a time when it was trading high, or from an area with very low supply. They were cherry picking their numbers. I guess that's coloring my view on this.

Your apprehension about the numbers is understandable, but I will say that many other organizations (Rainn, isurvive, etc.) have similar figures. I, myself, am pretty leery of most stats because anyone with an agenda can manipulate them. With some minimal percentage variances I have seen fairly consistent numbers from multiple sources in those ranges, however.

Again, it is impossible to know the correct figures because of the secrecy that is caused by the shame that survivors suffer from. When we do tell we tend to minimize the abuse as well. We can really only guess based on the information that we have. It's hard to be analytical with such a fluid, emotional topic as well.

No, you're not. regretfully though legal systems are fraught with loopholes and cases have to be as airtight as possible to avoid miscarriages of justice on the basis of a technicality. In addition sometimes law enforcement needs to delay action to catch a wider swath of criminals than if they arrest the first few which they uncover.

I would love to see the perps' property confiscated and sold off to pay for therapy for the kids they mutilated. If it could be done with Madoff's assets, it can be done with theirs. Appoint a special monitor to make sure that the therapy is done by competent social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. Considering what's at stake, they needed to make a perfect case, one w/ no wiggle room to let someone escape by an itty-bitty pinch of a legal loophole. One escapes, more of them would re-double their efforts to find legalities to their favor. Even if they ultimately lose, they'd still've tied up a lot of legal resources, & the victims would be tangled up longer in having to provide testimonies, etc. Perfect case=perfect conviction=perfect ( & sure-er ) punishment in as little time as possible.

Ideally, yes, they would've dropped the hammer earlier, but they were going for the whole bunch & had to make a perfect case, convict them all, jail ( or whatever ) them, & let the victims get started as soon as possible working on returning to a normal life.

As far as punishment goes there is absolutely nothing that can compensate for a child losing their childhood and having to live the rest of their lives with the mental fatigue these crimes create. It is unfortunate that the criminal and tort judicial systems are separate for crimes like these. Or that there is not some way for the victims to heal or be afforded the opportunity to become whole and healthy again without having to have further contact through civil litigation with an alleged perpetrator.

I really regret that I have to take a cynical stance on this but I feel, after observing the outcome of previous cases, that although I have to give kudos to the police officials that conducted this operation they will suffer immense setbacks as they proceed to prosecution.

The legal systems in most western countries are far too lenient and in most cases oriented to protecting the rights of the defendents. The trials, if there are any, will drag on for years and in the case of wealthy defendents will no doubt end in aquittal. Throughout this the children that were the subject of this investigation will continue to suffer because of the lack of closure.

It really is too bad that because we are "civilized" to the point of self-destruction that we do not have summary judgement followed by immediate execution for the vicious perpetrators of these crimes against children.

I've seen some of the reporting on what goes on in places like Thailand and Cambodia, and I have to say that the people of those countries are partly to blame in this as well. There are parents in such poverty that they sell off their children into the sex trade. And I feel that if they're in that much poverty they can't afford to raise a child, they shouldn't be having children! Then there wouldn't be so many children being sold into slavery.

But we have the same problem here in the US, particularly among the illegals in the Southwest. (They're not undocumented, they're ILLEGAL!) And if they weren't coming into this country illegally and bringing their children with them, a lot of the abuse of children would stop. According to Department of Justice statistics for prisoners incarcerated for child abuse/molestation, the breakdown by race is; 88% Caucasian, 7% African American and only 5% Hispanic. Which means the child abuse/molesatation problem we are having here in the US is near completely due to European Americans (who are disproportionately represented in this heinous crime when compared to their population) and not due to illegals "coming into this country illegally and bringing their children with them".

Had they been reprimanded for entering the country illegally in the first place, these children in America could've been spared from that trauma.

However back to what I stated in my previous comment, even if these people are deported MExican children can still suffer from it. The age of consent there is 12 years old. If someone is raped in Mexico, the crime is seen as minor and will likely never be solved.

In case you didn't know, tapping someones wireless signal and using it for illegal activities is common. Who knows, maybe you'll get a knock on your door with some officer saying that they traced the user back to your network. What would you do? If your name was already in the papers you'd be done for in your community. Regardless of being able to prove your innocence you'd always have that stigma about you.

I'm totally against the names of suspects being released unless they're on the run. You can ruin an innocent persons reputation if you're not careful. For one, the report says "230 abused children, some as young as seven, have been taken to safety." Interestingly, it doesn't say these children were kidnapped. That leaves us to wonder, are they all related to the perps or are they the "child brides" we hear so much about; girls married off as children to men 4 times or more their age?

I think the countries involved give us clues too, the Netherlands, United States, Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and the U.K. have been having their problems with immigrants and their peculiar customs, which includes child marriages.

Suffice it to say a lack of information at this point leads to speculation. Hopefully follow up reports will properly fill in the blanks and not lead to more speculation.

Money, it brings higher standards, people have more time and resources to think and work in their dark sick side. Most of those caught are from the first world (Australia, US, Canada & Western Europe) often lawyers, bankers and even teachers, going to poor countries in Southeast Asia to hurt children. Corruption in those countries is also abundant and some parents even prostitute their kids.

Although there are people like these in poor countries too, it is harder to achieve this sophistication while trying to fill an empty stomach, they more likely would prey in neighborhood children and sometimes would meet street justice when caught.

A former victim myself (the Roman Catholic Church) I know what we need to do to stop these pedophiles. Besides putting them to death, life in prison without the possibility parole is the only alternative left that will curb these perps.

The majority if not all pedophiles are Sociopathic (when they were young they felt different and so the stress made them snap emotionally and they so became sociopathic) and so in their reasoning they believe that they have a right to molest.

As for the child victims, especially the ages of seven and under, their minds are damaged. Like me many of these victims are now inflicted with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). This disorder does exist I say boldly!....Then there is another mental disorder which will come about when these children begin recalling memories of what happened to them (victims become amnestic of their traumatic experiences due to DID) and this disorder is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and this disorder too exists!
