But I was hit with a fist once, totally unexpected, I responded with a beer bottle in the face. The person pressed charges and they were dropped. If you act stupid what you get in retaliation is your fault.

I agree with FlyOverMe; hitting back is not an automatic. There are several options available, including calling the cops. Lets face it, he's 5'7" and she is 4'11"; that doesn't automatically count for anything, but usually a guy has more upper body strength. He must have demonstrated that, because if one punch sent her into a life-threatening coma, that statement alone speaks volumes about the ferocity of the return punch. It was totally uncalled for, but he may still get off (unless she dies, then its manslaughter).

Okay, I know the article made a big deal out of a big guy hitting a smaller woman, so you all are hung up on that. Fact is, if the dispute had been between two men, and one of them ended up in a coma, same ending. If you hit someone hard enough to endanger their life, you started it, he/she started it, you both swung at the exact same moment, the one still standing is going to jail, and if the facts prove mutual fault, if/when the other regains consciousness, then they would be charged as well. Doesn't anyone remember a few years back an off-duty cop shooting someone over a parking spot argument. This goes on all the time in the City but when someone gets seriously hurt then it makes the news.

If you assault someone, they have every right to defend themselves. It's that simple. And as I've said several times above, I teach a boxing class on weekends; there are plenty of women at that gym who would be happy to demonstrate exactly how hard a 'girl' can hit.

My company will hire someone after 7 years from an assault charge, but never if they have DV. Why? Breach of trust. Yeah, it's a weird thing. That 25% is not 'a tiny amount.' It's enough that it's a real issue which shouldn't be ignored. This isn't some juvenile game of 'men are worse' or 'women are worse.' It's about making sure everyone has the right to be safe and secure.

Now all I know is that if i have a pissed off man coming at me,especially at night, (though I don't remember if they said the time here) I might take that as something I need to defend myself from(self defence). Parking in NYC is a crap shoot, and on more than one occasion I've seen parking spots being "saved" by individuals. Accosting someone would require getting out of your car and risking a bad scene.

Anyways, I'd never grab someone's wrist who was holding a knife. It's really easy for them to twist it around your hand and slash the tendons/muscles/arteries on the underside of your wrist. You don't want that happening, trust me. If someone is trying to stab me- I mean actually literally trying to murder me with a knife- they're attempting to end my life, and I'd take that seriously. Just because 'they're a girl' doesn't mean I'm not in danger. In that situation I'm going to go as far as necessary to remove the threat to my well-being. It's impossible to say what specific reaction is most effective without being there, but that's what matters: effectiveness, not adhering to some Victorian moral code.

Incidentally, knife defense is a crapshoot. You're going to get cut, the only question is where. The pretty karate demos online are not an accurate reflection of reality.

Its actually happened before, in my family. My sisters and I thought it would be funny to pull pranks on our husbands and compare stories, so when my sister came home from work early once, her husband was asleep on the couch and she thought it would be funny to grab a halloween mask and 'scream' and scare him off the sofa. He woke up and punched her right in the face. Like really fast, he said he wasn't thinking and when he opened his eyes he just saw the mask and swung out. He apologized though and felt bad about hitting her. We all just thought it was funny, but you really can hit someone on reflex!

I have been hit by by plenty of girls in my day (some deserved and some not) and I have never hit one back because for one two wrongs don't make a right and two unless she is a trained fighter or carrying a deadly weapon its pretty easy to shake it off and hold onto them or keep them at distance until police arrive to deal with the situation. Its hard cases like this guy that probably get punked out all day every day for having a big mouth and then go beat up on women, kids, and even babies because the need to feel strong. you stop in the road right next to the space with a pedestrian inside it and put on your 4-way flashers. they are for use in extenuating circumstances and a pedestrian standing in the street is definitely an extenuating (and unsafe) circumstance.

for as long as the pedestrian remains in the street, you are within your legal rights and will not get a ticket. you are free to block the spot yourself for as long as you wish, even until the cops come. at worst, if/when the cops do arrive the pedestrian will move out of the street and you can now park in your spot.

He said the man was backing into the spot ,and then noticed the woman standing there. 1) Never punch a woman if you are a man. No offence to the women but men are naturally stronger. If a woman strikes you, take the punch. It probably won't hurt that much.

BS. Like I've said above, if you came to my boxing gym some weekend there would be all kinds of ladies there who would love to mop the floor with you.

More importantly, though, is the fact that men on average being stronger doesn't mean and specific man is stronger than any specific woman. So lets change this rule to "Never punch someone who's weaker than you are," or even better, "Never punch someone unless you have to."

2) If someone does strike you first, make sure everyone sees that strike. Its usually the second punch that is seen by all. So if someone strikes you first, let them land a few shots. Witnesses are key. The winner of the fight usually ends up in jail if there are no witnesses.

I'd rather just finish the fight in a way which doesn't cause permanent harm. Shoulder throw onto the ground is pretty gentle and works for me at frat parties :)

I agree with MikeA. A punch is a punch, and even a punch from a woman or a child can hurt a heck of a lot. I understand that anyone who is punched is tempted to immediately punch back in response (not defense).

The difference is that, as a man, he can take the punch, take the pain, and walk away to fight again. The woman, OTOH, is much less able to take the punch (although women can handle pain). The shock of the punch broke her physically -- she may not be able to recover.
