I don't see the issue here to be honest. This was a planned event and no one was required to be present. It was a sex act between two people that love each other and agreed to performing such act in front of a consenting audience.
I agree that it seems unorthodox, but I don't really see what's wrong with it. Would you consider it 100% out of line if a class on sex and sexuality showed a short clip of pornography or a documentary detailing various sexual acts? I took a course in undergrad that had such. Doesn't seem THAT different aside from the obvious - videotaped vs live material.
It's stupid because they act like it's at all relevant. A guy put a dildo on the end of a saw and used it on his fiance. I mean, I'm not a prude, but that's just pointless in the classroom context.
@lonesomewolf - how is sex act not relevant to a human sexuality class? I was not in the class, and am not entirely aware of what was going on in the class and what was actually happening. So it just sounds like a very generalized statement you made.
Experience is the best teacher. Wasn't this a sex education course? Who would sign up for that and then rat a guy out for trying to SHOW them how it can be done?
Myself, I was taught at the ripe old age of 6 in a basement, by an older girl who lived in an apartment above ours. Today, I think they call that rape and sexual abuse, but I never complained about it... :o)
Bailey should be FIRED. In the same stream of "conciousness" as what he declares was appropriate even though it violates public decency laws regarding exposure, then those agreeing with him about it being "natural and human" should have no issues with people dropping their pants and taking a shlt whenever they get that "natural" urge or mind people copulating publically at the beachs or parks.
What Bailey did would get him the death penalty in 1/2 the world. Here, he violates common decency laws and spits upon society and commom courtesy.
The woman who got off on the dildo DIDNT NEED TO STRIP COMPLETELY to have a stick shoved up her vagina and electronically vibrated within her. With that dildo up inside her, there was no need for any tits and ass expose. This is just 2 sociopathic media pigs looking for attention in a most anti-social way ... anyone who supports that kind of behavior is just as sick and guilty as the 2 active participants.
That teacher spits on the very society he claims to attempt to educate. HE SHOULD BE FIRED ... and stipped of any and all teaching credentials. He is a pig unlearned in true human sexuality which has always demanded intimacy and privacy between the participants ... long before man invented religion to control and manipulate access to it.
I don't see why he should apologize. It was voluntary, no one was forced against their will to watch. Makes sense in the context of the class. What better way to see how humans react to sexual stimuli than to see it happening in action? I wish my human sexuality class had live performers, it would have been a godsend compared to the cheesy outdated 70s porn (which teaches nothing on how humans ACTUALLY behave in a sexual context) my class watched. I could see that this would be an issue if he had just sprung it on an unsuspecting class full of students or minors or something, but they were consenting adults who knew what to expect.
Given that this occurred at a private university in an after class event, was entirely voluntary to attend, and from what I understand of it here, had no detrimental effect on students who chose not to attend, I don't see the problem with it. It is a bit strange, a bit unorthodox, and a bit perverted. If the University's administration had no problem with it, then it really shouldn't matter.
However, if this has occurred at a public university I would see this demonstration as having been a big problem for basically the reasons Recycled Hope mentioned. That sort of demonstration doesn't belong at a publicly funded state university.
If you really need a demonstration on how sexual stimulation works, there's a big chance that you shouldn't even be in college.
The problem is that this is a bunch of bull@!$%#. It's like asking me to draw my last girlfriend's private part for the teacher. What the teacher is going to get is a punch in the face from me. If anyone wants to avoid this question, then let's ask... why are you making the boyfriend of that girlfriend a pervert? Was this a question of loyalty? Why shall my eyes ever look at any other girl who I am not married to or will mary? Shall this be recorded in my legal college transcript and used as evidence in any court case related to sexuality?
OK, it seems most everyone here is OK with this. Just more of what George Orwell predicted. Doesn't anyone think this is more than a little kinky/weird? I mean what is the point? Educational? LOL!
Guess most think it is entirely appropriate. Hell, why not let's just OK it on the Bus or in the bleachers at High School football games. I mean, every experience is another "Teaching Moment" isn't it?
And we all know how far behind US Students are falling behind the rest of the World. What an opportunity to close the gap!
Hope, stripping in a park I have no problem seeing either. @!$%#ting, on the other hand, is littering. He would get the death penalty in many places. But this is America. The woman didn't strip completely, she only took off her bottom. And really, this is a course on human sexuality, and you're shocked that some students were allowed to see real-world examples? We're just lucky that my ROTC classes never applied real-world examples of what we learned every day... At least in this case it's two people making love instead of violence.
And Amadoc, what the hell did any of that have to do with the article?
U of M Fan...... I think MOST people here realize that this was a bit too much over the norm, but we tend to poke fun at it.
This is really a ridiculous thing to write about to begin with. It's one of those articles where you find all kinds of openings in posts made by people who take this article serious.
I don't see the issue either. If your offended you don't have to attend. But you don't have the right to prevent others from attending.
It's like porn. If you don't like it don't pay for or watch it. I do agree that people who sell porn should not have stores or sell it in neighborhoods or close to schools. Being reasonable is the way to go.
I think the prof sees these students as adults, and parents and many others see these students as easily influenced "children". The class is silly to begin with and so the fact that there are no barriers should not surprise anybody.
The prof is right that most students are of age to do many legal things. However, having worked around college students for several years right off campus, I can assure all of you these students are KIDS. Their thinking process is really, really scary. These "adults" do dumb stuff all the time like walking home from a party, drunk, all alone, and then wonder why something awful happens to them. Even in the dead of winter, with temps around -30, the girls today are barely dressed. They go home with anybody. They believe anybody. They change partners like almost every week. They are children with not a lot of street smarts today, and sadly many have negative life experiences while a student that will forever mold who they are.
The prof knew very well the reaction he would get, but it was worth it to him knowing he would not get in much trouble. Nothing happens to teachers today that break moral code. How many profs do you think have more than a student/teacher relationship? BTW, the "kids" today do not keep secrets well. They will tell it all to a stranger. So if profs think nobody knows what is really going on, it just isn't so. It is just that nobody does anything about the line being crossed because again are these kids or adults?
The point (as explained to me by a psychiatrist whom also explained to me he was exposed various sexual content at a university in Florida during the 60s/70s), is to desensitize students to human sexuality.
Some of you go "OMG! How gross!" and yet fail to realize that you feel that way because you were raised to since childhood to covet sex as some act of the devil and should only be done when married, between a man and a woman, and blah blah blah. Most of you who think that way do so because magical beings you can't see tell it's bad. Because a guy in Rome with a huge hat tells you how to live your life. OK with letting a foreigner tell you how to live your life, but not only when your own country government wants to do something like... Give you healthcare. Hypocrites.
They are consenting adults who are able to freely demonstrate as they please in a controlled environment. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong. I don't agree with people protesting at funerals, but obviously they have some freedom of speech protection that allows them to harass the dead. Last I noted, there's a huge porn industry of consenting adults that do this kind of thing for money and entertainment. Sanity forbid they do it for something perhaps educational or for reasons such as desensitization.
As from the original article "It was part of a psychology class on human sexuality, designed to explore — in a research-based academic setting — all facets of the topic."
Simple fact then is, if you can't handle the heat, get out of the fire. Go live in a bubble, and don't turn your TV on. You might see a Cialis commercial.
Zapix...... I agree with what you are saying. I posted another remark on page 4 of this that gives an example of what you are talking about.
page 4
The craziest thing I ever did in public was in 1974. I was picked up in a night club by this wealthy, I guess what would be considered a "cougar?" today. She was from Texas and her and her husband took "separate" vacations.
We went to my apartment where I thought things would be taking place. But she insisted on going out and climbing under the gate (It was locked after dark.) on the tennis court and doing it right there. I thought for sure my butt was going to jail that night. She was a multiple and a screamer to top it off. I know for sure that at least one couple saw what we were doing, but for some reason never called the police. When I asked her why public sex excited her so much (While it made it difficult for me to say the least.) She said she came from a straight laced family and sex was never allowed to be even discussed. I always figured that she must have been so repressed growing up, that she became a glutton when she got older and it made her go overboard.
How can you not understand this. Anything pleasurable is clearly the work of the devil. God would never wish anything good upon his people. I mean really, take a history class if you don't believe me.
Like so many events in our society, it ONLY takes [1] one negative response to shut down the entire event.......and I suspect that's exactly what happened.
A few [ perhaps, a verrrry few] individuals got their morals upset, and...although, like the rest of the group who signed on for this after-class event, they, after the fact, decided that it was a bit more than they had expected. Most folks, in that situation, would have just decided that it was not their cup of tea, and forgotten about it. Unfortunately, this individual/these individuals decided that it was up to them to be the moral beacon for the entire group. So they decided to "make their point", higher up the food chain....and as a result, the instructor had to apologize. For me, it was allot to do about nothing, but there's always someone that wants to have their "15 seconds of fame". UGH!!!
John here's the problem, usually live on stage preformances are set up by Union workers.........The Unions didn't get there cut of the action, first.....No one trained nor supervised the young man, as to how to safely use power tools inside a young lady, ie; what were and were not safe settings for the power tools. How much lubricant should be applied and ect....
In addition to that the young lady was not furnished any PPE to protect her from any potential danger from electric shock, or injury's from mis-applied power tools, burns that could be suffered from the lack of lubricant. Nor was she furnished any PPE to protect her from man splat.
Welcome to the Liberal Academia Left Wing. Perversion is all they really know. And these perverts are running the Democrat Party. I can not see how helping to turn the younger generation to become sexual degenerates is going to help them in the future. I guess the NAACP is going to demand that child molesters are normal and that we don't have the right to incarcerate them for raping children. Pretty soon, Academia will be as sick and disgusting as FRANCE.
@Zapix, you are ABSOLUTELY right. People need to get the hell over their stupid, idiotic, and moronic hang ups.
This class was optional. Nobody was forced to attend and watch. He shouldn't have to apologize just because so many people around him are uptight prudes. I don't think he should have apologized. I wouldn't have.
mgo...irrelevant. I am a liberal, and I would not be comfortable in this situation as a teacher or a student. This went beyond the live models for an art class...perhaps a video to view in private would have been more effective...
why do so many make everythin a political viewpoint???? N/A
I am way more frightened of people like Hope who post their really "ghaddafi" style craziness. The people, like myself, who are not bothered by it seem less volatile. Maybe because their is not so much repressed energy?
If this had been a public academic institution, then I would basically agree with Recycled Hope's point of view. Public academic facilities should not be used for things such as this.
However, this was a private institution. If those in charge of the college knew of the plan before hand and didn't have a problem with it, then no one should have a problem with it. It was voluntary to attend, and extra curricular.
kkarhu, we learn it from the liberals("why does so many make everthin a political viewpoint????N/A), why are you condeming us from doing exactly the same thing as your group. By the way, your spelling could use some work(everythin), I would expect better from a teacher.
It is just seeing live masturbation. What is wrong with that? I'm pretty sure she got wet, any girls there got wet, and the guys got hard ons, and they might have learned something, so who cares? It was after-school, completely volutentary, private, with consenting adults. They can drink, drive, and vote they don't need mummy or daddy to make these kinds of decisions.
I think something like this violates pubic exposure laws and the Professor and the participants (including the "spectators") should be arrested and fine+community service just like if any regular person if caught in public by the police would have to face.
I think the issue was that it wasn't obvious how the video was supposed to help the class. I doubt the video couple were giving a lecture while giving their demonstration. They were just simply having sex. Who knows-the instructor may have just downloaded it off of a porn site and the vid was never intended to be educational. There's a difference between porn and a clinical video. Sort of like the difference between a real trip to the emergency room and an episode of House M.D. One teaches and the other is just entertainment.
Some of the students may have felt like they weren't learning anything and they were just watching porn with their classmates. Oddly enough some of us don't like attending public showings of porn. We prefer to keep that private. Going to a real class is something different. Like a math teacher pointed out to me several years ago we go to school to learn. We're not meant to enjoy it. lol
mgo, while you're ranting about the "perverted liberals" I'm going to vent about the "perverted conservatives" where I live who have proposed to pass a law sentencing a woman to death if she has a MISCARRIAGE and can't PROVE that there was "no human involvement." Now THAT is perverted.
What next, will the criminology professor ask for volunteers to demonstrate different ways to murder someone in class? No wonder other countries are surpassing us in math, science, business etc.
CAS..., where do you live, because I am not aware of any state in the US that has a law like that (Barbaric for sure). A law like that would not be perverted, it would instead be fascist and Unconsitutional as in the US you are innocent until proven guilty.
I once took a women's studies class, at a private university. The professor let us know one day that she was going to show a film that was relevant to the class, but warned us that the film featured a lesbian sex scene, and told us that anyone who was uncomfortable, was free to leave the class. Although the class was primarily female, there were four men in the class as well.
When the scene in question began, I was uncomfortable, and chose to take my leave. I was the only student to do so, so I suppose one would think that the other students were fine with the scene? As it turns out, that was not the case. The next day I spoke to a few of my fellow students that told me they wished they had had the never to simply get up and walk out as I did, but they didn't want to look bad to their fellow students. I was older than most of the other students, and therefore was not susceptible to the same peer pressure they were.
In reading this story, what struck me was that although the female was naked, it didn't say whether or not the male fiance was. It also didn't say the make up of the class, as to how many males and females might have been present, and it didn't say anything about any comments that might have been made by the students during the demonstration as it were. I personally would have objected to the demonstration, as I am not sure why it is necessary to show how a sex toy us used on a live model. Why the students imagination wasn't enough is beyond me.
For those of you that would have been completely comfortable watching this sort of demonstration, good for you. However, I can understand how someone might believe they could handle this in theory, then find themselves uncomfortable once they were seeing such a demonstration performed in front of their eyes. It seem ludicrous that anyone would think this sort of thing was O.K., but then again we have come a long way from believing that nearly anything is off limits in American society, and that is really too bad.
mgo-1426388, I cannot help but find it amusing that you criticize others' spelling when you yourself spelled "condemning" without the N in the very same post. I wish I could say that I expected more from you, but, considering your other bipolar rants about "perverted liberals" and "disgusting France" and "child-molester-protecting NAACP", I cannot. And in response to your comment about how everyone involved should be arrested just as they would be in "any other public place", the event was not in a public place, as made clear multiple times in both the story and the discussion.
And by the way mgo, France is awesome, and, as a country, they have their sexual priorities way more in line than we do. Maybe you should do some traveling, or at least research, the next time you decide to accuse an entire nationality of being sick.
And kkarhu, I'm pretty sure if a private, at-home viewing of a video of a girl masturbating had been assigned, the experience for the students would have been substantially less academic, if you know what I mean.
CAS - my sympathies on having that idiot Franklin in GA. (I thought it was SC pulling that, but close and hardly different.)
theboys said, and SO true..."I can assure all of you these students are KIDS. ".
A lot of bad stuff never hits the news....and what does, is so very sad. The NW prof was over the line, and I'd suspect getting his jollies until he got called on the Dean's carpet. If I was paying THAT tuition bill - googled it at a whopping 56 THOUSAND dollars all in, I'd be turning the heat on their President, and surely plenty of parents were.
CAS.., happy I do not live in your state, however Georgia has always been kind of fascist with exceedingly high State Taxes for a place that is controlled by Republicans. This law will be found un-constitutional, though your citizens will have to take to Federal Court. I am personally against abortion, but cannot in good concision believe a rape victim would have to carry a child from her attacker and I am wholly against anything that helps men who beat or rape their wives. Superserg, In France they are very easy on child molesters and they allow child porn, but, I guess that is what attracts you to France. I certainly hope you don't live in my neighborhood.
It has not been passed, just presented a HB 1. Franklin needs to be tarred, feathered and ridden out of the state on a rail. I really should look up which MORON proposed this same measure last year in Utah.
I'm not into porn - it BORES me as it has no plot. As for how "awesome" France is - my nephew worked for an overseas company and vacationed there. He said "The people are rude and they stink to high heaven. I won't go back."
Cassandra, college students do not have the market cornered on doing stupid things. Older adults do stupid things (like driving drunk, yapping on cell phones in traffic, texting while driving, you name it, it's out there) too. Maybe FEWER older adults do them, but that is because they did them when they were younger (about 18 - 25) and they learned that it was stupid. Some NEVER learn. Not sure where this quote comes from, bu it's a gem "Every generation has to find out for itself tht the stove is HOT."
Cas...,I been there as well (France) and agree. Italy, Spain are also the same. England was OK. The only countries ther I visited that seemed welcoming were Germany, Austria, Ireland and Denmark (Denmark has truely exceptional coffee).
MGO, I'm sorry you didn't have a good time in France when you "been" there. You say the people were rude, but I think that might have been a self-fulfilling prophecy on your part, as a result of your judgmental, culturally close-minded attitude. Another result of this attitude is, once again, your lack of research in your baseless claims that France is easy on sex offenders, and allows child porn. The former being an easily disputable opinion, and the latter a complete falsehood. According to the Library of Congress data-base, a pretty reliable source (understatement, incase you didn't catch that), France doesn't even allow drawings depicting underage ludeness, unlike our own country, which does for political or artistic purposes. Oh, and I see you have added Italy and Spain to your list of reprehensible countries, but why stop judging there? I have the utmost faith in your ability, and willingness, to alienate at least an entire continent.
Also CAS-Reaves, NOT PORN!!!! Now that I have your attention, it's good to know that you have any authority at all on the subject of France, considering your wealth of personal knowledge and first hand experience. Thanks for contributing your cartoon stereotypes that I'm sure apply to the entire country.
Well, Noelle, considering an earlier article stated that the class topic for that day was sexual fetishes, voyeurism and exhibitionism among them. The couple playing with the toy were exhibitionists, any of the students who got a charge out of the show were voyeurs, and the ideas and inward causes were what was discussed in and after the classes.
Reaves, And since you were able to very clearly describe those definitions in one sentence, I don't know why the prof had to have a live demonstration. Sex isn't rocket science.
Funny, really. Did they really think it was going to be ok with everybody? Sounds like a good excuse to watch some live porn. Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Toasty........ You'll catch hell now! Don't you know that anything that has the word S-E-X in it attracts religious whackohs like sh*t does to flies?
You're too open minded for these blogs. To have a voice here, you have to do your private things in a dark closet and ridicule anyone who wears a dress above the knees.
What is your definition of "disgusting" ? Human anatomy is disgusting ? Is the insertion of a catheter disgusting ? Clearly it is a routine part of medical instruction and clearly the same parts of body are involved. Perhaps whole medicine should be banned as "disgusting" ?
BooHoo-1351197 you're an idiot. Did you even read the article? They were told beforehand what was going to be presented, it was held as an after-class extra, nobody was required to go, and no credit was given. It was there solely for the purpose of seeing sexual expression between two consenting adults for students of a human sexuality class. You are a complete and utter tool.
Actually BooHoo-1351197, she didn't pleasure herself...her fiance did it for her! You are part of the problem in this country-the morality police. There is no reason to fear our bodies or our sexuality. Do us all a favor and go back into your closet.
There you go again, mgo. I believe sexuality is normal and lovely....but private. 'I am very liberal politically and open-minded, but the lack of privacy or the reduction of sexuality to merely an "act" is disconcerting to me when we are examining a complex human response. Let go of your politics on this. It is irrelevant.
The event was private. And I don't want your morals forced upon me, and the religious right loves to do that, so stop getting your knickers in a not, and except that moral values of the early post Civil War-era are old. Culture changes, and anything that is opposed to change will not last for long.
Not to say I want people having sex right in front of me all the time, but we should at least be comportable with our bodies and how we reproduce and get horny. Remeber it is all natural!
What I find disgusting is how the conservative Republican Georgia State Senator Bobby Franklin has proposed to pass a law subjecting a woman to the death penalty (you read right - DEATH PENALTY) if she has a MISCARRIAGE and can't prove that there was "no human involvement." Now THAT is disgusting!
In Michigan.., I know you don't want any morals forced on you as you do not have any. I am sorry but, I am not a Bible thump-er(I don't even go to church), I just don't believe in teaching young people that anything goes as it ends public decency. It has surely hurt the college's image and I would not pay for my daughter to go to that university for sure. My family is multi-cultural and multi-racial, perversion is not culture. It is instead degradation of civility and always the sign of civil collapse. The anything goes approach was one of the down falls of Roman, Eygptian, Persian and many more empires though-out History. If you had a classical education, you would know that.
No, perversion is NOT culture, but it IS a major part of human sexuality and any student who wants a career in the psychology, sociology or psychiatry (and even medical) professions MUST have a thorough understanding of the subject.
And I resent the remark about having morals forced upon me - I have morals. I just don't think that, in the context it was presented, that what happened was a big deal. It wasn't a smart move, but it sure gave the students a prime example of the sexual fetish "exhibitionism" and probably a few prime examples of "voyeurism."
Little Boy (excitedly): "But Daddee, couldn't you have your BALLS cut off?"
Dad (sadly): "Oh no! God would look through a cheap trick like that! You see - what we do to ourselves... we do to 'im!"
Oh Monty Python! How angelic the children were singing with sweet voices: "EV-ery SPERM is SA-cred!"
yeah people who don't want to cheapen sex into a spectators sport are such prudes i bet they even have meaningful sexual relationships...what idiots..when everyone knows sexuality is all about @!$%#ing
so you can prove that none of these people are capable of meaningful relationships? like the 50% of divorced people in the country, all the more that cheat, ahhhhhhhh illusions are wonderful. This has no bearing on your relationship capabilities.
I had a sex ed class at a community college and our professor was going to a sex shop after class and invited us along for a "field trip" except it was a night class and I knew it would just end up being me and this 65 year old sex professor standing in an aisle of a seedy porn shop at 9pm...and I declined said invitation.
Why? Did he tie anyone to a chair and force them to watch? When I was in grad school, many years ago, we had nude encounter groups in the hot springs just off the highway between Santa Fe and Cuba, N.M. No one had to go, no one had to be naked, but it was instructive and most of the psychology students did participate and more than half were nude. I admit, no one had public sex.......
Exactly what should he be fired for? He broke no laws. People appear to think that a professor should be fired merely because they themselves are prudish with their sexuality. News flash: not everybody has hang-ups about sex.
Even tho this was "academia" (albeit after hours), last week I would have questioned this prof's judgement. But this week, after the supreme court ruled that those nut-jobs who protest at military funerals have a right to present their words and visuals (signs), I must admit I'd find the prof's presentation much more pleasant to watch.
Amen!!!! The hate filled protests attacking families who have lost a loved one are beyond comprehension. But we are told that it is a right. Watching a committed couple making love is wrong. Beam me up Scotty.
Luckily for the funeral goers, a group of retired soldiers naming themselves the "Patriot Guard" has arisen. They go, in large numbers, to the funerals of soldiers where fanatic Phelps rears his UnChristian head, and interpose their bodies, in uniform, between the families of the fallen and the protesters, so that the families do not have to see the fools with the signs.
Too bad someone hasn't yet come up with the idea of a drive-by against the protesters using water balloons filled with skunk musk and coyote urine.
Fire him asap, this was not porn class. It may have been after classes but it was held on school property and students were invited to attend. Fire him, Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him,Fire him, NOW.
Don't sugar-coat it. Tell us how you really feel. :-)
I do think he was stupid and the demo was tasteless. If I were a parent of one of those kids I would be annoyed that my tuition money supported that but, that said, it was a sexuality class, the demo was voluntary and all the observers were presumably over 18.
He can probably hide behind acedemic freedom but if the school has a "good judgement" clause in his contract they should consider using it IMHO.
As I said in the other post I made, you're a clueless twit. I hate people like you, nothing but an anal retentive prude who pushes their morals on everyone else. If you don't like something and you're not forced into participation, then go somewhere else. You weren't even there yet you think you have some kind of moral obligation to see a guy fired over something that you have nothing to do with.
People still live in the dark ages. If the sight of real sexual behaviour disturbs you then YOU are disturbed. The proff was absolutely right in an institution of higher learning. These 'kids" aren't kids at all. Grow up
Seriously, half the people here are shocked and outraged at the sight of two people making love, but have absolutely no problem letting their children watch TV shows and movies about people killing each other.
Couldn't agree more. Nudity is more shocking than graphic depictions of murder as entertainment in this society. People that get their panties in a twist over this have absolutely no sense of what should really be upsetting. What harm was done in this case? NONE. A woman was being stimulated sexually. OH NO. QUICK, repress them!! And while you're at it, queue up Texas Chainsaw Massacre so we can watch some wholesome entertainment.
How is learing about how you, your parents, your grandparents, and so forth, find your way to where your are now bad?! I mean you had to get here one way or another and he was just telling them (in great detail) how it was so. Also he just told them WHAT THE H*LL PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING ALL THESE YEARS!!!! Ex. "Like Rome discovered these hundreds of positions and as they took over most of the world, new positions have been discovered along the way..."
That would be completley awe inspiring to learn about.
And I thouroughly ha- dislike (hate is a strong word) that your body and how you feel when you are happy and satisfied is considered horrible, appaling, unholy, shameful, offensive (you can go on and on) in this society when not just 250 yrs ago it was common. People who think that way bring about twisted and psychoic children to adults.
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
And we wonder why college graduates are mindless idiots when they graduate? For all of you who think this is ok just remember....these are the mindless idiots who we need to keep our Social Security system afloat by holding productive jobs. Will be harder to do if all they know is how to do is operate a dildo.
He should be fired and the whole education system should be reviewed. There is zero need for any class related to sex on any school campus. Everything you need to know is instinctive and anything beyond that is negotiable between the couple. And bottom line...sex is a private matter. The two who exhibited should be arrested for public exposure. Ever wonder why college tuition is so high? Because 3/4 of you money is spent on BS classes like this.
And after you fire the prof...take a good look at the board who approved him and his plan of study. No worries for their future....I'm sure the ACLU will hire them all.
cynsterwytche....... I disagree. I think it would IMPROVE work ethics, productivity and the desire to show up for work, if you knew you were going to be banging one of your fellow employees on your lunch break. At least it worked for my ex-wife. She NEVER missed a day of work!
Another sexually repressed moron expressing their moral objection about something that doesn't harm ANYONE. Also it was NOT held in public, you idiot. It was behind closed doors. And retards like you are the reason why teen pregnancy is so high, and ignorant young people catch STDs. You'd rather not educate anyone about sex and instead have them make devastating life altering mistakes. Man people like you piss me off so much.
Who cares!! Its a human sexuality class and no-one was forced to watch.. I remember taking plenty of classes in college (like Algebra) that in no way helped prepare me in the working world nor do I ever use the information.
Americans are prudes!! Let's go back a 100 years to when sex was only for procreation! Get a grip!
"There is zero need for any class related to sex on any school campus."
This is not "school." This is university. Zero need? I'm sure the people training to be physicians, social workers, biologists and psychologists have NO need to understand human sexuality [rolls eyes]. So everyone should remain ignorant about sex merely because YOU are a prude?
When I was in college, pursuing a Psych/Soc Degree, I'm not sure I can even remember all the *Human Sexuality* classes I had. Human Sexuality, Sexual Deviance, Sexual Dysfunction, Marriage and Family, Erotic/Sexual History, Understanding Sex, Social Function of Sexuality, I'm sure several more. Although some of the visuals/reading/films, etc were a little strange to me, they were all part of a Traditional Psych. Study course for a Family Counselor. He may have gone a bit far with a live demonstration of sex toys, but at the same time...................people really DO do these things. If you personally disagree, don't be a Psychologist/Sociologist/Psychiatrist, OK?? You DO have to know what you are talking about with your patients!
Jen. Sex was only for procreation in 1911? I doubt that. I doubt that it was only for procreation in 1511. The only reason this kind of thing didn't happen back then is because they didn't have power tools. On another note: This class is useless. Sex is an extracurricular activity. It requires "on the job training." And if you disagree, Go $%$%#! yourselves!
Based upon what criteria do you determine the students in attendance are morons? They are morons because they attended a live sex act because and only morons attend live sex acts? Can we say "circular reasoning"? It was a human sexuality class, attendance was voluntary, no one was forced to be there. As long as all parties are consenting adults, what difference does it make? Why do people like you feel they need to worry about other people's sex lives?
The operation of a dildo is not what you would call a natural instinct. To achieve the paramount performance; give the partner the utmost stimulation while self-gratifying is complex. Tis a consumation devoutly to be wished. We can only assume:YOU DON"T GET NO SATISFACTION.
For pete's sake, everyone involved was an adult, attendance was voluntary, nothing shown could be considered as advocating violence, the class was in a secure place where no one would just wander in.
I mean, there's any number depictions of rape shown on TV ( available to children, in many cases ). That could be considered disgusting and violent.
They're going to bar you off this board, YOU ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE !!!!!!!! Yes sir, there is a huge demand for DILDO OPERATORS !!!! Guess that's why Gates is importing engineers from China and India.... All you PROGRESSIVES, where are you going to find PRODUCTIVE people to PAY for your HAIR BRAINED ideas. Who is John Galt !!!!!!!!!
It seems like this public sex act was "negotiable" to the couple. So I cannot be mad at them. For some, sex is obviously not so private. I beg to differ about the whole instinctive nature too. Good sex requires confidence in one's ability to please.
While the article makes little effort to explain the context in which the instructor felt this demonstration would add to the knowledge base for his students, to dismiss it out of hand as you have attempted strikes me as the height (or better, the nadir) of ignorance. Remaining that obtuse is your prerogative, but if that's your choice, then please refrain from advising the rest of us on what constitutes validity, in education or any other field.
Thank you. It's the truth. There were several things somewhat discomfiting, but as I said up there, people Do these things. You're not going to be a very effective counselor if you don't realize it and/or become familiar. :-)
Agreed, GH - and that is what so FEW people who see the class title "Human Sexuality" miss. It's NOT your granny's sex ed class. I took Human Sexuality, and the issues behind a lot of it are very complex. EVERY person in the Psychology field must understand it and be able to show no discomfort with it.
Not appropriate in a class or anywhere for that matter. One more sign that there is a major moral breakdown with society. Who could possibly think that this kind of behavior in front of anybody let alone 100 people is OK?
People who aren't living a life where they're bound by their stupid religious or uptight morals? If people are fine with nudity and/or sexuality in front of others who have consented, then who are you to object? You don't like it, then don't be in situations like that, but you sure as HELL don't have a right to tell consenting people that it's not appropriate.
believes in slavery under a different name......... Lets see. They became the countries of France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania Denmark and The British Isles. And they are right where they were before the Romans exploited them by conquering them. And guess what? Even Rome and Italy are still there.
I take it that you are some azzhole who likes to pick fights. Is that it bubba? You can take your dreams of U.S. Empire along with your insults and demonstrate anal fixation for the class.
Were those watching told ahead of time that there would be naked people? Then why did they attend even if they were forced to in order to pass the class?
I was told the first day in my college art class that I was forced to draw a nude guy and woman naked, and that they would be showing up naked one day. I withdrew that same day. They can shove that money wherever it fits.
Drawing a girl with her family wearing respectable clothing that is a requirement when attending church is much more artistic in my opinion. Plus, I don't want to be drawing some winnie growing at 'cha with every stroke of the pencil.
I won't be surprised if that teacher has a tumor or some sort of a physical abnormality. With all respect, that art teacher had one pupil enlarged and the other too small. Strange.... Now, Mr. Sandoval was right about there being certain teachers that are wasting public tax money. Those types of classes like that art class belong in private institutions paid completely by the private individual... I doubt that many would show up... plus some friends or family members would question the "students" who apply in such private institutions.
I understand completely. But you can control your inclination toward unwanted arousal by thinking about puppies and feathery creatures I'm told. And you wouldn't have wasted your parents hard earned cash in the process.
Well, if you quit the Human Sexuality class, then you must not be trying for a degree in Psycology or Sociology. You won't get a degree in either of those fields without a number of courses dealing with Human Sexuality.
And Parents wonder where their kids learn perverted behavior....Here's a big clue...It starts with High School perverts and graduates to College Perverts...er Teachers...Like the ones who work part time at the Strip Clubs or Male Dancers...or the ones who count Coup for every Coed they seduce, yup Libeal Socailist Elites at work.....
Yep..... So lets destroy the teachers unions, pay them less and have more teachers forced to strip in clubs to pay the bills for their college educations and degrees.
The learn "perverted" behavior because morons like you don't bother to ever educate them about sex. And who the hell are you to say what's perverted and what's not? Everyone has their own line they draw and won't cross over. Don't project your ideas of perversion on everyone else, especially when you blame schools and teachers for a student's sexual tendencies.
perverted? of course not...we should all f**ck in front of each other all the time....i mean "making love" what the hell is that...it is all about f**king
So many very unusual connection made when none of the dots even come close to connecting....this has nothing to do with liberal....each of us has a comfort zone when it comes to sexuality based on our upbringing and experiences....stop the labeling....I am politically liberal, yet know that this would have been very uncomfortable to observe....sexuality for me is private...and being a more seasoned adult, have learned that it is more than just the physical act....a video would have been more comfortable to watch....in private ...... this is not a political issue....it was a choice made by a professor whose boundaries were vast....as in, had none.
i just love the maturity you show...i am sure it is the same maturity level of these students....and i can bet you that their is not ONE father of a 20 year old girl on here who wishes his daughter had been there to see this
Yeah, my daughters were taught to think for themselves and if they wished to attend for education or for entertainment, I'm sure they would be able to weigh the decision satisfactorily.
Milksteak......... I disagree. My ex-wife who goes to church every Sunday and is considered to be a "pillar of the community" here used to sleep in a separate bedroom with a very large female pit bull dog we had. The only time she came to my bedroom was when she had been out all night and hadn't gotten laid.
I always wondered why I would occasionally find open jars of peanut butter in her bedroom, due to the fact that she had told me in the past how she hated the stuff, having eaten so much of it as a child growing up.
Isn't that a form of consent? Or would that be considered coercion?
FWIW, animals are not capable of giving informed consent because they do not reason on that level. All the dog knew was that she liked peanut butter and that what she was fed tasted funny. She couldn't give and informed consent at all - which is why bestiality and pedophilia are illegal. (and why they should be)
Still one of the best laughs I've had in a month of Sundays. But an apology in this case is just not going to cut it when your a parent and paying though the nose in today's money crises to send your kid to learn how to preform sex acts on each other. Just goes to show, just because it costs a lot does not mean they are getting any better education than at a local community college. Laugh, Laugh!
Steven, those parents will keep paying through the nose if they want their kids to get those psychology, medical and sociology degrees. Courses in ALL aspects of human sexuality are required for at least the psychology.
End of a saw? Was he really so overwhelmed at work that he couldn't even have sex without running the lumber mill?
So... that's how it's done? Gosh... To think how much I've missed... Not...
Why didn't he host the live porn session during class? Clearly the professor knew he was crossing the line of decency, appropriateness and morality.
Humans have been on earth at least 200,000 years. No one needed a class to propagate the species.
This was an excuse for bacchanalian group titillation.
So what?
U of M Fan...... I think MOST people here realize that this was a bit too much over the norm, but we tend to poke fun at it.
This is really a ridiculous thing to write about to begin with. It's one of those articles where you find all kinds of openings in posts made by people who take this article serious.
Most people here realize that it was a bit too much??
Posts don't look like it to me. A BIT too much? LOL
It's Obama's fault.
Damned global warming!
U of M Fan, your post hit that nail dead center!! I'm guessing most will miss the ironic point. Bet she's qualified for even more jobs now!
Recycled Hope-What's your real reason?
This sexuality class is not against the law, was planned, and harmed no one.
I wonder how many students are signed up for "Masturbation 101"????
There's an acronym I like to apply to this situation made famous by Maddox:
UTDIIY,STFU
Unless the d*** is in you, shut the **** up
UGH!!!
So who complained?
A room of fruits and it's called a class. Two pervs on display and a bunch of pervs watching. That's called higher education.
Warchie--I think you're jealous your education was lacking in this aspect.
What's the big deal. It was voluntary, no attendance or participation required, and apparently not done on campus, so why the uproar.
We're not meant to enjoy it. lol
LBowman1, It was not a video, it was a live sex show done in person at the college in the open.
mgo, while you're ranting about the "perverted liberals" I'm going to vent about the "perverted conservatives" where I live who have proposed to pass a law sentencing a woman to death if she has a MISCARRIAGE and can't PROVE that there was "no human involvement." Now THAT is perverted.
And kkarhu, I'm pretty sure if a private, at-home viewing of a video of a girl masturbating had been assigned, the experience for the students would have been substantially less academic, if you know what I mean.
mgo, I live in Georgia and GA State Senator Bobby Franklin has proposed JUST THAT. Here's a link to msnbc video.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/41889946#41889946
Here is a link to the text article on Mother Jones:
http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2011/02/miscarriage-death-penalty-georgia
I'm outraged. My brother, who is a conservative Republican, thinks the senator should be taken on a one-way boat ride.
CAS - my sympathies on having that idiot Franklin in GA. (I thought it was SC pulling that, but close and hardly different.)
theboys said, and SO true..."I can assure all of you these students are KIDS.
Something smells a little Fishy here..... just can't put my Finger on it...
Just a little perverted.
Why?
What was the prof thinking? A little voyeurism at work...
Oh, I agree he had a serious lapse in judgement to allow the live demo following the video tape. I just don't think it was any big deal.
Funny, really. Did they really think it was going to be ok with everybody?
Sounds like a good excuse to watch some live porn. Not that there's anything wrong with that!
All I know is that I went to the wrong college.
Toasty,
Yeah, really. I went to the WRONG schools, I guess. We had to pay for or buy our own smut on the open market, not get free exposure in class.
Well, I just realized, they had to pay for the class. That makes it a very expensive session that also happens to give credit hours.
Hmm, would that be considered 'extra credit'?
I hope everybody got to participate instead of just watching. I guess that's ok for some people, tho, lol!
An uproar about a demonstration of a sexual act... In a human sexuality course. And he had to apologize? You've got to be kidding me.
Your as disgusting as he is, watching a woman pleasure herself with a sex toy in front of 100 students who didn't know before hand what was going on.
A woman gets an orgasm and 100 students get to watch it for free. Way I see it, everyone wins.
Edit: duh, not free... You have to pay for the class.
Do us all a favor and go back into your closet.
your right, we should not fear our bodies or our sexuality...we should also not cheapen it
sick..., to a liberal there is no such thing as good taste or decency. I do not care what goes on behind closed doors but, a public displayed.
There you go again, mgo. I believe sexuality is normal and lovely....but private. 'I am very liberal politically and open-minded, but the lack of privacy or the reduction of sexuality to merely an "act" is disconcerting to me when we are examining a complex human response. Let go of your politics on this. It is irrelevant.
mgo
This reminds me of the scene from Monty Python's Meaning of Life.
Yes great scene
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. American's are such prudes.
Europe sent the their prudes to America and their convicts to Australia...
"Could you get that for me Deidre?"
This was not a human sexuality class at BYU
I had a sex ed class at a community college and our professor was going to a sex shop after class and invited us along for a "field trip" except it was a night class and I knew it would just end up being me and this 65 year old sex professor standing in an aisle of a seedy porn shop at 9pm...and I declined said invitation.
 Disgusting...he should be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, what's disgusting about it?
Exactly what should he be fired for? He broke no laws. People appear to think that a professor should be fired merely because they themselves are prudish with their sexuality. News flash: not everybody has hang-ups about sex.
Why should he be fired??? Was the professor over in the corner masturbating and shouting out instructions??? This is not the Victorian Age.
Why don't you go F#%*^ yourself??
Said he regreted it. He had some prior thought of the end result. Pushing the envelope. I hope he does well in his new job. "Hey, where are my toys"?
Even tho this was "academia" (albeit after hours), last week I would have questioned this prof's judgement. But this week, after the supreme court ruled that those nut-jobs who protest at military funerals have a right to present their words and visuals (signs), I must admit I'd find the prof's presentation much more pleasant to watch.
Exactly. In a free country, these things should be legal.
If sex was legal, then everyone would be doing it....
Oh wait, that's not what I meant.
If sex was legal then they wouldn't be able to tax it.
Oh wait, that's not what I meant.
If sex was legal then they wouldn't be able to bitch about it.
Oh wait, that's not what I meant.
Does anyone know exactly why people complained about this?
Those protests are outrageous. The lack of respect for the dignity of the worth of those who sacrificed their lives is incomprehensible to me.
The sexuality issue is minor in comparison.
Uh, BH? It was a class on human sexuality...
Fire him? Hell, I'd say to give him a raise and congratulate him on his unique educational methods.
Certainly won't hurt class attendance.
Fire him for what? What did he do wrong? He broke no laws.
Boohoo - you're a repressed idiot. No one was forced, nothing illegal was done. What's the big deal?
Damn! And I had just made application to Northwestern. Guess I'll just have to wait for another incarnation of Plato's Retreat. Hmmphh.
LOL
Horny professor, probably just getting off
No apology necessary......"NOW BEND OVER HERE AND DEMONSTRATE THE ACT OF SODOMY!"
Hey now, don't get ahead of yourself; you gotta save SOMETHING for spring break.
LOL@Toasty
So if they're actually discussing sexuality, is that oral sex?
They say you learn more with the hands on approach.
LOL
And while you're at it, queue up Texas Chainsaw Massacre so we can watch some wholesome entertainment.
yeah we should all f**k in public because f**king is what human sexuality is all about
I'm having trouble understanding this.
Best advice for subjects like this.
I agree, Cynster. Sex is a private act that should only be expressed between two consenting adults and their neighbor's dog. Damn liberal perverts!
Jen. Sex was only for procreation in 1911? I doubt that. I doubt that it was only for procreation in 1511. The only reason this kind of thing didn't happen back then is because they didn't have power tools. On another note: This class is useless. Sex is an extracurricular activity. It requires "on the job training." And if you disagree, Go $%$%#! yourselves!
Could not have been said any better, Amen.
I concur 101%
Because we all know this is the only class they have to take to graduate...
Cyn,
While the article makes little effort to explain the context in which the instructor felt this demonstration would add to the knowledge base for his students, to dismiss it out of hand as you have attempted strikes me as the height (or better, the nadir) of ignorance. Remaining that obtuse is your prerogative, but if that's your choice, then please refrain from advising the rest of us on what constitutes validity, in education or any other field.
Well, G H , I was going to point out exactly what you said to Cynsterwytche, but you put it so well, I'll just sit back and applaud!
EVERY person in the Psychology field must understand it and be able to show no discomfort with it.
i dont see what the big deal is it was voluntary and they were all adults. people are too sensative and just need to get some thicker skin.
What happens in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom, not go on live display at our universities... kinda demented, if you ask me.
We didn't.
Then don't go to the completely voluntary after hours exhibition, dolt.
Not appropriate in a class or anywhere for that matter. One more sign that there is a major moral breakdown with society. Who could possibly think that this kind of behavior in front of anybody let alone 100 people is OK?
UH....... Roman Emperors?
Didn't they use leaves back then?
Oh oh, while holding a large sword... this is getting artistic!
Nah, I just quit that class.
My college roommate was an art major. The students in her class always made fun of "Mr Drip" who apparently really enjoyed his job as a nude model.
Well, if you quit the Human Sexuality class, then you must not be trying for a degree in Psycology or Sociology. You won't get a degree in either of those fields without a number of courses dealing with Human Sexuality.
The problem with the presentation was that the female subject was Sarah Palin - and her new boyfriend Charlie Sheen
Sara only does it with Moose.
Those poor moose...
I bet Midge is pissed and looking for Reggie.
What a schmuck!
"Perverted behavior"? Lemme guess...you can only have sex in the dark and have to think about England during the act, yes?
perverted? of course not...we should all f**ck in front of each other all the time....i mean "making love" what the hell is that...it is all about f**king
I don't think I fully understand the problem. Could we please see a video of this event, just to clear up the details.
LOL
i just love the maturity you show...i am sure it is the same maturity level of these students....and i can bet you that their is not ONE father of a 20 year old girl on here who wishes his daughter had been there to see this
*Raises hand*
Yeah, my daughters were taught to think for themselves and if they wished to attend for education or for entertainment, I'm sure they would be able to weigh the decision satisfactorily.
PS They could both edit your post for you.
what next? a demonstration of beastality ? where do you draw the line?
In the barnyard.
You draw the line at consent, SOT. Duh...
Animals can't give consent, which is why it's illegal.
Any other stupid questions?
(and why they should be)
LOL @ CAS......... I know. Just having fun. (And getting in a dig at my ex-wife.)
AH - I sit corrected.
Gee, How did I know this class was taught by a man? What an idiot.
Yeah........ Gloria Steinem would have focused on the females right to eat at the "Y" huh?
I wonder who would teach 'Emotional Manipulation for Fun and Profit'...
