No longer will people stand by and allow corrupt leaders to remain in absolute power. Politicians should all realize that they work for US and not to enrich themselves, corporations, and elites. The Internet is the Great Equalizer giving ordinary people a voice that MUST be heard.
B U L L S H I T !! All it is doing is promoting mob violence. This is NOT the will of the people, it is hoodlums stirring up trouble for everybody. Jail the lot!!!
These are not people in the streets rioting? How can it not be the will of the people? Is mob violence any different than civil war or any war for that matter? How long does the people have to suffer by the hands of corrupt leaders? Until the corrupt leaders stop being corrupt? This corrupt government is coming down!!! Thirty years of mubarak is enough.
Mubarak has been a friend of the US for 30 years, but he has not been a reformer. He made a huge mistake in the early eighties when he had Ayman Al Zwahari in prison for the murder of Sadat and let him go. If he kept him in jail or executed him, since Al Zwahari was behind 9/11, it may not have happened.
The Muslim Brotherhood does have some moderate factions that could help create a representative government. But like anywhere else in the ME, things change.
The people of Egypt, a truly mixed bag of people, need a change. Let them create a better democracy, they are a lot closer to a representative government than most Middle east countries.
Egyptian al-Qaida #2 Ayman al-Zawahiri must be absolutely thrilled with developments across North Africa, esp. in Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood now has a golden opportunity to seize the reigns in Egypt and install political Islam as supreme power. We saw how well that worked in Iran after the Shah was overthrown.
I do believe that USA needs to mind their own business and stay out of foriegn affairs. Hiliary Clinton and our own Government need to worry about our own back yard and let Egypt and the rest of the world take care of their problems. Every time America sticks their nose into other countries business it always comes back to bite us. When is the USA EVER GOING TO LEARN? How dumb can this country be.?
Just as it is in any country of the world including the USA. When you put yourself into a position of being obnoxious or loud and display anger in a public place. Authorities have no idea what you are capable of so they typically respond with force because they have to assume the worst from you. Granted in some locations the pinata takes a much more brutal beating.
theRooster: Apparently you still haven't figured out that the 'status quo' throughout the world isn't working. If all people thought like you, we would still be living in caves.
Thank god for the minority of people throughout history who always believed there was a better form of govt. and were willing to risk their lives on behalf of it, instead of the majority of people who know when the system is failing its people, but still won't get off their lazy asses to do anything about it until it becomes 'popular' to do so.
Steve W, We are all entitled to our opinions, even you. You know what they say, opinions a a#@%#$%, we all have one.
If you would like to be lead by a corrupt leader then good for you. The rest of humanity might not. read what craig speakman wrote above and maybe you might be inspired.
We have to learn to not meddle in other countries' affairs and we have to stop assuming our values which we supposedly share fit every situation.
Ask yourselves, should Egypt be exactly like America? Could it ever be? What if they adopt Democracy and elect leaders who absolutely hate everything about America? And these freedoms everyone speaks so highly of, what do they really mean to any developing nation? Freedom to send all industry abroad to make cheap products that people can no longer afford because their jobs were sent abroad? A corporate class who take 98% off the top while everyone else struggles for the remainder? A wealthy nation that has every choice available for it's citizens but STILL can't feed, house or keep everyone healthy?
Consider, "Democracy" and "Freedom" swept Russia and what happened? The KGB became the new mob and siezed everything, people who were normally well-fed starved and mass confusion reigned as people tried to figure out how basic capitalism worked. Consider the free Iraqi's who were suddendly free to bomb the other side of the Muslim fence and push moderate Kurdish minorities out of the political dialogue.
An honest political discourse, much less change, is open, direct, and certain. This looks like chaos that is going to destabalize and destroy many lives. Perhaps a change is needed but why pretend some new guy really can solve all the problems the other guy couldn't over a 30 year run?
It's really sad that the Nobel Peace Prize has become such a joke. I found myself wondering why him being a prize winner had anything to do with the story.
For his efforts to keep nuclear energy out of the military? Did he chant "no nukes!" or something? That organization needs to take this more seriously and list specifics on why someone was chosen.
Barack H. Obama
The Nobel Peace Prize 2009 was awarded to Barack H. Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".
He's an extraordinarily polarizing figure, calls people names, refused to work with the Republicans, ignored half the nation during the health care debate, and has pretty much abandoned all of our overseas allies unless they're Islamic.
I think you are misunderstanding me Peter. I'm not advocating corrupt leaders. I'm just saying understand that you must be willing to take the beating and are a fool if you don't expect that it will happen. The point is when you get loud with authorities don't it expect it to be peaceful and complain about it when it is not.
I hope there is not another chance for radical Muslims to take over the power. Whit the Islamic Brotherhood no surprise to have Iran as a bigger supporter. New name for Egypt "Islamic Nation Of Egypt."
I think we will see this more and more and encouraged or inspired by the Internet and a wider view of the world. For these countries they are at a crossroad where they may gain personal freedom from this or be supressed even more. I'd like to know where the fundamentalists are in all of this as I would assume that they will encourage the uprisings and then try to grab the power for the emptied leadership.
It can go either way but my hope is that the people do not suffer more as a result of change of government. I hope they are not being used as a tool. I do hope a better leadership replaces whatever leadership is ousted in these countries.
Too many if's to celebrate just yet. This is either a new age or a setback into the past where fundamentalists grab power.
I would be very watchful of the Muslim brotherhood movement. I think the group is banned in Egypt but they just run as independents. I like how they claim to oppose violence, and then say well except for... So basically they see violence as acceptable means to achieve a goal.
This is Exactly what all the 15 million illegal Mexicans in the U.S. should be doing in MEXICO CITY.....be willing to shed a little blood for the future of their children in their own country.
The Arab countries won their independence from the British, French and the Italian with the help of SECULAR forces. A few decades later these same forces are coming back to reclaim their countries from the Western powers who have nurtured the Arab dictators, and also reclaim it from any Al Qaeda or Taliban wannabes who pretend to take the region back in time.
This is the Arab world as it should have been since the 1920's if only the British and the French didn't betray the Arabs and divided the entire area for themselves.
The Muslim brotherhood is firmly based in Egypt; if they cause a overthrow, Egypt will become another Iran in one year; Israel has the most to lose in this upheaval, , with a radical Muslim government in Egypt, Israel will have doubled it's problems; leaving Jordan as the only non hostile Nation in the middle east !
People everywhere have the right to self determination. These dictatorships have been propped up by the West for ulterior motives and despite the delusions of some Egypt is about as democratic as the Soviet Union was. When the regime collapses I hope the thugs in the "security" forces get their firing squads.
So it is ok to have an opinion as long as it is the same as yours. Shutting off my comments is exactly what you say you are against. Let us all speak or none of us. Don't worry, when all stability in the ME collapses NONE OF US will be heard again. So go on, keep advocating the violence and when the moslum pig dogs start crashing planes into our buildings again we can tell them how sorry we are!!
Sad to say this, but this is what it's going to take to be rid of our crooked politicians in America. It's time for the people to rise and tear down our government and rebuild it from ground zero.
more and more people in America are struggling and barely making ends meet while our government officials are living off the people's hard labor and tax dollars.
REVOLUTION can be a good thing for most, but not for those that are no longer welcomedin Washington, and Religion is one of the things that need to be torn down as well.
So you are whining because no one is listening to you call people pig dogs? Why don't you take your own advice, people have the right to be Muslim without being called pig dogs and they aren't all trying to crash planes into our buildings.
Part of the problem is we want them to be just like us, and that makes them angry enough to do something like what was done on 9-11. Stop spewing hatred.
Steve W.-747922
In my opinion ALL religious people mainly muslim and christians should pick a spot on Earth, as remote as posiible, and go blow each other to bits so that those of us who are free of those shackles can get on with our constructive lives.
Yeah Bob, That will solve everything. There is no violence in the world outside Christians and Muslims. **rolls eyes**
Nevermind the fact that most conflicts are really due in part to selfish human nature and nothing at all to do with religion. I'm sure alot of people will disagree with that, but that's only because they want someone to point the finger at.
Shugga Shugga, You my friend are one of those people that understand. Our fore father told us what we must do to keep government in check otherwise the Nation will come down just like Rome did. Even our 'democratic' government will try to squash any resistance just like other dictators and despots like in Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, etc.
Peter Jacobs....That's why they gave us a Constitutional Republic...they rejected the idea of democracy as a suitable form for the Government they were creating....... Short video, you might want to share it.
Mubarak can also be very violent with whomever oppose him or stand in his way, it's about time to taste your own medicine, I wish he could just leave and give someone else a chance to make a difference.
Mubarak is just a human, he was giving a chance to rule as president, he has done his time already, it's been too long now!!! step down now, people are not stupid any more, what kind of Muslim are you? if you can’t share your office with someone else, how long do you want to stay as president? I bet you anything!! once Mubarak pass away his family will take over! that s even sick and that s not Muslim at all, you may just change your religion, you are embarrassing us.
It will be a dark day in the West and the world if Egypt falls. The Muslim Brotherhood is a deeply Islamists organization which has the goal of imposing Islam over the entire earth. This development would bring us much closer to war in the middle-east as Egypt would become an enemy of Israel.
We've known Iran has been ripe for revolution for a long time, and witnessed the brutal response to demonstrations there. Now, thanks in part to social media (who knew), Egypt is in the same situation.
But the difference is Egypt is currently an ally (Iran was too, as well as Iraq, lest we forget). The U.S. has long been criticized for supporting dictatorships--or stability--at the cost of democratic values, and I would add Afghanistan to this list.
These protests are because the people want democracy. That made me wonder... Conservatives say these people want Sharia law.
"The United States, Mubarak's main Western backer" as stated above. I think that says it all. Google Rumsfield shakes hands with Saddam u will see what i mean its all about what other countries can do for the US
Damn, where are we going to get our "terror suspects" tortured if Egypt's Mubarak, and other middle eastern dictators go down?
Under “extraordinary rendition,” alleged terror suspects in the past have been abducted by the CIA and flown to be tortured (and/or murdered) to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Morocco, Jordan and Uzbekistan, among other venues. The practice was started in 1996 under President Bill Clinton, who is said to have rendered 80 suspects, and was vastly expanded by President George W. Bush after 9/11.
Rendition on its face is a violation of Article 3 of the United Nations Convention Against Torture, ratified by the U.S. in 1994. As Wikipedia notes, “Rendered suspects are denied due process because they are arrested without charges and deprived of legal counsel.”
In an interview broadcast live on YouTube, President Barack Obama said the anti-government protests filling the streets show the frustrations of Egypt's citizens. "It is very important that people have mechanisms in order to express their grievances," Obama said.
Yeah, right....
US war protesters cry foul over FBI terrorism raids
September 26, 2010
CHICAGO: Anti-war protesters have claimed their homes and offices were raided by the FBI on Friday in an attempt to silence dissent in the US.
An FBI spokesman confirmed agents searched six locations in Minneapolis and two in Chicago as part of an investigation into ''activities concerning the material support of terrorism''.
Special Agent Steve Warfield of the Minneapolis branch of the FBI declined to confirm who was raided, saying only that the warrants remained sealed. ''There's no imminent threat to the community,'' Warfield said. ''We did not plan on making any arrests and we did not make any arrests.''
Activist Mick Kelly, an organiser of a huge anti-war rally on the opening day of the 2008 Republican National Convention, said the FBI had kicked down his door about 7am on Friday after he had already left for work.
''To me this is harassment of anti-war activists and leaders who have spoken against US intervention in Latin America and the Middle East,'' Kelly said. He insisted he had ''absolutely not'' been involved in any illegal activities.
Activist Jessica Sundin said the FBI had taken her mobile and given her a subpoena to testify before a grand jury in Chicago, and was looking for items related to her anti-war activities and trips to Colombia and the Middle East.
''I am angry,'' she said. ''I want people to know that the government is targeting people for our ideas.''
this is the part i liked, and found not just amusing, but also a seemingly familiar tune.....
"We are confident of our ability to listen. The NDP is ready for a dialogue with the public, youth and legal parties," he said. "But democracy has its rules and process. The minority does not force its will on the majority."
sound familiar? it isnt like these problems just sprang up. ongoing issues, without effort to fix, unemployment for starters. just keep raking it in off the people, getting fatter while they let their people starve. Egypt, a country that for decades sat back and gave the new government time after time, chance after chance, and waited till it finally said "Tunisia made a difference, by saying enough of this sh!t, we can do it too."
even tho we have a ways to go before we run out of fat people, i dont see this as an inevitable event to happen in the US being things keep going the direction they have been. Just because we are the US, does not mean our people wont get fed up. Our constitution is the oldest in history, whats left of it anyway. I hope to see "land of the free, home as the brave" a motto i was born to see be passed on for all generations to enjoy, such as i have, what little is left of it. Seems to me we are not quite as "free, or brave" as we once were allowing our gov and its a$$ suckers to prosper as it still has been but by what means would it take to change it?
I believe we all have a right to make a buck, as long as it is done honestly. to start a business, to see people out there working, and yes helping those "WHO CANT" due to medical reasons. I dont think taking from those who do who keep trying till they have nothing left to stand on by taxing the pi$$ out of them is the answer to a solution people dont want to, or fail to want to resolve, by means of what i have seen in the past 25 yrs by allowing over seas imports to take over the work of fellow Americans. Due in part by high cost maintenance of union shops.
it's all just a matter of time before enough people get together and say enough of the promise to act untill you are elected, and then loose that promise once the $$ starts to line their pockets.
It's good that so many people in Egypt are demanding an end to the autocratic dictatorship that's been in power for decades. It's good that people are enthusiastically and, for the most part, non-violently demanding freedom and democracy. But the reality is that it's radical Islamic forces who will benefit from the fall of the Mubarak regime. Radical Islamic terrorists, the ones who have been murdering Christians in order to ethnically cleanse Egypt of Christianity, are poised to impose a radical Islamic dictatorship on Egypt. Islamic terrorists are the ones with the guns, the money and the desire to kill their way to power. The demonstrations may start with the promise of a new day, with the hope for freedom and democracy, but they will, in all likelihood, end with the violent oppression of all Egyptians.
I would agree it will create a void, and some group will gladly step in. The question is what group? I think the odds are this won't end well and going forward the people wanting to see change will so, but it won't be as they thought.
Let's see....1978....riots in the streets of Tehran, the Shaw was kicked out and the good people of Iran got themselves a new leader so they all could be free and bask in the rewards of democracy.....NOT!!!!
Carla, that is true. Same thing in Iraq, you get the dictator out and see what you get. Same in Afghanistan after the soviets left, you get the Taliban. Look at Somalia, same old thing. You ceate a vacuum and the Islamic radicals hijack the movement.
When you have one group of people who don't use violence often and another that use violence as often as I use a toothbrush it's no wonder you always wind up with those using violence running things.
Iranians are at least Master of their own house. It is like China saying our systek is rotten since we are drfowningin debt and still cannot fix our hosue in order.
I will prefer freedom any time then having our government to be puppet of foreign Government. Shah was our pony in Iranl, He danced to our tune and not his people. His abuses in Iran like Sadam Hussein's abuses in Iraq when he was our dog there and went to war with Iran at our tacit support and armaemnts. He dide our bidding while killing couple of millions Iranians and Iraquis and gassing Kurds. Freedom, freedom from hegemony of any power including USA is much desirable than slavery of foreign power. Shah was disgrace to Iran and was installed by us by overthrowing democratic Governemnt of Iran.
An end to the autocratic dictatorship, the new leadership will be Muslim brotherhood that was banned from voting because they will win. So Mubarak was the only candidate for president. However, a new ruling party will not help Egypt from this global recession
Seems to me that the problem is the education in the region is tied in with the religion. Anyone with enough will to oust the dictatorship installs what they think is the better form of government as taught by their teachers ... almost invariably a theocracy.
I believe there is about to be civil war and a major power shift throughout the muslim world. If tomorrow's demonstration is peaceful and leads to greater democratic reform, then good. But all too often in history, one dictatorship has been replaced by another. Will this power shift be like in the bloodless coup in the Phillipines during the 80's, or will it be like the violent Russian Revolution? I think it's going to get very ugly to say the least. We'll see.
Iran had a democracy before it was overthrown by the CIA, and the Shah was installed to stop the nationalization of Brittish Petroleum. Things would have gone differently if The World's Greatest Democracy hadn't imposed a king on a great people.
Iran so called "great people" modern healthcare seem to embrace their FASCIST GOVERNMENT and FASCIST RELIGIOUS LEADERS and enjoy watching the amazing spectacleof stoning women to death at soccer stadiums. I guess you think that only "great people " living under Shari law are righteous. The civilized world would disagree. Spectacular Human Rights Abuses that run Ramped under Islamic Shari Governments will never be looked upon as a sign of a "great people".
@Modern Healthcare - Agreed - another opportunity lost - just like the foolish military adventurism of the Bush/Cheney government squandered another after 9/11.
Peter Jacobs:...No longer will people stand by and allow corrupt leaders to remain in absolute power. Politicians should all realize that they work for US and not to enrich themselves, corporations, and elites...
When do we get to demonstrate? 40+millions of US citizens do not have a job. Those who lost their retirement following 2008 crash are back to work at the age 67+. The government is trying to say unemployment is 9.4% but they hide fact that there those who are no longer on unemployment or have been out of work over 3 years. They also forget the fact that new college graduates have not really have found jobs that fits their qualifications.
What a loony comment! The people in this country have chosen and there is a way to change if it does not work. Unfortunately the span of memory for Americans is very short and they fall back to the same people that stay for protecting the wealth of the people on the top and hording the dollars with the few "Have's". Do you have your focus on the politicians that ensure the wealth of Walmart, Halliburton, BP and which transport the jobs overseas with tax dollars of the US? Make sure that they will not be elected again, and we are fine to take our course to a prosperous America.
Hopefully we will not have "mob riots" and we will enact the changes with our votes.
But there are always those who will not want to wait, they will want to take and take violently because they feel "disenfranchised" and entitled to take.
There is also the criminal element who will use any excuse to go violent.
Do you have your focus on the politicians that ensure the wealth of Walmart, Halliburton, BP and which transport the jobs overseas with tax dollars of the US?
Don't forget to add GE to that mix.....power, massive government funding (bailouts), shipping jobs overseas, and (until recently) owner/influencer of media outlets.
Honestly....How can you, in your heart of hearts, actually believe that our current process of voting actually works? Two years ...four years...revolving politicians pulling the same scams on the people.
If the laws don't change today to fix our political situation, then we also will see demonstrations and mobs.
the answer is you can demonstrate and march any time you want. We have freedom in this country, whereas not so much in Egypt. If you prepare yourself for new-economy jobs, you will get one. In fact there are many jobs that go begging for lack of trained workers. One example: the oil industry cannot find enough trained staff to handle expansion. Yes, off-shoaring is a problem, but unlike Egypt the US is a growth engine and will work out of the recession. If all else fails, here you can launch a vegetable stand and no police will harass you.
You can do that anytime right now. I am sure if you do you will be labeled a racist, or an angry misguided citizen, since things are much better for you. Think of all the mudslinging generated at the Tea Party and still is. However if the unions want to protest, they are considered valiant and courageous. It is the safety net that has stopped the protesters from taking to the street. Unless a jobs replaces those benefits, you will eventually see people take to the street.
john-1453080..." If all else fails, here you can launch a vegetable stand and no police will harass you."
Oh really??..Think again. ...The new FDA regulations will make that more and more difficult as they haven't inspected your fruits and vegetables and must protect the public from the dangers your produce may inflict.
"One of the more contentious provisions of the bill would require farmers who sell to the public to get the contact information from every single customer. Some customers at roadside stands might balk at giving a stranger their personal information just to buy a cucumber, especially when they can buy some from the grocery store without having to give up their name and address."
P.S. The riots in Tunisia were sparked by just such an occurance.
"The wave of demonstrations was sparked by the suicide of an unemployed college graduate in early December.
Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a government building in the town of Sidi Bouzid after police confiscated his fruit cart, saying he was selling without a permit, according to Amnesty International. He died January 4 from his injuries."
We can always march on Washington...we have that right.
But marching is not going to make the economy better....there is not any money that is the problem. How does Obama think the US is going to pay for these social programs he wants, and a war and illegals healthcare and education, and .....and.....and.... we cannot...the USA must internalize and take care of our own people...deport those that do not belong here...bring our men and women home from war and close our borders....keep our money here...take care of America for awhile....
The US already went through a revolution when the first African-American president was elected in 2008 with the help of the 45 million people who have no health insurance.
The people have spoken but then there was a counter revolution by the burguoise with the help of millions of fools who think their guns are being taken away, or that their health care will diminish or whatever illusion Fox news and their corporate ilk have implanted in their heads.
The US needs another revolution by all those being kept out of the system by the rightwing forces who're trying to take "their country back". The US belongs to all and our tax money will be put to good use to help everyone in need.
All you have to do is get on map quest for directions to Washington and begin your march if you truly feel that it is necessary.
We have these things called elections in the U.S. . The purpose of these elections is to allow the citizens to pick those who will lead our government. I get the feeling that electoral process is something in which you have never participated.
Olias of Sunhillow
Let me get this straight. As long as candidates with whom you agree are elected you fully support the electoral process, however if a candidate whom you dislike is elected by the same process you advocate their violent removal. I would that you look up the meaning of the word HYPOCRITE. Of course your last statement pretty well demonstrates where your loyalties lie.
What the socialist in charge and his band of harpies ( Pelosi, Reid, etc..) do not understand is that to have a nation that is economically sound...you MUST have big businesses and Wealthy people....because Big business, is not a bad word...Big businesses HIRE people...that means when we have huge corporations they are making money that goes out as paychecks to the employees...and they use that money they make to 1. put money into the US tax coffers. 2. they buy groceries and goods for their families, and that supports other businesses and jobs. 3. they pay for healthcare, which supports other jobs and industries. etc......
Wealthy people.....also use goods...which support jobs....wealthy people pay taxes too...which goes right back into the US govt ....
When people are unemployed because this socialist gov has attacked and killed big businesses...there is no money from an overburdened goverment to support the masses....The favorite comment of the Democrats is "Bush's trickle down effect does not work"...Really? So, how is the trickle up doing? Did you ever hear that you cannot get blood from a rock??? Well its true...There is no money for the people now...
We need big businesses back in America.....we need to put America back to work.
the socialist playbook says to keep the masses poor and uneducated and they can be controled.
It's clear what I meant is a revolution through the ballot box, and not the bullet box like so many counterevolutionaries fascists keep talking about.
And, Sandi, Pelosi and Reid ARE rich. Very rich and they have the help of multibillionaries like George Soros. So they all understand the capitalist system and certainly don't need any lessons from someone who wants to deprive people of their rightful right to health care and a public education etc.
We need to have ourselves a country and stop enslaving ourselves to the Wall Street mafia.
My good god what a scary ass you are. You carry a lot of water for people that say they want a social Utopia but really just want power. Yeah...Fox news is the culprit. what a complete delusional ass you are.
We need revolution of the people too. When even Obama sleeps with Big Rich people there is little hope. When Obama gives us reform that To Friedman calls "regime of susb standard solutions" it is shame. It is like inving a guet for dinner and serving half cooked food that looks good on table but thsoe who eat are for long suffering nights.
We have no leaders. Bunch of politicians that give good speeches, act like experts, invade other coutries and persent us with false enemies are disgrace. If any of them were any good, how come lower 85 % of the people have no increase in income or standard of living while top 10-15 % rack up zillions and have a lifestyle that we cannot dream about even. Liberal Heros and mine too spend seven million dollars for their daughters wedding. I can often walk miles before finding any one who even dreams of having that kind of total assets except they dream of winning lottery.
you MUST have big businesses and Wealthy people....because Big business, is not a bad word...Big businesses HIRE people...that means when we have huge corporations they are making money that goes out as paychecks to the employees...and they use that money they make to 1. put money into the US tax coffers.
Yes, but the people big businesses hire are in China. The paychecks go to China. The big businesses are on a hiring spree, just not in the US. If American businesses had hired the people they have hired over the last few years inside the US instead of outside, our unemployment rate would be closer to 6% rather than the 10% where it currently is.
No, big business does not put money into the US tax coffers. Exxon, for example, last year got money BACK from the US government. One third of corporations don't pay any taxes at all. The US corporate tax code was written by lobbyists for big business.
The US has some of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, but those taxes are all paid by small mom and pop businesses who can't afford to hire armies of lawyers, accountants and lobbyists. Big business pays minimal taxes and carps even about that.
Mike: Glad you pointed out the fruit stand info. S 510 does indeed make it possible for the gov. to confiscate your stand, food, etc. And exactly right about the poor snook in Tunisia.
Raj: We just might get that revolution if the jobs keep going away and the debt keeps rising and the little children in washington don't grow up and learn to lead rather than follow party lines. I think if it happens it will be peaceful protests...hopefully
Big business may have started here but now big business is Global, no loyalties to any country, just the shareholders
skeeter, its not the process itself that is broken. We could have a whole new house every 2 years, a new president every 4 and a new senate every 6 years. The answer isn't to shorten the cycle (aren't they all already juts campaigning?) The answer is to have a better educated voting population. More people getting out to vote, more transparency in the election process. What are the candidates for? A simple point by point comparison on issues would be nice. The other thing we need to do is get foreign and business money out of the race. Maybe shorten the time they can campaign, I have never had a job where the boss wanted me to be looking for my next employment opportunity when I was supposed to be fixing stuff.
The last point I have is that we, for the most part, like who we elect. But we don't agree on who everyone else elects, but that is how our system of government is set up. I hear people crying about pelosi or whining about boehner, but they don't come from that district. If people would focus on their own politics, focus on their own back yards. We can all tone down the rhetoric and start voting for people we want to represent us, not just monied interests.
Sandi is right that we need to close our borders and our minds. If we can simply plug our ears and drown out the sound of the rest of the world, we will find prosperity. We don't need foreign investments. We don't need foreigners to buy our goods and services. We should throw out any technology that interferes with any level of unskilled labor. We should give school children maps of the Earth with only only two countries labeled; America and Not-America. Then we drive out anyone who cannot trace an ancestor back to the Mayflower, America is only for Americans.
Isolationism is retarded. Period. Didn't work for the Chinese or anyone else who tried it and it won't work for us.
*Sigh* people, The First Amendment of our Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Yes voting is one way, but citizens are granted other ways to voice disapproval (majority or minority). I don't see where Imperial said anything about being an angry mob as some of you are portraying. "Marching" can be done peaceably.
Olias, oh where in the Constitution is it the federal government's responsibility for health care or education? They are not mentioned.
"Promote the general welfare" is not the same as "provide". Also, "welfare" doesn't mean what you may think:
www.usconstitution.net/glossary.html#WELFARE
As for Pelosi and Reid - it's OK for some people to be rich as long as they are Democrats? That's what I get from your comment. Many rich people donate and volunteer to causes & charities too, whether they be Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever.
If the Egyptian had the right to keep and bear arms, Mubarik and his ilk would already be gone. As it stands, they'll have to eat sh*t and die unless the regime is nice enough to let them have an election that isn't rigged. We pick some great allies don't we?
Peter Jacobs: when do we "get to demonstrate"? Are you waiting for official permission? Unfortunately, people in the USA are so diverted by Facebook and cable TV and the internet, that they'll do nothing until they start starving. If it weren't for welfare and unemployment insurance there would have been a revolution already. They always manage to keep it just below the boiling point so people don't hit the streets.
Ok...we need to get a Newsvine candidate. We will call it the "Viner" party and show those DC folks how to get things done! So...who wants to through the hat in the ring?
Oh I don't know Mac.. You raise gas up to $4.00 a gallon and the people here in the USA start getting pretty pissed. Of course now that they have been conditioned a little it will probably take $5.00/gallon the next time.
Everything is proceeding as I have forseen it, (Emperor Palpatine)
Riots in the streets. The Aflockolypse. People dying in Earthquakes/Floods/Heat+Cold Waves. Banking struggling. Brother fighting against brother. Nuclear Arms re-asserting itself into our presence. Leaders giving blind ambition to their sheep on all sides. Hidden HAARP, FEMA, and Skulls and Crossbones societies. Global Climate change. Magnetic Pole shifting. Open Debates about Roe V Wade. School Shootings on the rise. A new look at the 13.2 Billion year old discovered galaxy. Shootings of Public officials. Governement poisoning of animals. The Jewish temple rebuilt.
MrR.....you didn't factor in Luke and there's the error of your calculation!
The Force WILL be brought into balance. It matters little in the big scheme of things what people try to do to prevent it. The Force, Mother Nature, God's Will or whatever it's called will prevail. We can fight against it but it is a war we cannot win. We might win a few battles along the way and that might just be enough to make people think that they really are the Masters Of The Universe but Like the Emporer said to Luke when he thought he going to kill the last Jedi...it's a pity that you found out right at the end. (or something like that)
johnnyt: Young fool. Only now, at the end, do you understand. Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side! You have paid the price for your lack of vision! - Emperor Palpatine
;-)
All I can say is...remember Y2K? Yeah, just as I suspected...until I mentioned it, you haven't thought of it in 11 years.
The world will come to an end at precisely 9:46 PM CST (plus 37.9684451 seconds) on April 1, 2011. The entire planet will be flushed down an astronomic sized toilet arriving out of the northern sky. If you don't have scuba gear, now's the time to buy.
I read the prophecy for myself in my kitty's litter box. The most recent x-ray of my dental work says the same thing.
Loo....my hat's off to you! You recited it perfectly except it might have been You WILL pay the price...... The old hard drive on my neck is starting to get some bad sectors on it and I couldn't repeat the line for the life of me. But I truly loved the Stars wars Saga. George Lucas was truly a master of sci-fi, I believe he was in a league by himself. I have a friend who worked on the original Star Wars movie for Digital Equipment. He used to tell me things about how the special effects were done. We kinda take it all for granted now but back in 1977 it was cutting edge.
@loo e loo I, no y2k was when Jericho fell, er um, oh wrong fantasy wwe is not star wars. Y2k that is when Darth Mauls relative brother and fellow sith was born. (see Star Wars Clone Wars Episode #14). Has anyone noticed that Han Solo has not yet appeared as a child in the Clone wars. His character is at least 10 years older than LUKE? oops sorry im side tracking the topic again, with all apologies. PS Sally from Newsvine, your penalty for the cooked rooster was incomplete. He used that phrase at least 5 times. lol
I'm not sure if you'll be back to see this, but...
johnnyt, I have to admit I got it on-line. You can search "[movie title] quotes" and several sites will give you popular quotes. I saw Star Wars 20 times when it came out. I agree, pretty much everything George Lucas does turns to gold, although I wonder if he would be where he is today had he not obtained the franchise rights.
I just made one last pass through. I love the Star Wars Saga. It had all the right elements put together in just the right way to keep us coming back for more.
It's hard to say which was my favorite but it might have been The Empire Strikes Back.
I am an American living in Egypt and am offended by theRoosters comment. Do you live in Egypt? Do you know how the average person lives? These are not hoodlums. They are normal people, some with jobs, some without jobs that are living in a society they feel is unjust. They have the nerve, finally, to say enough is enough and then you call them "hoodlums" and say "jail the lot". They have families and are fighting for their families, no matter the cost to themselves.
It is unfortunate that you have those crazies here in the US that make stupid comments without perhaps even knowing where Egypt is. These are the same people that call for bombing everybody back to the stone age. Mubarak and his clan have robbed Egypt for years, same as the Saudi Royal Family or the other Gulf rulers. The fact that these corrupt leaders end up with asylum in Saudi says a lot. I wonder if they eventually apply for asylum in the US...
I would like to see protesters without rioting. There is a big difference. Crowds can become unruly very quickly and then a lot of damage is done that later costs a lot to fix, or in deaths can't be fixed.
especially the truth about one group of people! All of these people are scum and all of that people are scum.
The only scum I see are the racists pointing fingers. I know people get all upset when you use the word racists, but when you apply generalizations to a group of people (all Muslims are scum) that's what you are.
The only scum I see are the racists pointing fingers.
I would say, frightened and angry people, rather than racists. I've noticed that while the level of terrorist activity in western countries has diminished over the last 8 years, of late the level of angry and racist outbursts against Arabs and Muslims has grown. I do not think it is due primarily to the bombs going off in places like Islamabad or Kabul, but rather to the economic troubles we are facing at home.
In 2008, our economy cratered, and Americans saw themselves staring into the abyss of financial ruin. Too many have since fallen into that abyss; others are yet fearful.
In times such as these people, all people, tend to look around at all conceivable threats to their security and seek to remove them quickly. Thus you have people proposing such previously unthinkable solutions as deporting all Muslim citizens, or, worse, get rid of all Muslims, everywhere, our own version of Hitler's "Final Solution".
If our nation suffers another major, terrorist attack in the near future, our collective reaction will be that much more violent because of this background climate of fear. Such a reaction is precisely what Osama bin Laden and his group want. The 9/11 attacks were not intended to destroy us, only to draw us into an all-out war with the Muslim world. If such an attack occurs, it will be the true of our nation's resolve, whether we do only what is necessary in response, and avoid being drawn into an all-out conflict.
As to the unrest occurring in Tunisia and Egypt, it is my hope that they lead to a more democratic government in both countries.
I hope so....... Not for my own sake, but for the millions of young people today who are living in a world of Hoover/Reagan "trickle down" economics. The overkill and hoarding of wealth in the world is going to cause a serious implosion. Not just here...... but around the world.
In the words of my generation.... "Power to the People!"

The 'trickle down' prosperity of Hoover/Reagan is a hell of a lot better than the 'trickle up' poverty that Obama and the Dimocratics have given us.
Now that you two have agreed with your OWN perception, lets see if we all can agree with a perception that works for us all.
Well said Raidaz, we don't need anything trickling anywhere. We need a chance to work and make a living, have a nice life and leave this place better for our kids. I like the idea that everyone should work hard, make their way in the world, not be a burden to society and have a good life. I also like living in a world where we help our sick, young, poor and elderly with some social safety nets. No need for trickling, just a need for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
this article is about Egypt .not the U.S not Tunisia, not Obama .Doug Miller is right about radical Islamist terrorists.. similar to hamas hezbollah al quida or sometimes the same who are fueling the flames against good of a pluralistic society in Egypt with their Copt Christian society and for the good of Israel who has good realtions with Egypt just as Jordan does.. we can`t let Egypt fall to Isalmic terrorist groups who are waiting in the wing to take advantage of mob violence and chaos..the stakes are too high . what.all countries in the region should have done and still need to do .is recognize Israel just as most countries did when the Jews reclaimed theri homeland in 1948 ..instead they blab about "Zionist entity " in their genocidal Hitler type rants and the ayatoolahs in Iran also,, Egypt must preserve its integrity and not let the terrorists .whittle done the few positive influences change yes ..but not one inch to Islamic terrorists who are genocidal maniacs for both Jews and Christians in the area...I`m repeating myself but the point must be driven home.the hidden agenda which is not even hidden much anymore ..of Isalmic terroist groups in the mideast must be
Most of what Bart said is true, but there is not a damn thing we can do about it. Anything we support in this part of the world will be rejected because we are the "Great Satin" to them. We would be better off keeping our nose out of it. We sure has hell better not show support for the group we "really" want to prevail.
dd141 this is about Egypt not about president Obama who is both a Christian and is fighting full force ahead against Isalmic terroism..just go away from here and stop polluting this article with idiotic chatter .go to the Obama bashing page if you want and sip your tea with he other fools and liars who deliberately say Obama is a Muslim to muck up the fact that he is getting more popular and some sore losers and sour grape people can`t handle it..!!
Well Neil Abercrombie found Obama's birth certificate, Oh, wait a minute, they can't find one now can they. Probably stolen by some right wing nut. I'm sure it is there. And besides, he's gone to church at least 4 times since the last election. Add in the 3 or 4 times he went in the two years between elections and that is positive proof that he is a Christian.
Wait, I thought conservatives were also all worked up because he attended Rev. Wright's church for 20 years. Got married in a Christian church and eats pork, too. Pretty good cover for a Muslim. Face it, he's an American and a Christian, his mom looked like my mom and was also from Kansas (we're squarely in the middle of the contiguous 48 states, and you can't get more American than that.) He was elected by a majority of Americans, and his popularity is on the rise. Relax, there will be another election in 2012, and if he isn't popular at the time, he'll lose. And may God bless and watch over the people of Egypt as they fight The Man!
A lively discussion so far. Wingsgirl has it right. If you're not there, how can you really comment on what is happening? You're only seeing "the media" side. I like to see freedom "breaking out" in many parts of the world to get rid of the despots who have abused their respective societies. I also agree with Forwhatitsworth (seems we're from the same generation), Americans have a very short memory...about two weeks, and are very gullible. It's hard to watch people such as Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, and...Paris Hilton (same group) being given media coverage with their unintelligible babbling and there are actually people who cheer. Please "insert brain"! The liers continue to yell their fictional stories so they can put more cash in the pockets of their corporate mentors and people as they are being fleeced actually believe them. Amazing, but very sad.
Every generation must over come its bigots I suppose. One would think that after even a cursory view of history, that it would be obvious that bigotry and protectionism fails. I suppose though it takes effort to take that cursory view.
to continue ..seen clearly and combatted with full force by organized governments who have an obligation to their citizens and the region and the world... and Egypt sees clearly this menace and will continue fight frontally hamas hezbollah iran and others who want to bring the devil of Isalmic police state sto the region and kill Christians and Jews..this is the nitty gritty. no mincing of words..I am neither Isreali oe a "Zionist" not that i have to say that but not one more inch and zero tolerance to Islamic terrroism . its a world problem ..!!..
ah. I have many people according to the votes who support me ..you`re calling them idiots also.. deal with the issues ..I must really hit a raw nerve for you to call me an idiot ..instead of rebutting me..also you should be suspended for attacking a person but I`ll leave it up to others to denounce you...as for "astounding ".ignorance that almost sounds like a compliment..do you supprt the Muslim brotherhood.. support the destruction of Israel.. the killing of Copt Chrisitans in Egypt the undermining of governments by Isamic terrorism since you declare me an idiot.. tell me if you`re not worried if the mob violence continues unchecked in Egypt ?
I've been to Egypt. I've seen the corruption first hand. I've seen the poverty first hand. I've met the most wonderful, kindhearted, lovely people you would ever want to meet. I went thinking everyone lived in a tent and rode a camel. Ah, alas, I was so wrong. They are ordinary people like you and I who only long to have the best for their families. I know those who have been jailed for the demonstrations will be beaten and tortured unmercifully. The policemen who are doing this will be without jobs themselves in a few short years. It's the way their system works. I wish they would think about this, lay down their weapons and join the protests. I hope if a new government comes into place, their first order of business will be to release those who risked their freedom to bring them to power. My love, blessings and support to the good people of Egypt.

Most of the people in jail deserve to be there. A lot of them belong to the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood which has been trying to seize power there in Egypt for many, many years. They are also the group which assassinated President Anwar Sadat back in 1981. Egypt is a police state for a reason. If they weren't, then some really bad guys would be in charge.
Revolutions happen under certain circumstances and yes, we need to take note on what those conditions are. When there is a widening gap between the wealthy and poor, the have and have nots, even, or especially when they economy is booming, a nation can expect a revolution. When there is perceived corruption in the government, a nation can expect a revolution. When educated people cannot find work in their field, a nation can expect a revolution. When the religious leaders of a nation decide it is time to change not only the government, but everything about a society, a nation can expect a revolution.
Revolutions often happen because, even though conditions are bad, the people have high hopes, they are optimistic that they can change things. The sad part is that often revolutions turnout badly. They end offering even more oppression. It is a dangerous game.
Sense when is a Presidency a regime???. I guess it is when you are president for thirty years or more.Other words it is just another word for dictator in some parts of the world.People don't get to vote for who they want in office every four years they are told that the guy that is there is going to be in charge no matter what. I my self don't think that "WE" Americans would put up with someone more then three terms. No matter how good he or she is.Change is good .except when it burdens the people with a despot.Maybe the People of Tunisia,And Egypt. Are getting tired of their Governments. Lets just hope that these changes are for better relations with the rest of the world. And it does not breed more terrorist. Now there is Libya, and a lot of African countrys that need to get their heads on straight. England has a Monarchy but the Queen is just a figure head she does not dictate to the People .they have a Parliament to pass laws.
I hope this is a wake up call for the US lawmakers. The common people will take corruption and lies from the government for just so long before the react.
Unfortunately the Muslim Brotherhood, the same fine group that burns Churches and kills Christians and rapes and abducts young Christian girls in Egypt will most likely take power. The Egyptian people will be no better off, most likely worse off just as the Iranians lost freedom and are suffering under an Islamic Paradise while sittin on ALL that oil!
Who would have thought that one would have more freedom livin under the Shaw than under a SHIA theocracy the Iranians now have? I doubt a Sunni Theocracy will be any better. It will most likely be like livin in Saudi Arabia except ALMOST everyone except the ELITES will be dirt poor!
The Muslim Brotherhood is also the group that planned and carried out the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981. They are also the group that gave rise to al-Qaida #2 Ayman al-Zawahiri who will soon be releasing another video from his cave in Pakistan praising the martyrs of Egypt trying to overthrow the present Egyptian regime.
Is the present Egyptian regime a bouquet of roses? No. Are they better than a lot of what is likely to replace them? Yes.
Spot on! That is what comes from a tightrope walk trying to stay in the middle of the road when Islamic terrorist groups appear, facilitated by a lazie-faire attitude that even regims like in Egypt tollerate as these groups use the democratic protections to destroy the Government. Plaestinians were taken over, Iraq is on its way to Iranian dominance, and Lebanon is in freefall. There is no policeman of the world, not the British Empire or the US, or the UN or EU. They are on their own unless we see Russia step in then we normally would, but not with this administration.
For God's sake man, get your spelling right. It's not Shaw its Shah. If you're going to spew ignorant dribble about history and governmental structure, at least put in enough effort to spell the title of a persian king correctly.
tweet.. penalty for unnecessary complaint on spelling. Blogger misuse of the typonese language. Hallow1 will be assesed a 20 word penalty. Repeat 3rd down.
Do you really think the Iranians were 'Free' under the Shah? If they were so content with the system of the Shah why did they allow it to fall? They may not like what they got after the Shah fell, or maybe they do....who knows? It may continue through trickery and deception or it may continue because people haven't really decided to do something about it.
If this unrest in Africa and The Middle East is legitimate and not being influenced by outside interests it may be the start to a real peace in that region. I doubt it though, because there's always someone somewhere always trying to stack the deck.
Who ever said the Iraninas were Free under the Shah? He just killed only about 3000 of them in about 30 years. The Atathola(SP) killed over 30,000 commies who helped him gain power in the first year. Now they are hangin GAYS and rape victims from cranes so they strangle SLOWLY to death while their loved ones attempt to hold their bodies up so they don't strangle while they are being beaten by the religious police. Great Country! Makes disturbin vidios though!
Mac...you're the one who was alluding to the amount of freedom people have, had or was perceived to have had. The Shah was friendly to our politics and our oil industry. The Ayatollah wasn't. The company I worked for had men scrambling for the helicopter as the fences were being torn down by a mob with mean on their minds. The people breaking down the fences were convinced that the Company was complicit in their life under the rule of the Shah and they were looking for some payback. That's the message that the Bush's and Cheney's should have gotten, instead the got enough power to extract some retribution for the Ayatollah's mobs 'stealing away' 'their' business and assets. I believe if we didn't go 'all in' with certain people our long term goals would be more easily obtainable. When these outbreaks of rebellion occur after we've propped up their 'oppresors'(in the rebels view) it can't help but hurt our standing their. The world is changing....and I believe a lot faster than a lot of people realize and for the US to stay in position as the world leader we must adopt a more coherrent policy and understand that it's not the 19th century and the United Fruit Company types aren't effective anymore.
So how'd that change worked out for the Iranians? We're gittin our own change now by the Trans National BANKSTERS runnin this country into the ground so they can establish their Global New World Order.
I couldn't begin to tell you how that change worked out for them, however, you probably could go there and ask them for yourself, or you might watch some American TV news that rounded up a few dozen people and took some pictures then splashed 'em all over a few hundred million tvs and called it a populist movement. 1979 was just another step in the evolution of the area.
I know Iran had top notch American made F-14's, stinger missles, sidewinders (I think) and who knows what else back in the 70"s. Those top of the line latest technology weapons didn't do one solitary thing to stop an uprising...that much I do know...in fact they may have helped to precipitate it. Afganistan, by the way, is right there in the same neighborhood and the Soviets couldn't take them with 10 years of some the most brutality they could dish out. I believe that we do not have the first idea about the people in that area and the more we meddle the worse we look.
You're getting way off topic about an uprising by people less than 30 years old in Egypt when you start talking about international bankers, I think. I can't seem to make the connection, maybe you can bring me up to speed about it?
Johnny, These stongmen are corrupt. The Religious fanatics who take over, especially Iran are corrupt and continue the drain on the people sendin the money to Swis accounts. The connection with the BANKSTERS and the NEW World Order is that they are runnin this country ALSO. All this talk about President Oboma being a Marxist is just supterfuge.
Bush I, II, CLinton and Preident Oboma are ALL Agency developed. Look how many Goldman Sachs BANKSTERS have been in both ALL gov since the Great Depression. What is happenin in America is the same as what is happenin overseas. THe NWO is draining ALL assets so they will control the worlds resourses. Only the ELITES will have anything. The rest of us will be livin 3rd world.
If the protesters want to make some real progress they will band together and write up a Declaration of Freedom and a Constitution to go along with it. That way their movement will be taken more seriously and it will also help prevent other radicals with oppressive motives from rushing in to fill the void should Mubarak fall. The last thing they and the rest of the world needs is another Islamic dictatorship in the ME or anywhere else.
If the protesters want to make some real progress they will band together and write up a Declaration of Freedom and a Constitution to go along with it.
MAC-101 where are you getting your information ? I have been going to Egypt on business for over thirty years and nothing you are saying is true...You are either very very stupid or just an ignorant person.
Oh, those dirty lying Christians are burning their own churches, killin their own Christian vilagers and burning out their own stoires and sellin their daughters to good Muslim men for goats and camels!
Of course you are not going to see it on a daily basis with your own eyes. Engine search Egypt/Copts Church burnings whathaveya!
You re talking rubbish again ,,,You know exactly who is spreading those rumors..a bunch of right wing holly roller nuts that think the whole world is against them. In fact Egyptian Christians are treated no different than anyone else in Egypt. I work with both Christians and Muslims over there..On the other hand we treat Muslims in the US like second class citizens...Quit making up stuff. Anyone that has been to Egypt knows you are talking rubbish.
Daltex, Those right wing Christian nuts and Zionist Mossad agents have been busy. Googlin Coptic church burning gets 172 thousand hits, but Coptic church Boimbing gets over half a million.
I thought they burned most of the churches like they do in Nigeria, Sudan, Niger, Ivory Coast, Kenya and so on! They've gone high tech. Dem Muslims are real discriminated here in the US of A. LAst I read they had the highest per capital income of any groups, includin whites. That's even with us floodin the country with poor Somolians! Gotta go.
Next time you go to Egypt, try talking to someone other than your business partners. Knowing both Christian and Muslim Egyptians, it is you who doesn't know what he is speaking of.
Where is the Nobel Prize winner returning from and why is he not in his country to begin with?????
I remember another country where they rioted in the streets and someone returned from another country. to give the people a better way. They are still rioting in the streets of Iran(when possible) and they still want a better way.
We should wake up and quit propping up corrupt , dictatorial regimes like Mubarak. Eventually we will pay the price...Remember Pinochet, Mosadek, even Ben Ali and other dictators we backed....All gone and we are left holding the bag.
I see some people are waking up to the fact that americas,so called democarcy does not work either, when you have people who have been in power positions for 20 plus that is not a democracy, plus camoaign contributions drive loyalty more then the love of ones citizens and country,so run out and reelect the people who have ran this country 14 trillion dollars in debt
America's democracy doesn't work because we were never suppose to be a democracy. We were suppose to be a republic. The founding fathers knew that a democracy was just a dictatorship by the majority. We stopped being a republic with the 17th amendment to the constitution. Now people in congress are not beholden to the people but to the organizations and corporations that fund their campaigns. That's why nothing ever change.
Hello were have the people been. 30 years to wake up. A parasite is a parasite. Dictator or kings, just suck the people into misery. I love the awakeing.
Although power is ostensibly organized under a multi-partysemi-presidential system, whereby the executive power is theoretically divided between the President and the Prime Minister, in practice it rests almost solely with the President who traditionally has been elected in single-candidate elections for more than fifty years. Egypt also holds regular multi-party parliamentary elections. The last presidential election, in which Mubarak won a fifth consecutive term, was held in September 2005.
In late February 2005, President Mubarak announced in a surprise television broadcast that he had ordered the reform of the country's presidential election law, paving the way for multi-candidate polls in the upcoming presidential election. For the first time since the 1952 movement, the Egyptian people had an apparent chance to elect a leader from a list of various candidates. The President said his initiative came "out of my full conviction of the need to consolidate efforts for more freedom and democracy."[41] However, the new law placed restrictions on the candidates, designed to prevent well-known politicians such as Ayman Nour from standing against Mubarak, and paved the road for his easy re-election victory.[42]
After the 2005 presidential elections observers alleged government interference in the election process through fraud and vote-rigging, and police brutality and violence by pro-Mubarak supporters against opposition demonstrators.[43] After the election, Mubarak imprisoned Ayman Nour, and the U.S. Government stated the "conviction of Mr. Nour, the runner-up in Egypt's 2005 presidential elections, calls into question Egypt's commitment to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law."[44]
Most Egyptians are skeptical about the process of democratization and the intent of the election rules. Less than 25 percent of the country's 32 million registered voters (out of a population of more than 72 million) turned out for the 2005 elections.[45]
Thirty-four constitutional changes voted on by parliament on March 19, 2007 prohibit parties from using religion as a basis for political activity; allow the drafting of a new anti-terrorism law to replace the emergency legislation in place since 1981, authorize broad police powers of arrest and surveillance; give the president power to dissolve parliament; and end judicial election monitoring.[46] Opposition members of parliament abstained from voting on the proposed changes. Only 27% of registered voters turned out under heavy police presence and tight political control. It was officially announced on March 27, 2007 that 75.9% of those who participated in the referendum approved the constitutional amendments. The results were endorsed by the rump parliament, thus allowing the introduction of laws that curb the activity of opposition elements, particularly Islamists.
The Egyptian military receives billions of dollars of aid from the United States. It remains Egypt's most powerful institution. It has dozens of factories manufacturing weapons as well as consumer goods, and it exempts itself from laws that apply to other sectors.[40]
President Mubarak is reportedly unlikely to stand for office when his present term expires in 2011. His likely successor is his son Gamal Mubarak and as the governing party's candidate, he is all but certain to ascend to power. The real struggle for power generally occurs behind the scenes since the NDP candidate all but certainly will become president. The Egyptian military could work behind the scenes to prevent Mubarak's succession.[40]
The CIA World Factbook states that the legal system is based on Islamic and civil law (particularly Napoleonic codes); and that judicial review takes place by a Supreme Court, which accepts compulsory ICJ jurisdiction only with reservations.[citation needed]
How do we get a Nobel Prize Winner to tell our leader to quit ?? Oh wait...our leader IS a Nobel Prize Winner....maybe he can tell himself to quit.
More so the Internet is a forum for people to post a lot of delusional ramblings.
Just what we need, MORE bleeding heart moslum pig dogs!
All it is doing is promoting mob violence. This is NOT the will of the people, it is hoodlums stirring up trouble for everybody. Jail the lot!!!
Did anyone else notice the picture with the story? Those guys are about to be in for some pain. It looks like a pinata party.
I found myself wondering why him being a prize winner had anything to do with the story.
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2005/
Rooster----you try to incite while offering no insight. I have no desire to collapse your banter--it does let me know the mindset of bigots.
Short video, you might want to share it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzQnBE3mYZg
Mubarak can also be very violent with whomever oppose him or stand in his way, it's about time to taste your own medicine, I wish he could just leave and give someone else a chance to make a difference.
Mubarak is just a human, he was giving a chance to rule as president, he has done his time already, it's been too long now!!! step down now, people are not stupid any more, what kind of Muslim are you? if you can’t share your office with someone else, how long do you want to stay as president? I bet you anything!! once Mubarak pass away his family will take over! that s even sick and that s not Muslim at all, you may just change your religion, you are embarrassing us.
theRooster-2101229, you are suspended for a day for violating # 5 of the Code of Honor.
Don't call everyone who practices a particular religion a pig dog, please. Thanks!
.

Things could get tough for the world's only super power.
MSNBC article:

Muslim Brotherhood is a bad news. Also the Saudi inspired extremist version of Salafi movement getting stronger is equally bad.
If they get control of Egypt, then it will be worse and Egypt will end up as another Iran ruled by mad mullahs!
this is the part i liked, and found not just amusing, but also a seemingly familiar tune.....
sound familiar? it isnt like these problems just sprang up. ongoing issues, without effort to fix, unemployment for starters. just keep raking it in off the people, getting fatter while they let their people starve.
Rooster, Please don't take this personal, but did your mother slam a car door on your head when you were a child?
Many years ago Iran wanted a change and they got one. How happy are the people of Iran now?????
Let's see....1978....riots in the streets of Tehran, the Shaw was kicked out and the good people of Iran got themselves a new leader so they all could be free and bask in the rewards of democracy.....NOT!!!!
Carla, that is true. Same thing in Iraq, you get the dictator out and see what you get. Same in Afghanistan after the soviets left, you get the Taliban. Look at Somalia, same old thing. You ceate a vacuum and the Islamic radicals hijack the movement.
Dictatorships always end up as corrupted and self serving to the very few...and misery to everyone else
When you have one group of people who don't use violence often and another that use violence as often as I use a toothbrush it's no wonder you always wind up with those using violence running things.
Terry:
We are not clean.
An end to the autocratic dictatorship, the new leadership will be Muslim brotherhood that was banned from voting because they will win. So Mubarak was the only candidate for president. However, a new ruling party will not help Egypt from this global recession
you make good points Raj, a lot of unrest comes from the citizens of US-controlled puppets.
Remember that Saddam was elected.
So when do we march on Washington?
DO we get to oust the president??? No, MOB violence is NOT the answer!!!!
Yes in the next election......
Hopefully we will not have "mob riots" and we will enact the changes with our votes.
But there are always those who will not want to wait, they will want to take and take violently because they feel "disenfranchised" and entitled to take.
There is also the criminal element who will use any excuse to go violent.
replytoj001
Don't forget to add GE to that mix.....power, massive government funding (bailouts), shipping jobs overseas, and (until recently) owner/influencer of media outlets.
GE is the Obama's administration's Halliburton.
replytoj001
replytoj001
Honestly....How can you, in your heart of hearts, actually believe that our current process of voting actually works? Two years ...four years...revolving politicians pulling the same scams on the people.
If the laws don't change today to fix our political situation, then we also will see demonstrations and mobs.
Imperial,
the answer is you can demonstrate and march any time you want.
Some customers at roadside stands might balk at giving a stranger their personal information just to buy a cucumber, especially when they can buy some from the grocery store without having to give up their name and address."
http://www.cornucopia.org/2010/07/produce-safety-bill-may-make-farmers-markets-a-thing-of-the-past/
He died January 4 from his injuries."
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/01/12/tunisia.protests/index.html
VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!!
Go take your medication, and turn off the CHE video....
the imperial
Oil of salami...
My good god what a scary ass you are. You carry a lot of water for people that say they want a social Utopia but really just want power. Yeah...Fox news is the culprit. what a complete delusional ass you are.
"Oil of Salami"? I believe you owe me, and Jon Anderson, an apology.
We have poverty of culture, values and leadership
I am sorry you are a meat head
How about tomorrow at 3:22 PM. Look for me I'll be the one in the red shirt.
*Sigh* people, The First Amendment of our Constitution:
Take the blinders off.
The D.C. think tanks learned a lesson from the 60-70's. When the defecation is about to hit the rotary-oscillator.... Drop back 5 yards and PUNT.
When they see the mass reaching a critical level, they release a few crumbs from the kings table.
Maybe the Mayans were right after all, THE WORLD WILL END IN 2012!!!
The only thing that is going to end for sure in 2012, is........ 2012!
Not true... January will end... February will end... Today will end...
THE WORLD WILL END!!!
(or something like that)
The earth will survive, as to mankind, well, time will tell...
johnnyt: Young fool.
You're all wrong.
Loo
I wonder if they eventually apply for asylum in the US...
no i said back to the amoeba stage. it will take them longer to regroup.
They are all muslim scum.
WOW!
I would like to see protesters without rioting. There is a big difference. Crowds can become unruly very quickly and then a lot of damage is done that later costs a lot to fix, or in deaths can't be fixed.
I think you are too close to the problem and are deluding yourself.
Yes, first hand knowledge is always the enemy of truth.
Viewed from 10,000 miles away, the truth about Egypt is easy for you to discern.
especially the truth about one group of people! All of these people are scum and all of that people are scum.
The only scum I see are the racists pointing fingers. I know people get all upset when you use the word racists, but when you apply generalizations to a group of people (all Muslims are scum) that's what you are.
As to the unrest occurring in Tunisia and Egypt, it is my hope that they lead to a more democratic government in both countries.
kurtnmia, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 5 of the Code of Honor.
Comming soon to an American city nere you
I hope so.......
No need for trickling, just a need for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
this article is about Egypt .not the U.S not Tunisia, not Obama .Doug Miller is right about radical Islamist terrorists.. similar to hamas hezbollah al quida or sometimes the same who are fueling the flames against good of a pluralistic society in Egypt with their Copt Christian society and for the good of Israel who has good realtions with Egypt just as Jordan does.. we can`t let Egypt fall to Isalmic terrorist groups who are waiting in the wing to take advantage of mob violence and chaos..the stakes are too high . what.all countries in the region should have done and still need to do .is recognize Israel just as most countries did when the Jews reclaimed theri homeland in 1948 ..instead they blab about "Zionist entity " in their genocidal Hitler type rants and the ayatoolahs in Iran also,, Egypt must preserve its integrity and not let the terrorists .whittle done the few positive influences change yes ..but not one inch to Islamic terrorists who are genocidal maniacs for both Jews and Christians in the area...I`m repeating myself but the point must be driven home.the hidden agenda which is not even hidden much anymore ..of Isalmic terroist groups in the mideast must be
Enough of this "we can't let" crap. WE CANT anymore!
Most of what Bart said is true, but there is not a damn thing we can do about it. Anything we support in this part of the world will be rejected because we are the "Great Satin" to them. We would be better off keeping our nose out of it. We sure has hell better not show support for the group we "really" want to prevail.
Egypt is too big to fail?
And I thought Egyptian cotton was better than satin, even if it is great.
Satan, Satin, whatever. Now we are counting off for spelling errors....LOL
Hahaha. FOOL.
Ken Giles
You ignorant piece of @!$%#.
I will be keeping Egypt's people in my thoughts as they find their way through these troubled times. I truly hope they find peace again soon.
someday soon we may have a muslim president. oops i forgot we already do.
dd141 this is about Egypt not about president Obama who is both a Christian and is fighting full force ahead against Isalmic terroism..just go away from here and stop polluting this article with idiotic chatter .go to the Obama bashing page if you want and sip your tea with he other fools and liars who deliberately say Obama is a Muslim to muck up the fact that he is getting more popular and some sore losers and sour grape people can`t handle it..!!
Amazing, but very sad.
i suggest wing girl get her little butt back to america.
She Loves the muslim scum so much let her stay. We don't need her here.
Every generation must over come its bigots I suppose. One would think that after even a cursory view of history, that it would be obvious that bigotry and protectionism fails. I suppose though it takes effort to take that cursory view.
to continue ..seen clearly and combatted with full force by organized governments who have an obligation to their citizens and the region and the world... and Egypt sees clearly this menace and will continue fight frontally hamas hezbollah iran and others who want to bring the devil of Isalmic police state sto the region and kill Christians and Jews..this is the nitty gritty. no mincing of words..I am neither Isreali oe a "Zionist" not that i have to say that but not one more inch and zero tolerance to Islamic terrroism . its a world problem ..!!..
we cant stop it here how are they gonna stop it over there, please dont say with our help
Bart Martin you are an idiot...thats all I have to say.....astounding ignorance!!
The SHAW of Iran?!? Hahahahahahahahaha!!
I voted you up by accident.
Comment # 19 deleted. Racist comment about Muslims, which led to many CoH violations.
Good suggestion King.
Daltex, let me add are the Muslim Brotherhood just a creation of the Mossad also, a fake boggeyman?
I haven't been to Egypt, although met quite a few good Egyptian soldiers, and lived tooo many years in Islamic Paradises!
Be careful what you wish for is all i will say.
Good post Carla. Life is a lot cushier for him in Vienna.
A little background info form Wikipedia:
Thanks. We know how the internet works.
