My uncles and cousins are all cops in large, dangerous, east coast cities. Each has been injured / shot during his career. They tell me it's due to the liberals "handcuffing" (no pun intended) them and not allowing them to profile potential suspects. They cannot do their job properly anymore. And the liberal, lamestrream media is constantly hounding the police instead of coming down hard on the vicious animals inhabiting our inner-cities.

Debi, I agree. Seems people are getting sick of the abusive cops. Cops tasing and killing 10 year olds and old ladies. Stomping on the throat of a handcuffed suspect, "accidentally" shooting somebody, falsifying arrest reports. The list goes on and on. I believe they are completely out of control and have a God complex. It's always funny when they forget to turn off the dash cam prior to beating the piss out of somebody and then denying it's them doing it. Funny in a sad kind of way.

In Miami, there are numerous cops that are making but NOT EARNING 100K+ annually with OT. No cop should be making that much with the crime rates as bad as they are in Miami. If you don't want a job that might get you shot, then don't become a cop!
Ironically, I had much more respect for authority in my youth than I do now as an adult. I've simply seen and heard too much to have much respect for any authority anymore.

Poor cops, facing danger every day; nobody told them to go the civil service route. They want the 20 and out with big benefits but there is a catch to the job; not everyone they meet is nice or weak or as the article lamented, scared of cops.
I'm stunned at the idiotcy of the posts on here. The police go out every day and risk their lives to protect the rest of us. Ninety-nine percent of police officers are good. Are there bad ones? I also agree with the posters ,,,A law enforcement officer , chooses that proffesion and there for must assume the risks that go with it .
I don't have much sympathy for civil servants, I think for the most part , they are taken care of by the public they signed on to serve

Here in New Orleans we've been dealing with a corrupt system for decades. Finally, the feds have taken over and now cops are on trial or have already been found guilty. Now that the cops know that there is no absolute power for them, I can tell they are a more cohesive honest unit. But it's going to take a very long time for the citizens of NOLA to trust their police force again.
I think what has gotten lost, on both sides, is that the police should be part of the community...not the dictator of the community. If you really think about it, police do very little "Prevention" of crime. Their role is reactionary. Well, you can't "Protect" if you can't "Prevent". This is where actually being part of the community vice holding dominion over it would be the ideal situation. It's the citizens of the neighborhoods that report suspicious activity and actually prevent crime. But if the citizenry is afraid of their own police force, they will never report the problems thus inviting crime to spread.
I also agree with the posts about the war on drugs. There should at least be some prioritization. Recently our city council passed a new law that basically said that anyone having less than an ounce of marijuana on them could be written a ticket and not arrested and it would be handled on the Municipal level. The idea, as they stated it, was so that police can stop wasting their time arresting and processing people for simple posession. In a year after the results are in, it will be very interesting to see how much more productive our police will have been with that monkey off their backs.
This is not to justify either side, but just some food for thought.
The big misnomer is the "term" Law Enforcement. We've all been acclimated into believing that Law Enforcement encompasses all levels of government. Nothing could be further from the truth. The only Constitutional Law Enforcement is the Sheriff, (who is elected), and his deputies. Highway patrol and peace officers are just hired guns. The motto for peace officers used to be, "To SERVE and PROTECT." Now, based on the fact that they have to do what the municipalities instruct them to do to generate revenue, they are nothing more that what was referred to in Roman times, (the first few hundred years AD/CE), as "Publicans," (aka - tax/tribute collectors).
You can also add to the mix the fact that it is NOT the militias, but rather the collective police departments that form the largest paramilitary organization in the US.... Just look at who has more "military type" weapons.

I feel like the police are taking the brunt for the politicians who continue to make law after law designed to generate revenue. No law should be designed for the sole purpose of generating revenue for a city or state, but that is exactly what so many of the laws we have in this country are intended to do. They hide behind the idea of public safety but at the root it's about revenue, revenue, and more revenue. Police are evaluated in job performance by the amount of revenue they earn.
Well....We have finally arrived at the time where the people are afraid of their government and the government is afraid of the people. How can any society expect to survive in such a state as this? The social fabric that that once held it together was the economy that depended on a cooperation between both labor and capital.
That unwritten social agreement was broken when the conservatives demanded deregulation of of business and finance, and ushered in their globalized economy. Instead of good paying jobs, our good patriotic Wall Street/Washington minions left us casinos and the lottery. So, we should leave them tared and feathered ASAP. (And the idiots who still believe in trickle down economics deserves it as well.)

I don't want to see anyone killed, and I am very sorry for the families of these officers, however, unless you are a homeowner, pay taxes that pay police salaries, don't count on fair treatment by the police, the supervision depts., the D.A.'s nor the courts. The poor are treated much differently.
The Police Depts. in FL, esp. the middle of FL , have the worst reputation for severe improper conduct. However, the higher officials investigating are almost always finding in favor of the bad cops doing their work in the line of duty even when a video says otherwise. The Police Chief had to resign early for falsifying college degrees for higher pay. He still collected his pension, but did not have to spend time in jail only because he resigned early. Any profession that wants respect must themselves behave accordingly. Even so, that does not give anyone the right to shoot or kill another individual. The police departments need to start taking more appropriate action and fire the few bad cops rather than keeping them on the job. Also, more psychological testing needs to be done on individuals before becoming an officer of the law. They should be the role model if they intend to uphold the law with the public.
Maybe if the police treated people with respect regardless of where they live, their race or sexuality (profiling), then they wouldn't have this problem. However, the police are just nothing more than legalized gangs allowed to abuse others.
They are just as corrupt and criminal as our government is today.
That's odd, I'm not terrified of cops at all. Actually, I'm thankful knowing that if my family calls them because they are in danger that they will show up and help protect them. I guess I'm just not breaking any laws and have no reason to fear them.

Getting past everyone's whining and back to the story - These incidents happened so closely together that it seems plausible to think there actually is a "War On Cops". Kind of reminds me of the movie "The Warriors" from sometime in the 70's (Oh am I showing my age!) where the gangs of New York City decided to band together against the police. If this is true, you can kiss America Goodbye!
Sure, there are good cops and bad cops. But, every single night on the news there is a story about another "excessive use of force" by a Seattle cop.
Even now, there is a Grand Jury trial of a cop, who gunned down a man in the street because he had his knife (he whittled wood) in his hand. The jury subsequently came to an agreement that the police officer "was not justified" in the shooting of this person.
Even though there are many more good cops than bad ones. The Bad ones who are brutal, and use excessive force, are the one's who get in the news. Police brutality needs to end, and this "internal investigations" need to be changed to 'external investigations'.
From 2 days ago: "A former senior Chicago police commander has been sentenced to 4.5 years prison for lying about police torture and abuse, the US Justice Department said...Burge, 63, had long been accused of torturing murder suspects -- virtually all African-Americans -- to obtain confessions during his long career that ended in 1993."
Another story of a cop killing an autistic man saying he had a knife, except the cop had planted it. And then you have the cops like Peterson in Chicago who killed his wives and other cops covered for him.
Until the police do a better job of policing their own, they don't deserve respect from the public.
Coming from someone whose mother has been a cop since she was four: I'm a very liberal leaning person, but I realize that cops have families and friends and just want to get their job done. My mother has had the legal ability to use her gun in many circumstances, but has done absolutely everything so that she has not had to use it in her 17 years of service. If people are angry that we're in a 'police state', they should try to change the law, not shoot people who have kids and spouses. I would be extremely heartbroken if my mom had to come home in a coffin.... She respects peoples' legal rights and has never broken the laws and procedures that bind her as an officer.
Ask those people that were at the G8 summit in Pittsburgh. I haven't found any video on it other than. Police state 4 on utube. And I never did see it in the main stream news.
And does she tell you stories about the bad cops she works with? Then does she tell you how she blew the whistle on corruption?
God bless these brave workers! Police and Fire Department risk their lives every day to protect and serve YOU! The work these dangerous jobs but each day they arrive at work, they wonder if they will go home to their families at the end of their shift. Now it seems that politicians want to strip them of their wages and retirement and if this happens it will cost YOU because no one will be there when you call for help AND your homeowners rates will skyrocket because of crime and poor fire ratings. Instead of bashing cops and emergency service workers, try supporting them! You may need their help one day!

Given how much American police of abused their fellow Americans, murdered their fellow Americans, ruined the lives of people they just didn't like, and abused their authority, is it at all surprising that they live paranoid lives in fear of retaliation?

Because It’s become a common occurrence in American daily life where any psycho, criminal or terrorist can get a weapon either legally or illegally because THEY HAVE THEIR RIGHTS! When they finally finnished, the people, Mayors, police and the criminals were so proud of what they had accomplished. There was love all around and they all felt so safe that they had a party together, but no dope, cause without the guns there was no dope anymore either. They partied and danced in the street for 3 days. They sang karaoke and Kum-ba-ya, ate cake, and drank wine together. It was so glorious what they did when they got rid of all the criminals guns. And the sun shone down that day and smiled on what a great job that they doe when they wrote the anti-gun laws. I meant to start this out with Once upon a time...

I'm sure every profession has its bad apples, but in my travels throughout the world I can honestly say that, in comparison, most of the police departments here comport themselves with professionalism and restraint. In many countries the police are untrained thugs managed by crime bosses and corrupt local governments. The END of the similarities between Fascism and Socialism comes when you say "They both let the government have all of the power.". That's it. The long and short of it. Fascism didn't punish those that worked outside of their means. They could care less if you got rich. As long as you followed the Nationalist party line, they could care less what you did. Communism/Socialism however sets everything into law. Who can do what jobs. How much everyone makes at those jobs. What possessions people have. Everyone is equal. Spread the wealth. I have had good and bad experiences with police but I know that they are the ones who I look to when things are out of my control and when I raise my children I have always taught them to view the police as the "good Guys" and not make them fear the police by saying "that big scary policeman will take you away if you dont behave" (maybe thats where it started for you bashers)

Also, I might add, why are the bad police allowed to remain on the job when there have been repeat incidents written on their records for inappropriate behavior??? It may not be a problem where you live, but there are some areas (please note that I said, "SOME" which does not mean "ALL") where there has been too much of this misconduct occurring (take for example New Orleans). In my State alone, there is not a week that goes by where the TV News does not have a report on police misconduct such as: physical abuse, sexual misconduct, soliciting sex from prostitutes, theft from the police funds, false frame-ups, false degrees, pedophile, murder, spousal abuse, back up the misconduct of others, etc., etc. etc. Finally, let me say so that you understand very clearly, that does not mean "ALL" the police act with bad conduct in those areas. But the bad ones should be fired without compensation, just as it would be true in any other job. When a Police Chief has been found guilty by special investigators and police hearings for falsifying records to obtain a much higher salary, then he should be fired, pay back all the money with interest, spend time in jail, and never allowed to receive a pension just because he retired early from the job as a deal for not going to a court trial. And that is exactly how it works in the military (at least it did for the well more than 20 plus years of our service). One more thing, over weight personnel in the military among "ALL" ranks either loose the weight, remain physically fit on the tracks within a given time or required number of repetitions; or they receive no promotion, and are forced out of service for medical reasons. The same standards should be held for physically fit police officers. The Police Chief mentioned earlier had to be WELL MORE THAN A 100 POUNDS OVER WEIGHT to the point that he had no chin, no neck, and no waist. That is not an isolated incident among police personnel, either (but that "DOES NOT" include "ALL" of them). Both the males and females police officers need to maintain an effective body weight for endurance demanded in their often critical environments. My regrets to the families of the murdered police officers.

Since when are people supposed to be afraid of cops? Maybe if the police were taught that there is a difference between ruling by fear/intimidation and maintaining law and order through respect.

Bottom line, if you ever need the cops they are 5-105 minutes from showing up and unless you pretty much have the case wrapped up when they get there they probably won't do jack about it.
Every time I've had property damaged or been threatened cops are nowhere to be found and even if you give them plate numbers, etc that match up they are too gutless to do anything. Unless there is a millionaire making the call they could care less and just go through the motions.
How many times are these reports of convictions? The news will report any accusation, often with only the "victim's" word as evidence. I've seen it happen. The news organizations are nowhere to be found, though, when the judge dismisses the case because it's a total lie. At best the decision rates a tiny article on p. 5 of the paper.
Add to that the fact that the accused officer is often prohibited from commenting because either the accusation is related to an active case, in which public comment would violate the privacy rights of the "victim," or it's part of an ongoing lawsuit, and the department won't allow comment.

I can only speak to cases I know about personally (as, I would hope, could you). In one case, a woman accused an officer of "throwing her across a room" when he and two others came to arrest her son. I can vouch for the fact that nothing of the sort ever happened--and members of her own family admitted as much. BUT...when she made the official accusation, the local newspaper carried the story on the front page. There were outraged letters to the editor for several weeks. And the officer COULD NOT COMMENT. When the judge finally dismissed the case and gave the woman a serious talking-to, the local paper put one line, saying only that the case was dismissed, in a story about something else in the police agency. ("In other police news...")

really?: This came from the Chief of Police: A few weeks ago in Long Beach, CA, a 35 year old man was gunned down by two police officers (2 shotgun blasts and 4-6 handgun shots) because they NEVER announced themselves and he was sitting on a porch playing with a hose nozzle, they thought he had a gun. He never even knew anyone was watching him.
Where will the justice be for this man and his child? The two officers involved will likely get a slap on the wrist (time off) and it'll end with an "Oops, sorry about that". These officers lack good judgment and need to be removed and prohibited from carrying a weapon.
There was also a case recently in Oakland, CA where the policeman received a very light sentence for killing a handcuffed man. He claims he thought he was shooting him in the back with his taser gun and not the real gun. If he can't tell the difference, it's concerning, because this is the caliber of people being hired by the police departments.
Police departments really need to take a good hard look at themselves. It's no longer just the criminals claiming police brutality.

Exactly! I'm not at all saying that the cops that were shot brought it on themselves. What I am saying is that just because they are the police doesn't guarantee that they should be respected. You have to earn respect!!
I see cop shows like Law & Order, where the cops may be a little less "PC" than cops 30 years ago, but in the end, they got their perps behind bars and fought the good fight against crime. In the real world, however, men and women join the force so most of them can legally bully common citizens, all the while generating revenue for the municipalities they serve. All too often, they put way too much emphasis on harassing people who go 5 mph over the posted speed limit, or who are intoxicated in public, or who are caught with 3 joints in their pocket. Yet, where are these fine men and women in blue when I am assaulted and robbed at gunpoint at my ATM? Where are they when my little girl is being raped and beat to a pulp?? Nowhere to be seen, that's where they are!! And, of course, when one cop does something morally and legally wrong, their fellow cops are always there to help out with the cover-up!
You want to be respected again as a fraternity of law-enforcement officers, protecting and serving the people in their community? You want society at large to help you catch criminals and deter crime? You can start by going after the real criminals and you can start by allowing common citizens to protect themselves by whatever means necessary against violent crime (without fear of being locked up ourselves)! Show us you are looking out for our best interest....go after the rapists, the murderers, the child molesters with as much zeal as you seem to go after old ladies who drive a little too fast on the street or some dude enjoying some weed in his own house!!

That said, I agree that police officers have created some of their own mess - over and over again there's been rampant corruption, crime and wrong doing on the police officers side, and far too often they get a slap on the wrist, or cover for each other and believe themselves to be above the law, in the case of police officers refusing to submit to drug testing - or the fact that we cannot videotape our encounters with police officers. We should have the right to capture how a police officer is treating us on camera...surely they area aware of the law and can abide by it with camera's rolling, right?
Sadly, when they fight common sense stuff like that, it solidifies in our minds that cops arent any better than the criminals they are fighting - just a different breed of dirty.
Sure, there are some good cops out there...but they are swallowed alive by the dirty ones, and have no ability to stand up for all good cops and fight the bad ones. its a brotherhood, and the corrupt will be protected and the good ones will be ran off the job.

This si true i live in poughkeepsie N.Y. and cops here abuse their power especially the night shift, i almost got into a coalition with a cop because he didn't have hes sirens on, and was chasing some one to give him a ticket outside of hes jurisdiction. Ive also seen cops put theirs lights on to go to Macdonald's do 80 on the highway, and do a U turn on red to get to dunking donuts. When you start doing this, giving 5 tickets out at a time, giving service men tickets, and having more than 2 cops at a traffic stop people start losing respect for you. Its so bad over here i can't sit in a well lit up public parking lot with out getting 21 question. On their patrol cars it says to protect, and serve, i'm starting to think it should be changed to harass, and, destroy. Destroy that cop - civilian relationship that cops used to have.

It seems to me becoming a mis-tempered bully is largely a side-effect of the job. They sign up for a job who's clientele is, by definition, criminals. Apart from traffic cops, most spend a great deal of time putting their life in danger and don't spend most of their time dealing with reasonable, friendly citizens. You can see why this could mess with their head. I agree that this is a job that attracts those interested in power, and many abuse it, just like other similar career fields. However, I live in a low-crime city of a hundred thousand, and every cop I've encountered has been friendly and reasonable. In my opinion, a lot of it is location, location, location.
The government SHOULD fear the people...... and while the loss of ANY life is saddening, it IS time to Right the Ship. In 100 years we (WE) have created a mess of what this GREAT Country once stood for. It is time to take back what the Founding Fathers put forth, namely

But, if I'm going through a yellow light with a guy just inches behind me, practically pushing me through so he could get through himself, guess who's giving ME a ticket for running a stoplight?? If we are to live in a civilized society, EVERYONE is expected to abide by our laws, including the police. For those who break the law, they should be held accountable. But it's not the job of the police to behave as judge and jury. That's where many times they cross the line.
Every time I needed a cop I was told that they couldn't do anything about it! Growing up in the city, as teenagers we where shaken down by these thugs they call police. What would amount to armed robbery if I did it, and it was a regular thing and not by the same ones either. And they treat everyone as a criminal. They are suppose to be public servants, but they act like you work for them.
The police have way too much power, and they DO abuse it too often. In Philadelphia and Camden alone the cops have declared open season on the citizens. They strut around with arrogance, act nasty when asked for help and are more concerned with their pensions and unions than in doing a good job.
Both departments are a disgrace. As for me, I do not trust the cops, believe they are as bad as the criminals the arrest, and are known to fabricate evidence to boost their arrest records. As Mick Jagger said in "Sympathy For the Devil" Every cop is a criminal. So true. They have earned every bit of disrespect they get.

The US has hired and created a "military background" type of police who have a confrontational, can do no wrong, do as I say, type of presence. There is most definitely a "us" versus "them" type of attitude with law enforcement, rather than a "may I assist and protect" type of presentation.
Perhaps the cops should examine from within, how they are viewed in a community by the populace they are supposedly "protecting"!
Cops won't be happy until everybody is arrested and in the system. My buddy once got pulled over and immediately the cop said he smelled alcohol. Funny thing is, my buddy had pancreatitis due to excessive drinking. He hadn't had a drop of alcohol in five years at the time, but damn, that cop had such a good sniffer he still smelled it on him.

How come they don't pursue killers of non-law enforcement with the same vigor? Where are the good cops when their bad brothers behave poorly? Why do cops shoot the family pet when there is no criminal to chase? Why did the Detroit cops not apologize to the man whose 7 year old daughter was killed by the invasion of the wrong home? Why did the man in the NY subway deserve to get sodomized with a club for a joint in his pocket? Why do cops generally enjoy the reality show 'Cops' that glorifies police brutality?

Geoffreyf, either you are a cop, the kid of a cop or just delusional. I was raised respecting police officers. I always trusted they were there for the people's best interests and were worthy of the public trust they were given. I grew up in a suburb just outside of Boston.
I went to college in Lowell Ma, living in the Dorms. I moved into the Lowell community upon graduation & marraige and still retained my respect for law officers.
I am an adult now ... I have relatives who are "staties" ... I now know better than believe that the cops are there for the public. It is an ego thingy ... they have the authority and screw anyone else. What they say goes whether it is the truth or not. They are a bunch of paper pushers who are collecting a paycheck and hoping for a great pension while chasing kids and little old ladies for speeding tickets, cell phone violations or pot while making they dont get in the way of any murderers or thieves.
I have had police be rude, insulting and threatening for no other reason that "their statement" was challenged. Thank God after my son had a horrible accident and was almost killed, the judge that heard our challenge LISTENED. Given the physics of the damages and the pictures showing the damages, the police officer's report was THROWN OUT. After my son almost got killed by a middle aged drunk with a sports car, the assh0le tried blaming my son saying he cut the assh0le off. My son's car: whole driver front side was smashed in, totalled, rammed into a guardrail ... my son was lucky to be alive ... the drunk said my son cut him off, yet the physical damage to the vehicles and the physics of the accident itself (the trajectory of the cars due to the impact). The middle aged assh0le: he had some damage to his passenger side rear end. The police also left my son ON THE HIGHWAY after his car was towed away. My son walked to the exit ramp and off the highway to call home. Good old Mass Staties at work. It took a year for this to be rectified. His insurance was re-adjusted to remove the "increase" in his premiums, however the assh0le got off with NOTHING. The insurance said it was too late to make claims for damages on his totaled car. He received NOTHING even though he wasnt at fault for the accident, but within weeks of the accident the middle aged jerk had his "check in the mail" for damages thanks to an idiot cop.
The Lowell police seem ok ... nothing grand, nothing outstanding ... but nothing I have heard to either trust or distrust them. Police in the suburbs of the Greater Lowell area are on one hell of an ego trip. They use their badge like it makes them God. I would trust a Lowell cop long before one from the Lowell suburbs. I have seen cops lie and not blink an eye. I have seen them harrass and bully people with no accountability. They, for the most part, have evolved into the very entities they are supposed to protect the public from.
When police feel no qualms about lying to discredit an honest citizen who appeals through the legal system their actions, when they feel they can "throw their weight around" with no accountability and when they see themselves as "we against them" when comparing themselves to the general public, we have a problem ... it is a gang problem. Gangs use the "we against them" and the "brotherhood, no matter what lies are needed to protect it" ... that has NO place in a police force that protects the public IT IS A PART OF.
It is one thing having to deal with a gang of out of control kids ... a whole different problem when that gang is composed of armed and dangerous adults that the public EMPLOYS and arms them for the function of maintaining order - NOT DESTROYING IT.

This is where the cops do themselves a disservice. Constantly referring to those outside of law enforcement as civilians like they are some protected class of super citizens feeds the resentment of many. The cops are CIVILIANS as they are not in the armed forces.
There are some reasons for an 'us versus them' attitude many police agencies have, but they need to see that it rubs people the wrong way and can contribute to the lowering of respect for police officers. If you include federal law enforcement types like the ATF who have fabricated evidence, police officers tasering old ladies and other people that are little physical threat to the officer(s) it only ratchets up the percetion that police officers are unfair and brutish.

Very well aware that there are other jobs where people are killed at work but not as common as being a cop. Apparently you have never watched the news when they are chasing criminals other than cop killers. Remember the O J Simpson chase years ago? Remember the sniper killers in DC? It's been my experience that the cops make up laws at the moment of harassment/arrest and falsify the reports to make it as though their poop doesn't stink. If they enforce the laws, how come I have seen many cops come screaming around a corner with lights and siren on just to slam the brakes to hook it into a Dunkin Donuts? Why have I seen many a cop flip the lights on just to get through a red light? Care to explain how that is enforcing the laws that are on the books? I've run into my share of good cops and bad ones. Law enforcement is in the family from police (3 uncles and a cousin) through to the Feds. Anyone who has an attitude towards police in general is likely prejudiced. Those who've been pushed around by bad cops may not see justice immediately, but likely have not thoroughly looked into an effective method of resolving the issue. And yes, I am well aware in the most despicable situations, it can be a long time coming. But even in the worst circumstance, your voice needs to be raised about it.
Having said that, like ANY job, I find 98% of good cops are given a bad name by the other 2%. It is only common sense, however, to feel the threat of authority with a gun. That doesn't mean, however, the answer is to pull your own gun and get yourself buried. Especially since law enforcement is here to stay because it is still, fundamentally, a service the public wants in general. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, well, probably not thinking at all.
I feel sorry for these police if the stories are to be believed. Certainly it looks like the officers so far have all just been trying to do their jobs. Controversy doesn't seem to be involved, well, maybe except that again some fringer wants to raise. Best wishes to those they left behind.

I was commenting on the people who blame cops for arresting speeders and potheads instead of "real criminals." According to the law, speeders and potheads ARE committing crimes, and cops don't get to write the laws. If you don't like the laws, tell your elected representatives.
As for your comment, cops CAN'T "make up laws" when they arrest you. If they do, the magistrate/judge will turn them in to their superiors. They must have a valid reason to arrest you; you must at least be accused of breaking a law that's on the books. (It's up to the courts to decide whether you're actually guilty.)
And do you KNOW that the cops who turn on their lights and sirens to go through red lights aren't on their way to a call? Do you really KNOW anything about what they're doing, except that you hate cops?

If I was in a dangerous situation I will certainly put more trust in my desire and ability to properly handle it than I would in some cop; any cop. I think it's sad when we are supposed to support useless vermin and depend on them making decisions that affect our lives instead of being able to take actions to defend our selves. Cops are just another form of societal predator, ticketing us to finance their paychecks and benefits but being truly useless when someone actually entrusts a problem to them.
A list of known corrupt and useless law enforcement agencies (through personal experience)...Nassau County (NY), especially the Fifth Precinct, Phoenix, AZ, Arizona Department of "Public Safety", Darlington County (SC) Sheriff's Department (Yes Taylor Lail, I'm calling you corrupt and absolutely useless).
It was not that way 45 years ago; I remember having great respect for the police as a youth; it was not until my adult years that I saw what dirt bags were filling the jobs.

As for the 'cop hater' comment above, no one on here has said they hated cops. No one likes an authority figure that abuses power and breaks the same laws that he/she charges us and our friends with. There are many good POLICE men and women. 'Cops' has become a dirty word that describes law enforcement officials that turn a blind eye to their buddy's corruption and crimes, but will take the law book and nit-pick every little piddly crime to charge a person with (one violation=6 charges). Most is motivated by revenue for the department or to justify the new equipment they just bought or the Lexus the chief just got or the pay raises the department has asked for.
Why don't the cops hang out at the places where crime happens? How come they poke around where they can harass a lot of easy targets? Is it because the easy targets don't shoot back? People are tired of getting picked on by the folks that are paid to protect us from the bad guys.
How about focusing LE efforts on VIOLENT crimes instead of the victim-less and non-violent ones? Why are there so many rape kits not processed? How come women cannot feel safe walking the streets at night? How come children are still being abducted by family members who have been reported repeatedly and told nothing can be done? How come I get the attention of a cop quicker for an expired tag or sticker than when I call to report a hard crime like an assault or a theft?
I have the greatest respect for ALL public servants that do what they are paid to do, but I detest those that take advantage of others just because they have a 'title'. Cops are not the only ones that abuse power and authority. To say that police work is the hardest job in the world is just absurd. Everyone thinks their job is the hardest.

Then the newer generations became as you so succinctly put it, "douchebags". I remember when police officers were honest, community minded professionals. They WALKED the neighborhood. They gave people the benefit of the doubt and earned their trust. They were tough on the bad but looked up to by everyone else. I remember the names of the officers I knew as I reached my teens. Some helped me out when I got myself into a bit here and there. However, the police officers began to retire when I was about 15 and the pigs began to take over. They were bullies and punks. It seems that it is a nationwide problem with bad cops. There are still some good cops but in many places they are outnumbered by the garbage.
Incidentally, about 30 years ago I took the test for the NYPD. I ended up ranked 54 out of over 48,000 candidates. On the eve of going into the academy I called my recruiter up and told him I had changed my mind; I did not feel like I had the temperament to be a cop. I felt I had too much of a chance of becoming one of the scumbags I had come to dislike. Oddly, three cops from that graduating class died in the line of duty within the first 4 years. One was a personal friend who served as a volunteer fire fighter with me. I don't need to be a cop to help people; I help people every day. I have helped police officers out several times in NYC and Phoenix. I don't support the killing of police officers, for the most part. However, I for one think we could live quite rationally with less levels of "law enforcement". I think for the most part, private police departments like San Francisco used to have are a better way to go, if you think you really need police. I put more trust in myself to take care of my family's needs.

As for a war on cops, well, I'm not surprised. Over the years the police I have had to deal with have been pretty damn rude and unhelpful. From NYC where I grew up to the small town in the midwest where I now live, seems like the arrogance is the same with all of them.
Years ago I was stalked by a truly off the wall guy who would threaten to call and threaten to cut me up if I wouldn't go out with him. He would show up on my back porch in the middle of the night and bang on the window. All kinds of truly scary stuff, but over and over the police told me they couldn't do anything unless the creep touched me or broke in. They wouldn't even speak to the this guy. Finally had to move.
So when do I see cops? This summer while mowing our lawn a police officer pulled into to our drive and harrased me and my husband about the clipping that had gone off the curb into the gutter. Mind you we were still outside using the grass pick up attachment and it was obviouse to anyone BUT the officer that it would be finished up neatly. What this officer had nothing better to do?
Believe me I see the police too often for all sorts of stupid reasons, from my daughters car was parked in our driveway about 6 inches over the sidewalk, to the neighbors complaining (again) about my hens (which are legally owned and kept). Come on already I am a middle aged suburban housewife, why bother with me?!

"Abortion" is not once mentioned or even alluded to in the US Constitution or the Amendments thereto. There is also (contrary to popular opinion) absolutely NO "right of privacy" enunciated in either document (that right, to the extent it exists, was created by Justice William Douglas, in the early 1960's, as a "penumbral" or inferred right). Yet ANY attempt to impose even "reasonable" restrictions on abortions is met by the liberal element of the population with outrage and extremist rhetoric.
This same liberal element, however, seemingly feels that the express right to "keep and bear arms" is mere surplusage, it doesn't count, and zealous defense of that right, despite its express guarantee in the Constitution, is deemed to be "irrational".
I suppose consistency would be too much to hope for.
30,000 firearms deaths per year? 1.5 million in the last 50 years? Where do people come up with these figures? According to the FBI Crime stats (available on the web for anyone who cares to look) , there were 13,636 homicides in 2009--and this includes all the beatings stabbings poisonings and sundry other ways people have of killing each other. And violent crime fell in 2010! Let's do comparisons. 40,000= killed every year in vehicle accidents, hundreds of thousands more injured. 100,000 a year in reported deaths due to medical negligence. Should we outlaw cars and doctors?
The second amendment is more than just the guarantor of our rights, it also serves as a trip wire.

I'm not an advocate of repealing the second amendment but being realistic our forefathers that framed the Constitution, as good as they were, could never envisioned hand guns that could shoot a hundred rounds of ammo in a split second. The guns of those days were single shot muzzle loaders that help a man protect his family and himself from harm. With these new "war weapons" that criminals can get their hands on, there needs to be a mandatory death penalty for anyone shooting a law enforcement officer under any conditions other than self defense. Banning guns is not going to solve anything now because the weapons can be bought just about anywhere but a mandatory death penalty could stop them from killing again.
Now the gunman that shot the people in Arizona is all ready to enter a plea of insanity. To that I say BS because every murder is committed by an insane person since a sane person doesn't carry a gun with the intent to kill someone outside of self defense. He was not defending himself. The whole point of the 2nd Amendment is to put into the hands of the people (which is all "the militia" is - and yes, if you want to discuss it, we can go back to its basis in the ancient, Anglo-Saxon "fyrd", so spare me the objection) sufficient weaponry to oppose an oppressive government. NOW, when the government had smoothbore flintlock muskets, then flintlock muskets were fine for the people. When the government got repeating rifles, then the people needed something similar. Yet here we are, in the 21st C, faced by a government armed with thermonuclear weapons, ultra-sonic jet fighters carrying cluster bombs and precision guided munitions, along with armored vehicles of daunting capacities, and YOU want to argue that guns with detachable magazines (a technology developed in the 1800's, btw) are "too much" for private individuals to own? Talk to me when I get my own nuclear stockpile, because, for the first time in our history, the 2nd Amendment actually falls far short of its purpose. It needs expanded, not further restricted, if it is to meet the expectations of the Founders.
The 2nd Amendment is NOT about my right to hunt squirrels with the right to own anything more capable than a single shot .22 being "negotiable". It's about my right to go toe-to-toe with government forces and, until I at least get a fully loaded Apache helicopter, I'm on the short end of the stick.

The DOJ Bureau of Justice and the CDC, which tracks all causes of death, have carefully analyzed the homicide data for recent years and came up with some very interesting results. Yes, there are about 12,000-13,000 homicides each year involving the use of weapons. About 8000 of them involved hand guns. But, interestingly enough, about 75% of these shootings involved men in a 14-24 year old age bracket who had criminal records and who were either directly or indirectly involved in illicit drug trafficking, and who were killing each other! In some of the larger US cities, this percentage runs up to nearly 90%. Yes, that means there are still other crazies who kill innocent people, but the percentage is rather small against the overall chaos promoted by the drug trade. Personally, I believe these people are more than welcome to kill each other.
And while we're looking at statistics, we kill about 40,000 people each year and injure another 2,700,000 or so severely enough that they need either medical treatment or hospitalization due to automobile accidents and driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. Looking at the logic of many of the above posts, does that mean we should ban cars and alcohol too in a futile effort to protect mankind against it self? No, it is impossible to legislate the hazards out of life despite all those hand wringing liberals trying to do so!

Exactly, it's not newsworthy, whats newsworthy is all the recent instances of drug raids on the wrong houses, families being assaulted and pulled from their beds for something they had no part in all because some cop wrote down the wrong address on his report. Police using their cruisers for sex or using the laptop for porn while on duty. I'm not saying THESE particular officers deserved to DIE, but they might have needed a little jail time and now that they're "fallen brothers" nobody will bother to tarnish their reputations by trying to find out, they're just going to search for the culprit with a vengeance and take retribution. where's the justice in that?
There is no "war on cops" but there is a service known as police with military type weapons and body armor that are trained in the military mentality of "friend or foe" and guess what people, their focus is the main population, we're the "foe".

I expected that to happen; I expect things to get worse. You see, I have already put the local Barney Fifes on notice that I am filing a USC 42 Section 1983 lawsuit against them for violating my civil rights. They did something very bad that negatively affected my entire family. This was not an easy decision to make but a certain deputy sheriff (the one I named in yesterday's post) went way across the line to get me. This was a culmination of 2 years of unwarranted harassment by the same cop.

I'm sure that you really believe that, anyways. You can't sue a police municipality for turning around in your driveway. If you had any real balls, you'd walk out and ask them to either use someone else's driveway or the street if it bothered you that badly, but you don't, and you won't. I've done it where I live when they used my driveway to clock speeders. I very politely asked them to either use the road or some other piece of land, and the officer apologized and left. I haven't been pulled over after, or harassed. As a matter of fact, that same police officer stops to talk and check in about the goings on in the neighborhood now because he knows I pay attention. But you go ahead and grab those nails and crawl up on your man made "persecution" cross and nail yourself to it. It makes you look paranoid and crazy.

Actually, it's next to impossible to get a job on any police force unless you have connections. I have a friend with excellent qualifications (college degree, long duration of military service, reservist, and just a generally good guy) that has been trying for a while now.

Actually, considering they risk their lives everyday to keep you safe, that's terrible. Higher then soldiers, sadly, but still terrible. My father retired from a job working as an auditor for the IRS and pulls in 75k a year in pensions and retirement. So basically, he makes 50% more then a cop for sitting behind a desk and doing math. Seems skewed.
162 cops died on the job last year. 819 farm workers died on the job last year. In other words, the person who rendered the lard to fry the donuts was 5 times more likely to die on the job than the pig who stuffs his fat bully face with them. And neither has a really dangerous job such as logger, commercial fisherman, or high iron worker.
A cop in my home city of Louisville pulled a gun on a McDonalds worker because his salad was nasty. Another cop in Louisville ticketed a 4 year old who hit his car with a ball. Another shot and killed a man who had his hands handcuffed behind his back but who apparently was going after the cops with a knife? The war on cops might just be retaliation for the war on the people. Attention All Cops: You are not above the law and you are not better than everyone else!
Granted, some cops are pieces of @!$%#... but its probably the good ones that end up paying for the BS the @!$%#ty ones dish out to the public... not that I condone violence against any of them, I don't.

Travis - Still that does not justify murder. There are bad police officers, just like there are bad civilians. The remedy should be the same... through the law, not murder.
I live in the Philadelphia, PA area and the police officers that i have encountered have in almost all cases brought honor to their profession. I think as a society we have this overwhelming desire to dwell on negative things and not give credit where credit is due.
That being said i seriously question the logic of the officer who brought the guy (who held me up at gunpoint when i was 13) in a squad car right in front of my house so i can identify him. The guy knew where i lived after that.
But other than that... and even for that... the officers do not deserve death.

Not all policemen are bad thats not a fair statement. Yes their are some who should not be allowed to carry that badge but dont let one bad cop be the one you look at as an "inspiration". My husband is a policemen and he is an honest man and loves what he does. He has been on the force 3 years and has only had to use foce one time (taser). He ran a toy drive for 5 familys in the poor comunity he works in. And buys clothes for the homeless also. So its not fair for you to spew such negative comments. If you want to make a change to the police departments JOIN!! Maybe you can make a diffrence. Instead of incouraging people to hate cops even more like their job is not hard enough. What I find ridiculous is that Louisville Metro PD officers also have customized civilian license plates on their personal vehicles that state they are members of "The Fraternal Order of Police". If police officers want to act like elite members of a fraternal organization rather than public servants paid for by public funds, then they should expect a little resentment from the public.

I was arrested in Paseneda Texas for "illegal lane change and failure to change address on my license (i was moving that weekend and informed the officer of that) The bottom line is that the "cop' was a young "Gang Task Force" member with a black t shirt and a gun belt, when he walked up to my car I said "everytime I come thru this damn town I get pulled over". with that I was yamked out of the car, my hands on the trunk, the "officer' walked behind me and "dared me" to "say that again" which being a tax paying true blue American I did, with that I was arrested and booked. it cost me $600 to get out of jail and another $200 to get my car out of impound. I served my country in Desert Storm, I pay my taxes, i believe in the constitution but where did all those right get me? In jail like all the other 'criminals" I thought I could explain things to the "Judge" and he would chew out the officer and let me go. Guess what? He laughed and ask me if i had the money to pay the fines, when I said "not on me" I was sent back to jail as the Judge chuckeld about it. at one point i told the arresting officer "this is America i have a consitutionlly garanteed right to freedom of speach" he informed me "Not in Pasedena you don't boy!".......
I used to be just like most of you, I believed 100% in Amercia and police officers. I have seen with my own eyes officers lie on the witness stand, officers haras and follow pretty young ladies and even an officer on video shoot an unarmed hand cuffed man! So.......... before the majority of you call for travis's head you should stop and put yourself in some other folkjs shoes for just a minute. Police are humans just like the rest of us and they are subject to the same failings as the rest of us.

A couple years back a city cop killed 2 kids, drunk in a car, went to his OWN STATION and was stashed for 8 hours until he sobered up. wound up getting off and is still a cop! as I said, the list goes on and on. Maybe some of the less stable in the country are getting a belly full on this above the law attitude they flaunt.

Being a city kid, (boston). I've dealt with a lot of messed up cops. There are some cool ones but it seems to be few and far between state or local. The number of people who wear the badge because of a burning desire to be a do gooder is far outweighed by the number of bullies who crave an authoratitive position. I can see the us vs them attitude in my community, my first reaction to this article was oh well. HOWEVER calling it a conspiracy is just a plea for more government cash and calling for more gun control is just as useless as throwing money at the problem. The world is full of crazys. In all my years the only people I've ever heard say this kind of thing were criminals or ignorant people who don't understand law. The police only try to uphold the laws WE agree to. I was driving down highway 59 in Texas, some dude passes me in the shoulder then comes over in front of me and slams on his brakes. Just so happened an 18 wheeler was directly behind me and he started talking about it in the radio. Over the next hill was a Texas State Trooper and they were on the crazy driver quickly (great story up until now right?) Here is where they lost my support, we were in court, I was testifying against the "road rage guy" and the Prosecution called in the State troopers for witness testimony and guess what. The cop that testified was not the cop I saw that night on the road side (there were two and he was neither) That cop sat on the stand and lied, plain and simple lied! I was wrong for not saying anything at the time but I wanted the crazy driver convicted. However I did learn something very important - the cops will lie, lie, lie to get what they want, I have seen it with my own eyes I ell you. Up until this point I was true blue American, black folks must have lied about what cops do to them, cops don't murder people and all cops are good. I am sorry your eyes have not been opened as mine have been, I am sorry to black people for doubting what you were saying for all those years and I am sorry to ALL the truly good cops out there but this story IS the truth and nothing but the truth so help me God! Yet you fail to address the ease of obtaining one. In many states, a face to face transaction requires ZERO background check. Sales at yard sales are not uncommon. As pointed out, the recent AZ shooting was done by someone who was absolutely legal to own that firearm. And private possession and the ability to carry did nothing. Scalzo, there are background checks in all states. There is an instant background check in some states, in others, there is a waiting period. The same people that provided Loughner with his dope could have as easily provided him with a gun. Guns purchased illegally on the street are cheaper than those in gun stores. A Glock there can be purchased for $200.
You know, my point is that we constantly hear people talking across each other about theory when it comes to gun control. What I don't ever see is hard truth.
The NRA says we have enough laws, and they aren't enforced well, or properly. The anti-gun folks say we need more laws. If everyone who commits a crime owns a their gun legally, I would say the laws are not strong enough. If the folks who commit the crimes own the guns illegally, then the laws that exist are not being enforced correctly. I understand that this is not an either/or situation, but I am sure the ratio that results from the answer to my question would make a rational starting place to make the necessary changes in laws or their enforcement.
I realize this would give the media leess to sell us, and the NRA less to profit upon by making the media the enemy, but it might actually save some innocent lives in the future. Something that doesn't show up in either side's income sheet.

Agreed. There have been studies on economic disparity that suggest there is at least correlation between that and amount of crime. America has, I think, the largest economic disparity in the West, and we do have the largest prison population. Unfortunately, it is those who try to enforce the laws that get in the way. We really do need to address poverty, and the best way may be by taking from the rich. Unfortunately, the rich just had their tax cuts extended for two more years, so we should expect crime and cop killings to keep increasing.
As things keep going downhill, the police will have to change their ROE to protect themselves. Expect more police shootings with less provocation. These shootings will be justified by the new situation they face. Controlling a population that is more and more disconnected for civilization requires more direct force. When the situation gets worse, just remember: we brought it on ourselves.
Do you think maybe, just maybe, the fact that we keep making it easier and easier for people to GET guns and carry them (states are now allowing people to carry guns in bars, the federal gov is going to allow people to carry loaded guns in national parks, etc) is contributing to an attitude of disregard for law enforcement. I understand where you're coming from, however, realize that GOOD citizens, no matter what their condition, are not the ones who kill police. However, I do agree, take away an individual's education, job, housing, food and family, and desperation can often drive people over the edge. Furthermore, Reagan wasn't talking about civil servants, like cops or firefighters, he was talking about those on the political scene who control laws and policies which are meant to boost and help people from a social angle, but really turn out to be a waste of tax payer money. Sounds like you may actually fit in the profile of some of these murderers since you are simpathetic to their vicious crimes. Back on the day of the incident, immediately after Abbate left, a friend of his came in the bar and offered money to Obrycka if she would not prosecute. Police just might "find" some drugs in Obrycka's car or the bar owner's car if she didn't keep quiet, Abbate's friend allegedly said. Obrycka declined the bribe, ignored the threat, and called the police.
Four uniformed officers arrived. One sat at the bar and ate pretzels while another one recorded license numbers off the jukebox and other machines in the bar. The bar is not allowed to operate the jukebox and other accessories unless they pay for city licenses to do so. Perhaps it was important for the officer to make sure the city was getting it's cut.
Two of the four officers spoke with Obrycka. She told the officers there was a video of the beating and that the attacker's first name was "Tony" and his last name was something like "Abbot or Abate." She also told the officers that the attacker was a Chicago Police Officer. The officers completed their report and went back to their patrol cars. Meanwhile the bar manager arrived. He went out to the officers, now seated comfortably in their vehicles, and also told them the entire incident was recorded.

There are 2 types of cops that I can't stand. Corrupt ones and self rightous ones who pat themselves and each other on the back constantly. Get off the cross no one asked you to be a cop. No disrespect, but how many marines coming back from iraq talk about how corageous they are all the time. They don't, because true heroes don't seek recognition for their good deeds. I understand there are good cops and bad cops, but when the good ones cover for the bad ones, don't get mad when they lump all of you together. Sadly, this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. And yes, in many cases, the guilty police officers did NOT serve jail time. Sure, there is going to be the occasional incident -- nobody's perfect -- but if you look at Spokane's history of police abuse over just the past 15 years, you'll find that it's more than just one or two bad apples. As for those cops who don't do anything wrong? Why aren't they whistleblowing? No...instead they keep their mouths shut and allow the injustice to continue, even going so far as to "close ranks" with their fellow policemen to protect one of their own. As for what you have to do in the course of a week.....you chose the job. I'm not saying it isn't a tough job, but that doesn't excuse a policeman for abusing his station in any fashion...or another policeman for remaining silent when it happens.

Where did I call myself courageous? I let people know that police officer carry with them what they see just like the miltary over seas. I thank military for their service all the time and I signed up to be a police officer knowing all the risks.
I don't trust people that don't trust the police. I know that there are good cops (obviously the vast majority), middle of the road cops ( the majority of what's left over) and down right bad cops (a vanishingly small few). That's because the police are made up of a chunk of the population, and mirror what society is. Looking at the scum they end up dealing with undoubtedly gives them a jaded view, in the same way that reading republican comments gives me a jaded view, but the truth is, in my 44 years, I've had the opportunity to talk to a great many officers. Times when I was the scum, driving to fast and putting lives at risk, times when I was the victim, delivering pizza puts you there a lot, times when there was a mistake in identity, times when they just dropped in for food. They were always professional in each case, and I knew where I stood, and why. Maybe I've been lucky, and haven't run into bad cops. I've run into cops having a bad day, just like everyone does, and I've found that being polite works wonders, like it does with almost everyone.
But now, I restate that I don't trust people that don't trust the police. I've know quite a few of them too. Some were my friends, and were doing drugs. Some were co-workers who were making money under the table, or selling drugs. Many were people that had something to hide, casually breaking the law in all sorts of different ways, from illegally downloading to driving drunk. In my experience, people that don't trust the police, don't trust the police because the are committing crimes.
I keep my act straight, am older so I drive resposibly now, and treat every officer I meet with respect. I give bad cops no reason to treat me badly, or even look twice at me, and they haven't.
As for blaming the police for what they can and can't do for us, I just remember that every time we cut their budget, that's a crime they can't solve, a call they will be delayed on, a crazy driver they won't be there to catch. Society is a give and take; the services we get are the services we are willing to pay for, and Americans are getting so selfish that we don't pay for much.

Unless they link up these shootings via cell calls, it's nothing to be alarmed about. Be careful out there.. Especially in Camden, NJ where they just laid off half of their police force and 70 firefighters.. Yea, CAMDEN, NJ. Makes sense to you? Doesn't to me.

This is a national wake-up call. We must stand behind our officers "The thin blue line" all of us depend on every day. This is also another example of how Gun Control laws are so desperately needed. The criminals are outgunning our police and regardless of what your politics are that affects us all. It is time to stop the political gamesmanship that puts our officers and elected officials at risk and start acting in unison to come up with a coherant national strategy to meet this "Clear and Present Danger to our national security".

Not in my area, I haven't seen many criminals with the AA-12 combat shotgun, but there are a number of cops in my area who love these. We have a police force total 29, haven't had a murder in 7 years, and our cops seem to believe they need AA-12's. Overkill!

Hard to think of what I would do without the service that I "depend on every day". Sitting on the side of the highway in speed traps harassing commuters trying to get to work and support their families is quite frankly a service I could do without. The one time that I did need the police all they would do is "take a report". Thanks, that's quite a helpful service...

WQe have raised several generations of people on welfare, people who have no real use in society except to breed and use drugs and collect more welfare. Add to this the ever increasing influx of illegals, and the language barrier, and the ethnic gangs that arise in deprived areas, as well as the poor quality of our education, and you may understand why cops are reluctant to go into these neighborhoods.
The cops are asked to do a lot. They can't hold society together when it's coming apart at the seams. And their lives are in danger more than you may realize, because Meth addicts and the like have little regard for authority and have an inflated sense of their power when they are high. Plus, with mandatory sentences hanging over their heads if they are arrested, many of them tend to stand and shoot it out with the cops rather than go to jail. Some folks nowadays commit "suicide by cop", which is a way to get out of the losing game without having to kill onesself. It's only going to get worse, I pity the cops. They have jobs though, that's more than most of us, but God forbid the States have to cut the budgets even more, then we won't have police either, and if you think it's bad now, just wait.

I have had, on three different jobs, very high security clearances (and you don't get those with a criminal backgroud). I also ride a Harley.
At one job I had I got off work, after a 12 hour shift, @ 2:30AM. At least twice a week I was stopped by cops and ,after they demanded (with hand on his gun and once with his gun out) that I open my jacket then demand if I had any guns or knives.
When I would ask why I was pulled over, the most frequent reply was that my motorcycle matched the description of one involved in a robbery. FLAT OUT LIE !!!!
In addition to the original price of the brand new bike, I put over $20,000 into the bike plus $2800 in paint and artwork. The only labor cost was for chroming and paint --I did ALL of the work myself. There IS NO OTHER MOTORCYCLE ON THE PLANET THAT LOOKS LIKE MINE !!!

That's okay Old Fart, when I was younger, I scored one for our side. At the end of the night, the police returned me home and asked my father to keep me confined to the house for the rest of the evening. It's a night the police force won't forget and it started off with some career criminal pulling a shotgun on me. Oh, the gun toting criminal ran to the police for help. Based on my experience, I view police as revenue generators, pretty much useless for protection.

Most murderers are not first time offenders and usually are already convicted felons, unable to own firearms. Bad guys DO NOT obtain firearms legally. ALL law abiding citizens do. After all, writing parking/speeding tickets and lounging in donut shops dosen't do much to turn things around. Look at the root of the problem people. Where are the beat cops these days? Police in my area, DC/MD have been shooting people's dogs for no reason at all. It seems that they just make up a reason to shoot them as target practice. One dog was shot in a dog park. I feel bad for those who have fallen, but I think that people feel that this is a way to be heard as well.

I read some of the responses and was really amazed at some of the comments. Yes, there are abuses by those who enforce the law but the reality is that every profession has people who abuse. So it is not the profession, it is the individual person. These men have families and children just like I do, whether I like their profession or not. And the above comment that poverty leads to crime is just crap. Crime occurs when a person thinks that other people owes them something and the criminal mind thinks that they have a right to force another or take what they need. Our neighbor was accused of having drugs in his mouth, we saw 8 police beat him for more then 15 minutes. He was already handcuffed, and was cooperating the whole time, once they cuffed him, they began to assault him.
My wife and kids were there, and the cops told us, that if we did not go inside our home. they would KILL us.
We went inside and called the cops on the cops. Then a couple months after our neighbor was released on dropped charges, his report, said that he was jumped by a gang in jail.
So I have no compassion for the cops, they are a Gang with Badges.
Then we started to be harassed by the cops for about 4 months. They pulled us over once, and asked for our Insurance and License, all went well. Then every 4 days the SAME cop would pull us over and try to manhandle me, every single time.
The weak fool could not even budge me, once I started to fight them back.
Not surprising with mass unemployment, poverty and foreclosures. People across the nation feel they are being treated unfairly and will lash out if pushed to the breaking point.

Serve us???? I've never needed a cop in my 50 years that was around when I NEEDED them. The service you speak of is them writing tickets, searching without warrants, doing anything they want, while browbeating us for the same things. They are not above the law and need to be reminded of that. Some are honest, hard working, fair and respectful. Most are a bunch of donut sucking jackbooted pricks, that get off on bullying the public and expect the rest of society to kiss thier boots in fear of reprisal if you dare grow a backbone.

I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Cracker. Having been on that side of a badge for several years in the past, his description is more accurate than you think. The cops I knew (and still know) are generally the most racist people I know. The only law they enforce is their own and they believe they need no other reason to enforce anything they say other than they are the ones carrying a badge and a gun.
At the same time, not all officers are criminals, but sure as the gun in my pocket, I have yet to meet an honest criminal.
Then you are just as bad or, worse for not standing up and saying something about it. I know that no one likes a squealer but, if there is a serious enough problem officer or station it NEEDS to be addressed.
I'm suprised that the issue of PTSD hasn't been addressed. The stress of responding to a domestic call or walking up to a traffic stop by yourself will surely draw a knot in your stomach. If it doesn't then you need to seek help.
Then when you've submitted your case it gets picked apart in court by lawyers who know nothing of the stresses, the paperwork, the low pay... the B.S. It's no wonder that more officers just don't implode under the pressures.
If you want an amenable interaction with a police officer, then do what they tell you when they tell you to do it. Don't criticize until you've walked in their shoes. Go out with them for a "Ride-a- Long" or a dozen and see what it's like to clean up what society can't or won't do on their own.

This is in answer to reasonable conservative, this is what I was saying, if the good cops sit back and watch the bad cops and say nothing then when will all this stop, NEVER. I do feel bad that the police officer's lost their lives, no one deserves that, but please don't act as if they were complete angels. They are men and women who got killed on the job, they signed up knowing the dangers, and sadly they lost thier lives doing their job.

As sad as the killing of these officers is, it is obsurd to suggest its a "war" on cops. That would require an organized conspiracy which is not reasonable. Yeah I have never been harrassed by the cops here in Tucson. In fact when I caught someone breaking into my house they responded within 2 mins and caught the person 20 mins later. I have been given traffice tickets but im not mad about it, the cops did not act like asses and I did break the law. They were just doing their jobs, and I for one am very glad there are a few of us out there who are willing to enforce the laws and maintain order in our society.

The kind of violent person that would kill a police officer at a traffic stop or while their home is being raided for drug possesion, is the kind of person that is also a danger to other citizens.
People like me have recieved no trouble from Police despite being of an ethnic minority because the times I've been pulled over for some serious traffic violations I've been extremely polite and respectful and was let off easy. It was even the same officer two weeks apart and he came to visit me at work just to praise me for seeing me driving the speed limit and to see how I was.
Police are not the enemy except to the enemies of a peaceful society. I don't want drugs in my neighborhood and I don't want to raise a family in an area with drugs. That's made possible by Police and "the war on drugs".
If you don't like the laws and the enforcers of it here in America, go somewhere without and how much you like it there. You'll be begging to come back here where you have luxaries like 911. Police aren't perfect, but the ones who commit crimes are almost always brought to justice.

Mayor wants federal probe after SWAT raids house, kills dogs

A Maryland mayor is asking the federal government to investigate why SWAT team members burst into his home without knocking and shot his two dogs to death in an investigation into a drug smuggling scheme.
"This has been a difficult week and a half for us," Cheye Calvo, mayor of Berwyn Heights, Maryland, said Thursday. "We lost our family dogs. We did it at the hands of sheriff's deputies who burst through our front door, rifles blazing."
The raid last week was led by the Prince George's County Police Department, with the sheriff's special operations team assisting, after a package of marijuana was sent to Calvo's home.
Authorities say the package was part of a scheme in which drugs are mailed to unknowing recipients and then intercepted.
Calvo said he had just returned home from walking his two Labrador retrievers, Chase and Payton, when his mother-in-law told him a package had arrived for his wife, Trinity Tomsic.
Moments later, Calvo was in his room changing for a meeting when he heard commotion downstairs.
"The door flew open," he said. "I heard gunfire shoot off. There was a brief pause and more gunfire."
Calvo said he was brought downstairs at gunpoint in his boxer shorts, handcuffed and forced onto the floor with his mother-in-law near the carcass of one of dead dogs.
"I noticed my two dead dogs lying in pools of their own blood," Calvo said.
Calvo said his mother-in-law is still recovering from the incident.
"She got the worst of it," Calvo said. "She was literally in the kitchen, cooking a lovely pasta dish, and they brought down the door and shot our dogs."
While he was being held, Calvo said, he told police he is the town's mayor, but they didn't believe him.
Berwyn Heights has its own police force, he said, but Prince George's County police did not notify the municipal authorities of their interest in his home or the package.
"They didn't know my name. All they knew was my wife's name. They matched that to the registration of the car," Calvo said. "It was that lack of communication that really led to what has really been the most traumatic experience of our lives."
After the raid, arrests were made in the package interception scheme.
The incident has prompted the couple to call for a federal investigation because, they say, they don't believe police are capable of conducting an internal investigation.

The agreement was reached on the day the civil trial was scheduled to begin in Prince George's Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro.
County officials said they had 30 days to finalize the settlement. Calvo and a spokesman for County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) declined to comment on the amount of the settlement.
Although the details are not official, Calvo said the settlement will include an agreement by the Baker administration to change how county law enforcement officers conduct such operations. The changes will involve such issues as how and when SWAT teams are deployed and the humane treatment of pets.
"We're achieving reforms we were seeking," Calvo said. "This has been a 30-month process in which we have been trying to understand what happened to us and why. We learned a lot. We learned there were significant deficiencies in training and over-deployment of the SWAT team."
