I agree - this man was amazing because he did show how eating healthy could lead to a long life.
It says a lot when he had heart valve surgery at age 95 - that is not a recommended surgery at that age because Doctors tend to believe that patients won't be able to tolerate the anesthesia due to health issues. But he did, and lived another year still in decent shape.
Even his cause of death - pneumonia - is fairly common for someone his age (complications of it). It wasn't heart attack or anything like that.
If we all had the tenacity of him to eat and exercise healthy, we'd be a much fitter nation.
We're going to re-animate him with stem cells and send him out to juice YOU. I bet you couldn't swim Alcatraz handcuffed, shackled and towing a tug boat. Terminator LaLane's comin' for your a**. Joke karma.
96, what a run! To go as long as he did and be in the shape he was in, he defied a lot of odds. Pneumonia----you hear it more and more everyday. It's the killer that seems to reach a lot of death certificates.
For anyone interested in the many great feats Jack performed throughout his life, (like towing 70 boats with 70 people in them for 1.5 miles on his 70th birthday), visit his site at jacklalanne[dot]com and click on "Jack's Adventures" and then "Feats and Honors" in the left-hand menu. (MSNBC doesn't allow direct links.)
RIP, and even though I think you ran a good scam by selling products made in China. Iknow you did try to make a difference in people's lives, but unfortunately, like politics, there's always a monetary cost to what eveyone is selling these days.
If you old Jack and our govenrment was so into making people healthier, then why not strike a deal and create a government program for people to juice and eat better.
I'm sure a lot of people would love to have one of your juicers, but the cost on them is way too much for most people on limited incomes and low paying salaries.
I had seen him on QVC selling his products a year or so ago, and he looked like he was ready to fall over then. His wife did all the talking because he wasn't able to remember the product he was selling and how to even use the juicing machine he was selling.
Sad, but some people just don't know when to retire and let greed take over their lives. He was 96, he lived a good life and played a good game.
Sorry to hear about Mr. LaLanne. 96, he must of been doing something right. I only wish our yougins could see what they are doing to their bodies eating fast food slop daily.
I bet Mark Crap is so out of shape he couldn't swim to the other side of a kiddie pool. You know Mark, do you really have nothing positive to say about Jack as a person or have at least some respect for him? Furthermore, do you have to infect every thread with your sad and pathetic humor? It's amazing that you hold it against the majority of people on here that don't see your "humor". I don't see many people here that enjoy what you have to say so why do you keep trying? Or is it you that you really have NOTHING better to do?
Mr. LaLanne was, and still is, an inspiration to those of whom wish to live healthful, clean lives. He was a teacher, entertainer, and a great guy. Because of Mr. LaLanne's advice, I am often accused of being forty-ish, when in fact I am sixty-ish. The program really does work. Ninety-six? Wow!
I'm 56. I remember when one of the very few things on tv was the Jack Lalanne show. And yes, we would exercise with him. I remember him as being so young looking. In hindsight, I would never have guessed him as being mid-40s at that time. (Remember, I was only 4 or 5 then, too!)
Wow, what a run. I hope I can do nearly as well as he did and enjoy my life to the fullest. As he said, he didn't think about his age, either. (The only time I think about my age is when I try to pick up something too heavy, and I pay for it the next day. LOL) RIP Jack, we will always love you.
Jack LaLanne lived what he preached; he exercised and ate healthy. He lived his life as he wanted to. My grandmother, believed in moderation; she ate fruits and/or veggies every meal and walked on a regular basis. She was not thin or trim, but she lived to be 95.
My goodness there are so many people out there without a sense of humor. Mind you it was a stupid joke, But people get so wrapped around the axle over a person ya'll didnt even know.
Agreed--and drinking juice made out of veggies is no longer a novelty thanks to Jack... WTG Jack, you earned your rest.... RIP sir--no one deserves it more.
Jack La Lanne did not worry about "small" minded people. He was a very Larger than LIfe person to those who were inspired by his "mission" for good health; exercise, good diet.
Isn't that today's recommendation for a long life? He was ageless.
RIP Jack. As an older person, he truly was an inspiration for all.
Why is it when someone who lived a good life and who helped & inspired others passes away, there are always a few people out there that think about bashing him/her in the name of 'humor'? Is it that some people don't know that a line exists between what is funny and what is not? is it that hard for people to understand that? or is it just mass ignorance and insensitivity. No matter what the article is about, there are always people that will stop at nothing to incite hate.
An inspiration to us all, he will be missed. I hope to have as an abundant life as his. I will always cherish my Juicer and the energy I get from it. Thanks Jack!
That makes two of us. The weird thing is I was just reading through the recipes that came with the juicer these past few days because I was going to start using it.
Mark--- Much like a typical episode of Gilligan's Island that is mildly funny the first hundred times you see it, your "buried, cremated, or juiced" quip has lost considerable steam. How 'bout some new material?
what's key is that they were productive, active years. minimal decline and what most of us hope for--not to linger on the way out.
i hear so many people justify unhealthy habits with "when it's my time..." they don't realize there can be some miserable years at the end. live healthy, active and give yourself the best shot to go out like jack.
I think had he not caught pneumonia, he'd lived to see 100. That bug is so difficult for people of any age, particularly older people, to get over. It's sadly a fairly common COD now - I think Leslie Nielsen also died this year of the illness and complications from it.
Very true. Pneumonia is very difficult to treat once it reaches an advance stage it can kill even young healthy people let alone a healthy 96 year old. Many of the pathogens involved in pneumonia can also be resistant to antibiotics as well and that make treating it a difficult situation. Jack showed us how to live and that physical fitness is way to live a healthy long life. Too bad, I was sure hoping he make it to be 100 and most likely he would have this not happened. Jack you were an inspiration to us all.
I come from a family of beef dairy and fat eaters who live to be that old. Fitness may have made his quality of life better (especially the financial part) but his longevity came in his genes.
I come from a family of beef dairy and fat eaters who live to be that old. Fitness may have made his quality of life better (especially the financial part) but his longevity came in his genes.
Not necessarily. Jack's father died at an early age; his mom an average age. Plus I seriously doubt your family could, say, pull 70 rowboats filled with 70 people on their 70th birthday.
Fitness is not all about living "longer"... it's about living "better"... and Jack did that better than any of us.
I come from a family of beef dairy and fat eaters who live to be that old. Fitness may have made his quality of life better (especially the financial part) but his longevity came in his genes.
Jack was sickly as a child. I don't remember the exact details, but he began exercising and overcame his sickness. He went beyond just normal fitness to accomplish extraordinary feats of strength and endurance throughout his life. An impressive life, indeed.
No! That man was supposed to live forever. He seemed like a great guy. I remember him pulling a ship once on his birthday. I can only hope to be in a quarter of the shape he was. RIP Jack.
I remember watching his exercise shows (in black and white) as a kid and loved his white German Shepherd so much I got one of my own. Best dog I ever had.
Dog I believed was name "Happy". I too watch as a kid (B & W), hit by a car in 1967, after being hospitalized for 6 months, started exercising with Jack's show. I've always gave him thanks for what and how my life has been. Rest In Peace Jack!!

It's interesting to read some of the blogs. I didn't realize he had a show. May date me to being one of the younger ones. Just knew about his juicer ads.
Recently there was another article on how to get that natural glow instead of suntanning and this is the way!! that or anti-oxidants for those who are not willing to commit to just a life of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I do have a restrictive diet and if people just listened to their body more, they would be able to live longer. I knew several women who lived into their early 100's. Maybe grannies should come out with their hidden secrets?? =)
Rest in sweet-peace Jack! You were a great example and simply the best! I never shall forget watching my mom work out with you! Back then it was a black and white TV. What an incredible man! He preached things that made others better by being healthier, therefore more productive. While he made a profit and a living, he was improving the lives of others. I was looking forward to seeing him swim from Alcatraz to the mainland at 100 (the swim that authorities always said couldn't be done by prisoners).

Jack Lalanne has long been my inspiration. I exercised during his tv show when I was a kid.
When I joined my gym, it was called Jack Lalanne (and I still have the original membership card that is 20 years old this year).
Thank you Jack Lalanne. I am 50 years old with a 50 beats per minute heart rate BECAUSE OF YOU. God bless you.
The next thing you know, Jack Lalanne will be leading exercise classes in heaven.

I agree with Mariel.
