I guess one of the questions on every ones mind is if Mr. Kelly will be putting off his fast approaching shuttle mission to care for his wife.

I don't see any mention of that, but I am sure he will make the right choice.

Stellar007, I believe some time last week Capt. Kelly asked NASA to name a backup, which they did. I would imagine a lot will depend on how well she is doing by the time of the mission. Her mother might be able to help enough with her rehab that he can go ahead with the mission.

It's scheduled for Apr. 19, 2011 and is a 14 day mission. Rep. Giffords may be able to get by without him and possibly even tell him to go ahead and go by that time. His brother Scott Kelly is currently on the Space Station and looks just like him, oops just checked they are twins.

Her Government Health care seems to be serving her quite well. I hope she makes a full recovery and gets back to congress. Her story should shut people up who fear the term "Death Panels" and "Government Takeover". If this is government health care, I'd be glad to enroll in that plan!

However, if you have a pre exisitng condition or a college age child, and your insurance company decides to dump you or deny coverage, under the hcr, they cannot. In my mind, care of the people is more important than the profits of the health care industry. Sorry, but the American heroes are the 2 husbands that shielded their wives at the expense of losing their lives so their wives could live. Didn't you see the photo of her being taken away from the scene of the shooting on a gurney, surrounded by EMTs and covered in blood? I was wondering if the shooter shaved his head so he would resemble Captain Kelly. The shooter may have thought he could get closer by looking like her husband or he may have taken his obsession of her differently than what is being speculated about. He first "met" Rep. Giffords in 2007. Was that before or after she got married? Maybe this boils down to his feeling she rejected him by getting married? Who knows what goes on in the mind of a madman?

Either way, there is one very BIG difference in their looks. It's in the eyes. The shooter's are blanks, Capt. Kelly's are warm and open.

Karen, what difference is it to you if he takes pride in how he dresses. My father, who immigrated to the USA in 1954 from Italy after marrying my mother, and who was raised growing grapes in a vinyard for wine, always wore a suit.

He wore a suit jacket and dress slacks to work as a meat cutter for 50 years. He took off his jacket and placed on his meat apron to work, but that suit jacket went back on for breaks, and to and from work.

He always wore his dress suits to church ... no jeans and sweats to disrespect God. Sunday best meant exactly that, dressing your best out of respect. Not throwing on yesterday's sweat shirt and those work jeans.

My father always wore dress slacks ... no jeans or "work pants" ... and that is true of anyone WHO CARES HOW THEY PRESENT THEMSELVES in this society. My wife is a charge nurse in a clinic at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Unit "the pen". It is a phsyciatric unit including a 200 bed, or so, critical care hospital. The inmates have a "Cadillac" plan. Cardiac, Dialysis, Urology, Optical, Dental, Hip Replacement, Physical Therapy, Neurology, you name it, except for Viagra, they get it.

The health care law of 2009 must not be repealed. It must be modified to improve it and make it more effective.

You forgot something - Mr. Giffords ALSO works for the government and has a health care plan. As a married couple, each is eligible for coverage on the other's plan.

Whatever isn't covered by her plan will be picked up by his plan. Both of them have the very best plans availble anywhere in this country but CONGRESS HAS THE BEST POSSIBLE COVERAGE FOR THEMSELVES. I'm certain her plan alone would cover all the treatment she will receive.

If they were "normal" government workers instead of superstars, the insurance would still cover all the expenses and neither would be responsible for out-of-pocket expenses.

Interesting information but Mark is active military so I'm sure they could be using his benefits rather than what is available through the Fed's or a combination of both.

She was the most seriously wounded, and had a death announcement made about her. She gets dibs on coverage.

Heroic? Probably a good description. She showed up time after time to meet people in her district even though she had received numerous death threats. She had also complained both in public and in private about being targeted by Palin etc. She had expressed a fear that she could be shot. When she was shot in the head I think just about everybody figured she was dead. But alas, she survived. Not only survived but is progressing beyond wildest expectations. In this dark tragedy she has become the one glimmer of hope. She is certainly not the only hero but her will to survive has been nothing short of heroic.

In addition to being a "public figure," she's a person who has worked tirelessly for her constituents, and who continued to hold public meetings in spite of many death threats. The attack on her was the first attempted assasination of a member of congress in decades.

Take your pick of any of the above reasons why we're hearing about "this one victim." Frankly, as one of her constituents, I want to read as much as possible about her situation, especially when it's good news!

Also, a hero is someone doing something, or taking that risk, before they would want anyone else to have to. In short, she stepped up for convictions!

Which is why we should approach these reports with a healthy dose of skepticism. Depends what they mean by scrolling. My son has severe autism and is classified as low-functioning. His intellect is there, but he can't tie his shoes or get himself to the bathroom on time. At almost 27 years old, he has never uttered a word. He can only type with support. But he can scroll his ipad. He's a wonderful person and makes tiny bits of progress all the time, but would probably not get elected to Congress.

i totally agree that the rich or the known such as in this case are adornned with the best of care. i have a frontal global mass brain injury which i have had to struggle with daily, at my accident i had a glasgow reading of 3- no re- hab, if i were shot by an assassin would i still be in the shape i am now? why doesn't someone in power help us who don't have a name?

Not the most elegant language but I'm afraid I agree. If you or I get a brain injury, we do not get to cherry-pick from the best rehab facilities in the country. We go where our insurance company tells us to go, and if we don't have insurance, we may not go at all.

His behavior, shooting anyone in sight indicates quite clearly he was a Hinckley type. The acts were those of a mad man not a political assassin. Hinckley it was reported first stalked President Carter but could not get close enough, but when Reagan got in he was able to get close enough. Blaming other politicians is wrong, many politicians including Obama used similar metaphors. Obama said if they bring a knife to a fight, I will bring a gun. That comment was just a figure of speech. Really if the Congresswoman was not at the rally that day and someone else was, the shooter would still have come and started shooting. It was his moment.

They are covered for all procedures and they don't have to worry about co-payments. Our Congress voted for themselves the equivalent of universal single payer health care, while they took the same thing "off the table" for us.

Gabby is getting the same plans as I do as a federal employee and there is no cadillac plan for congress folks. They get the same as a federal employee. Some plans are better than others, some are not and the fees vary. So unless you have worked in the federal system you are not truly aware of what is done for federal employees.

I agree. The full recovery statements are not medically supportable. There is no way you get shot like this and not have some permanent damage. I have never heard doctors talk this confidently. It is almost like the book "1984". They are telling us 2+2=3 today, when a few years ago they would say 2+2=4.

I work on a rehabilitation unit and have seen clear miracles. People that come in with severe hemiplegia (half paralyzed), aphasia (cannot speak or possibly understand), and recover so that it would be hard for someone to even know that they had ever had a disability.

I have also seen time and time again the residual effects of brain injury from trauma and stroke. This will likely be a very long road of recovery and I wish the congress woman well. I will keep hoping for one of those "miracles" I have seen in the past.

No one likes the violence our country has, no one likes paying others to lay around and be useless members of society, no one likes having to worry aout where their next meal is coming from.

The differernce between conservatives and liberals is in how they want to end these things. Liberals want the people that work and pay taxes to pay for those that don't. Conservatives want those that won't work to suck it up and get a job or starve.

As for the Obamacare thing. I keep hearing about the 40 - 50 million without insurance or proper coverage. But during the initial push for Obamacare, it was admitted by the liberals that approximately HALF of those people have the choice of having insurance but elect not to get it. That is why the liberals added the law that would FORCE people to purchase insurance.

As for the congresswoman, I wish her a speedy and complete recovery, but why are we treating her like a GOD? She is just anothe human being. It is a sad state of our country that we can not feel the same empathy for ANYONE that has been shot or injured or faced serious illness.

I would be willing to bet if this was Sarah Palin, you liberals would be cheering that the wicked witch is dead! Look in your heart and tell me I'm lying. You liberals would have declared a national holiday to celebrate a senseless and tragic shooting.

LOL Truth's statements are correct. Psychologists call it the Collective Consciousness or the Collective Unconsciousness. This is something that is very well known. It's nothing new and there is nothing creepy about it. It's what helps make us human and is supposedly the font from which common sense springs.

They're not psychologists, they're philosphers. call it what it is.

You cannot say that full recovery is not possible. It's rare these days for a person to receive the best medical care possible in this country but it's a safe bet the best possible care is being provided here. The best care cannot guarantee healing in most cases, but anything less than the best will lead to less than optimal healing in most cases. Most people are not brain surgeons and therefore cannot tell whether the best care has been provided.

The brain and its functions are not yet fully understood. In cases of injury, parts of the brain take over the function from other damaged parts in order to compensate for the loss of their function. If these doctors are calling the Congresswoman's recovery "miraculous", then you can bet that it's truly miraculous. Doctors NEVER commit themselves to such an extent, so you may safely say the recovery has been "Miraculous PLUS"!

There may be residual injury in areas none of us can see. We all have strengths and weaknesses that are often known only to ourselves. Incomplete recovery will be in these areas that never have been visible to others and possibly have never been visible to the patient. If function is needed from these areas, it will likely be possible with time and repetition, but Congresswoman Giffords will be able to function at her job while this invisible healing continues.

The congresswoman has already shown that her most important parts, those that Mr. Giffords fell in love with and married, remain intact. She has been extremely fortunate to have retained ALL OF HERSELF! Rehab will help her express these parts of herself automatically again, as she did before she was injured. Physical function takes longer to re-establish. There are more tissues, organs and systems involved in physical movement. All these must be coordinated again. Physical therapy helps restore physical functions but speed and extent of this cannot be as easily predicted because of the multitude of parts involved in physical movement. Again, recovery of physical function is ongoing and will continue long after Mrs. Giffords is back at work.

Based on the speed and extent of the Congresswoman's recovery to this point I'll bet on her husband's second prediction - that Mrs. Giffords will be walking back through the same hospital doors she is leaving behind tomorrow within two months time to visit those who cared for her up to now. He was correct with his wild first prediction she would be leaving the hospital in two weeks. When she leaves tomorrow it will be 2 days ahead of his first prediction. He hasn't yet predicted when she will be ready to return to work. That will be prediction #3 and I'll bet with his prediction again.

There is still a piece of Mrs. Giffords' skull in the hospital freezer. As long as this piece remains on ice instead of back on Mrs. Gifford's head where it belongs, she is vulnerable. Once that missing piece is returned to her head, Gabby Giffords will no longer have to worry about infection. I hope the doctors aren't being overcautious about replacing that piece of skull now. Does the brain expand as it regains function? Maybe that explains their reasoning.
