Sheriff Clarence Dupnik is an idiot. He needs to stick to the facts, do his job, and keep his personal political views, opinions and beliefs to himself.

Arizona is a melting pot. We have people move here from all over the U. S. If he thinks our state is divisive, it's because of the people who have moved here, not from the people who have lived here for years. I agree, he needs to tend to his own knitting.
Sheriff Dupnik needs to be removed-he has interfered with a federal case. The whole sheriff's office seems to be as corrupt as Mexico. And that the Community College didn't report their concerns to the sheriffs office is unconscionable. If they had, maybe this never would have happened, he wouldn't have been able to purchase a gun.
More needs to be done about the state of mental health in this country. Yeah-state institutions were horrible in the past, but so were prisons. The mentally ill that are a danger to themselves or others need to be helped. The mentally ill that cannot care for themselves need care so they aren't homeless and victimized by criminals.
Actually, he appears to be a thoughtful and insightful man who was just saying what many people are thinking (people with the capacity for intelligent thought)- how refreshing
Actually, he appears to be a thoughtful and insightful man who was just saying what many people are thinking (people with the capacity for intelligent thought)-
Intelligent thought? Hahahahaha...maybe at your level of intelligence. To me, he's a complete idiot!!!
The sherriff has the right to his opinion just like everyone else. These teabaggers make themselves look like fools when they demand they have a right to say what they like without censorship, then immediately tell others to shut up and suggest they have no right to speak. IQ was never a strong point for them..
As a law enforcement officer, Sheriff Dubnik has more information, experience and right to comment on this matter than any of us.
Wrong!!! As a New York State Trooper myself. he does not have the authority to interject his personal beliefs or thoughts on the matter. He can only comment on the facts!!! What police academy did you graduate from? This is law enforcement 101!!! This sheriff should be fired for this act!!! It seems that your IQ and ability for cognitive reasoning are lacking considering your "law enforcement" career.
He is hired to do law enforcement, not political commentary. His comments probably HURT the federal case against Jared. His office told people making complaints that this guy was on the mentally ill list, and he wasn't. Why? IF he is on that list like the people who complained were told he was - he cannot purchase weapons and ammunition.
Personally, I like the sheriff. I find that many people here in Tucson have a lot of respect for him. This is probably the reason he's been elected 6 times in this county.
I find it pretty funny that you people who don't live in Pima county would complain about something you have absolutely no control over. Good luck with your whinning!
The Echo Chamber causes divisiveness. It is the phenomenon of being too lazy to be well informed, so people start parroting talking points and sound bites--these come from the media, politicians, the people you know at work or church, etc.
People need to take responsiblity to learn facts on their own. The problem is, most don't know how. At the root of all this is the anti-intellectualism movement. Americans have been so dumbed down they no longer use the Rule of Reason.
Everyone should be required to take Research Methodology 101 and learn what a credible source is. For example, Wikipedia and Snopes are far more credible than the right-wing viral E-mails conservatives receive and distribute on a daily basis. Where did the E-mail originate from? They don't know, yet they believe the E-mail and not their government (e.g., the CBO) or science or experts who have devoted their lives to economics, foreign policy, etc.
Every time I hear a conspiracy theory, it doesn't take me long to Google and see it is complete chicken crap. Often it gets back to a profit motive, like the guy who sells supplements who says MSG is addictive, or the guy who sells seeds who starts a hybrid seed conspiracy. Why are conservatives so gullible? If it sounds too crazy to be true, it probably isn't true.
Also, truth grows legs very quickly, and will be exposed by mainstream media (e.g., CNN, the NY Times, or the Associated Press, etc.). If you're only hearing about something from E-mails or some obscure website/blog, well that's your first clue it only has enough truth to get you to believe the lies. In addition, entertainment programs like Limbaugh or commentators like Glenn Beck are confused for real news that's held to journalistic standards (such as facts). These programs are for entertainment, and are completely driven by ratings and profits.
So come on Americans, let's not go backwards to the Dark Ages when the masses couldn't read or write and were so easily manipulated. Step out of the No Fact Zone and into enlightenment.

Nonsense! Please speak, shows how nuts you left-wing crazies are. By the way, we're winning the argument, as shown in the November elections.
Sheriff Dupnik is a tool. He has gotten his 15 minutes of fame on the shoulders of the casualties of the shootings. Good thing he wasn't there to protect anyone though or provide security, since the man can't even qualify with his weapon.
It took a couple of elderly people including one of those ex military type people that Janet Napalitano was so worried about to stop any further loss of life. I guess Dupnik was too busy to bother with providing at least one officer to provide security for a Congresswoman and a Federal Judge at a gathering where he knew a lot of people would show up at.
Well, monkey, we will see about that the next time he comes up for re-election. What he did making a personal conjecture without fact was very unethical and unprofessional.
i, for one, refuse to condemn Arizonans. I think most people, anywhere (which includes Arizona...) are decent and good. Obviously, good, decent people can say, think, or do bad things sometimes, and depending on the situation, that may change them from good and decent to neither one. And, obviously, there are bad, indecent people, but I think they're very much the minority.
I don't know about the Sherriff doing something he could get kicked out for, but being Sherriff does not prevent him from having the right to an opinion (in my opinion...) :)
MSNBC is the epicenter of divisiveness. The real goal here is to create doubt about talk radio (even though it had nothing to do with it) and then somehow slip the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" into place. Never let a good crisis go to waste. All in then name of stopping violence. How obscene. There is NOTHING the left will not try to accomplish their agenda. They are desperate and have absolutely no conscience. To even have to answer all this bullsh_t about "viatrol on the airwaves" is an insult to free Americans. Those on the left have no idea what is even on Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, or other right-leaning programs because they don't watch/listen. The only hate I hear being spewed is from the left daily via the mainstream media.
The Sheriff is hiding from the cameras now that the questions are about what his department did, what they could have done, and what they knew. Looks like the whole blame game he started was to deflect attention away from the Sheriff's Dept.
Arizona is actually trying to arrest illegal aliens who are committing a crime. And that is radical? Funny, I thought the word "illegal" actually meant something.
Daylight savings time needs to go. YOU CANNOT CHANGE TIME. We've got a Gov't that is so ignorant that they think they can change time. A few hundred years ago when lighting was whale oil or a candle, it may have made sense. But now, it just messes up people and is actually a danger. Ask any person in MADD what day has the most auto accidents in the US. (Trust me, you'll get an argument from those puritan zealots even with Dept of Transportation numbers in front of them). In most years, it is the MONDAY AFTER WE ALL GET JETLAG DUE TO LOSING AN HOUR OF SLEEP when we "spring forward".
The highest MURDER RATE IN THE COUNTRY, EXCEEDING THE MURDER RATE FOR THE COUNTRY OF MEXICO, is in Washington DC. They have THE most restrictive gun laws in the country.
Arizona - I salute your bravery in the face of a liberal media onslaught.
It is a beautiful place. I encourage all of you to check it out.
@JERSY GIRL 1 - I would wager that if he was a republican, that you and others here wouldn't be complaining about him, no matter what he said. Yeah.. we'll see at re-election won't we?
The sheriff is a political position unlike that NY State trooper, that shot his mouth off, position. The sheriff is supposed to set the tenure for law enforcement in his district. A State patrol officer is just that and they should concentrate on keeping their car pointed in the right direction. The sheriff has latitude, the trooper does not.
Dupnik is only Sherriff because liberal Tucson is bigger than conservative Pima County. We have real issues here, like a porous border, criminals that use Mexico like a "get out of jail free" card, and contraband passing through Tucson on its way into and out of Mexico. Did your car get stolen in Tucson? Just wait: ICE will eventually impound it on the border, full of drugs or people. I don't carry firearms, but I see it this way: restricting non-specialized (I mean military purpose) weapons only hurts the law-abiding individual's ability to protect himself. Make it illegal to carry a firearm into a certain location, like w/i 1000 ft of a politician, as has been suggested, and you potentially shoren the politician's lifespan. Sounds counterintuitive, but look at it from a criminal's (or crazy man's) POV: "why should I worry about a misdemeanor when I am committing a capital crime?" Really, there are only 2 choices in gun control: remove restrictions that restrict the rational individual's ability to do good, or remove all weapons of any kind from society entirely. Even if somehow you could remove all guns from every person in the US, including criminals, you would still have murders. Case in point: the disgruntled man in Japan a few months ago who killed or injured nearly 20 people with his 6" knife. Jared Laughner could have easily done the same damage w/o a firearm. If he used a knife, Rep. Giffords would be dead for sure, as he would have went for her chest or neck, severing an artery.
fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox fox ...
True Patriot - I get email from the right and the left. They both are about picking the other a part. Both send partial truths. Neither really listens very well.
I've looked though and source checked quite a bit of what has been said. I found one major partial truth from the right.
"Wednesday was not the first time she opened her eyes" The statement suprisingly does carry truth to it. Her eyes had opened a number of times - BUT physicians believe (and probably correctly so) that those events were involuntary. Doctors have since clarified this as the case.
The rest are from the left
Limbaugh, Beck, Palin divisive words caused this - NO, the guy did not listen to or read them.
The guy was a right winger - NO, he is a-political - didn't even vote in 2010.
The guy had links to Palin's website - NO, that was a fake site, not his.
Let's just put it this way, even though America was shocked at the assassination attempt, nobody is the least bit surprised that when it did happen, it happened in Arizona. The ultra-right here are exceptionally unspooled and violent, and with them in charge of our state's government, it really is like the inmates running the asylum.
Interesting that the conservatives are talking about personal responsibility at the same time they refuse to address their key role in this massacre... Well done, Ryan.
What is their key role? In your opinion Toasty? Because I say the key role in this is liberal policies in our judicial system that allows criminals to run amuck in this country! But I won't sit here and tell you that I am right and you are wrong because I am not a liberal who thinks that only my views are true.
OK, lets get the facts straight. First and foremost Mr Sheriff started this misinformation and finger pointing. He is lucky he has not been run out of Tucson by his fellow Arizonians. Since when are we to believe a left wing Sheriff blaming the right wing for a left wing nutjobs attempt to kill a conservative left wing Poiltician. The Sheriff need to do his job and keep his mouth shut about his opinions, PERIOD. This is the same Sheriff that refused to obey his own states law regarding the invasion of illegals into his state. Hey pal do your job, take off the MSNBC hat and while your at it try to take that big foot of yours out of your mouth......
This is a case of a nutjob that fell thru the cracks. I pray for him and all who have suffered by his madness.
As for the red and blue BS that is pumped into every situation, it is BS nothing more nothing less. If you take seriously the Russ L's or Rachel M's of this world, you are just as much a part of the problem as they are. Believing Russ's blow horn or Rachel's sugar coated hate mongering is just plain dumb. A poison pill is a poison bill regardless of the delivery method. MSNBC/FOX are not not news organization, they are propaganda machines for their respective parties.
Please take those blue and red glasses off and become part of the solution. Vote for anything but the 2 major parties. A vote for the same old is just that, a vote for the same old S--t that plagues this country.
Ya sure blame the media and their lies. Wait that is what we should do. Their are as many left winger liars as their are right winger liars. Politicians 100%included.
Stop veiwing there shows on MSNBC and FOX. Put your viewing dollars somewhere else. When the sponsors leave them we will not have to hear their hate mongering lies anymore.
Sheriff Dupnik is a tool. He has gotten his 15 minutes of fame on the shoulders of the casualties of the shootings. Good thing he wasn't there to protect anyone though or provide security, since the man can't even qualify with his weapon. I guess thats why he doesn't like guns since he couldn't hit the broad side of a warehouse.
Arizona did not pass an "anti-immigration" law, contrary to MSNBC's REPEATED FALSE CHARACTERIZATIONS! Arizona passed an ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAW. "ILLEGAL" being the operative word that is ABSENT from MSNBC'S MISREPRESNTATION!
ARIZONA IS AGAINST LAWBREAKING-- JUST AS THE OTHER STATES AND OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE! (I am not from Arizona and I AM a "liberal"- by the way). ANY GOVERNMENT, which REFUSES to enforce ITS OWN LAWS, is INTOLERABLE!
if I just call the people with the signs and the silly little headscarves liberal nutjobs, is that ok? Or is that gonna be hate speech? If I am going to be called a right wing hatemonger - I am simply not feeling the love. You know who I mean? The torn jeans wearing, mac computer using, Whole foods shopping recycled plastic bags, voting for people who think with their emotions instead of their heads fools who protest anything remotely profitable and are still living off their parents. . . .you know - those liberal nutjobs.
I'll take the people, culture, attitudes, and beliefs of the people of Arizona any time versus the liberal stupidity, the liberal "we know best attitude", and the condescending liberal "we're superior attitude" that most liberal trash across this country exhibit. I know I can depend on the people of Arizona, and I also know you can't trust a liberal left-wing idiot as far as you can spit!! Arizona is being victimized by a liberal vendetta because its citizens just don't buy the liberals' line of BS!
The divisiveness is about opportunism. It's so amazing how so many people just know in 2 minutes who did what - before anyone actually investigates. First one out with the "facts" grab the emotional foothold. When the facts come out, most people are no longer paying attention and are left with the wrong opinion of the facts.
I once lived in Arizona and over the last 20 years I've watched the people there change into bitter, angry whiners that feel the need to blame every misfortune on someone else, it used to be blacks, then it was easterners and now it's Mexicans and/or liberals, but notice never themselves. You Zonies have made your cesspool, may you all drown in it.
PV Person so when you stand at four corners and then cross 10 feet over into New Mexico, or Colorado or Utah things are different. What happens in your own house when you leave your Bedroom and go into the Kitchen. Everything changes. You dont have crazy people in your State. Oh and you have never whined.? What a lame excuse for an argument your brain has come up with.
It is because of all the jerks who have moved here that has caused our state to become what it is. Had the federal government done it's job of securing the border, we wouldn't be dealing with the problems we are now. It has obviously been a while since you lived here and you have no idea what our state goes through now because of all the illegals.
I guess until you have had a child kidnapped or raped by an illegal, you couldn't begin to understand.
Folks, more people will be moving to Arizona, with taxes going sky high in Illinois and California!! Those states that are not business friendly while Arizona is giving business tax breaks!!! Even the rental market is smokin....I have one for lease now and phone won't stop ringing.
If you guys want to collapse good comments, then it can work both ways and the Conservatives can collapse your comments as well. There was nothing wrong with the comments Just a Proud American or give me a break made. Shame on you for your censure of these comments. What happened to your freedom of speech or does that only apply to you liberals?
PV person, As a native "zonie" as you put it, and having lived here all my life I find insult in your comments. Until about 15 yrs ago, we had the same issues as other people in other cities and states. Once we became "THE" place to live and thousands of people moved here, then and only then, did we start having issues. If the Feds had done their job we wouldn't be dealing with illegal immigration that is also harming our state, as well as CA,TX,NV, NM It is NOT just due to illegal immigration, mostly due to all the people from other states not liking their state, moving to AZ and changing everything and anything they could. And we're still getting people moving in with their own way of life, own thoughts and own motives. AZ WAS a great place, a safe place, a wonderful place to live, WAS!!! And generalizing all the people in AZ as creating the "cesspool" shows your bias, lack of knowledge of the truth, and demeaning to the "good"people and yourself!! Shame on you!
All we have to do is read the hateful, intolerant posts here from Arizona residents to confirm what we already suspected. Congratulations on becoming the hate capital of the world.
Check that Irishlynn, you are a state , not a country. Merely a smaller part of a larger country and that is what we do here in the good old USA. We move freely from place to place. You wouldn't have it any other way now would you? We surely don't want to go back to that state's rights discussion do we?
You are right about one thing though on illegal immigration. We don't include Mexico as part of the USA as of yet. So we need to enforce the border or just roll it up and put it in storage. It's either there or it ain't. Somebody needs to make up their mind if we have a border or not. And if so, what is it's purpose?
AZ is my homestate, and unfortunately you are very correct in your assessment of what is going on there. Worse yet, the neo-nazis have now a foothold in government there with Russell Pearce, as a congressman and neo-nazi member, who even wrote that the Holocaust was Jewish fairytale. Something needs to change this dessert state.
Grease, a couple of years ago we had an illegal who had been deported for rape twice before in California, illegally cross the border and rape many teen girls after their parents left for work. It took months for the Chandler police to catch the guy. It is bad enough when a legal resident does it, but for an illegal who has already been deported and allowed to cross again illegally into a state and do the same is apprehensible. Chandler is a very nice quiet community and people used to feel safe here, but the violent crime has been on the increase and most of it is because of drugs and illegals.
Oh, please--you couldn't begin to understand what is going on until your child is kidnapped or raped by an illegal? Well, JERSY GIRL 1, then I guess you don't understand what you are talking about either.
Go to the Bureau of Justice Statistics and use their tool for calculating particular kinds of crimes by state. Here is the path: BJS Home Page > Data for Analysis > Data Online > Crime Trends > State Level > State-by-state
You will find that the population of Arizona in 2000 was just over 5 million, and the number of forcible rapes was 1,577. You will find that in 2007 (the most recent date available), the population was over 6 million, and the number of forcible rapes was 1,856. You will also find that in the year 1997, the number of violent crimes was 28,411, total. In the year 2007, the number of violent crimes was 30,600.
Moreover, during the recession, the number of illegal aliens has fallen. The station KVOA reported on February 22, 2010, that the number of illegal aliens had dropped by more than 100,000 in 2008--the largest drop in any state in the nation. This trend has continued.
So, first, there is no problem with violent crime in Arizona. It has been dropping (you have to look at the number of crimes per the number of citizens) for the last decade, and the last two years have held true to this pattern. There is no "illegal immigration" problem in Arizona--the number of illegal aliens has been dropping for the last two years.
As a clever person once pointed out--you are entitled to your own opinions, but you are not entitled to your own facts. There is no illegal alien problem in Arizona that is increasing--illegal aliens are self-deporting in larger numbers than they are entering, and there is no violent crime problem in Arizona that is rising. Those are the facts, ma'am. It would be delightful if you would stick to them.
Arizona has attracted some very unpleasant politicians. I don't think that the people there are an issue--I think that the people who go there and have vacation homes are the problem. Though you can claim otherwise, they are largely elderly, they are largely conservative, and they enjoy punking the political process there because they don't live with the consequences.
Ronald Reagan was right--the introduction of Medicare was a social experiment that could well cost us our freedoms. Here is what he said when speaking against the "socialized medicine" that is Medicare: "we're going to find ourselves spending our sunset years telling our children and our children's children about a time in America, back in the day, when men and women were free."
The elderly people who come into Arizona are living in the 20th century, just like McCain. And, just like McCain, they have absolutely nothing to lose by playing to the mentally ill and the uninformed to convince them that violent crime is rising, there are hordes of illegal aliens entering Arizona, their children will soon be kidnapped and raped. None of those things are true. But, if you believe them, you will pass laws that very much benefit the elderly people who will never have to pay for the costs of them.
Wise up. Learn to read. The elderly are coopting our political process because they have the free time and the money to do so--they don't have to live with the consequences of turning us against each other. We need to think of the future, and we need to deal with the realities of the present--not the nonsense spouted by Fox News, a station beloved by the elderly because it sounds just like the news organizations of their youth.
Arizona is not the epicenter of deviceveness. That title belongs to Rush Limbaugh, his little brother Shawn Hannity, and cousin Glenn Beck. The three stooges of politics, that get paid millions of dollars every month to entertain a certain segment of the population (just like the original three stooges). Their only job is to keep this segment of the population agitated, upset, an angry. These emotions keep their followers tuned in every day. If you don't care about what you say, you can say anything.
"I have never seen Rush Limbaugh's birth certificate. How do I even KNOW he is an American" If you get paid to be negative, you can always find something negative to say.
Your disgusting bigotry regarding the elderly is dispicable. Most of those people paid the taxes for as much as 40 to 50 years to help pay for the things you have today, such as roads, schools etcetera. Since they have been footing the bill for you youngins perhaps they do have the right to have an input into the government. after all, they've probably paid more for the right than you have.
The murders in Tuscon were not committed by an illegal alien. Not by a Black person. Not by a whacky northerner fleeing the cold or taxes. Not by a Californian escaping escapists.....
It was a White male, raised in Arizona. So quit blaming everyone else for your issues.
If the people there spent more energy on helping others and preserving the amazing light that spread beautiful colors across the desert - instead of finding reasons to dislike people - Arizona would be the state I lived in back in 1976 and 1977. Peaceful with an adventurous spirit.
Now it seems to have a shortage of water, and a greater shortage of heart and kindness - especially around Phoenix. I used to think I would retire in Prescott. Now I know I'm retiring in the Northwest.
AZ has been diverse for it's entire 99 years. Just like every state it goes through growth and adjustment. 10 years from now its population will be 15+% larger than it is today even without a single change to politics. Those that are complaining that it is worse than "their" state are throwing bricks while living in glass houses.
I have lived her 55 of those 99 years and I have seen a lot of change. Some good and some bad, but I think our state is far better than say California or Illinois where there has been a liberal bastion of society. Although we are in debt thanks to Janet, it is not as bad as the states I mentioned.
well, jersy, i have never lived in AZ but I've spent over 20 years in CA and I absolutely love it here. Each of us has our opinion, and as I said above, I refuse to condemn Arizona or Arizonans for the acts of one crazy person. I have relatives in AZ (just went to visit them in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago), and what little I've seen of it was absolutely beautiful, and I wouldn't blame you for loving where you live as much as I love where I live. I disagree with your politics but I will not insult your homeland; please afford us the same courtesy.
The scenery there can't be beat. Good luck to you. Half the country is with you.
Unfortunately not the half in the media.
Ever noticed how there is only one supposedly "conservative" network, but several liberal ones?
Seems like if our half canceled our subscriptions to the NY Times, etc, they wouldn't be able to spew their hate at conservatives. Hey, you can get crossword puzzles elsewhere.
bckm, thanks for the nice comments. I think California is an absolutely beautiful state. I spent a week in Laguna Beach this summer. But, because of all the social programs there, your state is in big time financial problems. I expect that sometime in the future you will expect the Federal Governmnt to bail your state out. That means the rest of us would be paying for your ills. I am not a Republican, I am an Independent, but I own my own business, and I know what fiscal responsibility is. You just can't keep spending in your state without it finally getting to be a crisis. All the liberal spending has put it in a crisis just like Illinois. When your state government wants to cut programs as your governor is now proposing, it is a good thing. Your only other choice is to have 65% raise in state taxes. That will drive more residents from your state who pay taxes and drive away business, and that would be a diaster. So think about it next time you want to elect another liberal, spend, spend, spend Democrat.
Yes. Isn't it also telling that on topics about Obama or immigration and what not the top comments are always deleted? When you have sitting congressman and senators such as Mcailin out there who refuse to even shake the presidents hand there is a problem. I go to racism. Why? Because knowone has ever refused to shake the presidents hand in modern times until he was black. Refusing dinner as a party as did the right when Obama invited them is unheard of in Washington until now.
Tell me this. If the right is ssooooooooooo concerned with solutions answers and it is not hate why do they refuse to work with the left at all until recently in the tax business? Why do they attack and attack and refuse to work together for solutions? What is more America is not there's to claim. It is OURS. That means you don't get your way as you want it with you deciding it all. NO! You work together for all of us to compromise to make everyone happy or miserable equally. Having a justice interrupt the pres during a state of the union is childish but Alito is a republican. It is more then childish to call people names yet nameless over there shouted the president was a LIAR on the house floor during another address. Although extremism comes from both sides it is the right who has let there's into power on the floor. It is the right who refuses to do what they are paid to do. The work of this nation. It is the right who sees those as of late who disagree with them as ENIMIES. Not fellow free Americans with the freedom to have and use there own ideas. The right is nothing. Nothing more then a dissolving party telling you and I to do what they say not as they do while they get paid to be servants take vacations give themselves raises whining about socialism while they redistributed our wealth to bailout companies that should no longer exist. To give themselves pats and bonuses.
Mowdy - Look, 2/3 of Federal Spending is entitlements, and 2/3 of states spending is Social Services and Education.
Gov't revenue is at near record levels.
What more do you want from us?
Now you are mad we don't want to "Compromise" with you and give you what you want: higher taxes?
Every bit of anything you could define as "Corporate Welfare" "Farm Subsidies" "Highway Improvements" "The ENTIRE US MILITARY BUDGET" and "Federal Law Enforcement" combined could be cut to ZERO and we still wouldn't be in the black.
40% of every Federal Dollar spent is borrowed now.
We are sitting on a train going over a cliff but you find it hate speech when we ask "to slow the train down"?
So Mowdy, I guess you are ready for that "one party" government. Right? Course it's got to be your party. Isn't it amazing there could be enough fools in the country to actually form a political party. And gee, you're smarter than all of them. Just because the GOP won't lay down and accept Socialism without a whimper hardly makes them inferior of character and certainly not to be reprimanded by " holier than thou" opponents of democracy. There's enough blame to go around in either party. Mistakes have been made by our leaders. McCain may have not shook hands but neither did he bow to a Saudi King.!!
And lest we forget, remember when Janet Reno went wacko in Waco.
Our state is not and has never been racist. The vice president of our student body in high school was black. He was one of the most popular kids in school. Everyone loved him and his sister. I have many friends who are minority of all races, Black, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hispanic, etc. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Number one Mr. Texas you speak as though you can give me anything you can't. If you were an elected rep then it would be your DUTY to work for the betterment of America as a whole. I am not repub or Dem so your generalization is not new. But you speak of entitlements do you? Is SSI an entitlement? Yes. You know why? Because I'm entitled to the money I PAY in to it in taxes every year so do you wanna cut what millions of working Americans are entitled to? Because that is NOT the government giving handouts my friend. The American people are entitled to the money they worked for and paid in and are paying in to the system.
As for higher taxes? The top percentage of this country with dollars do not deserve any tax cuts. They should pay more. Why? Number one the top ten company's in America have not paid taxes in 9 years or more. So in actuality most fortune 500 company's don't even pay that much in taxes if ever so why did they need the handout I gave them in the form of the bailouts both Bushs and Obamas? Are they just so poor and lowly they need handouts from the poor? At least the poor spread it around. Spread around what they do not have. The rich have yet its like pulling teeth to squeeze a nickel out of there behinds. The right represents the rich.
Now you speak of farm subsidies and welfare and what not but not ONE word uddered for the wall street handouts. Not just the bailouts but the subsidies and all of the other programs the tax PAYER pays for that goes to the rich on wall street and in general. Trickle down is horse crap in this global market. They tried it AGAIN under Bush and it wrecked the world. The world my friend. The world. Why? Because greed is everywhere and the greedy cannot be trusted to do the right thing ever.
So remember this, your outrage was complacent and indulgence was yours I'm sure during the Bush years of deregulation. Where was your whining under Bush when he gave to us America the BIGGEST government in history? The biggest deficit in history? Huh? I didn't hear you then and I cant hear you now. The right is responsible for the economic downfall of this country but you expect any of us to believe they can fix it to? Instead they hinder our recovery at EVERY turn. Are we expected to believe you have something to give poor little old us let alone actually have something to offer? You had eight years to slow the train down but you didn't. Know why? Cuz your friends and maybe you were driving it. ; ]
Devicive?Who in the bloody hell here has had congress give the presidente of Mexico a standing ovation for a speech attacking that sates soverign right to govern itself?I dont care who you are,or where you live, thems fightin words there.Dont expect many friendly overtures from the people of this state when you go against the grain of common sense and decency because the media told you to.
Actually miss 58 there should be multiple party's not one and worst of all not two. At least not the same two controlling the party lines. But here is a clue since you probably couldn't buy one yourself. I don't have a party. You could have asked that question but you chose not to. Why? Because generalizations are your whole life is my guess. You would rather label people first and never ask questions. Just like the republicans I speak of. Are you one?
As for your GOP wont lay down for socialism line. Jog on will ya. Bush gave us the BIGGEST government in history not Obama, Bush did that. Socialist. Bush also gave us the BIGGEST deficit from a surplus mind you in history. Socialist. He enacted the patriot act and we never officially declared war Bush did that. Socialist. Need more cuz I got all day. So I have to ask, do you know what socialism means or what it is? As for the bow down to the Saudi line of yours? At least he didn't bend over for it like Bush did for eight years my friend.
As for miss 1. I'm sure your state is not completely racist. Why not show us Americans that by making sure they are not predominant and the only ones heard from your state.. Remember Russel pearce? From your state? Elected official behind the illegal immigrant law? That is who represents you. A known active Jew hater who hangs around neo nazis sending anti semetic e mails to everyone.
And when did you ever hear any conservative say Entitlements would go to ZERO?
The biggest part of Bush's expansion of Gov't was the prescription drug benefit. Never heard a liberal say anything about that.
No one buys your rhetoric anymore. The country is headed to economic trouble under Liberal ideas.
You got your turn for over 80 years, and it didn't work, not because they are not good ideas, but because you couldn't ever pay for them. If you could, you would have. Democrats have held control longer during those years.
Miss silly. You are just that. Do you know why we need illegals? Besides the fact it works and has for decades we as Americans weather you like it or not need them to compete. Why? Because the beloved republicans have stated they will NEVER stop giving incentives to move jobs to the third world like India. So why would any business make jobs here when its cheaper to do otherwise. They wont. However Americans can easily even the playing field to compete with outsourcing by using cheap labor. How do you think that neighbor your soooo jealous of got rich? How do you think the little guy got ahead during the housing boom? Why do you think the economy has folded sooo fast? Because along with everything I named in my afore mentioned post illegal immigration has been driven to record lows. Every other crisis in our nations history such as the depression have always had that to reinvigorate the economy. That is why everyone looked the other way soooo long. So don't come crying over hear cause you cant find a job. Maybe you should hope to work together to beat those commies and other countries that are passing us by so very quickly instead of your fellow Americans the right seem to hate so much.
Hell guy, republicans do not even believe in education even though it is mandated to go to school by the government. Even though America is not first in education in any subject. How else is America going to compete if the right wont even invest in education? ; ]
Yeah even the evil Communist China educates just enough. To use whomever they need to get ahead. And our nation is just turning a blind eye to education. They are even building nuclear plants 5 years faster than we ever have.
But you want to send more jobs to china and India and not work with this side of the world. AKA Mexico and South America and Canada. We really need a new Nafta agreement. And need to halt the Chinese imports
Then only then you might see an increase in USA jobs. Ask your Governor about that AZ
I'm with you Arizona...waiting for my ignorant state to join the fight...after a few more murders and child molestations, maybe they will get the hint that it's time to stop the flow of illegal aliens into our beautiful state. I moved out of my hometown of 50 years, because I was afraid to go outside after dark. It has become a cesspool of violence, graffiti, gangs and crime. It was once a place where you didn't have to lock your doors; now I won't drive through it in broad daylight, without my car doors locked. Disgusting.
Miss pierce. Your out dated redderickk is just that. Go look up the stats for illegal to legal American committing crimes. It is fitting that the right who love guns as I do are sooo afraid of every little thing. Afraid of this that there own shadow. Oh, poor you. Do you need the government to take care of you to? Need your gun loaded for you as well luv? It is hilarious but also sad that when you write you just wrote as though Illegal immigrants alone are responsible for all crime in your state. Jog on will ya. ; ]
Well Mowdy, you can say all you want that you don't have a party. But your visceral attack on the "righties" pretty much gives lie to that.
As for the money spent during Bush's administration (gosh won't you guys ever get over him) he is no different than all other presidents. He can't spend a dime on his own as I am sure you know. Congress, including many Democrats was required to appropriate all of the funds spent during those years. I am sure you are aware of the facts but sometimes they do get in the way of a good jab of course. If you want to have an honest discussion on the idealogical direction of our political process in this country, you could pull in your horns a bit. No president has ever had the power you would like to pin Bush with and neither does Obama. However, regardless of what you may think, or maybe you should even be happy about, this country has been sliding towards socialism for many years . And lately at a greatly accelerated pace. Entire books have been written by the hundreds documenting these facts. Your denial of it is futile. And cheers to you too.
Well miss 58, your a loon. I do hate to call people names but you act as though you are a paranoid, maybe delusional. How? By refuting what I told you to be true. The fact I have no party but you are unable to believe even that and you are in part what is wrong with the level of discourse. You know who you are like? Your like Kramer on Seinfeld. When Jerry tells him he doesn't want a junior mint and Kramer keeps telling him that he does to.. So come off it. You cant even trust the simple truth. I am sure we can all expect as much from the likes of you when it comes to complicated BIG words and stuff. ; ] So other then what I just told you jog on.
As for Bush not having the power I speak of? Hes the most power full man on earth our pres no matter who he is. He could have regulated, he could have been responsible as the pres should be by not allowing the FED to have his way all the time.. He wasn't. He could have warned the American people what was coming because it is fact that he knew. If you say he did not know you must then admit he was an incompetent. Because frank dodd and bernakke and paulson all reported to him. He could have went on T.V. and said to the people your up the creek in about a months time but he chose to shelter the criminals. Then ask us to give him sole control of the bailout he enacted in a socialist move to rig the tote. Dems stopped that. So I'm not having a conversation with a paranoid mental patient.... Next time you think everyone's lying to you think again. You'll probably tell yourself your wrong. Then right again. ;]
You know, as a commentary I must say this. It is irresponsible and disingenuous to act as though one is lying if they do not love the right. Or if they do not denounce both parties at the same time. The fact that this woman cannot even believe I have no party is telling in itself is it not? This vitriol that takes place when someone does not agree with republicans is lunacy period. We are all Americans like it or not and my guess is you do not like it. But what is more is the fact that any one of you believe you can be totally right or left. Your lying to yourself because as Humans none of us are perfect. We all differ in life and in politics. Know one can be honest with themselves and say republicans agree with me on every issue that comes up ever and the same for the left. But here we are with this insane group of extremest deliberately acting as though they are at war with there own countrymen. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. But I am sure that you are not. So SHAME on you.
It's interesting that there is no link whatsoever between the shooter and conservative causes, and yet all we see in the media are stories about how the "right wingers" are the ones that are somehow responsible for what happened.
I didn't see any such concern when the "left wingers" were calling for the killing or jailing of Bush or Cheney. I guess the media thought that was OK.
Mowdy, your "cheers" and "jog ons" are a little annoying. That kind of cockiness makes people (at least me) want to just dismiss what you are saying. There are problems with the left and the right. Thankfully, we are able to voice our opinions...all of the political spectrums can do so. Do not call names just because people question what you say...it isn't necessarily true just because you "say so". when your rhetoric keeps supporting the liberals and bashing conservatives, it is safe to draw the conclusion that you lean to the left.
Jersy...so the only people that are a problem, according to you, are people that moved to AZ, not anybody at all who is a native of that state...hmmmm, do you think this is part of the backwards thinking and DEVISIVNESS that people are talking about?
I'm from Georgia. We had a black kid that was our class president at my HS too. Guess that "proves" Georgia (of all states) doesn't have a racist/prejudiced past then either....Hmmmmmm not really great proof huh?
My sympathy to those mentioned in the story who are concerned with the direction Arizona started taking. The good news is that very often the anger and hurt gets misdirected by some in bad economic times but I suspect this mentality will be short lived when the economy picks up and fear and a reason to blame someone else is gone. Hang in there.
Far from being ashamed, I am quite proud to be an Arizonan and proud of the fact that Arizona is so divisive and so diverse...and so uniquely American.
I grew up back east, where I learned that diversity meant whites & blacks getting along and working & living together. Little did I imagine what life would be like in a state that used to be part of Mexico, but which also had one of the largest American Indian populations of any state, and which had such incredible natural diversity of geology and climate, that it has managed to this day to publish a popular monthly nature photography magazine, since just a few years after achieving statehood.
Little did I imagine what it would be like to live in the wild west of 2nd amendment fans, yet also work in the local high-tech industry that helped our nation explore the moon and also ushered in the microelectronics era that has so transformed all aspects of American society. Little did I imagine the wealth of experience I would gain by working with people from all over the world, from hearing on a regular basis languages like Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, German, French and Hindi (oh yes, and Spanish too...of course).
Yes, with great pride and enthusiasm, I accept that Arizona is the epicenter of divisiveness and diversity. Arizona historian Marshall Trimble says in the article, "We're a microcosm of the whole United States. We are you. We are everybody."
Trimble put it this way: "We're a microcosm of the whole United States. We are you. We are everybody."
He is right. The reputation Arizona has garnished is much like the reputation America holds in the eyes of the rest of the world.
It is true of America just as it is of Arizona that some fine, decent, compassionate, brave and generous people live there.
But overwhelmingly -- at least since the attempt to impeach Clinton -- it has appeared that the lunatics are running the asylum. (And I am not talking about the current President, although some of his 'advisors' certainly seem to qualify.
Let's hear it for sanity and for the return of reason.
I consider myself a native of both Utah and Arizona, as I spent equal time between both states throughout my childhood (divorced parents), with more time in AZ when I was very young, and more time in Utah as a teen.
I would have to say that we need to look at this in a broader context, the four corner states are notoriously divisive.
While I have to say (surprisingly), Utah is not as divisive as the other states, even in the context of liberals v. conservatives, Utah/Colorado/Arizona/New Mexico are much more politically divisive than the restof the nation. I would probably even add Texas and Nevada to that.
If you look at the following interactive map, you'll find that the growth of the tea party, while being relatively high on the east coast, it is shockingly apparent that in the areas of least population density have grown in tea party activity at a rate that matches or exceeds the areas that have the most dense population.
I'm truly embarrassed that the American southwest, the place I call home, is the source of so much vitriol.
My belief is that in areas of more dense population, please are raised in a more community setting, and understand better that in a community, we all expend a little bit of dissatisfaction in order to maintain peace with our neighbors. It is conceivable that in more broadly populated areas, people are not accustomed to these same traits/values, that rather they are somewhat xenophobic and self centered.
I think that the reason why Utah doesn't reflect these issues as much as other southwestern states is that due to the high Mormon population, the residents are generally more worldlyas a result of the incidence of religious missions. Whether or not you agree with or respect the conclusion that Utahns tend to be more worldly than other southwestern states, it is a matter of fact that even the most liberal of us in Salt Lake have better dialogue with conservatives than in most other places I have been.
Miss 5 your nothing more then a name caller. You should put fourth an idea but you did not. Also you should try to stay on topic not make it about me. More so than that you should uplift the level of discourse not lower it to your lowly level. When I call someone paranoid and delusional I have evidence to back my assertion up. Like the lady who called me a liar after I told her I do not belong to a party at all. Those kind of people are disturbed mentally refusing to believe a simple truth. You to are obviously unable to grasp the simplicity that people can have views from more then two sides and show distain for either or both parties. The reason KNOWONE should ever take anyone such as her or yourself seriously is because your unable to grasp that simple truth. Instead calling me a name as you have assuming I am not open to ideas at all. I say you are not. Not at all even capable of a cohesive on topic thought. ; ]
As for miss mama, you should really move on then. I do not need your two cents I did not ask for it. Your opinion is yours to have and I respect that. But I'm sure your mama told you if you don't have nothing nice to say ; ] State where I called anyone a name I dare you. Calling someone paranoid because they refuse to believe a personal truth I told about myself is more then a bit paranoid and I stand by that shes probably delusional. When you choose to question even the most simplistic truths your paranoid or delusional or both. Because you are unable to distinguish reality from fiction. So grow up and learn English and you will understand the difference between name calling and one that is deserved. I do not see you or any of your ilk taking her comment down for calling me a LIAR first do you? ; ]
The fact that YOU miss mama also question the TRUTH i just told YOU as well that I do not belong to any party is most disturbing . Do you assume to know me better than I know myself? I will say you to are paranoid and delusional because you refuse to accept what I tell you about myself. I NEVER said my word is god. But my word is when I speak of myself because I know me and weather or not I belong to dems or repubs which I do not, again because you to are obviously mentally ill thinking you know me better than I know myself.. Obviously you do not know this but are delusional enough to believe that you do and are paranoid enough to think I lie about myself . The word pathetic comes to mind when I think of you luv.
Isn't it also funny that all these people calling little ol me names still have there comments up. But I correctly describe miss 5 up there as the paranoid probably delusional type she obviously is and I'm the bad guy? She called me a liar as if to know personal info about me better than I know myself. I think not. That sounds quite delusional and paranoid to me. More so than that is this. This is the right at work. Censor this and censor that because they do not like it or are simply to stupid to read a whole post. You pick and let me know. It is a perfect example of what is wrong with this country. Are you really gonna be soooooooo hurt by the truth of my description you must have it removed while not applying equally this to other posts cause that is different then complaining about one party or another. Also if your going to believe AZ is not the cess pool of hate it is you better start controlling your bias now because that train left the station luv.
"Trimble put it this way: "We're a microcosm of the whole United States. We are you. We are everybody.""
You're certainly not me, and god, am I thankful for that.
If AZ is such a microcosm of America, why does such controversy always erupt there? Everything from MLK day, to daylight savings time, unregistered concealed firearms with no training, the New Minutemen, lost Super Bowl(s), laws specifically designed to profile Hispanics without actually saying so ("Show me your papers, amigo"), all the way up to the Mariners and Padres sharing one spring-training ballpark, I mean, what's up with THAT, huh?
Those sorts of anomalies could potentially crop up practically anywhere, that much is true. But they ALWAYS crop up in AZ. Gee, why is that? Because you're just like everyone else? Hardly. You're the WORST of everyone else, all in one place. You should be so proud. Unbelievable.
How self-centered can this journalist be than to turn a tragic situation about an obviously disturbed man killing 6 innocent people into a an argument over race...
I live in Arizona on the border in the Southeast corner of the state. In fact my house is exactly 6 blocks from the border fence. Because of this, my perspective may be somewhat different from those of you not from this state, but are quick to criticize. Except for 20 years spent in the service of my country I have lived in AZ all my life. Except for leftist liberal morons like the police chief in Tucson and a few others who are mostly from the large metropolitan areas where much of the crime occurs, those of us in rural areas get along fairly well. It is mostly the out of state media and liberal activist groups blowing many things out of proportion for their own gains and agendas! Living on the border, we have a fair number of home invasions and robberies, the majority of which are committed by illegal aliens and drug smugglers heading North from the border.I myself have been the victim of a home invasion by illegals! As a rule, I have no problem with the people of Mexico who come here as long as they do it legally and make the effort to integrate themselves into our society. The problem I have is with illegals who come here with their hands outstretched expecting all of the benefits that many of our own citizens and legal residents are entitled to and often cannot get. I spent 20 years in the service of my country and survived 2 wars. I love my state and my country, which I have shed my blood for, and I'll be damned if I will see the things that I have earned and worked for all my life be given away to those that do not deserve them or belong here.
Ctdad, I agree with you 100%. That article was not a true representation of Arizona. It was more about some people's distorted view of the realities. This was a sad tragedy committed by a lunatic nut case, no matter how one looks at it, and transcends any political views one may have had. The victims were all Americans!
Oh, and for those that think I may be being a tad harsh towards Hispanics? I am Hispanic and legal myself, as were the four generations of my family before me were!
@aquatone -- "You're the WORST of everyone else, all in one place. You should be so proud. Unbelievable."
I guess we are the worst of all the easterners, midwesterners, Californians, Mexican immigrants, and any other group of people that moved here from somewhere else -- which is the vast majority of our population. Or maybe it's not all the transplanted people from somewhere else that make Arizona what it is, maybe it's the native Arizonans -- 5th generation Mexican-Americans or Mormons or zillionth generation American Indians.
I agree with you on one thing -- you're not one of us. Thank God for that!
JERSY GIRL 1 - It's OK to criticize California for its financial state now, but you and others here should know how things got that way:
1. Since the passage in 1978 of the Jarvis-Gann Act, known commonly as Prop. 13, every taxing authority (special districts, school districts, cities, etc.) in the state has been sharply restricted in generating revenues. This was the result of a revolt against rising property tax rates, mainly, but it also used a meat-axe approach to all budgets and taxes. Consequently, not only has all public infrastructure deteriorated, financing to meet operating demands at every level has been inadequate.
2. "Social programs" in California are not really any more generous than most other states. It is a false argument to say such things have bankrupted California.
3. Interestingly, Jerry Brown is back as governor - and for the first time since he was last in office in 1978, a governor has dared to propose, and has the political strength to largely win legislative approval for, deep cuts in government spending.
Between 1978 and 2001, California's statte house was in the hands of Republican governors who were largely ineffective, and at times simply incompetent. Briefly, from 2001 to 2002, Democrat Gray Davis held the job, until the Enron-managed manipulation of state electrical supplies crafted a crisis that led to Davis' recall and election of moderate Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Due in part to decades-long legislative gridlock (Democras and Republicans are almost evenly split in legilsative office), Schwarenegger was repeatedly prevented from either seeking voter approval of tax changes, or from winning approval for sharply-reduced budgets. He resorted insead to borrowing and other measures to pay the bills, and handed Jerry Brown at least a $20 billion budget defecit that has to be addressed.
4. It is almost as certain as the Sun rising in the East that someone here is going to claim illegal immigrants burdening the state's social services account for California's budget crisis. That is false. Illegal immigrants present impacts on public spending primarily in two areas: elementary and secondary education, and emergency medical services for the poor or indigent. There is no welfare for illegal immigrants, no Social Security or Medicare, no low-cost housing grants and so forth.
Studies beginning in the 1970's under a Republican, conservative Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (and repeated in many venues since) show that illegal immigrants are reluctant to seek social services or other government assistance, for obvious reasons, but generate tax revenues for local and state coffers in excess of any cost burden created.
Likewise, although of course law enforcement expenses are affected by those crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, in general it is a canard that the majority of crime is committed by illegals. Naturally, in some areas with very high percentages of the population comprised of undocumented immigrants, there is a concomitant proportion of crime committed by them.
(Please do not bring up the argument, folk, that each and every illegal immigrant is already a criminal - besides being an absurd observation of the obvious, the argument confuses what is by law a relatively minor civil infraction with the more serious concerns of crimes against persons or property.)
In summary: California is in trouble now because for decades the state's ability to generate appropriate revenues has been hamstrung and prior state administrations have been passing the problem along to their successors. Now, with the state's economic problems diminishing business activity, personal incomes, and property values, all of which create tax revenues to fund local or state budgets, there's no avoiding the problem. But it is incorrect that over-regulation by the state or "liberal" and uncontrolled spending caused the problem.
Brilliant summarization, John A., and in many ways the failure of democracy in California mirrors a similar failure nationwide. Citizens cannot be depended upon to manage budgets responsibly or elect competent officials.
Heyyy, we here folks in Kentucky take issue wit you Arizonians trying to still our spotlight. With out being the capital of bigotry all we got left is our fried chicken. We have hated beaners and naggers longer than anyone. I demand that you teeth haven, GED holden, shower taken, outbred SOB's give us back our title, cuz we earned it!
Arizona ..you are not alone. Florida is just as bad if not worse. I am embarrassed to say that I live here as well.
There is one thing I would like to know though. Where is John McCain. Besides a small ticker on Sunday morning on CNN when expressed his sympathy for the families, I have not seen or not heard anything. I didn't see him during the memorial either.
I am really very surprised at his obvious silence throughout this whole thing.
John Mcain is doing what he should do. Shutup. this has nothing to do with him just as it has nothing to do with all those yapping about it. Like you Diane!!!!
He was at the memorial service last night. He sat in the second row behind Governor Brewer. I noticed that President Obama shunned him and did not shake his hand.
McCain, Kyl and other Republicans sat right behind and to the right of President Obama. McCain, from what I understand, has been out of the country this entire week. He sent his consolation about the shooting via satellite.
Thank you for saying it. All this media and political coverage, and no sign or word from the REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE! Not surprised though, after a black man was dragged from the back of a pick up truck in Texas,we heard nothing from the then Governor of that state, who is the current ex president of this country. Interesting that when an issue of this magnitude arises, we hear nothing from the righties!
Oh, you think conservatives want stuff like this to happen?
She was a conservative democrat. She probably wouldn't have even been a focus to unseat (through elections) if she hadn't gone along with a hideous healthscare bill.
We've sat and took it since FDR.
Throwing money at problems was OK when we had money to throw.
You think it's OK to make my kid pay for your Gov't "benefits"?
We give free cellphones to people on Gov't assistance now.
My child's future is looking dimmer for that?
The number one health problem our "poor" face is OBESITY.
So we are going to make my kid pay to keep our poor fat and happy?
Give me a break. We pay the taxes, you guys spend the money.
Change will only happen when we have a leader with credibility, character, humility and critical thinking skills leading this country, a congress and senate that have similar traits AND when the media learns basic journalism skills.
Next...we need to train our next generation to understand what it means to think before they speak, listen and then choose wisely about many of their life choices.
Selflessness is much more about maturity and selfishness about immaturity. Based on what I see on this board, the media and a lot of Americans...we still are a very immature country. I hope we grow up before we get schooled by someone else.
I suppose change means a leader you agree with--and no doubt, you'd then think the country VERY mature for electing that leader. (and this no doubt, passes for generational wisdom in your eyes.)
AP...with all due respect...you are making my point for me. You didn't ask me a single question, did not try to understand my point of view, nor did you apparently care to based on the sarcasm.
Getting back on point here... IMHO, AZ is not the "most divisive" state. The source of divisiveness seems to emanate out of Washington D.C. and largely infects all manor of people. As back in the late 60', and early 70's, socialist idealogues are stiring the pot ... again.
Sean, if you want people to respect your posts, do not call children losers or ugly or whatever. You lose credibility when you turn to emotional rants.
Jersey girl: you are mistaken. It was the other way around. John McCain turned away from the President. I saw it myself. He walked away as the President approached him. It is not apparent why this happened. That is part of the problem here. Everyone needs to be truthful and stop demonizing the other side.
The hate isn't in AZ. It's on hardball. Sarah Palin and her family are receiving death threats. How's that make you feel Matthews. The president asked you to stop. You say no. If anything happens, you'll be the one that put a target on her. Is that irony or what. Pat Buchanan asked you to stop, but, as usual you're the smart one in the room. Why can't we all just agree with you? You are wrong, that's, why.
Mr Wadsworth, I suppose Ms Palin,Glen Beck,Hannity, etc are just peaceful loving folks who are the victims of the pundits and the media!!!
How naive and blind can you be!!!
jean, please list the death threats, advocations of violent revolution or suggestions of armed reprisals against political opposition issued by Palin, Glen Beck and Hannity; please be sure that you are citing literal statements and not metaphors. Give full details, and list the web pages where we all can study them.
If you cannot do this, then please rephrase your innuendo more accurately.
Ryan - What foolishness - Oswald was an agent of the US government - previously in the military,m trained by the US military in the Russian language, an FBI plant working with CIA operatives. He was sent to Russia - allowed to live there during the height of the cold war, and the US government welcomed him and hs Russian wife back to the USA to do what?????
That man was no more a communist than you are Ryan. A flag-waving undercover small guy who was used as a patsy....and realized it too late. Oh PLEASE - don't tell ridiculous stories.....
So much misinformaitons found on the internet....amazing how many will believe certain story lines because they make them feel better - not because they are true.
Looking for affirmations, not information. Sheeesh....
Palin is lying she is always trying to play the victim. If she were caught standing over an old lady after shooting her 10 times she would say she made me do it. The woman has no intelligence or shame. Please elect her your 2012 presidential rep., please!
You see what you want see and you turn a blind eye at anything that contradicts you. Matthews hasn't placed any cross hairs on Palin....get a grip and try for a little more balance. There are lunatics with all sorts of stripes but the GOP and the Prophets of Greed and Tea Baggers are the ones who have structured and institutionalized hate and bigotry.
You are silly do you ever hear people on hardball or any democrat leaders saying its time to put the stones down and use your second ammendment rights is he putting gun sights on her? No hes not if she is getting death threats it is from people on their own free will because Democrat leaders are not using violent, racist and ignorant redorick like Sarah Palin and the rest of the tea party. Here is an example if you have a daughter or a son and some one doesnt agree with them and that person that doesnt agree with them starts telling other people that they should not use stones against her but rather use your second amendment rights against her or starts putting up posters of her with crosshairs targeting her, and telling people its time to get back to the old west style of handling problems, and so much more violent sayings and then one day she gets shot and killed are you not going to question or think that maybe all the violent talk had something to do with it. because all it takes is one crazy person to listen to the violent redorick and act on it.
I generally don't watch much tv but if I did I don't think I'd watch people I hate as much as you people same to hate those espousing opposite viewpoints of your own. I don't get why Dems want to talk about Beck, Rush, Hannity etc or Repubs talk Matthews, Olberman (who I still can't see as anything but a Sportscenter guy with a Political opinion show) etc. Those guys make money talking $hit. That's how they make their living and it is their #1 priority. If you really want to get somewhere talking to "the other side" on places like this I'd leave those a$$holes out of it ya know
No, Arizona is the epicenter of a foreign invasion of our country, that our government flat-out refuses to deal with. The frustration among rightful Americans can only go so far before it boils over. And boil over it will. Do any of you remember how this country was founded? How it was expanded and consolidated? How many wars we have fought? Do you really think that violence is off the table? We need to prevent violence before it happens. We need to address issues before they boil over, even if powerful lobbying groups want a never-ending supply of poor, abused, wage-slaves to increase their profits and executive bonuses. Our current situation is not sustainable. Read history for the outcome.
And Sheriff Dupnik isn't helping down there. He said that he would not enforce AZ 1070. He stirs up the hatred both inside AZ and makes it's citizens look like ignorant bigots to the rest of the world. He's the one pushing the hate agenda.
perhaps, if Arizona residents stopped illegally hiring the illegals to do their house cleaning and gardening, the problem would also stop... As long as you keep offering them a job, they will keep coming over the boarder...
Had to repost, as "the community" <read: Democrats> are collapsing certain threads.
What people don't understand is that Arizona isn't necessarily the destination of the illegals. Many of them keep on going to other states where conditions are friendlier to them. What does happen is that while they are passing through they don't care about what they do here. Our desert areas are being trashed. Some of those areas are irreplaceable. It's not safe for someone to go to Organ Pipe National Park, you don't know when you are going to run into a trigger happy "coyote".
How would you feel if you were driving on the freeway and end up in the middle of a police chase? Another truck full of illegals hidden under plywood or a van packed so tight with humans that they can't move. When they finally either crash or pull over, the people that survive often have to be chased down.
Then there is the financial cost. Hospitals near the border have closed their doors because they can no longer afford to continue giving care to the illegals passing through their emergency rooms. The kidnappings often involve coyotes kidnapping a family member of one of their "shipment" in order to get more money. Our police departments can't ignore them, they have to spend the money and time to solve the crime. A crime that would not have happened without the illegal tie-in. Our schools are filled with the children of the illegals that stay. We aren't allowed to even ask them or their parents about their legal status, the schools, like the hospitals would lose valuable federal funds if we did. Funds our taxes contributed to.
Someone mentioned the numbers of self deportation have risen. Of course it has. Many of the illegals got the message of the anti-ILLEGAL-immigration law. Notice in the article it's called the anti-immigration law, that's a big difference and just feeds into the wrong perception that Arizonan's are all bigots.
Yes, we have some relaxed gun laws. Not all of us agree with the more relaxed concealed carry laws. I think the safety training that applied to the old law should be put into place for all gun purchases. We also have some legislators that have gone overboard, in both directions. Don't forget that Rep. Grijalva cared so little for his hard working constituents that he was championing the boycotts against Arizona. We also have a pretty firm reputation for removing politicians from office when they turn out to be less than they should be. We don't shoot them, we just impeach them.
I was 17 when my family moved to Arizona. I had grown up in a small town in the Midwest that was 100% white until right before we moved. I spent my Senior year out here in a school filled with people of all races and ethnic groups and I loved every minute of it. The diversity of cultures was wonderful. That diversity is still wonderful to me.
My state has a beautiful diverse geography also. How many other states can claim that within a couple of hours drive you can find desert, lakes, rivers, mountains and the two biggest holes in the earth, the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater. We have the Red Rocks of Sedona, and the pillars of Monument Valley. The Painted Rocks and the Petrified Forest. We've even got the Kartchner Caverns. The only thing we don't have (yet :-0) is an ocean front.
Yesterday there were comments on the strangeness of the Native Blessing that was given at the start of the Memorial. It wasn't strange to us. Plus, the rest of the country can thank Arizonans for their Native run casinos. One of our many tribes were the first and they were the ones that fought the government to keep that casino and allow other tribes throughout America to open their own.
We have our problems, just like every other state does. We also have a lot of wonderful people that live in this state, just like every other state does.
I forgot to mention that the great Cesar Chavez was very outspoken about being against illegal immigration. He championed for immigration reform and increasing the guest worker programs.
Yes, I know how this country was founded. White people killed Native Americas, stole their land and enslaved Africans. Is this what you are talking about. TX, AZ, NM and CA were all part of Mexico before the white man stole it. I take it that this is what you are referring to!! Am I right???
Yes, we do have a lot of legal hispanics here in AZ. That's interesting that you should notice. Legal hispanics also work in a lot of our restaurants, car washes, liquor stores... They also are part of our government, run big corporations, teach in school etc. They are an important part of our state. They significantly add to our amazing and unique culture.
Mr. D – A white man stole TX, AZ, NM and CA? He must have been caught on surveillance at a convenience store along the way so we will find him.
Meanwhile, Mexico ‘claimed’ those lands for approximately 25 years, starting 190 years ago. Are you nostalgic just for that period or does some of the Spanish Empire before it sneak in?
I dont know who the lame brain is that wrote this article but, just asking this question and then trying to find reasons to justify it is divisive. As a matter of fact it is indicitive of the mass histeria the media is capitalizing on and lack of integrety the media has shown. This country would be a much better place without the ambulance chasing so called journalists and talking heads that are only out there to make money on peoples suffering. Shame on you all and God save you all from the fate you perpetrate on all Americans
This is not news. It is meant to stir controversy and stir prejudice against our great state by those who are naive enough to believe anything they read.
And, again, who is it that is stiring the pot here? MSNBC, or US & World News ...huh? Shall we shut them down? Screw the 1st amendment??? What say you who are so quick slam Ms. Palin?
oops, sorry, I didn't mean to use that word.... watch your metaphors.
No, it's the only state that tries to take a stand on issues that not popular with the minority special interest groups? Because they're not in lock-step with the rest of the union, it's called divisive. I wish more states were divisive....we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.
I agree with you, TenAngryHamsters. I think you hit the nail right on the head, there. Intolerance is a cancer that is eating away at our nation. I'm not sure if Arizona is the genesis of the cancer or not, but it has metastasized and spread throughout our great country. It's very distressing. If we could keep in mind that we're all human beings, with basic human rights extended to everyone, not just those who think they deserve it more than the next person, perhaps we could make some progress. Perhaps we can eradicate this hateful cancer.
I'm a proud American. I love my country. I support my president. I believe in humanity and fairness. The current climate of hate will not change any of that. I will persevere. I will continue to stand up for those less fortunate than I. I hope that I'm not in the minority with my stance on the issue, but if I am, so be it. These are the values I cherish and, as a nation, I believe these values are our foundation and what makes our country great.
JA - What a crock. I used to vacation in Arizona. Now, somehow, it seems to be filled with people like you. The closet I want to come to it is to fly over it and I'm worried that one of your brethren will have a surface to air missile; I'm sure the right to carry those is right around the corner. If this is the direction the country is going, I need a new country. Have fun with that one. It doesn't mean I don't love my country, it means I am learning that a significant number of my fellow Americans are cretins.
Your tolerance of common thieves(yes, illegals are stealing from your country by taking advantage of your law and services)will prove that not only are you and many others are lax in knowing right from wrong, but would give the house you live in away to those who could care less if they trashed the place. The country is going to the dogs, and they include all those who continue to take, and never once give anything back. Can you spell entitlement?Earned income credit, welfare, food stamps, medicaid, free this, free that. When will we draw the line? And many of you hate people with money!Shall we all be poor?We soon will be.Economics 101.
Since the "mess we're in" comes directly from business policy, and since the country, including the states, towns, and villages are for the most part run by business, how do you think more divisive and intolerant states are going to get us out of it?
Ditto! Arizona has the balls to do what needs to be done...look at the rest of the states as well - over spent on programs that nobody ever considered how they were going to pay for - plus if this muder had happened in any other state everyone would be saying the same thing about that state...and soon this will all die away as well and nobody - not the populace and certainly not the politicians will have done a damn thing to change it.
I couldn't agree more. How is it that being upset abour foreigners sneaking ILLEGALLY across your border with guns, drugs, and who-knows-what else makes somebody "divisive" or "intolerant." The people of Arizona have every right to be upset. They have every right to protect their borders and their property.
Yet, that has NOTHING to do with this shooting! Hello! Loughner is nuts! Quit trying to paint him as anything but a lunatic. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE that his motives were political. Let it go and quit trying to make it something it's not.
I beleave Faith, Hope and Charity are values we must keep, I'm American and I also believe in the rule of law. Allow to come illegal immigrants and provide rights and benefits granted for legal immigrants and Citizens only destroy the structures of our government at all levels, and this must go to an end. Intolerant is not to apply the Law, hate is not what lead to the control of our borders, fairness is not give to an illegal immigrant the same right than legal immigrants. Arizona is a great State but is being divided for politics that want to use issue of immigration to gain the Latino vote.
Intolerant of what? How ridiculous. They are intolerant because they have hundreds of thousands of people in their state that are here ILLEGALLY? Because the federal government does nothing about it? Because Arizona is trying to protect itself and it citizens? The feds turn their heads? Because it costs hundreds of millions of dollars for their healthcare? Because of the increased crime rate, murders, kidnappings, etc? Should we be tolerant when someone murders, rapes, molests, etc. just because it is divisive? Bottom line is that there is no divisiveness on Arizona's part. The divisiveness is created by the federal government doing nothing about the illegal immigrants and the problems that come with it? The divisiveness by minorities trying to justify illegal immigration?
Texas is a right to work state and very few unions and why is it in dire straights with a 27 billion debt...being a very red state who do you think hiresillegals? I can think of only one mass murderer that is Hispanic the rest are Caucasian
I would say Arizona's greatest problem is they have an ignorant Governor who dances to the loud shouts of radicals and has failed time and time again to lead the State.
Before it was undocumented workers, it was protest of the Federally approved MLK holiday, before that it was the native Americans.
If the federal government had done it's job of securing Arizona's border, Arizona wouldn't have the problem of being over ran by illegals bringing their drugs and drug cartel into the state. Arizona wouldn't have the problem of rapists, kidnappers and murderers it does now. So if MSN wants to point a finger, point it in the direction of the federal government who has failed miserably in protecting a wonderful state with wonderful people.
How far as Sheriff Dupnik, he is treading on very thin ice with voters for the crap he has pulled this last week. He has put himself squarely in the middle of causing divisiveness. Making comments without facts is not what a person of his position should be doing.
Illegals are not responsible for all kiddnapping and murders, or child molestations for that matter. Are you insane? oh no wait just racist.
Whether illegals are in the country or not there has been and always will be a problem with murder, kiddnappings and child molestations. connecting the two is very racist! most illegals come to this country to work, and are good people. your statement of ignorance and fear are part of the problem. When i lived in AZ i had never seen so much racism in my life, from everyone. it was ridiculous. there were people that would threaten me because i would talk to all races. again ridiculous.
However, there were also some very nice people (again of all races) that helped other people in need. Az is that only place that i have ever been that daily people would help someone else.
So get your facts straight and go outside. look around you. talk to people. observe first hand before you go spouting complete falsehoods.
Also, just so you know most child molesters are caucasian according to statistics.
Go look up the First bill in the US to give Amnesty to Illegals... It was in 1986... It was a Republican President Ronald Reagan... and both houses passed the BILL with a Majority of Republicans pushing it over the TOP...
and in 1965, when I was in my Kindergarten class, I looked next to me and Mike was my friend... He was a Illegal Immigrant...
So when did you say your Borders were Secure???? They have NEVER BEEN CLOSED.....
I believe Jersey did say,"If the Federal Government has done its job..." We know they have never been closed. That's why we've been asking over and over for some actual protection and support. Where has it been? You are just helping to prove the point that AZ has had to finally step up and protect itself.
neenee you are right. Illegals do not commit all the crimes. But, they are by far responsible for the majority of kidnappings and play a larger role than you let on for other murders, rapes, etc. If you get rid of the illegals, you reduce the crime rate. Reduce the amount of dollars spent on medical and other benefits that others have to pay for. Jersye girl. 100 % correct.
I see your point as well, i really do. I lived there. However, illegals do not get gov benefits. They can't without green card or other type of doc.
Also, many of the kiddnappings where illegal gang members were involved was usually against other illegals, i would see it on the news. The system is broken that is for sure and i agree with that 100%. I just also think that we need to be very careful labelling all people a certain way because of a bad few. I know that there are mexican gangs and cartels there but not all illegals belong to them or want to.
we have to quit subscribing to the fear and anger, that this group is to blame for all our troubles when that just isn't the case. It's a smokescreen for other much larger issues. We all need to work TOGETHER to fix the system and solve problems, not blame each other and cause more strife.
"However, illegals do not get gov benefits. They can't without green card or other type of doc".
Not true. If that were the case then please explain why illegals are at every supermarket with WIC cards in hand. Also an illegal can not get SNAP however if they have a kid here, the kid is eligible for all the entitlements hence the illegal is allowed to file and draw those entitlements to "provide for their legal citizen" baby.
You got me there. your right. however, not every latin american that doesn't speak english is illegal either. i have been in the line (food stamps) and watched a lady not only get to the front but got a card immedialtely when i had to prove everything and wait. This was a few years ago and we almost rioted over that one.
Arizona? No, it's the State controlled media and liberal ranting pit now ordained by leftists, liberals and democrats as the epicenter of written and verbal attacks dividing this country. Let's not forget the words used to describe former President Bush and his cabinet. Violence will befall all Americans, but let not this fear keep us from protecting our liberties and freedom.
What an idiotic post. "Violence wil befall all Americans?" I'm a moderate liberal. I don't condemn all conservatives as you are doing with liberals. Just the really stupid ones. Like you. And the nucases on the extreme left.
How Come Sheriff Dupnik's county has a higher crime rate especially murder and assault than Sheriff Aprio's county? Arizona has had a large drug cartel problem that has spilled over into that state and in 2009 Pheonix was the kidnip capital of the US.
If Jared was Liberal he would have mugged all those people and given the money to poor people. Instead he was Conservative so he shot them.
Conservatives are selfish little oafs. Arizona can't survive w/o free money from the Federal government which is taken from...CA, CT, NY, NJ, MA...all Liberal states.
It's OK. We know that bigots can't hack capitalism and I don't mind helping out my less-capable countrymen...but please stop insulting me as you pick my pocket.
What a left wing loon of an article. Arizona is a great state. We beautiful deserts, mountains and forests all within driving distance and great people too. Thie article doesn't reflect Arizona at all, it reflects her liberal opinion of it.
I wonder if she wrote something similar about New Orleans after Katrina? Of course not, they're democrats in NO. What a slanted piece of trash this article is. And PVperson, you don't know what you're talking about. "You Zonies have made your cesspool, may you all drown in it." Sounds to me like you're just another bitter liberal. maybe that's why you didn't like AZ, we don't agree with ridiculous liberal entitlement mentality.
Arizona streets are all redone beautifully, and it's very clean, with beautiful weather right now. YES 8 MONTHS OF GREAT WEATHER IS NOT TOO BAD!!! SUMMER IS SEDONA TIME!!!
I so agree! AZ is a beautiful State! And in reality, the people who live here are good people. All of us were saddened and mortified by the actions of one lone gunman. We the people of Arizona came together in the tragedy regardless of political affiliation! But yet, in the news, the divisions are glaring as the mud slinging continues. I love Arizona with all of its flaws and accomplishments... and I love the people who live here.
If I may, a single observation. Arizona is a wonderful beautiful state populated by some of the nicest people anywhere. I can make that statement almost universally about any of the states and their inhabitants and include another thought which is that there are crazies in all of them not just Arizona! The media has a nasty tendency of vilifying everybody for the sake of their bottom lines since they too are for profit motivated which takes away the supposed 4th Estate objectivity which they knowingly traded away for money! Walter Cronkite must be spinning like a top.
In critical management there is a saying. If you are not a part of the solution to a problem, then you are part of the problem.
There is a second saying. You cannot solve a problem until you identify the real problem.
Government never seems to solve the problems, and actually often makes the problem worse. Clearly, government doesn't really identify the problem. Because in government's opinion - government is not the problem.
MSNBC is just as guilty at promoting hate. This morning on "Morning Joe" as they discussed the anger in the media; MSNBC ran an promo for the State of the Union showing clips of ONLY Democratic Presidents (yes even Jimmy Carter) from JFK to Obama. MSNBC is hipocracy.
Nonsense. Blaming Fox viewers for this does not make sense. You might also blame anyone who salutes the American flag that the shooter hates. Now that is real hate.
This is so sad, it is hard to believe that Diane has the ability to use the computer. She should be thankful for FOX news, the only network to report the facts and get it right.
They are not Number ONE because no one is watching them.
Anybody like you Diane R has no right criticizing something unless you have actually seen it. I can criticize MSNBC because I have seen it on occasion (not always by choice, I must say). I can criticize CNN and FOX as well, since I watch both (Except for Behar. I can find no credence in anything she or her counterpart on MSNBC, Olbermann, say or report.) Even FOX ticks me off when they have Beckel or Juan Williams on. But they do attempt to give the liberal view even though the Liberals only have the "stock" repartes handed out by their "leaders."
I do not "hate" anyone or anything. I will say nothing "hateful" about another person, political party, creed, or ideas. I might call them stupid, bizarre, or just plain wrong, but I don't "hate" like you, Diane R.
People like you need to grow up and realize that it is your accusations and rhetoric that cause guys like Loughner to go off. You accuse Republicans yet commit the same "crimes" you accuse them of committing.
boomer i agree, we all have to grow up, (myself included in my past rantings), and start RESPECTING each other. here online with our comments as well. enough is enough. this is all fuel for the fire. this hate is unproductive and gets no one anywhere. our polliticians and candidates also have to do the same thing and act like professionals, which means behaving and acting appropriately. we also need to educate ourselves how our civil municipalities and states work. we each have our own state constitiutions, our own state laws. that's a sensible place to start. we need a whole new breed of intelligent political candidates who aren't self absorbed and only care about self interest support, but who are civil minded. this isn't a hate contest of who wins. fueled by hate, we all lose. cavilier put it best. let's have a couple of drinks, and get back to being our normal, fun loving selves. our ranting online doesn't do anything, but make us hate. and who even reads it. twelve people maybe? seriously. time to grow up.
Diane, what hate? Please let us know. It is pretty easy to say this and not back anything up, which you did. It is always ok for the liberals to stand in front of the cameras and call people that do not agree with them murderers, etc. This happens time after time after time. The liberals spew so much more hate and divisiveness in the country than the conservatives. Why? Because the liberal media let's the liberals get away with it. If a conservative said the same things that liberals do, they would be crucified. Any one that can not see tihs needs glasses and their heads examined. Liberals and not Arizona causes the divisiveness.
Why does the "rightwing trollpack" have lots of time to focus their hate? I only wish I was an intelligent as you, since the criteria "intelligence" must be agreeing with YOU!!!! Who is focusing "their hate", now?
Isn't this article about prejudice against Arizonans? "Those people" think this way, or act this way.... As if everyone in Arizona thinks, looks and acts the same.
And isn't that exactly the kind of thinking that the article purportedly attributes to Arizonans?
Arizonans are just like everyone else, with all the good and bad that imports. In fact, we are everyone else, because the vast majority of the state's population came from other states. I can assure you, notwithstanding the goofy purported quotes, Arizonans are not too worried about what the rest of the country thinks. Perhaps that is our greatest strength.
We also don't spend a lot of time believing what the media says about New Yorkers, or people from California, or New Jersey, or Alabama. I suspect the vast majority of those folks are no more obnoxious, crazy, stupid or uneducated than the rest of us, notwithstanding what those who want to reduce an entire population to a few adjectiives would have us believe.
You hit the nail on the head. I, too, am an Arizonan. Born and raised in the Phoenix area. My parents came here back in the 1980's from the cornfields of Iowa.
My personal beliefs on the issues in the article are that yes I do support the so-called "anti-immigration" legislation. But as another user put it, the correct name for it is anti-illegal immigration legislation. Illegal immigration are the two key words. Now I have heard that our local law enforcement may not be enforcing the law correctly and that's where the hate comments are coming from. But even then, that's not the fault of the politicians. It's corruption in our law enforcement which something should be done about. Do you know why I really want the illegal immigrants gone? So that US Citizens like myself can get a job. The illegal immigrants are taking all the jobs that take no skill and it has left me unemployed for over a year. It will help us get out of the recession if they leave.
Daylight savings time. I don't even know why it's observed by the other 49 states. Daylight savings served as a tool for farmers to give them an extra hour of daytime to farm during the summer months up until harvest. It can still be useful in states like Iowa that have farms predominantly throughout the state, but Arizona never had a need for daylight savings...especially with 115 to 120 degree days during the summer.
Like the poster said before me, we don't listen to the media when they trash-talk our fellow Americans from other states. I choose to form my own opinions. I've met some really cool Californians and some that I didn't like too much. Just because we live in Arizona doesn't mean we all look the same and think the same. Most Arizonans are actually really friendly, kind, and we love to have fun. That's the character you can expect from the wild west.
Personally, I prefer the Arizona of pre-conservatives extremists. By that, I mean today's conservatives, and not respectable statesmen like Barry Goldwater and president Eisenhower.
When AZ. had homegrown Democrats in office, there was no chance a piece of racist trash like SB 1070 would be introduced in the legislature. There was no chance our institutions would be given away to private corporations, like our prisons and state parks have been.
And there was absloutely no chance an ugly hateful import like Jan Brewer would be governor.
I really miss the old Arizona. A much nicer, more civilized place.
I have to say all the news out of Arizona these days makes me so sad. Eight years ago, I relocated to Texas after living in Arizona for 25 years, and the level of bigotry and venom displayed toward Democrats and people of color here really surprised me. I'd been used to an environment that welcomed cultural diversity for so many years in AZ, I thought it was that way everywhere. All the news coming from my home state these days sounds so much like the talk that so surprised me at first when I moved here.....
My wife serves in an elected office with the Texas Democratic Party. I fear for her safety daily in our county. Seriously.
Politically I stand far to the right of my wife. To see the treatment she endures in this state is disgusting and frightening. I find it very challenging to foresee the circumstances under which I might vote for another Republican, having seen their true colors here.
It seems quite evident to me that we are marching headlong to civil war.
The news you're getting out of AZ these days is twisted out of proportion. The shooting was a tragedy but his actions were his own. The left media paiints AZ as some place evil because they don't agree with our stand against illegal immigration. It's sad what the press ahs done to us really. I'm a conservative republican but that doesn't mean I'm a racist like this article would like you to think.
Cavalier a lot can change in eight years; look how much has changed in the last two; Jack mack is predicting another civil war, and America is mad! I suspect he's right!
One person's experience does not mean that is what everyone experiences. Arizona always seems to be somehow linked in the news and often times not always for the best reasons. However, Arizona does try to take actions when necessary. For instance, that church group that announced its plans to protest the funeral to the 9 year old little girl? What did Arizona do? Didn't quash the groups rights to free speech, instead passed legislation to keep any and all protests a certain distance away from funerals to make sure the rights of the families grieving have their rights to grieve in peace. As far as I can see, this legislation most people applauded and wished their own states did the same. Arizona may not always make legislative decision that the country agrees with, but at least they try to do something.
it's so funny how the minute someone like this author even questions whether Arizona has become the epicenter of divisiveness, the right-wingers start screaming about what idiots we all are for taking pause at how out of control the state seems to be getting. or it's the federal government's fault. it's always someone else's fault with these people. they talk a lot about personal responsibility, but have a real hard time looking themselves in the mirror and wondering if they might be part of the problem.
Dan, he's talking about the mexicans...lots and lots of mexicans.
Arizona is just having a political tantrum because brown people are overtaking the population. Arizona's legislators don't like that. We all know that Russell Pearce hangs with Neo-Nazis.
I could not agree with you more. The right complain but continue the tirade of injustice against people of color, homosexuals, etc. What I find so amazing is this same group of people claim to be "Christians". To me the two don't go together. I hear it day after day from people who I work with who claim to be conservatives continue to voice their vicious rhetoric - I am sorry whether or not they believe it, you cannot turn your back on the poor, you cannot turn off the civil rights of people who are different than you and you certainly cannot turn your back on people of color. What saddens me most is so many upper middle class people who are so afraid that their status will be somehow altered if they care for those in need are so willing to send to turn their backs on our fellow Americans..
Arizona's problem with illegals has nothing to do with their skin color. Lot's of the Americam born Hispanics are also upset about illegals, as are a number of the Native Americans whose lands are trespassed and trashed on a regular basis by illegals passing through. Most of us are not really all that concerned about poor people just looking for a better place to live. But, whole areas of the state, reaching almost to Phoenix, have warnings against hiking or hunting because of the dangers of drug smugglers. People in small communities and ranchers and farmers along their path deal with constant vandalism. And those drug smugglers are very well armed. And yes, the border problem is the federal government's fault, states are not authorized to police and defend international borders.
This article, and a number of others was very misleading about Arizona gun laws. Yes, Arizona does allow concealed weapons, but that has absolutely nothing to do with how Loughner was able to purchase a gun and ammo. He passed the federal background check (used in all states including Arizona) because no one had bothered to put any past legal problems (like the drugs) into the databases. The background checks are only as the databases they use.
Arizona's decision to enforce the law as to ILLEGAL immigration is absolutely appropriate. The U.S. Government is required to protect AMERICAN CITIZENS and LEGAL IMMIGRANTS who honored the rule of law in their immigration. The U.S. Government has FAILED TO DO ITS JOB, and Arizona stepped up to do the right thing and to protect its people.
Arizonans, like most other Americans WELCOME IMMIGRANTS --- LEGAL IMMIGRANTS! Enforce U.S. immigration law NOW!
What is it with the paranoid Right? Everything is against them. Somehow, I am getting the feeling that the Fascist Right will never be truly happy until they are able to purge the country of all opposition. Maybe send all the Liberals to the gas chambers. They just don't seem to be happy with a two party system.
Ok, give the right a break, they're feeling very defensive just now. In the face of so many saying, "please tone it down or something will happen," something happened, and they are trying very hard to justify this to themselves. The shooting may not have had anything to do with what the right keeps saying, but I suspect that, deep down, in that place under all the denial, they wonder if it did. Thus, the extremely defensive rhetoric now. Soon, they'll all have a few drinks, make some slurs, and be back to their "normal" fun-loving selves.
UncleKrunk, because most Americans disagree. People are sick and tired of this crap. The article itself is not not news, it is an opinion and the side the author is on. The media has gotten away from reporting the news. It now creates it and sensationalizes it.
I don't think Arizona is the center of devisiveness. I think Arizona is a perfect example of what every state, in time, will become if all three branches of the United States government aren't called onto the carpet for refusing to lawfully abide by the agreement that created it. No state, regardless of viability, can continue to function when the common sense rules that control it's immigration are abandoned in favor of a employer-sponsored free-for-all.
A nation without an enforced border is not a nation, it's Somalia, the Barbary Coast, Russia, or, now, drug-controlled Mexico. We entrusted our survival with people who didn't respect that trust and they sold us out to their wealthy global employer 'friends'. The chaos will continue to spread in Arizona and every other state until we take whatever action is necessary to force our Federal representatives to abide by the rules that were set in place over two hundred years ago. Until we do, look for more Ghostbusters-type phenomena in every state in the union to continue and escalate. This isn't Kansas anymore and if we continue to let our fiduciaries rip us off down to our socks, Kansas will never come back.
You've made a good point that the issue driving illegal immigration, really, is employers. It seems quite clear to me that no serious effort to enforce immigration law could stand up to a challenge by the hotel & restaurant lobby or to other industry groups that do so much business on the back of this endless source of cheap, easily exploited labor.
No, the problem is Americans need to vote in politicians who believe we should secure our borders, if they are opposed to securing our Nation at the borders vote for someone else.
Americans we are ultimately responsible, stop voting in Democrats or Republicans who feel the border is of no concern. Both Dems and Reps have those who could care less about the safety of our families on the border States Wake Up and Vote.
Well, MSNBC and AP are grinding real hard to stir controversy. I'm beginning to think that the media is the menace. I watch Obama's speech then see Matthews stirring the pot with glee, kind of like someone who doesn't give a damn that he's creating a climate of hate, ditto Schultz and the rest of the folks. They can't give it a rest, show respect for the dead, no, they have to continue to fan the flames, guess they think that'll improve their ratings although it seems they just further incite the folks who follow them anyways, no new viewers with a brain, just the same old, same old...
Been there I agree with you; I rode through Kansas on the way to Sturgis in August, and Dorothy is definitly mexican, and ToTo is damn sure a Chihuahua!
Illegals swim 60 miles across a shark infested ocean to enter the U.S. Tell me more about how you propose to secure those borders and stop illegal entry and what your next plan will be when you find out those mile high walls and depletion of all your manpower and money never slowed them down a bit. In order to actually slow them down, they need a reason from their own countries to want to be there and feel safe raising their families first.
Sadly if there a coupld dozen of them killed to set an example; the rest would pay attention; send the ones here back, and let them clean up their own mess instead of adding to ours! Sounds hatefull; but with sufficient notice the choice would be theirs!! I'm not sure what 60 miles swim your talking about!
Oh boy, could we sink any lower? are manners and civil discourse truly a thing of the past? By the way UncleKrunk, Canada is doing quite well, much better than we are doing. They are financially strong and have a relatively low crime rate.
"Tea baggers" "leffties" "right-wing nut cases" wow- is this what we are now? Do you think we can ever get back to having really thoughtful discussions about what is best for the country rather than ranting and raging about everything- and without violence ensuing when a difference of opinion is expressed?
Sorry to disagree with you Jackie but the company I work for owns Canadian interests as well and I travel there all the time. They do have crime, unemployment, etc....
Uncle Krunk: The point is this you must not be a dog owner as I have never had a dog that eats his own"". I can read, but I also like to challenge ignorant arguments. So are you seeing me through a looking glass? As you dont know me and just calling me a socialist shows either a great psychic power or your complete ignorance.
UncleKrunk, you are such a misguided liberal. The tea party is not for anything you have said. They are pretty much tired of being "Taxed Enough Already" and our constitution. When officials take an oath and are sworn in, it is an oath to defend the constitution. The problem is that most liberals do not want to defend the constitution. If they had their way, it would be thrown out the window. How misinformed and misguided liberals like you are.
How is it that MSNBC can publish this stuff still. How can they so blatantly take advantage of the events in Arizona to preach their anti-right rhetoric? We now know that the guy had no interest in right-wing ideas. If anything, a friend of the shooter is now suggesting that it was his interest in the "Zeitgeist" movement that was most troubling... sounds more extreme left than extreme right.
You all want a perfect example of divisiveness? How about the murderer Loughner? The liberals and the liberal new media was blaming the conservatives almost at the get go. The conservatives had nothing to do with this and Loughner did not get the idea from any of them. But, again, you liberals and liberal media create the divisiveness by trying to put the blame on conservatives.
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik is an idiot. He needs to stick to the facts, do his job, and keep his personal political views, opinions and beliefs to himself.
AMEN!!!
Diptsick Dupnick is the epicenter of idiocy. That's the only thing Arizona is known for. More left-wing drivel from PMSNBC
As a law enforcement officer, Sheriff Dubnik has more information, experience and right to comment on this matter than any of us.
Oh yeah, Jackie, I forgot, no one but a far left wing liberal has a brain.
Field:

Funny, I thought the left likes "diversity".
@JERSY GIRL 1 - I would wager that if he was a republican, that you and others here wouldn't be complaining about him, no matter what he said. Yeah.. we'll see at re-election won't we?
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik is a hero and a patriot. I salute him for the straight talk everyone needed to hear.
The Sheriff was defying Arizona state law, sounds more like a criminal or an anarchist to me.
How is it a Sheriff "Announces" which state laws he will enforce?
you know it is a statistical fact that liberals score an average of 7 points higher on IQ tests.

And that - is for starters.
Let's just put it this way, even though America was shocked at the assassination attempt, nobody is the least bit surprised that when it did happen, it happened in Arizona. The ultra-right here are exceptionally unspooled and violent, and with them in charge of our state's government, it really is like the inmates running the asylum.
Toasty - And Kennedy was assassinated by a Communist in Texas.
So I agree we have a liberal problem in my state.
Nothing a little logic and personal responsibility can't cure.
Yes amber I heard that, too. But you forgot to tell everyone they scored 7 points higher than monkeys.
Just a proud american?---sorta like you
Interesting that the conservatives are talking about personal responsibility at the same time they refuse to address their key role in this massacre...
Thank you Angelica.
Why is Just A Proud American's post collapsed? What did he say that deserved it?
it seems like people who aren't progressive are always on the defensive, that must be very fatiguing
What a dumba$$ article. The only division I've heard is from dumba$$ dipstick Dupnik.....
I've lived here all my life. It is becoming a cesspit of liberalism and entitlement mentality. Thanks for moving here and ruining it.
Ah, those openminded liberals are collapsing comments again.
Diversity of thought is a little too much for you, eh?
Maybe just getting a bit of the sting of the truth?
To JerseyGirl:
Versus having your child kidnapped or raped by a citizen... I suppose it feels less horrible.
Jersey Girl - Like everything else, they count on us being the ants and them being the grasshoppers.
They do what they like, and if it gets them in trouble, good thing hard working conservatives are there to bail them out.
Our Gov't has become the way saving, being careful, and productive is redistributed to those that are not.
I've never collapsed one statement on here. Even when they are really offensive. Everyone has their opinion.
Jersy girl
I guess until you have had a child kidnapped or raped by an white gun toting AZ native, you couldn't begin to understand.
Given the recent events in your state, it seems pretty clear that "illegals" are FAR from your biggest problem!!!!!!
These are "Great Americans"?
Dang I wanted to post what I really thought but. Its to late. Hate is winning folks.
Cheers
Know why? Cuz your friends and maybe you were driving it. ; ]
Cheers mate
Devicive?Who in the bloody hell here has had congress give the presidente of Mexico a standing ovation for a speech attacking that sates soverign right to govern itself?I dont care who you are,or where you live, thems fightin words there.Dont expect many friendly overtures from the people of this state when you go against the grain of common sense and decency because the media told you to.
Wanting illegals gone is not racist. It is proper.
Cheers.
Ryan in Texas-
You claim 2/3 of Federal spending is for entitlements. You must be counting the Defense budget as an entitlement otherwise you are a liar.
TIred of silly does that include the white ones just asking?
How else is America going to compete if the right wont even invest in education? ; ]
Cheers
Then right again. ;]
Cheers.
Every state and city has its psychos. We just found ours and his parents are probably CA or IL imports. What a stupid article.
Is Arizona the epicenter of divisiveness?? Not as long as D.C. and network news exist!!!
What part of "illegal immigrant" doesn't America understand?
When the law of the land no longer applies, then, social unrest will rise!
mowdy you are a hateful troll and a wanker. Be receptive to all ideas or you really do have a left side.
That sums it up quite nicely.
If you look at the following interactive map, you'll find that the growth of the tea party, while being relatively high on the east coast, it is shockingly apparent that in the areas of least population density have grown in tea party activity at a rate that matches or exceeds the areas that have the most dense population.
http://labs.slate.com/articles/growth-of-tea-party/
Well put. I agree with your assessment.
Cheers.
Cheers.
4.41 - Excellent comment - and thank you for your service to our country.
Interesting that when an issue of this magnitude arises, we hear nothing from the righties!
jersey-I would not be so quick to condemn another state for financial woes. Arizona is BROKE.
Now we are supposed to play nice?
jersey is just a daily loudmouth know it all. She should run for office. Or, ?
AP#### A leader is not necessarily one that I agree with, it is one that I can respect and follow.
Your sarcasm does not lend itself to the debate. Hush!
He was sitting next to his wife Cindy who was sitting right behind former Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O'Connor.
Jersey girl: you are mistaken. It was the other way around. John McCain turned away from the President. I saw it myself. He walked away as the President approached him. It is not apparent why this happened. That is part of the problem here. Everyone needs to be truthful and stop demonizing the other side.
Diane R. If you are not happy in Florida I suggest you take your yankee butt back to New York.
Does anyone remember the Kennedy assassination?
Oswald was a Communist. He tried to kill an ANTI COMMUNIST US GENERAL before Kennedy.
So did the media blame the liberals? You don't get more liberal than a communist.
Oh, wait, the liberal media blaming their own? What was I thinking?
You are an idiot plain and simple, just like your mind!
Sheeesh....
Oh, look: Dorfy watched that rediculous pile of junk-JFK.
Dave, it's easy to control the hate on cable and radio. Don't listen.
Matthews doesn't have to stop they only get to tell others to stop. And it's only hypocrisy if it's the other side talking about him.
Palin is lying she is always trying to play the victim. If she were caught standing over an old lady after shooting her 10 times she would say she made me do it. The woman has no intelligence or shame. Please elect her your 2012 presidential rep., please!
there was no target put on palin. palin put the target on others. you are wrong.
If you really want to get somewhere talking to "the other side" on places like this I'd leave those a$$holes out of it ya know
"
"Is Arizona the epicenter of divisiveness?"
He took an oath of office to uphold the laws of the State of Arizona. He can't pick and choose which ones he will and won't uphold.
perhaps, if Arizona residents stopped illegally hiring the illegals to do their house cleaning and gardening, the problem would also stop... As long as you keep offering them a job, they will keep coming over the boarder...
Had to repost, as "the community" <read: Democrats> are collapsing certain threads.
Ok, after reading these, I'm all for putting 4 walls around Arizona and sending in half a million psychiatrists.
Cavalier,,,69 don't be surprised if some psych ward official comes a knocking on your door... I LOVE Arizona, and the residence who live there.
And, Rascal55,,, I pray your southern border will be secure soon. Your the front line to our freedoms ...it's a shame so many in DC do not care.
actually wiseguy, we Americans stole it back from the
Spainiards, who stole it from the Incas and Aztecs....So no, you are not even close to right.
As far as I can tell,
You would NOT have an Illegal Problem if someone was NOT Hiring them...
Every time I go to a Hotel in Arizona... I see Mexicans... When I go to a Restaurant, Car Washes, Liquior Stores....
So, If Arizona is under siege, then its because YOU are Hiring them...
If you did NOT Hire them... They would NOT stay there...
Ron-
Yes, we do have a lot of legal hispanics here in AZ.
End welfare and wealth redistribution programs and immigration is no longer a problem.
B.D. Matinez.... YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON !!
"Is Arizona the epicenter of divisiveness"?
No, it's the only state that tries to take a stand on issues that not popular with the minority special interest groups? Because they're not in lock-step with the rest of the union, it's called divisive. I wish more states were divisive....we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.
Try using 'intolerant' - it's shorter and more to the point.
Yep racism is alive and well in Arizona.
I live in Tucson and am afraid to even go grocery shopping because if all the right wing nut carrying guns.
Doesn't matter how the republicans respond or if . the comments are takin out of text and used against them.... and its not about them...
Jerseygirl,
Illegals are not responsible for all kiddnapping and murders, or child molestations for that matter.
Jersey Girl go back to Jersey, not sure why w o p s are so concern about illegals, Jersey has more dopes than any other New England state...
Jersey...
Ron-
I believe Jersey did say,"If the Federal Government has done its job..." We know they have never been closed.
Mark,
I see your point as well, i really do.
We all need to work TOGETHER to fix the system and solve problems, not blame each other and cause more strife.
neenee77
"However, illegals do not get gov benefits. They can't without green card or other type of doc".
Not true. If that were the case then please explain why illegals are at every supermarket with WIC cards in hand. Also an illegal can not get SNAP however if they have a kid here, the kid is eligible for all the entitlements hence the illegal is allowed to file and draw those entitlements to "provide for their legal citizen" baby.
michael,
You got me there. your right. however, not every latin american that doesn't speak english is illegal either. i have been in the line (food stamps) and watched a lady not only get to the front but got a card immedialtely when i had to prove everything and wait.
Like you. And the nucases on the extreme left.
faux noise is leftist, eh? They are lying fools.
No, Texas has to be the leader on divisiveness...
How Come Sheriff Dupnik's county has a higher crime rate especially murder and assault than Sheriff Aprio's county? Arizona has had a large drug cartel problem that has spilled over into that state and in 2009 Pheonix was the kidnip capital of the US.
Because he is a puss...talks too much like many liberal politicians
I see another brainwashed Fox viewer strikes again. They just don't get it or see it.Their hate lives on.
Strange...I have only hear hate on MSNBC and CNN.
Hey Daine R I just caught you whineing.
Now that is real hate.
sure Diane, while you're blaming Fox and conservatives, here's a lovely montage of tweets from liberals calling for Palin's death.
This is so sad, it is hard to believe that Diane has the ability to use the computer. She should be thankful for FOX news, the only network to report the facts and get it right.
They are not Number ONE because no one is watching them.
Diane: The funny thing about those who constantly accuse others of hate is that usually they are the real haters.
Diane
The rightwing trollpack has lots of time to focus their hate.
We don't. Nice comment among a group of ignorants. Keep up the good fight!
ASSPADDY,
Why does the "rightwing trollpack" have lots of time to focus their hate?
Arizonan / Stacy
Wow, pretty one sided far left wing article lambasting Az.
I think it's a disgusting article...
Relax. The article tells the truth.
I'm a conservative republican but that doesn't mean I'm a racist like this article would like you to think.
soazDan: So are you saying that 25 year resident Anne in TX is lying?
Cavalier a lot can change in eight years; look how much has changed in the last two; Jack mack is predicting another civil war, and America is mad! I suspect he's right!
just so arizona doesn't start funding transplants again. that is soooo socialist.
Arizona may not always make legislative decision that the country agrees with, but at least they try to do something.
it's so funny how the minute someone like this author even questions whether Arizona has become the epicenter of divisiveness, the right-wingers start screaming about what idiots we all are for taking pause at how out of control the state seems to be getting. or it's the federal government's fault. it's always someone else's fault with these people. they talk a lot about personal responsibility, but have a real hard time looking themselves in the mirror and wondering if they might be part of the problem.
zacatx, Can you explain "how out of control the state seems to be getting"?
I agree with EAE---
Arizona's decision to enforce the law as to ILLEGAL immigration is absolutely appropriate.
This is a prime example of why the print media is going away. This has to be one of the worst articles I have seen all week. It is just stupid.
Why?? because you don't agree with it this time?
Soon, they'll all have a few drinks, make some slurs, and be back to their "normal" fun-loving selves.
um...you just read a print article. "going away"?
UncleKrunk, because most Americans disagree. People are sick and tired of this crap. The article itself is not not news, it is an opinion and the side the author is on. The media has gotten away from reporting the news. It now creates it and sensationalizes it.
mark
so much for free speech eh?
Harley, I agree and that's why I voted for Jan Brewer last November. At least she is making a stand!
Yeah, she created the first real death panel in the US. Congratulations.
Diane, trying to get any point across to these lunkheads is like teaching a dog not to eat its own sh1t.
What exactly is your point UncleKrunk? You have tried teaching your dog to eat its own "". SPCA is knoking on your door.
You're from Canada?? I thought you guys were "readers?" .....socialist.
Oh boy, could we sink any lower? are manners and civil discourse truly a thing of the past? By the way UncleKrunk, Canada is doing quite well, much better than we are doing. They are financially strong and have a relatively low crime rate.
Good because when the Tea baggers take over and force Americans to worship Jesus and post flags in their front yard, we're going to be the "illegals."
Jackie...could that be because all the illegals are here?
The Associated Press and MSNBC are the epicenter of bigotry. Isn't it obviously a projection on their part?
Arizona is a great state (and I live in Nevada). the AP and MSNBC...not so great.
yea, the'r the nut cases and bigots, and you're a rational, sensible, thinker.
You're right David. What a bunch of liberal crap!
fox facts?
No, you need to watch the Clinton News Network to get the so called "facts", or better yet, MSNBC to get brainwashed!
How is it that MSNBC can publish this stuff still. How can they so blatantly take advantage of the events in Arizona to preach their anti-right rhetoric? We now know that the guy had no interest in right-wing ideas. If anything, a friend of the shooter is now suggesting that it was his interest in the "Zeitgeist" movement that was most troubling... sounds more extreme left than extreme right.
republican propaganda, backed by no facts, only opinions, you know what they say about opinions...
Texas is where the divisiveness is designed and developed (Dickless Army ,etc)
Arizona is the testing ground.
So it appears that you must be from both TX and AZ.
