I don't have any evidence linking the shooter to anything, but don't think it's beyond possible that there is some link - not to conservative politics per se but to invective advertising.

I have no personal problem with conservative politics - as a reasonably affluent white male I benefit mightily from many of its policies. Whether these policies are good for our entire society is another question. I do have a problem with the far right. I don't want our children being taught fairy tales about how the world was created, while children in other countries are garnering PhDs in physics and mathematics. I don't want government officials who are proud of their lack of formal education, and incurious about the world around them. I don't want religion in government. I am extremely conservative fiscally, and laugh at the idea that the party of Ronald Reagan (national debt quadrupled from $ 1 trillion to $ 4 trillion during his tenure) and George Bush ( $6 trillion to $10.5 trillion) - look it up at the OMB website before you dispute the numbers - now poses as the deficit police.

As far as we are concerned you should be able to do what you want when you want how you want as long is it doesn't hurt anyone else physically, economically, or socially. I really think that you need to perhaps stop just making nonsensical comments because they aren't getting you what it is that you want at the moment. Yes, there are conservatives (not all, but quite a few) who want the US to be the Christian counterpart to the "Islamo-fascist" nations of the Middle East.

And, yes, this particular person appears to be animated by the ramblings of people like Beck--who are not really Republican and aren't what one could clearly label "conservative." The Tea Party movement is partially libertarian, partially conservative, and partially anarchist--the philosophy of its less-educated participants is not coherant (which is why they don't know that socialism and fascism are pretty much opposites on the political scale while democracy and socialism are actually quite close--and they don't know the difference between socialism and communism either).

Still, the Tea Party also has better educated members, many of who are small business owners who have some fairly articulate and quite relevant things to say. The problem is that they have chosen to use gain power by using below-the-belt tactics to rile up those who aren't well educated, aren't well balanced, and really do frighten both Republicans and Democrats and Independents.

Heres the thing that gets me... This fellow was clearly ill. His writing shows a disjointed kind of thought process that shows serious psychosis. I can't believe for a moment he went through life without anyone seeing that he was seriously ill. Someone somewhere must have known something wasn't quite right with Jared. Believe it or not, someone can be totally irrational, writing thousand-page "manifestos" that make no sense whatsoever, but they cannot be forced to get treatment. Even if teachers, friends and family members knew he was ill, they could not force him into treatment. Until someone threatens or commits bodily harm or property damage, they cannot be involuntarily committed to a hospital or mental health facility. Please read the book "Crazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness" by Pete Earley. It's heart-breaking but explains a great deal about our broken mental healthcare system.

How about these significant points of interest concerning abortion clinics:

1. Since 1977 in the United States and Canada, property crimes committed against abortion providers have included 41 bombings, 173 arsons, 91 attempted bombings or arsons, 619 bomb threats, 1630 incidents of trespassing, 1264 incidents of vandalism,

2. There have been 17 attempted murders, 383 death threats, 153 incidents of assault or battery, and 3 kidnappings committed against abortion providers.

3. Violence directed toward abortion providers has killed at least eight

Therefore, in my comments, I did say that family and friends should "watch" this person, and or report them to the right Authorities. "A Warning". Good point on this one! Interesting how political figures are said to be to blame, but none of the people who dealt with him (teachers, administrators, friends, family members) play no part. Marchant...My fear is that as technology becomes ever more sophisticated, will weapons also? Guns kills faster than any other weapon. This guy could not have killed as many people with any other weapon. He'd have been easily apprehended. The reality is that guns can kill in public. This was a very sad act by a mentally imbalanced young man. He was able to buy a gun because he did not have a feloney or mental health record.

PPC was able to expel him until he got mental help, but they could only keep him out until he got help, not force him to or put anything in a public record that would come up when a security check was run for his gun purchase. He did have a drug arrest, which should have prevented the gun purchase, but entered some kind of program instead, leaving that record clean when they did a background check. His parents, since he still lived with them, should have acted to get him help on the mental illness, but right now we don't know if they tried.

When President Reagan was shot, by another nut case, not political, he asked the doctor in the emergency room if he was Republican and the doctor answer "Mr. President, today we are all Republicans." Point is, a tragedy has happened, it isn't a Democrat, Republican, liberal or conservative tragedy, it is an American one.

Let's drop all the blaming and pull together as civilized Americans. We can disagree, but let's do it in a respectful civilized way. And let's keep our thoughts and prayers focused on the victims and their families, not fighting each other.

We need to realize that people often hold the same values as BOTH parties.

In fact now most people are independents (40+%) because neither party reflects the views of the majority. Most democrats don't like the whole health care bill, most republicans hate the bank bailouts and the patriot act.

Just because most of us on here tow the party lines doesn't mean that most common people buy into it.

We need to find tru compromise by determining what we as a whole society will tolerate. Most people 85% agree we should be able to own firearms, most people agree we should be able to have abortions in at least some situations. Just because you may bite the whole hook, line and sinker doesn't mean your thoughts are parrallel with the majority. The majority want a resposible government with clear laws and clear rights. Limitied, at least to a common set of rules, what those rules should be is somewhere in the middle but absolute.

Actually she was quite conservative for a democrat. She was a republican a few years ago, until she changed her party affiliation. I wish we had more reps like her in Oregon. She sounds like a very fair-minded and intelligent woman.

The judge was also not a typical conservative Republican. He recently allowed a suit to go forward which involved illegal immigrants suing a rancher. I don't know the details of the case, but just the fact that he found in favor of the immigrants was enough to earn him some serious hate from the right.

The shooter is quite likely insane. As such, it's unlikely that his views strictly adhere to any textbook definition of "tea-party" conservative. For that matter, it's unlikely that his views are actually coherent at any level.

However, it's likely that he was quite tuned in to the rhetoric of Arizona politics this last fall, as he chose to shoot his congresswoman (rather than shooting his bus driver or a rap singer). One group in Arizona was fixated on guns, used violent rhetoric, and liked to talk about revolutions, "taking people out", "knocking the hell" out of people, etc. You may see it as poetic license, but insane people don't make those fine distinctions.

Was he a tea-partier? Who cares. Might it be time for the tea-partiers to stop talking about "second amendment remedies", "don't retreat, reload", and pasting that "the tree of liberty is watered.." quote everywhere? If they don't want to see more crazy people coming out of their basements and shooting "dem-rats", it might be a good idea.

Unfortunately he is well on the way to a convincing plea of insanity, so the death penalty would be out of the question. Alcohol poising causes serious brain damage, and frequently death. The fact that he survived the alcohol overdose makes it pretty clear he is mentally damaged.

He won't get an insanity bail out...to much documentation beforehand for that to work out for him.

Its a real shame to because no one recognized his disorder and tried to get him help before something like this tragic event happened. Most mentally ill aren't violent but their are exceptions and this guy is definitely one of them.

Absolutely Jeff! It just depends on how long it's allowed to "brew" before they get help. If it wasn't this he would have found something else to obsess on.
