What exactly does a person's political preference have to do when people are killed in acts of senseless violence?

If I had to bet my home on this I would say drug cartel. No matter who did the shooting - their tactics are brutal and evil and they have billions of dollars of business to protect.

The alleged shooter's name has been released. This guy is neither democrat or republican. He is totally anti government - Rep. Gifford was the unfortunate, available, easy target.

Tea party is anti over tax and over spend. Giffords happens to side with republicans that government should tighten it's belt.

Well, if it was a tea partier he sure hurt the republicans more than democrats, since the congresswoman is living and the republican appointed judge is dead. If its not a tea partier than I would wonder why this whole dang article is talking about the injured congresswoman and not the dead judge, and essentially implying it was politically motivated.

I saw this guys Facebook page moments before it was taken down. One of his Groups was the Tea Party Patriots. There is still a YouTube video were he mentions his mini bible and is certainly anti-government.

This is not a cartel shooting, nor can we say its a tea party anything. Fact is that this is just a disgusting event. Is this the direction our society has chosen to go? Is the only answer we can come up with always driven by violence? This shooter is a whack job and I don't think he gives a rats a$$ about political parties. He was a war vet gone bad. Maybe PTSD, hell who knows at this point. Fact is, you absolutely cannot have this kind of barbarism going on in the political world or in any aspect of society. I've watched this society over the years grow more intolerant, angry and violent. Whether its politics or world affairs, I gave hope that we would find a way to settle differences peacefully. I guess we're either not smart enough to do that or society as whole just doesn't care about the direction we're going. In either case this is a sad thing and one that will catch up with us sooner or later. God bless those impacted in this act of senseless violence and may Congresswoman Giffords recover quickly.

Well I can and will blame the Tea Party. I will not blame all conservatives. My mother-in-law is a slightly crazed, overly religious conservative but she wouldn't hurt a fly. AmericanHistorian - I agree with you that this guy doesn't represent any LEGITIMATE political party/perspective. However, his views do echo those of Sarah Palin and her ilk.

Every society has a few unstable individuals and while it doesnt matter which party he is from, its the hatred that political parties use to gain votes that pushes such individuals over the edge.

Other lost souls are the other five people that were senselessly killed by this act of domestic terrorism.

A 22-year-old woman in Arizona, Caitie Parker, claimed on her Twitter feed that she went to high school and college with the gunman, and was in a band with him. She described his politics in the past as "left wing, quite liberal, & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy." She also described him as having a lot of friends "until he got alcohol poisoning in '06" and dropped out of school. "Mainly loner very philosophical."

So where is the truth? Some say he was a lefty. Some say a righty. It appears more like he was a lunatic motivated by his own dreams and halucinations if you people would stop the anger and finger pointing long enough to read his writings for yourselves instead of following what others on your political side are saying without even verifying for yourselves. The Sheriff however was quite clear that he blames the anti-government an bigotted, vitriolic rhetoric for encouraging someone like this to act. He repeated this theme several times and said the region had become a Mecca for this type of talk. He spoke about radio and TV spreading this rhetoric as well as politicians and how dangerous it was. I watched the entire press conference and was amazed at how this Sheriff spoke so strongly to that effect. He would not speak to motive directly yet he managed to be quite clear of his opinion. We don't know what indicators he has or if the shooter has said anything. It was one of the most amazing press conferences I have seen where a officer has been so direct. As tragic as the incident is, the Sheriff's open denunciation of this rhetoric was refreshing. If you saw this, it seemed obvious that the Sheriff was 100% convinced and I believe he has adequate evidence to draw that conclusion, even though he could not share it.

The issue is that many such mentally troubled individuals are walking around amongst us. Sane people may hear the rhetoric, which has risen so much in recent times, and view it as just strong language using symbolic analogies. But insane people may have a problem separating symbolism from literal speech.

I don't care if this guy considered himself as a Tea Party person or not. No one can deny that it has been alongside the rise of the Tea Party that the rise of this rhetoric has taken place. The overwhelming majority use of this rhetoric and symbolism has in fact been by Tea Party and far right candidates and spokespeople. We have free speech, but some speech is very dangerous and inciteful. People can say what they want but should take some responsibility for what they say. It is way past time for those who have used this rhetoric to take some responsibility, refrain from using it and denounce it in general as well as their own prior use of it.

Violence is not the answer; nor the solution to our political problems. It is even worse when Palin (who calls herself a politician) encourages cross-hairs over other politicians pictures, who do not follow her line of thinking. That action alone is an excellent reason why this woman should never even be considered for President or any other office. Personally, I find it difficult to believe that the authorities never arrested Palin for that behavior. It was an open and verbal assault on other politicians, and as far as I'm concerned, it encourages others to take violent action. Both sides of the isle have the responsibility to vote or speak what they believe represents their constituents. And no one ever has the right to physically harm or even verbally threaten harm to individuals expressing their opinion, which might be different. Freedom of speech is not a right to include violence. There are better ways to express your concerns, but losing control of ones emotions with violent anger is not a right, or the way. Try hiring a speaker to bring your concerns to the attention of the officials in D.C. One of his friends described his politics in the past as "left wing, quite liberal, & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy." So Obama should obviously send the FBI after anyone obsessed with 2012 prophecy immediately.

The dead and wounded deserve better than to be used for political mudslinging. What the hell does the shooter's politics matter? He just murdered 6 people including a 9 year old kid. This was an act of insanity; to kill for any reason is insane. It was not a political statement, it was not terrorism, it was simply insane. Yeah, that's the main POINT. We aren't going to be safer if everyone walks around armed. News reports say that a person in the crowd fired BACK at the "shooter". Yet the shooter was taken into custody without a wound. The "legal" shooter fired, but missed the target. Even more bullets involved. Yeah, that helped a BUNCH.

I didn't start out as a person who supports gun control. But every time something like this happens, I become that much more convinced that a total gun ban is the only reasonable way forward from here. Personally, I don't care what the constitution says about that. Guns DO kill people and it happens every day. Some people would still get murdered after guns were banned, but not nearly as many as now.

The people on the political right always talk about personal responsbility. It's about time they demonstrated what that means, and draw that line in the next election. And everybody else should follow suit.

I first looked at this post yesterday, and after reading all the, mostly liberal hate speech, I left. It was obvious that those on the vine only looked to blame, not investigate the truth. I came back to read the updated article this morning and was incredibly disappointed by the sheriff's following comment:

While the first sentence "may" be true, the rest of it is a bunch of crap. This kind of short-sighted commentary blurs the truth and gives the lazy something to use on their lazy bandwagon. Not a good showing for the sheriff of a county. I doubt seriously that AZ has become a mecca for prejudice and bigotry, actually, they've become a mecca for lawlessness and their citizens have to live in fear due to the inaction of our govt. to enforce the laws on the books. I feel for AZ.

Best wishes for recovery to those injured and condolences to the families of those slain.

My Prayers are for the people hurt and the souls of those killed. What are we teaching our children. To hate and take extreme positions, to play voilent video games, but never can we teach children morals, right from wrong or to pray.

Perhaps letting everyone vote for any candidate in the primary will move politicians to the middle away and from the extremes.

Virtually ever county in the United States has mental health care available on a sliding scale. It is very often free, and if the person applies for disability based on his mental illness he will get Medicaid as well. This has NOTHING to do with a lack of available health care and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that the mentally ill have civil rights and can refuse care. All of the existing meds have side effects, furthermore they often stop working if even the patient takes them regularly. How would Obamacare address this problem? In my state, my FOURTEEN YEAR OLD has the right to refuse psychiatric care and the only way I could override this would be going to court, where he has the exact same rights as an adult. I am NOT kidding. It was liberal judges who awarded the insane these rights. You generally have to be a danger to yourself of others in order to be committed against your will, and this is NOT an easy standard to meet. Most psychotics have the sense NOT to admit certain things to their doctors. (At every doctor's visit, my son is asked if he is hearing voices or seeing things; he always says no, yet it is very obvious he is.)

Survived for now. I have seen people shot through the head a number of times (one each - not each shot a number of times). Some lived for a day or two then the swelling that occurs with this type of injury causes so much intracranial pressure that the person dies. The next 3 days are critical.

I can see where you're coming from with your viewpoint but I believe there is one "glowing" difference in all this which keeps becoming more apparent as time goes on-IMHO-and I'll just use the examples you've given as the basis.

Someone writing in an article-or saying on television-and making a comment like "Obama" should "go gangsta" or on the GOP or "Obama" needs to break the kneecaps of the Republicans-while "tacky" metaphors-doesn't strike the same nerve in society as "well known" political and media figures who "clearly" know they are positions of extreme "influence" going around "specifically" addressing "the public" that they may want to consider "2nd Amendment remedies" to suit "their" needs or circulating pictures to "the public" depicting those the "oppose" in sniper cross-hairs like they're actually suggesting they go "hunting" for humans.

So if Palin and the like were making comments like "Boehner needs to go gangsta on the Democratic Congress" or McCain or McConnell should-and yes I "know" how surreal that statement sounds-as far as I'm concerned that, while still "cheesy" metaphorically, is still within "limits" if not "comical" but what's happening instead is we have a group of extremely "influential" individuals going around and suggesting to "the public" that perhaps "they" should "go gangsta" on politicians and individuals of differing views as a "political tactic" in what can only be described as an already volatile situation...

Now add to the "latter" of these two scenario's the disturbing realization this same group of extremely "influential" individuals have also been feeding an unstable portion "the public" a steady diet of misinformation, conspiracy, thinly veiled bigotry, and fear-mongering tactics (with any number of examples out there for reference) "on purpose" while at the same time convincing them that they are in fact, the "only" ones who are being "honest" with them and giving them the "real" story and aren't actually "twisting" things around purely to suit an agenda.

So toss that one in there and these two "camps" start pulling away from each other pretty rapidly as one scenario suddenly takes on a much more ominous and quite frankly "calculated" sinister tone..And I find it "extremely" difficult to buy for a single second that somehow "all" these supposedly "intelligent" individuals "guilty" of going around engaging in such "recklessly" corrosive as well as "un-Patriotic" behavior were "ignorant" of the possible "disastrous" consequences of such deliberate tactics...So while both camps may have issues it's pretty apparent that only "one" camp has consciously embraced "dumpster diving" as their "standard" tactic.

Before Reagan he would have been in a mental health facility, and not shooting people. Currently the mentally ill can't get health care. I know someone who is seriously mentally ill who is working as a nurse. They cut her benefits and made her repay them back (before Obama). Now this seriously mentally ill person (who I would rather support quite frankly) works in a major hospital to support herself. Scary. I would feel safer if we as taxpayers all chipped in a $5/yr to pay for the mentally unstable to get some nice drugs behind a nice padded facility and to regular mental health screenings.

We've lived with a government of hate and fear throughout the Bush years, remember? We've lost our Bill of Rights. The Republicans have done the fear thing before. We should be wiser this time around.

What's left? A pint of blood from everybody once a month? Our personal IDs?

Onepoker, fascism is simply the far right end of the political spectrum, just as communism is the far left. Beck is the one who wants to paint falsely like an idiot. Perhaps you should use more consideration when deciding who to listen to?

Reignfyre...In Europe, its the left wingers that are causing the violence (you know, the riots, burning of houses, etc) because the austerity measures being taken by the governments are shutting off the entitlements.

People like Pater seem to be trying to fan the flame. This Jared kid was certifiable. If you watched his videos you realized he hated everyone. He hated right wing politics too. Did you not seeing him talking about hating religion and hating that "terrorism" was used for political gain? He was just plain weird. Time to unite, not divide. We as a people, are better than this.

Lets get the Nazi thing straight. It was an extreme right wing nationalistic political party. When Hitler first came to power in Germany he didn't have a majority to form a government so he had to go to a "natural" ally, the Conservative Party, also a right wing party, but not nearly as radical as the Nazis. Hitler used the term "socialism" in his party's name because socialism was an extremely popular concept in Europe at the time, although all those who understood the term knew the Nazis were in no way "socialists."

Glenn Beck, who has recommended Nazi-sympathizer books in the past (when he found out later that the writers were Nazi supporters - he dropped the endorsements), leans very closely toward Nazism in his thinking. However, in his defense, the fact that he accuses liberals and progressives as "Nazis" is only a reflection on his stupidity, not on any clever twisting of facts by him to demonize those who don't agree with him.
