I am wary of such news coverage. There simply exists too much evidence about the existence of the WMD in Iraq, you failed to mention (oversight perhaps??)) that a fair amount of WMD were actually located and destroyed US forces during the invasion and in the months after the occuation. "WMD" stands for "Weapons of Mass Destruction". Pretty much anything beyond a 155 mm artillery shell falls into this class. He had spent several decades building a power base, and was the Right-Hand Man of the then President in Iraq. The President was elderly and ill, so for several years, Saddam was the face of Iraqi politics, and many considered him the de-facto leader in Iraq. His then President announced an agreement in 1979 that would have merged Iraq and Syria into one country, and the Leader in Syria would have become the second in command in Iraq, (to take over when the President died,) effectively stripping Saddam of his power.

At this point Saddam staged a quiet Coup, and announced himself as President. As most of Iraq already considered him the real leader behind the President, it was quite easy to do.

Saddam Hussein has long held a deep seated hatred and distrust for Syria,as a result of his almost losing power to them. Implying that he would turn over his WMD's to Syria is tantamount to saying that the US could have turned over our nuclear stockpile to the USSR at the height of the Cold War. Yea right.

As far as pulling out and cutting off all aid to these people who don't want us in their country, sounds good to me. They have been screaming for decades they don't want us in their country. Fine, lets pack up and leave. and when a flood hits, or a drought creates famine, and they come to us for help, our response can be,"You wanted us out, so we are staying out. Best of luck to you."

But the only way this can ever be feasible, is for us to find a source of energy OTHER than oil. And I am afraid that the major oil corporations, and the politicians they buy, are not going to allow that to happen until every last drop of oil has been sucked from the planet.

We need to devise a viable alernative to fossil fuel, then distribute it around the world, so when their oil becomes worthless, the entire Middle East can revert back to throwing rocks a one another.

We actually have plenty of oil available here in the continental US and Alaska to last for a century or so easily. By blocking imports we would then for manufacturing jobs back to the US and incomes would rise. The cost ot manufacture here is not that far out of line with the cost to make things in China or India and ship them here. Because of the volumn of goods we buy it becomes more practical to move the work offshore. If it were so much cheaper to make things over there then we should have seen prices drop dramatically. Higher profits were the main drive in leaving not profitability itself. If the companies that moved over there were not profitable they wouold not have had the money to invest billions in India, China,Viet Nam and so forth. Beancounters showed on paper higher profits by moving and CEO's saw bigger bonuses.

If this hypothetical change were to take place China would also be forced to bring the value of their money to a more realistic figure. They continue to keep it devalued to steal our jobs and other countries jobs with lower labor costs that are artificially deflated. They are not playing fair and need to be put in their place now before they gain too much of the worlds resources. It is time we forced our elected officials to take actions to protect us as a country and not do the "right" thing so to speak. I say if your gonna import a product that was once produced here you had better be doing it by the same standards we have to abide by.

Of course this will never happen. We will never close our borders or ports. It is time for a new America though. One that demands "fair trade" practices from countries we do business with or exclude them.

Our manufacuring costs here are massively higher than in other countries. When I was in Afghan, we were hiring local workers to do rebuilding and interpretation. One interpreter I worked with told me the US was paying him almost $500 a month, and he didn't know what to do with all of his money. He was filthy rich by his neighbors' standards. How can we compete with a worker willing to accept that kind of wage?

The community I live in has seen many textile manufacturing jobs move overseas. The company goes from paying $15-$25 an hour per employee, to $1 or even less per hour. But as they know that the US Market is accustomed to paying a certain price for their product, this reduced production cost does not reflect in retail prices. The end result is a massive gain in net profits. That is why they move overseas. The cost of shipping and import taxes make only a small dent in the savings. If it were not profitable, they would not move.

If we were to impede imports, some of these companies will come back to the US, I agree. That will increase jobs in the US. However, now that they are accustomed to those higher profit margins, they will simply increase retail cost so they can maintain their level of greed. The beancounters will show the CEO how to maintain those bigger bonuses. So we will have new jobs, but will not be able to afford the products we normally consume, when consumption falls, production falls, and we lose jobs all over again. Or worse, many companies may just stay with foreign markets. China and India are quickly becoming consumer economies, like us, but have massively larger populations, resulting in every attractive markets to some companies. Then we don't get the new jobs, and prices again will go up, because of the reduction in supply.

Even companies that now operate inside the US are forced to keep retail costs lower than they would like, to compete with foreign competitors. Remove that competition, and prices will soar.

You actually touched on a better solution. Fair Trade Practices. NAFTA MUST be abolished. The import taxes we charge should be in line with the export taxes we are charged.

I worked union (Grain Millers/Teamsters) for 20 years. The vast majority of employees were hard working deserving people who would otherwise suffer the abuses of a competitive employer. When businesses say "We have to compete." you can bet the comptetition is against labor. With the labor markets what they are I guess you can say that business competed successfully, with millions of unemployed.
