If the leaks reveal illegal activity, then what? There's a lot of people here assuming that the leaks are going to put people in harm's way, but, conversely, if the leaks embarrass a government and cause it to change its activities such that fewer people are put in harm's way, does the leaker then deserve gratitude and respect?

I remember not that long ago about a bank security guard in Switzerland who caught the bank he worked for destroying documents that proved it held money that rightfully belonged to relatives of people killed in the holocaust. The world praised him for his honesty, but he lost his job and was hounded out of Switzerland. He broke his terms of employment, even though the general consensus was that he did the right thing by revealing the illegal activity.

Granted, these leaks are on a vastly different scale, and involve far more important information, but is the principle not the same? Does a person have a moral obligation to reveal illegal activity if they are aware of it? Does not doing so make them an accessory to the activity?

bill s, I often refrain from commenting on Vietnam since I am too young to have served back then, but I am sick as Hell of Vietnam Vets who question my service or the service of my fellow Soldiers and Marines and I dare one to ever do it in person !!! 2BCT 1AD OIF 05-06 OIF 08-09. I disagreed with the decision to overthrow Saddam because I feared it would remove the focus from Afghanistan, a fear that has been realized. Nobody is questioning your valor, just the mission. We were told if we lost in Vietnam that the vietcong would be in La throwing hand grenades. Didn't happen. The Russions were told that if they did not win in Afghanistan , they would have terrorists in Moscow, didn't happen. We are told if we do not win in Afghanistan the Taliban will swim their donkeys across the ocean...... and you believe it?

The real war we need be concerned with is our economic war with China. They are kicking our ass, and the reason is our excess military spending. Our military spends enough more than China, each year, to build 7000 $100,000,000 factories. That is 70,000 $100,000,000 factories over the last 10 years. We now blame China for our economic problems, when in fact our excess military spending has destroyed our economy. The economic results are no different than if we had bombed 70,000 $100,000,000 factories in the US.

10-20 years from now, you too will realise it had nothing to do with the safety of the US. Hopefully, you will have the gonads to speak out. As a combat veteran you will not be called chicken sh*t for speaking out, and realise that by speaking out, you are saving the lives of other young men.

If wikileaks is just leaking the truth then what is the problem? Seriously, are we all afraid of the truth? Why would telling the truth be so terrible, shouldn't it be considered good and doing the right thing. If the truth is not incriminating then why should it be feared? We hear things on the news, would not the truth reinforce that, if not then the truth is preferred. Why are we all so afraid of the truth? Why should the truth be hidden?

I'm normally in favor of releasing information but if the anticipations expressed in the news are correct there will be information released regarding much more than the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Could be some of our previously staunch supporters/allies will be wounded. The results could potentially be both economic and military. There could be consequences for far more than a small number of individuals. Assange obviously feels he is a crusader. He's also twisted.

What do you mean one day!!! There have already been people killed in Afghanistan because of the leaks. Afghan civilians who were cooperating with the US have been killed by terrorist.

I am not one to advocate murder, but someone needs to take out Assange before he gets any more people killed. Assange is releasing these documents for no other reason than self promotion and his own ego. In addition, PFC Bradley Manning should be tried for treason for releasing these documents. After conviction he should be executed. The punishment for treason in time of war is death and I see no reason not to carry out the sentence. Manning released these documents because he was upset over a breakup and pissed at having to be in Afghanistan. There was no altruistic motive behind the release of the documents, just pure spite against the military and self aggrandizement.

All joking aside, the US has real enemies who want to kill us, bankrupt us, and do our children harm.

What wikileaks is doing is not healthy, nor is it an issue of honesty as some want to make it.

We as a nation and those who work with and for us need to be able to do their work without their work / information being made public, it's no more complicated than that.

A more important question -- where is WikiLeaks getting all of this classified material from? There are way to many documents being released to believe that it is only one traitor turning documents over. Maybe WikiLeaks has been able to hack into classified files.

Ron, it was one dumb PFC that had access to the servers that had all this info. The security in Iraq is not as tight as in the States, but then again, NOT having the ability to share info in a war zone is really bad.

BUT what really adds insult to injury, is the lack security of the troops. Allowing troops to bring recordable devices into secure areas because you are trying to keep the moral up...some intel is boring and listining to music is a nice break, but once in a Secure Area, it should NEVER be allowed to be taken out.

Because in our country, we have a constitution. Now, this constitution has a number of amendments that we've added, and the first ten are called the "Bill of Rights." The very first amendment in the Bill of Rights is one that establishes an often-cited "freedom of speech" wherein the government cannot by law suppress the rights of free expression. A real humdinger of an amendment if you ask me.

Wikileaks is going to get wikileaks killed. Somebody needs to put a stop to this. Nothing good comes from these leaks.

I don’t subscribe to the majority of your rant; but, you did ring a bell when you raised the issue of returning to a subscription military. A drafted military would certainly help to balance the inequities of today’s armed forces. It would give the sons and daughters that come from families of means the equal opportunity to slog in the mud with the less fortunate. Further, it might have the effect of decreasing the military budgets; by, eliminating the need for private firms to pick up the slack for the jobs that have been deemed non-military or beneath or outside the capabilities of our "New Professional" Soldier/s.

As to your comments concerning the Private that has been fingered as the “leaker”; my God, would you leave your children with a 13 year old baby sitter, without over sight? Where were those that ranked this private; were they at the PX’s new Star Bucks, having lattes? Why is it that the lowliest seems to bear the burden of those that are supposed to be in command; or, was it a “private contractor” that was minding the store?

Thomas, I wouldn't be surprised if a "private contractor" WAS minding the store. And who is at least one of the two biggest? Halliburton! That's right! Cheny's pocket liner!

I agree with Paul that this is about diplomats and others having private conversations during which they spoke frankly, and which may not have been complimentary of a third part. Paul's analogy to Grandma is superb!

I wouldn't be surprised if it covers much of the Bush years. The problem for Obama would be tremendous! If Bush, Cheney or Rumsveld (sp?) were caught on tape with their pants down (so to speak), the ensuing chaos in the present political climate in this country would put Capitol Hill completely at a standstill! Nothing would get done except by the janitorial staff, the telephone operators, the secretaries, and the canteen. No immigration reform would be addressed, no green jobs -- or ANY jobs for that matter, some people would stop paying their taxes, all ending in anarchy.

While we're faced with a failing economy, nothing is done to stop this outright fraud. All we get are announcements that increase the amount of time and money that we will be required to pay to increase corporate profits in other countries that use our military to secure and open up new markets in those countries.

I applauded the rejection of yet another Free Trade Agreement by South Korea. The fact that Obama is promoting the same policies that have destroyed this country is evidence that he's part of the corporate effort to take over the world.

He had a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. He was an intelligence analyst, not a secretary.

Access to classified information is supposed to be restricted to those with A: the appropriate level of security clearance, and B: the need to know the information in order to perform their duties. Why would an intelligence analyst in Iraq need access to sensitive diplomatic cables regarding government scandals involving our European allies? It looks like the need-to-know requirement has been dropped in the interests of cost savings and convenience, with all Top Secret documents in the same bucket.

It sounds like it might be more interesting than the last leak.I tried to read through it and it was pretty dry and boring.No possible way these reports could have endangered anybody at all in any current operations.

The diplomatic leaks at least have some potential for scandal and entertainment.I think the reason it takes so long for the leaks to be released after they were received is that the wikileaks people go through them to make sure they don't endanger anyones life.

WTF, the CIA and the military both report to the Commander in Chief. The buck stops with him! If there are cover ups within either of those organizations, I fear that the buck WILL stop there and the true culprits will get off scot free. We didn't get the real culprit with the Phame leak so I think they feel they are immune. If it weren't so serious, I'd have to laugh if someone like Rove, Rumsfeld or Rice got caught on tape. The denying would be thrown right out the window, but this nation would be in an awful mess for an awful long time!
